- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. In episode 5, I shared my
- 0:34medication journey over the past 15 years and the response was
- 0:38incredible. But one of the most common
- 0:40questions I got was this. What else do you take alongside
- 0:43your Parkinson's meds? Supplements.
- 0:46So today, I'm going to share the five things that I take with my
- 0:48Parkinson's medication that have actually helped me and stick
- 0:51around to the very end because I'm going to share the one thing
- 0:54that I regret that I didn't start sooner.
- 0:56And surprisingly, it has nothing to do with supplements.
- 0:59It's, it's been a game changer for me.
- 1:01But just a quick disclaimer, what works for me may not work
- 1:04for you. I'm not a doctor and this is my
- 1:06personal experience. But for you, add anything to
- 1:08your routine. Always check with your doctor to
- 1:10make sure it's right for you. All I know is that, you know,
- 1:13I've been dealing with this for 15 years and I was on a slow
- 1:17pass. This I, I got my meds straight
- 1:19and I got everything figured out.
- 1:20So it took me a little while to start adding the things in, but
- 1:23the very first thing I added in was vitamin D3.
- 1:27So it's a brain, brain and bone booster and it plays a like a
- 1:31place, a critical role in bone strength and immune functions
- 1:34and brain health. And many people with Parkinson's
- 1:36are low in vitamin D and study suggests that low vitamin D
- 1:39levels may be linked to higher risk of newer neurodegenerative
- 1:43diseases. It also helps with bone density,
- 1:46which is really important because as you know, Parkinson's
- 1:49can increase the risk of falls and fractures.
- 1:51So I personally take 25 IE D's. So I'm going to show you this
- 1:56here. It's this is what I'm taking.
- 1:58I don't know if you can see it. Well, this is what this is the
- 2:00one I'm taking right now. So I take one of these a day,
- 2:05one of these a day. And, and really you should
- 2:08really get your levels checked with your doctor and discuss it
- 2:10first. But this is what I'm done.
- 2:12And what I do is you have to take this with a meal as well.
- 2:14So I take this with my dinner, the biggest meal of the day.
- 2:18And so far so good. I really I really like kind of
- 2:23what it's doing for me. I like the effects of it.
- 2:26Again, I'm taking a 2500. I'll I'll link the all of the
- 2:29things I talked about today. I'll put a link in the
- 2:31description below the exact same ones that I'm using.
- 2:34So anyway, it's more than that preventative thing for me with
- 2:36the vitamin D3, but I also feel like I don't get that brain fog
- 2:40as much like I don't it kind of oops.
- 2:42It helps. It helps clear that brain fog
- 2:44for me. So for me it's been it's been
- 2:46really, really important. The next thing that I take is
- 2:51vitamin B12. So this is an energy and a
- 2:54brain, a brain fog fighter. So vitamin B12 is essential,
- 3:00right, for nerve health, brain function and energy levels.
- 3:02And one of the big problems for people with Parkinson's is some
- 3:05of the medications can actually lower your B12 levels.
- 3:09And when you lower that, you're lower your fatigue, sorry, lower
- 3:12your fatigue. When those are lowered, you're
- 3:15more sustainable to fatigue the brain fog, numbness or tingling
- 3:20in the hands and feet, which I I've dealt with all of those,
- 3:23but especially the numbness. And I noticed a huge improvement
- 3:26in my energy and my mental clarity when I added B12 to the
- 3:30routine. So I take with these, I take
- 3:361000 MC GS of of this B12 and I take it daily and I'll show you
- 3:42the one I'm using right here and I hopefully can see it.
- 3:44OK, This is one that I've got. There it is.
- 3:47That's the one I got. Again, a link in the
- 3:48description. And what I did though, is on
- 3:51this one I'm using the one that is, it's a, it melts in your
- 3:57mouth, right? It, it just, it's a rapid, rapid
- 4:00release. And I put it under my tongue and
- 4:04it, it's very first thing in the morning.
- 4:06So I wake up, I take my, my Parkinson's meds and I put one
- 4:12of these under my tongue. And you can do that with the,
- 4:15with the ones that are the, the, the, the fast release ones or
- 4:19the quick dissolving ones. I should say, if you're going to
- 4:22take non quick dissolving ones, you're going to take a pill,
- 4:25then it's recommended to do it like an hour before or after
- 4:29your Parkinson's medication. So I went with these ones
- 4:32because I have enough trouble remembering how much and when
- 4:36and where and when to take this and when I ate and all that kind
- 4:38of stuff. So for me, it's really, really
- 4:42simple. I just stick it under my tongue.
- 4:44I take it first thing in the morning.
- 4:45I know it's done and and these are not expensive supplements.
- 4:49So this one though too, again, energy levels, I feel higher my
- 4:54brain fog again with the brain fog and just more clarity to it.
- 4:58So that's been really, really, really, really, really good for
- 5:02me. So I would really recommend that
- 5:04for sure. And then vitamin E Vitamin E is
- 5:10an antioxidant and it's for brain protection.
- 5:13Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect
- 5:16brain cells from oxidative stress and inflammation.
- 5:19Oxidative stress is that key factor in Parkinson's disease
- 5:22progression. And some research suggests that
- 5:24antioxidants like vitamin E can help slow that cell damage.
- 5:29And it also supports immune health and skin repair.
- 5:31So it's good for overall Wellness.
- 5:34So I'm taking about 400 i.e. S i.e.
- 5:36I never said this right. 400 ius of vitamin E per day.
- 5:40But with this one, you don't want to overdo it.
- 5:43High doses of vitamin E can increase the risk of bleeding
- 5:46and different things like that. So always check with the doctor
- 5:49before you take it Again, I'll put a link in the description
- 5:52below, but that's been been amazingly helpful to me as well.
- 5:58The fourth thing, the fourth thing that, that, that, and I'm
- 6:01going to throw this one in here and I'm going to kind of throw
- 6:03this at, at it's kind of a, a, a win and not a win, if this makes
- 6:08sense. So the, the 4th supplement that
- 6:10I added to my routine is melatonin.
- 6:14So melatonin is a sleep regulator.
- 6:16And then I'm going to say for some people, so sleep problems
- 6:19are sleep problems are the worst, right?
- 6:22They're the one of the worst symptoms of Parkinson's.
- 6:24And since Parkinson's effects natural melatonin production,
- 6:28many people take melatonin to help regulate their sleep cycle.
- 6:31So melatonin is like a hormone. It's a hormone that your body
- 6:36naturally produces and it produces it to signal that it's
- 6:39time to sleep. With Parkinson's, those signals
- 6:41get disrupted. Now for me personally, melatonin
- 6:44really helped me fall asleep. Like I would literally take it,
- 6:49I take, you know, one or two pills of melatonin every, every
- 6:53night And it, it knocked me out. My problem was I, I, I felt
- 6:58really, really groggy in the morning.
- 7:00Like I was, it was really, really difficult for me.
- 7:02And mornings are again, mornings are hard enough for me that I
- 7:05didn't need to add in something else that was going to stress me
- 7:08out or make my mornings harder. So it was making me really
- 7:11groggy. And, you know, that said, many
- 7:14people swear by it. And so if you struggle, if you
- 7:16struggle falling asleep or staying asleep, melatonin may be
- 7:20worth trying. And again, for me, it really,
- 7:23really helps. Now, I still have melatonin in
- 7:26my house. I still have it here.
- 7:27And if I've gone through three or four days where I'm just
- 7:30can't sleep, I will take it. I mean, I will take it just to
- 7:34get that good night's sleep. So a common starting dose, I
- 7:37started on one milligram of melatonin and I went up to about
- 7:393. I tried to cut down to two for
- 7:42the grogginess, but again, it didn't seem, it didn't seem to
- 7:45matter if I took 1-2 or three. Maybe just something in my body
- 7:48that that it regulated with. But that right, the right dose
- 7:51depends on how your body responds.
- 7:54So if you want to try melatonin, I've also linked the description
- 7:59link to description. I've linked to the one that I
- 8:02take in the description below. Just again, I just want you to
- 8:04see the first hand, the one that I use, the one that I could say
- 8:07that I would vote for. And the one thing that I just
- 8:10want to make sure you understand where it is.
- 8:11Sometimes it's easier just to to click and go rather Google,
- 8:14Google, Google. I'll also say with the
- 8:17melatonin, you can take like a gummy bear or you can take the
- 8:20the a fast release pill. But one thing I found is that it
- 8:26might take a couple days to kick in and start working.
- 8:28It seems to work best like it stays in your system.
- 8:31So I would experiment with that one.
- 8:33My doctor actually is one that recommended that to me and it's
- 8:36just over the counter. So make sure you you can try
- 8:39that. If you're trouble sleeping, I
- 8:40promise you, take it. It's natural.
- 8:42You don't, it's not like you're taking a sleeping pill just to
- 8:44fall asleep. And now you know.
- 8:47So those are the my supplements that I take, right?
- 8:50So, so the vitamin D, the vitamin B12, the vitamin E.
- 8:56The other thing that I want to share though, is I've got this
- 8:58incredible vitamin E. No, it's not vitamin E.
- 9:03It's a magnesium spray. Now I feel kind of silly sharing
- 9:07this with my wife got this for me.
- 9:08She read about it, she tried she, she got it for me.
- 9:11And to me this has been just amazing.
- 9:13So I'm actually going to show you 2 game changers.
- 9:15I'm going to, I'm going to throw it up here and show you what it
- 9:17looks like. So this is it.
- 9:18It's a magnesium spray, OK, It's a magnesium spray.
- 9:22And what that does what I do is every night when I'm going, when
- 9:25I'm just when I'm going to sleep, I spray the bottom of my
- 9:28feet and I rub my feet together. So I spray this on the bottom of
- 9:31my feet. I rub my feet together and I
- 9:32spray my calves and a little bit of my legs and understand, OK,
- 9:40this is someone who never took pills, that didn't believe in
- 9:42any hokey's pokey. I just, you know, I just did my
- 9:45did my thing. So for me, when she first
- 9:48brought this to me, I'm like, I'm not spraying my feet at
- 9:50night. What in the world is that going
- 9:52to do? Oh my gosh.
- 9:53I'll tell you what it does. It relaxes me.
- 9:56It relaxes my muscles. It's incredible, absolutely
- 10:02incredible. And I know the nights that I
- 10:05don't do it or I forget to do it, I don't sleep as well.
- 10:08So this comes in a 2 pack on Amazon and again, I'll I'll link
- 10:13that description, but I honestly, if you're again
- 10:15trouble sleeping the melatonin, it works for me.
- 10:17It didn't work. I've switched this magnesium
- 10:19spray and Oh my word, I'm telling you, it's amazing.
- 10:23And so that was like my my first game changer.
- 10:26My second one again, it to me super surprising, not a
- 10:29supplement, not a vitamin, nothing like that.
- 10:33So it's the one thing I actually regret that I didn't start
- 10:36sooner and this is what I got. Well, actually, I'll tell you
- 10:39what. Well, I'll tell you what it is.
- 10:41So anyway, most people, they focus on what to do at night to
- 10:44sleep better, right? But what?
- 10:47But what if the real answer to that is actually how you wake
- 10:49up? OK, I started using a light
- 10:53therapy wake up alarm and I couldn't believe how much I
- 10:56sleep better at night. The alarm, it mimics the natural
- 10:59sunlight and it helps your body wake up more gently.
- 11:02And by resetting my body clock in the morning, it actually made
- 11:05it easier to fall asleep at night.
- 11:07You know it's like this, your body has an internal clock,
- 11:10right? A wake up time and go to sleep
- 11:12time. A wake up time and go to sleep
- 11:13time. You know, I used to wake up
- 11:14groggy. I was feeling like I barely
- 11:16slept, but now I wake up, I'm more refreshed and my sleep at
- 11:20night is deeper too. So it helps you reset that cycle
- 11:24that go to sleep, wake up cycle. I'll show you what it looks
- 11:26like. It's pretty cool.
- 11:28It's like a it's like a little oh, jeez, look at that.
- 11:31So if you touch the sides or the top, it comes on.
- 11:33Sorry, comes out very bright. So I'm going to try it comes out
- 11:36really bright. So I'm going to show you in the
- 11:38in the camera what it looks like.
- 11:39So this is my my alarm clock. Oh, Gee, was I'm so sorry.
- 11:42This is live to tape, so screw me up here.
- 11:45OK, I'm going to try to shut it off.
- 11:46I'm going to unplug it, OK, because I because this is
- 11:49really, really cool and it's really neat and it's really
- 11:51important. So this is what it looks like It
- 11:53sits on it sits on my side table of my bed.
- 11:55OK, It's very small and it's an alarm clock.
- 11:57So I set the alarm and what it does is I set it for, you know,
- 12:01whatever time, let's say I want to wake up at 7:30.
- 12:03So I set it for 7:00 and it starts to mimic the sun at 7:00.
- 12:07It comes on very, very, very dim, very dim.
- 12:11And then slowly for that half an hour, it gets a little brighter
- 12:14and a little brighter and a little brighter and a little
- 12:16brighter. By 7:30, it's like the sunlight
- 12:19is just kissing my cheeks. Sounds like a commercial, but
- 12:23I've done that. And again, these are the last
- 12:25two things I'm telling you. I, I was like, man, I'm not
- 12:27doing that, but unbelievable. It's unbelievable.
- 12:31I, I promise those, those two things to me are just like game
- 12:34changers. So again, I've linked that exact
- 12:37light that I got. I've got that on Amazon.
- 12:39I've linked it in in the description or you as well.
- 12:43So I know first hand, right, 15 years into this thing, I know
- 12:47how frustrating Parkinson's symptoms can be.
- 12:49And these are just some of the things that have helped me.
- 12:51So if you've tried any of these or if you take something else,
- 12:54some other supplements that help you, drop it in the drop it in
