- 0:00You know, at this point in my life, I'm not a huge NFL fan
- 0:02anymore. I kind of watch it more through
- 0:05fantasy football. Like I had a good fantasy
- 0:07football year, so I was more into it.
- 0:08But I'm like all the way into the College Football Playoff.
- 0:12So for you right now, are you more into the NFL or college or
- 0:16is this a different year? Because so folks know you are a
- 0:19Penn State grad, correct? So you have a huge game tonight.
- 0:23And by the way, let's let people know.
- 0:26So this game is 630 central time, I believe.
- 0:30I just looked at the line. OK, 6:30 central time.
- 0:35So we have obviously Penn State Notre Dame on ESPN.
- 0:39Notre Dame is a one point favorite.
- 0:42The total is 44 1/2. And I saw an axe before we
- 0:46started. Apparently the flu bug is going
- 0:49through Notre Dame's locker room, but it looks like it's not
- 0:53with a lot of starters. It says like a lot of backups
- 0:55and a lot of special teamers, right?
- 0:58I mean I don't want anyone to get sick like long term but
- 1:01maybe just for a 24 hour bug. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:05Here you go. Let me let me find it for you.
- 1:07Here. Here's the here's the tweet I
- 1:09saw. OK, This is from Tyler Horka.
- 1:12He covers Notre Dame for on three sports.
- 1:15He says an hour ago been told the flu is going around the
- 1:18Notre Dame locker room. Those who have it have it bad.
- 1:22But it sounds like that's mostly backups and special teams
- 1:25players. Still something to monitor for
- 1:27the Fighting Irish going into the Orange Bowl versus Penn
- 1:30State tonight. What do you think, James
- 1:33Franklin? Your boys, they going to get it
- 1:34done or what? Well, Franklin's history would
- 1:37tell you probably not. I mean, he, as you know, is Ohio
- 1:40State fan. Penn State and under Franklin
- 1:42has been great against everybody except Ohio State and Michigan,
- 1:46which happened to be the two biggest games that Penn State
- 1:48has, although they don't now. They don't play Michigan every
- 1:50year. They did not play them this
- 1:52year, but I think it's hard for Franklin won two playoff games.
- 1:58Let's give him some credit, but they were against teams that
- 2:01Penn State should have beat. We the college, everyone knows
- 2:04that the the playoff seeding this year was janky.
- 2:06It will change next year. I assume they will not give
- 2:10automatic bids to the all to the first top 4 seeds to conference
- 2:13champions. That distorted the whole thing.
- 2:15It made Penn State the what did they end up being the five seed?
- 2:19No, I'm sorry, the six seed where they should have been the
- 2:21four. So they got to play two games
- 2:23against teams where they were big favors.
- 2:25I think they were double digit favorites in both of their first
- 2:27round games. So based on his track record,
- 2:30probably not, but this would be that kind of look.
- 2:32This would be that program defining win at Franklin.
- 2:35It's kind of like Ryan Day in Ohio State with you.
- 2:37Like Franklins had a if you look at his record, you can't fire
- 2:40the guy. I mean, he's been very
- 2:42successful, but he has hit a ceiling that is clear and
- 2:46obvious. And this would be a breakthrough
- 2:48for that. If you get, if you win a third
- 2:50playoff game, beating A-Team now that you are a slight underdog
- 2:53against, I think Notre Dame's A2 point favorite point and a half,
- 2:56two points that and get to the freaking College Football
- 3:00Playoff championship, probably to lose to Ohio State again.
- 3:03I think that is a hell of a nice season.
- 3:06And that would be something that I think Penn State fans could
- 3:09get behind and say, OK, we still can't beat Ohio State, assuming
- 3:12the Ohio State beats Texas and and then beats Penn State.
- 3:15But at least we broke through and beat a pretty damn good
- 3:18Notre Dame team and had a nice run 1 three playoff games got to
- 3:21the college football championship.
- 3:23So I would take that. You asked me about my NFL versus
- 3:26college. My first love way before I went
- 3:30to college was the Steelers. My dad was a huge Steeler fan
- 3:33and this was during the cower era when he got there and they
- 3:37were good and they they got to the Super Bowl of the mid 90s
- 3:41against the Cowboys. So that cemented my love for the
- 3:43Steelers. And I think, I think you and I
- 3:46talked about this before as I've gotten older, to be honest with
- 3:48you, I still love sports, but I, I used to have a favorite team
- 3:52and sometimes 2 that I followed in like every major sport and I
- 3:56would watch all their like, I, I, for some reason, as a very,
- 3:59very middle class kid growing up in central Pennsylvania, fell in
- 4:03love with Duke basketball. It was after they beat UNLV.
- 4:07Do you remember that UNLV was undefeated?
- 4:09I think it was 90 or 91. That was Larry Johnson and
- 4:13Stacey Augman. Greg Anthony, they were.
- 4:16Greg Anthony. Yep, Yep.
- 4:19I think all five of their starters ended up playing in the
- 4:21NBAI mean, they were unbelievable.
- 4:23They were a huge favorite. It was like 20 points in the
- 4:26Final Four and Duke beat them. And then the next year is when
- 4:30Leitner hit the shot against Kentucky and I was watching that
- 4:33live and I that's meant to me. So I'm watching all these Duke
- 4:37games. There's a middle class kid who
- 4:39didn't really, you know, take high school as serious as I
- 4:42should have. Like there was no chance I was
- 4:44going to Duke. I didn't realize that I probably
- 4:47would have hated the kids who want the Duke, these elitist,
- 4:50you know, nerd snobs, right? But I that my point is, I was a
- 4:54huge that has all fallen on the wayside.
- 4:57The only thing I really care about now are the Steelers and
- 4:59and Penn State when they're good.
- 5:01So I'm more of an NFL guy. But I will say I don't know if
- 5:05this is true for you. I have watched more college
- 5:07football this year than I have in probably at least a decade
- 5:10because of the playoff. I think having that expanded
- 5:14playoff, having stakes for more games has really like, even
- 5:19though the seating is screwed up and a lot of the games have been
- 5:21blowouts, in fact, all but one have been blowouts.
- 5:24I think this College Football Playoff at 12 teams has been a
- 5:28tremendous success for the sport.
- 5:31And once they make some tweaks to it, I think it's gonna be
- 5:34it's gonna be great for college football.
- 5:38Yeah, I've always been a more, much more college football fan
- 5:42than NFL growing up in Toledo. So you had the Lions, who
- 5:46they're they're OK. They're like always 9:00 and
- 5:487:00. But they had Barry Sanders
- 5:50growing up, but they never did much in the playoffs.
- 5:52Then you had the Browns. My uncle was a big Browns fan
- 5:54and the Browns went away. I've always loved Ohio State
- 5:58football. It's really, it's really the
- 5:59only team I care about at all at this point in my life.
- 6:04And I've always said this, and I know other people will will say,
- 6:08oh, we don't feel sorry for Ohio State fans.
- 6:09But in a weird way, Ohio State has been so good my entire
- 6:14lifetime that there's not a lot of exciting games, right?
- 6:17Like if you just look at the schedule seriously, and I know
- 6:20people say, Oh, you can't complain about that, but like,
- 6:22I'm kind of busy now and I got stuff to do and I have kids, so
- 6:26I'm probably not going to watch them play Purdue and and maybe
- 6:29they lose to Purdue every once in a while.
- 6:30They lost to Purdue several years ago.
- 6:32But like when I look at the schedule, I'm like, OK, you
- 6:34know, when Michigan game is like Penn State, OK, there's usually
- 6:38one good non conference game. Usually that wasn't really the
- 6:42case this year kind of out of nowhere.
- 6:45Indiana was good this year. So that was a game and they had
- 6:48no, I'm sorry, they had Oregon this year.
- 6:49What am I talking about? OK, Oregon, Yeah.
- 6:52That. Was a great game.
- 6:54Oregon is a well, Oregon's a conference game.
- 6:56I was thinking like, wait, they played Oregon.
- 6:58You forget that Oregon is now in the freaking Big 10.
- 7:01So anyway, just right there, What is that four or five games
- 7:04that on paper you're looking at? Like I'm into that game.
- 7:07They actually played Nebraska close a game I didn't even
- 7:09watch. But I agree with you.
- 7:11I think the best thing about the College Football Playoff
- 7:14expanding, even though the games for the most part have sucked
- 7:18and I think that will improve when you get rid of the auto
- 7:21buys and you have normal seating.
- 7:24But to me, the last right, the last 10 years, there's only been
- 7:283 interesting games in the playoffs every year and it's the
- 7:31College Football Playoff games, it's the two semifinals and it's
- 7:34the championship game. I used to like bowl games.
- 7:36I used to care about bowl games, but ever since the players
- 7:40started opting out and then you had the transfer portal, I'm
- 7:43sorry, like I got in this big argument.
- 7:45It was it was half fun with Mizzou fans last year because
- 7:47they played Ohio State. But I'm sorry, if you're a big
- 7:50time program from the Big 10 or the SEC, if you don't make the
- 7:54College Football Playoff, your season is essentially over at
- 7:58that point. And a lot of it's luck at that
- 8:00point, like if you have a young team, a bunch of freshmen,
- 8:03sophomores, well, they might play, but you may play another
- 8:05team. They have a bunch of NFL guys or
- 8:08half their teams in the portal. So again, like if you're playing
- 8:10one of these bowl games, you want to win, don't get me wrong.
- 8:14But like anybody trying to tell me that's a real indication of
- 8:17that year's team. If you have 5 dudes sitting out
- 8:20for the NFL, you have 8 dudes in the portal, right?
- 8:23You got a couple people who are kind of banged up, so they're
- 8:26not going to play, but they would if the game mattered,
- 8:29like, I'm sorry. So that's where the College
- 8:31Football Playoff is great because they added like, what,
- 8:3412 games Now? You have a whole month, you have
- 8:38a whole month's worth of games to look forward to, four rounds
- 8:41of playoffs to look forward to these games.
- 8:43That to me is what's great. And the games are going to
- 8:45improve. This has been a weird year I
- 8:46think. Yeah, they'll they'll make the
- 8:48obvious correction, which is eliminate the automatic top 4
- 8:53seeds being conference champions.
- 8:54Although I hope they keep the conference champions getting in
- 8:57because Arizona State is a good example.
- 9:00I don't think they would have made it right if it were if it
- 9:02were just 12 teams with no automatic bid.
- 9:04And look what they did against Texas.
- 9:06I mean, that was the game so far.
- 9:09I do think it is important to some degree that these these two
- 9:13games and the championship be competitive.
- 9:16I mean, I think that would be nice after we've seen
- 9:19essentially 7 of the 8 games were more than one score that
- 9:22have been decided so far. But in terms of getting like,
- 9:25think about these iconic programs, Penn State, Notre
- 9:27Dame, Ohio State and Texas. The, the, the tradition, the
- 9:31history, having them play in games with this kind of stakes,
- 9:33the playoffs been a huge success, even with the blowouts
- 9:36and, and part of the two is the regular season.
- 9:39I, there were so many more games late in in the year that I cuz
- 9:44on Saturdays I flip around, I'm watching my son, I'm doing other
- 9:46things. But normally I would have never
- 9:48paid these games any attention. But because one or both of the
- 9:52teams had a chance at the playoff, I watched 5-10 minutes
- 9:55of the game that I would have never even thought about in
- 9:58years past. That is what the playoff can do.
- 10:00College football's got to tweak the playoff a little bit.
- 10:02They have to. I think college football needs
- 10:05to standardize. Obviously, the big one is NIL.
- 10:07They have to figure that out. There has to be some type of
- 10:10structure around that because the playing field is so unequal
- 10:13and so chaotic right now. And also maybe tweak the
- 10:16transfer portal. I think it's twice a year now.
- 10:18Maybe move that to once. James Franklin talked about
- 10:21standardizing the schedules with the number of conference games.
- 10:24I think maybe eliminating conference championships because
- 10:27one of the things about the conference championship is
- 10:30losing it actually was better than winning it.
- 10:34I mean, look at the path Penn State had versus the path Oregon
- 10:37had. And Oregon beat Penn State in
- 10:39the Big 10 championship. Now, that probably again will
- 10:41change next year to some degree if they eliminate the conference
- 10:45championship game. But it it distorts teams getting
- 10:49into the playoffs too, because now you're debating whether a
- 10:52team that lost a conference championship game should get in
- 10:56over a team that didn't even appear in a conference
- 10:58championship game. Like Alabama was the big example
- 11:00this year. Alabama didn't make it to the
- 11:03SEC championship game, and people were talking about
- 11:06whether they should get in over SMU, who made it and lost.
- 11:10And it, you know, it's like, do you punish SMU because they lost
- 11:14the conference championship game and the committee ultimate, I
- 11:16think made the right call going with SMU.
- 11:20Yeah. I'm glad they didn't punish SMU.
- 11:23I I think one good thing, and I got in a nice little argument on
- 11:27acts with somebody about this the other day.
- 11:29I think they needed to expand the playoff and this year's
- 11:32playoff, in my opinion, proves that.
- 11:36I don't think you needed 12. And here's the here's the
- 11:38difference. If you want to argue about Ole
- 11:41Miss, Alabama, South Carolina, like who should be the 13th
- 11:45team? Those are all fun debates in my
- 11:48opinion. I don't think any of those teams
- 11:50this year could actually have won the national championship.
- 11:53And that's the difference. Like, if you want to bitch about
- 11:56the 13th team, that's fine and it's fun for content.
- 12:00But I think in years past, because the goal of sports is to
- 12:04have the best or most deserving champion.
- 12:06And I think with only four teams, there were probably some
- 12:09years where a fifth seed, a sixth seed could have actually
- 12:14won the national championship in this format that we have right
- 12:18now. Case in point is Ohio State and
- 12:20Notre Dame if you went by straight seating, Eric.
- 12:24So obviously Boise and Arizona State had higher seats.
- 12:28But if you went by the rankings I'm talking about, I believe
- 12:31Ohio State would be 6 and Notre Dame would be 5.
- 12:34So that right there shows you that they would not be in the
- 12:37playoffs in previous years and and they've had the most
- 12:41impressive wins of the playoffs by far.
- 12:43Ohio State smoking Oregon. I think you can make the case
- 12:46that Notre Dame beating Big Bad Georgia was another huge win
- 12:51right there. So those teams wouldn't even
- 12:53have been in the playoff in previous years.
- 12:55And that's why I think they had to expand to either six or
- 12:59eight. I'm not going to complain about
- 13:0112, but that's why I don't think the arguments for the teams left
- 13:05out. To me, it's fun, but like, they
- 13:07don't really have a case. None of those teams, in my
- 13:10opinion, could have won three games or what, four games?
- 13:14Ohio State will have to win four games, right?
- 13:17They already beat Tennessee, Oregon.
- 13:18They'd have to beat Texas and then Notre Dame or Penn State.
- 13:22That's a tough trek. I don't think any of those nine
- 13:24and three SEC teams could have won four games to win the
- 13:27national championship. And that's the difference to me.
- 13:30Yeah, absolutely. It it would be the 3-4 if you
- 13:32did just straight seating this, the final four would be the
- 13:34three, 4-5 and six seats. So that would tell you that you
- 13:37need more than four if you want to get the true champion.
- 13:40And also I think Arizona State made a strong statement to tell
- 13:43you that you can't necessarily just assume that the the
- 13:48secondary conferences, let's call them the ACC and the Big 12
- 13:51are going to be inferior every year.
- 13:53Some years obviously their champion will be in far
- 13:55inferior, but not this year. And the outlook, the SEC
- 13:59obviously top to bottom is a way stronger conference than the Big
- 14:0212. But I like a system where the
- 14:05Big 12 gets one team at least and the SEC, I'm sorry, the 4th
- 14:10or 15 from the SEC gets left out.
- 14:12I don't feel too bad from that. And I think Arizona State
- 14:14validated that with the way that they played despite losing.
- 14:18So I think that was I think 12's the perfect number for now.
- 14:21Let's see how it plays out over the next few years.
- 14:23Let's see what happens next year when the seeding.
- 14:24I assume they'll make the change for next year with the real
- 14:27seeding and not distort it with the conference champions getting
- 14:30the top 4. The biggest thing is you said it
- 14:32improves the playoff system. It gives you a true champion.
- 14:35Also, like I said earlier, makes the regular season mean more.
- 14:37It had so much state, so much in terms of stakes to so many
- 14:41games. So I think it's been a huge
- 14:43success despite 7 of the 8 games essentially being blowouts or
- 14:46close to blowout so far. I, I didn't think about this
- 14:49when you were talking about Ohio State did because you were such
- 14:51a fan when you were young. Did you ever think about going
- 14:54to Ohio State? Yeah, so many people though,
- 14:58like my brother went to Ohio State at the start.
- 15:01My sister who's younger, she went to Ohio State.
- 15:04I had so many aunts, uncles, so many friends, like we would
- 15:06party at Ohio State growing up. So in a way I kind of wanted to
- 15:10do something different. I I do wish I went to Bradley.
- 15:13I wish I would have went somewhere that had a football
- 15:16team because I do think it's fun.
- 15:18Not just, you know, to me, it's not just when you're there, like
- 15:21having your football Saturday when you go there is awesome,
- 15:24but it's also just the rest of your life.
- 15:26Like, it's pretty cool to have a team like that the rest of your
- 15:29life to go to bowl games. Same with basketball.
- 15:32Now Bradley has an OK basketball team.
- 15:34So like, Bradley will make the NCAA tournament every once in a
- 15:37while. I think they made it three times
- 15:39since I've been graduated college.
- 15:42But it'd be pretty sweet. Like for you, Penn State, you
- 15:45get a awesome football season every year.
- 15:47I know Penn State's not great at basketball, but I look at it
- 15:50like Michigan State, for example.
- 15:51I worked in Lansing for two years and I was about 2423 years
- 15:55old. In a way, I feel like I went to
- 15:57Michigan State because I partied the bar so much and I kind of
- 16:00got for that two years. I was I was I was into like the
- 16:04Tom Izzo basketball team, the Mark Dantonio football team.
- 16:07And so to have that the rest of your life to buy your gear to go
- 16:11to the games is pretty cool. But like growing up, I kind of
- 16:13wanted to do something different because so many people around me
- 16:17went to Ohio State. Hey, let's we're at an hour.
- 16:21Thank you everybody for watching support our Saint Louis sponsors
- 16:24here, Triad Bank, Saint Louis lawn care, Saint Louis equipment
- 16:27corner butcher and chophouse. Let's give our predictions for
- 16:31the College Football Playoff. I'll I'll start here.
- 16:34And by the way, I'm going to, I'm going to pick Notre Dame.
- 16:38But I, I've actually gained a lot of respect for Penn State
- 16:42this year. And by the way, more so in their
- 16:44losses than their wins. Like I don't look at them
- 16:47beating SMU and Boise as much as playing really close to Ohio
- 16:52State. And even that Oregon game was a
- 16:55shootout. So like the defense wasn't
- 16:58wasn't running all cylinders, but like to score 37 on Oregon
- 17:02to lose by, you know, one possession.
- 17:04I know it wasn't exactly like that the whole game, but I I
- 17:06think this Penn State team is legit.
- 17:09But I think you're running into the most legit Notre Dame team
- 17:13in my lifetime of remembering football.
- 17:15Like I was alive for Lou Holtz, but I don't remember it like in
- 17:18the last 30 years. I think this is probably the
- 17:19best Notre Dame team. I'm going to say Notre Dame wins
- 17:22close and I'll be a Homer. I I think Ohio State wins by
- 17:26about 10. What do you think?
- 17:29I'm I'm gonna go with Ohio State as well.
- 17:31And I think they're the most talented team in the country.
- 17:33And that Michigan game we that was a fluke.
- 17:36I think they've proven that in the playoff.
- 17:38They're just on a roll right now.
- 17:39And Texas's defense proved it's pretty vulnerable against
- 17:42Arizona State. It's not this all time great
- 17:45defense like people were saying it was.
- 17:46So I'm gonna go to Ohio State fairly easily.
- 17:49Penn State I think eats it out over Notre Dame.
- 17:51I'll be a Homer here. And then once again, we lose to
- 17:54Ohio State yet again, this time on the biggest national stage in
- 17:59the biggest moment, just like we always do.
- 18:02So I'll, I think Ohio State will, will win it.
- 18:05I will say whether Notre Dame or Penn State wins that game will
- 18:11not surprise me one bit. And I guess that's not just
- 18:13going by the line. The line is one point.
- 18:15I haven't even looked at the Ohio State line.
- 18:17I know it opened at like 4 1/2 and then it went to 6 1/2.
- 18:20I don't know what it's at now. I'll check, but I, I would be,
- 18:25I, I shouldn't say I'd be that surprised because Ohio State
- 18:28laid such a egg versus Michigan and their offensive game plan
- 18:31was just, it just made no sense. I think people now understand
- 18:34why Ohio State fans were mad at Ryan Day because it didn't make
- 18:37any sense of, of the game plan offensively versus Michigan.
- 18:42So could they lay another egg? Sure.
- 18:45I'm trying to find the spread on that game.
- 18:48Let's see here. Here it is.
- 18:50Where are we at, Baba? Here we go.
- 18:52OK, so this is tomorrow. Another another 630 game
- 18:57tomorrow. I'm buying time error.
- 18:59Where's the God damn spread? Oh, for which game we got?
- 19:03Ohio State. OK, here it is.
- 19:05Seven right I. See, I see six on ESPN.
- 19:09So either way, opened at ESPN, opened at 5, it's 6.
- 19:15The Overrunner's 54 1/2 and now it's 53 1/2, so hopefully a fun
- 19:20shoot out. The Notre Dame Penn State game
- 19:22is supposed to be a little lower scoring.
- 19:25All right, so you I think it'll be good.
- 19:26Ohio State, I have Ohio. State and Penn State with Ohio
- 19:29State winning and I'm excited for the NFL playoffs.
- 19:32We can talk more about that next week.
- 19:33The first round. You know, most of these games or
- 19:37not most, but at least half of them, there's a really clear
- 19:39favorite. And of course the big boys,
- 19:42Kansas City and Detroit don't even play.
- 19:44They get the first round bye. But I love the NFL playoffs that
- 19:46first weekend with six games. And now that the college
- 19:49football playoffs expanded, think about this.
- 19:50You have starting tonight, you have college football semi final
- 19:53tonight, college football semi final tomorrow, NFL playoff
- 19:56games Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
- 20:00I mean, that is quite a nice five day run.
- 20:04Love it. Yeah, we'll talk NFL next week.
- 20:06To be honest, I don't really know anything about any of these
- 20:08teams, so I'll watch. I'll watch a couple of the games
- 20:11this weekend. Although I was looking at them,
- 20:14a lot of them looked. I know people were joking about
- 20:16this like that. The Houston Texans always get
- 20:18that first shit game. It does seem like that.
- 20:21It seems like there's a lot of shit games and it's crazy that
- 20:23the Lions again, growing up around Lions country and
- 20:26covering the Lions when they were horrible.
- 20:30It is amazing that the lions are now the bullies.
- 20:32Like it's great. It's it's almost something that
- 20:34doesn't it doesn't even make sense.
- 20:35Like you're you're kind of surprised.
- 20:38It's possible the Lions were so bad for so long that it's just
- 20:42it's weird that they're this good.
- 20:45It's great. I think it's a great story.
- 20:47And for anyone, I'm obviously not a Lions fan, but anyone who
- 20:50grew up in his roughly our age remembers the Lions.
- 20:52Even even people like you, people who were far further away
- 20:56because of Barry Sanders, because they were always at
- 20:58least competitive with him, even though they were rarely good.
- 21:02And also on Thanksgiving, I really think that matters
- 21:04because every people would see them every year and you would
- 21:07see Sanders and they'd be playing in that game that, you
- 21:10know, pretty much everybody in America was watching every year.
