- 0:01When we gaze into space at night, we see stars unimaginably
- 0:06distant from us. We also can experience, if we
- 0:11suspend our thinking, mind and vital desire, soul and physical
- 0:15demands temporarily, a sense of the timeless, the immutable,
- 0:21unchanging reality that exceeds our ability to embrace and
- 0:26comprehend. The rishis of the Rigveda
- 0:31referred to the ultimate reality as satyam ritam, brihat, the
- 0:36truth, the right, the vast. It is the sense of this vast
- 0:43reality that does not fit within our human conception of time,
- 0:47space, or causality, that is the divine, both in the impersonal
- 0:53sense and in a personal sense. As the ultimate being of the
- 0:58universe, who encompasses, creates, upholds, guides,
- 1:05directs and manifests all out of this vast, out of this timeless
- 1:13reality, we see a power of creation, a power that acts to
- 1:19differentiate all the forms and objects and beings and which
- 1:25drives them all forward. This is the becoming.
- 1:30And in the becoming we gain a sense of time, the timeless and
- 1:36time. We see here once again, the two
- 1:40standpoints and the different views that each of them holds of
- 1:44the nature of reality. The divine standpoint is
- 1:48timeless, immutable at rest, while it contains and manifests
- 1:55all that acts and moves under the impulsion of the Divine
- 1:59Shakti, the power of creation in the universal Becoming.
- 2:06From another view of the creation, we can see the Being
- 2:10as the Jivatman and the Becoming as the creatures that make up
- 2:14the activity in the world. And we can see the soul as the
- 2:19immutable, unchanging, timeless element that inhabits each being
- 2:23in the creation, and the psychic being as the element that
- 2:28matures and carries the essence of the experience into a more
- 2:33and more perfect representation of the timeless.
- 2:37In time, If we dip a cup into the ocean, it will quickly fill
- 2:44with ocean water. If we leave it suspended in the
- 2:48water, it will be full, although the actual ocean water may flow
- 2:53in and out. The water in the cup and the
- 2:57water in the ocean are one. The cup itself, the container,
- 3:04is a construct to make it seem like there is a separation
- 3:09difference, the illusion of many.
- 3:14There is no conflict between 1:00 and many, between being and
- 3:18becoming, between self and nature, between soul and psychic
- 3:22being. Rather, they are simply
- 3:25different ways of viewing and understanding the one reality.
- 3:30When we shift to a standpoint outside our small limited ego
- 3:34personality, we can get a sense of the timeless reality.
- 3:41Sri Robindo notes quote what is original and eternal forever in
- 3:46the Divine is the Being. What is developed in
- 3:50consciousness, conditions, forces, forms, etcetera by the
- 3:54Divine power is the becoming. The eternal Divine Is the being.
- 4:00The universe in time, and that is apparent in it, is a
- 4:05becoming. The eternal being in its
- 4:08superior nature, Para prakruti is at once one and many, but the
- 4:15eternal multiplicity of the divine when it stands behind the
- 4:19created existences, Sorva Bhutani appears as, or as we may
- 4:25say, becomes the Jiva para prakritir jiva Bhuta.
- 4:31In the psychic on the other hand, there are two aspects, the
- 4:35psychic existence or soul behind and in front the form of
- 4:41individuality it takes in its evolution in nature End Quote
