- 0:04- Hello, and welcome to the Pop cCulture Junkie podcast.
- 0:07I'm Olivia.
- 0:08Here, as always, with my fellow Junkie.
- 0:11- Shauna.
- 0:12- So, Shauna, how about how have we been?
- 0:16How are we living life?
- 0:17- How are we living life?
- 0:19You know, day to day,
- 0:21putting my pants on one leg at a time.
- 0:24- Oh, you don't jump in.
- 0:27- No, I'm not coordinated enough for that.
- 0:29- I think 37.
- 0:30- I think at this time, I would like eat shit
- 0:33and like hit the bed.
- 0:35- Hopefully the bed.
- 0:36- I've done that before.
- 0:38- You just put your pants on the ground.
- 0:39It is hopped perfectly into them.
- 0:42- And when I was younger, for sure.
- 0:45Probably because someone said,
- 0:47"Put my legs in one leg at a time."
- 0:49You know?
- 0:49- I'm not like other girls.
- 0:51I put on my pants, different, special.
- 0:54(laughing)
- 0:55- I jump right in and see the day.
- 0:57- Carphing.
- 0:58- Oh, Jesus Christ.
- 1:00- I think I--
- 1:01- I've got to have the will to live.
- 1:03- I know, like a carpe Diem, Jesus Christ.
- 1:06(laughing)
- 1:07- Back when I was a measly five years old
- 1:10and still had a goose stuff alive.
- 1:12- Yeah, there you go.
- 1:12- Maybe when I was a baby,
- 1:14I could just leap into my pants at one jump.
- 1:17(laughing)
- 1:20Anyway, how have you been?
- 1:22- I'm a gut.
- 1:25It is like better, really rare moment in time
- 1:28where it's actually like 70 degrees consistently
- 1:32in San Francisco.
- 1:34And one thing about living in a city
- 1:36where it is not always sunny and nice is
- 1:39there is just a sense of whimsy when you go outside
- 1:43and everyone is outside one
- 1:45because none of the places here have air conditioning.
- 1:48So like, you gotta be outside.
- 1:51Just in general, you can't be in your house,
- 1:52but everyone is just like so stoked.
- 1:55And trying to be at a park.
- 1:57- I'm so jealous of every time you send
- 1:59like a video or a picture and you're just
- 2:02walking the streets with a drink in the hand
- 2:04and there's just like a gay parade or a gay race
- 2:08or a gay concert or a gay Jesus.
- 2:10- Like,
- 2:11(laughing)
- 2:13- I wanna do all of those things.
- 2:16- If you do not follow me on Instagram,
- 2:18you probably missed it,
- 2:20but I went to this race in San Francisco.
- 2:23It is called Bay to Breakers.
- 2:26And it's either like a marathon or like a 10K.
- 2:30I don't know, it's not the point.
- 2:31- It is the point.
- 2:32- That's not the point.
- 2:33So it has become this thing where it ends along
- 2:38the Panhandle and At Ocean Beach.
- 2:41So it's right by Golden Gate Park.
- 2:43And every year, the runners dress up
- 2:46in like these crazy costumes.
- 2:48It's become like a whole thing.
- 2:50And everybody dresses like in really odd,
- 2:54clothing and stuff like that.
- 2:56There's a group of runners every single year
- 2:59who dress up as salmon and they run
- 3:02the opposite way of the race.
- 3:04So it's just like a silly, silly goofy thing
- 3:07inside the city. - That is so funny.
- 3:09- You weren't responding to the group chat like all day.
- 3:12And I was like, what is she doing?
- 3:13And I looked at your instance.
- 3:15Like she said a gay foot race.
- 3:17(laughing)
- 3:18Oh, okay.
- 3:19The gays are running for fun.
- 3:22And so all of the houses along the Panhandle,
- 3:26they turn their stoops into like little mini like DJ sets
- 3:30as well.
- 3:31So I had a friend who was DJing.
- 3:34So we went, like, and I rode bikes like two miles
- 3:38to get to the same room in the morning.
- 3:40And then we,
- 3:41- You rode your bicycles to a stoop party.
- 3:45- Oh my god.
- 3:46- Now life is looking up.
- 3:47And Sean already knows this, but today I got my birthday present
- 3:51in the mail from my mom and it was a dog backpack
- 3:55so that now Ziggy can come on our bike rides
- 3:58and have a grand old time with us.
- 3:59It was so cute.
- 4:01- I can't decide though.
- 4:03Like in his photograph,
- 4:05he looks both intrigued and also petrified.
- 4:08- Is it a little bit of both?
- 4:10- I think that's Ziggy's face.
- 4:11- I think that's Ziggy's face.
- 4:13(laughing)
- 4:14- It's a little cash Patel.
- 4:15- Yeah, he's giving cash Patel for sure.
- 4:18He's giving cash Patel.
- 4:20Yeah, no, we'll see how he does
- 4:23'cause after we're done recording,
- 4:25I'm gonna go ride my bike with Ziggy in the back pack.
- 4:28- Oh my god.
- 4:29- So it's gonna be a Easter.
- 4:31- It's gonna be fun.
- 4:32- Yeah, damn, it's an e-bike.
- 4:34So I don't know if I'm a hipster.
- 4:36I feel like a hipster would say that's like settling out.
- 4:39Maybe I'm just going full tech bro.
- 4:41- I have an e-bike.
- 4:43Well Andrew has an e-bike.
- 4:45But I've never, like, are an e-bike.
- 4:47- I've never done it.
- 4:48- It's an e-bike.
- 4:49- It's an e-bike.
- 4:51I've never controlled it.
- 4:53I've always been in the little seat in the back.
- 4:56Like, he always rides it and then he's got a little seat.
- 4:59- Is it a little bike?
- 5:00- No, really.
- 5:01- It just has a e-bike.
- 5:02- He bought me a little like cushion seat.
- 5:04And whenever, and I like wrap my arms around him.
- 5:07And I look like Yoda looks back.
- 5:10- You know, it's like you have a Ziggy backpack.
- 5:13- Yeah, I'm in his little shawner.
- 5:15I'm a little shawner inside of the backpack instead of Ziggy.
- 5:18- So I've never actually done any peddling.
- 5:22- Okay.
- 5:24Okay.
- 5:25You can imagine that it's just like riding or controlling another bike.
- 5:31But this time you get a little boost every time you pedal.
- 5:35- It's quite nice.
- 5:35- It's a zip-slipp.
- 5:37- Yeah, sometimes I'm like, oh, should we not use the electric
- 5:41bikes, get like a good little workout in and we're like,
- 5:44absolutely not.
- 5:45- And definitely.
- 5:46- We're going up San Francisco to Olslai.
- 5:48- That's insane.
- 5:49- But people do that all the time.
- 5:51And like, and I have a, one of the steepest streets
- 5:54of my neighborhood in all of the city.
- 5:56And I see people just riding their bike up that thing.
- 6:00- No, that's insane.
- 6:01- That's insane at all.
- 6:02And I'm like, this is why you're better than me, you know?
- 6:05- Fabulous buns and thighs everywhere in your neighborhood.
- 6:08Those asses are just out of control.
- 6:10Cause that hill is steep.
- 6:12- We're walking it like drunk home from the bar one night.
- 6:16- Yeah.
- 6:17- That's not even the steepest one.
- 6:19That's right, when I'm talking about that one's just crazy.
- 6:21- Oh my god.
- 6:22- But yeah, absolutely.
- 6:24It is crazy.
- 6:25What's funny though is I wouldn't say I'm like,
- 6:27great asses in San Francisco.
- 6:29They probably exist.
- 6:31But everybody just wears really baggy clothing.
- 6:34So I guess I don't know.
- 6:36- That's kind of like the Ginzy thing now.
- 6:38Like we're not, I don't know, everyone wears baggy jeans.
- 6:41I went to Levi's last week.
- 6:44Cause I was like, I want some new jeans.
- 6:47All I ever skinny jeans.
- 6:49Yeah.
- 6:50And I, there were like low rise extra baggy.
- 6:54And I was like, I can't do it.
- 6:56I got like a boot cut, like straight leg situation.
- 7:01Cause I feel like those will always be in style, right?
- 7:03Just like as 501 Levi's.
- 7:06- Yeah, boot cut.
- 7:08But like no, I got a pair of low rise jeans at this rift store.
- 7:13I don't think I ever set you the picture.
- 7:15I got a pair of Calvin Klein jeans
- 7:16that were high-rise skinny and they were cute.
- 7:19But then I got a pair of lucky brand jeans.
- 7:21And I couldn't tell they were low rise
- 7:22until I got them home and put them on.
- 7:24And I was like, yeah.
- 7:25- How big was the crotch?
- 7:27- I mean, not as low as like we used to wear,
- 7:31but too low for my millennial body.
- 7:36Like, if I still had the abs that I did,
- 7:40back when low rise jeans were a thing.
- 7:43But say, Lavi, one leg at a time, am I right?
- 7:49(laughing)
- 7:50- Yeah, there's no jumping into those bad vibes.
- 7:53- We are really.
- 7:55- We started with pants and made it back to pants.
- 7:58- Yeah.
- 7:59Everything comes back to pants in the end.
- 8:01- It's, everything is circular as one would say.
- 8:05- So yeah, a few weeks ago,
- 8:07Shana shared her favorite movie,
- 8:10The Furventada with me.
- 8:12And I'm here to return the favor by making her watch
- 8:15one of my favorite movies,
- 8:17"A Turn'al Sunshine of the Spalas Mind."
- 8:21I love this movie so much.
- 8:24I think if you were to ask me like,
- 8:27okay, what type of movie do you really enjoy?
- 8:30I love like, simply put a mind fuck of a movie.
- 8:34- Yeah.
- 8:35- I like it whenever 30 minutes in,
- 8:37you were like asking yourself like,
- 8:39I have no idea what is going on.
- 8:42(laughing)
- 8:43At this exact moment, are they here?
- 8:44Are they there?
- 8:45Am I supposed to understand what's happening?
- 8:47- So you like a non-linear kind of movie.
- 8:49We're kind of hop-sol over the place a little bit.
- 8:52But make sense in the end.
- 8:53- Yeah.
- 8:54- One of the movies that I really love,
- 8:55super, super fucked up to love this movie,
- 8:58Butterfly Effect.
- 9:00Really great.
- 9:01You don't really understand what's going on.
- 9:03Things are jumping around.
- 9:04- Yeah, I love it.
- 9:05Don't let me air a timeline.
- 9:07In a movie, I also think that just in general,
- 9:10like something that is really gonna leave you thinking
- 9:14about it for days, sometimes even years on end.
- 9:18And just really gets into the psyche.
- 9:20Like I think in our,
- 9:23I mean, this movie came out in 2004.
- 9:27Back then, not as much of the problem now,
- 9:30but we're in such an attention economy
- 9:32that I think when a movie can really just grab you,
- 9:35we're like, oh, I can't look away.
- 9:37I need to really stay watching.
- 9:40I also'm gonna miss something like generally great.
- 9:43Also, I think this is such an iconic movie in general.
- 9:47We're gonna talk about it at length,
- 9:49but to show you what was your experience prior to this
- 9:52with Eternal Sunshine and the Spice One?
- 9:54- I haven't seen it since it came out in 2004.
- 9:59Okay.
- 10:00Or maybe like, I rented it from Blockbuster.
- 10:04- Oh shit, that's how you know it's vintage.
- 10:06- Yeah.
- 10:07And I love this movie too.
- 10:09I think Jim Carey is so hot in this movie.
- 10:14- Oh my God, we try not to talk about movies too much before,
- 10:18like we record, so you guys can really get our authentic thoughts.
- 10:21- Yeah.
- 10:22- So Allshonna sends me is,
- 10:23oh my God, Jim Carey is so hot in this movie.
- 10:26(laughs)
- 10:27- I can't think Jim Carey is just hot anyway.
- 10:30Like the first Sonic-- - Yeah, maybe not right now.
- 10:33- Yeah, that's true.
- 10:34- The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie?
- 10:37Hot.
- 10:38Hot.
- 10:39- Okay, please.
- 10:41- He plays the bad guy in Sonic.
- 10:46Oh my God, I can't remember his name right now.
- 10:48And he's ridiculous looking in the second and third movie,
- 10:52but the first one?
- 10:53Hot.
- 10:54- Oh, I might--
- 10:56- I'm probably very alone in this.
- 10:59- Okay, it's the one that you're talking about
- 11:01where is the Curly Little Hipster mustache?
- 11:03- Yeah, not the Dr. Robotnik.
- 11:05Not with the stupid, huge one that he has in the cartoon.
- 11:09- But like the little hipster stash and I'm like,
- 11:12yeah. - Okay, yeah.
- 11:13- I see it.
- 11:14- I see it.
- 11:15- Thank you, thank you.
- 11:17- The one where he's got the really big one,
- 11:19I don't see it, but yeah.
- 11:21- No, no, don't see that one.
- 11:23- I love Kate Winslet.
- 11:24I mean, I was such a Titanic fan girl growing up
- 11:28and then seeing her in such a different role
- 11:31from being in Titanic.
- 11:32- Okay, yes.
- 11:34- I feel like this movie was a step away
- 11:37for all of the actors from like what they were kind of
- 11:40typecast as, what we were used to seeing them in.
- 11:43Like Elijah Wood was right in Lord of the Rings time then
- 11:48and I am a huge Lord of the Rings.
- 11:50- So I think this was actually his first movie,
- 11:52post Lord of the Rings.
- 11:53- Yeah, and seeing him be douchey,
- 11:55I was like, "Frodo, what? No!"
- 11:58(laughs)
- 11:59- "Frodo, what are you doing to me?"
- 12:00- I know.
- 12:02- Yeah, so what's really, really interesting is Jim Carey
- 12:05had really just been kind of coming off of Ace Ventura,
- 12:09the mask, he had already done the Truman show.
- 12:13So like the Truman show was really kind of this foyer
- 12:18into him taking more serious roles.
- 12:21I do think they're both kind of really interesting things
- 12:25to consider and stepping away from comedy.
- 12:28But Kate Winslet as well took this movie
- 12:31because she was trying to get out of being typecast
- 12:35as the period drama girl.
- 12:38- Yeah.
- 12:39- So I do think it's really, really interesting
- 12:41out of all the actresses out there,
- 12:44like Kirsten Dunst never misses.
- 12:47- Oh, her entire movie career.
- 12:50- Is just straight iconic films.
- 12:53- Yes, I think it's really, really interesting
- 12:55that she did this movie, Mark Ruffalo,
- 12:58as well, just such an all star cast.
- 13:02- I forgot that Mark Ruffalo was in this movie,
- 13:05like 'cause I haven't seen it in, gosh,
- 13:07what, 22 years Jesus.
- 13:10- Oh, that hurts me.
- 13:11- That hurts me.
- 13:12- It's just a little bit.
- 13:13- So when I saw his name pop up in the opening credits,
- 13:16I was like, "Oh yeah, Mark Ruffalo is in this."
- 13:19- I was like, "Ah, my guy."
- 13:21- I've been saying since you said
- 13:22you wanted to watch this movie
- 13:23that I had to bring this up this episode.
- 13:25One of my favorite bands of all time,
- 13:28and one of your favorite bands I know, Circa Survive,
- 13:31their debut album, "Jutana" is based on
- 13:36"A Turnal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
- 13:39So apparently if you listen to "Jutana"
- 13:42at the exact same time as you start the movie,
- 13:45it like coincides perfectly in lines up with the movie.
- 13:49- Oh wow. - And we should have done it.
- 13:51- I know, they have a song called "Meet Me in Montauk."
- 13:54Like that's like the closing song on the record.
- 13:57Yeah, so definitely give that album a listen again,
- 14:01if you have it, and like there's so many things
- 14:04that it little references to the movie that...
- 14:06- Yeah, I'm gonna have to do a re-listen there.
- 14:09- Yeah.
- 14:10- So yeah, I mean, like it's a 2004, like emo kid,
- 14:14art, broke culture, like movie.
- 14:17It is just ultimately like such a cult classic.
- 14:21So it's directed by Michael Gondry,
- 14:24and it's written by Charlie Kaufman and Michael Gondry
- 14:27and Pierre Bismuth.
- 14:29And Michael Gondry is actually really interesting.
- 14:33He is from a theater background,
- 14:37and if you listen to like most of our episodes,
- 14:40"Shana" and I are very big fans of movies
- 14:44with practical effects.
- 14:46And Michael Gondry actually is so anti-CGI
- 14:51or editing things like that.
- 14:53He really likes in his productions.
- 14:56So when you see moments within this movie
- 14:58of the characters almost like faded out in the background
- 15:03to imply like your memory doesn't remember every detail,
- 15:06those are actors behind a screen.
- 15:10- Oh, that's all in camera effects.
- 15:12- Yes, yeah, those are all in camera effects.
- 15:15And so there's a moment where Jim Carrey
- 15:18begins the process of having his mind erase.
- 15:21And Kate Winslet is running through their apartment.
- 15:24And that is not editing.
- 15:26That is actually Kate Winslet running into the bathroom,
- 15:30going out a trap door,
- 15:32and then moving into another part of the apartment.
- 15:35And what's interesting is they talk about
- 15:40how intense Michael Gondry is as a director.
- 15:44And things like that.
- 15:45So it is very, very interesting to know those things
- 15:49and rewatch it.
- 15:50We were like, we only call of CGI
- 15:53is when the car like drops.
- 15:56- Yeah. - And you know,
- 15:56like everything's, yeah, you know,
- 15:58they didn't actually drop a car.
- 15:59- Did they lay on the ice?
- 16:01- Yeah.
- 16:02- So they're actually on the ice
- 16:03and it was actually broken next to them.
- 16:05- Oh, that's hilarious.
- 16:06That's amazing.
- 16:07- I feel like we just jumped straight in.
- 16:08So if you can see the turbo sunshine of the spotless mind,
- 16:12it is a movie where Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet
- 16:16are in a relationship with Joel,
- 16:19bearish and Clementine.
- 16:20And it is a movie about a couple
- 16:25whose relationship turned sour
- 16:27and a couple undergoes a medical procedure
- 16:29to have each other erased from their memories forever.
- 16:34- Yes.
- 16:34- Well, Clementine does it first
- 16:36and then Joel kind of stumbles upon
- 16:39the fact that she did this,
- 16:41which I think is such an important thing to think about.
- 16:45He goes to the bookstore to visit her
- 16:47to try to make up with her and realizes
- 16:49she doesn't know who he is
- 16:51and then realizes talking to his friends
- 16:53that she had had this procedure done.
- 16:55Don't you think that that would happen all the time
- 16:58that you would run into your ex and be like,
- 17:00oh, hey, and they'd be like, who are you?
- 17:04- 'Cause he doesn't actually know
- 17:05that she doesn't recognize him.
- 17:07He just thinks that she's ignoring him.
- 17:10- Yeah, that's true.
- 17:11He doesn't realize it until his friends tell him.
- 17:14- Yeah, and tell his sister and her husband tell him.
- 17:18But so, yeah, it's ultimately,
- 17:21I mean, if you've ever seen pictures
- 17:24or stills or clips of this show,
- 17:27Kate Winslet as Clementine is so iconic.
- 17:31I'm obsessed with her.
- 17:32- With her blue hair.
- 17:34- With her orange hair.
- 17:35- And so my favorite is her red hair
- 17:38when she has the fire engine red hair.
- 17:41- Yeah, I like that too.
- 17:41- But she has so many good ones.
- 17:43She has a span of multi-colored hair.
- 17:47She has her typical blue hair liberal living in New York City.
- 17:52She might be the blueprint of blue hair liberals,
- 17:55but she starts the movie and you look at her
- 17:58and you really think, oh, this is just like
- 18:00a manic pixie dream girl.
- 18:02- Exactly.
- 18:03- She is weird.
- 18:04She's quirky.
- 18:05She has all of these things.
- 18:07But one thing that I really love about the writing
- 18:09of this film is it really subverts that
- 18:13and flips it on its head.
- 18:15And she actually has a really famous monologue
- 18:17that they show in the movie.
- 18:19I'm just a fucked up girl living in her own world.
- 18:22And then she says, wow, I really read you right then.
- 18:25Like you have this sense of fourth wall breaking
- 18:29as well within their memories and their moments.
- 18:32And I would say Joel, Jim Carrey's character,
- 18:36is like this sad boy who isn't responsible
- 18:41for his own actions and his own sadness.
- 18:45I think it's just really up the time.
- 18:48- Yeah, I agree.
- 18:49And the manic pixie dream girl,
- 18:50I mean, I'm sure everyone's heard that term by now,
- 18:53but it's kind of that weird quirky girl
- 18:56that every guy wants to date.
- 18:58She's a guy's girl.
- 19:00She doesn't fit in with the other girls.
- 19:02She's smart and well-read and likes the pixies.
- 19:06And dress is fun.
- 19:08And like, she rescues him from his boring life
- 19:12and then they live a life of wonder together.
- 19:14And I mean, she does fit a lot of those tropes,
- 19:17but at the same time, Clementine is fucked up, right?
- 19:20She's depressed, she's angry, she's impulsive,
- 19:23she's annoying.
- 19:25She's annoying as all get out.
- 19:27But like it works for her.
- 19:29And they balance each other out so well
- 19:32because he is bored and depressed and sad.
- 19:35And she's impulsive and depressed and sad, right?
- 19:40So they kind of fill in each other's gaps.
- 19:43- Yeah, and like we've mentioned in the beginning,
- 19:45like it is a non-linear timeline.
- 19:48So we see them meeting and ultimately,
- 19:52you see Clementine is like this really self-assured,
- 19:55confident woman who is like unapologetically her
- 20:00and just like so upfront.
- 20:03And then Joel, who's very like in their head and things like that.
- 20:07And you see them meet, which we think is for the first time
- 20:10in the movie as well.
- 20:12And then we start to go back through this like mind-erasing process
- 20:16and you start to see how imperfect their relationship was.
- 20:21- You're watching their relationship backwards.
- 20:25So like it starts, it's,
- 20:27while Joel is in bed with Mark Buffalo and Elijah Wood
- 20:33erasing his memory and then eventually Kirsten Dunst shows up
- 20:36to dance round in her underpants and complicate matters more.
- 20:41But yeah, you start with like his most recent memory
- 20:44of their last fight and then kind of go backwards
- 20:48through the relationship until, you know,
- 20:50we get into all the beginning and the happy memories.
- 20:54And then her hair kind of gives you like the audience
- 20:57a hint of where and the timeline this is too
- 21:00because she dies her hair so often.
- 21:03And when we first meet her, it's that blue color.
- 21:06And we think that that's when they meet, but it's not.
- 21:09- Yeah, her hair is such an interesting thing as well
- 21:14because when they're together, it's always this hollered color.
- 21:18She's very like intentional about that.
- 21:21But as we know, she's had her mind erase, Joel erased from her life.
- 21:26She starts to let like her blue hair really grow out
- 21:29and things like that.
- 21:30And God gives us this kind of like point in time narration.
- 21:35But I think what this movie does so well is,
- 21:39it really has a lot of different questions
- 21:42that it's asking you.
- 21:44And like it's trying to say a lot.
- 21:46Like I think that one of the core themes
- 21:49that I see within this movie is love
- 21:51isn't meant to be perfect.
- 21:53- Yeah.
- 21:53- And the ending of this movie,
- 21:56which if you haven't seen this movie
- 21:58you're listening to this, we're spoiled.
- 22:01The ending is insane because they literally hear tapes
- 22:05of themselves like describing the reasons
- 22:07that their relationship failed
- 22:08and why they shouldn't be together.
- 22:10And they decide ultimately to try again.
- 22:15- It's so serendipitous that they meet again, right?
- 22:18Like the thing that we see in the beginning
- 22:21is actually them coming back together
- 22:23after they've had their memories erased.
- 22:26And still just being so drawn to each other
- 22:29and her being like, have I met you before?
- 22:32Like there's still there's just like a cosmic pool
- 22:35between the two of them.
- 22:36And I love like him dropping her off
- 22:39and then Elijah Woods character coming up to the car
- 22:42and being like, can I help you?
- 22:45And Jim Carrey or Joel has no idea who this man is
- 22:49or why he's asking him that.
- 22:51And as a person watching the movie for the first time
- 22:53you're like, why is he asking in that?
- 22:55He's just dropped this girl off.
- 22:58But Elijah Woods like seriously
- 23:00after we did all this work, after I did all of this work
- 23:04to erase them from each other and swoop in and steal her.
- 23:07He's still fucking shows up.
- 23:08He's still, they still find a way back to each other.
- 23:11- Yeah, I think one of the really interesting things
- 23:14of this movie is it's asking our soulmates
- 23:19are like two people faded to be together.
- 23:22And even if we lose our memory of one another,
- 23:27are we still meant to be?
- 23:29And what does that look like?
- 23:30And I still to this day, like every time I watch it
- 23:33think differently or is it that their memories
- 23:37like weren't actually erased well enough
- 23:39and there were still those things.
- 23:41Does the body like continue to feel those things?
- 23:44Is it facial memory?
- 23:46Yeah, you know, all of those different things.
- 23:50But I think it is really like a Rorschach test
- 23:53of where you are in that moment in time.
- 23:56I think that I've always really looked at things differently
- 24:00like when I was young, Guren, I first saw this.
- 24:03I saw it as like, wow, they're soulmates.
- 24:05They're meant to be together.
- 24:06And then it's like, okay, as I get older,
- 24:09like if that changes.
- 24:10- Yeah, or like where you are in a,
- 24:13if you're in a relationship or not
- 24:15or how you're doing, right?
- 24:16Like, or yeah, how old you are.
- 24:18If I, you know, watched this as a love struck teenager,
- 24:23oh, there's soulmates.
- 24:24They're meant to be.
- 24:25And now that I'm watching it as a 37 year old woman
- 24:29who is deeply in love in a committed relationship,
- 24:32even I'm still just like, are they gonna work out?
- 24:36I don't know if I'm supposed to.
- 24:37Like they annoy each other constantly.
- 24:39They fight constantly.
- 24:41And there has to be more to a relationship
- 24:43than just being in love and whimsy,
- 24:46you know, you got to put in the hard work.
- 24:47So, yeah.
- 24:49- Well, I think like ultimately,
- 24:52like the movie is asking,
- 24:55can you remove pain without also like removing joy
- 25:00and intimacy and ultimately like who you are, right?
- 25:04So like, my brother and I read this book,
- 25:08it's called the Midnight Library, very, very good.
- 25:10And it's essentially like if you could go back to any point
- 25:15in time and start like pick up living your life
- 25:19as if you had made that decision
- 25:21or you didn't do this, would you be happy in that life?
- 25:24You don't get to like live from that moment on,
- 25:26you just drop into like the world where you are today.
- 25:29And would you be the same person?
- 25:32And I think I loved that book so much
- 25:34because it really asked that question of like,
- 25:37are you who you are if you removed all of those bad things
- 25:41that happened to you?
- 25:42Like I guess would you to the stay knowing where you are,
- 25:46go back and like erase the worst relationship you've been in?
- 25:51- Yeah.
- 25:52And would you?
- 25:54Would I? - I think that would be interesting.
- 25:56- No, I've been thinking about that for days
- 25:58'cause I knew we were gonna bring that up.
- 25:59Like would I remove the worst relationship I was ever in?
- 26:03And no, like it, you know, I had to,
- 26:06I would therapy about that relationship.
- 26:10(laughing)
- 26:12It turned, you know, it probably created some bad habits
- 26:16in me and ways that I thought about myself for years.
- 26:20But even so, I think that it like turned me into the woman
- 26:23that I am today and how I stand up for myself.
- 26:26And I would be too afraid of the ripple,
- 26:28like the butterfly effect.
- 26:30Like if I went back and changed, or not even changed it
- 26:33'cause it still happened, right?
- 26:34Or just erased it from my memory.
- 26:37Yeah, like what person would I be today?
- 26:39Would I be with Andrew, right?
- 26:42Like would I find my way to him if I forgot all the lessons
- 26:46that I had learned from that previous relationship?
- 26:49There's also a scene in the movie
- 26:51where Joel first goes to, what is it,
- 26:54Lunatic or something?
- 26:56- Lunatic.
- 26:57- La Cuna.
- 26:58- La Cuna, thank you, Lunatic, Lunatic.
- 27:01- He first goes to, of course.
- 27:04- He first goes to La Cuna and he sees a lady sitting there
- 27:07with a box of like, what is supposed to be maybe like a dead dog's
- 27:12stuff, like it has her dog's bowl in it and a collar
- 27:15and like a bone sticking out and she's just crying.
- 27:17And I was like, how could she?
- 27:20Like, how could she?
- 27:22- How could she moments of like people
- 27:25like looking at their kids?
- 27:27- Yeah.
- 27:28- Maybe like a kid who died really early.
- 27:31Like it is a good question of like grief as well
- 27:35on top of like failed relationships, right?
- 27:38- Yeah, and there's such a difference there
- 27:40because like your dog didn't ask to,
- 27:43your dog didn't break up with you when it died, right?
- 27:46- Yeah.
- 27:47- It was just like the natural circle of life.
- 27:48Like your kid didn't ask to die or break up with you.
- 27:52They just died like same with like a,
- 27:54to see spouse or parent, right?
- 27:56So unless your dog did break up with you,
- 28:00your dog one day is like, Susan,
- 28:03you've been feeding me at least 30 minutes late everyday,
- 28:08bitch.
- 28:09- 'Cause that one happens when a dog runs away.
- 28:11They're just breaking up with you.
- 28:14Whenever my dog runs away in the Sims,
- 28:16I'm always like, I'm such a good dog mom.
- 28:19I take you to the vet every time you turn polka dots
- 28:22or get a red nose.
- 28:23(laughing)
- 28:25What the fuck?
- 28:27I beat you so many times.
- 28:28Anyway, we digress.
- 28:30But like in a relationship, yeah, you do break up
- 28:35with each other, right?
- 28:37Can you think of anything in your life
- 28:41that you would want to forget?
- 28:43Even if it wasn't a relationship.
- 28:46- I think in the moment,
- 28:49I could have probably been like impulsive like clementine
- 28:53to be like, you brace this, make me not feel it.
- 28:56I think in hindsight, no.
- 28:59Like what comes to mind when I was younger
- 29:03is like I had a restraining order on someone, right?
- 29:06And where I'm like, oh, could I go back and like,
- 29:09ebrae's that?
- 29:10I think when, again, Rocha touched
- 29:12when I was younger, yes, now I'm like, absolutely not.
- 29:15And I think those moments really do change you.
- 29:20And I think that this movie really talks about memory
- 29:24and appreciation of the things that you've been through,
- 29:28both bad and good.
- 29:30- Yeah, and returns you into a deep.
- 29:33- You know what would be cool though,
- 29:35is if you could make someone else forget something about you,
- 29:38that I will do.
- 29:39- Oh, that would be so.
- 29:40- Yeah.
- 29:41- If I was like, oh my God, I want everyone to forget
- 29:44that I tripped in that dance recital in the seventh grade.
- 29:47- Oop.
- 29:48- Or I want everyone to forget about that stupid thing
- 29:51I said after too many cocktails.
- 29:53- And I just didn't remember that I shit my pants.
- 29:57I love if I could have everyone forget that time,
- 30:00I shit my pants.
- 30:01Now I would have to erase a lot of memories.
- 30:04- Yeah, you'd be just straight wife and you'd have
- 30:06like a wife and I'm subscribed to the game.
- 30:08- Just like I would wipe my ass, just wife and memory.
- 30:10Just you forget, you've.
- 30:13- Yeah, I think that's cool.
- 30:15- That's what it's really, really interesting to like think
- 30:20about what this movie is saying.
- 30:21And it's also asking the question of like,
- 30:24did you appreciate the good moments
- 30:27until they were disappearing, right?
- 30:29Like even in the end of a relationship,
- 30:32like he's like, oh, all of it was bad,
- 30:34all of it was negative and then as it starts to be taken away
- 30:38from him slowly, he's like, no, wait, this person
- 30:41is actually amazing.
- 30:42I love them.
- 30:43And you know, like those tiny moments,
- 30:45like going to the grocery store, getting jewelry,
- 30:48like silly amounts of opening up,
- 30:50like I think that it really does talk about
- 30:53how memory is so tied to emotion and things like that.
- 30:57- Yeah, let's take a quick little break
- 31:00and then we'll get more into this deep memory talk
- 31:03'cause I'm really loving this.
- 31:04(dramatic music)
- 31:07So before we return to talking about the eternal sunshine

- 31:49a subscribe or rating really, really helps.
- 31:51So as we just yapped forever,
- 31:55let's get back into eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.
- 32:00- Okay, I have a question for you.
- 32:02And I think that this is kind of at the end of the movie,
- 32:07when they do kind of watch through their tapes
- 32:09and realize that they do wanna stay together,
- 32:12these little tiny moments that you mentioned
- 32:14are romanticized with them, right?
- 32:16The buying, the necklace,
- 32:17they're going to the grocery store, just the small things.
- 32:19And I think that like when you break up with somebody
- 32:22or when you end a relationship or even a friendship,
- 32:25we can so often think back to like tiny little things
- 32:30and only focus on those and then be like,
- 32:34oh, but maybe we should get back together.
- 32:35We used to laugh together so much
- 32:38or maybe we should get back together.
- 32:40We loved that restaurant.
- 32:42We always had the best noodles there together, right?
- 32:44And just realize that just because happy memories
- 32:48does not equal compatibility and a relationship, right?
- 32:53I feel like I've had moments like that too where I think back
- 32:58and I'm like, oh, I really, I should call her,
- 33:01you know, we had so much fun during that trip
- 33:04to blah, blah, blah together and then I'm like, wait, no.
- 33:07That friendship ended.
- 33:08- I wouldn't have thought about it.
- 33:10- She was so cool and she was a fried squid in my wedding.
- 33:13And then I'm like, no, that relationship fizzled out in time.
- 33:16And like, just because I have those happy memories
- 33:19doesn't mean I need to reconcile, right?
- 33:21Like just because you have those happy memories,
- 33:25you know, that's a good thing you can hold onto those
- 33:26but it doesn't mean you need to reach back out to the person
- 33:29and reconcile.
- 33:30Does that make sense?
- 33:32- Yeah, I agree.
- 33:33- I completely agree.
- 33:34No, I think that's why this movie is so interesting, right?
- 33:39Is it fate or is it a toxic pattern?
- 33:43And you being drawn to the same emotional dynamics
- 33:48that ultimately you have told yourself
- 33:52are not good for you, but you are going back in for it.
- 33:55Like is it destiny?
- 33:56Is it fate or is it comfortable?
- 33:59Even though you've forgotten them in this situation.
- 34:03Like, I guess the question is, do you think Joel
- 34:06and Clementine are still together?
- 34:08- No.
- 34:09- Okay, yeah.
- 34:10- No.
- 34:11What's really, really interesting is there is an alternate
- 34:15script ending that was interesting
- 34:17where in the original script of the Eternal Zone
- 34:20to turn in the sparrows mind,
- 34:21you see Joel and Clementine well into their old age
- 34:25erasing each other frequently.
- 34:27- Yeah, see, I feel like this is gonna be a loop for them.
- 34:31They are gonna find each other and erase each other
- 34:34over and over again because Clementine is so impulsive
- 34:39and in her emotions, right?
- 34:41And then Joel is gonna get so hurt every time
- 34:45that she should do it to exactly that it's just,
- 34:49God, they're gonna have major Alzheimer's, but the end.
- 34:53Oh my God.
- 34:53- Oh my God.
- 34:54- He's like, there's cause brain damage.
- 34:56The procedure in this is--
- 34:57- And the brain damage.
- 34:59- Yeah, they're just like taking whipits to the face
- 35:03every time they do this procedure.
- 35:05- But, you know what, Kirsten Dunn's character is the
- 35:09secretary and she's on the phone and the lady,
- 35:11she's talking to somebody and we don't hear the other sign,
- 35:14she's like, you can't do it three times in one month, ma'am.
- 35:18- Yes, yeah.
- 35:20- You have to wait until next month.
- 35:22I'm like, God damn, this woman is just making mistakes
- 35:25left and right.
- 35:26Like,
- 35:27- Well, I feel that get almost be addicting to,
- 35:31- Yeah.
- 35:32- Like, have that ability to a race pain,
- 35:37to race a negative emotion, ultimately,
- 35:39because it's pain, it's anxiety, it's uncomfortableness,
- 35:43and is it like, ultimately like a drug, right?
- 35:47Like, it becomes addictive and you start to see these things
- 35:52and is it better to never love,
- 35:56- To have loved and lost,
- 35:59than have never loved at all.
- 36:00- Yeah, and I think that's ultimately like what this,
- 36:03this movie really, really asks you.
- 36:05- I was just thinking too.
- 36:07I feel like I'm high now.
- 36:09I'm like, would I?
- 36:11- It's not gonna be your high.
- 36:12- If I knew I could erase the memory of something,
- 36:14would I take the risk and just do it
- 36:16and then erase the memory afterwards?
- 36:18But then I'm like, no,
- 36:19'cause you would still have to experience the consequences
- 36:21of people around you.
- 36:23Like, you know, like, if I wanted to run through the streets
- 36:27naked and screaming,
- 36:28but then I, yeah, I'll just erase the memory.
- 36:31Like, yeah, I feel like if I were a doctor,
- 36:35you're doing those procedures.
- 36:37I'd be like, that'd be dangerous.
- 36:38I'd just be like trying to be like,
- 36:41you could do a little brain damage right here.
- 36:43- Literally, I'm like, so no,
- 36:45I can't just go and do something impulsive
- 36:48and then just erase it because then the next day,
- 36:50everyone's gonna be like,
- 36:51"Shanna, you like, you were insane yesterday."
- 36:56And I'd be like, what do you mean?
- 36:58- Yeah, and ultimately in the movie,
- 37:03Kirsten Dunst, as we mentioned, is in this,
- 37:06and she's a secretary for La Cuna.
- 37:08And she's like, kind of obsessed with the main doctor
- 37:13in this movie.
- 37:14- He's so thrilled.
- 37:15- He's so thrilled.
- 37:16And she's definitely got like a crush on him
- 37:17and she's like, oh, he's so smart
- 37:20and he's like an old, funny, dirty, you know?
- 37:23- He's not that special.
- 37:24He's not like a hot silver fox.
- 37:26He's just an old dude.
- 37:28- And so in this, like you're kind of like,
- 37:31oh, she definitely like wants him,
- 37:32but she's hooking up with Mark Ruppell's character.
- 37:35And throughout the course of Joel's procedure,
- 37:38we discovered that the doctor and her had actually
- 37:42been in a relationship together.
- 37:44- At an affair.
- 37:45- Yes.
- 37:46And she asked him to erase her mind
- 37:49and continued working there.
- 37:51- Yeah.
- 37:52- Which is so fucking stupid of him and the wife.
- 37:54If I were the wife, I would have been like,
- 37:55no way the bitch would still work in there.
- 37:57- Yeah, right.
- 37:58Like, just because she doesn't remember,
- 38:00doesn't mean that the consequences of her actions
- 38:03are still there.
- 38:04Exactly.
- 38:05Like she might have forgot, but the pain that she caused,
- 38:08I mean, knowing that he caused, like it is still raw
- 38:12and he knows that he slept with her
- 38:14and that they had an affair.
- 38:15Like, yeah, it's so messy.
- 38:18- Yeah, I've been like, what?
- 38:21I think that is really, really interesting
- 38:22because Kirsten Dunst throughout the entire movie
- 38:25is a very willing participant in helping other people
- 38:29do this, right?
- 38:30Like, she's like, yes, it's amazing.
- 38:32She's like, believe in this.
- 38:34- She's like, believe in this.
- 38:34Yeah, she's a big believer in it.
- 38:36And then it happens to her and she flips her script
- 38:41and ultimately sends everyone their tapes
- 38:43and reminds them that they wanted to do this
- 38:46and she thinks that they should know.
- 38:48Which I think is also an interesting point it's making.
- 38:52Where it's like, they're like in this hypothetical world,
- 38:54there are people who are profiting off of it,
- 38:56but then it happens to them.
- 38:58And the answer to that question is very different.
- 39:00Whenever it's them themselves.
- 39:02- Yeah.
- 39:03Dude, I imagine all hell breaking loose in this society.
- 39:07Like, she was pretty much a lot of--
- 39:09- She was pretty much a sense of--
- 39:10- Yeah, like a lot of those letters went out.
- 39:12It shows that printer printing out a ton.
- 39:14So a lot of people have gone through this procedure, right?
- 39:18So like, if you just, I don't know,
- 39:20I feel like people would just be losing their goddamn mind.
- 39:23It's like, I did what?
- 39:25Soon died.
- 39:26Oh God, like who am I?
- 39:28- I erased my dead child.
- 39:30- Oh my God, I'm out of kid.
- 39:32I had a dog.
- 39:32- Yeah.
- 39:34- That's not what I feel that way.
- 39:36- Every one of you just peeing all the time.
- 39:39I got a kid.
- 39:39- I shit my pants how many times.
- 39:42Oh my God, what now?
- 39:43Every day.
- 39:46I haven't been to a gastrointestinal doctor.
- 39:50I have a medical condition.
- 39:52My God.
- 39:53- So funny.
- 39:58It's so good.
- 39:59- It came back to pants.
- 40:00It came back to pants again.
- 40:01- It came back to pants.
- 40:02It came back to pants.
- 40:03We are in a non-linear storytelling here.
- 40:07But-- - Oh yeah, I think that.
- 40:08- It would be a good point of, if you've forgotten,
- 40:13like if you've erased the lessons,
- 40:15are you destined to repeat them until you learn them?
- 40:19- I think personally in my own life.
- 40:21- Yeah.
- 40:22- Yeah.
- 40:23- Sometimes I learn the same lesson five times.
- 40:26- That's the only thing.
- 40:27- I had to keep dating the same version
- 40:31of a very terrible man until I had to take a step back
- 40:34and be like, "Okay, you're the best man here."
- 40:37- It reminds me of someone.
- 40:40- Wait a check.
- 40:41Wait a check.
- 40:42- Wait a minute.
- 40:42- Wait a minute.
- 40:43- Wait a minute.
- 40:44- Yeah.
- 40:45- And it wasn't until I took a step back
- 40:47and really looked at the reality of those things
- 40:50and felt my way through my own responsibility
- 40:55in the days of relationships as well.
- 40:59And how I was also a contributing factor.
- 41:02So yeah, I think that this movie is just so beautiful.
- 41:06It's so-- - I agree.
- 41:07- It's so provoking.
- 41:08And it is a script wildly of its time,
- 41:13but still holds up.
- 41:15- I agree.
- 41:16It's definitely very like two,
- 41:18that early 2000s hipster along with like,
- 41:20garden stay, you know.
- 41:22- Yes.
- 41:23- And I've rented it at the blockbuster.
- 41:26But it does still hold up.
- 41:28Like I just watched it two nights ago, whatever.
- 41:30And I was like, "I remember why I liked this movie so much."
- 41:33- Yeah, it's amazing.
- 41:34I truly wanted to be Clementine so bad when I was in a great--
- 41:38- Oh my God.
- 41:39- I still think she is so iconic.
- 41:41- She's amazing.
- 41:42- Massie and Oliver.
- 41:43- Massie and all.
- 41:44And you know, I did what rewatch it and say,
- 41:47"Should I dive in here, fire in the red?"
- 41:51- You do that and I'll do the blue.
- 41:53I mean, I already have crazy--
- 41:54- Yeah, you could throw the blue in there, easy.
- 41:57- See, I would have to go fully bleach blonde again
- 42:02and my hair really didn't like that when I--
- 42:04- I just bleached blonde from purple hair.
- 42:07- Yeah, I just bleached to this little part.
- 42:09But I was already-- - That's your bangs.
- 42:12- If that doesn't have to go all the way to--
- 42:14- Yeah. - To patch your shoulder blade.
- 42:15- Your entire head would be expensive and time consuming.
- 42:19(laughing)
- 42:20- Maybe I'll just copy and do money pieces.
- 42:23- That'd be so cute, too.
- 42:24- That would be cute.
- 42:25- That would be cute.
- 42:26- We should just keep copying each other.
- 42:28People already think we're sisters anyway.
- 42:30- Yeah, you know, a shana dyed her bangs.
- 42:33So I dyed my hair as well.
- 42:35But yeah, I think that ultimately,
- 42:38like I could keep talking about this movie forever.
- 42:41- I'm curious for anyone listening what your thoughts are.
- 42:45Really what you think,
- 42:47the what the film is trying to say,
- 42:50what things you think that we missed.
- 42:54- And would you erase?
- 42:56- Yeah, would you erase someone?
- 42:58- Yeah, or a painful awkward bad in your life.
- 43:00- Yeah, also what is your favorite clomantine hair color?
- 43:03I think those are the important ones.
- 43:06The moment where-- - Oh, and how do you put on your pants?
- 43:09- How do you put on your pants?
- 43:10- Yeah, the moment where she has the little space buns
- 43:14with the double tropsticks in them.
- 43:17- And the tendrils.
- 43:18So cute. - Yes, so good.
- 43:21- So good.
- 43:22You know, Ariana Grande agrees.
- 43:24She did do an album, "Aternal Sunshine."
- 43:27- Yeah, not as good as the Circus her five album,
- 43:29but that's okay.
- 43:30- Yeah, well, forgive her.
- 43:32This is also like Ariana Grande's favorite,
- 43:34one of her favorite movies.
- 43:36And I think that really checks out.
- 43:38- It does. - For everything.
- 43:40- She's also obsessed with Jim Carrey,
- 43:42just like us, just like us.
- 43:44- He's so fine, so hot.
- 43:46- And Kate Winslet in this movie.
- 43:48- Oh, yeah.
- 43:49- She's gorgeous too.
- 43:50Kirsten Dunst is gorgeous.
- 43:52Mark Ruffalo, "I Have A Huge Crouch On Elijah Wood."
- 43:55- But he's really creepy.
- 43:57- I was so proud of her.
- 43:57- Grrly.
- 43:58- Grrly is just moving.
- 43:59- Grrly is just moving.
- 44:00- Oh, we didn't even talk about this.
- 44:01It's really interesting.
- 44:03So I think that Elijah Wood is also like a great part
- 44:08of this, is it fade or is it a pattern?
- 44:11Because Elijah Wood tries to steal those same moments.
- 44:15- He's forcing himself in.
- 44:17- Yeah, but they don't hit the same, right?
- 44:20So it's like what makes connection and love?
- 44:23See, I'm starting again.
- 44:24He's faking it.
- 44:25- He's faking it the whole time.
- 44:27- Yeah, yeah, you know, but great, great movie.
- 44:31Ultimately, really, really love it.
