- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm going to recruit this Welcome to the note party.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hi, this is Nick and Ostasu, story editor on Star Wars,
- 0:10Speaker 2: The Clone Wars and Star Wars bad Batch, and you
- 0:14Speaker 2: are listening to aggressive negotiations.
- 0:24Speaker 3: That's right, it's aggressive negotiations. The Star Wars podcast that
- 0:28Speaker 3: delves into nooks, crannies and crevice's you never knew existed
- 0:32Speaker 3: in the galaxy far far away. I am one of
- 0:34Speaker 3: your humble hosts, Jedi Master John Mills and joining me
- 0:37Speaker 3: on this journey once more, forever more. Possibly don't know
- 0:42Speaker 3: we lost the map on how to get out of Hyperspace,
- 0:45Speaker 3: Jedi Master Matthew Rushing, Matt, do you know where the
- 0:48Speaker 3: damn map is?
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'm panicking here. I was laughing when you said crevices.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I was like, did we get lost in one of
- 0:56Speaker 4: the fold some job of the hut here?
- 0:59Speaker 3: You know what if that's where the topics are, that's
- 1:02Speaker 3: where we're going, Matt. That people should expect that by
- 1:05Speaker 3: this point with this show, And something that they should
- 1:09Speaker 3: also expect is that if they're enjoying the show, they
- 1:12Speaker 3: should go over to Apple Podcasts and drop us a
- 1:15Speaker 3: rating and review. Look, we know that we ask so
- 1:18Speaker 3: much of everybody to go over and tiel star rating
- 1:21Speaker 3: and review.
- 1:22Speaker 1: But it's all we ask of you.
- 1:24Speaker 3: All we will ever ask of you, and we would
- 1:26Speaker 3: appreciate it if you did. And Matt, we have another
- 1:30Speaker 3: one of our surprise topics sort.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Of nights going on.
- 1:33Speaker 3: We'll having a little bit of fun with this, and
- 1:35Speaker 3: you know what, first and foremost, before we get into
- 1:37Speaker 3: the topic, I just want to say, from Matt and
- 1:40Speaker 3: myself out to everybody, we hope everybody's doing okay, all right, yeah,
- 1:44Speaker 3: genuine side noe. Just I know it's weird to open
- 1:48Speaker 3: the show like this, but you know what, here we
- 1:50Speaker 3: are in summer twenty twenty five and everybody just seems
- 1:53Speaker 3: to get more and more angsty. Let's be more Jedi,
- 1:57Speaker 3: let's be more Qui Gone going forward, and let's let's
- 2:00Speaker 3: roll with little.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Mar Yeah, let's go a little more zen out there,
- 2:03Speaker 4: you know.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yeah, a little a little bit more zen, a little
- 2:05Speaker 3: bit more zen. Even Yoda in the sixth season of
- 2:08Speaker 3: The Clone Wars realized, you know, everything's going to work
- 2:12Speaker 3: out too, shall pass, That's right, But what won't pass
- 2:17Speaker 3: is this idea that I have in my head for
- 2:19Speaker 3: what we're going to talk about, which comes from a
- 2:20Speaker 3: conversation we were having before we started recording. Okay, so
- 2:25Speaker 3: you mentioned how a friend of ours, Yancey, and myself
- 2:29Speaker 3: just listened to a brand new audiobook interpretation of Shadows
- 2:35Speaker 3: of the Empire. Now, you and I, there's an episode
- 2:37Speaker 3: of Aggressive Negotiations. We'll reference it in the show notes
- 2:41Speaker 3: that you can go back and listen to us rereading it.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I just went and I listened to this audiobook and
- 2:48Speaker 3: I enjoyed it more this time than the last time.
- 2:52Speaker 1: You know, you can try our meetings and everything like that.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I did. I enjoyed it more. It was fun. It
- 2:56Speaker 1: was a lot of fun.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Really captured the spirit that maybe I was missing on
- 3:00Speaker 3: the most recent reread.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Anyway. Two questions.
- 3:04Speaker 3: First question, do you think that this is going to
- 3:09Speaker 3: generate a rebirth of interest in Star Wars books, which
- 3:12Speaker 3: has flagged over recent years by revisiting the classics and
- 3:17Speaker 3: making them available as audio editions. And two, given the
- 3:22Speaker 3: podcast streaming audiobooks Spotify environment, do you think it's time
- 3:29Speaker 3: for Lucasfilm finally to re embrace the radio drama, which
- 3:34Speaker 3: they did so well with the original trilogy.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I love this question, John, and you know, I think
- 3:41Speaker 4: back to a few years ago. I'd been reviewing the
- 3:48Speaker 4: Star Wars books for the longest time, and one of
- 3:51Speaker 4: the things that they they did was they did that
- 3:56Speaker 4: Dooku Jedi Lost audio drama, which is, yeah, phenomenal. The
- 4:02Speaker 4: production value is fantastic, h and you know, a full
- 4:06Speaker 4: cast and all the sound effects and everything like that
- 4:10Speaker 4: so well done. And you know, I grew up listening
- 4:12Speaker 4: to audio dramas as well as as a kid. I
- 4:16Speaker 4: loved them like a radio show that I would I
- 4:19Speaker 4: would listen to all the time, my sister and I
- 4:21Speaker 4: and so I'm predisposed to love this stuff, right, And
- 4:26Speaker 4: so when this came out, I thought it was a
- 4:30Speaker 4: great medium to dive into because it was almost like
- 4:33Speaker 4: listening to an episode of the Clone Wars right in
- 4:37Speaker 4: in a format where they just did such a good job.
- 4:41Speaker 4: So I think that there really is something to this
- 4:44Speaker 4: to to be able to create stories in this this
- 4:49Speaker 4: type of format that like the Extended Universe novels that
- 4:53Speaker 4: we loved, you know, started with Air to the Empire
- 4:57Speaker 4: and beyond, you know, to go back and tell stories
- 5:03Speaker 4: in this manner that can fill in those wonderful little
- 5:08Speaker 4: gaps that we have in all of these characters' lives,
- 5:11Speaker 4: I think is pretty fantastic. And obviously, you know, one
- 5:14Speaker 4: of the things that has been kind of filling that
- 5:16Speaker 4: kind of void is you know, the Tales of series
- 5:20Speaker 4: that they've been doing in animation, which both of you
- 5:24Speaker 4: and I very big fans of. We've we've been you know,
- 5:29Speaker 4: big proponents of people going to watch those. It's great stuff.
- 5:33Speaker 4: But this I think is really an untapped medium to
- 5:38Speaker 4: be able to tell Star Wars stories uh and really
- 5:42Speaker 4: interesting and powerful ways, and to experience Star Wars uh,
- 5:47Speaker 4: you know, in in new and fascinating ways. And I
- 5:51Speaker 4: am surprised that we haven't gotten more of this. Now
- 5:54Speaker 4: they have to their to their credit, uh, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 4: Star Wars has done this in other series. They did
- 6:05Speaker 4: this in the High Republic series. They actually did a
- 6:08Speaker 4: couple of audio dramas and people seem to like those.
- 6:11Speaker 4: So it's not as though they have not continued this.
- 6:14Speaker 4: But I'm surprised that we don't have a more regular
- 6:17Speaker 4: like every year, you know, one of these comes out.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Right, and that I think hits the nail on the
- 6:23Speaker 3: head is especially in the crowded content field. We were
- 6:28Speaker 3: talking about this in a whole different context. Recently, in
- 6:32Speaker 3: a crowded content field, content's just getting more and more hectic,
- 6:36Speaker 3: and it's just more and more of just a fire
- 6:40Speaker 3: hose turned on everybody. And the only shot you have
- 6:44Speaker 3: at keeping your IP alive is you have to flood
- 6:48Speaker 3: the content in. And the thing is, I will I
- 6:51Speaker 3: will throw Stranger Things under the bus right now. I
- 6:54Speaker 3: understand there are different production considerations and stuff like that,
- 6:58Speaker 3: but any TV show, not just Stranger Things, but any
- 7:01Speaker 3: TV show which has taken two to three year breaks. Yep,
- 7:05Speaker 3: that's why people cool on these things. The whole reason
- 7:08Speaker 3: that you go back to the golden era of television,
- 7:12Speaker 3: which I contend goes through the nineteen nineties, are agreed,
- 7:17Speaker 3: and maybe even the early two thousands, is you had
- 7:20Speaker 3: something every single week. When something caught on, you could
- 7:23Speaker 3: hammer people with it. You can't let up on the gas.
- 7:26Speaker 3: So to your point, yes, I should have a new
- 7:29Speaker 3: audiobook on a regular basis. I should have a subscription
- 7:32Speaker 3: feed on a regular basis. They should be making it
- 7:34Speaker 3: available through Disney Plus or little tastes of it on
- 7:37Speaker 3: Disney Plus, where it's like, hey, check out our audio books.
- 7:40Speaker 3: They have all of these outlets open to them and
- 7:42Speaker 3: they don't take advantage of them, which blows my mind.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And in terms of, like, you know, radio dramas, wouldn't
- 7:49Speaker 3: it be great just we just had the renaissance with
- 7:52Speaker 3: the anniversary re releases, a Phantom Menace and Revenge of
- 7:56Speaker 3: the Sith. Yeah, let's do a radio drama, guys, come on?
- 8:00Speaker 4: Yeah, No, I think that is actually a fantastic idea
- 8:06Speaker 4: because in that you know what you can do, especially
- 8:10Speaker 4: you know, you think of creating a radio drama that's
- 8:13Speaker 4: based off of Stover's Episode three novelization. Oh my gosh,
- 8:19Speaker 4: can you imagine how? Because that novelization is the high
- 8:23Speaker 4: water mark of Star Wars novelizations. It's up there with
- 8:30Speaker 4: the greatest of Star Wars books because what it did
- 8:33Speaker 4: is it took one of the very best Star Wars
- 8:36Speaker 4: movies that was ever made and it made it even better,
- 8:40Speaker 4: right because it gave you that insight into the characters
- 8:46Speaker 4: with that moment, this is Anakin Skywalker, this is Obi
- 8:50Speaker 4: wan Kenobi, which filled in those places that you always
- 8:55Speaker 4: wanted to go and allows you to experience the characters
- 8:58Speaker 4: that you would always love in a way that expanded
- 9:03Speaker 4: your knowledge of who they were by getting to explore
- 9:08Speaker 4: pieces of information that brought them to life in a
- 9:14Speaker 4: whole new way. And so I couldn't imagine a better way,
- 9:18Speaker 4: you know, to then celebrate Star Wars than by doing
- 9:22Speaker 4: something like you just mentioned well.
- 9:25Speaker 3: And I think additionally, you know, you go back to
- 9:28Speaker 3: the original Star Wars radio dramas and Jedi unfortunately doesn't
- 9:34Speaker 3: live up to the first two, and it's because they
- 9:35Speaker 3: took so long to get around to it. There were
- 9:37Speaker 3: only six episodes. Brian Daley was ill at the time
- 9:40Speaker 3: their hold. But it's fun in its own regard. But
- 9:44Speaker 3: I go back to Star Wars and Empire, and there
- 9:47Speaker 3: are so many things that are different. It embraced the
- 9:52Speaker 3: fact that the medium was different. It frees you up
- 9:54Speaker 3: in a certain way, and I think it allows you
- 9:58Speaker 3: to do certain things where other act get the opportunity
- 10:01Speaker 3: to perform these beloved characters and bring their own spin
- 10:06Speaker 3: on things. And in addition to their own spin, you
- 10:09Speaker 3: get to the essence of what makes the character the character.
- 10:14Speaker 3: If I change the actor who's playing the character, doesn't
- 10:16Speaker 3: change the character.
- 10:17Speaker 4: No.
- 10:18Speaker 3: If I change certain dialogue, does it change the character? No,
- 10:21Speaker 3: Like you suddenly under you get a better understanding of
- 10:24Speaker 3: character by the fact that different people. It's just like
- 10:29Speaker 3: a Broadway play. Yeah, I didn't see Michael Crawford play
- 10:32Speaker 3: the Phantom of the Opera. I saw Steve Barton play
- 10:34Speaker 3: the Fano of the Opera. Steve Barton was the original role.
- 10:37Speaker 3: He did it differently similar enough because it's a big
- 10:42Speaker 3: Broadway production sort of thing. But he did Phantom in
- 10:45Speaker 3: his own way. It was his voice, it was his mannerisms,
- 10:48Speaker 3: it was his speaking, it was his movement. That gets
- 10:54Speaker 3: that you know, that gets further to that core, you know,
- 10:57Speaker 3: because Christopher Lee wasn't in Dooku Jedi Lost, right, but
- 11:00Speaker 3: it was still Doku well.
- 11:03Speaker 4: And I mean again to point to the clone Wars, right,
- 11:06Speaker 4: they helped us to be able to see how different
- 11:10Speaker 4: voice actors could bring characters together and and vibe them
- 11:14Speaker 4: with a whole new sense of being. You know, James
- 11:17Speaker 4: Arnold Taylor or Obi Wan Kenobi or Matt Lantern as Anakin.
- 11:21Speaker 4: You know, in some ways, you know, you think about
- 11:23Speaker 4: those those two specifically. I mean, they are an expression
- 11:28Speaker 4: of those characters that some kids that's all they've ever known.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Oh you know what, I actually I want to interject
- 11:35Speaker 3: there really really funny really quick is when when my
- 11:41Speaker 3: youngest saw Revenge of the Sith for the first time,
- 11:43Speaker 3: it was in the theater re release that was recent
- 11:46Speaker 3: compared to when we're releasing this to whatever historian finds
- 11:50Speaker 3: this on a disc lost somewhere three hundred years from now.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I'm talking relative time here anyway. So in the beginning,
- 11:58Speaker 3: Hayden Christensen walks out, you know, in that little intro
- 12:01Speaker 3: where it's like, hey, thanks everybody for coming to this
- 12:04Speaker 3: special anniversary President blah blah blah blah blah. To her,
- 12:09Speaker 3: Matt Lanter's voice was Anakin's voice, right, because she had
- 12:12Speaker 3: been watching the Clone Wars up to that point. When
- 12:16Speaker 3: Hayden Christiansen walks out, she leans over to me and
- 12:20Speaker 3: she says, oh, I can tell that's Anakin. And I
- 12:22Speaker 3: didn't say anything to her, but in my head I
- 12:25Speaker 3: was like, Wow, what a tribute to Matt Lanter that
- 12:30Speaker 3: to her, there's no difference between these two people like that.
- 12:33Speaker 3: That I think speaks to what we're talking about. Yeah,
- 12:35Speaker 3: where you can have it in different media but people
- 12:38Speaker 3: will still accept it.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think you know, when you think
- 12:41Speaker 4: too about this, you know, one of the things that
- 12:44Speaker 4: you mentioned kind of at the top of the show,
- 12:47Speaker 4: was the whole idea of, you know, does this kind
- 12:50Speaker 4: of help revitalize you know, Star Wars fiction, which you
- 12:56Speaker 4: know has had a rough time.
- 12:57Speaker 1: You know.
- 12:58Speaker 4: I'm actually reading a review cop right now of the
- 13:01Speaker 4: bad Batch Sanctuary novel that is going to come out
- 13:05Speaker 4: later this year, enjoying it. But I'm thinking to myself
- 13:08Speaker 4: as I'm reading it, how wonderful would it be to
- 13:11Speaker 4: have a full audio production of this book with all
- 13:14Speaker 4: of the actors from the bad Batch series playing these
- 13:20Speaker 4: characters in an audio drama version of this It would
- 13:23Speaker 4: be astounding, you know, because it would be like having
- 13:27Speaker 4: an episode of the show, but in this format, which
- 13:31Speaker 4: I think, you know, if if you're going to do
- 13:36Speaker 4: these things, this is I gosh, this is the way
- 13:39Speaker 4: to go, man, I think, because you could really bring
- 13:43Speaker 4: people back to Star Wars fiction and by then also
- 13:49Speaker 4: doing great dramatizations of some of the very best of
- 13:55Speaker 4: the expanded universe, Like say, can you imagine doing this
- 13:58Speaker 4: with a audio drama version of the Air to the
- 14:04Speaker 4: Empire series?
- 14:07Speaker 1: Yeah? You couldn't.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Just me from buying all of them as fast as
- 14:11Speaker 4: humanly possible.
- 14:13Speaker 1: And and to your point.
- 14:15Speaker 3: It's not just somebody reading the book that's fun. An
- 14:18Speaker 3: audiobook is fun. And again I will sing praises on
- 14:22Speaker 3: Shadows of the Empire. They did just the right amount
- 14:25Speaker 3: of production on it. It was really well done and
- 14:27Speaker 3: it was read really well. But taking Air of the
- 14:31Speaker 3: Empire and making it a proper script with a voice cast,
- 14:37Speaker 3: and paying attention to the way they did the way
- 14:41Speaker 3: that Brian Daily created those original ones, you could have
- 14:45Speaker 3: real magic there, real real magic there. And agree, I
- 14:50Speaker 3: think that I think that the thing that gives me
- 14:52Speaker 3: hope is that it seems that in this Disney era,
- 14:58Speaker 3: what hobbled some efforts was this desire to control and
- 15:06Speaker 3: unify all of the media to tell one single story.
- 15:11Speaker 3: And I think, especially for an old Geezer fan like myself,
- 15:15Speaker 3: we always accepted that that wasn't necessary. These were, you know,
- 15:20Speaker 3: the comics were the additional adventures of Luke and Hahn
- 15:23Speaker 3: and leg.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we didn't care.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Oh that doesn't jibe with what's on it. We didn't care.
- 15:28Speaker 3: We just wanted our monthly fix. We just wanted some content.
- 15:32Speaker 3: And again it gets back to that whole thing of
- 15:34Speaker 3: like just giving that content, and I think it would
- 15:37Speaker 3: be so beautiful, even if you did like a fifteen
- 15:39Speaker 3: minute weekly show where it was story like you and
- 15:43Speaker 3: you broke it up as like, imagine the story possibilities
- 15:46Speaker 3: of a Jedi trying to survive Order sixty six. Or
- 15:48Speaker 3: you want to tell the story of the origin of
- 15:50Speaker 3: the Jedi. We were talked about this on the recent show.
- 15:52Speaker 3: You want to tell a story about the origin of
- 15:53Speaker 3: the Jedi. Here's your formata and now you're not locked in.
- 15:58Speaker 3: It's not a film and your uh, your your whole
- 16:02Speaker 3: return on investment is different. Your expenditure is different, your
- 16:06Speaker 3: distribution is different, your presence is different. I mean, I'm
- 16:10Speaker 3: talking myself into doing something now and just be like,
- 16:13Speaker 3: let Disney come after me. This is this is uh
- 16:16Speaker 3: uh my name is Matt Rushing, and Disney consume me
- 16:20Speaker 3: at Matt Rushing zero two on any social networks. Remember
- 16:23Speaker 3: that name is Matt Rushing. Yes, go after him, Disney Wolds, yes, yes.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Please please don't.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Uh No.
- 16:30Speaker 4: I I see the thing about this is and I
- 16:34Speaker 4: you know, I just couldn't agree with you more. I
- 16:37Speaker 4: think that there's there's just kind of so much to
- 16:40Speaker 4: love here about this idea and what it does is
- 16:45Speaker 4: it really gives us the opportunity to to just be
- 16:50Speaker 4: able to enjoy uh Star Wars in a new way,
- 16:54Speaker 4: you know, and you and Yancy living that experience of
- 16:58Speaker 4: of of getting to hear a great audio version of
- 17:02Speaker 4: Shadows of the Empire and it bringing the book to
- 17:05Speaker 4: life to you in a way that made you think,
- 17:08Speaker 4: oh my gosh, this is like way better than I remember.
- 17:12Speaker 4: I think that's that's kind of the beauty of what
- 17:15Speaker 4: we're talking about, Like you're you're actually allowing people to
- 17:19Speaker 4: be able to then experience things that may make them
- 17:22Speaker 4: fall in love with it in a way that they
- 17:25Speaker 4: weren't in love with it before. Uh And and in
- 17:29Speaker 4: that experience, people then are hungry then to go and
- 17:37Speaker 4: search for more, you know, because you know, I don't
- 17:41Speaker 4: think Yancy will mind me saying this, but one of
- 17:43Speaker 4: the things that happened is that he immediately went and
- 17:47Speaker 4: listened to the audiobook version of Rogue Planet that had
- 17:51Speaker 4: also just come out. Because of his experience that he
- 17:54Speaker 4: had with the Shadows of the Empire, he immediately thought, well, man,
- 18:01Speaker 4: I want more of this. So he went and picked
- 18:04Speaker 4: up Rogue Planet and he listened to it. And so
- 18:07Speaker 4: when you do that you're just you know, you're encouraging
- 18:15Speaker 4: people then to go explore more of the content because
- 18:19Speaker 4: they liked something so much, they're like, oh, I want
- 18:23Speaker 4: more of this, and you know if you provide it,
- 18:27Speaker 4: if you build it, they will come.
- 18:29Speaker 1: You know.
- 18:29Speaker 4: That's that's what they say. And so I would love
- 18:32Speaker 4: to see them build more of these things so that
- 18:36Speaker 4: when people enjoy something like Shadows of the Empire, they
- 18:43Speaker 4: can immediately be pointed to, if you liked that, you
- 18:47Speaker 4: should try this. And that's just all about creating that
- 18:51Speaker 4: content to make sure that it's there.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Can you imagine if they had done something like this
- 18:57Speaker 3: and then you tease it on Disney Plus and stuff
- 18:59Speaker 3: like that for galaxies Edge to sell the place as
- 19:05Speaker 3: a place you wanted to go. If you had an
- 19:07Speaker 3: audio series Tales from galaxies Edge, Tails from the Galaxy's Edge,
- 19:13Speaker 3: and it's it's not just centered around the Kylo Renen
- 19:17Speaker 3: character or anything like that. They can you know, come
- 19:19Speaker 3: and go as you need them to. But you could
- 19:22Speaker 3: actually tell those stories because look, I hate to break
- 19:26Speaker 3: it to everybody, as just as a closing point, kids
- 19:29Speaker 3: ain't reading no more. They're they're not They're they're scrolling
- 19:33Speaker 3: on on their devices.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I'm not saying that like old man shaking his physic clouds.
- 19:38Speaker 1: You know, I'm not yelling at the cloud right, I'm saying,
- 19:40Speaker 1: like it's rare for books to move. Now. This is it.
- 19:47Speaker 3: This is how you're going to revitalize what was your
- 19:50Speaker 3: expanded universe in the past and move it beyond the
- 19:54Speaker 3: Gen xers and older millennials who are still okay with reading.
