- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, I just want to say thank you for taking some time out of your day to spend here with me.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: It is very meaningful that you're willing to spend some of your precious time listening to this podcast.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: And so today I want to actually talk about self-care ideas.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: And now, for those of you who may have rolled your eyes at the idea of somebody else talking about self-care, it is so important to find ways to nurture your body, your mind, and your spirit when things are just either we're having a bad day or maybe we're under a lot of pressure or a lot of stress.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: I know with a lot of my college student clients right now, there's a lot of pressure and stress around getting a new routine underway.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I know with my senior college student clients, they're under a lot of pressure not just to finish out these last couple semesters, but they're also worried about getting a job.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: You know, my adult clients, they're under tremendous amounts of stress and pressure, whether it be from work, whether it be from their personal lives.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: And even the little kids that I work with have their own stresses and press stressors and pressures.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: And it is so important to find ways to nurture ourselves because self-care is not just about bubble baths and spa days.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Self-care is about caring for yourself emotionally, physically, and mentally.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: And finding ways to practice self-care is important because it helps us recharge and refill our cup.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: And every one of us, whether we're, you know, little kids to mature adults, we all need to have the ability to practice self-care.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: So, what are some ways that you can nurture your mind?
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Ways that you can nurture your mind is mindfulness.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Practicing mindfulness is such a huge component to self-care.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Mindfulness involves allowing room for whatever thoughts and feelings are present in this moment, but without judgment, without criticizing or saying that it's bad or wrong, but instead being present in this moment.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Another way to nurture your mind is engage in journaling.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Expressing those thoughts and emotions and writing them down allows your brain to have an output channel.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Maybe you could read a book or listen to a podcast.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: When we spend that time nurturing our mind in a different way, nurturing our mind in a way that doesn't just sit and ruminate or judge, but allows us to learn, that can be a way to nurture and to practice self-care of our mind.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Another way to practice self-care is to challenge some negative thoughts and challenge them with what's actually true, right?
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: So we can combat our self-destructive thoughts by recognizing them, so noticing them, naming them, and then actually challenging challenging them with what's actually true.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: And then another way to trip to nurture your mind is to take a break, maybe from technology or social media.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Give yourself the ability to decompress from that.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: A way to care for yourself physically.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Exercise is a great way, just getting the body moving, or even yoga or some type of stretching mechanism because it engages your body in a positive way.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Take a warm bath or shower.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: You know, I often say it's not just baths and spa days, but those are ways to nurture ourselves as well, so I don't want to discount them.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Eating healthy, eating foods that are nourishing to your body.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Sleep is a huge way that we can practice self-care.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So often we just kind of poo-poo the fact that we didn't get enough sleep, and then one night of not enough sleep becomes two, three, four, and the next thing we know we're really running on very little sleep.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: And so taking time to create that atmosphere, taking time to create a routine, paying attention to what you need in order to have a good night's sleep is very, very important for self-care.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Going outside on a on a walk, just getting out into nature, getting out into the um out into nature, breathing fresh air, that is a way to also clear your mind, but also allow your body to sense nature and and breathe that in.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, your spirit, listening to favorite music that lifts your spirits and allows you to connect with it on a deeper level than just the cognitive level.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Engage in activities that bring you joy.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Oftentimes we talk about, you know, happiness, but instead it's about what fulfills me, what brings me joy.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Find things that actually bring you joy, whether it be painting or writing or drawing or just spending time with your animals, find things that bring you joy.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Spend time again with loved ones and pets.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: I routinely believe that pets are such a great way for us to practice self-care and connection.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and then a couple other ones, practice gratitude, engage in a hobby or an activity.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: It's really about finding some pleasure in even simple things.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: So when we're talking about self-care, it's finding pleasure in things like treating yourself to a cup of coffee or tea or water or some type of favorite beverage that allows you to sip it mindfully and be present with just that experience.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Watch a feel-good movie, spend time in the natural sunlight.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: You know, surround yourself by things that lift up your energy and give yourself permission to unplug and recharge.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: There are many, I have other suggestions on my website.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Um, there is a blog article on different ways that you can practice self-care, but the important thing when you're engaging in self-care is taking that time to reconnect to self.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So often we are so busy moving and doing things and accomplishing things that we don't take the time to actually connect with ourselves.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: So I do encourage you if you're interested in some of the other ways.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: I I have a blog article on the website about 50 ways to practice self-care, definitely go check that out.
