- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05It's Monday, so it's time for Shapiro World with David Shapiro from Sassman
- 0:09Securities.
- 0:11At the moment in Manhattan, David, how's the news treating the Iran war situation,
- 0:16which has escalated over the weekend?
- 0:18I tell you what surprised me is that just how strong, and I'm talking mainly from
- 0:23where we are,
- 0:25which is Manhattan, which is New York, and of course...
- 0:28You've got your regional stations.
- 0:31But I think if you pick up the mood here, it's surprisingly, when I say
- 0:38surprisingly,
- 0:40anti-America, anti-Trump.
- 0:42You know, even within Americans themselves, you know, you can sense the
- 0:45bias.
- 0:46You can sense the bias in things like the New York Times, various channels.
- 0:51Certainly you don't watch CNN if you like Trump, you know, because it's very…
- 0:59I can't explain.
- 1:00There was a protest down at Washington Square.
- 1:05And what happened, you had both sides.
- 1:07You had on the left side, you had pro-America, and on the right side, you
- 1:13had anti-America,
- 1:15pro-Iran.
- 1:17And when it was covered by the major channels, you saw whatever they're
- 1:21leaning,
- 1:21whatever they're leaning was towards, either pro or anti.
- 1:25Nothing in between.
- 1:26nothing in between.
- 1:27And that's why I like to watch New York One Spectrum because they haven't got a
- 1:34huge news staff,
- 1:36but they go out and they'll tell you that there's, you know,
- 1:38there was some trouble in Brooklyn or this train line is out of order.
- 1:42And generally, I relate it to Caxton.
- 1:45Remember the knock and drop?
- 1:47Knock and drop in South Africa, yes.
- 1:50Which is great because it tells you the news.
- 1:53And from that, you get more truth then.
- 1:56any of the major channels at all, you know, which are really biased.
- 2:00But I must say something, just going through and distilling the news here,
- 2:07there's a massive, you know,
- 2:09the left-leaning media on that are massively anti-Trump,
- 2:11massively anti what's happening in Iran, almost to a point where they're pro-Iran,
- 2:17you know, which is really odd, you know, considering who the Iranians are.
- 2:23I watched a film yesterday, David, called Official Secrets.
- 2:26It's a British film.
- 2:27It stars Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes and quite a few other actors that you
- 2:32would recognise.
- 2:34And it was about the lead-up to the Iraq War and a woman who worked at GCHQ,
- 2:39that's Government Communication Headquarters.
- 2:41It's like the Pentagon, you know,
- 2:45lots of people spying on conversations from the Chinese embassy, that sort of
- 2:50thing.
- 2:50All sort of secret stuff for the British government.
- 2:53And it was about this young person who worked there and who leaked a particular
- 3:00memo that came from
- 3:02the National Security Agency in the US.
- 3:04And the way that the Iraq war was manipulated to happen, the information was
- 3:11manipulated.
- 3:13There weren't any weapons of mass destruction.
- 3:14That became clear in the film.
- 3:15And we knew that anyway.
- 3:17But they wanted to go to war.
- 3:19And the things.
- 3:20They played clips from George W.
- 3:22Bush and from Tony Blair, that slimy piece of rubbish, ex-British prime minister.
- 3:29And it was quite extraordinary.
- 3:31And the parallels between that film, Official Secrets,
- 3:35and what is going on now is quite astonishing because the woman said when
- 3:41she was being interrogated by Scotland Yard,
- 3:43she said, you can't just go to war on one person.
- 3:45You can't go to war on Saddam Hussein.
- 3:47Just like...
- 3:48Because you're going to war on a people.
- 3:51And eventually, I think 170,000 Iraqis were killed in that war.
- 3:56And God knows how many troops from America and the Allies, etc.
- 4:01And the same thing might happen in Iran if it keeps on going on, not to such an
- 4:06extent.
- 4:06But you could say you can't just go to war with the regime.
- 4:10You have to go to war with the population as well.
- 4:12So there are two sides to this.
- 4:15him.
- 4:16not anti-America, I'm anti-Trump, and I think there should be a distinction
- 4:21between the two, don't you?
- 4:23Sure, absolutely, but the other thing is that, well, what about the other side?
- 4:30Are you so anti-him that you pro the other side?
- 4:33Because that's what comes out of this.
- 4:35Hold on, this is the Khomeini who,
- 4:38when the revolution took place in 79, their aim was to destroy America, the big
- 4:44Satan.
- 4:45And that has been their aim for so long.
- 4:47And we know what they have done.
- 4:49Yes.
- 4:49And that's where I'm having difficulty.
- 4:51I'm saying, okay, you know, we know who Trump is.
- 4:54But what about the other side?
- 4:56You know, what about them?
- 4:58Do you want them to survive?
- 4:59Do you really believe that you could sit down with them and negotiate a deal where
- 5:06they would not produce a nuclear
- 5:08bomb?
- 5:10You know, you've also got to be kidding yourself.
- 5:12You know, they just play for time.
- 5:14It's the same story as...
- 5:16the Gaza conflict, which you can say, how can you possibly?
- 5:21defend Palestine, the Palestinians, because of what they did on October the
- 5:277th, the brutality of the slaughter of 1,200 innocent people.
- 5:32But then on the other hand, you say, OK, but 70,000 people, 40,000 of which were
- 5:38women and children,
- 5:40how was the response?
- 5:42How is that conscionable?
- 5:43So it's the same sort of story, David.
- 5:45Well, the whole story is that...
- 5:47You know, if we can go on arguing forever.
- 5:51Yeah.
- 5:52The whole story is that Hamas was not going to lay down their arms.
- 5:55They were not going to stop, you know, hoarding arms in tunnels and things like
- 6:01that.
- 6:01So how do you ever get rid of them?
- 6:02Yes.
- 6:03So you keep going on.
- 6:04And that's the same thing with Iran.
- 6:07You know, how are they ever going to be stopped?
- 6:10The only way is to cut off their head.
- 6:12So I Where I'm coming from, and I hope it's not coming through in the wrong way,
- 6:17is that… No, not at all.
- 6:19Who are you siding with?
- 6:20Are you siding with America?
- 6:23Or are you siding with Iran?
- 6:25Okay, Mr.
- 6:26New York Times, who are you siding with?
- 6:29Who do you want to prevail?
- 6:31Do you want Iran to prevail or do you want Trump to prevail?
- 6:34And they can't make up their mind.
- 6:35They don't know where they stand.
- 6:36I think most of them, David, are very much like me.
- 6:39They want anything that will bring down Trump.
- 6:42Then, They'll start again.
- 6:45But that means you're going to get a strengthened Iran.
- 6:48You know, Iran will celebrate this.
- 6:50You know, they're going to be the victors.
- 6:53Now you get a leader that sits around the Do you want Iran to continue?
- 6:56You know, do you want that regime to continue?
- 7:00And it seems like the New York Times and everybody here are saying, yes, you know,
- 7:04we're quite happy with them.
- 7:06It doesn't really affect us, you know, that they want to bomb the whole of they
- 7:11want to eradicate Israel.
- 7:13I want to eradicate America, you know, the anti-West.
- 7:15You know, it comes down to are you pro-West or anti-West?
- 7:19Where are you?
- 7:20I can't I'm deliberating this in my own mind and trying to understand where the
- 7:26media stand,
- 7:28where the American people stand.
- 7:30So what you're essentially saying is that Trump is the only answer.
- 7:32You've just said it.
- 7:33You don't want that regime to continue and Trump is the only answer, David.
- 7:36That's how you're coming across.
- 7:37I just wanted I want America to prevail, you know.
- 7:42We want to see the end of Iran.
- 7:44How it happens, I'm not sure.
- 7:46You know, I'm not sure.
- 7:47But why and if we could have got there through peaceful means, by all means.
- 7:52But that was never going to happen.
- 7:54So why did people will again, this is the anti-America stance.
- 7:58Yeah.
- 7:59Why would people then why would they send people to
- 8:05Geneva when they were just polishing their missiles up?
- 8:07They said that.
- 8:08They sent the real estate agent, Kushner.
- 8:12Fish Eye Kushner, and they send little Steve Witkoff.
- 8:16They sent him along, and they pretend to be negotiating.
- 8:19That's deceitful.
- 8:20They weren't negotiating at all.
- 8:21They didn't want a peaceful answer, just like Bush and Blair didn't want a peaceful
- 8:28answer against Iraq.
- 8:30So why do they do it?
- 8:32Why do they?
- 8:34I mean, they've got a really bad PR machine.
- 8:36That's all I can say.
- 8:38You see, I've come back to Europe as well.
- 8:40This is, you know, what does Stormer want?
- 8:42What does the UK want?
- 8:42What outcome do they want?
- 8:43That's not Europe, that's Britain.
- 8:45Britain, sorry, Britain.
- 8:46What does Europe want?
- 8:47What outcome does Europe want?
- 8:50That's my point.
- 8:51I'm not sure.
- 8:52Okay, you're forced to choose sides now.
- 8:55Right.
- 8:57You're sitting in the stands, there are two teams there, you can't just say, I
- 9:01want a decent match.
- 9:03You can't say, well, I just want a good game of football, that's all.
- 9:08A good game of football where everybody wins in the end when there's a peaceful
- 9:12negotiation.
- 9:14Who do you want to win?
- 9:16I don't know.
- 9:18Anyway, that's where I am at the moment,
- 9:18trying to make sense of everybody's opinion and where things lie.
- 9:25I know exactly what I'd do.
- 9:26I know exactly what I would do.
- 9:28Once Trump is out, you sit down rationally with these people and say, okay, you've
- 9:34got these beliefs, but your beliefs are too extreme.
- 9:36Why do you hate Israel?
- 9:38Why do you hate the United States?
- 9:40He's working on wheels.
- 9:42Yeah.
- 9:44Why can't we all just coexist?
- 9:46We'll give you this.
- 9:48You give us that.
- 9:50You stop sponsoring terrorism and burning U.S.
- 9:52and Israeli flags everywhere.
- 9:54I don't know.
- 9:56There's some way to do it, but Trump's not the person to do it.
- 9:58I'm sorry.
- 10:00No, he's certainly not.
- 10:02The problem is that there's you know what's worrying?
- 10:04Is that there's nobody on the call it in the Democrats that's emerging as a strong
- 10:06and powerful voice.
- 10:08There's no one.
- 10:10And that's even more disturbing.
- 10:12You know, they're all over the place, Lindsay.
- 10:14I know, because if you look at it,
- 10:15there's really only a couple of years left until the real election.
- 10:19I mean, once these midterms are out the way, you're starting to campaign for 2028.
- 10:24And if they've got nobody, then for goodness sake, we'll have
- 10:27J.D. Vance or somebody else, which is maybe even worse than Trump.
- 10:33How can you say that, Lindsay?
- 10:35Nothing can be worse than Trump.
- 10:37He's the worst of it all.
- 10:38You've got no idea.
- 10:40That's the point.
- 10:42Everybody's hoping for someone to stand up and be a legitimate voice, a voice of
- 10:48reason,
- 10:48a voice that can actually help bring this to a head and help find these peaceful
- 10:54solutions, but it's not there.
- 10:57They're not here at all.
- 10:59And that's even more concerning.
- 11:01I'm more concerned.
- 11:02of whether your daughter, you know, or your daughter's your son, or your son's
- 11:07your daughter, and, you know, rubbish like that.
- 11:09It's, well, I don't know.
- 11:14It's all too much for me.
- 11:16It's all too much.
- 11:17And the markets are a bit strange.
- 11:18So, you know, on Friday, you went into the weekend knowing what was going on.
- 11:22There's a war in the Middle East.
- 11:23It's as simple as that.
- 11:24People say, shall we call it a war?
- 11:25Shall we call it a war?
- 11:27Shut up.
- 11:27It's a war.
- 11:28People are fighting each other and lobbing missiles at each other.
- 11:30That's a war.
- 11:31So let's get that first clear first of all.
- 11:34So why then last night at half past 11 Central European time, when the futures
- 11:40markets opened,
- 11:42did oil jump so much?
- 11:43What had happened?
- 11:44There was a couple of depots in Tehran that were hit.
- 11:47Not particularly significant in the big scheme of things.
- 11:50Iran's not a huge producer.
- 11:51These sort of things were just storage facilities for the city.
- 11:55Why then suddenly at half past four this morning, UK time,
- 11:59did the oil price go to $119.46?
- 12:03I think it was the election.
- 12:05About 25% higher.
- 12:06I think it was the election of the new Khomeini.
- 12:09But they knew that.
- 12:10Everyone knew that was going to happen.
- 12:13No, I know.
- 12:13But what happened, I think there was a hope that there would be some moderation,
- 12:18that the
- 12:20Iranian people would elect somebody in the middle who could actually bring peace.
- 12:25But all that happened is that you've got a new leader here who's just going to
- 12:31continue where his father left off.
- 12:33And I think that scared the market.
- 12:35In other words, that extended the market.
- 12:35That extended the reason to fight.
- 12:39This is going to be down to the wire.
- 12:42And I think that scared markets.
- 12:44And it's going to extend.
- 12:49There's no way you're going to get any kind of peace talks now.
- 12:52until a lot more damage is done.
- 12:56Well, anyway, it went to nearly 120.
- 12:58It's now 104, 105, something like that, which is still a big move.
- 13:03Of course it is.
- 13:04But it can't, well, maybe it can stay there.
- 13:07And I had an interesting chat with an oil analyst this morning in London, and he
- 13:13said it's not that the ships can't get through because the
- 13:15Iranians are going to bomb them or missile them because the U.S.
- 13:17will let their ships, will escort their ships through.
- 13:21It's because the insurance company won't insure it.
- 13:23They'll just say, yeah, let's certainly say, where are you taking your ship and
- 13:28what's it got?
- 13:30What's it got?
- 13:32And he says, well, I've got this oil tanker, this ultra-large crude carrier,
- 13:33and it's going to go through the Straits of Hormuz and it's originating in Saudi
- 13:38Arabia.
- 13:40And the guy will say, okay, thanks.
- 13:42Anyway, call me back in a couple of weeks.
- 13:44They won't touch it, David.
- 13:45That's interesting.
- 13:46That's the main reason.
- 13:48That's very interesting.
- 13:50Yeah.
- 13:51You know, even in America here, the reports are, I mean, America's got plenty
- 13:57of oil.
- 13:57There are net exporters.
- 13:58But you pay the price.
- 13:59You know, you pay the world price, even though there's plenty of oil.
- 14:02You know what worries me is places like South Africa where they rely on exports or
- 14:09imports of the
- 14:11finished product.
- 14:13You know, we don't refine anymore.
- 14:15And that's a worry.
- 14:17You know, that's a worry because if suppliers start.
- 14:19to seize and start to become slower means you're not going to be able to fill your
- 14:24car.
- 14:25Now, I remember long before your time, Mr.
- 14:28Williams, in 1973. 1973.
- 14:33It wasn't long before my time.
- 14:34I was nipping around, climbing trees and chasing rabbits.
- 14:36We had rations and you were only allowed to drive at 50 k's an hour or something
- 14:41like that.
- 14:43You weren't allowed to drive speedily.
- 14:44They reduced the speed.
- 14:48And also that you could only fill up,
- 14:52I don't know how often or when petrol was available, only a half a tank or something
- 14:58like that.
- 15:00So I do remember a period where there were rations, especially in a country like
- 15:04South Africa where there were no buses.
- 15:06You just had to use your motor car.
- 15:08So I don't know what the outlook is for countries that do import.
- 15:12especially in Africa, and they have to rely heavily on what comes out of the
- 15:17Middle East.
- 15:18So far, nothing's really happened.
- 15:21Do you remember the days when Summer Place, do you remember that house, Summer
- 15:26Place?
- 15:28Yes.
- 15:30Which was the first million-rand, can you believe it, the first million-rand house
- 15:33in South Africa, and everyone said, goodness me,
- 15:35this is outrageous that someone could pay that amount of money.
- 15:37It's now a conference centre and everything, as you well know,
- 15:40just on the corner of sort of in between Hyde Park and Stanton.
- 15:45The chap that owned that was a sanctions-busting oil trader, wasn't he?
- 15:51What was his name?
- 15:53Can you remember?
- 15:53Oh, gee.
- 15:54Oh, God.
- 15:54His name is just… Italian name, wasn't it?
- 15:56Yeah, yeah.
- 15:58I can't remember.
- 15:59It'll come back in a sec.
- 16:00But sure.
- 16:01And that was sanctions-busting.
- 16:03That was like Mark Rich, who was also a sanctions-buster.
- 16:06you know, would ensure that you got oil supplies in there.
- 16:11But this was after the 73 crisis.
- 16:17Anyway, I was just thinking that oil is one of those commodities that attracts, I
- 16:23don't know.
- 16:25Chiavelli.
- 16:27Chiavelli.
- 16:29That's right, Chiavelli.
- 16:31Exactly.
- 16:33It attracts these sort of people.
- 16:35It's a sort of murky world, isn't it, oil?
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:39It was.
- 16:41I'm wondering if you read Mark Rich's book.
- 16:43I mean, it's all about that.
- 16:45It's all about sanction busting and how he managed to get suppliers through and so
- 16:47on.
- 16:49That's why I think sometimes sanctions never work because there's always somebody
- 16:51who's willing to
- 16:53do it for a price.
- 16:55David, what other news have we got?
- 16:57I mean, let's take that aside.
- 16:59There's markets.
- 17:01You know, it's all markets.
- 17:03You know, markets, I'm just looking at New York.
- 17:05You know, we're six hours now.
- 17:07So, Markets have opened now.
- 17:09They're already open.
- 17:11There's quite a bit of a sell-off in the US.
- 17:13All the prices are down.
- 17:15It's holding up reasonably well.
- 17:16One would have expected a lot more of a sell-off, but there seems to be a general
- 17:23view that this will pass.
- 17:25I'm not sure.
- 17:25I'm concerned, Lindsay, that we're going to get the same kind of disruptions that
- 17:31we had during the Russia-Ukraine war.
- 17:33and maybe during COVID, because it's not only oil, it's fertilizer, it's finished
- 17:37product,
- 17:39it's food, all of those things that are exported.
- 17:44Those things are being disrupted as well.
- 17:46I know that around the Cape,
- 17:49I just read a report in Business Day about a lot of the food exporters are not going
- 17:56to be able to get their fresh product to markets
- 17:58and that because of delays.
- 18:00So I think there's quite a bit of disruption, and the longer it goes on,
- 18:01the more it's going to upset markets and try to bring the supply chains back in
- 18:07range.
- 18:09If you're a central banker, if you're a U.S.
- 18:11central banker, and let's say you're not Colin Powell, he's a different one,
- 18:17Jerome Powell, you've got a couple of months left, and you're having a
- 18:23conversation with the president, Mr.
- 18:25Trump, And he says, Trump says, look, with this.
- 18:27with this crisis that we've got now, you've got to stimulate the economy.
- 18:31We don't want people to go into our shelves, so cut rates, cut rates.
- 18:34And Powell says we can't do that.
- 18:36We're custodians of inflation.
- 18:38We've got to keep inflation under control.
- 18:41And with oil prices here, then CPI inflation is going to go through the roof.
- 18:46It doesn't matter about core inflation.
- 18:47You can strip that out as much as you like.
- 18:50You can strip out the volatile elements like food and fuel, and you can talk about
- 18:56core, but it's CPI we're looking at.
- 18:58So we're going to keep rates steady for now with a cautious outlook.
- 19:03And then the president says,
- 19:04but we lost 92,000 jobs in the last non-farm payrolls number, which is
- 19:11outrageous.
- 19:13So cut rates.
- 19:15It's a difficult, it's a very difficult one.
- 19:17It is.
- 19:19You know that, I mean, there's talk now of the ECB raising rates and also the UK
- 19:22raising rates because of the...
- 19:24increase in worries about inflation because of the oil price and petrol prices
- 19:28and that.
- 19:30I'm not sure how they're going to interpret this.
- 19:31Funny enough, there's no shortage of oil.
- 19:33You're just paying a higher price at the pump.
- 19:36There's plenty of oil here.
- 19:37There's plenty of gas.
- 19:38It's not going to be shortages.
- 19:40You're just going to pay more.
- 19:41But of course, price goes up, you don't buy it.
- 19:43But it is a dilemma because the job numbers are starting to look weak.
- 19:49And you know, when you talk to people around here, You hear of more job losses
- 19:55in this area, more job losses in this area,
- 19:57this person's son might be laid off type thing and so on.
- 20:02So there is certainly a lot more talk about a weaker labour
- 20:09market.
- 20:10More so than I've ever heard before.
- 20:12So, yes, that is a big problem.
- 20:14So it depends whether Powell is going to be influenced by that or the prospects of
- 20:19a higher oil price.
- 20:21And I hope he doesn't go to, this is transitory, you know, than oil prices
- 20:25transitory.
- 20:27Well, I mean, it could be transitory because I can tell you that that spike to
- 20:31nearly $120 a barrel was a lot of panic.
- 20:33Because, see, people have short-term commitments in the oil industry.
- 20:35In other words, they have to cover the ship that's already on the water that they
- 20:40haven't covered or something.
- 20:42I don't know how it works, but that is from what I understand why it spiked so
- 20:45quickly.
- 20:46Now it's got to find its level.
- 20:49It's currently Brent crude oil is $103 a barrel.
- 20:53And you say to yourself, if you're an optimist, you say, oh, but it was up 25%.
- 20:57Now it's only up 11%.
- 20:58Another person would say it's up 11%, which is still low.
- 21:03I don't know.
- 21:04Where you stand.
- 21:05I personally think we've seen the high of oil, and this is just a moment in time,
- 21:11and the oil will start to come through.
- 21:13And we'll come back.
- 21:14We won't come back to 60 to 70, but we'll stay 80 to
- 21:1990. I think that in the same way, I think we've peaked in platinum, we've peaked in
- 21:24gold,
- 21:25we've peaked in all those metals.
- 21:27We've reached the highs.
- 21:28We're not going back there.
- 21:29If you look at gold now.
- 21:31It's heading towards, you know, 5,000.
- 21:33And this is supposed to be the ultimate safe haven bet.
- 21:37And, yes, investors are saying, well, interest rates are going to go up.
- 21:43Therefore, it's going to cost us more to hold the gold.
- 21:45Yes, that might be an issue, but that's going to be an issue with all the safe
- 21:50haven assets.
- 21:52You know, the dollar has improved dramatically.
- 21:54We've seen it in the RAND.
- 21:56I know the RAND is improving slightly now, but it's still in the 1664 area.
- 22:00And it's still pretty, you know, pretty weak.
- 22:03And that's all in a week.
- 22:04A week ago, it was below 60.
- 22:07So I think a lot of these assets now have seen their peak.
- 22:12I've come under quite a bit of pressure because I said, you know, it's time to go
- 22:16back into America.
- 22:18America is still the strongest economy.
- 22:20It's still got the strongest, you know, in times like this,
- 22:23it's always the most resilient of economy.
- 22:27You know, you don't want to be in the UK, which is not UK.
- 22:30in Europe, which is taking absolute hammering because of shortages and because
- 22:37of the massive increase
- 22:39that energy prices are going to have on the economy.
- 22:40You know, it's a vulnerable economy.
- 22:42Yes.
- 22:43But you're going to get two sides of a story, you know, an argument.
- 22:47You just come under a lot of pressure.
- 22:50But my view is, okay, this is time.
- 22:53It's time to get back into U.S.
- 22:55assets.
- 22:56Give it a breather.
- 22:57Not now, not today, not, you know, this moment.
- 22:59But I think when things settle, you're going to get a big recovery,
- 23:03certainly in the IR stocks and U.S.
- 23:07assets.
- 23:07I had a look at an NVIDIA chart, a very rudimentary one the other day.
- 23:12It's gone sideways since August, David.
- 23:14It's done nothing.
- 23:15Yeah, yeah.
- 23:16And yet, have a look at the multiple.
- 23:18What do you think the forward P is?
- 23:20Well, you told me the other day, and you told everybody else on LinkedIn as well.
- 23:23Yeah, it's 20. It's nothing.
- 23:27I know.
- 23:28And you say, okay.
- 23:29Well, where does it rank in terms of all the other stocks?
- 23:32And it's somewhere towards the bottom, I mean, towards the bottom meaning cheap.
- 23:36So I'm saying, okay, I can live with that.
- 23:40For me, it's fine.
- 23:42I don't think it's a PE story, that one.
- 23:44I think it's people saying, well, is this incredible monopoly that it's enjoyed,
- 23:50which is essentially what it has enjoyed,
- 23:52will it continue just like it has at ASML, our favorite stock?
- 23:57or has someone come in and stolen its lunch, if you see what I'm up to here?
- 24:01I don't think so.
- 24:02I'm just, they're clobbering ASML at the moment.
- 24:05You know, I'm saying, hold on a second.
- 24:07You don't have to clobber that one.
- 24:08Clobber everything else.
- 24:10You can clobber the LVMH and Hermes and Ferrari and all the luxury goods.
- 24:14They press a button, you know that.
- 24:15When there's panic, they just say, press the sell button.
- 24:17There's 30 stocks that get sold off in one push, you know that, David.
- 24:22It's not like the old days.
- 24:23Excuse me, could you sell that for me?
- 24:25And could you sell that for me?
- 24:26It doesn't work like that anymore, as we all know.
- 24:28No, no.
- 24:29I know.
- 24:30I think that's why.
- 24:31I think there will be opportunities here, but you don't have to.
- 24:35You know, you don't need a false start.
- 24:36You don't have to rush in now.
- 24:38So we've just got to go through it.
- 24:40Lindsay, I've got to tell you something.
- 24:41Go on.
- 24:43This was really awful.
- 24:46They did not broadcast or show the FA Cup games.
- 24:50That's a major tragedy.
- 24:51You see, that's the Trump administration for you.
- 24:55They don't even know what football is.
- 24:56I said that.
- 24:57That's why I'm saying, you know, while I'm not doing the market, I don't feel like
- 25:02reading about the markets.
- 25:04I thought, okay, there's going to be a couple of really good games here to watch.
- 25:07And I tried every… I could not get it.
- 25:12Why don't you do what I said to you in a private moment?
- 25:15I said get yourself
- 25:16NordVPN, and then you go to a European or UK broadcaster,
- 25:22and you pretend you're in Britain or you pretend you're in the Netherlands,
- 25:27and then plug into them.
- 25:31You might have to pay a monthly charge.
- 25:33You don't serve for the BBC.
- 25:34The BBC is free.
- 25:36BBC iPlayer.
- 25:38that's for nothing because we British are decent people.
- 25:41But you go to the Netherlands, apart from Kerstammer, you go to the Netherlands, you
- 25:48have to pay like,
- 25:50I don't know, 20 euros for the full football package.
- 25:53Are you not willing to do that?
- 25:55I couldn't believe it.
- 25:56You know, and I sat here and… You didn't answer my question.
- 25:59You're not willing to pay 20 euros to watch a match with a footballer?
- 26:03I'm going to… The only trouble is you told me the wrong time.
- 26:06If you would have told me that on Friday, I would have done it.
- 26:08I told you before Friday.
- 26:09I told you before.
- 26:10Yeah, but I didn't know that they weren't because I've got Peacock and I've got USA
- 26:14here where I can watch most of the Premier League games and other leagues and
- 26:19Champions League.
- 26:21But the FA Cup, they did not broadcast.
- 26:22So if I would have known that on Friday, I would have done exactly what you
- 26:27mentioned.
- 26:27So I sat down here on Saturday morning or Saturday afternoon.
- 26:31and try to get into the games.
- 26:34I'll tell you, the Arsenal game, just to make you feel worse, the Mansfield-Arsenal
- 26:39game was really good.
- 26:41Mansfield were very, very close to causing an upset there.
- 26:44And Arsenal didn't play their worst team.
- 26:46Well, they haven't got a worst team.
- 26:47They've got two very good teams on the bench and on the field.
- 26:50But they gave them a fright, and they played some really schoolful football.
- 26:54But the one that I didn't watch, because I object to Wrexham and I object to Chelsea,
- 26:59is Wrexham-Chelsea.
- 27:01And that was my...
- 27:03My brothers, my whole family texting me saying, aren't Wrexham amazing?
- 27:05And those Chelsea supporters.
- 27:07And I said, yes, they are, pretending I was watching, but I didn't.
- 27:09But apparently that was absolutely brilliant.
- 27:12So you did miss a couple of good games.
- 27:15And for the fifth time this season, Man City took out Newcastle.
- 27:19You know, it's all very well losing once, but five times in a season I think is,
- 27:25yeah,
- 27:27it does expose some weaknesses.
- 27:28I don't know if he's going to.
- 27:29Champions League is back, David, starting tomorrow.
- 27:32Yes, I know.
- 27:32Very interesting.
- 27:33Can you get that or are you also going to sit there?
- 27:35Yes, we'll get Champions.
- 27:36And the nice part about it, it's not in the evening, it's in the afternoon.
- 27:40Oh.
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:43Perfect.
- 27:43I can't believe it.
- 27:45What time are the American games when the World Cup is on?
- 27:48Because it's going to be very luxurious for me.
- 27:51It must be late-night games I get here.
- 27:53I wonder what they will make them late-night.
- 27:56Yeah.
- 27:57They, that's interesting.
- 28:01I haven't seen the schedule, but you can't afford it.
- 28:03I mean, the prices are ridiculous.
- 28:05And it's all over the show as well.
- 28:07You know, it's all over America.
- 28:08It's Canada, Mexico.
- 28:11Yeah, but I'm talking about watching it on telly.
- 28:14I mean, do I have to go to six different people to, I mean, who's.
- 28:18Who's broadcasting it?
- 28:19Who's got the rights to it?
- 28:21I don't know.
- 28:22I must find out.
- 28:22It's March already.
- 28:24There's a sign here that tells you how many hours until the kickoff.
- 28:28I've passed it every day, but I'm not quite sure who's going to broadcast it.
- 28:33Listen, there'll be big crowds.
- 28:35Don't, don't.
- 28:36Somewhere here, there's going to be massive crowds and massive amounts of
- 28:42money being generated here.
- 28:44Don't underestimate.
- 28:46You know, they have, Lindsay, they have these theme parks or fan parks.
- 28:48They go around every now and again to cities, and they get everybody there to
- 28:55watch games, which they broadcast live.
- 28:57And, you know, support.
- 28:59And they get massive following.
- 29:01You know, it's huge.
- 29:03And it's not expats.
- 29:05You know, meaning it's, you know, you'd always think you'll see some Greeks or
- 29:07some South Americans.
- 29:09Forget it.
- 29:11It's Americans.
- 29:13You know what I mean?
- 29:15You know, you always used to have in the early days of football, yeah, it was
- 29:16mainly people who were missing their hometowns, you know.
- 29:18from somewhere in Spain or something like this, but not anymore.
- 29:21There's a huge following of clubs.
- 29:24It's big.
- 29:25Well, I'm sort of looking forward to it now.
- 29:28You've got my faith because there was a sort of a movement that tried to get
- 29:34somewhere,
- 29:36tried to start up, boycott the US, Canada and Mexico World Cup.
- 29:39And it didn't obviously take off because football eventually wins over, you know.
- 29:44No one cares.
- 29:47You'll see the airports and everything.
- 29:49No one gives a damn.
- 29:50Forget about that.
- 29:52They're not going to be put off by that.
- 29:55Forget it.
- 29:55But the prices are something else, as you quite rightly said.
- 29:58I don't know how people can spend $1,000 on a ticket minimum for a crappy seat in
- 30:04El Paso.
- 30:06It's also a time where people are squeezed.
- 30:07You know, people are being squeezed at the moment.
- 30:10I mean, you know, the affordability story is very real and layoffs and that.
- 30:15But, and the prices are, you know, in the thousands of dollars for each ticket.
- 30:21So, it's expensive.
- 30:24And everything here is hospitality, you know, it's all around that.
- 30:28Everything here is an eat fest.
- 30:30You know, you go to a game and, you know, I know that if you go watch Chelsea or
- 30:35whoever, you know.
- 30:37You go at halftime and you might go get a pint.
- 30:37Yeah, it's this constant stream of hot dogs and you can't believe what they say.
- 30:43You know, you've got no idea.
- 30:44You go to a baseball game, you've got absolutely no idea of how much food is
- 30:50consumed.
- 30:52I mean, you know, you can't, you won't even believe it if you saw it.
- 30:54Yeah, anyway, that's America.
- 30:57Consumer nation, yeah.
- 30:58All right, David, thank you very much for your time.
- 31:01As always.
- 31:02Go and consume something.
- 31:04And I will speak to you on Thursday with David Shapiro from Assessment Securities
- 31:09in Manhattan.
- 31:11And that was Shapiro World.
