- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And when the woman saw that she
- 0:04Speaker 1: was not hid, she came trembling and falling down before him.
- 0:09Speaker 1: She declared unto him before all the people for what
- 0:13Speaker 1: cause she had touched him and how she was healed immediately.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Luke 8 47 Jesus, you are the author of life.
- 0:25Speaker 1: You are the one that can make dead things alive again.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And with this truth, I release faith and anticipation into
- 0:34Speaker 1: my day. I believe that with my whole heart, that
- 0:40Speaker 1: when life deals me blows of disappointment, and I'm bleeding
- 0:44Speaker 1: defeat from within, that just one touch from you can
- 0:50Speaker 1: change everything. When my faith is low and my energy
- 0:56Speaker 1: is drained, position me, Holy Spirit, in the place where
- 1:00Speaker 1: Jesus is, so that I can receive my healing and restoration.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I don't care about what others are saying or about
- 1:10Speaker 1: how many times I might get knocked down. I will
- 1:14Speaker 1: not stop until I am restored and made whole. In
- 1:21Speaker 1: the same way you healed the girl, Jesus, I pronounce
- 1:24Speaker 1: healing and life to flow into every place of my life.
- 1:30Speaker 1: because you are willing, Jesus. I realize that as I
- 1:35Speaker 1: activate my faith like Jarius, dormant dreams and dormant promises
- 1:41Speaker 1: will arise to meet my attention and affection. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Thank you for making prayer a priority in your day.
- 1:55Speaker 1: To learn more about the Bible, stay tuned for today's story,
- 1:59Speaker 1: brought to you.
- 2:15Speaker 2: The Little Girl and Bleeding Woman In our last story,
- 2:19Speaker 2: Jesus showed his authority over wind, rain, and sea. With
- 2:24Speaker 2: a word of might, he calmed the raging storm and
- 2:27Speaker 2: saved the apostles from certain death. Once the storm had subsided,
- 2:31Speaker 2: Jesus faced a man who was plagued with a legion
- 2:34Speaker 2: of demons. The man raged and thrashed with the unholy
- 2:38Speaker 2: spirit controlling his body. Jesus calmed the man's soul just
- 2:42Speaker 2: as he did the storm. Now we see the tender
- 2:45Speaker 2: heart of Christ take care of two girls. One had
- 2:49Speaker 2: suffered from a debilitating illness. The other had tasted death itself.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Jesus showed his compassionate power by kneeling down and healing
- 2:57Speaker 2: both of them. As inspired, by the Gospels.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Hello and welcome once again to the Bible in a
- 3:07Speaker 3: Year podcast. I'm Jack Graham. In our last episode, we
- 3:11Speaker 3: heard how Jesus calmed the stormy seas and cast out
- 3:14Speaker 3: a legion of demons with nothing more than his words.
- 3:19Speaker 3: He demonstrates his powerful command over the forces of nature
- 3:22Speaker 3: and the forces of evil in this world. As the
- 3:26Speaker 3: disciples witnessed his power, their wonder and amazement grew. even
- 3:30Speaker 3: though their faith remained immature and easily shaken. Today, we'll
- 3:36Speaker 3: see how the Lord cares for a long-suffering woman and
- 3:39Speaker 3: a dying girl. We will once again hear how God's mercy, grace,
- 3:44Speaker 3: and healing truly knows no limits and is available to
- 3:47Speaker 3: all without respect for age, gender, position, or background. So,
- 3:52Speaker 3: let's hear the Word of God today.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Another crowd flurried around Jesus. Their desperate cries for more
- 4:00Speaker 2: words of wisdom and acts of healing were deafening. His
- 4:03Speaker 2: popularity had stretched to the furthest reaches of Judea and Samaria.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Not a traveler passed through the land without hearing his name.
- 4:11Speaker 2: As Jesus often did, he walked beside the sea. He
- 4:14Speaker 2: enjoyed the way the water and wind amplified his voice
- 4:17Speaker 2: for all to hear. And if need be, he could
- 4:20Speaker 2: make a quick escape onto a boat if things got
- 4:23Speaker 2: out of hand. Jesus was tending to the crowd, teaching
- 4:27Speaker 2: them the ways of the kingdom. A faint yell could
- 4:30Speaker 2: be heard from the sea of faces. Jesus! he yelled.
- 4:34Speaker 2: His head was barely poking out of the vast crowd. However,
- 4:37Speaker 2: Jesus knew his voice. It was the voice of Jairus,
- 4:41Speaker 2: one of the synagogue rulers. Jesus gestured for him to
- 4:44Speaker 2: be let through. Jairus fell at his feet, sobbing. It
- 4:48Speaker 2: was odd for the people to see a man of
- 4:49Speaker 2: such power groveling before anybody. This showed Jesus' true influence.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Jairus looked up at Jesus and said, Please, Lord, my daughter,
- 4:58Speaker 2: my little girl, is sick to the point of death.
- 5:01Speaker 2: There is no pain like a parent in fear of
- 5:03Speaker 2: losing a child. Jesus could feel its palpable presence in Jairus.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Say no more, Jesus said. Lead on, and I will
- 5:12Speaker 2: go to your daughter. So Jesus got down from the
- 5:15Speaker 2: boat where he was sitting and stepped into the crowd.
- 5:18Speaker 2: They were violently seeking his attention. His fame had caused
- 5:21Speaker 2: a great deal of chaos wherever he went. The crowd
- 5:24Speaker 2: grabbed at him and shoved him in every direction. His
- 5:28Speaker 2: disciples took it upon themselves to make a way for
- 5:30Speaker 2: Jesus and Jairus to get through, but it was an
- 5:33Speaker 2: exhausting task. As Jesus made his way through the forceful crowd,
- 5:37Speaker 2: a small and quiet presence followed him. Her hand was
- 5:40Speaker 2: small and shaking. Her once beautifully lush face was gray
- 5:44Speaker 2: and fading. A woman followed closely behind Jesus, reaching out
- 5:48Speaker 2: to touch him. Her entire body trembled as blood slowly
- 5:52Speaker 2: dripped down her inner thighs. She had had a discharge
- 5:55Speaker 2: of blood for over twelve years. The seeping blood from
- 5:59Speaker 2: her lower half caused a great deal of pain and
- 6:01Speaker 2: sapped much energy from her. Yet worst of all, it
- 6:04Speaker 2: made her unclean in Jewish tradition. She was unable to
- 6:08Speaker 2: enter the synagogues or temples. She was unable to go
- 6:11Speaker 2: to feasts and celebrations. She was unable to marry. Her
- 6:15Speaker 2: last penny was spent on physicians. They could not help her.
- 6:19Speaker 2: She was hopeless and alone, until she heard about the
- 6:22Speaker 2: man named Jesus. She could see Jesus, so close yet
- 6:27Speaker 2: so far. He was only a few feet away, but
- 6:29Speaker 2: the violent crowd was continually tugging or tossing her to
- 6:32Speaker 2: the ground. She reached for him and missed. She tried
- 6:36Speaker 2: to call out his name, but the people were too loud.
- 6:39Speaker 2: She got up to her feet and tried to run
- 6:41Speaker 2: towards him, but someone pulled her back and her face
- 6:43Speaker 2: fell into the stony ground. She thought of giving up
- 6:47Speaker 2: and just remaining on the ground. She would be trampled
- 6:50Speaker 2: and her miserable life would be ended. No, she thought
- 6:54Speaker 2: to herself. If I could just touch his garments, I
- 6:57Speaker 2: know I will be healed. She lifted herself up and
- 7:00Speaker 2: crawled towards Jesus. In one last effort, she threw herself
- 7:04Speaker 2: towards him and barely touched the hem of his garment.
- 7:07Speaker 2: She fell to her knees. Jesus stopped and turned around.'
- 7:10Speaker 2: Who touched me?' he asked his disciples. They laughed. At
- 7:15Speaker 2: first they thought he was joking.' Are you serious? they
- 7:19Speaker 2: asked him. Thousands of people are grabbing at you, and
- 7:21Speaker 2: you ask, who touched me? Jesus shook his head. No,
- 7:26Speaker 2: he clarified, this was different. Jesus looked around and saw
- 7:30Speaker 2: the woman kneeling on the floor, being rammed in the
- 7:32Speaker 2: head by random people in the crowd. Jesus knelt down
- 7:36Speaker 2: and touched her shoulders. My daughter, your faith has made
- 7:40Speaker 2: you well. Go and be free, Jesus said with a
- 7:44Speaker 2: warm smile. Tears streamed down the woman's face. She was speechless.
- 7:49Speaker 2: No words could quite thank Jesus properly. So she bowed
- 7:53Speaker 2: to him and left. Please, Lord, we will be too late,
- 7:57Speaker 2: Jairus begged. Jesus stood to his feet and continued to
- 8:01Speaker 2: walk forward. As they made their way out of the
- 8:04Speaker 2: main streets, the crowd began to settle. Only a few
- 8:07Speaker 2: people remained, Jesus, Jairus, and the twelve disciples. They approached
- 8:12Speaker 2: the home and a member of Jairus' family ran to them,
- 8:15Speaker 2: His face was grim. Dried tears and dirt caked his face.
- 8:20Speaker 2: She's gone, he whispered to Jairus. Do not trouble the
- 8:24Speaker 2: teacher any further. Jesus overheard the two men whispering. He
- 8:28Speaker 2: interrupted them and said, It is not so, he said.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Do not be afraid. Believe in me and watch. Jesus
- 8:37Speaker 2: gestured for Peter, James, and John to come with him
- 8:39Speaker 2: into the house. In a small courtyard, many people were
- 8:43Speaker 2: wailing and weeping on the floor. The halls echoed with
- 8:46Speaker 2: tears and mourning. It was the saddest thing Peter, James,
- 8:50Speaker 2: or John had ever witnessed. It was clear that the
- 8:53Speaker 2: little girl meant a great deal to them. Jesus walked
- 8:57Speaker 2: up to the women weeping and asked,' Why is everyone
- 9:00Speaker 2: making such a commotion? The child is only sleeping.' The
- 9:03Speaker 2: woman scoffed at him. His words seemed insensitive and almost evil. However,
- 9:08Speaker 2: behind Jesus' questions were a promise. He took Jairus, his wife,
- 9:14Speaker 2: and the three men with him upstairs. They entered the
- 9:17Speaker 2: door and there lying on the bed was the girl's
- 9:19Speaker 2: lifeless body. She could not have been more than twelve.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Her once rosy cheeks were white. Jesus walked over to
- 9:26Speaker 2: her body slowly and knelt by the side of her bed.
- 9:29Speaker 2: He held her little hand in his. Jesus' eyes watered
- 9:33Speaker 2: as he held the little girl. Death was never God's intention.
- 9:38Speaker 2: He is the author of life. Jesus kissed the little
- 9:42Speaker 2: girl's hand and said, Talitha kumi, which means, little girl, arise.
- 9:50Speaker 2: The girl's chest began to rise steadily up and down.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Color was slowly returning to her face. Jesus smiled as
- 9:57Speaker 2: her beautiful brown eyes opened. She sat up, stretched, and
- 10:01Speaker 2: yawned as if she had awoken from a long nap.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Jesus laughed with joy as the others in the room
- 10:07Speaker 2: awed in amazement. The two parents rushed to their daughter's side,
- 10:12Speaker 2: kissing her and hugging her. Jairus wiped tears from his
- 10:15Speaker 2: eyes and looked up at Jesus with a face of gratitude. Jesus, Peter, James,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and John left the room so the family could be together.
- 10:23Speaker 2: As he left, he turned to one of the servants
- 10:25Speaker 2: and asked for her to bring the little girl some food.
- 10:32Speaker 3: As we begin today's reading, we find Jesus once again
- 10:35Speaker 3: surrounded by great crowds of people, each one eager to
- 10:39Speaker 3: hear his words and perhaps even witness a miraculous sign
- 10:43Speaker 3: as he heals someone from the crowd. Jesus' renown was
- 10:47Speaker 3: growing by leaps and bounds as more and more people
- 10:49Speaker 3: in the region heard what he could do. This was
- 10:52Speaker 3: certainly an annoyance, even a threat, to the religious leaders.
- 10:56Speaker 3: They wanted Jesus just to go away so they could
- 10:59Speaker 3: have control and power over the people. Of course, not
- 11:02Speaker 3: all of the religious elite despised Jesus, and today we
- 11:06Speaker 3: meet one such person, a synagogue ruler by the name
- 11:09Speaker 3: of Jairus. He had gone out that day to find Jesus.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Whether out of true respect and belief or just out
- 11:16Speaker 3: of sheer desperation, we do not know. But the fact
- 11:19Speaker 3: was that his precious young daughter was in bed at home,
- 11:22Speaker 3: sick and dying. Sickness and death are really the great equalizers.
- 11:28Speaker 3: No matter what one's wealth or power or position may
- 11:31Speaker 3: be in society, when illness or the threat of death comes,
- 11:35Speaker 3: we are all the same. We are all in a
- 11:38Speaker 3: helpless state. And so Jairus did what any loving parent
- 11:43Speaker 3: would do. He sought out every last answer in order
- 11:46Speaker 3: to try to save his child. Jesus was seemingly his
- 11:51Speaker 3: last hope. So when he found him that day, he
- 11:54Speaker 3: pleaded with Jesus, not from a position of authority, but
- 11:58Speaker 3: one of deep and desperate need of help. Jesus immediately
- 12:02Speaker 3: stopped what he was doing and went with Jairus. It
- 12:05Speaker 3: is a reminder that so often in life, the interruptions
- 12:08Speaker 3: are in fact an opportunity to for ministry. As Jairus
- 12:12Speaker 3: led him and they pushed through the crowd, suddenly Jesus
- 12:15Speaker 3: stopped and asked an unusual question. Who touched me? To
- 12:20Speaker 3: all around, it seemed to be a ridiculous question. There
- 12:23Speaker 3: were people everywhere. He was being touched all the time.
- 12:27Speaker 3: But Jesus had felt something different. Power had gone out
- 12:31Speaker 3: from him in that moment. And so a woman confessed
- 12:34Speaker 3: to touching him. hoping that even just a brush against
- 12:38Speaker 3: the hem of his garment would heal her disease, a
- 12:41Speaker 3: lifelong problem with bleeding which made her unclean and unhealthy.
- 12:45Speaker 3: This tragic condition had left her destitute and alone, unable
- 12:49Speaker 3: to even enter the temple of worship to worship God
- 12:52Speaker 3: or to celebrate with her people. Jesus looked at her
- 12:56Speaker 3: with kindness and grace and told her to go home
- 12:59Speaker 3: in peace and fully healed her because of her faith.
- 13:03Speaker 3: This is a great moment in Scripture which shows us
- 13:06Speaker 3: not only our Lord's caring heart and immense power, but
- 13:09Speaker 3: His ability to know when we cry out to Him.
- 13:13Speaker 3: It also shows us that Jesus had both full control
- 13:15Speaker 3: and full awareness of His power. Not everyone who touched
- 13:19Speaker 3: Him was healed, though certainly some in the crowd had
- 13:22Speaker 3: ailments that Jesus could have healed. But when this woman
- 13:25Speaker 3: approached Him with such faith and touched Him, Jesus allowed
- 13:29Speaker 3: healing power to depart from His body to meet her
- 13:32Speaker 3: deep need of healing and restoration. It wasn't by her
- 13:35Speaker 3: might or her actions or even her touch that she
- 13:39Speaker 3: was healed, but by faith and power in Christ. While
- 13:43Speaker 3: he was still with the crowd, someone came to inform
- 13:46Speaker 3: Jairus that his daughter had passed away. There was no need,
- 13:50Speaker 3: it seemed, for Jesus to proceed to his home because
- 13:52Speaker 3: nothing could be done. But as we know, what is
- 13:56Speaker 3: impossible for man is possible with God. I love how
- 14:00Speaker 3: Jesus responds in Mark 5, 36. But overhearing what they said,
- 14:06Speaker 3: Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not fear,
- 14:09Speaker 3: only believe. Oh, that we could live by those words.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Do not fear, only believe. Jesus continued on to the
- 14:19Speaker 3: home of Jairus, taking only his three closest disciples, Peter, James,
- 14:23Speaker 3: and John. They arrived to quite a scene. mourners already
- 14:27Speaker 3: wailing and making a commotion outside the home. He spoke
- 14:31Speaker 3: calmly to them, assuring them that the girl was not dead,
- 14:35Speaker 3: only sleeping. But nobody believed, and they laughed at his words.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Jesus then entered the home with his three disciples and
- 14:43Speaker 3: the girl's parents. And going to her bedside, he took
- 14:46Speaker 3: her hand and spoke tenderly over her. Arise, little girl.
- 14:52Speaker 3: And at his command, she shook off the chains of
- 14:55Speaker 3: death and rose, fully recovered and restored into the arms
- 15:00Speaker 3: of her joyous parents. Jesus is still speaking words to
- 15:05Speaker 3: God's children today, through the Bible, by his Spirit, calling
- 15:09Speaker 3: us who are spiritually dead to rise to a new
- 15:12Speaker 3: life that only he offers, the one who is the
- 15:15Speaker 3: resurrection and the life. This is the message, the glorious,
- 15:20Speaker 3: gracious message of the good news, the gospel. The God
- 15:24Speaker 3: who healed the sick and raised the dead, is able
- 15:27Speaker 3: to heal and give life to all who will call
- 15:29Speaker 3: upon his name. The Bible says, whoever calls upon the
- 15:33Speaker 3: name of the Lord will be saved. Lord, we call
- 15:37Speaker 3: upon your name and we trust you as our Lord
- 15:40Speaker 3: and Savior. May we follow you all the days of
- 15:44Speaker 3: our lives and may our hearts always be devoted to you.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Thank you for your restoration and healing in our lives
- 15:51Speaker 3: and the forgiveness of our sins. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year.
