- 0:08In our busy world, family time is frequently neglected.
- 0:13It is vital that we give attention to our families while we
- 0:16can, and it is especially important to give attention to
- 0:20what God says in his word about our homes.
- 0:24For the next few moments, Let's join Scott Pauley as we open
- 0:27the scriptures and find God's message for your family.
- 0:39And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be filled
- 0:44with the Spirit. It's a great verse, isn't it? We love to quote
- 0:48it, but did you ever notice that Ephesians 5 and verse 18 is
- 0:52actually found in the context of the Christian home. That if
- 0:57you look at Ephesians 5, Ephesians 5 is about family.
- 1:01It is in fact one of the classic passages on the Christian
- 1:05home, and right in the middle of it is this command to be filled
- 1:09with the Holy Spirit. I'd like to talk with you today about
- 1:13having a Spirit-filled home. Is your home filled
- 1:18with the Holy Spirit? You know, the book of Ephesians is a book of fullness
- 1:21in every way. That's really the theme of the book. In fact, if you study
- 1:25Ephesians, you're going to find the fullness of God, the fullness
- 1:29of Christ, and the fullness of the Holy Spirit. That's a lot of fullness.
- 1:32It's all the fullness of God in us.
- 1:36And so the application here to the family is that we are to
- 1:40have God's fullness in our homes. So many
- 1:44empty believers, so many empty churches, and so many empty
- 1:48families. Most homes today are so filled with the flesh and
- 1:52the world that there's no room for the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 1:55And many homes that have been emptied of worldliness are
- 1:59just sterile environments where everybody's trying to be good without God,
- 2:03and they're trying to follow a list of rules, but they've not learned the glorious
- 2:07joy and blessing and abundance of living and walking
- 2:11in the Spirit. Look, the fruit of the Spirit is just that—
- 2:15it is what only the Holy Spirit can produce. So if you want
- 2:18love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness,
- 2:21temperance, then friend, you need the Holy Spirit.
- 2:26To be Spirit-filled, that's not about what you take out of your life.
- 2:30It's about what you put into your life and what he puts into your life.
- 2:34In fact, in the verse, be not drunk with wine wherein is
- 2:38excess, but be filled with the Spirit, do you see the great contrast here?
- 2:42Do you see how there's no room for the one because
- 2:45the Holy Spirit is has his rightful place. You could take all
- 2:49the wrong things out of your life and out of your family, but if
- 2:53the Holy Spirit doesn't have liberty to move and work, you're going to
- 2:57miss every good thing that God has for you. And here's the key:
- 3:01Spirit-filled homes require Spirit-filled hearts.
- 3:06The real question is not, is your home filled with
- 3:10the Holy Spirit? The real question is Are you filled with the Holy Spirit?
- 3:14Am I filled with the Holy Spirit? In fact, the first
- 3:18family in the New Testament, the family of John the Baptist—
- 3:22I've always found it interesting that it says of his father Zacharias,
- 3:26he was filled with the Holy Spirit. It says of his mother Elizabeth,
- 3:29she was filled with the Holy Spirit. And then it says of John that he
- 3:33was filled with the Holy Spirit. Every individual in the home was filled
- 3:37with the Holy Spirit. You want to have a great family? Then let every
- 3:41member of that family not only be saved— that's good, that's a start—
- 3:45but let every member of that family learn what it means to be filled with
- 3:49the Holy Spirit. So often I meet people and they say, well, we're all saved
- 3:53but we're miserable, but we're all believers but something's
- 3:56missing. Friend, the key ingredient of the Christian
- 4:00home is the person of the Holy Spirit.
- 4:04So what does a Spirit-filled home look like?
- 4:07I mean, a family truly yielded to God. Well, in the context
- 4:11we find so many things. Let's just walk through it. For example,
- 4:15in verse number 16 it says, redeeming the time because the days
- 4:19are evil. Wherefore be not unwise, but understanding
- 4:23what the will of the Lord is. One thing that I think marks Spirit-filled
- 4:27families is wisdom. Anywhere the Holy Spirit is at work,
- 4:30wisdom comes, because the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of
- 4:34wisdom. So do you need wisdom today? Do you need wisdom
- 4:38to make the most of your time, to make right decisions? Do you need wisdom
- 4:42for some choice that's facing you, or direction for your home?
- 4:45I'll tell you what you need. You don't need an answer.
- 4:48You need the person of the Holy Spirit. And when you're yielded
- 4:52to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, when you obey the Holy Spirit each day,
- 4:56When you recognize the leading of the Holy Spirit, he will give you
- 5:00the wisdom that you greatly need. And not only does the Holy Spirit,
- 5:04when he fills, bring wisdom, but he also brings gratitude.
- 5:09Listen to verse number 19: Speaking to yourselves
- 5:12in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
- 5:16singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always
- 5:20for all things unto God and the Father in the name
- 5:23of our Lord Jesus Christ. I'm convinced that one of
- 5:27the real missing elements today in most of our homes is gratitude,
- 5:31just being thankful. Ingratitude is
- 5:35the root of every sin. Every evil thing
- 5:38grows in the soil of unthankfulness. And I think Eden
- 5:42is a perfect example of that. Adam and Eve had everything, but because
- 5:46they weren't grateful for what they did have, they could only look at the one
- 5:50thing they did not have. Stop questioning the goodness of
- 5:54God. If ingratitude is the root of every sin,
- 5:57and dear friend, gratitude is the root of every good thing.
- 6:01Count your many blessings. Name them one by one. Count your
- 6:05many blessings. See what God hath done. If you will,
- 6:09by God's grace, begin each day to practice
- 6:13the discipline of gratitude in your home, to give thanks always,
- 6:17for all things, unto God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 6:21you will soon discover that the Holy Spirit has
- 6:25the liberty to move and work in an amazing way in your
- 6:28home. Dr. Bob Jones Sr. used to say, when gratitude dies
- 6:32on the altar of a man's heart, he's well nigh gone. Let me adjust
- 6:37that just a little bit today. When gratitude dies on the altar of
- 6:41your home, it is well nigh gone. Keep a thankful spirit in your
- 6:44family. And then Spirit-filled
- 6:48homes are not only marked by wisdom and gratitude, they're marked by joy.
- 6:52Did you hear all the joy here of the singing,
- 6:55the melody in your heart? Oh, only the Holy Spirit can bring that
- 6:59kind of joy. You see, holiness and happiness—
- 7:03I mean by that true holiness and God's happiness— always
- 7:07go together. They're not mutually exclusive. You don't have to be miserable You
- 7:11can enjoy the journey when the Holy Spirit of God has his way. And then
- 7:16Spirit-filled homes are also marked by submission.
- 7:19The very next verse says, submitting yourselves one to
- 7:23another in the fear of God. Yes, it goes on to talk about wives submitting
- 7:27to their own husbands, but notice it begins with mutual submission.
- 7:31It begins with all of us submitting ourselves first of all
- 7:34to God, to his authority, the fear of the Lord. And then submitting
- 7:38ourselves to one another in every relationship, to the needs of
- 7:42the other, in honor preferring one another. I'm going to tell
- 7:46you, when Jesus is Lord of the home, when he gets his
- 7:50way, home is no longer a war zone. Instead,
- 7:54it's a wonderful haven of peace. You know what we need?
- 7:58We need the Holy Spirit to control and fill our hearts and
- 8:02our homes. A little footnote to this study today. If you take Colossians
- 8:063— you know, Ephesians and Colossians are twin epistles and they repeat
- 8:11the same themes— if you take Colossians 3 and study it alongside of this
- 8:15passage in Ephesians 5, you're going to find that the same
- 8:18things— wisdom, gratitude,
- 8:21joy, submission— are all seen in Colossians 3
- 8:25as a result of being filled with the scriptures. Here's what I believe.
- 8:30I believe to be filled with the Spirit is to be filled with the scriptures.
- 8:33The word of God is the sword of the Spirit.
- 8:36When you obey God's word, you get in step with the Holy
- 8:40Spirit, and he produces every good thing in us.
- 8:45Is your heart filled with wisdom and gratitude and
- 8:49joy and submission today? Only when it is can your home be filled
- 8:54with wisdom gratitude and joy and submission.
- 8:58May the Lord help all of us to be Spirit-filled people
- 9:02today, and by God's grace, to have Spirit-filled homes.
