- 0:00Speaker 1: Before the break, we were talking about the downside of
- 0:04Speaker 1: worrying about what it might do to Trump's ego to
- 0:07Speaker 1: know that there is something called a taco trade. Trump
- 0:11Speaker 1: always chickens out. It is the story of his entire
- 0:14Speaker 1: political rise.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I think that the risk that we were talking about
- 0:18Speaker 2: before the break, which is, is there a danger in
- 0:20Speaker 2: trying to go or intentionally or unintentionally goading Trump Trump,
- 0:25Speaker 2: that's a real risk, and we know that because of
- 0:27Speaker 2: his political career. So in twenty eleven, Barack Obama gives
- 0:30Speaker 2: this brilliant roast of Donald Trump at the White House
- 0:33Speaker 2: correspondence dinner after Trump had been going after him with
- 0:36Speaker 2: the Birther movement and so forth, and Barack Obama, in
- 0:39Speaker 2: his cool way, just evuscerates him. And you see Donald
- 0:42Speaker 2: Trump in the moment boiling over, and the reporting on
- 0:45Speaker 2: it is that that was a really pivotal moment that
- 0:48Speaker 2: galvanized him then to run for president. So he detests
- 0:51Speaker 2: He does detest being mocked, though he certainly likes mocking
- 0:54Speaker 2: other people, So that risk is real. I think the
- 0:57Speaker 2: fact that we are even having this conversation points to
- 1:00Speaker 2: the bizarrow world that we're in in Trump too and
- 1:03Speaker 2: in Trump one, but particularly in Trump too, where you know,
- 1:06Speaker 2: we're thinking about you know what if we make fun
- 1:09Speaker 2: of Trump and then he'll respond in this way, and
- 1:11Speaker 2: the chaos that will be unleashed could be really damaging
- 1:15Speaker 2: for America's standing in the world, in America, the American economy.
- 1:18Speaker 2: You know, the fact that we're having that conversation points
- 1:20Speaker 2: to this weird environment in which, you know, some people
- 1:24Speaker 2: seem to be treating Trump like a senile uncle who
- 1:26Speaker 2: needs to be appeased, and it's unders you know, in
- 1:30Speaker 2: the media, that's certainly not our job. Our job is
- 1:33Speaker 2: to tell the truth as we see it. You see
- 1:36Speaker 2: in Congress and the people around Trump, people continuing to
- 1:40Speaker 2: try to placate him, trying to play to his worst instincts,
- 1:44Speaker 2: to all of his instincts in a way that's counterproductive,
- 1:46Speaker 2: I think. And the question is when they will grow
- 1:51Speaker 2: as fine in Congress, when some people might stand up
- 1:53Speaker 2: to him. What would be the set of events that
- 1:56Speaker 2: would trigger Congress behaving like grown ups and not trying
- 2:00Speaker 2: to just pledge filty to this president.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Charlie, do you on your Bingo card even even play
- 2:08Speaker 1: that game anymore? I mean, is there a point where
- 2:10Speaker 1: they respond to their constituents instead of Donald Trump's whims.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Not in the foreseeable future, because I mean, you and
- 2:18Speaker 3: I have been talking about this for ten years right now,
- 2:20Speaker 3: They've how many times have they had opportunities to do that?
- 2:24Speaker 3: The political costs are simply too high for them. And frankly, look,
- 2:29Speaker 3: waiting around for Republicans to show any sort of independence,
- 2:31Speaker 3: I think is a fool's error. Now on the edges,
- 2:35Speaker 3: you know, perhaps they will push back, you know, here
- 2:38Speaker 3: or there, But the whole issue of tariffs has been
- 2:41Speaker 3: so illustrative because it will have such a tremendous impact
- 2:45Speaker 3: on the economy, on their own constituents. They have the
- 2:49Speaker 3: inherent power to block the teriffs. They are the Article
- 2:53Speaker 3: one body in the Constitution, and yet they have surrendered.
- 2:57Speaker 3: They have ceased functioning as a legislative body in many respects.
- 3:01Speaker 3: But you know, going back to your question about the
- 3:03Speaker 3: dangers of humiliating Donald Trump, you know how I feel
- 3:06Speaker 3: about this. I mean, I wish, you know, we could
- 3:08Speaker 3: humiliate him on a daily basis. I wish that we
- 3:10Speaker 3: could mock him. But Charlot's absolutely right. This is this
- 3:13Speaker 3: is the bizarre world that we're living in where everybody
- 3:16Speaker 3: is walking around on eggshells, you know, afraid to anger,
- 3:19Speaker 3: or the senile uncle who has incredibly thin skin. And
- 3:23Speaker 3: the thing about Donald Trump is he is, of course
- 3:26Speaker 3: a complete narcissist, but he is he has a very
- 3:29Speaker 3: very thin skin, and he is he's dangerous because he
- 3:33Speaker 3: has the power and he has no restraint. And I
- 3:37Speaker 3: think that's just something that kind of the reality that
- 3:39Speaker 3: we have to deal with now. There are some people
- 3:42Speaker 3: who say that, you know that that's a council of defeatism,
- 3:45Speaker 3: that you know, resistance is futile, that we can't do
- 3:47Speaker 3: anything about it. But it is the reality that we're
- 3:50Speaker 3: living in right now. And I think that to the
- 3:53Speaker 3: extent that we can point out the absurdity of Donald Trump,
- 3:57Speaker 3: the fact that we can in fact show that the
- 4:00Speaker 3: emperor does have no clothes, and by the way, there's
- 4:02Speaker 3: always a value to pointing out that the emperor is
- 4:05Speaker 3: in fact buck naked when it is Donald Trump, I
- 4:09Speaker 3: think we ought to take that risk.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Well, Robert, I guess I would pushed back a little
- 4:15Speaker 1: bit on the premise that anyone humiliated Donald Trump other
- 4:18Speaker 1: than Donald Trump. I mean, I mean the truth of
- 4:22Speaker 1: the number of times that he blinked is a data
- 4:25Speaker 1: point that exists in public. No investigative journalists dug up
- 4:30Speaker 1: the number of times Trump balked because of the poor
- 4:33Speaker 1: reception to his tariffs, and they were announced, they were paused,
- 4:38Speaker 1: they were raised, they were dropped, they were put back in,
- 4:41Speaker 1: they were pulled off. One hundred deals and one hundred
- 4:43Speaker 1: days there were none. Now there's a framework for one
- 4:45Speaker 1: with the UK and the beginning of talks in Switzerland
- 4:48Speaker 1: with China. No framework, no deal. So that's and I
- 4:52Speaker 1: am no economist, but I could read a newspaper. So
- 4:55Speaker 1: no one's humiliating Donald Trump except Donald Trump.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Look, the reason the taco trade joke, which is kind
- 5:02Speaker 4: of a dumb joke, stuck, is because it has this
- 5:05Speaker 4: huge element of truth in it. And yes, a lot
- 5:09Speaker 4: of times in the last twelve or eighteen hours since
- 5:12Speaker 4: that conversation in the White House, people have either written
- 5:15Speaker 4: me or mentioned me on social media saying this guy's
- 5:18Speaker 4: dumb joke is going to cause a recession. And I
- 5:21Speaker 4: don't like that at all. I meant to make a joke,
- 5:24Speaker 4: not cause a recession. But there is a serious question
- 5:27Speaker 4: here about as Charlotte and Charlie have just argued, so, well,
- 5:33Speaker 4: there's a serious question about a world in which you're
- 5:37Speaker 4: not allowed to make fun of the president. He's the president.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I am an inky fingered hack making a dumb joke.
- 5:47Speaker 4: I'm the one who's supposed to behave carefully around the
- 5:50Speaker 4: president of the United States. How did we get here?
- 5:53Speaker 4: I mean, this situation bizarre doesn't even begin to cover
- 5:57Speaker 4: it as far as I'm concerned.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Well, and Robert argue, if we enter into recession, it
- 6:02Speaker 1: will have nothing to do with you. It will be
- 6:04Speaker 1: done polus. He's the tippers start of recession. And if
- 6:08Speaker 1: you look at how you know, I mean, look, the
- 6:10Speaker 1: study of a body of fiction around dysfunctional families is
- 6:15Speaker 1: the same story all the time. And otherwise normal body
- 6:19Speaker 1: bends and collapses around the mentally ill or addicted or
- 6:22Speaker 1: most sick member of the family. A country is the same.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So we had the Republican party collapse onto itself around
- 6:29Speaker 1: the dysfunctional leader, and then you had all of the
- 6:34Speaker 1: you know, sort of partisan actress collapse. And now you're
- 6:36Speaker 1: seeing Trump collapse the economy around his dysfunction.
- 6:41Speaker 4: You know, it's not altogether unlike the inner circle of
- 6:46Speaker 4: Biden collapsing around him. He was frail, He was really
- 6:50Speaker 4: unqualified to be president. They knew it, and they collapsed
- 6:53Speaker 4: around him, and that was no good. And similarly, treating
- 6:58Speaker 4: the current president with kid clubs by his advisors or
- 7:01Speaker 4: by the press, or by anybody else is a bad idea.
- 7:05Speaker 4: It was a bad idea with a Democrat. It's a
- 7:07Speaker 4: bad idea with a Republican. We shouldn't do it.
