- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, everybody. This is Gil and this is everything
- 0:02Speaker 1: we know about the growing case against Ditty, the music mogul.
- 0:05Speaker 1: It's been more than a week since the arrest of
- 0:07Speaker 1: music mogul and rapper Sean Ditty Combs on a litany
- 0:10Speaker 1: of federal charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, but
- 0:15Speaker 1: the questions surrounding the allegations have only grown in recent days.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Which of Combs's many celebrity friends heard about the alleged
- 0:22Speaker 1: freak offs, What, if anything, did his former romantic partners,
- 0:25Speaker 1: including Jennifer Lopez know? If there are tapes, what's on them?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Why do people keep talking about Justin Bieber. I can
- 0:32Speaker 1: promise you that jay Z, Beyonce, j Low, and many
- 0:35Speaker 1: other new and participated in this events and abused many people.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It's not a stretch to draw parallels between Combs's case
- 0:42Speaker 1: and that of notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Copious amounts
- 0:46Speaker 1: of money, a long list of powerful friends, and a
- 0:49Speaker 1: culture of celebrity silence make for a potent combination that,
- 0:52Speaker 1: as Anna has written, is tailor made to produce conspiracy theories.
- 0:56Speaker 1: In the wake of the arrest, amateur internet sleuths have
- 1:00Speaker 1: surfaced numerous videos and photos and poured over interviews with
- 1:03Speaker 1: Ditty and his celebrity associates in search of answers. Meanwhile,
- 1:07Speaker 1: the allegations against Combs continued to pile up after several
- 1:11Speaker 1: civil lawsuits were filed against Comb's late last year. Another
- 1:15Speaker 1: woman came forward this week to allege in a twenty
- 1:18Speaker 1: six page civil suit that Combs, in his bodyguard, took
- 1:20Speaker 1: her to the recording studio for his record label Bad
- 1:23Speaker 1: Boy in two thousand and one, raped her repeatedly, and
- 1:28Speaker 1: recorded the assault. Through his lawyers, Ditty has repeatedly asserted
- 1:32Speaker 1: that the civil claims against him are baseless, calling several
- 1:36Speaker 1: of them sickening allegations made by individuals looking for a
- 1:40Speaker 1: quick payday. He is pleaded not guilty in the criminal
- 1:43Speaker 1: case too, and is currently being held in a Brooklyn
- 1:46Speaker 1: jail after twice being denied bail. His lawyer, marc Agnifilo
- 1:50Speaker 1: has said, the rapper is going to fight this with
- 1:52Speaker 1: all of his energy, in all of his might, and
- 1:55Speaker 1: during a court hearing, argued that the so called freakofs
- 1:58Speaker 1: Marathon sexual production that prosecutors say involved hired sex workers
- 2:03Speaker 1: and women coerced to perform sexual acts for the gratification
- 2:06Speaker 1: of Combs and others were consensual if unconventional? Is it
- 2:10Speaker 1: sex trafficking? He asked in court last week. No, not
- 2:14Speaker 1: if everybody wants to be there. With so many players,
- 2:17Speaker 1: civil and criminal cases and plenty of misinformation floating around,
- 2:22Speaker 1: we're pulling together some of the most frequently asked questions
- 2:24Speaker 1: about Ditty and trying to answer them as best we can,
- 2:28Speaker 1: of course, given what we know. So here it is
- 2:30Speaker 1: what is Comb's accused of. Combs is facing two kinds
- 2:33Speaker 1: of cases, one criminal case brought by the federal government
- 2:37Speaker 1: and several civil cases brought by individuals, each involving different accusations.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Combs was arrested on criminal charges. The government alleges that
- 2:45Speaker 1: he used his business enterprise to conduct criminal activity, including
- 2:50Speaker 1: sex trafficking and kidnapping, and then used his power to
- 2:53Speaker 1: intimidate victims and cover up the crimes. The case centers
- 2:56Speaker 1: on the alleged performances with women and sex workers. The
- 3:00Speaker 1: indictment alleges that Ditty often transported sex workers to perform
- 3:03Speaker 1: in the sessions and taped the encounters to coerce silence
- 3:06Speaker 1: from participants, using an array of employees and his business
- 3:10Speaker 1: organization to facilitate the criminal activity. For all of this,
- 3:14Speaker 1: they've charged Combs with racketeering conspiracy RICO, a powerful charge
- 3:18Speaker 1: that was originally used largely to prosecute organized crime leaders
- 3:22Speaker 1: and can result in a hefty sentence. It was the
- 3:25Speaker 1: civil cases, however, that opened the floodgates that ultimately led
- 3:28Speaker 1: to the indictment. In other words, Ditty should have never
- 3:32Speaker 1: settled the case against Cassie. He should have put her
- 3:34Speaker 1: on payroll and kept paying her. In November twenty twenty three,
- 3:38Speaker 1: Combs's ex girlfriend, Cassandra Ventura, also known as the singer Cassie,
- 3:44Speaker 1: filed the first explosive lawsuit that exposed several allegations against
- 3:48Speaker 1: Combs to the public, including that the rapper orchestrated the
- 3:51Speaker 1: performances with sex workers and forced her to participate. Though
- 3:55Speaker 1: she filed a civil case, which was settled by Combs
- 3:58Speaker 1: within one day, Herraa's allegations appeared to be the central
- 4:02Speaker 1: foundation of the federal criminal case against Combs. If so
- 4:06Speaker 1: many people were involved, why did it take so long
- 4:09Speaker 1: for the allegations to come out. Combs was incredibly powerful
- 4:12Speaker 1: in the music industry, and in American culture more generally,
- 4:16Speaker 1: he was one of the first people to blend the
- 4:18Speaker 1: worlds of hip hop, business and luxury. His fashion label,
- 4:21Speaker 1: Sean John, founded in nineteen ninety eight, became known for
- 4:24Speaker 1: high end menswear. He promoted brands of vodka and tequila,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and hosted exclusive white parties in the Hamptons with guests
- 4:31Speaker 1: like Martha Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, and Jay Z.
- 4:36Speaker 1: It's difficult for people to speak out about sexual assault
- 4:39Speaker 1: under any circumstances, and doubly difficult when the alleged perpetrator
- 4:43Speaker 1: is someone wealthy and well connected who may have influence
- 4:47Speaker 1: over their careers. Combs is also accused of running an
- 4:49Speaker 1: enormous criminal enterprise that threatened women with blackmail and violence,
- 4:54Speaker 1: including using firearms to threaten victims, all of which would
- 4:57Speaker 1: have made it even more difficult for anyone to got
- 5:00Speaker 1: come forward. What's on the tapes mentioned in the indictment?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Will they ever come out? Several of the accusers and
- 5:06Speaker 1: the criminal indictment alleged that ditty videotape sexual assaults and
- 5:10Speaker 1: the performances with sex workers. The accuser this week alleges
- 5:14Speaker 1: that a tape made of her sexual assault was sold
- 5:16Speaker 1: and viewed by several other men. You can rest assured
- 5:19Speaker 1: that Ditty is not built for jail life. He will
- 5:21Speaker 1: throw everyone under the bus. Generally, accusers have said any
- 5:25Speaker 1: tape served as a way to insure their silence. In court,
- 5:28Speaker 1: The New York Times reported, prosecutors presented a statement from
- 5:32Speaker 1: one who said he just threatened me about my sex
- 5:35Speaker 1: tapes that he has of me on two phones. He
- 5:37Speaker 1: said he would expose me. Mind you, these sex tapes
- 5:39Speaker 1: where I am heavily drugged. Now here's the craziest part
- 5:42Speaker 1: to me. His obsession with baby oil. Why is everyone
- 5:46Speaker 1: talking about baby oil? Is this real? One of the
- 5:49Speaker 1: odder details in the Comb's indictment is that authorities say
- 5:52Speaker 1: they seized more than one thousand bottles of baby oil
- 5:55Speaker 1: and lubricant in searches of the Mogul's residences in Miami
- 5:59Speaker 1: and Los Angeles earlier this year. Prosecutors say the oil
- 6:02Speaker 1: was meant for the performances, and Ventura also said in
- 6:05Speaker 1: her lawsuit that she was told to pour excessive amounts
- 6:08Speaker 1: of oil on herself at these events. Possessing baby oil
- 6:12Speaker 1: is not a crime, and the whole oil issue doesn't
- 6:15Speaker 1: matter very much in the context of the violent and
- 6:17Speaker 1: disturbing conduct of which Combs has been accused, But a
- 6:20Speaker 1: federal indictment of a public figure like Combs is meant
- 6:23Speaker 1: to be read, and it's not unusual for prosecutors to
- 6:26Speaker 1: include details they know will shock people and make headlines
- 6:30Speaker 1: Baby Oil did the trick? Are other celebrities connected to
- 6:33Speaker 1: the case. It's important to note that no other person,
- 6:36Speaker 1: celebrity or not, has been indicted alongside Combs in the
- 6:39Speaker 1: criminal case. The civil cases do not mention any other
- 6:42Speaker 1: celebrities either, accusing only Combs and occasionally those employed by him.
- 6:47Speaker 1: But if there are videos, they will be exposed. We've
- 6:50Speaker 1: seen the video of Kevin Hart. We will see other
- 6:52Speaker 1: videos of actors, rappers, politicians, and pastors. I promise you
- 6:56Speaker 1: that that said, this is an incredibly tough one question,
- 7:01Speaker 1: tending to spark more rumor and innuendo than uncover any
- 7:04Speaker 1: truths as onlookers try to determine who knew what when. Indeed,
- 7:08Speaker 1: Combs had many friends in high places, but pursuing the
- 7:11Speaker 1: question tends to spawn misinformation. Like a viral song about
- 7:15Speaker 1: a ditty party attributed to Justin Bieber that experts now
- 7:18Speaker 1: say was likely created by AI, and the song and
- 7:21Speaker 1: video are funny as hell. If you haven't seen it,
- 7:25Speaker 1: search for it and let me know what you think
- 7:26Speaker 1: about it. So far, a few bold faced names who
- 7:29Speaker 1: were on the guest lists at Combs's celeb packed white
- 7:31Speaker 1: parties have come forward to say they were in no
- 7:34Speaker 1: way connected to any of the crimes Combs is accused of.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But it's best if we all give the conspiracy theories
- 7:40Speaker 1: a rest and let the case be handled in court.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Wild speculation is only liable to exacerbate the victim's pain.
- 7:46Speaker 1: What will happen to Combs's businesses and brands now. In
- 7:50Speaker 1: the weeks before Ventura's lawsuit went public last November, Ditty
- 7:54Speaker 1: made several media grabbing moves, including donating one million dollars
- 7:58Speaker 1: to Howard University perform and collecting a Global Icon Award
- 8:02Speaker 1: at the VMAs, and throwing a high profile birthday party
- 8:05Speaker 1: for himself in London with Naomi Campbell and Idris Elba
- 8:08Speaker 1: among the guests. So much has since crumbled, not the
- 8:13Speaker 1: least of which is his business Empire Diageo, the beverage
- 8:17Speaker 1: brand with which Combs once partnered on Vodka and Tequila
- 8:21Speaker 1: quickly removed his image from its website, and the partnership
- 8:24Speaker 1: broke ties after settling a lawsuit over another matter this January.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Capital Preparatory Schools, a New York charter school network Combs
- 8:33Speaker 1: helped expand posted a statement on the school's website last
- 8:36Speaker 1: fall saying it was cutting ties with him, though the
- 8:39Speaker 1: statement was later removed. Combs also stepped aside as chair
- 8:43Speaker 1: of Revolt, a TV network he helped start in twenty thirteen,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and then officially sold his stake this summer, and Shawn
- 8:50Speaker 1: John's website, according to The Daily Beast, was taken down.
- 8:53Speaker 1: According to New York Magazine, he also no longer has
- 8:56Speaker 1: a dedicated Sean Diddy Coombe's day in Miami, returned his
- 8:59Speaker 1: key to New York City and had his planned Hulu
- 9:02Speaker 1: show iced. As for Howard, his alma mater, it returned
- 9:06Speaker 1: the million dollar gift. If did he is convicted, how
- 9:09Speaker 1: long could he be in prison? There's no guarantee that
- 9:12Speaker 1: Combs's case will go to trial or that he'll be convicted.
- 9:15Speaker 1: If he does so. At this point, it's impossible to
- 9:17Speaker 1: guess the outcome, but the Department of Justice has issued
- 9:20Speaker 1: a list of the charges against Comb's and what each
- 9:22Speaker 1: could mean if he's convicted. Unsurprisingly, the maximum sentences range,
- 9:28Speaker 1: with a transportation for purposes of prostitution charge bringing a
- 9:31Speaker 1: potential ten year sentence, and that racketeering conspiracy charge meaning
- 9:36Speaker 1: Combs could face life in prison.
