- 0:00Speaker 1: Florida, baby.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I'll be in Jacksonville this week. We've got shows Friday
- 0:04Speaker 2: and Saturday. That's March 13th and 14th. One on Friday
- 0:09Speaker 2: and two on Saturday evening. A few tickets are still
- 0:12Speaker 2: available at theovon.com slash T-O-U-R. Practicing, preparing for my Netflix special.
- 0:20Speaker 2: So grateful to be down there in the great state
- 0:22Speaker 2: of Florida. Today's guest is a musician, He's a founder
- 0:27Speaker 2: of the legendary rock band The Black Crows. He has
- 0:31Speaker 2: a new album called A Pound of Feathers that comes
- 0:34Speaker 2: out March 13th. I cannot even believe today's guest is Mr.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Chris Robinson.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Shine on me and I will find you. And I like,
- 0:59Speaker 1: I don't mind being decrepit a little bit. You know
- 1:01Speaker 1: what I mean? Like I've never.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It's kind of artsy. It's a little bit Tim Burton-esque.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Well, I'm kind of proud that I've survived 59 winters. Yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Oh, I can imagine with your life, I bet. Did
- 1:18Speaker 2: you feel like when you were young, like I'm never
- 1:19Speaker 2: going to live long? And then as you've grown, you're like, fuck,
- 1:24Speaker 2: I guess I'm.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I don't, you know what? It's so funny because I'm
- 1:29Speaker 1: not afraid of the theme at all. And of course,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I never really, I mean, no, I didn't really, I've
- 1:37Speaker 1: never really thought about it. I adhere to, do you
- 1:41Speaker 1: know the French artist Jean Cocteau? Do you know who
- 1:43Speaker 1: he was? He's very, have you ever seen the original
- 1:46Speaker 1: movie Beauty and the Beast? Yeah. The black and white
- 1:49Speaker 1: one with the hands. He directed that film. He was
- 1:52Speaker 1: a French artist, intellectual.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Jean Cocteau.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, a very important figure in the 20th century in art.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And I subscribed to something that he said. And he said,
- 2:06Speaker 1: living is a horizontal fall. So I'm just like, dude,
- 2:10Speaker 1: should I? When I read that about 35, 36 years ago,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I was like, that's it. I mean, what else do
- 2:16Speaker 1: you need to know? I mean, it was like perfect, philosophic.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Ah, ah, ah.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 2: That's a line. Sometimes I get so jealous when you
- 2:24Speaker 2: hear somebody that said something or that wrote something, you know,
- 2:26Speaker 2: not jealous, but also I guess I used to get
- 2:28Speaker 2: more jealous. Now I think I just get grateful that
- 2:30Speaker 2: I got to hear it or read it.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Of course.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Of course.
- 2:32Speaker 1: That's what it's all about. I mean, there's, there's a
- 2:36Speaker 1: million things to inspire, you know? And I think, I
- 2:41Speaker 1: think it's really sad if you get to a point
- 2:44Speaker 1: and it could be anything, just whatever. I have a
- 2:47Speaker 1: lot of varied interests, you know what I mean? So,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm constantly like interested in stuff and the world is
- 2:54Speaker 1: just information. You know what I mean? Um, because I'm
- 2:59Speaker 1: dyslexic as well. I just process it in a different way,
- 3:02Speaker 1: but it's, it's, that's why I've been in a fucking
- 3:05Speaker 1: rock band my whole life. That's what.
- 3:08Speaker 2: It'll lead you there. You saying, yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 2: If your brain is fricking doing donuts or whatever.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Every, every artist I know. Yeah. It's like, that's why
- 3:17Speaker 1: we found our way to this. And, the success part
- 3:22Speaker 1: or whatever, that kind of aspect of it is just whatever.
- 3:25Speaker 1: You know what I mean? That's what either happens or
- 3:27Speaker 1: doesn't happen. Yeah.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I read somewhere that you, um, like you have like a,
- 3:31Speaker 2: I don't know if it's a fascination, but like about
- 3:33Speaker 2: the first line of a song or a, um, like
- 3:37Speaker 2: even whenever you mentioned that thing about Mr. Cocteau, it
- 3:40Speaker 2: made me think about that. Like how the first line
- 3:42Speaker 2: is so important.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah. It's well for, it's funny that you're, I did
- 3:46Speaker 1: say that. I've said that because you know, lyrics are the,
- 3:51Speaker 1: the writing songs was the first thing I thought I
- 3:53Speaker 1: could do. Do you know what I mean? So I
- 3:56Speaker 1: was like, I was, that's what I was into. Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 1: That was my interest, poetry and writing. You know, that
- 4:01Speaker 1: was something that I felt I had, maybe I could
- 4:05Speaker 1: get into this.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Was it a music first? Like you were just thinking
- 4:07Speaker 2: poetry and they're just.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Poetry first. You know what I mean? Because the music
- 4:11Speaker 1: part came a little later when I was kind of,
- 4:17Speaker 1: like fuck you know like we're going to see like
- 4:20Speaker 1: hardcore bands in Atlanta in the early 80s at like
- 4:23Speaker 1: punk rock matinee shows and stuff because that's the shit
- 4:27Speaker 1: we could go see because I wasn't really interested in
- 4:30Speaker 1: like MTV and kind of the same stuff we were
- 4:33Speaker 1: just different my brother too that kind of led to
- 4:39Speaker 1: the whole world of oh there's like all this other
- 4:41Speaker 1: shit going on but it's not on TV or it's
- 4:44Speaker 1: not the on the radio, you have to really dig
- 4:47Speaker 1: and find it. And then you see some other kid
- 4:50Speaker 1: in like a fucking circle jerks t-shirt or something. And
- 4:52Speaker 1: you're like, let's go talk to that guy.
- 4:54Speaker 2: What's going on there.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Which the world is still the same way. I
- 4:59Speaker 1: think you meet the people you're supposed to meet. It
- 5:01Speaker 1: has nothing to do with technology. If you're out in
- 5:06Speaker 1: the world traveling around. Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Actually.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I think you come across.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Fucking people because you guys are, people are on a,
- 5:13Speaker 1: A certain wavelength.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a real human wavelength that's still happening in
- 5:17Speaker 2: the universe, even though so many of us are sidelined
- 5:20Speaker 2: on our devices, though. It's almost like you're on the
- 5:22Speaker 2: sidelines when you're on your device.
- 5:23Speaker 1: It's almost as if it's by design, too. You know
- 5:26Speaker 1: what I mean? I mean, I don't really wander into
- 5:28Speaker 1: those realms so much. I'm too busy with Mr. Cocktoe.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Just kidding. Once I read that you said that, I
- 5:36Speaker 1: was like, Oh, yeah, I was trying to think of... Oh,
- 5:43Speaker 1: the first line thing. Well, that dictates the... Yeah, where, like, okay,
- 5:49Speaker 1: if that first thing to me is something like I could,
- 5:52Speaker 1: in a stupid visualization, open up a page and see it,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and then if that would be something that... If I
- 6:00Speaker 1: could capture something in imagination or feeling or where those
- 6:03Speaker 1: two things come together in the first few words of
- 6:07Speaker 1: the song... Yeah. That's, you know, and I find my,
- 6:10Speaker 1: I like that with songs too. Yeah. You know what
- 6:13Speaker 1: I mean? I'm not going to wait until the third
- 6:14Speaker 1: verse for some good words.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yeah, to tickle you a little. Yeah. Go get it
- 6:18Speaker 2: to it. Yeah, you want to tickle him up front. Like,
- 6:20Speaker 2: what's a Johnny, that Johnny, I hurt myself today.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. That one. The Trent Reznor song.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yes. Oh, my friend was just at, they just went
- 6:29Speaker 2: to see Nine Inch Nails last night, actually. He was
- 6:31Speaker 2: sending me videos.
- 6:32Speaker 1: They were here last night?
- 6:33Speaker 2: No, they were in New Orleans.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Oh, New Orleans. Oh, that's right, that's right. He just went. Wow,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I saw that. My wife and I went to see
- 6:40Speaker 1: them in Brooklyn over the summer. It was like a
- 6:42Speaker 1: crazy week of like fucking gigs because we got there
- 6:47Speaker 1: and Korn and System of a Down were playing. So
- 6:50Speaker 1: we went to that and I've never seen shit like
- 6:52Speaker 1: that and that was fucking amazing.
- 6:54Speaker 2: With Brian Walsh, was he playing?
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. But that was the gig where a guy
- 6:57Speaker 1: was like jerking off in the stands. Oh, in Brooklyn?
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Now, this is at the stadium. What's it called? MetLife Stadium. Oh, yeah.
- 7:07Speaker 1: It was all over the internet.
- 7:08Speaker 2: There's a guy jerking off.
- 7:10Speaker 1: There he is. That's a trap beat. Bro, that's playing
- 7:14Speaker 1: an 808, huh? He's really upset at that point. But
- 7:19Speaker 1: a guy runs over and smacks him. I was at
- 7:21Speaker 1: that gig, but I was on the floor, so I
- 7:24Speaker 1: had nothing to do. Oh, you were down there in
- 7:26Speaker 1: the recipient section. Maybe he was looking at me right there.
- 7:28Speaker 1: You never know.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Oh, that dude's just serving a little bit of body butter.
- 7:32Speaker 2: That dude's just making his own vending machine, dude.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I mean, look, this guy's had enough of you, man. Bro,
- 7:39Speaker 1: to run up and hit a guy who's jerking off
- 7:40Speaker 1: is insane, though. Unless maybe he's a... That's what he wanted.
- 7:44Speaker 1: He couldn't really get it together unless he got punched
- 7:46Speaker 1: in the back of the skull.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Good point. Maybe that was his.
- 7:50Speaker 1: His plan all along. Wow, this guy's really on to something. Wow.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I'm so glad I can get off easier than that.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I was at that show. I was at Nine Inch Nails,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and then we went to Oasis.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Oh, amazing, huh?
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a great week. But I tell you,
- 8:05Speaker 1: Nine Inch Nails was... unbelievably good show. I mean, it
- 8:09Speaker 1: was so theatrical, so visual. It was, it was, there
- 8:14Speaker 1: was also like a real human part too. I mean,
- 8:17Speaker 1: I was just so impressed.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I heard the effects on this tour is supposed
- 8:19Speaker 2: to be pretty amazing. Did it just kick off? No,
- 8:21Speaker 2: this is the second half of it, right?
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:24Speaker 2: They did half of it last year.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I haven't got to talk to my friend. He's seen
- 8:27Speaker 2: like four videos last night though. So it was pretty
- 8:29Speaker 2: cool just to have like moments from our childhood, you know,
- 8:31Speaker 2: that you just like, and for like 30 seconds each
- 8:34Speaker 2: time I was, like, back in these moments where you're, like,
- 8:36Speaker 2: feeling something, you know?
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah, well, that's... I see some concerts now are less
- 8:43Speaker 1: phone-driven than they used to be.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Like, people want to be there more.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I think so.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I think you're right.
- 8:49Speaker 1: And I think it's funny when you see, like, when
- 8:52Speaker 1: it's juxtaposed with, like, if you see some footage from, like,
- 8:55Speaker 1: concerts before phones and everyone is focused on the same
- 9:02Speaker 1: fucking thing. And it was really, you know, about some
- 9:06Speaker 1: other sort of interaction. Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And you'd have a, you'd almost have a, like a,
- 9:10Speaker 2: it was like you were riding a wave during a concert.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Like you'd find somebody that had a beer.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Emotional. Yes. You're there and then you.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Connect with a girl, but she disappears. And then you're like,
- 9:19Speaker 2: oh wait, I'm here with my wife. And then that's there.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Concerts were every, I mean, they were, it was a
- 9:23Speaker 1: different thing before. I mean, they can still have magical moments.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You know, people can still be involved. Yeah.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yeah. But your friend would go off to get like,
- 9:31Speaker 2: and then somebody would go off to get beverages and
- 9:33Speaker 2: you would never see, like that person, they were gone.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Never saw them since.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Oh, dude, there was just something about experiences like that.
- 9:42Speaker 2: There was something about like, I always feel like the
- 9:46Speaker 2: best music was during my childhood, but I don't know
- 9:48Speaker 2: if that stunts my appreciation for music as an adult.
- 9:52Speaker 2: You know what it is?
- 9:53Speaker 1: I don't think it's about it being the best music.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I think my wife and I were talking about this
- 9:58Speaker 1: because she, she's like an anthropologist. When she sees some
- 10:03Speaker 1: teenagers sitting on the sidewalk smoking cigarettes, she's like, we
- 10:07Speaker 1: need to study them. Look at them. This has been
- 10:09Speaker 1: going on forever. But I say, I'll do the drawings.
- 10:15Speaker 1: But I think what it is, and we talk about it,
- 10:17Speaker 1: is when you're a teenager or you're an adolescent, you're
- 10:21Speaker 1: so alive in a different way for the first time
- 10:25Speaker 1: from the childhood alive to like this, oh, now the
- 10:30Speaker 1: way the world feels to me is going to be
- 10:33Speaker 1: something different. And when that music comes, it's like fucking
- 10:36Speaker 1: imprinted on like this fresh you know what i mean
- 10:41Speaker 1: there's no no one is swollen at that age.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Before that you're kind of pulp and this is like
- 10:47Speaker 2: that's like the first time but i get it.
- 10:49Speaker 1: But it makes sense you know what i mean because
- 10:51Speaker 1: i'm not i feel that i mean i'm lucky that
- 10:54Speaker 1: i'm not nostalgic i don't really care about nostalgia oh
- 10:58Speaker 1: you don't get into that it doesn't make me things
- 11:01Speaker 1: are the way they are when they're happening and Yes,
- 11:04Speaker 1: there could be an aspect of something like, oh, I
- 11:06Speaker 1: remember when I first heard that record, but I don't
- 11:10Speaker 1: listen to a record like, I don't know, it could
- 11:12Speaker 1: be anything. Even if it was from the 80s, I
- 11:17Speaker 1: don't know, something like Let's Active. There's a band from
- 11:19Speaker 1: North Carolina, Mitch Easter.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Let's Active?
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, loved Let's Active.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Bring them up. I want to see them.
- 11:25Speaker 1: But if I hear that, I'm not back in my
- 11:27Speaker 1: mom and dad's house. I'm like, oh, listen how cool
- 11:29Speaker 1: that guitar sounds. Music has always made it alive. The room,
- 11:35Speaker 1: wherever I am.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Does it– yeah, it's funny because a lot of music
- 11:39Speaker 2: I think I immediately go back to place. I'm like
- 11:41Speaker 2: a nostalgia junkie. I'm like a romanticist, like let's go
- 11:45Speaker 2: back in time kind of guy. And I think I
- 11:47Speaker 2: miss out on probably a lot of like life and
- 11:50Speaker 2: present moments sometimes like that. But I don't know if
- 11:53Speaker 2: I'm that upset about it. Maybe that's just who I
- 11:55Speaker 2: am on this trip.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I mean I don't think that's necessarily– yeah. Yeah. I mean,
- 12:01Speaker 1: that's also just dreaming. Yeah, maybe it is. You know
- 12:04Speaker 1: what I mean?
- 12:04Speaker 2: And I love, I just love, like, I think I
- 12:06Speaker 2: just loved some of those years so much.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I mean, are you kidding? If I could, like, if
- 12:11Speaker 1: I could dress like a, you know, 17th century French aristocrat,
- 12:15Speaker 1: I would. You know, I'd walk around with the wig
- 12:18Speaker 1: and the, like, pants, and I would, like, you know.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, if they had chain mail.
- 12:22Speaker 1: And I would feel great about it. I mean, I
- 12:23Speaker 1: would feel great about it. That's a little, yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 2: But if they had chain mail, like, if you showed
- 12:27Speaker 2: up to, like, say there was going to be people, like,
- 12:28Speaker 2: there might be beef at this thing.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think there was kind of always
- 12:32Speaker 1: beef with those things.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point, dude. Yeah, so somebody that
- 12:34Speaker 2: showed up in chain mail was just like a dude
- 12:37Speaker 2: who showed up with like.
- 12:38Speaker 1: The richest, most powerful people are the most unhinged, obviously.
- 12:41Speaker 1: They're like, run him through! Run him through! I think
- 12:46Speaker 1: we're there now, dude. I don't think it's ever been
- 12:48Speaker 1: any different. Yeah. I mean, I also think the resistance
- 12:53Speaker 1: is always there.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope it is.
- 12:56Speaker 1: You know what I mean? I also think the moral
- 12:57Speaker 1: compass will always show the way to what is right
- 13:03Speaker 1: and what is wrong. And that doesn't have anything to do.
- 13:06Speaker 1: That's just a fundamental. We know what's right and wrong. Yeah.
- 13:10Speaker 1: You know what I mean? And you believe that. Yeah,
- 13:13Speaker 1: I do because I've seen it happen. I mean, by
- 13:15Speaker 1: the way, sometimes it doesn't come without a full on struggle. Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Cause I've been worrying about that a lot recently.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I'm like, you have to like, like we got to
- 13:28Speaker 1: believe that.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Morality wins, you know, somehow.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Yeah. No, but again, these things are in a constant
- 13:38Speaker 1: sort of struggle that keep going and going. I mean, forever.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I mean, I know we like to think that.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I know. It's all now. Yeah. It's all our life.
- 13:47Speaker 1: That life was, you know, there was Victorian people and
- 13:51Speaker 1: then Crocs and airports. You know what I mean? But
- 13:54Speaker 1: there's some other shit that happened in between. Yeah. your
- 13:58Speaker 1: comfort and uh you know robber barons or whatever um
- 14:03Speaker 1: but there is a there is a constant line in
- 14:05Speaker 1: it you know what i mean and so i don't
- 14:08Speaker 1: know what did they say what's that clint eastwood movie
- 14:11Speaker 1: where the grit no it's one of but it's like
- 14:15Speaker 1: a mid-70s one but the guy who's like his plays
- 14:21Speaker 1: like the Native American guy, when they're talking about the troubles,
- 14:25Speaker 1: he goes, we must endeavor to persevere. And ever since
- 14:30Speaker 1: I was a kid, I was like, yeah. Oh, it's
- 14:33Speaker 1: the Outlaw Jesse Wales. That's the one.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Oh, I've heard of that. I've never seen it.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Oh, it's great. Is it? It's great, yeah.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I'm going to have to check that out, man. The
- 14:40Speaker 2: Outlaw Jesse Wales. Josie Wales.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Josie Wales.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and they just remade it, I think, actually.
- 14:44Speaker 1: No, don't do it. I know.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Rarely have they done it well.
- 14:49Speaker 1: It's weird. Why? Leave it alone. Just come up with
- 14:52Speaker 1: something else.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I think it's just to get people that saw it
- 14:54Speaker 2: once with nostalgia to go get them to, hey, come
- 14:56Speaker 2: pay for it one more time. And just, you know
- 14:59Speaker 2: it's not going to be that good, but there's a
- 15:00Speaker 2: part of you that's going to connect.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I don't really love musicals, but I love West Side Story.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I like the newsies.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I always did, you know? Yeah. And as a lyricist,
- 15:10Speaker 1: one of the greatest lyrics of all time is in
- 15:12Speaker 1: the Officer Crumpke song, when the kid goes, I'm depraved
- 15:15Speaker 1: on account of I'm deprived. And I was always like,
- 15:18Speaker 1: that's like fucking Bob Dylan. I'm depraved on account and
- 15:21Speaker 1: I'm deprived. I mean, it is one of the great
- 15:24Speaker 1: lyrics of all time, but then Steven Spielberg remakes. What's
- 15:29Speaker 1: that story? I don't get it. I want, I mean,
- 15:33Speaker 1: he didn't call me. He didn't ask my opinion, but
- 15:36Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure, you know, that's Steve. He's going
- 15:39Speaker 1: to do what he wants to do. Yeah, man.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Yeah. I wonder if I had made something wonderful. would
- 15:46Speaker 2: I try and remake it later on? Like, I wonder
- 15:49Speaker 2: what my desire would be in that.
- 15:52Speaker 1: I mean, that, I don't, yeah, I wouldn't, I don't
- 15:55Speaker 1: understand that.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Is there times like that in your career where you've
- 15:59Speaker 2: written like music that you really thought was great or
- 16:02Speaker 2: that had commercial successes or something? And then later, have
- 16:06Speaker 2: you ever like been like, I need to try and
- 16:08Speaker 2: get myself back into that space to write music like
- 16:12Speaker 2: that again, instead of trying to be like, I'm writing
- 16:16Speaker 2: music from where I'm at.
- 16:18Speaker 1: No.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Does that make sense?
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I hear you. But I'm not, I've always found
- 16:22Speaker 1: it to be, I don't know. I've always found it
- 16:26Speaker 1: to be the most sort of fulfilling just to be
- 16:31Speaker 1: in the moment, you know, which is difficult too because,
- 16:35Speaker 1: you know, it's hard. You know, it's hard to, I've,
- 16:39Speaker 1: it's hard to remain in the dream place sometimes. Yeah.
- 16:42Speaker 1: It's not hard for me. It's hard for everyone else
- 16:44Speaker 1: because you have to deal. I'm a husband. I have kids. Pets.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I have pets. So demanding. So much pressure from the pets. Okay.
- 16:59Speaker 1: But the reality is I can't fully remove myself from
- 17:03Speaker 1: the dream place or the muse or whatever you want
- 17:06Speaker 1: to call it because I do understand that it's a
- 17:10Speaker 1: very jealous entity and it will leave you. If you're not,
- 17:15Speaker 1: it has to have its proper place.
- 17:19Speaker 2: What does you're saying?
- 17:21Speaker 1: The Muse, you know what I mean? That creative spark.
- 17:23Speaker 1: It's like Quest for Fire. Do you know that movie?
- 17:25Speaker 1: Ever seen Quest for Fire? Dude, we have to have
- 17:27Speaker 1: a movie night. I mean, you're missing a lot of
- 17:30Speaker 1: Quest for Fire. I've seen, whoa. The best.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I look like I'm related to one of those people.
- 17:36Speaker 1: We all are. We all are.
- 17:38Speaker 2: There we go. I've seen... I think the first movie
- 17:40Speaker 2: I ever saw was either like Jason Voorhees, like the
- 17:43Speaker 2: killer guy at the lake. And then there was the movie.
- 17:51Speaker 2: It was the guy, the older guy, he has the
- 17:53Speaker 2: Coke bottle and he throws it in Africa or whatever.
- 17:56Speaker 1: The gods must be crazy. Yes. Okay, that's a pretty.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And Cheech and Chong, that was an early one too.
- 18:02Speaker 2: That was like still kind of popping. Oh, look at
- 18:04Speaker 2: this guy.
- 18:05Speaker 1: My first movie, I remember watching my parents let me
- 18:08Speaker 1: stay up and watch Lord of the Flies. Fuck yeah.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Nothing could be wrong with that.
- 18:14Speaker 2: That kind of fits, you know.
- 18:15Speaker 1: It's like, cool. He'll like this. And I did.
- 18:21Speaker 2: I fucking did. That's crazy, bro. Yeah, that's great, dude.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Just like early influences and stuff. I love that kind
- 18:29Speaker 2: of stuff.
- 18:29Speaker 1: But the first movie I remember, I always saw Patton
- 18:33Speaker 1: with George C. Scott in the drive-in movie theater in
- 18:36Speaker 1: my parents' car.
- 18:37Speaker 2: No, with them?
- 18:38Speaker 1: Do you know that film? You know, because it has
- 18:39Speaker 1: that music.
- 18:41Speaker 2: I've seen this. I've never seen the film.
- 18:42Speaker 1: It's good, too. Oh, my God. It's epic, like psycho
- 18:46Speaker 1: General Patton.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Dude, yeah, I saw, oh, crazy.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Psycho George C. Scott doing it. I mean, he's really.
- 18:53Speaker 2: I got to tap in then. Yeah, I'm just kind
- 18:54Speaker 2: of out of touch with some films. I did just,
- 18:57Speaker 2: I started reading All's Quiet on the Western Front last night.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Amazing. And the original, both of the films, the original
- 19:04Speaker 1: one is unbelievably good. If you've ever, you should watch it.
- 19:08Speaker 1: That's the one that they remade that was like on
- 19:12Speaker 1: Netflix or something that was great. But that's the original one.
- 19:16Speaker 1: The remake is good? The remake was fantastic. Oh, that's
- 19:18Speaker 1: what I'm doing tonight. Watch the original one first, though. Okay.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Don't sell yourself short. Okay. Go to the source. Yeah.
- 19:27Speaker 1: It's incredible. It's incredible.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Here's a situation where they made another one and it
- 19:31Speaker 2: was good. But I guess it's not like a part two, though.
- 19:33Speaker 1: No. And you're right. That is it. That is it.
- 19:38Speaker 1: They did a good job. I loved it. I loved
- 19:40Speaker 1: the modern one. But the original one is... to me
- 19:43Speaker 1: holds like the, the real magic of the thing. Okay.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I did see the jury. What's that movie?
- 19:50Speaker 1: The Jury?
- 19:50Speaker 2: It's like 12 men. It's like- 12 Angry Men?
- 19:53Speaker 1: Yes, dude. It's a big one.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Louis C.K. told me to watch that, and he was right, dude.
- 19:57Speaker 2: It's great.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Fantastic.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I appreciate it. I appreciate the recommendations. I don't get
- 20:01Speaker 2: a ton.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I'm lucky because I'm old enough that when I grew
- 20:06Speaker 1: up in Atlanta- We had three channels and then we
- 20:09Speaker 1: had channel 36 or whatever and TBS and they played
- 20:13Speaker 1: fucking movies. Yeah. Because later it splinters off to Turner
- 20:16Speaker 1: Classic Movies or whatever. But when... There wasn't that much,
- 20:23Speaker 1: there's not that much content, you know?
- 20:25Speaker 2: Oh, there wasn't much at all. Beastmaster, remember when that
- 20:27Speaker 2: came on? On TBS, dude? Every other Tuesday.
- 20:31Speaker 1: For like 10 years. That's right, the ferrets.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Remember this, dude? That was crazy. Some white guy from
- 20:38Speaker 2: WWF tickling a couple of pets. Dude, I was like,
- 20:41Speaker 2: what is going on here?
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah, really, all those fantasy movies are really strange.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Dude, I loved times like that. We would ride our
- 20:48Speaker 2: bikes to go get the videos at the video store.
- 20:50Speaker 2: And they had like those Wild West doors on like
- 20:53Speaker 2: the titty area. You know those?
- 20:56Speaker 1: I'm a product of like the early 80s, you know,
- 21:01Speaker 1: VHS boom. And my parents had moved. They had made
- 21:05Speaker 1: the regretful decision to move to the suburbs. That's the
- 21:12Speaker 1: worst blow in life. You know what I mean?
- 21:14Speaker 2: In Atlanta, if you move from the city to the suburbs?
- 21:16Speaker 1: Well, we had moved to Charlotte, and then when we
- 21:18Speaker 1: moved back, yeah, we were in town, and then we
- 21:19Speaker 1: moved to the sub. But my parents also, this is
- 21:22Speaker 1: at the ripe time of them really being too disinterested
- 21:27Speaker 1: in my life to, like, edit what I was doing.
- 21:31Speaker 1: So it was the great time at these stores of, like,
- 21:33Speaker 1: the midnight movies and European movies. You know what I mean?
- 21:37Speaker 1: And I had the fucking pick of whatever weird... Shit,
- 21:42Speaker 1: we wanted to watch, like, I remember my dad seeing
- 21:45Speaker 1: us watching Eraserhead back then, and he was just like,
- 21:49Speaker 1: why are you doing this to yourself? What is wrong
- 21:53Speaker 1: with you? And I'm like, Dad, it's cinema. We would
- 21:57Speaker 1: watch David Lynch's The Elephant Man, like.
- 22:00Speaker 2: All the time.
- 22:01Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, it's not a lark.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, dude. This isn't a one-time offer.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Like this, we would play it again, you know what
- 22:11Speaker 1: I mean? Like, what the fuck?
- 22:13Speaker 2: Were you like an angry child? Because music usually comes
- 22:16Speaker 2: from some feeling of youth, I feel like. Like a
- 22:19Speaker 2: lot of that blast-off energy does, like real music, like real,
- 22:23Speaker 2: you know, like whether you're going to become a musician
- 22:25Speaker 2: or like an anarchist or a peeping Tom, that shit
- 22:28Speaker 2: comes out of your childhood, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Crime and art. Yes. yes fuck yeah vandalism and art
- 22:37Speaker 1: uh yeah uh yeah there was the bad kid part
- 22:42Speaker 1: of it and i think that's always been associated with
- 22:47Speaker 1: rock and roll at least in our case because we
- 22:50Speaker 1: just gravitated that that was our shit like we were
- 22:53Speaker 1: into music so now we're in a band and let's
- 22:57Speaker 1: go how do we get in the grown-up club to
- 23:00Speaker 1: play you know we were kids you know how do
- 23:03Speaker 1: we get in there it's like well get write some
- 23:05Speaker 1: songs you know get better and get up there do
- 23:08Speaker 1: something and but it was yeah always the bad.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Was your brother the same i know because you he's not.
- 23:14Speaker 1: A bad kid i mean he kind of is bad
- 23:18Speaker 1: and he was down for vandalism and shit too but
- 23:21Speaker 1: He's not as bad.
- 23:23Speaker 2: He's down for vandalism. That has to be going on
- 23:26Speaker 2: his headstone if he ever passes away.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Down for vandalism and shit. Occasionally. Sorry to admit it.
- 23:31Speaker 1: You know, it gets like more of, you're going to
- 23:35Speaker 1: need another stone. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Oh, dude, that'd be great. Two stones. Because you're just,
- 23:40Speaker 2: because yeah, there's a little more to tell about him.
- 23:43Speaker 1: People don't get buried anymore though. Yeah.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Did you see that stat that like, they're like, where
- 23:48Speaker 2: are all the bodies going?
- 23:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I mean, they're, Throwing them in Lake Lanier
- 23:54Speaker 1: or something? I don't know. Yeah. Where all the ashes go.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I want you to take me up to the top
- 24:00Speaker 1: of Stone Mountain, and I want you to throw my
- 24:02Speaker 1: ashes all over those Confederate fuckers up there, all right?
- 24:04Speaker 2: Dude, one of my friends who works at TSA, he
- 24:07Speaker 2: said that, I was like, what's some of the things
- 24:08Speaker 2: that have been left in the thing?
- 24:10Speaker 1: Ashes.
- 24:10Speaker 2: He said four times they've had people that left somebody's
- 24:13Speaker 2: ashes and never came back to get them.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Where's Uncle Larry? Oh, I've... Is that a layover? Yeah, totally.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I asked you to go pick up your racist uncle
- 24:24Speaker 1: Seth's ashes. What are you doing with them? I fucking
- 24:28Speaker 1: left them on the plane.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Fuck, they're in Salt Lake City.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:32Speaker 2: God. But that's wild, bro, that it ends up like that.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Like I came online probably like as a human and
- 24:40Speaker 2: maybe just like my brother listening to stuff like Dio, GNR,
- 24:47Speaker 2: Black Crowes, one of the early albums that he had,
- 24:49Speaker 2: you know, watching him like move his body. Our family
- 24:52Speaker 2: could never dance well. He would kind of like. And
- 24:53Speaker 2: we shared a room, you know? And sometimes he would
- 24:56Speaker 2: set his weights down and fucking put it on and
- 24:58Speaker 2: make me watch him kind of, which was the first
- 24:59Speaker 2: time he and I ever like kind of engaged.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Listen, man, I'm going to put my weights down and
- 25:03Speaker 1: I'm going to boogie a little bit. You cool with that?
- 25:06Speaker 1: That's never happened to me.
- 25:07Speaker 2: It was kind of crazy, but it was like.
- 25:09Speaker 1: You know what? This is more of my... I'm going
- 25:11Speaker 1: to take down this badminton set. Then we're going to
- 25:14Speaker 1: have some canopies. And then you're going to all watch
- 25:19Speaker 1: me dance. Yeah, okay.
- 25:21Speaker 2: So, yeah, a little different.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:23Speaker 2: A little different.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I didn't lift weights.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Yeah, he just, like, yeah. But that was, like, when
- 25:28Speaker 2: I first kind of came on with music and, like,
- 25:30Speaker 2: watching it through my brother.
- 25:31Speaker 1: It's funny. That was the way a lot of people got,
- 25:34Speaker 1: you know, I wouldn't have known about, like, my dad.
- 25:38Speaker 1: My dad had, like, Johnny Guitar Watson records and Jimmy
- 25:42Speaker 1: Reed records and Bob Dylan records. He had a lot
- 25:44Speaker 1: of Moe's Allison and all sorts of eclectic stuff, but
- 25:48Speaker 1: more kind of stuff. But my neighbor up the street,
- 25:51Speaker 1: his older brother, he had like all the Aerosmith records
- 25:55Speaker 1: and shit. So we would like, and his mom was
- 25:58Speaker 1: a dance teacher. So she had a stereo with this
- 26:01Speaker 1: big loud speaker on it. And we would get down
- 26:03Speaker 1: there and fucking, that's when I was like, oh, I
- 26:06Speaker 1: like Aerosmith, you know. Dude, yeah. ACDC. Because that's the
- 26:10Speaker 1: time you're around the neighborhood pool, you know. So everyone
- 26:14Speaker 1: at the pool would be like, Back in Black, when
- 26:16Speaker 1: that shit came out, it was on the radio every
- 26:18Speaker 1: five minutes. You know what I mean? And you were like, damn.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Dude, you remember when the radio was like this omen,
- 26:24Speaker 2: and if it served to your song, it felt like
- 26:27Speaker 2: a volcano had gone off just for you.
- 26:29Speaker 1: It was exciting. Oh, man.
- 26:31Speaker 2: And we all had it in common. That was one thing, too.
- 26:34Speaker 2: That was one thing that I liked about.
- 26:35Speaker 1: And you'd think all the records were good, but it
- 26:37Speaker 1: was really just a promo guy getting, like, hookers and, like,
- 26:41Speaker 1: steaks and lobsters to the program director to be like,
- 26:45Speaker 1: fucking play this record. You'll get a BJ out of this.
- 26:47Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, all right. I fucking
- 26:50Speaker 1: love this record. Oh, dude. These guys are like Mac
- 26:54Speaker 1: McTurner Overdrive, but even better. You know what I mean?
- 26:58Speaker 2: And they'd have such a mix.
- 27:00Speaker 1: If you like BTO, you're going to fucking love these guys. Whoa.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Yeah, dude. So many of those radio stations. I worked
- 27:11Speaker 2: as a tour manager one time for a musician, and
- 27:14Speaker 2: we would go to this guy, Josh Kelly, actually. He's
- 27:17Speaker 2: out of Georgia as well. He's from Augusta, Georgia. His brother,
- 27:19Speaker 2: Charles Kelly, played with Lady Antebellum. But we would, I
- 27:23Speaker 2: was his tour manager, so we would just go all
- 27:25Speaker 2: around to these radio stations, and I'd have to get them, like,
- 27:28Speaker 2: donuts and stuff in the morning and coffee. But you're right,
- 27:30Speaker 2: they'd be like, at 11 o'clock today, we're having lobsters.
- 27:33Speaker 2: It's like listening for lobster. And you'd have just some
- 27:37Speaker 2: Muppets show up.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Snow tires. You know what? When the Black Crowes came out,
- 27:40Speaker 1: I bought a lot of snow tires. I didn't know
- 27:43Speaker 1: I was buying them. Till later in life when they
- 27:45Speaker 1: show what you paid for because you're the only fucking
- 27:48Speaker 1: band selling like six million records. You're like, who's got
- 27:51Speaker 1: a new set of snow tires at WW whatever in Bangor, Maine?
- 27:56Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, oh, they fucking played
- 27:58Speaker 1: She Talks to Angels 150 times last week. You know
- 28:00Speaker 1: what I mean?
- 28:02Speaker 2: Dude, that was, yeah, that's when it was more like
- 28:04Speaker 2: a music mafia kind of thing.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong. A lot of good, a good
- 28:07Speaker 1: song is a good song.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:10Speaker 1: And there's a reason that those, you know what I mean,
- 28:12Speaker 1: that those bands are those bands.
- 28:15Speaker 2: You ever had come out at a 7-Eleven or something
- 28:18Speaker 2: and somebody had cracked your windshield with a cane or
- 28:23Speaker 2: like a, one time a guy broke our windshield with
- 28:28Speaker 2: a little baby cradle. And what do you do? Well,

- 30:56Speaker 1: Nuggets!
- 30:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm just like going down some of
- 31:00Speaker 2: that memory road of those times, you know? Was your,
- 31:04Speaker 2: were your like, God, I feel like it'd be hard
- 31:07Speaker 2: to do something with your brother, dude. But also kind
- 31:09Speaker 2: of special you can if you really.
- 31:11Speaker 1: I mean, it took us a long time to get
- 31:14Speaker 1: to how special it is for us.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Who's a better brother, do you think?
- 31:19Speaker 1: Well, obviously me. It doesn't even matter who's right or wrong.
- 31:27Speaker 1: It's me, of course. I mean, that, what a ridiculous question.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I mean, I'm all, and that's your Christmas card.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I'm older. I'm older. I'm Sagittarian. I'm the lead singer.
- 31:39Speaker 1: It's me. Yeah. I don't know.
- 31:42Speaker 2: I think the things you really admire about him, like
- 31:45Speaker 2: my brother, I think is way better than me.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I don't really size it up like that, but the
- 31:50Speaker 1: things I admire about him, uh, are the same things
- 31:56Speaker 1: that like, ultimately I like, you know, he's a, he's a,
- 31:59Speaker 1: has an amazing heart inside of him. And he's a
- 32:05Speaker 1: really genuinely sweet person. He's very not, you know what
- 32:10Speaker 1: I mean? Um, the other things I love about him, he's,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and again, you know what I mean? When things are going,
- 32:17Speaker 1: when you're kids and all of a sudden you're in
- 32:19Speaker 1: a local band and then six months later you're selling
- 32:21Speaker 1: millions of records and, everything's different everything has changed the
- 32:26Speaker 1: pressure's on now you know blah blah blah i always
- 32:30Speaker 1: knew my brother was talented i chose to you know
- 32:33Speaker 1: we've we were writing these songs together we've always been
- 32:36Speaker 1: the rich and i's composition or the is the engine
- 32:40Speaker 1: for whatever the black crows are it's been that way
- 32:42Speaker 1: since we before it was anything But now I can,
- 32:48Speaker 1: especially because, you know, we made this last record and
- 32:50Speaker 1: Rich plays all the bass and all the guitars. And
- 32:53Speaker 1: I'm like, dude, I've fucking sat in the studio with
- 32:55Speaker 1: him since the first time we were in the studio
- 32:58Speaker 1: was 1987 or something. I've seen him do amazing things,
- 33:02Speaker 1: you know, like beautiful music, inspired, dynamic things. But now
- 33:09Speaker 1: I see like, oh, wow, I really see it more
- 33:12Speaker 1: than ever because I've... my perspective of what he is,
- 33:18Speaker 1: isn't tainted by any of my bullshit, whether that's my anger, resentment, ego, shit, whatever.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Ego is so dangerous.
- 33:27Speaker 1: And I could see it really now so much clearer
- 33:33Speaker 1: that it's like, uh, and by the way, when I
- 33:38Speaker 1: say that we live in a world, throw a foot,
- 33:41Speaker 1: you're in Nashville, throw a rock, hit a great guitar player.
- 33:44Speaker 1: You know what I mean? There's so many talented people,
- 33:47Speaker 1: so many talented musicians. And that is just the way
- 33:54Speaker 1: it is. But I really see my brother, I see
- 33:57Speaker 1: his uniqueness, and I see how special he really is
- 34:04Speaker 1: in that world of guitarists. And I've gotten to play
- 34:07Speaker 1: with some of the best musicians. You know what I mean?
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that's cool. That's cool to hear.
- 34:10Speaker 1: So lucky.
- 34:11Speaker 2: That's a nice thought. That's a nice compliment, too, I think.
- 34:15Speaker 1: If you ask Rich about me, he'd say, he's all right.
- 34:20Speaker 1: He's pretty good. How tough was it during some times? Like,
- 34:25Speaker 1: was there ever a part where you guys were like,
- 34:26Speaker 1: not only are we not going to keep playing, I mean,
- 34:29Speaker 1: I know you guys have storied throughout the years. It's
- 34:30Speaker 1: been like, you know, I'm sure like with any brothers
- 34:33Speaker 1: or with any bands where it's like things go apart,
- 34:35Speaker 1: things come back together. But was there ever a part
- 34:37Speaker 1: where you're like, shit, we might not even be brothers
- 34:39Speaker 1: after this, you know? Uh, yeah. I mean, the, like,
- 34:45Speaker 1: 2013 was, like, the last Black Crowes thing before we, and, yeah. Um,
- 34:53Speaker 1: I mean, we went a long time without, seven years
- 34:56Speaker 1: without speaking. No way. Um.
- 35:00Speaker 2: And would you have certain feelings sometimes, like, you wanted
- 35:02Speaker 2: to talk to him, or sometimes did that stuff get
- 35:04Speaker 2: clouded by, like, resentment and stuff? Cause I, I've had
- 35:07Speaker 2: moments like that with family members.
- 35:08Speaker 1: It was also kind of important to take the fucking
- 35:12Speaker 1: kettle off the flame a little bit. Cause sometimes those
- 35:15Speaker 1: things and your work and your relationship, you know, and these,
- 35:19Speaker 1: all of it was just to me like a kettle
- 35:21Speaker 1: on the stove. Just no one's going to, no one's
- 35:25Speaker 1: going to flip the thing. So it stops like, but
- 35:30Speaker 1: I think he needed that too. So it wasn't, I mean,
- 35:35Speaker 1: I was, yeah, whatever. I was ugly and mean. I
- 35:38Speaker 1: lashed out when I shouldn't have. I should have reached out.
- 35:43Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 35:43Speaker 2: Yeah, dude. I've held resentments that were only like, and
- 35:47Speaker 2: I was the only one thinking about them. Some of
- 35:49Speaker 2: them weren't even real. That's the crazy shit.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Of course, of course.
- 35:52Speaker 2: That's the crazy shit.
- 35:53Speaker 1: You think people give a fuck and they don't. You
- 35:55Speaker 1: know what I mean? About whatever you're doing sometimes. I mean,
- 36:00Speaker 1: I've been lucky too to just, have whatever, you know.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Um, to keep it moving.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 2: It sounds like that.
- 36:08Speaker 1: And I don't, I really don't like to, it's exhaust,
- 36:11Speaker 1: you know, I've tried to, for better, for worse, not
- 36:14Speaker 1: to be a liar in my life because the idea
- 36:17Speaker 1: of telling someone a line and having to remember what
- 36:20Speaker 1: the fuck you said, that wasn't the real thing that
- 36:23Speaker 1: happened or however it happened to you or, you know,
- 36:26Speaker 1: everyone's truth is their own thing or whatever. But yeah.
- 36:29Speaker 1: But you know what I mean? They would be the
- 36:30Speaker 1: same thing. Anything kind of, fake or whatever. I'd rather,
- 36:35Speaker 1: I'm cool. You know, I, not everybody has to think
- 36:40Speaker 1: I'm great, you know, like, but meaning also, I don't
- 36:43Speaker 1: have to act a certain way to pretend that that's
- 36:46Speaker 1: something that is, well, it's just not normal. It's just not,
- 36:52Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Oh yeah.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Well, a lot, I was just thinking of this as
- 36:54Speaker 2: you were saying it, dude, I was like, you cut
- 36:55Speaker 2: your head kind of turns into like, to like a library.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I know that's kind of like a dumb play on words,
- 36:59Speaker 2: But it's like now I have to go back in
- 37:01Speaker 2: the shelves.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Figure out what the fuck. I mean, that would be exhausting. Dude,
- 37:05Speaker 1: that was a lot of like– I think I was
- 37:08Speaker 1: probably lying to survive.
- 37:10Speaker 2: I don't even know what I was doing. I think
- 37:11Speaker 2: for certain years of my childhood, I was like, I
- 37:12Speaker 2: don't even know what's going on. But like I'm still alive.
- 37:16Speaker 2: I'm going to keep going. And then one day you
- 37:17Speaker 2: start to kind of get a little bit better perspective
- 37:19Speaker 2: of yourself and things start to adjust a little bit.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Was y'all's band always going to be the Black Crows?
- 37:27Speaker 2: Was there ever anything else it was going to be?
- 37:28Speaker 2: I know it had different names before that.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Well, we were a band called Mr. Crow's Garden in Atlanta. Yeah.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Was it ever going to be a different animal? It
- 37:35Speaker 2: was always Crows.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, maybe we, I don't really, yeah. We
- 37:40Speaker 1: didn't want to, we liked being, people just referred to
- 37:43Speaker 1: your band and like those guys are in the Crows
- 37:46Speaker 1: or whatever. Right. So we, I mean, I don't know.
- 37:49Speaker 1: We liked that. And that's why we kept the E
- 37:51Speaker 1: in the name because Mr. Crow was the guy's name
- 37:55Speaker 1: in this book, Mr. Crow's Garden. That this girl had
- 38:00Speaker 1: in her dorm at the University of Georgia and she
- 38:02Speaker 1: showed it to me. And that's just the way it was. Like, oh, yeah, cool.
- 38:06Speaker 1: It's like psychedelic and like kind of 60s. And we
- 38:10Speaker 1: liked that aesthetic. But yeah, by the time... You know,
- 38:16Speaker 1: I remember we drove, there was a place called Rome, Georgia.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, I've heard of it. I think I did
- 38:22Speaker 2: a show, actually. No, maybe I didn't. I've heard of it.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's north, kind of east of Atlanta, I think.
- 38:29Speaker 1: There used to be, I don't know if it's still there,
- 38:30Speaker 1: a boarding school called Darlington or whatever. My dad went
- 38:33Speaker 1: there and my brother went to boarding school there, which
- 38:37Speaker 1: is funny. And there was a little club there and
- 38:41Speaker 1: we had a gig and we drove up there and
- 38:43Speaker 1: we had made our first album. And we drove up there.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Were we all driving, you remember?
- 38:49Speaker 1: A van. We had a van. It was probably my
- 38:51Speaker 1: dad's van or something he let us use.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Fuck yeah, dad.
- 38:54Speaker 1: We drove up there. Way to go, Big Stan. And
- 38:58Speaker 1: we said, by the time we fucking roll in the
- 39:00Speaker 1: parking lot, we're like, we're the Black Crows. Everybody hip
- 39:02Speaker 1: to that. This is what it is. We're the Black Crows.
- 39:07Speaker 1: That's what we are. We go in. We fucking set
- 39:10Speaker 1: up our shit. We do sound check. And we're playing.
- 39:13Speaker 1: jealous again, twice as hard, like songs that would later,
- 39:17Speaker 1: you know, that record would be.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 39:19Speaker 1: The band, we get off stage, there's a bar down
- 39:22Speaker 1: the street. We're going to go have a couple drinks.
- 39:23Speaker 1: The band that is opening for us was like a
- 39:26Speaker 1: dad and his daughter and their cousin or some family shit.
- 39:32Speaker 1: And they set up and we were like, all right, weird.
- 39:36Speaker 1: So we come back. We're the Black Crust. We walk
- 39:39Speaker 1: in the club. The only people there are the dad,
- 39:43Speaker 1: the daughter, and the cousin in the band. And they're
- 39:46Speaker 1: sitting at a table eating Subway sandwiches. And I'm like,
- 39:50Speaker 1: we're the Black Crows. And we played Jealous again. And
- 39:53Speaker 1: they're just like eating their sandwiches. They're like, three people,
- 39:57Speaker 1: four people. I was like, oh, fucking hell. This isn't
- 40:00Speaker 1: going well.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Those were school. And it was at a school?
- 40:03Speaker 1: No, it was at a club. Yeah, but just somehow
- 40:05Speaker 1: they put these people on, you know, the family on
- 40:09Speaker 1: the bill. The only way this story could be better
- 40:13Speaker 1: is if they had been a Christian group. But I
- 40:15Speaker 1: don't know. Oh, dude. I can only hope.
- 40:19Speaker 2: One time there was a guy that was kind of
- 40:20Speaker 2: hitting me up. I don't know if he was a
- 40:21Speaker 2: pedophile and he thought I was young.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Let's hope he was.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Oh, for sure, dude. Because look, he needed something to
- 40:28Speaker 2: do in his older years. But maybe he thought I
- 40:30Speaker 2: was young. Because a lot of times pedophiles are old.
- 40:32Speaker 2: He's like, I'm so bored.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Yeah. It's time to commit a crime against all nature.
- 40:41Speaker 2: But I'm just saying that, like, because sometimes pedophiles will
- 40:44Speaker 2: drive by and you'll be like, no, I'm 40, you know? Like,
- 40:47Speaker 2: they just don't, you know what I'm saying?
- 40:48Speaker 1: It's your hair.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and some of them don't have good glasses. It's
- 40:51Speaker 2: all types of things.
- 40:51Speaker 1: It's eyewear.
- 40:52Speaker 2: It's health care. It's a lot of stuff.
- 40:54Speaker 1: The guy's not wearing his prescription. He's wearing the glasses
- 40:58Speaker 1: with the big nose because he's on the sex offenders registry.
- 41:01Speaker 1: He doesn't want anyone to recognize him.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Well, I miss the old pedophile that at least had
- 41:07Speaker 2: the peeping Tom, the ladder hanging out of the back
- 41:10Speaker 2: of the truck.
- 41:11Speaker 1: The old pedophile was your family like, don't sit on
- 41:14Speaker 1: Uncle Oscar's lap. You know what I mean? They're like,
- 41:16Speaker 1: why would they invite the pedophile uncle? He's like, kids
- 41:20Speaker 1: want some quarters? Like, no. You know what we want?
- 41:23Speaker 1: We want justice for your victims. You fucking sick fuck.
- 41:28Speaker 1: That's what we want.
- 41:29Speaker 2: He's like, I got to roll the quarters in the
- 41:30Speaker 2: middle of my pants.
- 41:31Speaker 1: You're like.
- 41:32Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Who wants to dig for loose change? Fuck, you know.
- 41:38Speaker 2: But, dude, those are the– back when they had pedophiles,
- 41:40Speaker 2: it was just a different time. I mean, now they
- 41:41Speaker 2: have them, but now they're, like, rich.
- 41:43Speaker 1: People are doing it. Dude, I was thinking the other day,
- 41:44Speaker 1: there's a famous character. It could be on Sonny and
- 41:48Speaker 1: Cher or Maude or anything, the guy who runs over
- 41:52Speaker 1: in a coat and, like– Totally. It's like– That's a
- 41:55Speaker 1: character on movies and TV shows. He'd have a hat
- 42:00Speaker 1: on and he'd run over there. That's a guy. Yeah.
- 42:03Speaker 1: It was a thing that was on. You just saw
- 42:06Speaker 1: it as a kid on TV. Hey, there's that guy.
- 42:08Speaker 1: As if he was a colorful neighborhood character. Yeah.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Like a dude selling.
- 42:13Speaker 1: It's fucking horrible. By the way, that's a Flasher Bizarre
- 42:19Speaker 1: Raincoat people, which is a great band name. We're Flasher
- 42:23Speaker 1: Bizarre Raincoat people. You're going to love us. I mean,
- 42:29Speaker 1: really love us.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you this. I remember one time my
- 42:33Speaker 2: uncle was in Atlanta and I didn't really know him.
- 42:35Speaker 2: It was like a girl. My dad had like a
- 42:37Speaker 2: daughter from his first marriage. He drops him off over there.
- 42:40Speaker 2: She had an Italian husband. who was like semi out
- 42:42Speaker 2: of work, kind of had an advertising agency and played
- 42:45Speaker 2: mariachi music at night, right? So he takes me to
- 42:48Speaker 2: the wine shop or whatever, because I think he wanted
- 42:50Speaker 2: to go talk to a woman. So he just dropped
- 42:52Speaker 2: me off in there for a little while. A flasher
- 42:55Speaker 2: comes up, a lady goes, I remember this. She's like,
- 42:58Speaker 2: have you seen my kitty? And I'm thinking like, I
- 43:00Speaker 2: was probably 12 maybe. And I'm like, I'm in this
- 43:03Speaker 2: store and I'm looking at these big bottles, they had
- 43:05Speaker 2: some big bottles of wine. And I was thinking like,
- 43:07Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't think so. And then she
- 43:09Speaker 2: just showed her, body like that the front of her
- 43:12Speaker 2: body or you know cooter and breast or whatever and
- 43:15Speaker 2: i didn't know what had happened really i didn't know
- 43:16Speaker 2: if i was in trouble.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Cooter and breast that's the new pub everyone's going to
- 43:21Speaker 1: in nashville it's right over by donuts and dildos yeah
- 43:24Speaker 1: there's a father we don't go there anymore there's a
- 43:27Speaker 1: father and daughter they're eating subway right now if you
- 43:29Speaker 1: pull up but uh but that was a crazy time
- 43:32Speaker 1: where i saw a flasher weird In the liquor store.
- 43:36Speaker 2: In the liquor store.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Good. How old were you?
- 43:37Speaker 2: I was probably 12, maybe.
- 43:38Speaker 1: That's a perfect place for you to be when you're 12. Yeah.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Why don't you just wander around? Why don't you wander
- 43:44Speaker 1: around the French whites over there? Yes, those are Bordeaux's.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a puif we say, if you know what
- 43:50Speaker 2: I mean.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. If you don't like the fumet, it's nice
- 43:53Speaker 1: as well. I'll be back in an hour and a half.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Have some salted peanuts. Yeah.
- 44:00Speaker 2: But fuck that was the days when any other any
- 44:02Speaker 2: building that was open was kind of a babysitter you
- 44:04Speaker 2: know like parents would just drop you off or like
- 44:07Speaker 2: significant people in your life.
- 44:09Speaker 1: The day my parents realized like they could split for
- 44:11Speaker 1: the weekend and like Rich and I probably wouldn't die
- 44:15Speaker 1: they were gone you know what I mean like here
- 44:18Speaker 1: they would leave but like this is an emergency $ 20
- 44:20Speaker 1: bill yeah And then it would be like, there's two
- 44:23Speaker 1: gallons of ice cream and steakums in the refrigerator. They
- 44:27Speaker 1: had these things called steakums and they were like.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Bring them up.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Those bitches were nasty. Bring them up. Thin slices of
- 44:33Speaker 1: some sort. Steakums.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Every time you ate them, a dolphin died somewhere.
- 44:38Speaker 1: By the way, I mean, hey, Post Malone, you should
- 44:41Speaker 1: get steak him on your face. That would look cool.
- 44:44Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Whoever, who's got face tattoos?
- 44:47Speaker 1: Jelly Roll. Jelly Roll, get fucking steak him.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Oh, he would definitely be good for steak him. Yeah, slice,
- 44:51Speaker 2: get the whole thing. You should get steak, um, not anymore,
- 44:55Speaker 2: you know, since he lost so much weight. That'd be crazy.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Steak, um, no thanks. Yeah. No thanks. Dude, that's rocking, bro.
- 45:06Speaker 1: At least on your neck or something. Steakums.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Did you, oh, steakums, yeah, it is more of a
- 45:11Speaker 2: neck thing than a face thing. I think we're getting
- 45:13Speaker 2: to that place where people are going to start renting
- 45:15Speaker 2: out their body spaces for exactly for tattoos. Just people
- 45:18Speaker 2: to survive. We're already at the place where, you know,
- 45:20Speaker 2: a lot of people are selling their bodies on OnlyFans
- 45:23Speaker 2: and over their phones and stuff like that. So it's
- 45:25Speaker 2: definitely getting to a unique spot.
- 45:27Speaker 1: What do you mean? They're selling their bodies?
- 45:29Speaker 2: Just like selling sexual videos and stuff.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 45:31Speaker 2: I guess that's not their bodies, really. I mean, they're souls,
- 45:35Speaker 2: but whatever. Actually, it might be more.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Just kidding.
- 45:39Speaker 2: It might be more souls.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Whatever. It's the oldest profession in the world.
- 45:43Speaker 2: I agree. And look, I've supported it, so I'm not, you.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Know, no big judgment. I mean, to you, I'm glad
- 45:49Speaker 1: you have a healthy relationship with it after the kiddie
- 45:51Speaker 1: lady at the liquor store when you were 12. That's traumatic.
- 45:54Speaker 2: I still try as hard as I can to remember
- 45:56Speaker 2: what she looked like, and I can't exactly. I can
- 45:59Speaker 2: remember the outline of her. but I can't remember the
- 46:01Speaker 2: end line, and that's what I think I wanted.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I didn't see her, but if I close my eyes,
- 46:05Speaker 1: I see the green lady from Star Trek. Ooh, bring
- 46:08Speaker 1: her up. I don't remember her exactly, but I believe.
- 46:13Speaker 1: I know it's your memory. There she is. It's her, right?
- 46:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it was her. It was her, dude.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Sorry. God, dude. I knew it.
- 46:22Speaker 2: But yeah, I remember that. I'm trying to think of
- 46:24Speaker 2: what else.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Kids today, they have everything at their fingertips. When we
- 46:27Speaker 1: were kids, you had to wait until the Green Lady
- 46:29Speaker 1: episode of Star Trek came on, which was probably only
- 46:32Speaker 1: once or twice a year. Yeah.
- 46:34Speaker 2: You had to play back a movie. You had to
- 46:35Speaker 2: play back a movie and try to pause it right
- 46:38Speaker 2: at the spot where there's a part of a tit
- 46:40Speaker 2: or whatever.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, it was, you know.
- 46:41Speaker 2: And you had to listen so hard for somebody coming
- 46:44Speaker 2: in the front door because there's only one TV in
- 46:45Speaker 2: the living room. You didn't have your own TV in
- 46:47Speaker 2: your room to touch your body to or whatever.
- 46:50Speaker 1: To put your weights down and touch your body.
- 46:53Speaker 2: And dance for your brother.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Or myself.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Or whoever. Once we got a mirror in my room,
- 46:58Speaker 2: he didn't need me anymore. That was the crazy part.
- 47:02Speaker 1: That's the worst.
- 47:03Speaker 2: It was the wildest, dude. And we had a lady.
- 47:05Speaker 1: It's good to know. That's a good, you know, all
- 47:09Speaker 1: of it is adding up. You know, the rejection of
- 47:11Speaker 1: that deep wound. Oh, dude. And the beaver lady, kitty lady.
- 47:19Speaker 2: It was there.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Yeah. And you probably, did you ever work in a
- 47:22Speaker 1: liquor store after that? You're like, this is pretty nice.
- 47:25Speaker 2: No, we did a shrimp and video, though. We had shrimp.
- 47:27Speaker 1: We'd shrimp out a pound and come run a movie
- 47:29Speaker 1: over there. Pat, shrimp and video. But did you have
- 47:32Speaker 1: other movies other than Forrest Gump? Yeah. We just had
- 47:37Speaker 1: 200 copies of Forrest Gump. And one copy in the
- 47:40Speaker 1: back of Forskin Gump, which is a different movie altogether.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Bro, I had no fucking clue you were this hilarious, dude.
- 47:48Speaker 2: That's awesome. Thank you, bro. I was having a shitty day.
- 47:51Speaker 1: I know. Foreskin Gump usually isn't in the press release
- 47:54Speaker 1: before I show up. But I said, you know, fuck it.
- 47:57Speaker 1: You're drinking Sonic and shit. I'm like, might as well.
- 48:00Speaker 1: You know what I mean? You know what I mean?
- 48:03Speaker 1: After the whole Foreskin thing, I'm not getting any fucking.
- 48:06Speaker 1: Who's going to have me? You know what I mean?
- 48:10Speaker 2: Foreskin Gump, yeah. What did we watch?
- 48:13Speaker 1: I actually saw that on the spine of a porno
- 48:17Speaker 1: in New York in the Old Tower Records by Lincoln
- 48:20Speaker 1: Center up there. To be honest with you, full disclosure,
- 48:25Speaker 1: I wasn't in the porno section. I was obviously going
- 48:28Speaker 1: around to the free jazz documentaries. And no, I wasn't.
- 48:33Speaker 1: But I saw it. They didn't have.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Oh, and is that guy in blackface?
- 48:40Speaker 1: They did it. Let's hope again, let's hope it's worse
- 48:43Speaker 1: than we could ever imagine, but they had all the
- 48:46Speaker 1: covers off of the video. This was before DVDs. They
- 48:50Speaker 1: had all the covers off of them, but just the
- 48:52Speaker 1: words in black. And there's a thousand words in my
- 48:56Speaker 1: brain goes for skin gum. I've never forgotten.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Dude, that's great. Yeah. I don't remember the first porn.
- 49:03Speaker 1: I knew my, I saw they had a stack of
- 49:05Speaker 1: videos and I remember jerking off and blacking out.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Um, I just couldn't handle it. I couldn't handle having
- 49:11Speaker 2: any feelings, especially not that much at once. And it
- 49:14Speaker 2: was like, ah.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Well, they say the first time is, you know.
- 49:19Speaker 2: It's all you need. You're never the same. You're never
- 49:23Speaker 2: the same. Did you have, because I know you had
- 49:25Speaker 2: experience with drugs and stuff over the years. Did you
- 49:28Speaker 2: try different drugs and thinking that they would help you
- 49:31Speaker 2: write or create certain music? Was there ever any of
- 49:33Speaker 2: that energy? Or is that something that musicians even do, really?
- 49:37Speaker 1: I mean, I've... I've always done my writing. I might
- 49:43Speaker 1: be a little stoned sometimes, but I've never did drugs
- 49:47Speaker 1: to write. You know what I mean? I mean, I've,
- 49:50Speaker 1: but you know, like psychedelics, they're in my writing, but
- 49:56Speaker 1: I don't take psychedelics to write. All of it, all
- 49:59Speaker 1: of it's in there. You know, I mean, I was
- 50:01Speaker 1: a person fairly well adjusted in some ways. I never
- 50:11Speaker 1: took drugs to blotto myself out. I always, I, I truly,
- 50:15Speaker 1: and talking about romance, my romantic relationship with drugs and okay,
- 50:20Speaker 1: those lines can become blurry at a certain point in
- 50:23Speaker 1: my life. But, uh, I always kind of knew what
- 50:28Speaker 1: was going on. Um, I was never into speed and shit.
- 50:32Speaker 1: I mean, I was a Coke person and, you know,
- 50:36Speaker 1: hard drugs.
- 50:37Speaker 2: That was my forte in the nineties.
- 50:39Speaker 1: And, But, uh, speed, thank God, like only a few
- 50:43Speaker 1: times I ever tried it. I was, it was just
- 50:45Speaker 1: the worst feeling thing. It just didn't go with my chemistry. But, uh, I, yeah, I've,
- 50:53Speaker 1: it was, I've, I fucking love drugs. You know what
- 50:55Speaker 1: I mean? I don't do them. I'm, I'm six, almost,
- 50:58Speaker 1: I'm going to be 60 years old this year. And, uh,
- 51:03Speaker 1: and I love my life and my responsibility and, um,
- 51:09Speaker 1: And to do what I do, I can't do that.
- 51:11Speaker 1: You know what I mean? You know, it's to sing
- 51:13Speaker 1: and sing at a high level, hopefully, to the workload is,
- 51:17Speaker 1: you know, when you're 25, you can do that shit
- 51:20Speaker 1: and get up and. Oh, yeah, dude.
- 51:23Speaker 2: It's a different story as you get older. I'm in
- 51:25Speaker 2: recovery now from drugs and it's like. Yeah, dude, I
- 51:29Speaker 2: liked it. And if they came out with a version
- 51:31Speaker 2: that was better for you.
- 51:33Speaker 1: They have it. It's called pharmaceutical cocaine. It's just really
- 51:37Speaker 1: fucking hard to get.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Are you serious?
- 51:40Speaker 1: I mean, I tried it. I didn't even know.
- 51:43Speaker 2: That they had pharmaceutical cocaine.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's on another. Look it up. Yeah, bring it up.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Put it up.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Bring it up. Let's see what Bear Monsanto is up
- 51:54Speaker 2: to this week, huh? New pharmaceutical cocaine, that's what we're
- 51:58Speaker 2: looking for probably?
- 51:59Speaker 1: Well, even the old one I think is better than
- 52:01Speaker 1: the average old. Oh, really? I got this at the
- 52:03Speaker 1: bowling alley cocaine.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I got it when the bag was still warm
- 52:07Speaker 2: from somebody's hand.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Of course.
- 52:10Speaker 2: And if you didn't do it while it was warm,
- 52:12Speaker 2: it was bad. It was like Chinese food. Pharmaceutical cocaine
- 52:17Speaker 2: refers to purified cocaine hydrochloride used in controlled medical settings
- 52:21Speaker 2: distinct from illicit street forms. It's classified as a Schedule
- 52:24Speaker 2: II narcotic. controlled substance in the U.S. due to its
- 52:28Speaker 2: medical value despite high abuse potential. Yep.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Fantastic. Huh. That's the best Yelp review I've ever read.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Dude, it makes me think about this. My favorite joke
- 52:43Speaker 2: I ever heard, right? It goes, what's the last thing
- 52:48Speaker 2: you want to hear when you're giving a blowjob to
- 52:50Speaker 2: Willie Nelson? I'm not Willie Nelson.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Okay.
- 52:55Speaker 2: I don't know why that's it's not my joke and
- 52:57Speaker 2: i don't know whose it is but it's my favorite
- 52:59Speaker 2: joke ever so for some reason i just had to
- 53:02Speaker 2: share it with you i like it i like it
- 53:03Speaker 2: thanks man thanks all i.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Can think about is a sea of red and gray
- 53:09Speaker 1: pubic hair now yeah that's all i will i'll go
- 53:13Speaker 1: to sleep thinking oh yeah cheers.
- 53:15Speaker 2: I can't remember what she had she could have had
- 53:17Speaker 2: a Connor.
- 53:17Speaker 1: I have no idea. You were just so shocked. I
- 53:20Speaker 1: was so shocked that somebody would do this. I couldn't
- 53:23Speaker 1: understand that there was nothing under it. This was in Atlanta.
- 53:26Speaker 2: This was in, uh, yep. This is in Atlanta, right
- 53:28Speaker 2: off of like, I want to say peach tree one,
- 53:30Speaker 2: not road. Right. They're all peach trees.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Like there's like, there's a few.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Something civil rights Boulevard. It was something like that. It was,
- 53:38Speaker 2: it was a lot of action.
- 53:39Speaker 1: That's every street.
- 53:41Speaker 2: It really was. Do you remember a time when you
- 53:43Speaker 2: got the highest you ever did in your life? Like,
- 53:45Speaker 2: do you remember a time when you got too high,
- 53:46Speaker 2: kind of?
- 53:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, a couple times. A couple times I got
- 53:53Speaker 1: too high. One time, our old keyboard player in the
- 53:59Speaker 1: Black Crows in the 90s, this guy Eddie Harsh, Ed
- 54:02Speaker 1: was older, you know, and he'd been in the blues scene,
- 54:05Speaker 1: and Ed was really my drug professor, you know, and
- 54:10Speaker 1: he taught me a lot about Not just music and stuff,
- 54:13Speaker 1: but especially, you know, the underground business we were in
- 54:17Speaker 1: at the time.
- 54:18Speaker 2: He looks a little native, huh?
- 54:19Speaker 1: He's Ukrainian, actually. Oh, wow. Yeah, his parents came to
- 54:23Speaker 1: Toronto after World War II.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Oh, Canadians are good.
- 54:27Speaker 1: But one night we were on the bus, and he
- 54:30Speaker 1: had like a couple of bags of shake, fucking weed,
- 54:34Speaker 1: and he talked like this, man. You know, he's like, man,
- 54:36Speaker 1: I'm going to go get some brownie mix at the
- 54:38Speaker 1: truck stop. I'm like, all right, all right. I'm fucking,
- 54:41Speaker 1: I don't know. You know, he comes in the bus
- 54:43Speaker 1: and he, he takes two bags of shake and pours
- 54:48Speaker 1: it in this little thing of microwave brownie mix. And
- 54:52Speaker 1: he mixes that shit up. He's like smoking a cigarette shit.
- 54:55Speaker 1: And he put that in there and I was like,
- 54:57Speaker 1: all right. I mean, I don't know how fucked up
- 54:59Speaker 1: can we get? And he put the icing on it
- 55:02Speaker 1: and he said, you eat half and I'll eat half.
- 55:05Speaker 1: And I was like, uh, uh, Then I was a
- 55:10Speaker 1: racer head. You know what I mean? It was a nightmarish.
- 55:15Speaker 1: It was either 10,000 days or five minutes of complete
- 55:21Speaker 1: mind ripping hell of like the, I thought there's only
- 55:26Speaker 1: death can save me. And I just, it was just done.
- 55:31Speaker 1: I just didn't know. You know what I mean? I
- 55:33Speaker 1: was like, Oh, I'll eat half of it. It was
- 55:35Speaker 1: the dumbest shit I ever did in my life. Except
- 55:38Speaker 1: the only worst drug experience I ever had, I was
- 55:41Speaker 1: a kid, and a kid at my school gave me
- 55:43Speaker 1: some Redman chewing tobacco. But just like a piece like this,
- 55:47Speaker 1: I fucking put that shit in my mouth, and my
- 55:52Speaker 1: parents had gone out or whatever. Five minutes later, first
- 55:57Speaker 1: it felt amazing. The stars were brighter. The world had
- 56:01Speaker 1: a warm glow. 30 seconds after that, I can still
- 56:05Speaker 1: taste the back of my teeth from throwing up so
- 56:08Speaker 1: horribly in my parents' bushes at our house. Yeah. In
- 56:13Speaker 1: Jackson's Creek subdivision. Sounds like the worst CWT. Fucking honky. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:18Speaker 1: The worst CW show. This episode, you know, Skyler gives
- 56:23Speaker 1: Jasper chlamydia. You know what I mean? Where did you
- 56:26Speaker 1: get it? I don't want to tell you. I got
- 56:30Speaker 1: it from Uncle Oscar. Yeah, this week. Well, he's not
- 56:34Speaker 1: my uncle. You're Uncle Oscar. This week on Jackson's Creek.
- 56:38Speaker 2: I could totally see it, dude. Fuck, bro. Yeah, there
- 56:41Speaker 2: was something about being in the neighborhood. There was something
- 56:43Speaker 2: about doing drugs, dude. I loved it. I remember.
- 56:46Speaker 1: I was scared of drugs so long. I didn't start
- 56:49Speaker 1: until I was older.
- 56:50Speaker 2: Dude, I remember one time doing some shit. Somebody gave
- 56:55Speaker 2: me something supposed to be cocaine or something, and I
- 56:57Speaker 2: knew it was like a performance-enhancing drug, right? And this
- 56:59Speaker 2: is the second time I'd ever– this is the first
- 57:01Speaker 2: time I'd ever gotten it for myself. I'd done it twice,
- 57:04Speaker 2: like out in Tucson. I was working as a busboy,
- 57:06Speaker 2: and people said it was like a performance enhancer, right?
- 57:09Speaker 1: You will be able to clean these tables so much
- 57:11Speaker 1: better than you were doing– wait, you dropped a fork.
- 57:14Speaker 2: A hundred percent.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Yeah, right?
- 57:16Speaker 2: A hundred percent, though. So I did this shit. I'm
- 57:18Speaker 2: down in Baton Rouge, and I just start– I was like, well,
- 57:20Speaker 2: I'm going to go for a good run. I'm going
- 57:22Speaker 2: to get a strong run in. So I'm running, I'm
- 57:24Speaker 2: stopping and doing this shit. And at a certain point,
- 57:27Speaker 2: I was, I just got, I got really squirreled out.
- 57:30Speaker 2: Like I was afraid to run, right? But I was
- 57:33Speaker 2: wearing umbros, remember umbros shorts? I was wearing umbros and
- 57:36Speaker 2: shoes and no shirt, right? And I was like, oh man.
- 57:39Speaker 1: It's typical Louisiana menswear. I get it.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Typical twink on the train tracks type of energy, okay?
- 57:46Speaker 1: You're like, okay.
- 57:48Speaker 2: So I'm running right through like Tigerland, which is like
- 57:51Speaker 2: right around LSU campus. And there was like a fence.
- 57:53Speaker 2: And so I jumped in these. I jumped over this fence.
- 57:55Speaker 2: I was like, I can't be. It's too many people
- 57:57Speaker 2: are out here driving by. Jump over this fence. And
- 57:59Speaker 2: I'm in kind of like a backyard area. And they
- 58:01Speaker 2: had like a little bird bath or whatever. And I
- 58:04Speaker 2: remember I was drinking out of that bird bath when
- 58:06Speaker 2: the people came outside.
- 58:08Speaker 1: They're like, what the fuck are you doing? You're like,
- 58:10Speaker 1: I'm trying to get a tapeworm. What does it look
- 58:12Speaker 1: like I'm doing?
- 58:14Speaker 2: What do you think I'm doing?
- 58:15Speaker 1: I'm just stopping for water. I'm ingesting gas. Water and
- 58:18Speaker 1: bird feces. So mind your own business. I'm having an episode.
- 58:26Speaker 2: I'm having a Hurricane Katrina martini.
- 58:30Speaker 1: I was in Baton Rouge a few years ago, and
- 58:32Speaker 1: we went to get some food, some good food. It
- 58:37Speaker 1: was a little bit out of town. And at the time,
- 58:41Speaker 1: Camille and I, we weren't married yet, but I had
- 58:44Speaker 1: a Prius at the time. I don't know, the shame.
- 58:47Speaker 1: But I remember eating and looking out at the restaurant,
- 58:50Speaker 1: and I was like, man, I haven't seen a Prius
- 58:53Speaker 1: since I got into Louisiana. I saw fucking trucks and
- 58:57Speaker 1: fucking more trucks and shit. I was like, if we
- 58:59Speaker 1: pulled in here in a Prius, they would fucking kill us.
- 59:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not.
- 59:03Speaker 1: I mean, this was a while ago.
- 59:05Speaker 2: It's frowned upon.
- 59:05Speaker 1: No, it's frowned upon. Maybe the Prius stigma's over there.
- 59:10Speaker 1: or something, or they don't even have them anymore.
- 59:11Speaker 2: I don't know. It would still be kind of frowned
- 59:13Speaker 2: upon a little bit, but it'd be understood maybe.
- 59:15Speaker 1: I had one because I wanted to know what erectile
- 59:19Speaker 1: dysfunction felt like. Oh, yeah. So I got one.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:22Speaker 1: And then I was like, this isn't so good. This
- 59:24Speaker 1: isn't for me. Yeah.
- 59:27Speaker 2: God, dude, that would be my band name. Probably erectile
- 59:29Speaker 2: dysfunction over the years. You know, they say anywhere worth

- 1:02:06Speaker 2: that you had a, like a, you're a Grateful Dead
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: fan and that you guys have kind of crossed paths
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: over the years.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: And you've played with, um, some of their musicians.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Yeah. I spent a lot of time in the old
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: realms of the GDs. Yeah.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Um, did you go to, uh, Bob Weir's funeral?
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I did not. I did not. I wasn't, uh.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Or were people even invited to it? I don't even
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: know how to say that.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure they had a private service for
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: him and then they had a public thing. Um, Yeah,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: I mean, I was super lucky to, you know, rise
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: to the ranks of so many musicians that I respected
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: and loved. And, you know, we were talking about Bob today,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: and I was like, Bob's great, his great gift is
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: his truly unique, truly outside-the-box musician. um somebody who just
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: his whole that's how he was you know i mean
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: just very unique bob weir you know like no one
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: thought like him or played like him or you know
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: and that's again when you look at the world of
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: music full of unique characters full of unique voices full
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: of talented people sometimes troubled people what you know what
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: i mean just the And then you have someone like
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Bob who really stood out. I mean, that's what made
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: The Grateful Dead so special. It's funny how things that
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: start off like that and then become sort of so
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: popular with, you know, it starts off, I mean, The
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Grateful Dead started off as like kind of scary, like
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: art rock, acid, heavy acid. You had to be pretty brave,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: I think, to go see The Grateful Dead in 1968. Yeah.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Because you were coming out on the other side. You
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: know what I mean? Like, ooh, there was no micro-dosing,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: you know. And back then, you know, there was no
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: coward's dose, as I call it. Like, guess what? A
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: guy at Columbia University said I could take mushrooms. I'm like, what?
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Yeah, read this article.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: What about all of us in the fucking trenches for years?
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: What about us all over here who bought a cow?
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: Yeah, what about all the brain damage we have? You
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: know what I mean? I could have told you that shit. Oh, dude.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: No brain damage. I'm just kidding.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: No.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: But see that? You said you like Cheech and Chong.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Think about it. Now we're talking about I took a microdose.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: I'm happy, by the way. Don't take my being sarcastic wrong.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: Whatever it takes to get you through the night to
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: have a nice life. And deal. I'm happy. But, you know,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: like in Cheech and Chong, when he's like, he goes,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: that's the most acid I ever saw him take. He's like, oh,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: and he's like, oh, he's like laughing at her. Like,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: that's the drug scene we grew up in. Like, go ahead, man.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: I hope you have like a month. You know what
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I mean?
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Look at him right there. People don't even realize how
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: much that scene has been used in other movies since then.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: because of that scene, right? It kind of goes back
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: to like what we were talking about earlier.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: That's false advertising, that. I always, my favorite shit in
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: the whole movie, though, is the thing when he's like, yeah,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: these are waiter uniforms. He's like, yeah, man, we want
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: to look the same, but different, you know, like a band,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: you know? It's the fucking, anytime, you know, someone's like, yeah,
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: they look like a band, you know?
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I know Curtis, man. Oh, I don't even remember that.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: My brain's a little bit bad sometimes. I think I
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: had an amnesia. Fuck, I don't know what it's called. Good,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: at least it took away whatever it's called.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: You got kicked in the head by a mule? Is
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: that what it's called? Wherever your brain is, there's fucking
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: something wrong with it. I think I got that, bro.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: You're like, yeah, something happened to my brain. I got
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: kicked in the head by a mule.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Was there an artist's death over the years? I mean,
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: I know that's a weird question, but was there like
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: an artist's death that you feel like, had the most
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: effect on you as a musician kind of? Or just
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: as like a human being, I guess?
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, yeah, but probably my personal
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: friends who have passed away who are great musicians have
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: always affected me. Todd Schneider passing away, dear friend.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: Bring up a picture of him.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: Special, special person. Freak. Freak in the world. Lovely, lovely person.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: I had a very special friendship with him. Very sad. But, like,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: big people that I don't know or whatever, like, when
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Prince died, I was— Dude. Because I grew up— I mean,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: I fucking love Prince so much.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: Prince hurt a lot of people. Like, I remember a
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: lot of my friends being a lot more shocked than
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: I thought they would when Prince died.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I thought Prince would have got a little more murals
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: and t-shirts, but it looked like David Bowie got all that.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: And I love David Bowie too, but I was like,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: I just, I mean, Prince, ever since I, you know,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: I grew up in Atlanta when I was like, before
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: I got into like rock and like sort of punk
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: and indie rock scene, I played a little high school
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: basketball and I was obsessed with funk and Pete Funk Records,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: George Clinton, but I was there like Zap, Gap Band, SOS, Slave, Prince,
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: The Time, Vanity Six. I was like Rick James. Dude,
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: that's sick. I loved Rick James, man. As a matter
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: of fact, I have a scar under here. Rick James
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: was playing the Cool Jazz Festival at the old Atlanta
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Fulton County Stadium, and my dad knew a DJ at V103.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: fm which was like the funk station so this is
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: kind of all before like rap music takes over and
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: i had tickets to go to go see rick james
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: and cameo who i mean cameo was the other one
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: that i loved and frankie beverly and maize was on
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: there a bunch of bunch of r & b bands
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: and my friend had got a bottle of vodka and
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: we got so fucked up the day before that i
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: jumped in this my parents found me in the neighborhood
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: swimming pool in the shallow end with my I jumped
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: in and my chin was cut open. I was bleeding
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: in the pool and people were like, get the fuck
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: out of the pool, man. I was 15 years old.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: I was like, I'm going to get out of the
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: fucking pool. You get out of the fucking pool. I mean,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: I'm out of my mind. And I look up and
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: there's my mom and dad or my brother and I
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: had missed basketball, like spring basketball practice or whatever. My
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: dad's like, what the fuck are you doing? Why are
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: you bleeding in the pool? I was like, what? And
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: I got in the car and I was just like, hey,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: another thing. You guys know that Rick James had a hovercraft?
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: He fucking does. I mean, I'm pretty sure he does. Whatever.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: I'm just drunk, my brother. like, you need to fucking
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: smell like booze and you need to shut the fuck up.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: I'm like bleeding. I go get stitched up. I go home.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: I pass out. My dad fucking kicks me awake at
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: like fucking five in the morning. I have a full
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: grown up hangover. It's five in the morning. He's like,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: we're going for a run. We fucking run three miles.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Stan?
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: It was like the great Stan Tini. We run three miles.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: I didn't throw up or anything. We got to like
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: the last 50 yards and he was like, man, you
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: know you're not going to that fucking concert today. I
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: was like, God damn.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: He said no.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: He said, you fucked up yesterday. What do you think?
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: What did they do? Guilt me. What do you think
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: your mother thinks? She's probably happy that I'm safe and all.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: they never let you answer that what's done is done
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: father yeah they never let you answer that so I
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: never saw Rick James.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Did you uh that is a that is a bad
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: one oh dude one of the first shows I ever
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: went to Smashing Pumpkins actually my buddy and I had
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: a pedophile that dropped us off at um Marilyn Manson
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: when we were underage we were probably I think 14,
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: 15 he dropped us off at Marilyn Manson at the
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: Rendon Inn over there in New Orleans which was pretty
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: wild um But the first concert.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: You have like an exorbitant amount of pedos in your neighborhood.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: You know that, right? I mean.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: We were kind of kids who were like looking for
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: like people to be around. And so I didn't.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Who's around are like creepy dudes. I'll take you guys. Yeah. Yeah, totally.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: So it's always like, oh, we, you know, and you
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: don't realize there are guys that pedo. You think he's
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: just a cool guy. Then you get older. You're like, oh,
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: that guy was 37 hanging out with us.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: You know, smoking pot and fucking trying to.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Hey, I'll wait for you guys in the parking lot.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: Trying to tickle everybody.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: Totally.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: Horrible. It's so gross. It was crazy.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: Dude, the craziest part was, though, my best friend Scott,
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: his dad knew the guy who was like the pedo guy,
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: this one guy, Mr. Richard. So I would write letters
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: from Mr. Richard to my buddy Scott and mail them
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: to his house all the time.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: That's fucked up.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: And his stepdad was- And good shit. That's good shit, too.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: I get it.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: I like the, you know, you're just- That's the shit
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: I love, bro.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: I know. Just the psychological torture. Yes. Yeah, I get it.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: I get it.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: And his stepdad would be like, oh, you still talking
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: to this motherfucker? And he'd come in and just throw
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: the fucking mail right at him. And they already had
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: the worst relationship.
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: And he didn't know, right? No, he had no idea.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: He thought it was the real guy.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: No idea, dude. I'd send him like four Christmas cards
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: every year from this dude, bro. Because when you're a pedophile,
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: I bet they fucking love Christmas, I bet.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: You know? I mean, yeah.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: Because it's just an old dude stopping in and getting
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: fucking and relating with children. That's all it is.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: Dude, look at the old Christmas pictures. Your parents took
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: you down to some guy, some drunk in a beard,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: and you sat on his lap. He's like, you know
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: what I mean? I'm sure. If Boy Scout guys are pedos,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: then the Santa guys, there had to be one, one
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: or two. It's like, oh, we went to the Easter Bunny.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: I know the Easter Bunny had an erection. You know
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: what I mean? How could you tell? I could just
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: fucking tell. You know what I mean? And it wasn't
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: about pagan rabbit fucking. This was real.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: No, this is real.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: God-given.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: Blood to muscle erection.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: Yeah. The science of the thing.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you. Yeah, yeah. That's great. Somebody's a pedophile
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: and their friend is just the scientific guy.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: It's the science of the thing. You know, it's a
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: scientific thing.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: You've gotten open and have opened for you like so
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: many amazing groups. Is there like a tour or a
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: part of... like your music or I guess even maybe
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: your musical life that you would go back to and,
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: and redo if you could kind of, I know you
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: said you're not a go back guy.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it is what it is. You know what I mean? Like, again, I,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: and I've had the opportunity in life if I've made,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Uh, if I, if I,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: if there was something that, that I felt what, that,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: that I was involved in when that was rude, I
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: don't know, whatever. I've had the opportunity to tell people, man,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: that was fucked up. You know what I mean? Whatever.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: I mean, I mean it. I wouldn't say it if
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: I didn't mean it. But I don't care to change anything.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: You know, they say, what's your letter to your younger self?
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't know if that would have meant anything.
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: That's a good point. What younger self would give a fuck?
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: You know, it's funny because I was saying the other day, like,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: I love Steven Tyler. He's been supportive. He's a friend.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: I'm always there for him. And I was telling the
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: story when we sold a lot of records on the
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: first record, he called me and goes, save your money, man.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: And I was like, I'm 24. I'm like, I'm not
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: saving my money. Like, I love you. And I appreciate
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: the wisdom because you've been through it all in this business.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: I've made one record. You know what I mean? Like I,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: I appreciate, I did appreciate the advice, but I was
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: also like, I'm a, I, No way. Am I, no
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: way is this, I'm not just made the first record
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: and had this success and now's the time to play
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: it safe. You know what I mean? I was like, well,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: that doesn't make any sense to me.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: That's a good point. Did you get something, did you
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: ever get something that was pretty wild kind of like
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: something cool?
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: No. Like a skull or something like a human bone
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: or whatever? I mean, someone gifted me a human skull later. Um,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: that was through weird Grateful Dead stuff. There was no
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: members of the Grateful Deads.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: It was like at a park and like a, like
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: a trade, like at one of those.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: No, no. Somebody gave it to me. But I, you
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: know what man, I, my, my extravagance has always been
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: the same. I like clothes and I like travel. I
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: like to travel. I'm obsessive. Uh, I'm obsessed with food.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I'm obsessed with, cuisines from my travels and around the
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: world like grapes and stuff like that food just the
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: food you know what I mean yeah um a lot
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: of my downtime when we travel is based around food
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: so that's a bit bougie but really all I spend
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: money on truly is uh books and records you know
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: I've been collecting records since I was 12 um and
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: books as well so It's just a giant clusterfuck of,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: you know, I moved out of my parents' house in
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: 1987 with just cases of records and boxes of books,
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: and it's still the same thing, kind of. Yeah. But, yeah,
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: I'm not a car guy. Yeah. I don't have, like,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: rare guitars and shit.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I don't really, like, I don't really spend
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: money on almost anything. I kind of, I care about it,
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: but I guess you're right. Like, getting to go places,
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: I'm realizing, is a little bit more important. I was
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: just in, have you been to Oahu?
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: No. No, I was in Kauai once.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Oh, that's cool. Yeah, I went to Oahu. They had
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: like a surf competition going on. It's like a real one,
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Not like the Brady Bunch?
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Right, but yeah, they had this competition was going on.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: But it only happens if the weather permits. So like
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: each morning, you kind of have to get there and see.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: If it- And hope that the conditions are- Yeah, and hope.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: That the conditions are cool. But it's pretty incredible just
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: to- When.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: I go to the ocean things, I like to go
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: to Jamaica. I have a lot of.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: You ever see Diplo down there? I think he has
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: a house down there.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: He's a DJ. I've never been invited. I'm kind of
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: in the country, too. A place called Bluefield. It's been very... Bluefields, Jamaica?
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: Bluefields Bay, yeah. In Westmoreland. There's Bluefields, yeah. Actually, I
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: stayed at that place, the second one to the left. Yeah,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I stayed at that place. No way. A long time ago. Wild.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: But the hurricane was brutal there. Brutal. Brutal. It was
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: really sad. But Jamaicans are incredible people.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: So that's your place if you choose to go to
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: a beach that's your spot?
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: I like to go to Jamaica, yeah. I like Jamaicans.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I like Jamaican food.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: Bananas and meat.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: I like sweet sop and sour sops. There you go.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: Oh, that looks good.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: We have a Jamaican dog that's named Bami. Bami. Because
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: in Jamaica, we eat a cassava root that's kind of
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: deep fried like a hash brown. It's called bami. There's
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: a piece of bami. So that's kind of the color
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: of our dog when we found her. She was a
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: street dog in Jamaica.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: Oh, did you ever meet that guy down there, McAfee,
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: that virus guy? You ever meet that guy?
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: No, when I go, I've been going for years. We
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: always just take off to the country. You know what
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: I mean?
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: Just chill.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: I have really close people there, the most soulful people.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: Incredible people. And we just fucking play dominoes and laugh.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: And there's Bambi Longface. It's our Jamaican dog.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: That's a nice animal, huh?
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: She's the best. She has another name. The perfect one.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: You've always been an animal lover?
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: Yes. We have a cool cat, too. Yes, I love pets.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: I love having pets. But I didn't have rabbits and
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: you know, guinea pigs and horses. No, I love horses.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: I don't ride, but I love them. Yeah. My wife's
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: a horse girl.
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: I'm not good on them.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: I've done it. I mean, it's fun. I liked it.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: I like, I would be, I wish I'd grown up. Um,
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: we didn't do shit in my house. That's why I
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: was busy watching all these weird movies and getting weird
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: and listening to records. You know what I mean? I
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: did play little league football and I did martial arts
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: when we were kids and, played basketball. You know what
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: I mean? I did shit like that. And when I
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: was a kid, you know what? I liked to fish
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: when I was a kid. Oh, fishing's fun, huh? I
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: haven't done it in like 40, 50 years. I don't know. Really?
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: You haven't done it in that long?
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: No.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: Who took you fishing?
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: My racist uncle Bruce. Yeah. Yeah. Cause my dad didn't
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: really give a fuck about fishing. Yeah. Sometimes, but I
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: didn't know he, I didn't know he was like that then,
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: but I liked it cause we would go down to
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Florida and do saltwater fishing. And then being in Georgia,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: we would do bass fishing and stuff. It was fun
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: when I was a kid, but I haven't done shit
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: like that forever. Yeah. Sometimes I'm too busy reading Jean Cocteau.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Um, one, one more question about, uh, music. And
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: then I want to hear a little bit more about
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: your new album. Um, And the new album, it's called
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: A Pound of Feathers.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: The band made a record called A Pound of Feathers.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: The band, in this case, was just me and Rich
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: and our drummer, Cully. In this record, we went in
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: the studio without any songs. We just had some ideas
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: and riffs. And we wanted to do it that way.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: We wanted to do something that was more spontaneous and
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: on the fly, really, and see where that took us
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: you know so we ended up my joke with friends
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: was we could have done it in five days if
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: we had written any songs but it took eight or
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: nine days or whatever for the whole album yeah yeah
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: it was beautiful you know what i mean we were
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: on a roll we we i mean rich has parts
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: and i have i will i'll go and have like
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: five or six notebooks full of ideas but that doesn't
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: mean anything either because a lot of times i'll just
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: pull things out of the sky or whatever um No
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: matter what, the world changes. We're talking about buying snow
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: tires and blowjobs for program directors at rock radio stations
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: The good old days, Reaganomics.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Yeah, when you could sell some fucking records too. Yeah, dude,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: that was fucking Reaganomics. For us, it's always like that
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: was just a part of the business that was adjacent
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: to what we loved and wanted to do, playing in
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: a band. And it's funny because all these years later,
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: we realized that making records, you know, we're not going
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: to be, we're not going to have, we're not going
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: to sell many records. We're not going to sell any records,
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: but this is what it is. But for us to
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: get in there and to know, you know, and to
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: feel that way and to realize like, look, man, when
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: we got started, we didn't know shit, except we knew
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: what was authentic and real in our hearts and what,
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: music meant to us. And if we're going to join,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: you know, when our, our first record came out, I'm like, dude,
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: we're in, look, you can go in a record store
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: and there's black crows records, but there's John Coltrane records.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: Brian Adams, Leonard Cohen.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Right. And other Canadians as well. But, or whoever,
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: you know, the multitude of things that, that we loved
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: in the time, you know, how important record stores were.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: that we're a part of something meant something to us.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: It still does. And that we can still have a
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: vibrancy about what it is we want to do and say, um,
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: that we can have those moments where I'm sitting there
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: and we're writing these songs and it works. And I
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: don't care if it works again in, in other, uh,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: in another construct, it works for me and my brother.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Cause this is, we wrote, started writing some songs at
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: mom and dad's and, you know, here we are. Yeah.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: And it's, and now our songs are in people's lives
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: and that kind of thing, but that it's still fucking
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: energy that I like that I can look around and
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: the fucking darkened time that we're in and muster the
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: vibes to make something and feel, this is what I
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: want to say. My poetry doesn't have to have any
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: message other than it's humanity, other than, you know what
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: I mean?
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: The connection I want through the things that I've done,
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: the things that I am, the things that I dream up,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: my imagination, you know what I mean? I always laugh because,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: have you ever seen Barton Fink, the movie Barton Fink,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: the Coen Brothers movie? No.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: Actually, I think I tried to watch it. Let me
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: see a picture of it.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: John Turturro plays this guy who goes to L.A. It's
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: a movie about writer's block.
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: It looks just like Eraserhead.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, totally, totally. But there's a scene in the
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: movie with a writer. He befriends another writer who's a
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: Southern guy, and he's kind of, I guess, based on, like,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: William Faulkner or something was in California. I don't know,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: but he has this real, Barton Fink's really passionate. You
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: write for the common man. And how do you, you know,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: how does, how, where do the words come from that
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: you could communicate like that? And he, and he's a drunk,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: the other writer, and he's from the South and he goes, well, Barton,
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: I like to make things up. And I was like,
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I was like, that's it. You know what I mean? Like,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: it kind of is what it is. And it's the
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: same things. I, I don't have a toolbox at home,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: but I like to write and I like to, you know,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: I like to dream. And this is a dreamer's paradise.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: I've made, I've made my own reality out of my
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: limitations as a like fully functional like person because of
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: whatever the way my mind works. And it helps if
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: you sing good, whatever, you know what I mean? And
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: you like to, get on stage and keep people interested.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: There's a bit of the old, it's like Bob Dylan says,
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: I'm a song and dance man, you know what I mean?
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: So I'm that as well.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, the other night a girl was talking about
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: her music for so long that she got up and
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: sang for me, and it was some of the worst
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: stuff I've ever heard. And for 70% of our time together,
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: I was there with her, and then it fell apart
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: in that last 30%. So I think the sharing it.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: The how you share it is right.
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: But I do think it's interesting... Like, it is a
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: dreamer's paradise. And one thing that you don't want to lose, like,
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: no matter how, like, bleak times seem or how dark
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: certain things are that are going on, is that we
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: have to stay creative, right? Like, as much as it
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: hurts or as it's tough or it's, like, it's not
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: easy to sit and do, to think of, like, oh,
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: I can be creative right now. I think if we
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: lose that, then that's going to be really bad, you know?
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: Agreed. Agreed. I mean, and that's... Again, I think the
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: inspiration of all of these things we are seeing have
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: all been played out before. We've seen it. And the
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: reality of that is we'll see this come to some
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: sort of look. Like I said, who knows between then
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: and there. But I refuse to... I refuse to... allowed
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: defeatism to rule my life i refuse to let the
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: fear and ignorance of the whole thing dictate my my
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: every fucking thing yeah you know what i mean because
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: i i don't know because i think you had like
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: you said you have to and i and i'm And.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: We can get addicted to the new, you get addicted
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: to that stuff. And then it takes over your time.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: It takes you of your life and it takes your
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: flame down and it takes your, and you're like, what
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: am I doing here?
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: You know, it might be, I mean, it's not even
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: escapism to me because I need to, when we were
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: talking earlier about how I have to keep my head
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: or I have to devote myself to whatever the thing is,
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: it's the muse that keeps my creative energy where I
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: want it to be and what it means. Um, in this,
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: in the exact same respect, if these things, these things
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: cycle through people, you, yeah, it's proven again, you can't stop.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: You know what I mean? And I don't know. I,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: I feel, I feel like, I feel like I, you can't, again,
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: I'm not, I don't want to put my head in
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: the sand cause that doesn't help. Yeah. But I do realize, uh,
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: that we're on the beach. Oh, yeah. Well, I do realize, too,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: that there's a lot of footprints on the beach. You
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: know what I mean? People have been coming to this
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: beach for a long fucking time. We just kind of
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: have to remember that as well.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: I mean, you know, people romanticize and they, in any
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: time in history, tyrants and people who, kings who have
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: become deranged and You know, the abuse of power and
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: ego and all these things. And you can see what happens.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: You know what I mean? You see, you know what
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: I mean? It goes for a while, but then it's
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: over because humans don't play that, you know?
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: If there's like a song that we use when we
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: ride in a battle, say this has to happen, right?
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: And we won't put you on a horse or me.
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: I'll be in the back. I'll be the medic.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: I think catering would be better for me. I don't know.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Can I still get a medal? You know what I mean?
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: At least, you know, the catering will be like very enjoyable.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I mean? Like, sorry, sorry, El Comandante.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: That's the wrong white wine with the Branzino.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: Do we, what song do we listen to when we're
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: riding a battle, do you think? Maybe it doesn't have
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: to be like the perfect song, but what's a good one?
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: Well, it's definitely not Onward Christian Soldiers. That doesn't have
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: a good beat. I can't dance to it. I don't know.
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: Would it be It's a Long Way to the Top
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: if you want to rock and roll by ACDC? That
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: might be a good one. Yeah.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: Play that real quick. I want to make sure that
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: I'm on the right one of that.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: You had it.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: I did?
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: What about your new tour? Can you tell us? Obviously,
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: it's tougher touring now. Is there anything that's super different
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: about it?
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: There it is.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: Oh, Whiskey Myers. That's right. I saw you guys at Ascend,
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: I think, like two years ago. And then I saw
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: you in New Orleans, like. I think it might have
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: been the 90s probably, or no, maybe 2000s.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, we've put many times. This tour is
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: going to be super fun, you know what I mean?
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: They're a little bit country, and we're a little bit
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: rock and roll, and we're a little bit country, they're
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: a little bit rock and roll too. Got to work
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: on that chorus, Donny and Marie. What the fuck? Yeah,
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: I mean, touring, you know, I still love it. I
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: still think there's a lot of adventure to have, and
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: it's kind of some of the things we were talking about,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: There will be someone I never met. There will be,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: you know, we have a good time. It should be fun.
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: You know, touring's fun. It's called playing music. It's fun.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: It's hard sometimes when you get older and the crowd is,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: you know, people's phones put up sometimes a wall between
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: what we want to put out and what we want
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: y'all to pick up.
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: Oh, that's a good statement.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: You know, because now it used to be like this
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: and now it's, you know, what? Oh yeah. Or, Oh yeah.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: Instead of really feeling the music and hearing the music
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: and seeing where that could take you. That being said,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: I don't police anybody. You know what I mean? Like
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: y'all do what you want to do. I'm so happy
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: that you bought a ticket, no matter how you get there,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: what you do when you get there. That's up to you.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: I'm just saying that as a guy who's spent this
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: fucking lot of time on stage. And I'm the type
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: of performer who I need it. You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: I need something back. It feels good. That's when stuff
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: ceases to, it just flows all together. And those are
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: the shows and the moments that aren't hard. You know
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: what I mean? Yes. And those are the ones where
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: it's just like, oh, this is beautiful. This is everything.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: And we have that more than we don't.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: Yeah. But I know what you're saying. I noticed that
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: even when I've done that and I noticed how it feels.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: I went to see Aerosmith when they were playing Las
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: Vegas when they had the– this was like maybe three,
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: four years ago.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, their residency there. Yeah.
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: And there was one time when– when Steven Tyler came
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: right over by me and I was like trying to
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: get my father and I like, like miss this moment.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: I still just feel bad. I still think about, man,
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: what was I doing? You know, like what was I doing?
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: So instead of just, you.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: Know, let the quick silver that is Steven, like envelop
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: you as he went by.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Oh, I still, yeah. The best dude. Um, Chris Robinson.
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: Thanks so much, man. I appreciate it.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: Thank you, man.
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: I appreciate your time. Thanks for all the music. Thanks
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: for all the excitement over the years. Yeah, just the
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: time to get to come see you. Me and my
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: brother still talk about the Crows, so we still listen
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: to it together. So thank you so much, man.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: Thank you, man. Yep. Tell your brother I said hey.
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: I will, dude.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: Does he have big muscles?
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: No, no, but he's a smart guy. And he's kind
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: of like your brother, I think. He's probably the sweetest.
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: I think he's like the sweeter one of us. He's
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: a sweet guy, but just like he's a nice guy.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: Tell Rich I said hello.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: I will, of course. He'll love it.
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Thank you, brother.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Cheers. Now I'm just floating on the breeze And I
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: feel I'm falling like these leaves I must be cornerstone Oh,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: but when I reach that ground I'll share this peace
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: of mind I found I can feel it in my
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: bones
