  Speaker 4: Jared Parsons, You're lucky I came back. I'm a kidding,
• 2:26
Speaker 4: of course, but it is an incredible place. More on

• 2:41
Speaker 4: was announced late last week that his barbecue stand in
• 2:44
Speaker 4: Charlestown is going to be reopening, but it will be
• 2:47
Speaker 4: with a bit of a twist. Somebody else running it,
• 2:50
Speaker 4: and the guy that's going to be taking over Danny's
• 2:53
Speaker 4: barbecue stand is going to be in studio with Danny.
• 2:55
Speaker 4: Coming up a little bit later on the show. Plus,

Speaker 4: the Capital City Green event at the Marshall University bill
• 3:32
Speaker 4: No Fights School at Westfordiny International Younger Airport. Get into
• 3:35
Speaker 4: way about six o'clock. I'll be serving as the MC
• 3:38
Speaker 4: here to talk about it now. The voice of the
• 3:39
Speaker 4: Thunder and Heerd Steve Cotton. Good morning, sir, and welcome
• 3:42
  Speaker 4: to the show.
• 3:43
Speaker 6: Well, good morning, Dave. It is the first day of
• 3:46
Speaker 6: classes at Marshall University. We're what about an hour and
• 3:50
Speaker 6: ten minutes beyond the first classes for a lot of
• 3:55
Speaker 6: people taking the first class of their lives. A new
• 3:57
Speaker 6: group of freshmen in here.
• 4:00
Speaker 4: Remember, let's go back to your your college days. Do
• 4:03
Speaker 4: you remember your first day of class Steve at university?
• 4:08
Speaker 6: Yes, University of Florida down in Gainesville, Florida and huge Campa. Yeah.
• 4:14
Speaker 6: The campus is about a mile long from one end
• 4:17
Speaker 6: to the other, and you park about a mile as
• 4:20
Speaker 6: a commuter student beyond from the near side of campus.
• 4:24
Speaker 6: So it was those first few days trying to find
• 4:28
Speaker 6: your way around, you know, a campus that had at
• 4:31
Speaker 6: that time close to thirty thousand students and so yep,
• 4:34
Speaker 6: right now. I feel some empathy for the people walking
• 4:37
Speaker 6: around with a little campus map and they're not quite
• 4:40
Speaker 6: sure how to find whatever. And it's even extra confusing
• 4:45
Speaker 6: for anybody who's ever been. My office is in the
• 4:47
Speaker 6: cam Henderson Center, next to Gallason Hall, the old building,
• 4:53
Speaker 6: and it's amaze And people have classes in gallocks In
• 4:56
Speaker 6: Hall that they cannot find, so they're wandering through the
• 4:58
  Speaker 6: Henderson Centers. I don't know where I am. So that's
• 5:02
Speaker 6: going on this week.
• 5:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's you know, and I feel like I missed
• 5:06
Speaker 4: out on a little bit of that because I went
• 5:07
Speaker 4: to a Community of Technical College for two years and
• 5:09
Speaker 4: then I transferred to Marshall, so I missed the dorm
• 5:12
  Speaker 4: life experience.
• 5:13
  Speaker 7: You know.
• 5:13
Speaker 4: I had an apartment my first my two years at
• 5:17
Speaker 4: Marshall to finish up there, so I feel like I
• 5:20
Speaker 4: missed out a little bit, But I you know, being
• 5:22
Speaker 4: on there's a big difference between the campus of Southern
• 5:25
Speaker 4: West Virginia Community of Technical College in Logan and Williamson
• 5:29
Speaker 4: compared to Marshall University, so I know what those students
• 5:32
Speaker 4: are going through. We're got a course getting ready for
• 5:34
Speaker 4: football season. Steve coach Tony Gibson is there. We have
• 5:37
Speaker 4: a new athletic director and Cherald Harrison, a whole lot
• 5:40
Speaker 4: of new players getting ready to open up on the
• 5:42
Speaker 4: road against Georgia here in a couple of weeks. So
• 5:45
Speaker 4: that's an exciting time.
• 5:48
Speaker 6: I am the old guy at this point who is
• 5:52
Speaker 6: reminiscing about the years when I had to learn about
• 5:55
Speaker 6: maybe fifteen newcomers. I'm the football roster who might play
• 5:58
Speaker 6: that year. And now it's that's not just Marshall that
• 6:01
Speaker 6: Oh yeah, the world we live in now and it
• 6:04
Speaker 6: is exciting. You have so much new every year. A
• 6:07
Speaker 6: few weeks ago, I got the ballot from the Sun
• 6:12
Speaker 6: Belt Conference wanting preseason polls and all that kind of thing.
• 6:15
Speaker 6: I thought, how does anybody know what they're Everybody has
• 6:20
Speaker 6: at least fifty new players, and so every year is
• 6:25
Speaker 6: even more new. You know less than you did about
• 6:28
Speaker 6: your team than you would have even a decade ago.
• 6:31
Speaker 4: It's the times, As mister Dylon said, they are a
• 6:35
Speaker 4: changing in the world of college athletics. Again, this is
• 6:37
Speaker 4: not just a marsh university thing. They're dealing with it
• 6:40
Speaker 4: in Morgantown, They're dealing with it at college campuses across America.
• 6:43
Speaker 4: We're talking to Steve Cotton, the voice of the Thundering
• 6:45
Speaker 4: Nerven Dave Island Show on five. Any Life is Brought
• 6:47
Speaker 4: to You part by Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury
• 6:50
Speaker 4: law firm. Arioight, Let's get ready to Paint the Capital
• 6:51
Speaker 4: City green. It's coming up Thursday night at the bill
• 6:54
Speaker 4: No Flight School at West Virginia International Jaeger Airport STEE.
• 6:57
Speaker 4: For those that have never been to a Paint the
• 6:59
Speaker 4: Capital City event, talk about what kind of mayhem that ensues.
• 7:04
Speaker 6: It is certainly unique, and unique is an overused word,
• 7:09
Speaker 6: but I don't know of any other school that goes
• 7:13
Speaker 6: with an event like this at the airport and a
• 7:16
Speaker 6: giant hangar that is wonderful. The bill No Flight School
• 7:20
Speaker 6: is a gem of Marshall University. You have those Kelly
• 7:24
Speaker 6: green planes in and out, and then you know the
• 7:30
Speaker 6: way they decorate the hangar and all the electronics and everything.
• 7:34
Speaker 6: It is a one of a kind. Coach Gibson, as
• 7:37
Speaker 6: a first year coach, we talk about all the newness
• 7:39
Speaker 6: every team has every year, but Marshall even more so
• 7:42
Speaker 6: you have him. He'll be a part of the program.
• 7:45
Speaker 6: Both basketball coaches Corney Jackson of the men and women's
• 7:48
Speaker 6: coaches Julie Foulkes, I know, Keith Roberts, track and field
• 7:52
Speaker 6: head coach Ian waaltsh the swimming coach, are all scheduled
• 7:55
Speaker 6: to be a part of the program and there will
• 7:57
Speaker 6: be many others there as well. It is a.
• 8:00
Speaker 4: Evening, it is indeed, and again proceeds will benefit the
• 8:03
Speaker 4: Big Green. The entire thing being put on by the
• 8:06
Speaker 4: marsh University Quarterback Club of Charleston. It's this Thursday night.
• 8:09
Speaker 4: Of course, I'm going to be serving as the MC
• 8:10
Speaker 4: and and normally Steve Animal is with me, Steve Cotton,
• 8:15
Speaker 4: but he had a prior commitment. He'll be at Fife
• 8:17
Speaker 4: Street Live for a live broadcast that night, so they're
• 8:20
Speaker 4: going to be stuck with me. We have the live auction.
• 8:22
Speaker 4: As you said, the coaches are going to be there,
• 8:24
Speaker 4: and you're going to be hosting as has been in
• 8:26
Speaker 4: the past. You're going to be doing a little Q
• 8:28
Speaker 4: and A with some of the folks on stage. Talk
• 8:30
  Speaker 4: about that.
• 8:31
Speaker 6: Yeah, it is. I think that that's the list of
• 8:33
Speaker 6: coaches that I just ran down. I know for sure
• 8:36
Speaker 6: they're going to be there because they are part of
• 8:37
Speaker 6: the program, and it is you look at it, there's
• 8:43
Speaker 6: so much new. We're talking about the veteran is Ian Walls,
• 8:46
Speaker 6: the swim coach. He's been here for the head coach
• 8:49
Speaker 6: for four years, five years, something like that. Most of
• 8:52
Speaker 6: the others are there for the first or second time.
• 8:56
Speaker 6: So it is an opportunity for all of Herd Nation
• 9:00
Speaker 6: to come together in the capital city and get to
• 9:05
Speaker 6: know some of these people, many of whom they've never
• 9:07
Speaker 6: had a chance to meet before.
• 9:09
Speaker 4: Now there are still tickets available, but they're going to
• 9:11
Speaker 4: be gone by the time Thursday rolls around. So I
• 9:14
Speaker 4: wouldn't plan on showing up at the door and think
• 9:16
Speaker 4: you're gonna be able to get in. You need to
• 9:18
Speaker 4: get your tickets in advance. The email address for that
• 9:20
Speaker 4: is Big Green at Marshall dot edu. Again, it's big
• 9:23
Speaker 4: Green at Marshall dot edu. Or you can call three
• 9:26
Speaker 4: zero four sixty nine six forty six sixty one. That's
• 9:29
Speaker 4: three oh four sixty nine six forty six sixty one.
• 9:32
Speaker 4: Information is available various spots on the interweb, including the
• 9:37
Speaker 4: Quarterback Club of Charleston, and they have a Facebook page
• 9:41
Speaker 4: that's got the information on there. I've also got to
• 9:43
Speaker 4: information shared on my social media and Dave Island Radio
• 9:46
Speaker 4: over on Facebook, so be sure and check that out.
• 9:48
Speaker 4: And the mayor of Charleston, Amy Goodwin, who has one
• 9:52
Speaker 4: kid going to WVU and one going to Marshall, so
• 9:54
Speaker 4: she's got dual citizenship. She's going to be given the
• 9:56
Speaker 4: opening address. It's just a good good time all around.
• 10:00
Speaker 4: Our friend Chef Paul is providing the food. You and
• 10:03
  Speaker 4: I are food Guy's cotton.
• 10:04
  Speaker 8: You know.
• 10:04
Speaker 4: The food is always.
• 10:05
Speaker 6: Good, yes, And I am kind of surprised that you
• 10:09
Speaker 6: did return from your trip. I was watching your food
• 10:12
Speaker 6: experiences the last few days.
• 10:15
Speaker 4: You ever been down, I mean you're a traveler. You
• 10:17
Speaker 4: ever been down to what they call the Golden Isles
• 10:19
Speaker 4: down there around Saint Simon's Jacko Island. Ever been there?
• 10:22
Speaker 6: Actually, No, done all the Florida stuff as a resident
• 10:27
Speaker 6: of Florida for several years and done a lot of
• 10:30
Speaker 6: both of the Carolinas, but no, not the Georgia kind
• 10:33
Speaker 6: of thing. Well, that is on my list.
• 10:34
Speaker 4: I will say this, if you want to go to
• 10:37
Speaker 4: a place it sounds like I'm, you know, part of
• 10:39
Speaker 4: their tourism department. But if you want to go to
• 10:41
Speaker 4: a place that's non touristy. We didn't stay on the beach, Okay,
• 10:46
Speaker 4: our place was about a mile or two away, but
• 10:48
Speaker 4: simple jump in the car, you drive to the beach,
• 10:52
Speaker 4: free parking, very very clean, locals are great, the food
• 10:56
Speaker 4: was great, so I would I'd highly advise. Now, it
• 10:59
Speaker 4: takes a while to get there, especially we seem to
• 11:02
Speaker 4: encounter every wreck on the eastern shore, you know, on
• 11:05
Speaker 4: the way down there. It took a little while to
• 11:06
Speaker 4: get there. This kind of a hall if you're driving.
• 11:08
Speaker 4: But we had a good time. So if you get
• 11:09
Speaker 4: an opportunity, steve good on there and check it out.
• 11:12
Speaker 4: Saint Simon's. It's it's an absolutely fantastic place, all right. Again,
• 11:15
Speaker 4: Ben To Capitol City Green at the build no flight
• 11:17
Speaker 4: school up at the airport. It's Thursday night at six o'clock.
• 11:21
Speaker 4: Marshall coaches will be there. I think the cheerleaders are
• 11:24
Speaker 4: going to be there. It's just a great night, great food,
• 11:26
Speaker 4: great drink, getting ready for what's going to be an
• 11:29
Speaker 4: exciting Thundering Herd season. I would be remiss, though. I
• 11:33
Speaker 4: want to bring this up real quick before we let
• 11:35
Speaker 4: you go. Your heart has got to be broken just
• 11:38
Speaker 4: a little bit for Jj Roberts. He was a standout
• 11:41
Speaker 4: at cabol middleand high school, all around stud on defense,
• 11:44
Speaker 4: had a real chance and was just killing it in
• 11:47
Speaker 4: training camp for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Suffered a season
• 11:51
Speaker 4: ending injury during a practice scrimmage last week. What a
• 11:55
Speaker 4: great I got a chance to meet and hang out
• 11:57
Speaker 4: with him last year.
• 11:58
  Speaker 2: Steve.
• 11:58
Speaker 4: What a great, great young man, and I know his
• 12:01
Speaker 4: story is not over yet.
• 12:03
Speaker 6: His character will not allow this to be any more
• 12:07
Speaker 6: than the speed bunt Dave. You mentioned it right there.
• 12:09
Speaker 6: He is a top notch human being. He has a
• 12:14
Speaker 6: maturity about him that will allow him to instead of
• 12:19
Speaker 6: getting all down about this and it's a bummer for
• 12:22
Speaker 6: him and everybody else, and he's got to do all
• 12:23
Speaker 6: the rehab and everything, but he has a big picture view.
• 12:27
Speaker 6: He understands what is important in life. He understands the
• 12:32
Speaker 6: overcoming adversity is something we all do and he will
• 12:36
Speaker 6: jump into rehab and that kind of thing and come
• 12:38
Speaker 6: out on the other side of it even better.
• 12:40
Speaker 4: All right, And he was just absolutely killing it. As
• 12:42
Speaker 4: a matter of fact, the day of the injury. That morning,
• 12:45
Speaker 4: I was reading an article that was done by a
• 12:48
Speaker 4: beat writer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that talked about
• 12:50
Speaker 4: what a great story that this young man was. And
• 12:52
Speaker 4: then he goes out on that scrimmage on Thursday, season
• 12:55
Speaker 4: ending injury. But we certainly wish him the best because,
• 12:58
Speaker 4: as we said, his story is not over yet. Hey, Steve,
• 13:00
Speaker 4: thanks for taking time at your schedule to be here.
• 13:02
Speaker 4: Looking forward to seeing you and hanging out with you

• 16:21
Speaker 4: Wally and Whippies tells me the via text season ending
• 16:24
Speaker 4: not confirmed. More info later. And you certainly hope that
• 16:28
Speaker 4: is the case, because you always want players from you know,
• 16:31
Speaker 4: from our college and from our university's Marshall WVU State.
• 16:34
Speaker 4: You see, whatever, we always want them to do well
• 16:38
Speaker 4: once they leave to go into the pros. But I
• 16:41
Speaker 4: got a special fundus for JJ Roberts because I said,
• 16:44
Speaker 4: I got to know him a couple of years ago.
• 16:45
Speaker 4: He is a class act, a quality young man, and
• 16:50
Speaker 4: uh it was a long shot for him to be
• 16:53
Speaker 4: in the NFL to begin with. He was killing it
• 16:56
Speaker 4: in the Buccaneers camp. I mean, as I said, I
• 16:58
Speaker 4: was reading last week an article from one of the
• 17:00
Speaker 4: beat writers that covers the Buccaneers that said this kid
• 17:03
  Speaker 4: is for real.
• 17:03
  Speaker 3: And then on.
• 17:04
Speaker 4: Thursday, a serious injury. Jim Workman tells me, maybe not.
• 17:09
Speaker 4: That was the initial reports that it was season ending.
• 17:12
Speaker 4: Maybe not. We certainly hope that is the case. We
• 17:15
Speaker 4: will keep you posted Danny Jones coming up a little
• 17:17
Speaker 4: bit later on in the show. If you're a listener
• 17:20
Speaker 4: to one of our sisters stations, you're in the building
• 17:22
Speaker 4: ninety eight seven of the Mouth. And we lost one
• 17:23
Speaker 4: of her valuable team members on Fridays, Amy Ryan, opted
• 17:27
Speaker 4: to perhaps better herself and get out of radio. I'm
• 17:30
Speaker 4: just joking about that. Amy. Amy served us well for
• 17:33
Speaker 4: a couple of years, and she'd opted to go do
• 17:35
Speaker 4: something else outside of the world of radio, and so
• 17:38
Speaker 4: we wish her the best. But we got a slot
• 17:40
Speaker 4: to fill on the Mouth and from three to seven,
• 17:43
Speaker 4: and why not promote from within because this guy has
• 17:46
Speaker 4: been around for a while and he never really went away.
• 17:50
Speaker 4: Shockly is his name. He's a Charleston native, of course,
• 17:53
Speaker 4: and he's gonna be taken over that three to seven
• 17:54
Speaker 4: slot in the Mountain, so we thought we'd welcome into
• 17:56
Speaker 4: the studio. He was hanging out with Animal this morning.
• 18:00
Speaker 12: How you doing, man, I'm glad to be back, man.
• 18:02
Speaker 12: I'm excited about the opportunity. And it's one of those
• 18:06
Speaker 12: things where you can do radio for a long time
• 18:09
Speaker 12: you think, yeah, yeah, I need to get out of
• 18:11
Speaker 12: this for a while. I've been doing it for too long,
• 18:12
Speaker 12: and then you it has a way of kind of
• 18:15
Speaker 12: pulling you back in. And sometimes it can have a
• 18:17
Speaker 12: way of being there for you right when you need
• 18:20
  Speaker 12: it the most.
• 18:21
Speaker 13: And that's kind of the way it's worked out for me.
• 18:23
Speaker 4: Well, somebody commented on our social media when we did
• 18:26
Speaker 4: a little graphic about you coming back, they said, he
• 18:28
Speaker 4: left question mark. Yeah, I mean you were you were
• 18:31
Speaker 4: living in DC and you were working there, but you
• 18:33
Speaker 4: were but you had, you know, family ties. You know,
• 18:35
Speaker 4: you're from this area, so you were back and forth
• 18:37
Speaker 4: a lot, and so whenever you were here, you would
• 18:39
Speaker 4: hang out with us, would come in the on the
• 18:40
Speaker 4: morning show Steve, but you weren't officially here. Yeah, because
• 18:43
Speaker 4: you were there. Now you're not there anymore. Now you're here.
• 18:46
Speaker 13: Yeah. I didn't move there to do another radio gig.
• 18:49
Speaker 13: So that was another important thing.
• 18:50
Speaker 12: So I said, I'm not leaving, I'm just going to
• 18:53
Speaker 12: be not here as often.
• 18:55
Speaker 13: And so now I'm going to be here a lot more.
• 18:56
Speaker 4: You were part of the auxiliary that's there. You go,
• 18:59
Speaker 4: and you're the resident historian when it comes to music
• 19:03
Speaker 4: here in concerts of all varieties. And and I'll tell
• 19:05
Speaker 4: you if you are you back on social media again
• 19:07
  Speaker 4: because I know you're a wife.
• 19:08
Speaker 13: Yeah, I started a page back up.
• 19:09
Speaker 4: Okay, follow this guy on Facebook because he's always posted.
• 19:12
Speaker 4: I mean, you've got an incredible collection of stuff vintage
• 19:17
Speaker 4: Charleston when it comes to music. But also and it's
• 19:19
Speaker 4: not just rock. I mean you're a rock guy, but
• 19:21
Speaker 4: I mean you're posting things about other genres of music
• 19:23
Speaker 4: and about what a hotbed over the years, the Charleston,
• 19:27
Speaker 4: the Charleston Huntington area has been for music. So make
• 19:31
Speaker 4: sure you follow him.
• 19:32
Speaker 13: One of my few superpowers.
• 19:33
Speaker 4: I think, let's talk about your career in radio though,
• 19:37
  Speaker 4: I mean, because you've been you've been around. Again, you're
• 19:39
  Speaker 4: a you're a dunbar guy. Yeah right, but but you've
• 19:41
Speaker 4: been around and you worked in different places. Talk about
• 19:44
Speaker 4: your career here in the Charleston market.
• 19:45
Speaker 12: Well, as far as the career goes it, the candle
• 19:51
Speaker 12: was kind of let with super duper Charlie Cooper. When
• 19:53
Speaker 12: I was a kid, I was in Greade school listening
• 19:56
Speaker 12: to him on W A Z And from listening to him,
• 20:00
Speaker 12: I thought, yeah, that would be a great gig. And
• 20:03
Speaker 12: then a few years later I was listening to other
• 20:05
Speaker 12: local jocks, Joe Kerner JK, the DJ, and it was
• 20:11
Speaker 12: finally whenever I was in student council, I was the
• 20:15
Speaker 12: secretary of student council, you know, high office stuff at
• 20:18
Speaker 12: you yeah, and at Delmar High School when I hired
• 20:22
Speaker 12: a guy by the name of Bill Shahan to do
• 20:25
Speaker 12: some dances, and from there he kind of remembered my
• 20:28
Speaker 12: name and in the summer of nineteen ninety I called
• 20:31
Speaker 12: him up and I said, hey, man, you got a
• 20:33
  Speaker 12: gig for me?
• 20:34
Speaker 13: And he said, yeah, I can use you, Bubby, and.
• 20:36
Speaker 4: He called everybody Bubby led great Bill Shahan.
• 20:38
  Speaker 2: Yep.
• 20:38
Speaker 13: He hired me on into the newsroom.
• 20:40
Speaker 12: So my first gig was actually as a news guy
• 20:44
Speaker 12: for WVSR, and that was really cool. We had a
• 20:48
Speaker 12: little bit of a new staff there, and then within
• 20:50
Speaker 12: a relatively short period of time, an opportunity to just
• 20:54
Speaker 12: basically be third wheel on the morning show for mister
• 20:58
Speaker 12: Bob Campbell presented itself and I just kind of took
• 21:02
  Speaker 12: off from there.
• 21:03
Speaker 4: And of course you've been around, you know, from the
• 21:05
Speaker 4: various various stations here and.
• 21:08
Speaker 13: One O two, one O five, qb E.
• 21:11
Speaker 12: This is actually my fifth stop on the FM dial
• 21:15
  Speaker 12: in this market.
• 21:16
Speaker 4: Just in just in this market correct.
• 21:18
Speaker 13: Yeah, and then most.
• 21:19
Speaker 4: People, you know, you think like Steve Animal, Rob Reel,
• 21:22
Speaker 4: some of the other poks this company, they had to
• 21:24
Speaker 4: go across the country to get fired that many times.
• 21:25
Speaker 12: But you just stayed a well, actually I got lucky.
• 21:28
Speaker 12: I only got I only got fired one ton.
• 21:30
Speaker 13: That was with xerock.
• 21:31
Speaker 12: And you know, you go from active rock and you
• 21:34
Speaker 12: decide you want to go to right wing talk. It's
• 21:36
Speaker 12: like that's quite a transition. Perhaps they didn't really want
• 21:39
Speaker 12: us here to begin with. We'll take the hint.
• 21:41
Speaker 4: Talking to Larry Shockley. But Dave Island Show in five
• 21:44
Speaker 4: Ady Live is brought to you a part by Live

Speaker 4: So you're gonna be taking over to slot three to seven. Yes,
• 21:58
Speaker 4: before and Amy did a great job there, I mean
• 22:01
Speaker 4: she did. She's a quality individual, quality broadcaster. Yes, some
• 22:04
Speaker 4: of the segments that you do there, we do live
• 22:06
Speaker 4: at five. You do back to back live cuts at
• 22:10
Speaker 4: five o'clock kind of sending people out out the door
• 22:14
Speaker 4: you'll close or getting close to the end of your
• 22:17
Speaker 4: shift with the steroid of seven, which you What is
• 22:22
Speaker 4: it about the classic rock format that you enjoy so much.
• 22:25
Speaker 12: I think that you are getting anytime you get closer
• 22:29
Speaker 12: and closer to the root of a genre, regardless of
• 22:33
Speaker 12: what kind of music it is, I think that's where
• 22:35
Speaker 12: you're getting the most pure, the most the purity of
• 22:41
Speaker 12: that form. And so with classic rock, you're getting just
• 22:44
Speaker 12: a couple of generations away from the blues, and then
• 22:48
Speaker 12: before that you're looking into pre rock and roll. So
• 22:50
Speaker 12: I just absolutely love classic rock. It was they were
• 22:53
Speaker 12: still well into the seventies, kind of inventing the wheel
• 22:57
Speaker 12: in some ways, and everything that's come out after that
• 23:00
Speaker 12: it's been highly derivative of something just over the last
• 23:03
Speaker 12: twenty years, and so classics always been much more appealing
• 23:07
Speaker 12: to me for that reason.
• 23:07
Speaker 4: Well, and you know, and we talked about this on
• 23:10
Speaker 4: the show in the past. When you use the term
• 23:13
Speaker 4: classic rock or retro you referenced Jkvi DJ good friend
• 23:17
Speaker 4: of mine, Joe Kerner, who does the Retrofest every year.
• 23:20
Speaker 4: People don't want to think about it. They want to think, well,
• 23:22
Speaker 4: retro is the nineteen fifties, nineteen sixties for that news
• 23:25
Speaker 4: for you, retro is now the early two thousand.
• 23:28
  Speaker 12: Yeah, that's that's another thing where it's kind of a
• 23:30
Speaker 12: moving a sliding scale, because it wasn't too long ago
• 23:35
Speaker 12: that I was in my car driving around and something.
• 23:39
Speaker 12: I was cerrus XM and there was an oldies channel,
• 23:43
Speaker 12: an oldies channel, and they're playing Black Sabbath. I'm like,
• 23:46
Speaker 12: I'm not ready for that. Well, oldies to me is Elvis.
• 23:49
Speaker 12: Oldies to me is sorry.
• 23:52
Speaker 4: It's not Darrel oldies. Oldies now by its true definition,
• 23:56
Speaker 4: oldies retro classic is early two thousands. That is correct,
• 24:00
Speaker 4: and we mix some of that stuff in because you know,
• 24:03
Speaker 4: we have to now on the station. If you haven't
• 24:05
Speaker 4: had a chance, by the way, rock station of the Year,
• 24:07
Speaker 4: thank you with Broadcaster Association. Yes, if you haven't had
• 24:11
Speaker 4: a chance to listen to the station. I mean we
• 24:13
Speaker 4: still play the skinnerd and we still play the Eagles,
• 24:16
Speaker 4: and we still you mentioned Black Sabbath and Bloyister Cult
• 24:19
Speaker 4: and CCR and Clapton and thirty eight Special Ralman Brother
• 24:24
Speaker 4: We still play all this stuff. But you know, you
• 24:28
Speaker 4: got to include some of the late nineties early too,
• 24:31
Speaker 4: So you're going to hear some food fight. Yeah, we're
• 24:32
Speaker 4: going to hear some stuff from Nirvana in there too,
• 24:35
  Speaker 4: That is correct.
• 24:36
Speaker 12: But you know, I really like that we kind of
• 24:39
Speaker 12: have our little slot and we stay within it within
• 24:42
Speaker 12: for the most part. Not to totally hate on anything
• 24:46
Speaker 12: it's come out the last twenty years, but I just
• 24:48
Speaker 12: I just really think that the the way we're doing
• 24:51
Speaker 12: it is the way it should be done in my view.
• 24:53
Speaker 4: All right, And so you'll be on Monday through Friday
• 24:56
Speaker 4: three to seven. There's also an afternoon I mean a
• 24:58
Speaker 4: weekend component in there. When you on the weekend.
• 25:00
Speaker 12: Three to seven as well, I think on well, somebody
• 25:04
  Speaker 12: better tell you.
• 25:04
Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm on there. I'm on their Sunday's noon to seven,
• 25:08
Speaker 4: so you can spend your Sundays with me on the mount. Hey, Shockley.
• 25:11
Speaker 4: Great to have you back here, sir. The Knah Valley

• 25:20
Speaker 4: I'll be listening on my drive home every every day
• 25:23
Speaker 4: as I leave the radio ranch here. It's gonna be

Speaker 3: Well this one you almost did. Now I'm okay. Now
• 29:36
  Speaker 3: it's okay.
• 29:37
Speaker 4: Now. Big controversy hit over the last couple of days
• 29:40
Speaker 4: and everybody's talking about on social media. Danny got awagh
• 29:44
Speaker 4: in on this. Trick or Treating in Kanawh County has
• 29:48
Speaker 4: been moved. The little candy beckers are going to be
• 29:51
Speaker 4: out Thursday the thirtieth instead of the Halloween night. And
• 29:54
Speaker 4: based on the reaction from social media, you would think
• 29:57
Speaker 4: the Canawh County Commission was killing kittens or something. Over
• 30:00
Speaker 4: run Virginia Street people and the mayor and I talked
• 30:03
Speaker 4: about this. The things that people get fired up the
• 30:05
Speaker 4: most are Halloween and Christmas parade times. You were mayor
• 30:09
Speaker 4: for a long time and again, this is a county
• 30:11
Speaker 4: commission thing. But yeah, trick or Treating is going to
• 30:14
Speaker 4: be on Thursday night, the thirtieth instead of Friday night
• 30:16
Speaker 4: because they don't want to interfere with high school football.
• 30:19
Speaker 4: Everybody losing their mind's over. Danny.
• 30:21
Speaker 19: Well, I'm for what they're doing. I think it ought
• 30:27
Speaker 19: to be on Thursday night.
• 30:28
Speaker 4: Well, and I think well, and again, it was all
• 30:30
Speaker 4: over I was just reading last night. It was all
• 30:32
Speaker 4: over my social media. And I'll talk about a little
• 30:34
Speaker 4: bit more a little bit later on. I didn't want
• 30:36
Speaker 4: to give you an opportunity there to talk about you
• 30:38
Speaker 4: lost a good friend.
• 30:41
Speaker 19: Well, he wasn't a good friend. Somebody I knew and
• 30:44
Speaker 19: I interviewed. Okay, Jerry Spence. He's a whelming trial lawyer
• 30:52
Speaker 19: who wore a buckskin jacket and a black turtleneck and
• 30:56
Speaker 19: white hair, and he's the best trial in the country.
• 31:00
Speaker 19: Had lost hadn't lost Kate since nineteen sixty nine. And
• 31:05
Speaker 19: this is what is going to begin my book. And
• 31:09
Speaker 19: then I'm going to tell you what his Maybe I
• 31:14
Speaker 19: got this from him. I didn't do it purposely. What
• 31:18
Speaker 19: else is there but the truth? The truth is to
• 31:20
Speaker 19: be used. The reason we don't get to the bottom
• 31:23
Speaker 19: of an issue. People don't tell the truth. That's come
• 31:25
Speaker 19: from Danny Jones. Okay, here's Jerry Spence. Tell the truth,
• 31:33
Speaker 19: tell it all, tell it the way you know it.
• 31:37
Speaker 19: You'd be shocked to how well it work.
• 31:40
Speaker 3: He did not believe in putting his.
• 31:42
Speaker 19: Own clients on the stand. He believed in making the
• 31:47
Speaker 19: government client the government witnesses, his witnesses, and he took
• 31:53
Speaker 19: some pretty heat. Had a Melda Marcos, he had Miss.
• 31:59
  Speaker 3: Wyoming when.
• 32:03
Speaker 19: Bob Guccioni did a nasty article about her in Penthouse,
• 32:07
Speaker 19: and he said, he said, we all know mister Guccioni
• 32:13
Speaker 19: over there. He's the man in the brown velvet pants
• 32:16
Speaker 19: like that. Now, he won the case, but then he
• 32:20
Speaker 19: lost it on appeal. And every time he did a
• 32:22
Speaker 19: case like this, he wrote a book. So in case
• 32:25
Speaker 19: he lost it on appeal, he got his money.
• 32:28
Speaker 4: So you're telling me that somebody who was here in
• 32:30
Speaker 4: this area represented a Melda Marcos and Miss Wyoming in
• 32:36
Speaker 4: a case against Bob Guccioni from Penhouse.
• 32:38
Speaker 3: No, not from this area. He's from Wyoming.
• 32:40
Speaker 4: Okay. I thought there was a tide of this area though,
• 32:42
Speaker 4: because I saw people posted about it.
• 32:43
Speaker 3: I mean, no. He I interviewed him twice, maybe three times.
• 32:48
Speaker 4: Okay, okay, okay, I'm sorry.
• 32:50
  Speaker 3: And.
• 32:52
Speaker 19: I just I worshiped him. I listened to his and
• 32:55
Speaker 19: I didn't read his books. I listened to him, okay,
• 32:59
Speaker 19: and he was great. And I wrote him a letter
• 33:06
  Speaker 19: and I didn't get a response before I left the
• 33:08
Speaker 19: Mayor's office telling him what a profound effect he had
• 33:12
  Speaker 19: on my life.
• 33:14
Speaker 4: And uh, there are those characters, and you're gonna bring
• 33:17
Speaker 4: all these out in your book, I'm sure, which we'll
• 33:19
Speaker 4: get to your book here in a little bit. But
• 33:20
Speaker 4: there are those characters that even though sometimes, as you
• 33:23
Speaker 4: said in your case, Danny, it's just a chance encounter,
• 33:25
Speaker 4: couple of interviews here, there truly have an opportunity to
• 33:29
Speaker 4: make an impact on your life, more so than what
• 33:31
Speaker 4: maybe your family or friends, the people you did with
• 33:33
  Speaker 4: every day.
• 33:33
Speaker 19: And let's keep in mind here, whatever people think about me,
• 33:39
Speaker 19: I leaned leaned very slightly to the right. He leaned
• 33:44
Speaker 19: pretty far to the left.
• 33:47
Speaker 3: But he is a decent guy.
• 33:49
Speaker 19: He represented Randy Weaver. You know who Randy Weaver was
• 33:54
Speaker 19: of Ruby Ridge fame, and uh, he said out I
• 33:58
Speaker 19: paid to represent him. He hated the Fed and you know,
• 34:01
Speaker 19: he just he didn't like him. And there's plenty on
• 34:07
Speaker 19: c spend. You can watch all those hearings with Jerry Spence.
• 34:12
Speaker 3: He was. He was a great man, a.
• 34:14
Speaker 4: Great man and obviously a character as well. It's nine
• 34:16
Speaker 4: forty one, but Dave Island showing five at Elieve is

• 34:28
Speaker 4: last week. I was on vacation three days last week,
• 34:30
Speaker 4: and so I'm, you know, scrolling through social media, and
• 34:33
Speaker 4: I see Danny that Danny's Barbecue Stan is getting new life. Yep,
• 34:39
Speaker 4: all right, talk about that.
• 34:40
Speaker 19: Well, I have a young man who's gonna take it over.
• 34:45
Speaker 19: His name is Benjamin Noel Noel and we call him bj.
• 34:51
Speaker 19: He has a restaurant in Beckley, and I'm going to
• 34:55
Speaker 19: I'm backing him and because I want to see the
• 35:00
  Speaker 19: place open again.
• 35:01
Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's been ever since you you closed it.
• 35:04
Speaker 4: And of course we were down there. We did a
• 35:06
Speaker 4: live broadcast from there in the closing days. That was
• 35:08
Speaker 4: the end of twenty twenty two, twenty to one. Okay,
• 35:12
Speaker 4: a couple of years ago. Your your desire was to
• 35:16
Speaker 4: find somebody to take it over. And that's why you
• 35:20
Speaker 4: kept the decorations, all the nostalgia stuff that you kept
• 35:23
Speaker 4: all that there because you wanted somebody Danny to come
• 35:26
Speaker 4: in and to take it over and to continue your legacy.
• 35:29
Speaker 19: And I still I was working there this morning from.
• 35:36
Speaker 3: Let me see from eight.
• 35:42
Speaker 4: Until one, Okay, it's eight pm last night to one
• 35:48
Speaker 4: this morning, what were you doing in there picking pork, picking.
• 35:54
Speaker 19: Pork and freezing it and cleaning and yeah, and doing stuff.
• 36:01
Speaker 4: So this guy is going to take it over as
• 36:04
Speaker 4: going to keep the same name. It'll be Danny's Danny's Barbecue.
• 36:07
Speaker 4: Wouldn't have it any other way, right, And all the
• 36:10
Speaker 4: recipes are gonna are going to be your recipes, the
• 36:13
Speaker 4: same recipes. I was talking to Shockley about this a
• 36:15
Speaker 4: little bit earlier, and uh, I said, you know, one
• 36:18
Speaker 4: of the things and I and we ate lunch here,
• 36:21
Speaker 4: you know, a couple of times a week here at
• 36:23
Speaker 4: the here at eleven eleven. Well, one of the things
• 36:25
Speaker 4: I liked about about your food, The barbecue was great,
• 36:29
Speaker 4: but to me, the side dishes were just as good.
• 36:31
Speaker 4: And when you would do that smoked chicken noodle soup,
• 36:34
Speaker 4: that's the good stuff, buddy.
• 36:36
Speaker 19: We're trying to figure out whether they have salads or not.
• 36:39
Speaker 19: Uh huh, And that's a lot of work, yeah, it is, indeed.
• 36:43
Speaker 3: So we're trying to fabout the women like the salads.
• 36:46
Speaker 4: Well, some of the guys do too. I like the salads, but.
• 36:54
Speaker 3: We're looking forward to it well open September fourth.
• 36:58
Speaker 4: And how big a part of this are you going
• 37:01
Speaker 4: to be? I mean, I know you said you're backing him,
• 37:03
Speaker 4: and you wanted somebody I'll work every day, So you're
• 37:05
Speaker 4: going to be in there working every day.
• 37:07
Speaker 19: Now, I'm not going to get paid. He's going to
• 37:12
Speaker 19: pay me a percent of the gross, of very small
• 37:17
Speaker 19: percent of the gross every week to try to pay
• 37:19
Speaker 19: me back some of the money that I put into it.
• 37:22
Speaker 19: But if he doesn't pay it, he doesn't pay a day.
• 37:24
Speaker 19: But I'm not worried about it.
• 37:26
Speaker 4: So what was it? I mean, you know that made
• 37:29
Speaker 4: you want to do this again?
• 37:31
Speaker 19: He came down here and he wanted to buy some
• 37:34
Speaker 19: of the equipment. I said, well don't you just let
• 37:37
Speaker 19: me give you some equipment right here, right now, and
• 37:44
Speaker 19: you can do it. So that's what he wants to do.
• 37:48
Speaker 4: And but what what was it in what did he
• 37:51
Speaker 4: see in this? You said, he's a restaurant tour from Beckley?
• 37:54
Speaker 4: What And we hadn't intended on having him on the
• 37:56
Speaker 4: show today, but unfortunately he's working right now. He's trying
• 37:58
Speaker 4: to get ready, which you completely uner and we'll have
• 38:00
Speaker 4: him on at a future time. What did he see
• 38:02
Speaker 4: in this place that made him say I want to
• 38:05
  Speaker 4: take this over.
• 38:07
Speaker 3: I don't know how else to say this.
• 38:09
  Speaker 19: He's a fan, you know, he's he's a He's a
• 38:13
Speaker 19: guy that likes me, and he likes what I do,
• 38:16
Speaker 19: and he likes the food I sell and he wants
• 38:20
Speaker 19: to do it himself.
• 38:23
  Speaker 4: Well, it's I mean, it's I cannot tell you the
• 38:26
Speaker 4: number of people that I run into Danny on a
• 38:28
Speaker 4: regular basis that talk about how much they missed that
• 38:31
Speaker 4: little place. And that's just one of the restaurants that
• 38:33
Speaker 4: you you that you owned and ran, but that was
• 38:36
Speaker 4: that was the last one, eight total. And people still
• 38:40
Speaker 4: talk about they still talk about your rib place. They
• 38:43
Speaker 4: still talk about the times that you, you know, we're working
• 38:46
Speaker 4: for other people, you know, the different places, the Sterling, whatever,
• 38:49
Speaker 4: wherever it was that you worked. I mean, you you
• 38:52
Speaker 4: got quite a quite a legacy here in Charleston, and
• 38:55
  Speaker 4: I don't I don't think you're done yet.
• 38:57
Speaker 3: I like to Sterling today.
• 39:00
Speaker 4: What was it about the Sterling that made it so?
• 39:02
Speaker 19: I was young seventeen and I was the main cook.
• 39:08
Speaker 19: I had the salad guy here, I had the broiler
• 39:11
Speaker 19: guy here, and the salad guy had he was the
• 39:14
Speaker 19: main cook, but he said get over there, and I
• 39:20
Speaker 19: became the main cook. And I sit there with a
• 39:24
Speaker 19: cigarette hanging out of my mouth the.
• 39:26
Speaker 4: Way it was done back then.
• 39:28
Speaker 3: Yeah, it was done.
• 39:29
Speaker 4: And maybe a drink in your hand too.
• 39:32
Speaker 19: Saturday night we would drink from three o'clock. There was
• 39:38
Speaker 19: four of us, and we would drink a bottle of whiskey,
• 39:41
Speaker 19: and then we'd go down to Court Street and buy
• 39:45
Speaker 19: another bottle of whiskey, a six dollars bottle of whiskey
• 39:48
Speaker 19: for ten dollars, and we'd drink it, and I'd get
• 39:51
  Speaker 19: real hungry.
• 39:51
Speaker 3: I'd come back to the rest and eat. And I
• 39:56
  Speaker 3: loved it.
• 39:57
Speaker 19: And I worked nine at night till six in the morning,
• 40:01
Speaker 19: and it was it was heaven.
• 40:03
  Speaker 3: I love it.
• 40:04
Speaker 4: How's the book coming?
• 40:06
Speaker 3: Well? You had an effect on that. Okay, you don't
• 40:09
  Speaker 3: even know it.
• 40:10
Speaker 4: Okay, good or bad?
• 40:12
Speaker 3: Well, I think a good effect.
• 40:14
Speaker 4: Okay, talk about it.
• 40:16
Speaker 19: You said to me, are you gonna put recipes in
• 40:19
Speaker 19: the book? And I said that'll be the next edition.
• 40:25
Speaker 19: And I called Charlie, Charlie Brown, and I said, Charlie,
• 40:30
Speaker 19: we gotta wind this thing up. I'm seventy five, he's
• 40:35
  Speaker 19: eighty five.
• 40:36
Speaker 3: We got to wind it up.
• 40:37
  Speaker 19: We'll do another edition, which we're not. But that's that's
• 40:43
Speaker 19: how you wound it up.
• 40:44
  Speaker 3: You did it.
• 40:45
Speaker 4: Oh, it's all your fault. Okay, of course everything's all
• 40:48
  Speaker 4: it's my fault.
• 40:48
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 40:49
Speaker 4: Talking to for for Charles the Mayor, Danny Jones, all right,
• 40:52
  Speaker 4: I'm gonna.
• 40:53
Speaker 3: There's gonna be some good stories.
• 40:55
  Speaker 4: I can't wait. I can't Are you gonna do an
• 40:57
  Speaker 4: audio version? Two?
• 40:59
Speaker 19: Well, I I talked to Dan that works over at
• 41:04
Speaker 19: the newspaper. He does audio for people, and I asked
• 41:11
Speaker 19: him about it. He says, if I can't do it,
• 41:14
Speaker 19: but what I'd like to do is get the voices
• 41:16
Speaker 19: of the different people. For instance, a guy that I
• 41:21
Speaker 19: worked with in the UH in the filling station, n
• 41:26
Speaker 19: Ined Kurt Vorhees. He's in Huntington, Richard Butler. You'd never
• 41:31
Speaker 19: heard of me. If it hadn't been for Richard Butler,
• 41:34
Speaker 19: nobody would have. And to get him to narrate his
• 41:37
Speaker 19: part and me to narrate my part, and some of
• 41:41
Speaker 19: my parts are pretty saucy.
• 41:46
Speaker 4: So nope, no pun intended. We'll get back to the
• 41:49
Speaker 4: book in the restaurant a little bit. Later on, I do,
• 41:52
Speaker 4: because I already had text about this this morning. I
• 41:54
Speaker 4: do want to get your opinion on this.
• 41:57
  Speaker 16: Uh.
• 41:57
Speaker 4: It was announced over the weekend the governor that West Virginia,
• 42:02
Speaker 4: along with I think it was Ohio and South Carolina,
• 42:04
Speaker 4: are going to be spending sending National Guard troops into
• 42:08
Speaker 4: the nation's capital to help with the crime situation there.
• 42:12
Speaker 4: Crime is down in d C, but no one ever
• 42:15
Speaker 4: wants to let you know the numbers interfere with stories.
• 42:19
Speaker 19: A crime is unique to the victim, right, and they
• 42:22
Speaker 19: have crime in d C and they need help, but
• 42:26
  Speaker 19: not from us.
• 42:27
Speaker 4: They're sending in the National Guard. And I saw I
• 42:31
Speaker 4: read a lot back and forth over this on the weekend.
• 42:33
Speaker 4: People said, well, why is West Virginia going there? And
• 42:35
Speaker 4: somebody rightfully so said, well, you know, it doesn't stop
• 42:39
Speaker 4: at the borders. If there's we send National Guard people
• 42:42
Speaker 4: to help with disasters in different states. I completely understand.
• 42:45
Speaker 4: I completely understand that, But go ahead.
• 42:47
Speaker 3: That is different to.
• 42:52
Speaker 19: Involve ourselves in everyday criminal activity that goes on in
• 42:56
Speaker 19: a district of Columbia.
• 42:58
Speaker 3: What if one gets.
• 43:01
Speaker 4: Well and they're unarmed from what I understand, and they're
• 43:04
Speaker 4: going to be doing a lot of the jobs to
• 43:07
Speaker 4: free up a lot of a law enforcement so they're
• 43:10
Speaker 4: not necessarily going to be standing there with with with
• 43:12
Speaker 4: guns in hand, you know, trying to keep people from
• 43:15
Speaker 4: from the middle crimes. Uh, they're they're unarmed.
• 43:18
Speaker 19: I mean when when I remove the barrels from under
• 43:26
Speaker 19: the buildings, the wooden buildings that people used to go
• 43:30
Speaker 19: sit in, uh in Vietnam, and you take them out
• 43:35
Speaker 19: to the elephant grass and you set them on fire.
• 43:37
Speaker 19: Do you know what I'm talking about? And Uh, I
• 43:41

• 43:47
  Speaker 19: for you.
• 43:47
  Speaker 16: Good.
• 43:47
Speaker 3: Does anybody know what I'm talking about?
• 43:49
  Speaker 4: I got an idea. Text says I think it's a
• 43:52
Speaker 4: disgrace that our governors put in our National Guard in
• 43:54
Speaker 4: the middle of DC and federal government disputes. When people
• 43:57
Speaker 4: in the flooded areas need help before winter comes, they
• 43:59
Speaker 4: can't get help from the state. It's ridiculous, says a texture.
• 44:02
Speaker 19: I think the National Guard's mission has changed. It's just
• 44:07
Speaker 19: and putting the Marines in DC are in Los Angeles,
• 44:15
Speaker 19: you know, I know where they train, you know where
• 44:17
Speaker 19: they train, Steal Beach, my town. I'll be there over
• 44:23
  Speaker 19: Memorial Day weekend.
• 44:25
  Speaker 3: Labor.
• 44:27
Speaker 19: That's my city, Steal Beach, that's where they have a
• 44:30
Speaker 19: Navy installation there, and that's where the Marines were training.
• 44:34
Speaker 4: So overall, and we'll do this and good break. You're
• 44:36
Speaker 4: not a fan of what the governor announced over the weekend, you.
• 44:39
Speaker 3: Know what, I'm not going to sit here and criticize him.
• 44:42
  Speaker 19: I don't know what he knows. I don't like it,
• 44:45
Speaker 19: but I'm not gonna. I mean, I'm not gonna wear out.
• 44:51
  Speaker 19: It's not a bridge I want to burn, right, I
