- 0:09Speaker 1: Here we go careening into the second week, the second weekend,
- 0:25Speaker 1: second full weekend of the college football season. It's okay
- 0:29Speaker 1: to say week two because that other thing was called
- 0:31Speaker 1: week zero, which won't be the case today.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Next year.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So week two of the college football season and week
- 0:37Speaker 1: number one of the National Football League season is underway.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 13
- 0:45Speaker 1: under the zone and where you can always listen to
- 0:47Speaker 1: us for free on the iHeartRadio app. My name is
- 0:50Speaker 1: Craig Wade. Glad to have you with us. Thank you
- 0:52Speaker 1: very much for joining us here on the program. The
- 0:57Speaker 1: producer of the program is Jake Herman, who told me
- 1:01Speaker 1: that You didn't watch that much of the NFL season
- 1:03Speaker 1: opener last night.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Is that correct? No, I had it on. It was
- 1:06Speaker 3: in the background. It was in the background. Yeah, I was,
- 1:08Speaker 3: you know. Working on other things, doing other things.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Working on some prep. I've got a busy weekend of
- 1:14Speaker 4: play-by-play coming up. Diving into the Ohio State Buckeyes as well.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Getting ready to talk about them on Longhorn's game day.
- 1:19Speaker 4: So it was up in the background.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:22Speaker 4: You don't get my Wednesdays to NFL just because it's
- 1:24Speaker 4: week one.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Because it's week one, they figured they'd have your attention
- 1:29Speaker 1: on that.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Maybe, maybe not. I don't know.
- 1:32Speaker 1: But it did start last night, and the defending Super
- 1:36Speaker 1: Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks survived. They beat the New England
- 1:38Speaker 1: Patriots in that Super Bowl rematch, winning that one 13-10
- 1:42Speaker 1: when the Patriots were driving for what could have been
- 1:45Speaker 1: a game-winning score, but not once, not twice, but three
- 1:47Speaker 1: times in the fourth quarter. Drake made three interceptions, and
- 1:51Speaker 1: that last one in the fourth quarter sealed the deal
- 1:53Speaker 1: on that. The other noteworthy thing to come out of
- 1:55Speaker 1: that was the, uh, was the injury to Sam Darnold
- 2:02Speaker 1: hip injury. Um, but, uh, Mike McDonald, the head coach
- 2:07Speaker 1: said they got, he called it great news and said,
- 2:10Speaker 1: there's no fracture. So they'll have a further evaluation of
- 2:13Speaker 1: that coming up. So first game is in the books.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Second game is tonight. Our time, um, Tomorrow morning, I
- 2:24Speaker 1: guess it would be, Australia time, because it's supposed to
- 2:28Speaker 1: be Friday morning Australia time, where the Los Angeles Rams
- 2:33Speaker 1: will play the.
- 2:33Speaker 3: San Francisco 49ers. I was doing some research on.
- 2:36Speaker 1: This because I read a piece about how neither side
- 2:40Speaker 1: really wanted to face each other in the first week
- 2:45Speaker 1: of the season, but it ended up happening that way anyway.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I believe, and I'll make sure to finish up, the
- 2:53Speaker 1: research on this, but I believe this is only the
- 2:56Speaker 1: second time in the two franchises history that they met
- 3:03Speaker 1: in the first week of the season. The other being 1955.
- 3:07Speaker 1: The Rams got to the NFL championship game that year
- 3:09Speaker 1: and lost to the Cleveland Browns. Of course, the 49ers
- 3:12Speaker 1: were in the old All-American Football Conference. It was part
- 3:15Speaker 1: of the merger that came in in 1950 where the 49ers,
- 3:17Speaker 1: the the Baltimore Colts came in, the Cleveland Browns came
- 3:29Speaker 1: in to the league, and that started in 1950. But
- 3:36Speaker 1: the only time that I've been able to see that
- 3:39Speaker 1: they played in the season opener was 1955. So anyway,
- 3:41Speaker 1: that'll be happening tonight, 7.30 our time on this. Let
- 3:45Speaker 1: me tell you what we have coming up here on
- 3:46Speaker 1: the program. We're about to hear some comments from Longhorn's
- 3:49Speaker 1: head coach, Steve Sarkisian. Sark doing his weekly podcast. Thursday,
- 3:54Speaker 1: media availability, the Zoom availability with the reporters, his last
- 3:59Speaker 1: contact with them before the game is played on Saturday night.
- 4:04Speaker 1: We'll hear comments from Sark throughout the course of the program.
- 4:06Speaker 1: The other thing we're going to hear, and this will
- 4:08Speaker 1: be in the 4 o'clock hour, we did our weekly
- 4:14Speaker 1: recording of Longhorn Weekly with Sark yesterday evening on the
- 4:20Speaker 1: UT campus. And we have a special guest every week.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Last week, it was Chris Del Conte, the athletic director.
- 4:28Speaker 1: This week, the special guest, none other than Mack Brown,
- 4:33Speaker 1: who knows a thing or two about having a deal
- 4:36Speaker 1: with Ohio State, having played them three times and beaten
- 4:38Speaker 1: them twice. And it was a really, really fun and
- 4:42Speaker 1: entertaining show and very insightful as well. Mack joined us
- 4:46Speaker 1: and we talked not only about those past games against
- 4:49Speaker 1: Ohio State, But his take on the state of college
- 4:51Speaker 1: football today and other things as well. And we're going
- 4:54Speaker 1: to hear that coming up, a segment from it, coming
- 4:58Speaker 1: up in the 4 o'clock hour. You'll be able to
- 4:59Speaker 1: hear the show in its entirety this evening at 6
- 5:02Speaker 1: o'clock here on 1300 The Zone. And, of course, on
- 5:05Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app and the Texas Longhorns app and online
- 5:09Speaker 1: at TexasLonghorns.com and am1300TheZone. com. You can hear that program on
- 5:14Speaker 1: all of those outlets. But here on The Zone at
- 5:17Speaker 1: 6 o'clock, Longhorn Weekly Live. with Steve Sarkeesian and our
- 5:22Speaker 1: special guest, Mack Brown. So we'll have that coming up
- 5:25Speaker 1: for you. Coming up here in a few minutes, Roger
- 5:26Speaker 1: Wallace will join us, my broadcast partner, Longhorn Football Broadcast.
- 5:30Speaker 1: He'll join us to talk a little bit about that
- 5:31Speaker 1: and also to tell you about the big week in
- 5:33Speaker 1: high school football. They have a game tonight and a
- 5:35Speaker 1: game tomorrow night. And so we'll get Roger's thoughts on
- 5:39Speaker 1: the two games that they have on tap as well
- 5:42Speaker 1: in the high school football scene.
- 5:43Speaker 2: We'll do that.
- 5:44Speaker 3: In the three o'clock hour, Gene Watson.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Our MLB insider, from the Chicago White Sox joins us
- 5:52Speaker 1: and we're getting down after this weekend having just two
- 5:54Speaker 1: weeks left in the regular season of Major League Baseball
- 5:56Speaker 1: so we'll talk to Gino about the pennant races the
- 5:59Speaker 1: the playoff chases and all of those things as well
- 6:02Speaker 1: he'll join us in the three o'clock hour and then
- 6:03Speaker 1: right out of the gate in the four o'clock hour
- 6:06Speaker 1: Cedric Golden a friend from the Austin American Statesman will
- 6:09Speaker 1: join us so Ced will join us early in the
- 6:11Speaker 1: four o'clock hour so we do have a full platter
- 6:14Speaker 1: for you this afternoon. Let's jump right in and hear
- 6:18Speaker 1: some comments from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian.
- 6:20Speaker 3: First of all, his opening comments, his opening statement.
- 6:24Speaker 5: What an exciting time for college football. Uh, the fact that, um,
- 6:29Speaker 5: you know, this week we've talked about college football and
- 6:32Speaker 5: a game as opposed to lawsuits and TROs and injunctions
- 6:37Speaker 5: and everything else. And, you know, I think that's a
- 6:39Speaker 5: credit to, um, Both programs. Obviously, we've touched on earlier
- 6:44Speaker 5: in the week just the job that Ryan Day has
- 6:46Speaker 5: done with that program at Ohio State since he's taken over,
- 6:52Speaker 5: the amount of success that he's had, the amount of
- 6:54Speaker 5: players that have gone on to the NFL, the roster
- 6:57Speaker 5: that he's assembled this year to go along with the
- 6:59Speaker 5: coaching staff that he's assembled. And we feel the same
- 7:02Speaker 5: way about our program. The fact that now the idea
- 7:06Speaker 5: of the players we're producing into the NFL is this
- 7:09Speaker 5: roster that we've assembled, this coaching staff that we've assembled,
- 7:13Speaker 5: I think both programs have garnered the attention that is
- 7:17Speaker 5: deserved for a game of this magnitude this early in
- 7:19Speaker 5: the season. I think it is phenomenal, not only for
- 7:22Speaker 5: our program, but for the entire University of Texas and
- 7:26Speaker 5: for the city of Austin, that the eyes of the
- 7:29Speaker 5: college football world, the eyes of the sporting world will
- 7:33Speaker 5: be on DKR Saturday night when this ball gets kicked
- 7:36Speaker 5: off for about the next three, three and a half hours.
- 7:38Speaker 5: And so It's an exciting time. It's an arena that
- 7:42Speaker 5: we're comfortable playing in. You know, this will be our
- 7:46Speaker 5: fifth top 10 ranked opponent in our last 10 games.
- 7:49Speaker 5: And we're three and one in the previous four matchups.
- 7:51Speaker 5: And so I think our players are trusting our process
- 7:55Speaker 5: to get prepared for this game. And they've had a
- 7:58Speaker 5: good week of work. And I know they're looking forward
- 8:00Speaker 5: to the challenge.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about, because you hear and heard
- 8:04Speaker 1: it in both press conferences this week, both Sark's press
- 8:07Speaker 1: conference and Ryan Day's. uh, press conference up at Ohio
- 8:11Speaker 1: state about how the emphasis is always building a sustainable
- 8:18Speaker 1: championship caliber program year in, year out.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And that means creating a.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Sustainable, uh, championship caliber roster. And so Sark was asked
- 8:26Speaker 1: how building that championship roster has evolved for him.
- 8:31Speaker 5: You always, especially when we first got started, right. Um,
- 8:35Speaker 5: you know, I've been at Alabama and we had a
- 8:37Speaker 5: championship team that went undefeated. And so you have an
- 8:39Speaker 5: idea of kind of what that looks like. And then,
- 8:42Speaker 5: you know, as you monitor it, as you grow and
- 8:45Speaker 5: you go through it, you know, obviously you're looking at
- 8:49Speaker 5: some of the other programs that are perennial, you know,
- 8:51Speaker 5: top five in the CFP. And at that time was
- 8:54Speaker 5: a 14 playoff. Like, what does it look like? What
- 8:56Speaker 5: do those teams look like? And then how do we
- 8:59Speaker 5: assemble a team that can compete and then ultimately beat
- 9:03Speaker 5: those teams that are, that are in those, the perennial
- 9:05Speaker 5: top four teams. And so that's what we did. And,
- 9:09Speaker 5: you know, but ultimately you have to then build your
- 9:12Speaker 5: roster to who you are and what your schemes are
- 9:15Speaker 5: and what your personnel is and the style of team
- 9:18Speaker 5: that you want to be. And so, you know, I
- 9:21Speaker 5: feel like we have built this thing progressively over the
- 9:24Speaker 5: years and there's been years, just like every year, you
- 9:26Speaker 5: have your strengths and your weaknesses at different spots and,
- 9:29Speaker 5: try to play to your strengths. And then when the
- 9:31Speaker 5: season kind of wraps up, you say, okay, where do
- 9:34Speaker 5: we need to go in the future to continue to
- 9:37Speaker 5: get better? And some of that is through high school recruiting. Nowadays,
- 9:41Speaker 5: some of that is through portal recruiting. A lot of
- 9:43Speaker 5: it is through retention of your own players, but inevitably
- 9:46Speaker 5: year in and year out at a at a place
- 9:48Speaker 5: like this, a place like Texas, you don't get that
- 9:51Speaker 5: rebuild year. It's like, how do we put a championship
- 9:56Speaker 5: roster together again the next year and the next year
- 9:59Speaker 5: and the next year? because that's that's the standard.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Around here.
- 10:03Speaker 1: No doubt about that and then one other uh comment
- 10:06Speaker 1: from uh sark this hour and again we'll we'll hear
- 10:09Speaker 1: from him throughout the course But one other comment from
- 10:13Speaker 1: him is about his veteran leaders and how important it
- 10:17Speaker 1: is for his veteran leaders to help guide some of
- 10:19Speaker 1: the younger guys through this week in getting ready to
- 10:23Speaker 1: be a part of a game of this magnitude.
- 10:25Speaker 5: When you have an arch who's been through a season now,
- 10:29Speaker 5: when you have a Trevor Goosby, when you have a
- 10:32Speaker 5: Ryan Niblett, a Connor Robertson, a Ryan Wingo, guys who
- 10:37Speaker 5: have been in it now for a few years with us,
- 10:39Speaker 5: defensively a Jelani McDonald, a Colin Simmons, right? A Kobe black,
- 10:44Speaker 5: these guys who have, who've been around us enough to
- 10:47Speaker 5: know that we don't change in weeks like this. What
- 10:50Speaker 5: we do is kind of batten down the hatches and
- 10:53Speaker 5: get even more focused on us and what we need
- 10:55Speaker 5: to do to be successful. Because I can tell you,
- 10:58Speaker 5: if I pulled every player Monday morning, does anybody, does
- 11:01Speaker 5: everybody want to win Saturday night? They'd all raise their hands.
- 11:04Speaker 5: And I say, okay, We know how to get us
- 11:07Speaker 5: to a point to where we can put ourselves in
- 11:08Speaker 5: position to win. Let's go follow suit. Let's trust our
- 11:11Speaker 5: process to get ourselves ready to go play. And I
- 11:14Speaker 5: know that's a little cliche now of trust the process,
- 11:17Speaker 5: but truly that's what we try to do in weeks
- 11:19Speaker 5: like this and not get so caught up in the
- 11:22Speaker 5: stuff going on around us, but really hunker down in
- 11:25Speaker 5: what we need to do to prepare ourselves to play
- 11:27Speaker 5: at a high level because playing at a high level
- 11:30Speaker 5: is going to be required in this game.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And believe me, there's a lot going on around. If
- 11:35Speaker 1: you go over to campus, you'll see all the TV
- 11:37Speaker 1: trucks from ESPN that are parked up by the LBJ
- 11:41Speaker 1: library and where the Longhorn City Limits concerts take place.
- 11:46Speaker 1: The LBJ lawn, all that kind of stuff. Chris Stapleton
- 11:49Speaker 1: has a concert going on there tonight. There's a concert
- 11:51Speaker 1: at Moody. In other words, unless you're going to one
- 11:53Speaker 1: of those events, you probably would do well just to
- 11:55Speaker 1: stay away from campus. You're going to get caught in
- 11:57Speaker 1: traffic and roadblocks and everything. Stuff like that as well.
- 12:00Speaker 1: But such is the state of things in a week
- 12:03Speaker 1: like this.
- 12:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Coming up, and we'll hear more from Sark throughout the
- 12:07Speaker 1: course of the program. But up next, we'll check in
- 12:09Speaker 1: with Roger Wallace, talk some long-run football, high school football,
- 12:11Speaker 1: and more. And we continue here on a Thursday on
- 12:13Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 12:16Speaker 6: Come on and in the direction he blows, he'll be fine.
- 12:20Speaker 7: Please don't say mañana.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Now, this is one I haven't heard in a while.
- 12:31Speaker 1: But whenever we have Roger Wallace doing this, it's only
- 12:35Speaker 1: apropos that we bump back with some Jimmy Buffett.
- 12:40Speaker 3: So why did you go with this particular one?
- 12:43Speaker 4: Well, we're trying to remember what the challenge was that
- 12:46Speaker 4: Roger laid down for us on Jimmy Buffett a week ago.
- 12:48Speaker 4: This is one of my personal favorites and felt like
- 12:51Speaker 4: it was on theme.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I like the lyrics when he says, you know, when
- 12:57Speaker 1: he adds it. don't try to describe a KISS concert
- 13:00Speaker 1: if you've never seen one.
- 13:02Speaker 8: You relate to that one?
- 13:04Speaker 1: Well, I worked at KISS concert when I was selling
- 13:07Speaker 1: merchandise in my collegiate days. But Roger Wallace, of course,
- 13:09Speaker 1: sports director of KXAN. my broadcast partner at Longhorn Football,
- 13:13Speaker 1: joins us. Now, where does that particular tune land on
- 13:18Speaker 1: your favorites list?
- 13:19Speaker 7: Yeah, that was a good pull, Jake. And the fact
- 13:22Speaker 7: that you said it's one of your favorites, I'm pretty
- 13:25Speaker 7: sure it's Buffett's.
- 13:26Speaker 8: Only Buffalo reference. Yeah. Talking about freezing up.
- 13:30Speaker 7: But you want to hold that song as if you
- 13:31Speaker 7: go down a little bit further. He references Steve Martin
- 13:36Speaker 7: and Getting Small.
- 13:37Speaker 8: Of course, that was an old, old Saturday Night Live bit.
- 13:40Speaker 3: 1976, I think. Yeah.
- 13:41Speaker 8: So there you go.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Wow.
- 13:46Speaker 7: So I know Jake doesn't remember that song, but it's
- 13:50Speaker 7: pretty cool that 50 years later, he's... he likes it.
- 13:53Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 13:53Speaker 4: The, the extent of my connection with that song is
- 13:56Speaker 4: it sounds good.
- 13:57Speaker 8: It's catchy.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I like it.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I got to work on my Jimmy Buffett. As many
- 14:00Speaker 3: of Buffett's catalog is.
- 14:02Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 7: I was going to say that's a, that's a pretty
- 14:04Speaker 7: common theme.
- 14:05Speaker 2: That's, that's exactly right. It's true.
- 14:06Speaker 7: Same album as, uh, last week's song. You guys play
- 14:09Speaker 7: son of a son of a sailor.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 14:11Speaker 10: It is.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Um, uh, we'll get to the high school stuff in
- 14:14Speaker 3: a minute.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I want, I want to get your thoughts on, uh, uh,
- 14:17Speaker 1: cause I know you asked Sark about this and he,
- 14:20Speaker 1: he's been asked quite a bit about, uh, dealing with
- 14:23Speaker 1: the week, and when we recorded a Longhorn Weekly last night,
- 14:28Speaker 1: Mack Brown was with us, and we talked about that,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and again, that's going to air tonight at 6 o'clock
- 14:32Speaker 1: for anybody who wants to listen to that, about the
- 14:37Speaker 1: extra thing, because coaches try to keep the main thing
- 14:41Speaker 1: the main thing, and they try to keep it in order,
- 14:42Speaker 1: but it's a little bit difficult to do on a
- 14:44Speaker 1: week like this, isn't it?
- 14:46Speaker 7: Yeah, I think there are definitely challenges of a home
- 14:49Speaker 7: game that you kind of look past because you go, okay, finally,
- 14:53Speaker 7: they've got one of these marquee games at home. You
- 14:55Speaker 7: have to go back to Alabama and Quinn Ewer's first
- 14:59Speaker 7: year when Bryce Young came in. And then ever since then,
- 15:02Speaker 7: it's been road trip to Tuscaloosa, road trip to Ann Arbor,
- 15:06Speaker 7: road trip to Columbus. So, yeah, for sure, I think–
- 15:12Speaker 7: There's some challenges. There's distractions. There's family. There's tickets. There's
- 15:17Speaker 7: all that stuff that, you know, and he said again
- 15:20Speaker 7: today on his Zoom and then talked to me in
- 15:23Speaker 7: our pregame interview for Texas Game Day is he knows
- 15:26Speaker 7: keeping the main thing, the main thing is a cliche,
- 15:28Speaker 7: but it's a cliche for a reason and the process
- 15:31Speaker 7: and all that stuff. And so I think that's what
- 15:34Speaker 7: he's banking on, that they can really treat this like
- 15:38Speaker 7: another week, even though we all know it's really not.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I think I've discovered over time that football coaches at
- 15:44Speaker 1: any level, high school, college, pro, are most comfortable when
- 15:49Speaker 1: there's a cliched phrase that fits exactly what they're, and
- 15:52Speaker 1: they're not just creating it.
- 15:54Speaker 3: There's one that just kind of fits.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And that sounds like all of that kind of stuff.
- 16:00Speaker 1: It's now become a running gag between Sark and me
- 16:03Speaker 1: every week about talking about the keys because he always
- 16:06Speaker 1: says the key is the ball. And so I believe
- 16:09Speaker 1: it was when we were in Starkville last season, and
- 16:12Speaker 1: I got to the end of the interview, and normally
- 16:14Speaker 1: I'd ask what the key is, and I said, okay, Sark,
- 16:17Speaker 1: appreciate your time. He goes, wait a minute, you didn't
- 16:18Speaker 1: ask me what the key was. And I said, because
- 16:20Speaker 1: I know it's the ball. You know, it's that kind
- 16:23Speaker 1: of thing.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Well, yeah.
- 16:24Speaker 7: And I'm taking that too for my game day. I'll go, okay,
- 16:28Speaker 7: I know it's turnovers and I know it's penalties. Give
- 16:32Speaker 7: me something else. And then I think you drill down
- 16:37Speaker 7: to some of the things he's really thinking about. And
- 16:40Speaker 7: he told me, and I'm guessing he told you.
- 16:43Speaker 8: Line of scrimmage.
- 16:44Speaker 7: We talk about all these skill guys on both sides
- 16:48Speaker 7: and all the potential highlight plays. But like any other
- 16:53Speaker 7: game like this, I think it's going to come down
- 16:55Speaker 7: to that line of scrimmage and who can establish the
- 16:58Speaker 7: run to go with what appears to be dynamic passing games.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think both, and correct me if you
- 17:05Speaker 1: see it differently, let me know, but judging kind of
- 17:09Speaker 1: from what Ryan Day not only said in his press conference,
- 17:12Speaker 1: but what the questions he was asked, he was asked
- 17:16Speaker 1: some specific early on questions about specific things members of
- 17:21Speaker 1: his offensive line and has this guy earned a little
- 17:23Speaker 1: more and what is what's your evaluation all that kind
- 17:26Speaker 1: of stuff and I know Sark was asked the same
- 17:28Speaker 1: thing throughout the course of training camp about you know
- 17:32Speaker 1: Baker moving inside and how Siani was doing out there
- 17:35Speaker 1: and you know all of those things uh that that
- 17:38Speaker 1: we've seen uh from the Longhorns uh you know um
- 17:42Speaker 1: uh that that How those specific areas of the offensive
- 17:46Speaker 1: line would do. And I think a lot of folks
- 17:47Speaker 1: are really keying in on how the offensive lines of
- 17:51Speaker 1: both teams are going to fare against these defensive fronts
- 17:56Speaker 1: of both of these teams.
- 17:58Speaker 8: I don't think there's any doubt.
- 17:59Speaker 7: I think when you and Will and I discuss our
- 18:03Speaker 7: keys before the game, that will certainly be one of
- 18:06Speaker 7: them because I don't know how great of a gauge
- 18:07Speaker 7: we got on Saturday other than the fact that after
- 18:11Speaker 7: the Smothers run on the first play, Running yards were
- 18:15Speaker 7: tough to come by. Now, the other team has something
- 18:18Speaker 7: to say about that and all that stuff that goes
- 18:21Speaker 7: with the give and the take. But for sure, I
- 18:24Speaker 7: think that Sark wants to see a little bit more.
- 18:27Speaker 8: Consistent running game. And then, what does Ohio.
- 18:31Speaker 7: State, what does it mean that the two Jacksons each
- 18:33Speaker 7: rush for over 80 each in, you know, relatively few
- 18:37Speaker 7: carries against the ball state defense compared to a Texas defense.
- 18:41Speaker 8: So yeah, I think for sure. And then keeping your
- 18:43Speaker 8: quarterback upright.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely. Roger Wallace joining us here for a few
- 18:47Speaker 3: more minutes on 1300.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Let me shift to high school. And is it safe
- 18:53Speaker 1: to say that your selection of the two games you
- 18:59Speaker 1: have on tap both on KBVO tonight and and KXAN
- 19:04Speaker 1: plus tomorrow are as much a variety as you could
- 19:10Speaker 1: have for upper classifications as you could probably expect to
- 19:13Speaker 1: pull down.
- 19:14Speaker 8: Yeah, that's probably a good call.
- 19:15Speaker 7: And I'm not afraid, but I'm using the term a
- 19:18Speaker 7: little different way. We might have a really long night
- 19:21Speaker 7: tonight because Cedar Ridge and Vista Ridge. they put up
- 19:25Speaker 7: points and they don't necessarily stop teams from, from putting
- 19:30Speaker 7: up points.
- 19:30Speaker 8: And we've had some big ones.
- 19:31Speaker 7: Our first Friday game was 91 combined at the field.
- 19:34Speaker 8: We had over 80 last week.
- 19:36Speaker 7: So I'm anticipating, you know, we saw a little bit
- 19:39Speaker 7: of Cedar Ridge before their game was called against Eastview
- 19:42Speaker 7: on the opening Thursday Vista with an impressive comeback against
- 19:46Speaker 7: Bowie last week where they.
- 19:48Speaker 8: You know, they give up 37 and they win.
- 19:50Speaker 7: So, and then Cedar Ridge, the same with Copper's Cove,
- 19:54Speaker 7: a high scoring game there.
- 19:55Speaker 8: So yeah, I think, and then tomorrow night, you've got.
- 20:00Speaker 7: Vandegrift trying to defend that slot tee on a, you know,
- 20:05Speaker 7: one week's notice at Liberty Hill.
- 20:08Speaker 1: That's the one that really leaps off the page of
- 20:10Speaker 1: me in terms of the contrast, because it wasn't that
- 20:13Speaker 1: long ago that we were thinking of Vandegrift in terms
- 20:17Speaker 1: of being a 6A program and Liberty Hill a small
- 20:21Speaker 1: 5A program now.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Liberty Hills enrollment.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Has increased quite a bit, but also the scheduling challenge
- 20:28Speaker 1: that both, you know, Drew Sanders and David Seaborn have
- 20:32Speaker 1: had trying to get non-district components. We've seen all manner
- 20:36Speaker 1: of unusual non-district schedule. I mean, You know, Westlake played Inglewood, California.
- 20:41Speaker 1: They're busing up to the Metroplex to play Prosper. I mean,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know, it's kind of difficult sometimes on some of the, especially,
- 20:49Speaker 1: it's kind of a sliding scale, isn't it?
- 20:51Speaker 3: The more success you.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Have, the less willing other coaches are willing to play you.
- 20:58Speaker 7: Well, we got a funny story from David Seaborn about
- 21:01Speaker 7: just that topic, Craig. And he said at realignment, he said,
- 21:05Speaker 7: you know, once everything came out, Drew Sanders from Vandergrift
- 21:08Speaker 7: approached him about playing. And he's like, nope, don't want
- 21:13Speaker 7: to play you.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Nope.
- 21:14Speaker 7: And then Drew and his dad coached together at Travis.
- 21:19Speaker 7: Drew said his dad was very important to him and
- 21:21Speaker 7: kind of stay in the course when things weren't going
- 21:24Speaker 7: so smooth. And so he thinks a lot of that family.
- 21:28Speaker 7: And then David told us, he goes, I'm not going
- 21:30Speaker 7: to back down from a challenge. So of course I'm
- 21:32Speaker 7: going to accept it and play it and give my
- 21:36Speaker 7: guys a chance to play against that kind of program.
- 21:39Speaker 7: So it's funny, you're right to kind to figure out
- 21:42Speaker 7: how some of the, some of these matchups are totally convenience.
- 21:45Speaker 7: And some of them, you know, maybe goes a little
- 21:47Speaker 7: bit deeper than that. And then some, like we've seen
- 21:49Speaker 7: with Westlake, especially last week is kind of desperation.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Yeah. You was Trinity last week.
- 21:55Speaker 1: And then, and then on, on top of that. Um,
- 21:59Speaker 1: this Vandegrift team, I think there's, I'm sure Drew Sanders
- 22:02Speaker 1: has told you this. There's probably still a question mark
- 22:04Speaker 1: or two about this group after they, you know, did
- 22:07Speaker 1: a good job in week one, especially with a storm
- 22:09Speaker 1: delay and then turned around last week and, and got beat, uh,
- 22:12Speaker 1: decisively in the second half by a good Johnson ball club.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:16Speaker 7: And he was, he was quick to say he's interested
- 22:19Speaker 7: to see how, how his team reacts because they're not
- 22:22Speaker 7: used to that. I mean, they, they've had so much
- 22:24Speaker 7: success lately and especially to, to, you know, kind of
- 22:27Speaker 7: get beat down like that. And so, you know he's
- 22:31Speaker 7: interested in how they react, not only to the loss,
- 22:35Speaker 7: but then adjusting to such a unique offense that they
- 22:38Speaker 7: have to defend after, you know, giving up a lot
- 22:41Speaker 7: of points last week.
- 22:42Speaker 8: So, but the beauty of.
- 22:44Speaker 7: Non-district right is they can they can, and they certainly
- 22:48Speaker 7: want to win them but they they all they're doing
- 22:51Speaker 7: is getting ready for the ones uh that count and
- 22:54Speaker 7: that's the same with our game tonight uh vista and
- 22:56Speaker 7: cedar ridge they both got another week after this so
- 22:59Speaker 7: they get a month uh to get ready for district
- 23:02Speaker 7: play which also means the field shrinks and your your
- 23:05Speaker 7: sheer odds go up of becoming one of the four
- 23:08Speaker 7: that make the postseason.
- 23:09Speaker 1: No doubt about that uh they able to find a
- 23:12Speaker 1: place for you guys to uh do the telecast tomorrow
- 23:14Speaker 1: night without yeah we're gonna be.
- 23:16Speaker 7: Right next to the sun apparently.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Out there in nature's home.
- 23:22Speaker 7: You know, I figured this is justified because we talk
- 23:28Speaker 7: about how hot it is, and usually I'm a little
- 23:31Speaker 7: chilly in an air-conditioned press box, so this is payback
- 23:34Speaker 7: where I can legitimately talk about how hot it is.
- 23:37Speaker 7: But we're excited to go out to Liberty Hill. As
- 23:39Speaker 7: you know, they put on a good show out there.
- 23:41Speaker 7: They're going to be fired up to have a program
- 23:43Speaker 7: like Vandegrift coming in, so we'll gut it out for
- 23:46Speaker 7: a few hours.
- 23:47Speaker 8: Keith might turn a little bit red, but we'll see.
- 23:50Speaker 8: We'll make it work.
- 23:51Speaker 3: And they don't call him Big Red for nothing. No kidding.
- 23:54Speaker 1: So to let folks know, here's something in common of
- 23:58Speaker 1: these games. Westlake Prosper, Vandegrift Liberty Hill, Waco U, Stony Point, McCallum,
- 24:05Speaker 1: Smithson Valley, Dripping Springs, Round Rock, and Westwood Johnson.
- 24:10Speaker 3: All of them. All of them available on KXAM +. Correct?
- 24:13Speaker 6: Correct.
- 24:15Speaker 7: Well, we don't know about Dripping Springs Round Rock. They're
- 24:17Speaker 7: trying to get their video board together at Round Rock,
- 24:19Speaker 7: and that's the hiccup in trying to get the Dragon
- 24:24Speaker 7: Stadium games for KXAM +. They've got a new video board,
- 24:27Speaker 7: so they're really fired up about it, but they're trying
- 24:30Speaker 7: to get all that worked out and make sure it works.
- 24:32Speaker 7: But the other ones you said, yes. We are increasing
- 24:36Speaker 7: the appetite and the options on KXAM Plus every week,
- 24:41Speaker 7: and we've added the games from Bob Shelton Stadium. But yeah,
- 24:46Speaker 7: it's a wave of the future, and we're holding on tight,
- 24:50Speaker 7: trying to offer as many options as possible.
- 24:52Speaker 1: So you're saying Dragon Stadium is trying to avoid being
- 24:55Speaker 1: Doak Campbell Stadium?
- 24:57Speaker 6: Correct.
- 24:58Speaker 7: Literally they've had literally they've had power issues and and
- 25:02Speaker 7: you know they're just trying to get it all buttoned
- 25:04Speaker 7: up but yeah i think that's one of the marquee
- 25:06Speaker 7: uh non-district games of the weekend don't you with uh
- 25:09Speaker 7: with round rock and dripping springs yeah that should be
- 25:11Speaker 7: a fun game.
- 25:12Speaker 1: No doubt about it no doubt hey uh have a
- 25:14Speaker 1: good call uh tonight uh try to stay a little
- 25:16Speaker 1: bit cool uh friday night so you have something left
- 25:20Speaker 1: to uh for the booth on saturday night when you're
- 25:22Speaker 1: with me.
- 25:22Speaker 7: Oh you know i'll be ready saturday evening thanks craig all.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Right thanks roger that's roger wallace KXAN sports director there.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Of course, my broadcast partner at Longhorn Football. And then
- 25:32Speaker 1: he'll be calling the play-by-play working with Keith Moreland tonight
- 25:35Speaker 1: at Gupton Stadium. Vista Ridge against Bowie. And then tomorrow night,
- 25:40Speaker 1: they'll be out in it. Out in that early September,
- 25:46Speaker 1: late afternoon, early evening sun and the warmth that accompanies
- 25:51Speaker 1: it for Vandegrift and Liberty Hill. All right, up next,
- 25:54Speaker 1: we bring you Inconceivable here on a Thursday afternoon on
- 25:57Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and EIR Radio.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
- 26:14Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Craig Way alongside the producer, Jake Herman.
- 26:18Speaker 1: We're with you up until five o'clock this afternoon. Then
- 26:22Speaker 1: it'll be Bucking BK from five to six. And then
- 26:24Speaker 1: at six o'clock, Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark. We'll review
- 26:30Speaker 1: last week's game, get you ready for the Ohio State matchup.
- 26:32Speaker 1: And we have a special guest. Mack Brown is with
- 26:34Speaker 1: us virtually the entire program. We had a lot of
- 26:37Speaker 1: fun with this talk and about not only his experiences
- 26:40Speaker 1: in the three matchups he had with the Buckeyes, winning
- 26:43Speaker 1: two of those, the 2005 National Championship season and the
- 26:47Speaker 1: January 2009 Fiesta Bowl, and also the loss to Ohio
- 26:53Speaker 1: State 20 years ago. The last time, and that was
- 26:57Speaker 1: here in Austin, the last time the Buckeyes were in town,
- 27:00Speaker 1: and they went on to win the National Championship. But
- 27:03Speaker 1: we'll talk about a lot of other things, too, with
- 27:05Speaker 1: regard to the state of college football these days, this
- 27:09Speaker 1: particular Longhorn team. So Matt Brown will join us tonight along, obviously,
- 27:14Speaker 1: with Coach Sark, Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark. It's coming
- 27:17Speaker 1: up three hours from now at 6 o'clock here on
- 27:20Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone. Speaking of Coach Sark, he did his,
- 27:24Speaker 1: and coming up in a few minutes, we shift to baseball.
- 27:26Speaker 1: We'll talk baseball with Gene Watson, our MLB insider. We'll
- 27:31Speaker 1: do that coming up in just a few moments. But
- 27:34Speaker 1: as I mentioned, we were going to let you hear
- 27:37Speaker 1: a little bit more from Coach Sark this hour, and
- 27:40Speaker 1: we'll hear some more next hour as well. He was
- 27:43Speaker 1: asked in the media availability that when there's all of
- 27:49Speaker 1: this hype and excitement and, yes, pressure that surrounds a
- 27:56Speaker 1: big game like this, and coaches believe do their level
- 28:00Speaker 1: best to try to deflect it and to alleviate some
- 28:03Speaker 1: of that on the players so that they don't feel that.
- 28:06Speaker 1: But Sark was asked if the coaches and coaches in
- 28:10Speaker 1: general allow themselves to embrace the pressure of these type
- 28:14Speaker 1: of big games.
- 28:14Speaker 5: I don't know, man. I feel like I've been in
- 28:16Speaker 5: a lot of big games over the years as an
- 28:19Speaker 5: assistant coach, as a head coach at different programs. this
- 28:23Speaker 5: is what you love. I mean, you want these games.
- 28:28Speaker 5: I'm like the players. I didn't come to Texas just
- 28:32Speaker 5: to say I could be a head coach again. I
- 28:34Speaker 5: came to Texas to be part of games like this,
- 28:37Speaker 5: to be part of a team that's trying to compete
- 28:39Speaker 5: for a championship every year, to do those things. And
- 28:43Speaker 5: so I don't necessarily feel pressure in these games. I
- 28:48Speaker 5: feel like The week, the challenge to get ready to
- 28:52Speaker 5: compete against the roster, the coaches and the things that
- 28:56Speaker 5: Ohio State has to offer like that's the challenge. And
- 28:59Speaker 5: then the challenge is making sure that our coaches and
- 29:01Speaker 5: players are prepared for the moment.
- 29:03Speaker 8: Right.
- 29:03Speaker 5: When Saturday night rolls around and that's. but that's why
- 29:06Speaker 5: we do what we do. And so I don't necessarily
- 29:08Speaker 5: feel pressure. I feel like men, we've earned the right
- 29:11Speaker 5: to be on this stage. Um, if we weren't any good,
- 29:15Speaker 5: I promise you there wouldn't be college game day here.
- 29:17Speaker 5: If we weren't any good, we probably wouldn't be a sellout.
- 29:20Speaker 5: If we weren't any good, it might not be on
- 29:22Speaker 5: national television at night, but.
- 29:24Speaker 6: You know what?
- 29:24Speaker 5: We're pretty good. And we've earned that to, to get
- 29:26Speaker 5: ourselves to this point. So let's go enjoy the moment.
- 29:29Speaker 5: Let's go play good football and, um, put our best
- 29:32Speaker 5: foot forward and, and, and see what happens.
- 29:34Speaker 3: All right.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Um, The question, I believe, this was from Mike Hardball-Hart.
- 29:40Speaker 1: asked this question, right?
- 29:41Speaker 3: Wanted to know about how much.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Motive and initiative was placed on getting the tight end involved.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Spencer Shannon caught his first pass as a log horn
- 29:52Speaker 1: last week. And they were able to get all four
- 29:55Speaker 1: tight ends involved. So the Hards was asking the head coach,
- 29:58Speaker 1: was there a focus to get the tight end involved
- 30:01Speaker 1: early in the game?
- 30:02Speaker 5: I don't know necessarily if it was a focus. You know,
- 30:04Speaker 5: nothing was like overly intentional in the game last Saturday.
- 30:11Speaker 5: It was more about let's go operate and. the ball's
- 30:13Speaker 5: going to go where it's supposed to go, somewhat predicated
- 30:16Speaker 5: on what the defense did. I didn't know. Texas State
- 30:21Speaker 5: had a new defensive coordinator. I didn't know if he
- 30:23Speaker 5: was going to run what he had ran at his
- 30:24Speaker 5: previous stops or if he was going to have a
- 30:26Speaker 5: new scheme or carry over some of the stuff that
- 30:28Speaker 5: Texas State had done previously. So you kind of just
- 30:31Speaker 5: have to run your stuff. And then the quarterback's got
- 30:35Speaker 5: to have a really good feel for distributing the ball.
- 30:37Speaker 5: And I really thought Arch– For the most part, the
- 30:40Speaker 5: ball went where it was supposed to go outside of
- 30:42Speaker 5: a couple plays. And even when KJ, when he got
- 30:45Speaker 5: in there, the ball found the tight ends, which is
- 30:47Speaker 5: a good thing. Because, you know, ultimately, if you're going
- 30:50Speaker 5: to deploy people on Cam and on Ryan and on
- 30:53Speaker 5: Emmett and Relique and Hollywood, well, the tight ends can
- 30:56Speaker 5: get lost in that shuffle. And they can be great
- 30:58Speaker 5: outlets and they can be great, you know, opportunities for
- 31:01Speaker 5: explosive plays, you know, if we take advantage of those
- 31:04Speaker 5: looks when they are getting guarded.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Okay, now a really interesting question.
- 31:08Speaker 1: This was something that also that Sark and Matt Brown
- 31:13Speaker 1: and I discussed coming up along with Weekly tonight at
- 31:15Speaker 1: 6 o'clock. And this is about the possibility of the
- 31:19Speaker 1: college football playoff expansion. Thomas Jones of the Austin American
- 31:23Speaker 1: Statesman asked this question because the, and we mentioned this
- 31:26Speaker 1: on this program, that the CFP committee is allowing ESPN
- 31:31Speaker 1: to open that exclusive 30-day negotiating window because they are,
- 31:37Speaker 1: right now, the exclusive rights holder for the CFP. So
- 31:42Speaker 1: they get a 30-day window to negotiate what it would
- 31:47Speaker 1: be if this, indeed, is expanded to 24.
- 31:52Speaker 3: As early as next year, maybe.
- 31:54Speaker 5: Yes.
- 31:54Speaker 3: That's why they're opening the window now.
- 31:57Speaker 5: And.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I would say the mere fact that they have been
- 32:02Speaker 1: instructed that that window is open for them tells me
- 32:06Speaker 1: that it's probably one big step closer. We've heard about
- 32:08Speaker 1: the things about the SEC being more aligned with the
- 32:13Speaker 1: 2014 playoffs since the revenue share coming off of that
- 32:17Speaker 1: would help offset the $ 100 million windfall that they would
- 32:21Speaker 1: lose by not having an SEC championship game. Also, getting
- 32:25Speaker 1: agreement from the Big Ten schools on playing 10 power
- 32:30Speaker 1: four opponents, including their conference opponents.
- 32:33Speaker 8: Looking at you, Kurt Signetti.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Yeah. So with that in mind, and.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Again, Thomas Jones was asking Sark the question about that,
- 32:45Speaker 1: would a 2014 playoff be good for these kinds of
- 32:51Speaker 1: matchups or could it damage these type of a big
- 32:55Speaker 1: time non-conference high level football matchups?
- 33:00Speaker 10: I don't know.
- 33:00Speaker 5: That's a good question. I really haven't thought about that.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Um, I don't know.
- 33:06Speaker 5: I would think they would encourage them. Um, I would
- 33:12Speaker 5: hope that it wouldn't diminish the magnitude of it though.
- 33:15Speaker 6: Right.
- 33:16Speaker 5: Um, and I think that's probably one of the concerns
- 33:18Speaker 5: for those that are advocating for not expanding is the, um,
- 33:23Speaker 5: importance of the regular season in college football, you know, that,
- 33:27Speaker 5: you know, if we, if we, if we expand, one
- 33:29Speaker 5: of the arguments is that, well, now we're getting a
- 33:32Speaker 5: watered down regular season. And I think one of the
- 33:35Speaker 5: beauties of our sport is because of games like we're
- 33:38Speaker 5: having Saturday and the, and what that game could mean
- 33:41Speaker 5: big picture down the road. Um, and then when we
- 33:45Speaker 5: get into conference play, how valuable those games are. So
- 33:48Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 33:48Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 33:49Speaker 5: I don't know how that will be viewed. And, um,
- 33:53Speaker 5: what direction coaches, ADs, presidents will want to go in
- 33:56Speaker 5: and what that looks like. I've said all along, I
- 33:59Speaker 5: hope we can keep these games. And I'm not saying
- 34:02Speaker 5: we need to go more in the CFPs. All I'm
- 34:06Speaker 5: saying is reward the teams that are playing in these games.
- 34:09Speaker 5: Let's not punish the teams that play in these games.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Yeah, good point there.
- 34:13Speaker 1: All right, we'll hear more from Sark coming up a
- 34:15Speaker 1: little bit later this hour and then certainly next hour
- 34:17Speaker 1: as well. Before we get to break, I want to
- 34:19Speaker 1: get to a couple of– Text questions. Our man CB asked,
- 34:25Speaker 1: what do you remember your favorite memory from 21 years
- 34:28Speaker 1: ago today in Columbus when the Longhorns won that game
- 34:31Speaker 1: 25-22 over Ohio State? I remember the atmosphere, how crazy
- 34:34Speaker 1: it was, that nighttime atmosphere. The catch to Limus Swede
- 34:40Speaker 1: happened kind of down in the corner of the end
- 34:42Speaker 1: zone near where we were. We weren't all the way
- 34:44Speaker 1: down in the corner, but we were shaded toward that end.
- 34:46Speaker 1: And so we had a really good bird's eye view.
- 34:48Speaker 1: look at that, and I also remember them forcing a
- 34:50Speaker 1: fumble from Justin Zwick late in the game, those are things,
- 34:53Speaker 1: just remember how big the environment was for that game,
- 34:57Speaker 1: and I think it'll be similarly styled that way, all right,
- 35:02Speaker 1: and we got a couple of questions with regard to
- 35:09Speaker 1: some things we had, that we were talking about with
- 35:13Speaker 1: Roger Wallace, somebody said, I hate to be that guy,
- 35:16Speaker 1: but let's get Smalls' Steve Martin album completely separate from
- 35:20Speaker 1: Saturday Night Live. While a frequent guest, he was never
- 35:22Speaker 1: a cast member. I don't think Rodgers said he was
- 35:23Speaker 1: a cast member, but he said he did it on
- 35:25Speaker 1: Saturday Night Live. I saw it, and you would know
- 35:27Speaker 1: that as a self-described SNL nerd. We know that Steve
- 35:31Speaker 1: was never a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live.
- 35:35Speaker 1: But he's a member of the Five Timers Club. Remember
- 35:37Speaker 1: all that? That was a great skit later on that.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Love that.
- 35:40Speaker 1: And then he said, I'm sure it was just a misspeak,
- 35:42Speaker 1: but as you went to break, you said Vista Ridge
- 35:44Speaker 1: playing Bowie. Yeah, that was a misspeak. I know they're
- 35:46Speaker 1: playing Cedar Ridge. They beat Bowie last week.
- 35:51Speaker 3: You know why I know this?
- 35:52Speaker 1: If I said that wrong, my daughter, who's the associate
- 35:55Speaker 1: director of the Star Steppers for Vista Ridge, all four
- 35:59Speaker 1: of my kids are Vista Ridge graduates, they would have
- 36:01Speaker 1: let me hear about that for sure.
- 36:04Speaker 4: So.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Thanks for the attentive listening. I do appreciate that. All right,
- 36:07Speaker 1: up next, we talk baseball. We'll visit with Gene Watson,
- 36:10Speaker 1: our MLB insider, from the Chicago White Sox front office
- 36:13Speaker 1: here on 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Here's some real-time baseball update stuff for you.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Astros. Got a home run. Who was it? Cam Smith
- 36:25Speaker 3: hit it? In the ninth, Cam Smith.
- 36:27Speaker 1: A home run to beat the Phillies. Big win for Houston.
- 36:31Speaker 1: 2-1 was the final in that one. And the Rangers
- 36:35Speaker 1: and Mariners are underway.
- 36:36Speaker 3: They're scoreless. Bottom of the first.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Inning with Jacob DeGrom on the mound for Texas. Important
- 36:44Speaker 1: game for Texas. And, of course, they're all important when
- 36:46Speaker 1: we get to September, and that's why we're visiting with
- 36:49Speaker 1: Gene Watson, our MLB insider, who joins us here from
- 36:53Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox front office. Gino, do you sense in
- 36:56Speaker 1: all the years that you've been around baseball, do you
- 36:59Speaker 1: sense that updated, refocused, re-energized intensity that could happen to
- 37:08Speaker 1: teams once they get to September? I know as a
- 37:10Speaker 1: Dodger fan, I sense it now with this group because
- 37:12Speaker 1: they really just kind of slept walked and stumbled their
- 37:15Speaker 1: way through August. Now they've won seven in a row.
- 37:18Speaker 1: And that's without Otani in the lineup and still kind
- 37:22Speaker 1: of banged up a little bit.
- 37:23Speaker 3: But do you get.
- 37:24Speaker 1: That sense, not only from your ball club, but other
- 37:28Speaker 1: teams as well, about now how important it is these
- 37:31Speaker 1: games in September?
- 37:34Speaker 7: Yes, and thanks for having me, Greg.
- 37:35Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, it's these teams that are accustomed to winning.
- 37:40Speaker 9: They know they're a playoff team. You kind of go
- 37:44Speaker 9: through the season.
- 37:44Speaker 2: You put up your numbers.
- 37:46Speaker 9: You do what you do to win games because you
- 37:49Speaker 9: know you're going to win games. And then the bell rings,
- 37:52Speaker 9: and it begins to cool off. And Fox Sports and
- 37:55Speaker 9: Ken Rosenthal and the boys show up. And then it
- 37:58Speaker 9: becomes real. And those teams that know they're destined for October,
- 38:03Speaker 9: they can turn it on. And a lot of teams
- 38:05Speaker 9: can and can't do that, but the good ones can.
- 38:08Speaker 9: And it's a really– it's the best time of year
- 38:13Speaker 9: when you talk about What we have as far as
- 38:15Speaker 9: the races are concerned with the wild cards this year, baseball, college,
- 38:19Speaker 9: football going on, this is the best time of year in.
- 38:22Speaker 2: The sports world.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you there.
- 38:26Speaker 1: With regard to that deal about dealing with the games
- 38:29Speaker 1: of September and the importance of those, I want to
- 38:32Speaker 1: ask you about your ball club because at first glance,
- 38:35Speaker 1: folks would say, okay, it's a young ball club. They
- 38:37Speaker 1: dropped seven of their last 10. They dropped two in
- 38:39Speaker 1: a row to the Pirates. They must be about ready
- 38:41Speaker 1: to fall off the cliff. But you know what? I
- 38:43Speaker 1: don't see Cleveland rushing to overtake. Yeah, it's just a
- 38:47Speaker 1: two-game back difference, but they're only five and five in
- 38:49Speaker 1: their last 10. Twins are only five and five. in
- 38:52Speaker 1: their last 10. And we've been talking about the American
- 38:56Speaker 1: League West just kind of hovering at or just a
- 38:57Speaker 1: little bit above the 500 mark. What about the daily
- 39:00Speaker 1: grind and the toll it takes on these teams just
- 39:04Speaker 1: trying to push through when they're in a pennant race?
- 39:08Speaker 1: Because it's not just one team falling off. Several teams
- 39:12Speaker 1: are experiencing these difficult times right now.
- 39:15Speaker 9: I remember 2003, we lost. I want to say eight
- 39:19Speaker 9: out of 11 from September one to the 12th. And
- 39:23Speaker 9: had the Phillies not lost every night we did, we
- 39:26Speaker 9: probably don't win the wild card and probably don't move
- 39:28Speaker 9: on to win the world series. And it's just a
- 39:31Speaker 9: real pressure's time. It's one of the things we talked
- 39:34Speaker 9: about in a meeting yesterday was like, first of all,
- 39:38Speaker 9: we didn't expect to be here. So, you know, on
- 39:41Speaker 9: September 8th, we have a two game lead in the
- 39:43Speaker 9: American league central and we got to enjoy this. And, and,
- 39:46Speaker 9: you know, I mentioned the part of, about, you know,
- 39:48Speaker 9: being on the back end of 14 straight division series,
- 39:52Speaker 9: playoff appearances in Atlanta. And you don't know that you're
- 39:56Speaker 9: not about to be in the beginning of one of
- 39:58Speaker 9: those runs, but you got to enjoy today. And as
- 40:01Speaker 9: pressure as it is, and that's the message that, that
- 40:03Speaker 9: we're going to be sending to our players in the
- 40:05Speaker 9: coming days is like, nobody thought.
- 40:07Speaker 2: We'd be here.
- 40:08Speaker 8: So what do you have to lose?
- 40:09Speaker 9: And so every team that's pushing right now, it's a
- 40:13Speaker 9: little bit different. The Houston Astros, the expectations have always
- 40:18Speaker 9: driven the results. And every year somebody wants to count
- 40:20Speaker 9: them out, they find a way to win every year.
- 40:23Speaker 9: Their process is the way they do things. but mostly
- 40:27Speaker 9: driven by Jim Crane's expectations. They drive the results. And
- 40:31Speaker 9: so when you look at the teams that are all
- 40:34Speaker 9: involved in the playoffs right now, that's kind of the
- 40:36Speaker 9: driving force behind with each team, but each team is
- 40:39Speaker 9: also in a completely different scenario like we are right now.
- 40:42Speaker 3: No doubt about it.
- 40:43Speaker 1: And toward that end, let me keep it in the
- 40:45Speaker 1: American League and talking about in the West where the
- 40:49Speaker 1: Astros going in today had that two-game lead on the Rangers.
- 40:53Speaker 1: The Rangers are just also a game and a half
- 40:55Speaker 1: back of the Guardians for the wild cards, Bob, but
- 40:57Speaker 1: you called it two months ago. You said, I still
- 41:00Speaker 1: think Toronto's going to have something to save when all
- 41:02Speaker 1: this was said and done, and they were well below.
- 41:03Speaker 5: 500.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Now they're back within a game of. 500, and they're
- 41:05Speaker 1: only one game out. And the Orioles are three back
- 41:09Speaker 1: right now. You know, Minnesota's four and a half. Seattle's
- 41:13Speaker 1: trying to hang in there at five and a half.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Is this thing starting to narrow, even though it's been
- 41:19Speaker 1: so wide open throughout the course of the season, as
- 41:22Speaker 1: to which of these teams will be true contenders over
- 41:24Speaker 1: the final two weekends of the season to grab that
- 41:26Speaker 1: third wild card spot? Guardians, Jays, Rangers, maybe the Orioles,
- 41:31Speaker 1: maybe the Twins, that sort of thing?
- 41:33Speaker 9: Yeah, and I think what you're hopeful is that you
- 41:35Speaker 9: have a trick, a card up your sleeve to play,
- 41:40Speaker 9: whether it's in your minor league system or somebody coming
- 41:42Speaker 9: back from a medical that can kind of give your
- 41:46Speaker 9: team an energy boost, just a lift. And so that
- 41:50Speaker 9: would be helpful. But, you know, Toronto, you know, they
- 41:53Speaker 9: put it in overdrive when they knew they had to
- 41:54Speaker 9: do it to get back to where they wanted to be.
- 41:57Speaker 9: So that's really kind of where it is. I think
- 41:59Speaker 9: that I'm just still so shocked by Seattle. I can't imagine.
- 42:04Speaker 9: They've got some important games against Houston coming up. I
- 42:07Speaker 9: can't imagine with that pitching that they don't try to
- 42:10Speaker 9: make a late push.
- 42:11Speaker 5: And then most.
- 42:12Speaker 9: Teams are going to manage, as I've said before, they're
- 42:15Speaker 9: going to manage their bullpens a little differently. The earliest
- 42:20Speaker 9: leverage situations to win or lose a game, you may
- 42:23Speaker 9: see their best relievers come in in the sixth. instead
- 42:25Speaker 9: of the ninth because that game means so much. And
- 42:27Speaker 9: so you'll see a lot of different ways that teams
- 42:30Speaker 9: are being managed. You'll see a lot of different ways
- 42:32Speaker 9: that teams monitor their player personnel moving forward, but it's
- 42:36Speaker 9: going to be a tremendous October.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Talking baseball with Gene Watson here on 1300 to the Zone.
- 42:41Speaker 1: All right, Gino, let's shift to the National League. And
- 42:45Speaker 1: I'm going to start, obviously, in the division. The one
- 42:48Speaker 1: division race that really still is kind of closing in
- 42:51Speaker 1: on being up for grabs is the East. The Braves
- 42:54Speaker 1: have gone through a tough stretch where they dropped six
- 42:56Speaker 1: to their last 10, but they did win today after
- 42:59Speaker 1: losing three in a row. And the Phillies dropped that
- 43:01Speaker 1: heartbreaker to the Astros. So they're four games back. They
- 43:04Speaker 1: have that other series coming up between the two after
- 43:06Speaker 1: they split the four games earlier. How important is it
- 43:12Speaker 1: for one team or the other to actually win that
- 43:15Speaker 1: series to take two out of three and to make
- 43:17Speaker 1: a big push? Is that more incumbent on Philadelphia since
- 43:19Speaker 1: they're four games back now?
- 43:21Speaker 3: I mean, not really.
- 43:23Speaker 9: I think that momentum is the next day's starting pitcher,
- 43:26Speaker 9: and there's still a lot of drama to be played
- 43:29Speaker 9: out in the National League East. They're very high-caliber teams,
- 43:33Speaker 9: and as I've said, where I felt like The Dodgers,
- 43:37Speaker 9: for me, were the hands-on favorite to win their third
- 43:40Speaker 9: world championship. What Milwaukee has done and the momentum they have.
- 43:45Speaker 9: And when you look at Philly and Atlanta and the rosters,
- 43:48Speaker 9: I don't know that it's going to be as easy
- 43:50Speaker 9: as we first thought. But you can clearly see that
- 43:54Speaker 9: the National League is more dominant from a player personnel standpoint,
- 43:58Speaker 9: from a team standpoint, the impact of the lineups. And
- 44:01Speaker 9: just the beating that the American League has put on
- 44:04Speaker 9: each other this year. You can clearly see a gap.
- 44:07Speaker 9: I'd be shocked if the National League didn't win the
- 44:08Speaker 9: World Series again this year. But still a lot of
- 44:11Speaker 9: baseball yet to be played. And you've got four really
- 44:14Speaker 9: good teams existing in the National League.
- 44:16Speaker 1: And you know, it's also interesting, too, when I look
- 44:18Speaker 1: at this wildcard picture there. Where the Phillies have the
- 44:22Speaker 1: edge on the Cubs. But you have the Padres and
- 44:24Speaker 1: Diamondbacks are separated by a mere half game. And then
- 44:27Speaker 1: it drops five further back to the Pirates, who probably
- 44:30Speaker 1: won't be able to catch the rest of those.
- 44:32Speaker 3: But then the other thing.
- 44:33Speaker 1: That I've noticed, I've heard more conversation than I ever have.
- 44:39Speaker 1: And this doesn't just include the Dodgers. It includes the Brewers.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I've heard the same thing on the telecast. uh, you know,
- 44:45Speaker 1: so I've, I've, I've heard the same thing on that.
- 44:48Speaker 1: And even with the National League East, but especially with the, uh,
- 44:52Speaker 1: with the Dodgers and the Brewers, and this is the
- 44:54Speaker 1: business of getting that buy. And we talked about this
- 44:58Speaker 1: last week and you mentioned, Hey, look, you know, you're
- 45:01Speaker 1: a believer in playing in the here and now and
- 45:02Speaker 1: the rest versus Russ thing can come back and bite you, uh,
- 45:05Speaker 1: in the rear end. If you're not, if you're not
- 45:07Speaker 1: careful about that, but, um, for teams that have established veterans,
- 45:13Speaker 1: guys who have been around longer, the Brewers and certainly
- 45:15Speaker 1: the Dodgers, who had to put Shohei Otani on the
- 45:18Speaker 1: injured list at 15 days since he's a two-way player
- 45:21Speaker 1: and could be back the last week of the season.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Is the bye a little bit more beneficial to those
- 45:27Speaker 1: clubs who have guys who are longer in the tooth
- 45:30Speaker 1: and could probably use a.
- 45:31Speaker 3: Little more rest?
- 45:33Speaker 9: Possibly and maybe, especially if your bullpen has been taxed.
- 45:36Speaker 9: down the stretch to get you in there. There's a
- 45:40Speaker 9: real possibility of that, but on the, on the national
- 45:42Speaker 9: league side of what we're seeing about Toronto, the teams
- 45:45Speaker 9: that expected to be there, the teams that had high expectations,
- 45:48Speaker 9: look at.
- 45:49Speaker 8: What the Padres are doing.
- 45:49Speaker 3: They've won four in a row.
- 45:51Speaker 5: They've got a really good team.
- 45:53Speaker 9: They're pushing the threshold now. They know where they're supposed
- 45:56Speaker 9: to be. And so they're putting in an overdrive just
- 45:59Speaker 9: like Toronto is. But I want to tell you, Craig,
- 46:01Speaker 9: you better pay attention to the Pittsburgh Pirates next year.
- 46:04Speaker 9: They have a very, very good baseball team. And in 2014,
- 46:08Speaker 9: they came into Kansas City. And we won two of
- 46:13Speaker 9: the three games, but they kicked our rears for three days.
- 46:15Speaker 9: And this is a very fundamentally sound baseball team. They
- 46:19Speaker 9: can really hit. Donnie Kelly has done an amazing job
- 46:23Speaker 9: of managing this roster. They're young, they're hungry, and they're
- 46:27Speaker 9: going to have something to say about the National League
- 46:29Speaker 9: Central next year.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Well, you tell me if I'm wrong, Gino, don't they
- 46:32Speaker 1: have arguably the best pure hitter in the National League
- 46:35Speaker 1: in Nick Gonzalez?
- 46:37Speaker 8: No question.
- 46:38Speaker 9: And Connor Griffin is going to be a star. I
- 46:39Speaker 9: got to spend time with him in the draft last
- 46:42Speaker 9: year out of Jackson, Mississippi and a couple of years
- 46:45Speaker 9: ago and spend some time with him yesterday here at
- 46:47Speaker 9: the ballpark. And just so proud of what he's been
- 46:50Speaker 9: able to do. And yeah, they got.
- 46:53Speaker 3: A really young team.
- 46:54Speaker 9: They've got a great manager and, this is a team
- 46:56Speaker 9: that's going to create a lot of noise in the
- 46:58Speaker 9: National League Central next year.
- 46:59Speaker 3: I got to believe in the Pirates.
- 47:01Speaker 1: It's probably just as unlikely for folks to envision what
- 47:04Speaker 1: your ball club has done to be leading here on
- 47:06Speaker 1: September 10th, and it's probably just as unlikely for folks
- 47:10Speaker 1: to think that the Pirates would be at level 500,
- 47:11Speaker 1: and yet here they are at 73 and 73. Okay,
- 47:15Speaker 1: one other thing I wanted to ask you about. Like
- 47:17Speaker 1: I said, the Dodgers have put Shoya Ohtani on the
- 47:20Speaker 1: injured list. He pretty much said the other day he's
- 47:23Speaker 1: done pitching for the year. They're just trying to get
- 47:25Speaker 1: him healthy. for the stretch drive with that bat in
- 47:28Speaker 1: the lineup. But they have called up a guy I
- 47:31Speaker 1: know you're very familiar with because the way you comb
- 47:34Speaker 1: the minor leagues and what you know of all of
- 47:36Speaker 1: the systems, is it Josue or Josue DePaula that they
- 47:40Speaker 1: call him?
- 47:41Speaker 3: How does he pronounce his name?
- 47:42Speaker 9: Jose DePaula. This is one of the more young, impactful players.
- 47:48Speaker 9: This would be like bringing up Andrew Jones with Atlanta
- 47:50Speaker 9: back in the, in the 90s this guy is a
- 47:53Speaker 9: rock star Miguel Cabrera that type of impactful bat and
- 47:58Speaker 9: he's the one of the best young prospects in the
- 48:01Speaker 9: game of baseball what makes it so great for him
- 48:03Speaker 9: is like he doesn't have to carry the load the
- 48:05Speaker 9: team is already very good he can come in and
- 48:08Speaker 9: just blend in and contribute where he can and for
- 48:11Speaker 9: me the most important thing about Shohei is Just get
- 48:14Speaker 9: him right. There's no sense in rushing. You know you're
- 48:17Speaker 9: going to be in. There's no sense in pushing it.
- 48:19Speaker 9: Just get him right and get him healthy. You can
- 48:22Speaker 9: send him to Arizona if need be and get him
- 48:25Speaker 9: leading off all the at-bats in the instruction league games there.
- 48:30Speaker 9: The health of him is going to be the key
- 48:32Speaker 9: to their advancement in the playoffs this year.
- 48:35Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Okay, let me exit with this. Uh,
- 48:40Speaker 1: give me your picks in the NFL. Who do you like?
- 48:43Speaker 1: Who do you like in the AFC? Who do you
- 48:44Speaker 1: like in the NFC? Cause I know you follow the
- 48:46Speaker 1: NFL so closely.
- 48:47Speaker 9: I have, I, I, I, no, I'm a, I'm a
- 48:50Speaker 9: Texan fan. And one of my young men from the, uh,
- 48:53Speaker 9: from the university of Texas, Charlie Atkins is the cat
- 48:55Speaker 9: cat man for the lions. And so I just pay
- 48:58Speaker 9: attention to the lions, but I knew, I do know
- 49:00Speaker 9: I was at Lambeau Sunday night and the Irish look
- 49:02Speaker 9: pretty good.
- 49:04Speaker 3: Uh, did you like those uniforms? You're kind of traditional.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Like I am.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Were you okay with the dark blue with the, with
- 49:09Speaker 1: the gold numerals on them?
- 49:11Speaker 9: We were on the sidelines pregame, got to hang out
- 49:13Speaker 9: with Joanna Freeman and a bunch of my friends that
- 49:15Speaker 9: are coaches and in pregame when the sun was up,
- 49:19Speaker 9: it was a beautiful look. During the game, with the
- 49:22Speaker 9: sun down and the lights on those uniforms, it was
- 49:25Speaker 9: more like a video game than it was. It was
- 49:29Speaker 9: a very bizarre scene for a night game and those
- 49:32Speaker 9: types of uniforms, but an unbelievable setting at Lambeau Field,
- 49:35Speaker 9: one I'll never forget.
- 49:36Speaker 1: I know that Notre Dame and Texas are kind of
- 49:38Speaker 1: one and one A in your rooting list. You're not
- 49:41Speaker 1: in town for this little football shindig they've got going
- 49:43Speaker 1: here Saturday night with Ohio State.
- 49:45Speaker 8: Are you?
- 49:46Speaker 9: Only if somebody wants to donate two tickets.
- 49:48Speaker 3: I could get there.
- 49:50Speaker 8: No, I'm not playing about that.
- 49:52Speaker 6: All right.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Hey, listen, I appreciate it. We'll look forward to doing this.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Heading down the stretch next week. We'll make sure to
- 49:59Speaker 1: check in with you.
- 49:59Speaker 3: Appreciate it, Gino.
- 50:00Speaker 8: All right, Craig.
- 50:01Speaker 3: Thanks so much.
- 50:01Speaker 2: Talk to you soon.
- 50:02Speaker 3: You bet.
- 50:02Speaker 1: That is Gene Watson, our MLB insider. His team is
- 50:06Speaker 1: still leading the American League Central. I know nobody expected that.
- 50:09Speaker 1: They didn't expect it. Like he said, they didn't expect
- 50:12Speaker 1: to be there. And even though they've stumbled a little bit, hey,
- 50:14Speaker 1: they're still in the thick of the fight.
- 50:16Speaker 3: They're up two games on the Guardians there.
- 50:18Speaker 1: And even if they wind up not winning the division,
- 50:20Speaker 1: they're still in line perhaps to get the third wildcard
- 50:22Speaker 1: spot if they don't wind up holding on to the
- 50:25Speaker 1: American League Central. But they have a chance, Jake, not
- 50:29Speaker 1: only to win the Central, they have a chance.
- 50:30Speaker 3: To get a bye.
- 50:32Speaker 6: Unbelievable.
- 50:32Speaker 4: And they keep finding ways to piece together enough pitching. Yeah,
- 50:36Speaker 4: there have been days recently where it hasn't all clicked
- 50:38Speaker 4: for them, but they're finding the pitching. They're finding guys
- 50:41Speaker 4: who are just filling in. And I remember back in May,
- 50:45Speaker 4: we were talking about, well, when Munataka Murakami goes down,
- 50:48Speaker 4: how can the White Sox keep their head above water?
- 50:50Speaker 3: And boy, have they done that and then some. Yeah,
- 50:53Speaker 3: no doubt about it.
- 50:53Speaker 1: And I was asking about that Dodger prospect that they're
- 50:56Speaker 1: bringing up. No, it's not a free acquisition. They actually
- 51:00Speaker 1: have a really good farm system. It's spelled, his name
- 51:02Speaker 1: is J-O-S-U-E. But as he said, it's pronounced, he believes, Josue,
- 51:08Speaker 1: Josue DePaula. And he's spent, I think, most of the
- 51:12Speaker 1: season at Tulsa in AA playing for the Drillers. But
- 51:16Speaker 1: now he's on the big league roster when they made
- 51:18Speaker 1: that roster move yesterday to put Shohei Ohtani on the
- 51:22Speaker 1: injured list.
- 51:23Speaker 4: Will he make the playoff roster? That's what we're all
- 51:25Speaker 4: watching for here. I think that's also going to depend
- 51:27Speaker 4: on health. We'll see how some of the other guys
- 51:29Speaker 4: have been banged up and how they fare. And, of course,
- 51:32Speaker 4: as we know, the playoff roster can be altered. by
- 51:35Speaker 4: each successive round of the playoffs.
- 51:37Speaker 8: That's right.
- 51:38Speaker 5: I keep forgetting it's not like hockey on that.
- 51:40Speaker 1: No, I mean, if they hold on to their lead
- 51:44Speaker 1: on Atlanta, which right now is three and a half
- 51:46Speaker 1: games for the second bye, the number two seed, and
- 51:50Speaker 1: they're only a game and a half back of Milwaukee
- 51:52Speaker 1: for the number one seed, but they don't have the
- 51:54Speaker 1: tiebreaker on either of those teams. But if they do
- 51:57Speaker 1: hold on to get a bye, then obviously there's more
- 52:01Speaker 1: rest time for some of the guys who are banged up,
- 52:03Speaker 1: more rest time for the starting rotation. And then you
- 52:05Speaker 1: see whether you make a move to bring DePaulo up
- 52:09Speaker 1: or whatever. And then if you have to change it,
- 52:10Speaker 1: they win that division series and get to the NLCS.
- 52:13Speaker 3: You can change it if you want to. So we've
- 52:16Speaker 3: seen teams do that. How long do you stick with
- 52:18Speaker 3: Kyle Tucker?
- 52:19Speaker 8: That's a real question.
- 52:20Speaker 3: Going into the playoffs. Lately, he's been pretty good. Last
- 52:23Speaker 3: couple of games, he's got a couple of hits.
- 52:24Speaker 4: Yeah, that's facing one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gotten his batting average up to, I think,
- 52:29Speaker 1: a robust.
- 52:29Speaker 3: 227.
- 52:31Speaker 1: But he's also made some spectacular catches in the outfield
- 52:34Speaker 1: this week, too. So maybe it's starting to click for him.
- 52:37Speaker 1: I'll tell you who it's clicking for is Tay Oscar.
- 52:39Speaker 3: Oh, boy. 37 years young, and he is blessed.
- 52:42Speaker 1: He's batted over 500 in the last week. He's been
- 52:46Speaker 1: tearing it up. Anyway, so we'll find out. And by
- 52:50Speaker 1: the way, Freddie Freeman is another guy.
- 52:51Speaker 3: Who's banged up. But they say absolutely not. He's not
- 52:53Speaker 3: going on the injured list.
- 52:54Speaker 1: He did not play last night.
- 52:57Speaker 3: They have a day off for travel today. to Florida.
- 52:59Speaker 1: He may not play tomorrow night against the Marlins, but
- 53:01Speaker 1: he probably will be back in action on Saturday.
- 53:04Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 53:05Speaker 1: That's what I meant about all of these roster moves,
- 53:06Speaker 1: which you can do moving guys up and down as
- 53:09Speaker 1: they draw closer to the postseason.
- 53:10Speaker 4: Do you miss the 40-man September rosters?
- 53:12Speaker 3: I do. I do.
- 53:14Speaker 8: It was always fun for me.
- 53:15Speaker 3: It was.
- 53:16Speaker 1: You only had it for the one month, but it's
- 53:18Speaker 1: still fun to see a lot of those guys appear.
- 53:20Speaker 1: I think one of the issues that came up with
- 53:23Speaker 1: that is teams that were trying to rest guys And
- 53:28Speaker 1: teams that were out of it, who were playing younger players,
- 53:32Speaker 1: were fresher, with nothing.
- 53:33Speaker 3: To lose, and were going in. And they were.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Stealing wins from teams that were in pennant fights and
- 53:39Speaker 1: playoff fights.
- 53:39Speaker 3: And so I think that all factored into it a
- 53:41Speaker 3: little bit.
- 53:42Speaker 4: So we'd rather watch the zombie Nats waltz their way
- 53:45Speaker 4: through another slog of a month of blowing saves?
- 53:49Speaker 6: Oh, boy.
- 53:50Speaker 3: It's been difficult for them.
- 53:51Speaker 2: All right.
- 53:52Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian when
- 53:54Speaker 1: we continue on 13 Under the Zone.
- 53:57Speaker 5: 45-yard line in New England. Fourth and one under center line.
- 54:01Speaker 5: Fakes the handoff. Throws a pass.
- 54:03Speaker 6: Caught. 40-yard line.
- 54:04Speaker 3: Breaking the tackle.
- 54:05Speaker 10: 35-30.
- 54:05Speaker 5: It's Jackson Smith and Jigman.
- 54:08Speaker 8: 15-10-5.
- 54:08Speaker 10: Touchdown!
- 54:10Speaker 3: Touchdown, Seattle!
- 54:12Speaker 11: 45-yard touch and run!
- 54:16Speaker 5: Third down five.
- 54:17Speaker 6: Patriots down by three.
- 54:20Speaker 5: 26 seconds to go. Shotgun snap to May.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Moved out of the pocket.
- 54:23Speaker 5: Throws a pass.
- 54:24Speaker 2: End zone.
- 54:25Speaker 5: Intercepted! In the end zone!
- 54:27Speaker 11: Was he inbounds? Intercepted by Jobe! Seattle has picked off May!
- 54:39Speaker 11: They've done it again!
- 54:42Speaker 3: The defense of Seattle.
- 54:43Speaker 11: Has done it again. Craig May has thrown his third interception.
- 54:50Speaker 5: In this quarter.
- 54:51Speaker 12: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 54:54Speaker 12: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster, Craig Way.
- 55:00Speaker 1: The great Kevin Harlan on Westwood won last night with
- 55:03Speaker 1: a call of those two big plays. Touchdown pass from
- 55:07Speaker 1: Drew Locke to Jackson Smith and Jigba of Rockwell, Texas.
- 55:12Speaker 1: for the touchdown, and then, of course, the game-saving interception
- 55:16Speaker 1: there in the end zone.
- 55:18Speaker 3: NFL season is underway.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Seahawks with the win over the Patriots last night, Rams
- 55:23Speaker 1: and 49ers tonight.
- 55:24Speaker 3: I think that's a Netflix telecast, isn't it?
- 55:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I hope they have it where.
- 55:29Speaker 3: I'm going to watch. Are you going somewhere specifically to watch?
- 55:32Speaker 4: I watched the first half at Pluckers with a friend
- 55:34Speaker 4: of mine.
- 55:35Speaker 3: Have you checked with Pluckers to make sure?
- 55:37Speaker 8: That's a good idea. I might have to.
- 55:39Speaker 3: I didn't realize it was on Netflix.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Knowing Pluckers as I know, I think they will probably
- 55:43Speaker 1: have it. But it might not be worth a check
- 55:45Speaker 1: on that. Hey, maybe you can text Harge. He's going
- 55:47Speaker 1: to be out there this afternoon.
- 55:48Speaker 3: Is that the location? I wonder if I'm going to
- 55:50Speaker 3: the same location as Harge.
- 55:51Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 55:51Speaker 3: Check with him and see on that.
- 55:53Speaker 1: In the meantime, let's hear more from Longwood's head coach,
- 55:55Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian, who was asked, you know, with both of
- 55:57Speaker 1: these teams nationally recruiting, are there recruiting implications for this game?
- 56:07Speaker 5: I mean, I think it was just a big state
- 56:09Speaker 5: with a lot of players. You know, I say it
- 56:11Speaker 5: all the time. I wish I could sign them all.
- 56:13Speaker 5: It doesn't work like that. It's probably the most here
- 56:17Speaker 5: in Florida are probably the most two recruited states in
- 56:21Speaker 5: the country. And I would probably say Georgia is a
- 56:24Speaker 5: close third and California is a close fourth. That's just
- 56:28Speaker 5: because of sheer numbers and the amount of players that
- 56:32Speaker 5: are here. And I mean, every week we play teams with,
- 56:36Speaker 5: from the state of Texas. Now, granted, Ohio State's recruiting
- 56:39Speaker 5: the really good ones. And so, you know, Ryan's done
- 56:42Speaker 5: a really good job of getting players from the state
- 56:44Speaker 5: and they've gone on to produce and play at a
- 56:46Speaker 5: high level. I don't know. That's probably really far down
- 56:50Speaker 5: on the totem pole for why I want to win
- 56:52Speaker 5: Saturday night, quite frankly. But I would imagine it's probably
- 56:56Speaker 5: an unintended consequence, right, if you win man, maybe a
- 57:00Speaker 5: few more of those guys are willing to stay home.
- 57:02Speaker 5: And if you don't, maybe a few more guys will
- 57:04Speaker 5: be willing to leave.
- 57:05Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 57:05Speaker 5: I haven't thought that much about it.
- 57:06Speaker 3: All right.
- 57:07Speaker 1: A question about Hiro Kanu, because we've heard quite a
- 57:09Speaker 1: bit about Hiro this week since he played at Ohio State.
- 57:13Speaker 1: We heard from him saying he's not going to make
- 57:15Speaker 1: the game bigger than it's supposed to be, and it's
- 57:17Speaker 1: going to be more of a businesslike approach. So it
- 57:19Speaker 1: was our friend Kirk Bowles from the Houston Chronicle who asked, Sark,
- 57:24Speaker 1: what has Condu brought to his program?
- 57:26Speaker 5: Hero's been tremendous. You know, he definitely came in with
- 57:30Speaker 5: a worker's mentality. He definitely came in with this idea
- 57:34Speaker 5: that I'm going to buy into the culture here at Texas.
- 57:38Speaker 5: But at the same token, he contributed to that culture,
- 57:42Speaker 5: and I think he's improved it. And I think that
- 57:44Speaker 5: culture in the D-line room is really a byproduct of
- 57:47Speaker 5: his leadership. But, man, he's a fun-loving guy. His interaction
- 57:52Speaker 5: with all of the student-athletes on our campus, not just
- 57:54Speaker 5: football players. I mean, you go to a soccer game,
- 57:58Speaker 5: Hero might be sitting in the stands. You go to
- 57:59Speaker 5: a volleyball match, Hero might be sitting in the stands.
- 58:01Speaker 5: I mean, he's a very active on-campus guy. I think
- 58:04Speaker 5: he enjoys his experience here. But just for us in particular,
- 58:08Speaker 5: he's a joy to have, and we're lucky to have him.
- 58:10Speaker 5: He's a very good player.
- 58:11Speaker 3: Okay, next.
- 58:13Speaker 1: He was asked about what more can he, as a
- 58:16Speaker 1: play caller and a veteran of these big games, add
- 58:20Speaker 1: to Arch Manning's kit, so to speak, given his experience
- 58:26Speaker 1: in this?
- 58:27Speaker 5: Well, I think the biggest thing that I can help with,
- 58:31Speaker 5: I don't know if there's much to add, you know,
- 58:33Speaker 5: but I think it's knowing who he is, knowing the personality,
- 58:37Speaker 5: knowing the personality in the moment, on it in the
- 58:40Speaker 5: past to good plays. to positive drives, how he's responded
- 58:44Speaker 5: to tough plays, you know, maybe an interception or to
- 58:47Speaker 5: a negative drive, and then what button to push to
- 58:50Speaker 5: get him back refocused on track playing the way that
- 58:53Speaker 5: he's capable of playing. And I think that's a process
- 58:56Speaker 5: that you learn over time, right? And that's really getting
- 58:59Speaker 5: to know somebody, being in the trenches with them. And so, like,
- 59:04Speaker 5: I really loved the response he had last week, right,
- 59:07Speaker 5: after the interception at the end of the first half.
- 59:10Speaker 5: the response he had coming out in the third quarter
- 59:12Speaker 5: and the way he played i think was indicative of
- 59:15Speaker 5: his maturity right and i think that's credit to coach
- 59:18Speaker 5: milway coach bamonte all parties involved of of moving on
- 59:22Speaker 5: from that where i think in the past that may
- 59:24Speaker 5: have taken a little longer i think we're a lot
- 59:26Speaker 5: quicker to kind of right the ship and get him
- 59:29Speaker 5: back going in a direction where he's playing in a
- 59:31Speaker 5: really positive style and confidently and letting it rip.
- 59:36Speaker 1: And this is always a pretty entertaining question.
- 59:40Speaker 3: Based on just what he saw on.
- 59:43Speaker 1: Video from Ohio State week one based on what Ohio
- 59:46Speaker 1: State saw on video from Texas week one what can
- 59:49Speaker 1: he expect any similarities with what he saw in the
- 59:53Speaker 1: Buckeyes win over Ball State I.
- 59:55Speaker 5: Promise you what they ran last week against Ball State
- 59:57Speaker 5: we're not going to get so let's start with that
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: right you know Matt Patricia's been doing this a long
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: time Arthur Smith's been doing this a long time It's
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: like the NFL preseason, right? What guys run in the
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: preseason is not what they're running in week one, two,
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: and three of the regular season in the NFL. So
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: I think most notably, you go back and you study
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: the tape from last season. You go back and watch
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: the tape from years past. And then you try to
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: make some educated guesstimations of what you might get. And
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: then you've got to be willing and ready to adjust
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: in real time in game to what they're actually doing.
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: And so you try to devise a plan that your
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: players are confident in that can attack multiple fronts and
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: multiple coverages, but at the same time, The players have
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: confidence when they do get certain coverages or when they
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: do get certain fronts. Like these are the premier looks.
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: This is what we should be looking for. And this
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: is an opportunity for us to create a really positive play.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Sar coming up next hour. By
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: the way, baseball update. Jock Peterson, a two-run homer right after.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Jake mentioned that Gilbert was in the rocking chair.
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: That's all it takes sometimes, a bloop and a blast.
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: It was like a 50-mile-an-hour single up the middle from
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: Nicky Lopez, and then Gilbert knew right away that that
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: ball was not coming back.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Yeah, two-run homer for Peterson Rangers, up 2-0 on Seattle,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: top of the third again.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: The Astros have already won today.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Cam Smith homer in the top of the ninth, and
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: the Astros beat the Phillies by a score of 2-1.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: All right, coming up, we'll be back to wrap up
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: our number two here on 13 Under the Zones. Third
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: and final hour of the program here on Sports Radio
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: AM 13 under the zone.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: Here with you for another hour of the program. Craig
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: Wade with you.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Going to be joined here shortly by Cedric Olin, the
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Austin American statesman. He'll be with us here in just
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: a few minutes. The update on the Major League Baseball scene.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Rangers still lead the Mariners 2-0 as Texas bats in
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: the top of the fourth in Seattle in that series finale.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: Astros have already won today.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Getting a ninth-inning home run from Cameron Smith to win
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: over Philadelphia by a score of 2-1.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: Okay, I would say this.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: In boxing parlance, whenever you have a reigning champion getting
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: ready to defend his title or have his next bout,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: whether it was Michael Buffer or anybody else, they would
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: say something like, The reigning heavyweight champion of the world,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: Lennox Lewis or whoever. So in this case, it is
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: only right to say the reigning Texas sports writer of
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: the year as recognized by the National Sports Media Association,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Cedric Golden of the Austin American Statesman who joins us now.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: I figured you'd like that because you've always been a
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: big boxing aficionado.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: How are you doing?
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Man, I'm great.
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: I love the boxing analogy. I'm reigning and defending. I
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: don't know how that equates. There are people in this
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: state that can write circles around me, but I'll take
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: the love.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Thanks, my friend.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know this, and I was kidding, because
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: if you've won the title, you're not allowed to defend it.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: You can't.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: They used to do that to where you could win
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: it in consecutive years, and I think Vern Lundquist won
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Texas SportsCast for like nine straight years one time back
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: in the 70s to 80s. So then they changed this
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: a few years ago. And so they said, you can
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: win one, and then you can't win the next year,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: but you're eligible the following year.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: That I didn't know. Yeah. That I didn't know.
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: Kirk Bowles, I thought Kirk Bowles won it like. I
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: think it was like Kirk Bowles and Kevin Sherrington of
- 1:04:06Speaker 6: the Dallas Morning News just flip-flopped every other year. So
- 1:04:11Speaker 6: maybe that explains it. I didn't know that. I was
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: gearing up for a repeat. I guess I'll get nothing
- 1:04:17Speaker 6: and like it.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: You get to be like at the Oscars, you know,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: and so when you won one year, you get to present.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: I presented, yes. Best supporting actor there.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Best actor, yes.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: And you got a chance to enjoy my hometown of Greensboro, right?
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: Good restaurant recommendations. Bev and I had a blast. Beautiful
- 1:04:37Speaker 6: out there. Reminds me of East Texas, Craig. It really does.
- 1:04:41Speaker 6: A lot of pine trees. It was really pretty. Yeah,
- 1:04:45Speaker 6: we enjoyed it. And we may go back next year,
- 1:04:48Speaker 6: even though I'm not going to be winning it again.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: It's a great clinic to go to.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: And, you know, you get with like-minded individuals and you're
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: sharing ideas and all those kinds of things.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: It's really cool. Yeah, I got to hang out with
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Chuck Cooperstein.
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: The esteemed voice of the Dallas Mavericks. Yeah, he was
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: out there.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: There are very few people that are like of the
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: same mind as Chuck is, though. I mean, you know,
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: he's kind of out there, you know.
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: He's kind of out there. He loves his Gators. He
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: loves his Florida Gators. And I remember when, Craig, I
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: don't even know if you know this. We were in
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: the press box in Gainesville last year, the writers, and
- 1:05:26Speaker 6: I'm sitting there going, yeah, I'm with Kurt Bowles, and
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: I'm like, These guys didn't show up.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Texas didn't show up.
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: And I look up and I see this big guy
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: in a Gators jersey walking through with a credential.
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: He got shot.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: And I go, Cooperstein, why are you in here?
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: You're obviously not working in that Gators gear.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: He came all the way to Gainesville.
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: I go, you came out here to Gainesville knowing full
- 1:05:52Speaker 6: well that Florida was probably going to suffer a beatdown.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: And then Texas didn't show up.
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: It kind of worked out for him, but I was like, man,
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: that guy's got money to burn.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: Bussman's holiday, right? You know, before he got really going
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: with the Mavericks there. And all that can mean, Sid,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: is what are the odds we'll see him in Austin
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: on October 17th, right?
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, it depends.
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: Yeah, because the Mavericks don't start until... He's going to
- 1:06:18Speaker 6: be in the press box. Yeah.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: He's coming.
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: He'll be here.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: He's coming. You know he is. He'll be there.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: No doubt about it.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: Since Ron was subject of the log horns, I wanted
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: to get your overall take, not only on what you
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: saw last week, but the run-up to this matchup. This
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: is why I wanted you to be on this week
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: to talk about this matchup because you were present for
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: those other big matchups with the Ohio State Buckeyes. So
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: your thoughts on what you've seen so far, your overall
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: take in this matchup with the Ohio State.
- 1:06:47Speaker 6: I want to tell you, I think Sarkeesian's quietly confident,
- 1:06:50Speaker 6: very confident. The good thing about it, Craig, is they
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: played really well in most areas.
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: But they did just a little.
- 1:07:00Speaker 6: Bit of things that he can still point to in
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: film study in good, bad, and ugly. You know, Arch
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: throws that interception. They had a dozen or so runs.
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: They went for two yards or less. And so those
- 1:07:14Speaker 6: are the kind of things you can go, excuse me,
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: you didn't play perfectly, but you still scored 59 points.
- 1:07:22Speaker 6: They gave up 108 yards in the second quarter, not
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: their standard. So those are the kind of things you
- 1:07:29Speaker 6: can point to. They're going to be hungry enough playing
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: Ohio State, but they're not coming in fat and happy.
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: And so I think Sarkeesian and Muschamp can seize upon
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: that with the team leadership to let them know, hey,
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: And the team right now, I think you'll agree with me, Craig,
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: this is not the team that lost 14-7. This is
- 1:07:51Speaker 6: a much more talented club on both sides of the ball.
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: I'm thinking we might be in for a real treat,
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: but I think Texas is miles better than the team
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: that went to Columbus, and it starts with 16.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: 16's on another level right now.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: I mean, you think about last year with Arch, and
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: like I said, I always remember that first play, him
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: dirting the ball there, you know, trying to get it
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: to Wingo, and then, you know.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: Just struggled. But the offensive line struggled, to be fair.
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: There were four new ones last year.
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: This offensive line looks a lot more fit, confident, and
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: competent on the line from what we've seen so far.
- 1:08:28Speaker 6: You know, the old offensive line coach, what was his name?
- 1:08:32Speaker 6: I'm drawing a blank. Back in the day.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. What's his name?
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: It'll come to me.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: The old offensive line. Matt, Coach McCorder.
- 1:08:46Speaker 6: Coach McCorder always wanted freakish depth up front, and they
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: would sub out four out and four in. This current
- 1:08:55Speaker 6: crew's not to that point, but they've got some guys
- 1:08:58Speaker 6: that can come in. Andre Kojo had some nice reps.
- 1:09:04Speaker 6: Dylan Sikorski might be out playing Brandon Baker right now.
- 1:09:08Speaker 6: So they've got guys. And Cole Hudson's not even a
- 1:09:11Speaker 6: factor yet.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: And he might be back.
- 1:09:14Speaker 6: They've got some guys that have gotten them that kind
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: of depth that they're going to need. because it's such
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: a physical game. And I'm encouraged by Arch. One sack,
- 1:09:25Speaker 6: they kept him pretty clean. And he didn't have to
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: run at all. He's going to run this weekend. And
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: it's not going to be running for his life. That's
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: the one thing they didn't show was Arch Manning on
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: design runs. I guarantee you Arch Manning's going to run
- 1:09:43Speaker 6: against a defense that lost a ton of NFL talent.
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: Caleb Downs no longer in the mix. Sonny Stiles no
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: longer in the mix. But Jack Sawyer, I think he
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: might be gone. So those guys are no longer in
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: the mix. And I think that Arch is going to
- 1:10:00Speaker 6: be a problem, not just with his arm but with
- 1:10:03Speaker 6: his legs.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: Do you see this, as many do, that the old
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: thing about trench warfare and however the offensive line and
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: defensive lines of both sides? Because I know that one
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: of the concerns that I've heard coming out of Columbus
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: is– their offensive line against the Texas defense. And you
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: notice from Ryan Day's news conference, there were specific targeted
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: questions about certain offensive linemen for Ohio State. Do you
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: see that as being one of the big keys in
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: this one?
- 1:10:30Speaker 6: It always is. It always is. You're only as good
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: as the fat guys up front. Those big boys, if
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: those big boys are winning, then the athletes, and some
- 1:10:40Speaker 6: coaches refer to the non-linemen as athletes. the Raheem Biles
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: is those kinds of guys. Colin Simmons is elite athlete,
- 1:10:51Speaker 6: even though he's up front, those guys can, can, can,
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: can really impact the game. I I'm interested to see
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: what these corners, you know, the Kobe blacks, Grayson Littleton,
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: I'm kind of interested to see what those, how those
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: guys hold up against these really good, uh, these really, really,
- 1:11:09Speaker 6: really good receivers because Greg, if you look at it, uh,
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: You know, Brad Jackson and Bo Sparks had a nice
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: little rhythm going. Quick drops, getting the ball out, not
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: allowing Colin Simmons to impact the game at first because
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: he was taking two-step drops. And the receivers were getting
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: open and they were matriculating it down the field. I
- 1:11:33Speaker 6: expect Ohio State watched that tape and they're going to
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: try and figure out how to do something similar, even
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: though Julian Sane doesn't move as well as a Brad Jackson.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: Senator Golden of the Austin American Statesman with us during
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: this portion of the program. Let me get your thoughts.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: I'm just real excited. Of course, I read your work,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: you know, daily and every time it's out in the Statesman.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: But I want to get your thoughts on the overall
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: national college football scene. I thought it was interesting how
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Sark said it, and he said it on Long Word
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: Weekly when we had Matt Brown on with us last night.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: We'll hear it again when he said, you know, isn't
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: it nice to have a game and we're not talking
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: about TROs and lawsuits and all that other kind of stuff.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Does this thing calm down a little bit right now since,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: as I called it, LSU versus the SEC was the
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Soviets and the Cuban Missile Crisis and they blinked and
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: they backed down a little bit here?
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: I hope so, brother.
- 1:12:34Speaker 12: I do.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: And we talked to Sark this afternoon and he said
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: the same thing.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: It's good to be talking about a great game.
- 1:12:43Speaker 6: The thing is, and we've talked about it on Kirk
- 1:12:47Speaker 6: and I on our own Second Thought podcast, which dropped today.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: It's on YouTube.
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: Lane Kiffin scores 51 points, blows out Dabo Sweeney, but
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: it seems like it's not enough. He's still got to
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: be reaching for that attention. It's like it's all about him. Now,
- 1:13:09Speaker 6: if 16 ADs and presidents voted to levy harsh penalties,
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: if you're trying to sign pros onto your roster, then
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: just leave it alone. You even had to get his
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: digs in at halftime. How good would we have been
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: with the pros? Okay, that guy got cut by the
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: Cleveland Browns. How good could he be? I mean, how
- 1:13:30Speaker 6: good could he be? And so for me, I'm glad
- 1:13:34Speaker 6: that we're back talking about football. I'm glad we're talking
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: about Steve Sarkeesian and Ryan Day and Julian Sane and
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: Arch Manning and Jeremiah and Coleman Wingo, those are the
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: stars that people are paying to see.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: 105,000 people aren't going to show up.
- 1:13:55Speaker 6: To listen to you muse about the fact that the
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: SEC put BTA basically on you for talking too much.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: Leave it be.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Leave it alone.
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: Isn't it good enough to be what Dabo Sweeney said
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: might be the best team in the country? Because Kurt
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: Bowles moved him from 11 in his poll all the
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: way up to number one.
- 1:14:18Speaker 9: Wow.
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: So let's make it about the game that other stuff
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: will take care of itself.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: These guys are making money.
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: You go to a pro camp, you sign a contract,
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: and you should know in your heart that you're no
- 1:14:30Speaker 6: longer a college athlete.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: That should be the end of it. But guess what, Craig?
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: It won't be.
- 1:14:35Speaker 9: No.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: Because there's a judge somewhere.
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: That lives down the street from the coach that's willing
- 1:14:41Speaker 6: to bang his or her gavel and do a TRO,
- 1:14:47Speaker 6: and we're right back where we started. It's a colossal
- 1:14:51Speaker 6: guano show.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: It is. Yeah, no doubt about it. Okay, you mentioned
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: Kirk moving LSU up to number one. Who do you
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: think is the number one team? And will the winner
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: of this Saturday's game have a rightful claim to be
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: number one?
- 1:15:06Speaker 6: I think it might be LSU, but I think the
- 1:15:09Speaker 6: winner of this game, this is a mega marquee matchup.
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: Like your mentor, Bill Mercer, would say, this is a
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: main event in any wrestling arena in America. I think
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: the winner of this game, well, should have a rightful
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: claim to number one because this is elite versus elite,
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: and Heisman, candidates against Heisman candidates, Belitnikov versus Belitnikov, you
- 1:15:38Speaker 6: name it, there is star power at every position on
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: this field, and whoever wins with everybody watching will be
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: my pick for the number one team in the country.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Senator Golden with us for a couple more minutes. Jump
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: to the NFL. Who's the best team in the NFL?
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: I'm picking the two teams I think are going to
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: end up in the Super Bowl are the Los Angeles Rams.
- 1:16:01Speaker 6: If Matt Stafford doesn't wake up, and realize that he's old.
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: If Matt Stafford can do what he did last year,
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: and if they can get 75% of what we used
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: to get from Aaron Donald, and we know that Miles
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: Garrett is in his prime, I believe that the Rams
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: are going to win the Super Bowl. And I think
- 1:16:20Speaker 6: the Ravens have been knocking on that door. Either the
- 1:16:24Speaker 6: Ravens or the Bills in the AFC have been knocking
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: on that door. How bad was Drake May last night?
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: That was bad, man. That was bad. But I think
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: it's Rams-Ravens in the Super Bowl. And I'm leaning toward
- 1:16:37Speaker 6: the Rams. They have star power. They have pro bowlers.
- 1:16:43Speaker 6: And they probably should have been there. They probably should
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: have won it by now. But if Stafford can stay healthy,
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: I think the Rams are the most complete team in
- 1:16:54Speaker 6: the league.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: How will the Cowboys do?
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: They'll make the playoffs. They'll make the playoffs.
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: I think that Harbaugh is going to light a fire
- 1:17:03Speaker 6: under the Giants. So the NFC East kind of got sexy.
- 1:17:06Speaker 6: It got kind of sexy. I think Sirianni's kind of nuts.
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: But I'm probably leaning toward the Eagles to still win
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: the division. And I don't think the Giants are talented
- 1:17:17Speaker 6: enough to make the playoffs, but they're going to win
- 1:17:20Speaker 6: more games.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: Jaden Daniels stays healthy.
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: Dak Prescott has played well. And CeeDee Lamb, four games.
- 1:17:29Speaker 6: What he's done, C.D. Lamb had a down year last year.
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: And if he had just been himself with what George
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: Pickens had done, Cowboys probably would have won a playoff game.
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: But I'm thinking they make the playoffs. They feel like
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: an 11-6 or a 10-7.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: How good will the Texans be?
- 1:17:50Speaker 6: It's an all-time great defense, but they don't have a quarterback.
- 1:17:53Speaker 6: I don't think C.J. Stroud's the guy.
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: He's not the answer?
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: I mean, they call it, yeah, he's not.
- 1:17:57Speaker 6: They call him, you know, we've heard of the sophomore jinx.
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: He just had a junior jinx. So what's going on
- 1:18:04Speaker 6: with that? He had a sophomore and a junior jinx,
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: and now the senior jinx is coming up. He tried
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: to give that game to the Steelers last year. I
- 1:18:12Speaker 6: just don't know that he's the guy. I think he
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: had one good year, and they are wasting an all-time
- 1:18:19Speaker 6: great defense, and they're going to have to give him
- 1:18:20Speaker 6: some money, Craig, because they're not, They're never going to
- 1:18:24Speaker 6: be in the position where they're going to be able
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: to take an arch or a sand. They're going to
- 1:18:28Speaker 6: always be in the mix for that division. So they're
- 1:18:32Speaker 6: kind of caught between a rock and a hard place.
- 1:18:34Speaker 6: I do not think he can lead them to special places.
- 1:18:37Speaker 6: I am not a believer in C.J.
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: Stroud.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: One final question.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: The chair you're sitting in right now was the chair
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: you were sitting in when Sark did his Zoom availability
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: this morning. Have you not moved from that chair? before, during,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: or after the time with Sark?
- 1:18:54Speaker 6: So you did watch the zoom. So you will notice
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: that the shirt is different.
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: That is true. You did change your shirt.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I did change my shirt. I, uh, I did go,
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: I go, I've written two columns. I got to write
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: one more.
- 1:19:04Speaker 6: Uh, I went to the kitchen to, um, I went
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: to the kitchen to do to get some grapes and
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: a protein shake.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: I did do that.
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: But I've written two columns. I got to write one more.
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: I did a newsletter and I did a podcast today.
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: And so, yeah, Thursday is a production day for me
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: because I don't want to be doing much of anything
- 1:19:26Speaker 6: on Friday.
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: I'm with you.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: And I appreciate being the exclamation point on a very
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: active day for you. Hey, thanks, and I'll see you
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: in the press box. I haven't been over in the
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: writer's box yet. I've only been over where we broadcast from,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: but I'll come around over to the east side.
- 1:19:43Speaker 6: So you've been hanging out in Beverly Hills, and you
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: haven't visited us in Watts yet. Come visit us in Watts.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: Watts is fine.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: Have you seen where we work from? It ain't no
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: Bev Hills.
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: I heard that it's a smaller space for you guys.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: It's a different space. Let me put it to you
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: that way. It's a different space. Yeah, come see us.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: It's fine. You know what?
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: I didn't take the tour with Bianco, but we looked over,
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: you know, when I got in there and I looked
- 1:20:12Speaker 6: and I sat down and got the view of the field.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: Yeah, there's worse places.
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: It's never going to be as good as where we
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: used to be, Craig. Right. But we'll take it. We'll
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: take it. It sure beats working for a living.
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: And I accepted that a long time ago. And I
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: will tell you, I have broadcast from more places. difficult
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: places you can identify with this detroit again against italy
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: on thanksgiving night 1990 on the press box and on
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: top of the press box in royce city yeah oh
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: wow there's other places there's a you've you've worked in
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: some in some uh rather cozy confines on the high
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: school beat back in the day when you were tearing
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: it up in.
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: East texas absolutely and i cover the cowboys commanders which
- 1:20:52Speaker 6: they were the redskins back then uh when we remember
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: that was the tom herman era That's right.
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: It was raining.
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: It was raining inside the press box. I'll never forget it.
- 1:21:02Speaker 6: It was raining inside the press box. I was covering
- 1:21:05Speaker 6: up my my MacBook like it was a newborn baby.
- 1:21:07Speaker 6: That's how concerned I was. So we've worked in a
- 1:21:10Speaker 6: lot worse circumstances. We got it better than ninety nine
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: point nine percent of the people doing this.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: I agree completely. I appreciate it, my friend. Thanks for
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: doing it. And I'll see.
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: You on Saturday. Okay, brother.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: Take care.
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: All right, that's Cedric.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: Golden, the award-winning columnist from the Austin American-Statesman and the
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: current Texas Sports Writer of the Year as recognized by
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: the National Sports Media Association. Coming up, a special segment,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: a little preview of Longhorn Weekly with Sark, which is
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: coming up at 6 o'clock tonight.
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: And our special guest is Matt Brown.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: We'll have a little preview of that coming up next
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: here on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: Gets the toss to the left side.
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: Turns inside.
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: A 15-10 foul.
- 1:21:54Speaker 7: Touchdown, Texas.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: Raleigh Brown picked up two huge blocks.
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: He turned that play in the alley. First touchdown of
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: the whole.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: We're back.
- 1:22:08Speaker 12: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 1:22:11Speaker 12: and voice of the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: That highlight call you heard of Raleigh Brown's touchdown.
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: That he scored.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Was how we let off a segment last night. Now, again,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Longhorn Weekly, you'll be able to hear it about an
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: hour and a half from now in its entirety. Longhorn
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Weekly with Coach Sark. And Matt Brown sat down. It
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: was a great visit. You'll be quite entertained, and you'll
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: learn quite a few things, too, if you're able to
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: tune in for that. You can hear it right here
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: on 13 Under the Zone. Over the air, obviously, you
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: can listen online at am13underthezone. com. You can listen on the
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: IR radio apps. It's on the Texas Longhorns app. So, yeah,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: there's multiple ways to listen to that program coming up
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: at 6 o'clock. But Mac had been with us already
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: a couple of days. He was with us virtually the
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: entire show. So Mac had already been with us, I think,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: three or four segments prior to this. And we were
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: bumping back with that highlight of Raleigh Brown. So here's
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: the segment with Sark and Mac Brown and me from
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: last night. And you'll hear them at first coming out
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: of that highlight on me asking Sark about it. And
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: then we'll get into some other conversations. You'll hear this.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: This is from Longhorn Weekly from last night. Raleigh Brown
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: getting a couple of touchdowns. Like you said, the importance
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: of what was going on, the sharing with the offense.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: And both Hollywood and Raleigh made their impact throughout the game.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: Yeah, they really did.
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: You know, I think right off the rip, the very
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: first play, Hollywood really well blocked. And you talk about
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: a selfless play. Talk about Ryan Wingo, seven catches, 120 yards.
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: He goes and cracks a safety, and that gets Hollywood
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: one-on-one with the corner, 40 yards, and away we go.
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: But as the game went on, Hollywood catches a touchdown
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: out of the backfield. Raleigh has a couple touchdown runs.
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: And so I just think incorporating those two guys, what
- 1:24:06Speaker 5: does that balance look like for us, you know, to
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: where we're actually playing with a real, true two-headed monster?
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: Something I know, Coach, you had at Carolina there for
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: a couple years where Those two guys were special together.
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: And what does that look like? What does that feel like?
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: What's the right balance of having those two guys working
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: together is good for us. And we need it. You know,
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: we went for a long time where we kind of
- 1:24:28Speaker 5: had a stable of these guys. We took a little
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: bit of a step back. And so to get that
- 1:24:31Speaker 5: room back in order is really good for us.
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: When you see B.
- 1:24:34Speaker 10: John Robinson play, it's really hard to find him again.
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: Well, let me tell you something. We saw him, you know,
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: he's at the game Saturday. And he's got this tank
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: top on. And, you know, so I see him all pregame,
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: and he's just all jacked up. And so I'm talking
- 1:24:49Speaker 5: to L'Oreal, and we're talking. She goes, Bichon's a man.
- 1:24:52Speaker 5: And I said, I know, honey.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: He's a man.
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: We miss him. We weren't very good around him, and
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: he still made it work. He was making chicken soup
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: out of you-know-what.
- 1:25:03Speaker 10: He made a lot of those guys look better than
- 1:25:04Speaker 10: they were.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: For sure.
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: No doubt. Mac, you brought up a point.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: I want to get your thoughts, and obviously, Sark will
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: weigh in on this as well, about the state of
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: the game and playing these big non-conference opponents.
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: And some teams have shied away from it.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: And it was a great point that Texas went up
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: and played Ohio State last year and chose to play
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: that game instead of playing, like our old friend, the
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball head coach, Vic Schaefer, would say, three-name
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: directional state university. You don't play that kind of thing. And,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: you know, there's the slings and arrows of it. And
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: I know you've got concerns about where those types of
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: matchups might be going forward.
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I love listening to Steve. There's philosophy.
- 1:25:53Speaker 10: We're so much alike and on the same page in
- 1:25:55Speaker 10: so many ways. We've got to keep those games alive.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25:59Speaker 10: And it's so simple and it's so easy. But we've
- 1:26:02Speaker 10: got to figure out who our boss is. We've got
- 1:26:05Speaker 10: to get everybody in a room and say, scheduling is
- 1:26:08Speaker 10: important but we can't keep playing each other if it's
- 1:26:11Speaker 10: going to keep us out of the playoffs because they're
- 1:26:13Speaker 10: going to determine what kind of season you have based
- 1:26:15Speaker 10: on whether you get in the playoffs or not that's
- 1:26:17Speaker 10: right that's coming whether we like it or not so
- 1:26:20Speaker 10: we need to look at this next step of what
- 1:26:23Speaker 10: we do for the number of teams in the playoffs
- 1:26:26Speaker 10: really important how you earn your right to get there
- 1:26:29Speaker 10: is really important but how many people are excited about
- 1:26:32Speaker 10: this game on saturday that we won't have in three
- 1:26:35Speaker 10: four years Everybody in college football is focused on this game.
- 1:26:40Speaker 10: College game day is here.
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: Everybody.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: I'll tell you this.
- 1:26:43Speaker 5: I think this game is saving this season of college
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: football because for the last how many months, up until
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: last Saturday, what were we hearing about? Lawsuits, court cases,
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: NFL players, TROs. Finally, we have a week of it's
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: about a game. This week is about a game, and
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: it's about a game amongst two really good teams, two
- 1:27:09Speaker 5: really good programs that have historically been good, that have
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: withstood the test of time, that happen to be really
- 1:27:14Speaker 5: good again this year. College football needs this game, and
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: they need more games like this.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: And I agree with you.
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: Wholeheartedly, Coach.
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: And I can tell you, the guys we have in
- 1:27:23Speaker 5: our locker room and the guys in Ohio State's locker room,
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: they want to play in these games too. They didn't
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: come to Texas. They didn't go to Ohio State to
- 1:27:30Speaker 5: play all the directional schools. They came to play in
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: games like this and then ultimately in their conference and
- 1:27:36Speaker 5: then to get into the playoffs and do those things.
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: And so we can't lose sight of that. And not
- 1:27:40Speaker 5: to mention the 105,000 people that are going to be
- 1:27:43Speaker 5: in DKR Saturday night and upwards of 80,000 season ticket holders,
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: they're buying season tickets to come watch these games, right?
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: And that's to take nothing away from last week or
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: a future game. But this is part of the reason
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: they're buying these season tickets. This is part of the
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: reason why Season tickets went up 9% this year because
- 1:28:02Speaker 5: of games like this and what it does for revenue,
- 1:28:05Speaker 5: what it does for a university, what it does for
- 1:28:07Speaker 5: the revenue of the city of Austin, the fan bases.
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: This is what it's about, what it does for college
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: football and the talking heads. They finally get to talk
- 1:28:15Speaker 5: about a game of football that's going to be full
- 1:28:18Speaker 5: of NFL players, highly touted caliber players, potential draft picks,
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: potential drafts. national championship contending teams that's what they want
- 1:28:27Speaker 5: to talk about too they don't want to talk about
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: court cases and tro's and every other thing that's going on.
- 1:28:32Speaker 10: Colt mccoy talked to your team the other day he
- 1:28:34Speaker 10: probably mentioned being at the national championship game or this
- 1:28:38Speaker 10: game with uh ohio state or an ou game yeah
- 1:28:42Speaker 10: they want to play in the big games and that's
- 1:28:44Speaker 10: what they talk about that's right that's what they remember
- 1:28:46Speaker 10: you remember the third play in this game and and
- 1:28:49Speaker 10: they they go back and remember it but uh to
- 1:28:51Speaker 10: me and you and i've talked about this there's There's
- 1:28:54Speaker 10: 80% of the things we could fix right now to
- 1:28:56Speaker 10: make college coaches and players and fans and boosters.
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: Life's better.
- 1:29:01Speaker 10: 80% if we just go fix it. Then there's media
- 1:29:05Speaker 10: rights and then there's realignment. Maybe that's going to take
- 1:29:08Speaker 10: a while to figure out. And maybe those need lawsuits.
- 1:29:11Speaker 10: This other stuff's easy. It's easy to fix the playoff.
- 1:29:15Speaker 8: Easy.
- 1:29:15Speaker 10: It's easy to fix the scheduling. Why don't we just
- 1:29:19Speaker 10: fix it? If we just fix it. And get it
- 1:29:23Speaker 10: done now.
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: It's so easy.
- 1:29:24Speaker 10: And then our life's better. And then we can go
- 1:29:26Speaker 10: worry about the other things. Worry about realignment. Let the
- 1:29:30Speaker 10: guys that need to worry about that worry about it.
- 1:29:32Speaker 10: But let the football guys decide transfer portal, NIL. Let's
- 1:29:37Speaker 10: get some sense back into this thing. And let's do
- 1:29:39Speaker 10: it now.
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: You did some fine work for ESPN. The news came
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: down yesterday that the college football playoff committee has open
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: that 30-day exclusive negotiating window for ESPN. Most folks feel
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: that's the next step if that goes on to seeing
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: this thing double in size and.
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: Go to 2014. What are your thoughts on that?
- 1:30:03Speaker 10: I think we need to figure out who we are
- 1:30:05Speaker 10: and what we're doing, what the schedule is going to
- 1:30:08Speaker 10: look like during the season. When do we start? How
- 1:30:10Speaker 10: many buys do we have? Are we going to have
- 1:30:12Speaker 10: a championship game? Because that's really cool. It's really important.
- 1:30:15Speaker 10: It brings a lot of money.
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: But how many times can they play?
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:30:19Speaker 10: Steve had a championship game two years ago. It was
- 1:30:22Speaker 10: going to be January 20th. People don't realize those kids
- 1:30:26Speaker 10: lost their Christmas. They lost their New Year. They lost
- 1:30:30Speaker 10: the academic part of the last year because they were
- 1:30:33Speaker 10: fighting to stay alive in playoffs. They lost January. They
- 1:30:37Speaker 10: lost the start of the next semester. Steve didn't even
- 1:30:40Speaker 10: get to see the newcomers. You tell these kids, we
- 1:30:43Speaker 10: love you, man. We can't wait to get you here.
- 1:30:45Speaker 10: I want to greet you. I want to hug you. Uh, we're,
- 1:30:47Speaker 10: we're practicing and we're playing. Oh, by the way, there's
- 1:30:50Speaker 10: snow and you can't come. So, uh, somebody finds your
- 1:30:52Speaker 10: room for you. Look, have them tell you where the
- 1:30:54Speaker 10: library is. Tell them where to eat. We'll see you
- 1:30:57Speaker 10: in a few weeks.
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: That's not healthy.
- 1:30:59Speaker 10: Yeah, that's not good. So let, let's get a plan.
- 1:31:02Speaker 10: And instead of making conscious decisions about NIL transfer portal, um,
- 1:31:10Speaker 10: without knowing the consequences, let's think about the consequences of 16.
- 1:31:16Speaker 10: Let's think about the consequences of 24. And let's think
- 1:31:19Speaker 10: about the consequences of scheduling. And let's figure out what
- 1:31:23Speaker 10: 24 means. Who are those 24? Urban Meyer was on
- 1:31:29Speaker 10: our podcast the other day, and he said, Texas should
- 1:31:33Speaker 10: have been in the playoffs last year. If they hadn't
- 1:31:36Speaker 10: played Ohio State, they would have been If we're sitting there,
- 1:31:38Speaker 10: and I don't know if I said that earlier, but
- 1:31:39Speaker 10: if we're sitting there, and I've said this many times,
- 1:31:43Speaker 10: I love Tulane.
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: I coached there.
- 1:31:44Speaker 10: They shouldn't have played Ole Miss in a rematch. That
- 1:31:49Speaker 10: should have been Notre Dame and Oxford.
- 1:31:50Speaker 3: What a great.
- 1:31:51Speaker 10: Thrill for all of us to watch. Texas should have
- 1:31:54Speaker 10: been in Oregon. What a great game that would have
- 1:31:56Speaker 10: been instead of James Madison. I mean, it's too simple.
- 1:32:00Speaker 10: Have the best 12 teams. And let's just move on
- 1:32:04Speaker 10: and move forward with it. And I think that's just
- 1:32:07Speaker 10: something we've all got to do.
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: I'd say, too, on that, it's one thing to stress
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: on the student athletes. I'd say to stress on the fans.
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: You know, two years ago, two years ago, when we
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: played in the SEC championship game in Atlanta, then we
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: came home and we had the home playoff game against Clemson.
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: Then we went back to Atlanta to play Arizona State.
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: And then we went to Dallas, right? And then if
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: we win in Dallas, where was the national title that year?
- 1:32:37Speaker 5: Wasn't it back in Atlanta? I think it was back
- 1:32:41Speaker 5: in Atlanta.
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it was in Atlanta.
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: So just think about from.
- 1:32:44Speaker 5: A fan's perspective, right, of that amount of travel during
- 1:32:48Speaker 5: the holidays.
- 1:32:49Speaker 6: And money.
- 1:32:49Speaker 5: Yeah, travel and money, the cost in and around the holidays.
- 1:32:53Speaker 5: So now we're going to go to 24, which sounds great.
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: There's a lot of, I'm sure, a lot of positives.
- 1:32:57Speaker 5: It's more games. It's more travel. We all want our
- 1:33:01Speaker 5: fans there. We all want our supporters there. What does
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: all that look like, too? And they've done a much
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: better job of supporting the players' families and getting them
- 1:33:10Speaker 5: to and from, but those are the unintended consequences that
- 1:33:14Speaker 5: we're talking about. What does the impact it has on
- 1:33:17Speaker 5: those people, too, and their support of their universities?
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: Good stuff from Sark and Mack.
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: Really good stuff.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: That's just tip of the iceberg. I'm telling you, the
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: show is like that all the way through, starting at
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: 6 o'clock tonight.
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: We'll hear a little more.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: Ohio State-designated stuff from the media and from SART coming
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: up next here on 13 Under the Zone. Certainly the
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: eyes of Texas will be on the game and the
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: eyes of the nation on the Saturday night matchup between
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: Texas and Ohio State. And again, what you just heard,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: that excerpt from Longhorn Weekly... With Coach Sark, you can
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: hear the show in its entirety coming up tonight at
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: 6 o'clock. Sark, from his media Zoom today, was asked
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: about different players, including one guy who's just continued to
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: be impressive.
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: And that's Raheem Biles.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: Not only with what he did on the field, but
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: Sark was also talking about the youth suicide prevention event
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: that Raheem is a big part of.
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: It goes back to You know, so many times when
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: we recruit players, everybody wants to look at how big,
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: how tall, how fast, how many catches, how many tackles,
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: how many interceptions, how many rushing yards. And in reality,
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: we probably look deeper into the person. And this year
- 1:34:46Speaker 5: in particular, we really dug into the person in the
- 1:34:49Speaker 5: transfer portal. And I know we're talking about Heme Biles
- 1:34:53Speaker 5: right now and what a phenomenal human being he is.
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: I mean, we're raving about one of the best plays
- 1:34:57Speaker 5: I've ever seen last week in the force fumble, but
- 1:35:00Speaker 5: now we're talking about him doing this off the field.
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: That's who he is as a human, but I'll be
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: honest with you. That's who Cam Coleman is. That's who
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: Hollywood smothers is like that's who Bo Matt, like these
- 1:35:11Speaker 5: guys are a great group of guys. And we've been
- 1:35:13Speaker 5: very fortunate for them to come in and be the
- 1:35:16Speaker 5: people that they are as much as to be the
- 1:35:18Speaker 5: players that they are. And I couldn't be happier for
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: Raheem and, and, I'm sure it's, it's, it's taken some
- 1:35:25Speaker 5: time to get this thing, um, organized and to get
- 1:35:28Speaker 5: it all put together. Um, but that's who he is.
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: I mean, I think that that's the mindset that this
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: guy has. It's yes, it is. There's a lot that
- 1:35:36Speaker 5: we do is all about ball, but there's more to
- 1:35:39Speaker 5: our players than just football, right? There's more to these guys.
- 1:35:42Speaker 5: And the more I think you guys get a chance
- 1:35:44Speaker 5: to know them and get around them. I think everybody
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: will find that out.
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: Uh, He was also asked about Spencer Shannon, called his
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: first pass as a Longhorn last Saturday after largely blocking,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: and he's known certainly for his blocking skill set. But
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: Sark was asked, what did Shannon show to earn that
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: starting spot at the tight end?
- 1:36:07Speaker 5: I think Spencer had a very consistent training camp. He's
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: a guy that, in my opinion, is probably developed as
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: much or more than any player on a roster from
- 1:36:16Speaker 5: where he was in year one to where he is now.
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: He's obviously been in the system. He's comfortable. The adjustments,
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: the subtle adjustments that are needed to be made, he
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: can make comfortably. I think where he's really improved, obviously,
- 1:36:29Speaker 5: is his pass-catching ability. And we saw that in the
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: first catch that he had, his ability to break a tackle,
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: get positive yards. But the size, the length, all those
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: things are important in the run game and in pass protection.
- 1:36:42Speaker 5: So I think he offers a lot. But, you know,
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: we played all four of those guys last week. And
- 1:36:47Speaker 5: that'll probably be very similar to how we roll them
- 1:36:49Speaker 5: out Saturday night.
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: And one more from Sark asked about the progress of
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: Zena Moselou and what he's done off that rush edge
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: and being able to assist the defensive line.
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I think Zena, I'm just talking about Spencer
- 1:37:06Speaker 5: Shanna's development. I think Zena's, you could put almost in
- 1:37:09Speaker 5: the same breath of the development of the player and
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: the person from where he was on scout team you know,
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: first year here and he was just wrecking shop and
- 1:37:20Speaker 5: he just go as hard as he could go. And
- 1:37:22Speaker 5: sometimes didn't really know where he was going, but he
- 1:37:24Speaker 5: would go hard to now this guy being a technician.
- 1:37:28Speaker 5: He's got great length. He has a tremendous motor. He's
- 1:37:31Speaker 5: got an edge about him the way he plays, but
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: now he's one of the leaders on our team. And
- 1:37:35Speaker 5: now he's one of the guys that can play multiple spots,
- 1:37:39Speaker 5: very heady player. And so, like I said, his development
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: has been very impressive and to where he's gotten to
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: on our program today, that rotation with he and Lance
- 1:37:49Speaker 5: and even Colin to some degree has been very good
- 1:37:54Speaker 5: for us.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: Good to hear that on as well.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: program here on 13 Under the Zone.
