- 0:15Speaker 1: Murphy's Bleachers with my partner David Ross. I NA where
- 0:19Speaker 1: we talk about the unforgettable twenty sixteen World Series Championship
- 0:24Speaker 1: Chicago Cubs. We sit down with all of our former teammates, coaches, executives,
- 0:30Speaker 1: Tom Ricketts, theo Epstein, Joe matt and John Lester, you
- 0:33Speaker 1: name it. We're talking to him, we're interviewing him, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: we're telling you, guys stories, what we saw, where we lived,
- 0:39Speaker 1: things that you've all heard about, but now you're hearing
- 0:42Speaker 1: the real.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Stuff behind the scenes. Today it's about us. We're not
- 0:47Speaker 2: making this about us. It's twenty sixteen. We're gonna walking
- 0:50Speaker 2: through all the stories and all the episodes had a
- 0:53Speaker 2: lot of nakedness going on, but.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Dancing naked, lots of party and lots of king, lots
- 1:01Speaker 1: of teamwork, team camaraderie, all of it. So we've talked
- 1:05Speaker 1: to a lot of our guys already. It's the day
- 1:08Speaker 1: after opening Day. We're here at Murphy's Baseball seasons back
- 1:11Speaker 1: upon us. We can't be more excited for it.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I'm so pumped. Let's get the little things out of
- 1:16Speaker 2: the way first. What have you been doing since retirement?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Dude?
- 1:19Speaker 2: What's going on in your life? For what an epic
- 1:21Speaker 2: day you had when they brought you back here in Chicago,
- 1:25Speaker 2: Anthony Rizzo day.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, sitting in the bleachers Wrigley Field summertime. It was awesome.
- 1:31Speaker 1: The ball hit to me, the retirement party, all of it.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And it feels good to be back in Chicago. It
- 1:35Speaker 1: feels good to be in the Cub's ambassador, feels good
- 1:38Speaker 1: to be back in the game, doing games on Netflix,
- 1:41Speaker 1: games on NBC, You're doing games on ESPN. So to
- 1:45Speaker 1: be back in the game is awesome. But this is
- 1:47Speaker 1: our passion project, this is our baby, and it's been
- 1:51Speaker 1: so much fun sitting down with our guys. I want
- 1:53Speaker 1: to get into you and me meeting Rossie and I
- 1:56Speaker 1: met back when I was going through cancer. Actually, ROSSI
- 1:59Speaker 1: was playing in the Alcus with the Red Sox in
- 2:03Speaker 1: two thousand and eight and we had the same agency,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and Rossie left me a ticket. He came and said
- 2:07Speaker 1: hi to me before the game near the bullpen. Probably
- 2:09Speaker 1: had no idea who I was.
- 2:11Speaker 2: My agents are like, hey, can you leave this kid's
- 2:13Speaker 2: tickets just say hey, maybe snap a photo, and I'm like,
- 2:17Speaker 2: all right, went to some you know, charity kid. I'll
- 2:20Speaker 2: go say, he turns out were brothers are life turns out?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yeah? I was.
- 2:26Speaker 2: That was kind of crazy, the fact that went full
- 2:28Speaker 2: circle and we're sitting here now and we took a picture.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I think I signed something on the sidelines right there
- 2:37Speaker 2: in Tampa Bay.
- 2:38Speaker 1: It's funny. I remember driving to Tampa that that for
- 2:42Speaker 1: that game. We drove over that night and my mom's car,
- 2:44Speaker 1: she had a Cadillac, and I left the car running,
- 2:47Speaker 1: so we got back the whole game. The car was running.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I forgot to turn it off because I was so excited.
- 2:52Speaker 1: On empty we barely ruled. I think we had to
- 2:54Speaker 1: push it into the gas.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Well that that That's a good story, but not a
- 3:00Speaker 2: sign of things to come, because things got a lot
- 3:02Speaker 2: better for me.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Can you believe it's been ten years.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I can't believe it's been ten years. I can't believe
- 3:07Speaker 2: we met so long ago. You know, I my life
- 3:11Speaker 2: has been crazy since with you know, managing since then,
- 3:14Speaker 2: being out of baseball and two of the Stars. Yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 2: so I ever just got downe with the WBC and
- 3:21Speaker 2: that was when DeRosa introduced me. He was like, and
- 3:24Speaker 2: dance with the stars, and I gave him this and
- 3:26Speaker 2: the room went crazy. Little so that's my new Yeah,
- 3:28Speaker 2: I just did a little shimmy and the crowd went crazy.
- 3:30Speaker 2: So yeah, man, things have been nuts for me as well.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Ten years has gone by. I feel like it's happened
- 3:36Speaker 2: so fast. Our kids. We got to see everybody at
- 3:39Speaker 2: the reunion for Cubs convention. Everybody's kids have gotten older
- 3:42Speaker 2: and grown up, and everybody's kind of, you know, doing
- 3:45Speaker 2: different things in life. It's nuts how fast the ten
- 3:48Speaker 2: years has gone.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's really a husband. It's when we first met. When
- 3:52Speaker 1: Rossi and I really first actually met, we sat down
- 3:55Speaker 1: at ESPN at the end of the twenty fourteen season.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It was going into the playoff and we sat down
- 4:01Speaker 1: in an ESPN car wash and we just talked for
- 4:03Speaker 1: like two hours. Maybe we had the same agent. Our
- 4:06Speaker 1: agent was there, and I literally told my agent after that,
- 4:09Speaker 1: I was like, the Chicago Cubs need David Ross because
- 4:13Speaker 1: we were on the verge of becoming pretty good. I
- 4:15Speaker 1: thought we had a lot of bad teams, but everything
- 4:19Speaker 1: you talked about was everything that our team needed. So
- 4:24Speaker 1: for it to come full circle and you to sign
- 4:26Speaker 1: with the Cubs a few months later, it was insane.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I think like that was that was a moment.
- 4:31Speaker 2: We definitely hit it off and talking baseball and felt
- 4:35Speaker 2: like we were had been friends for fifteen years after
- 4:38Speaker 2: that day. I mean, we just hit it off so well,
- 4:41Speaker 2: and I think, you know, I was glad to be
- 4:43Speaker 2: a part of that. But I think what we needed
- 4:44Speaker 2: was Johnny lest we need Johnny, I follow the good
- 4:48Speaker 2: players around. If he had noticed looking back in my career,
- 4:50Speaker 2: just try to get on a couple of good teams
- 4:52Speaker 2: and hide. But no, that that day at ESPN and
- 4:56Speaker 2: then you came to Tallahassee for a football game, we
- 4:59Speaker 2: got to hang out out, and then me signing here
- 5:01Speaker 2: and us being able to go on this journey together,
- 5:05Speaker 2: and looking back, I can't wait for everybody to hear
- 5:08Speaker 2: our stories and the stories of our teammates are gonna
- 5:15Speaker 2: bring a lot of laughs, a lot of tears. We've
- 5:17Speaker 2: got some in the can already that they're pretty emotional,
- 5:20Speaker 2: and some guys really pour the hearts out. It's pretty
- 5:23Speaker 2: pretty pretty epic. Ross.
- 5:25Speaker 1: He was the king of two year deals, and he
- 5:27Speaker 1: would tell me and year one in twenty fifteen, he's like,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I'll just wait till the second year, Like I only
- 5:32Speaker 1: do two year deals for a reason. And it lived true.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Like by the year or two, I was like, I
- 5:36Speaker 1: want to fucking kill him.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I had the clubhouse cancer second. Yeah, yeah, everybody not
- 5:41Speaker 2: like that. But in the next year he's like, I'm
- 5:43Speaker 2: over his ship for sure.
- 5:44Speaker 1: When you came into Spring in twenty fifteen, you and
- 5:47Speaker 1: Lester came in and it was like all eyes were
- 5:49Speaker 1: on YouTube. You guys were intense. You were You're a
- 5:53Speaker 1: lot older than everyone else, so everyone was looking at
- 5:56Speaker 1: you guys like on eggshells a little bit, and you
- 5:59Speaker 1: were You have such a good way of uplifting everyone,
- 6:03Speaker 1: bringing them up and when there's times of you know
- 6:06Speaker 1: that they need to be talked to. You You are
- 6:07Speaker 1: the best in the business of absolutely motherfucking someone and
- 6:13Speaker 1: making them feel good about it and making them walk
- 6:15Speaker 1: away with a smile. And I don't know how you
- 6:18Speaker 1: did that.
- 6:18Speaker 2: But well, it's a shit sandwich, right you just you
- 6:21Speaker 2: start with a real positive thing, you say the shitty
- 6:23Speaker 2: stuff in the middle, and you're in with some positives. Yeah,
- 6:25Speaker 2: that's what I learned early on.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you walk away like he just screamed
- 6:28Speaker 1: at me. But I feel so good about it.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Well, I think looking back on the group we had,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and I appreciate that compliment. I think it's a compliment,
- 6:37Speaker 2: but we had the character of our group. I could
- 6:42Speaker 2: I could be honest and say whatever you had to
- 6:44Speaker 2: to our guys, and they took it. Whether it's Schwarber
- 6:47Speaker 2: and talking about catching and his body language, he tells
- 6:50Speaker 2: that story about coming off and coming up to me
- 6:53Speaker 2: and tell me what I got when we getting our
- 6:54Speaker 2: butts kicked, and you know, the little things about how
- 6:57Speaker 2: guys on our in our group were receptive to the
- 7:00Speaker 2: information or a little bit of criticism. But we also
- 7:04Speaker 2: pour you know, we poured into it to our teammates,
- 7:06Speaker 2: like we had such good guys, we all hung out,
- 7:08Speaker 2: but a young group like you were kind of the
- 7:11Speaker 2: veteran guy when I came here, you were the veteran guy.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Or you and Starling had been here for a long time,
- 7:15Speaker 2: but still very young in your career, at very young
- 7:17Speaker 2: in age, and then starting to bring in some championship
- 7:20Speaker 2: pieces that John had won. I had one had been
- 7:22Speaker 2: a part of that, and everybody just kind of like
- 7:24Speaker 2: really looked to us and really gravitated to you know,
- 7:29Speaker 2: we had a tight knit group and gravitated to each
- 7:31Speaker 2: other and we just took off.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I feel like him and Lester came in and they
- 7:35Speaker 1: literally taught us all. It elevated me personally to another
- 7:40Speaker 1: level of professionalism. It was all about winning. What it
- 7:42Speaker 1: took to win, the energy it takes to win, which
- 7:44Speaker 1: you don't know how to do until you do it. Like, no,
- 7:46Speaker 1: losing's easy in the big things. You just lose. You
- 7:50Speaker 1: lose games. You win a couple of games, you lose, Ah,
- 7:51Speaker 1: we lost again. When you win after you win a
- 7:54Speaker 1: lot and you lose, it sucks to lose, no doubt.
- 7:57Speaker 1: The energy it takes every day to bring.
- 8:00Speaker 2: So I look back and coming from Boston and winning
- 8:02Speaker 2: with Lester and Lackey on that team, I feel like
- 8:05Speaker 2: I owe them, you know, my rings because those guys
- 8:09Speaker 2: were professionals and had won before. But until you go
- 8:11Speaker 2: through the full journey and you finished the goal and
- 8:16Speaker 2: our champions at the end of it, then you look
- 8:18Speaker 2: back it's like, oh, that's what it feels like. That's
- 8:20Speaker 2: what it's like to bring our lunch paal every day,
- 8:22Speaker 2: come to work with a mission and just start stacking
- 8:26Speaker 2: days upon days good days. And then you get in
- 8:28Speaker 2: the postseason and you got to have a couple of
- 8:30Speaker 2: things go your way, but you got good talent. You
- 8:32Speaker 2: continue to focus on the little things. I think that's
- 8:34Speaker 2: something you learn when you're on the championship team.
- 8:36Speaker 1: For me in fifteen, and we talked about this a
- 8:39Speaker 1: lot throughout the podcast with a lot of different guys
- 8:42Speaker 1: and coaches. That San Francisco Giants series in twenty fifteen
- 8:47Speaker 1: in August here was like franchise changing in my opinion,
- 8:52Speaker 1: because we were really good. We were getting really good.
- 8:54Speaker 1: We had momentum and we were third place in the
- 8:57Speaker 1: wild Card at the time, and the Giants come out
- 9:00Speaker 1: for a four game set and we sweep them. We
- 9:01Speaker 1: boat race them the entire series. And after that series,
- 9:04Speaker 1: I think that was like the night we all went out.
- 9:06Speaker 1: We were singing at Stanley's karaoke meet Dexter, Big Kat
- 9:10Speaker 1: was there, THEO was out, like the whole team was out.
- 9:13Speaker 1: But that was like a defining moment for me because
- 9:17Speaker 1: we had lost so much and then we finally won
- 9:19Speaker 1: that like damn, we are good, Like we just beat
- 9:21Speaker 1: the San Francisco Giants World champions they've won two rings
- 9:24Speaker 1: already or three rings already, so and I know you
- 9:28Speaker 1: feel the same way, Love.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that was that was the I think talking to
- 9:31Speaker 2: each guy. It was in the second half and in
- 9:34Speaker 2: August in that series really stood out because of the
- 9:37Speaker 2: giants resume with Buster and Bumgardner. I mean, they had
- 9:41Speaker 2: they had the boys and I think they had two
- 9:43Speaker 2: championships at the time, and you know, we knew that
- 9:45Speaker 2: was a good test and being able to sweep them
- 9:47Speaker 2: and handedly, I think we all started to feel that
- 9:51Speaker 2: was when we started getting on our run. I think
- 9:52Speaker 2: the young guys were comfortable. Then. We had brought so
- 9:55Speaker 2: many guys up that year and just started those guys
- 9:58Speaker 2: started to kind of really get comfortable and and off
- 10:00Speaker 2: we went.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean yet two guys in the home Run Derby,
- 10:03Speaker 1: Me and KP. It's not about us, but it is today.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It is it is about you?
- 10:07Speaker 1: Is us today?
- 10:08Speaker 2: How was that?
- 10:08Speaker 1: Home run?
- 10:09Speaker 2: Dirt?
- 10:09Speaker 1: Home Run Derby was sick. It was so much fun
- 10:11Speaker 1: in Cincinnati too, all my family there, I mean the
- 10:14Speaker 1: night before we were out like to hanging out Sean Casey,
- 10:17Speaker 1: who was such a legend, And that's a story I
- 10:19Speaker 1: want to get We got a good case story is
- 10:21Speaker 1: we were in Pittsburgh in September and we're we win
- 10:25Speaker 1: ninety seven games that year. The Pirates win ninety eight
- 10:28Speaker 1: games the Cardinals I believe one one hundred, right. We
- 10:31Speaker 1: finished third in the division, second in the wildcard, and
- 10:34Speaker 1: we're trying to catch the Cardinals or I'm sorry, we're
- 10:37Speaker 1: trying to catch the Pirates be one in the wildcard standing.
- 10:40Speaker 1: So we're in Pittsburgh. We have a day game. It's
- 10:42Speaker 1: a Saturday going into Sunday. So Saturday night we're all
- 10:46Speaker 1: hanging in Johnny Lester's room. Sean Casey comes over. All
- 10:49Speaker 1: the boys are in the room. John has the penthouse.
- 10:52Speaker 1: He orders all the food, all these beers, and we're
- 10:54Speaker 1: just It ends up being till like four or five
- 10:57Speaker 1: in the morning. We have a twelve thirty game the
- 10:59Speaker 1: next day. So it was an it was a night.
- 11:02Speaker 1: It was a I remember taking a cab to the
- 11:04Speaker 1: park like panicked because I'm rolling in out like eleven
- 11:08Speaker 1: and on the on the radio, I hear the Pirates
- 11:12Speaker 1: people like dogging Angew McCutcheon for sitting out in the game,
- 11:15Speaker 1: because he's like, wow, could he sit out? We're in
- 11:17Speaker 1: the wild car Race, this and that, and I'm like,
- 11:19Speaker 1: hell yeah, I'm playing like I'm freaking a little bit
- 11:22Speaker 1: hung over.
- 11:23Speaker 2: It's okay, a lot of it. Some of your best
- 11:25Speaker 2: games were a little hung I mean, for honest, my
- 11:28Speaker 2: first about you, my first to bat, I ground into
- 11:33Speaker 2: a double play, basses loaded. Can I set the scene?
- 11:36Speaker 2: He's gonna gloss over this? So we first hitting. Charlie
- 11:40Speaker 2: Morton's on the mound, and Charlie Morton turns out to
- 11:42Speaker 2: be a really good picture love Charlie played with him
- 11:45Speaker 2: in Atlanta. But Charlie Morton wasn't that Charlie Morton you're
- 11:47Speaker 2: seeing now, Charlie.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Morton the back end of his career.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Yeah, back end of his career. He was really good.
- 11:51Speaker 2: So he was things out. Yeah yeah, And we got
- 11:56Speaker 2: bases loaded, nobody out, and our four hitter, who's one
- 12:01Speaker 2: of the best players in the game, comes up and
- 12:03Speaker 2: swings in the first pitch and grounds into a double play.
- 12:07Speaker 2: What we're grinding this guy, It's what we do. We
- 12:10Speaker 2: grind pitchers and might be a little I was there
- 12:14Speaker 2: so I know he's not feeling great.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And I drove in a run although I didn't get
- 12:18Speaker 1: the RBI because when you're gonna do a double play. So
- 12:21Speaker 1: I go back and, like I always do, I go
- 12:23Speaker 1: back to Rossie and I kind of break down my
- 12:25Speaker 1: bat him and Hinsky. I'll always break my bats down.
- 12:27Speaker 1: And he's fucking fuming. He's like, you want my opinion?
- 12:32Speaker 1: I was like yeah, He's like, you aren't fucking ready
- 12:34Speaker 1: to play. He goes, if you can't stay out all
- 12:36Speaker 1: night and you're not ready to play, don't stay out
- 12:38Speaker 1: all night. And I looked at him, I go, fuck you,
- 12:41Speaker 1: ROSSI I'm always ready to play. And I walked off
- 12:44Speaker 1: so pissed. First time I ever yelled at him. So
- 12:46Speaker 1: it's September fifteen, right where teammates now for six months
- 12:49Speaker 1: for the two year thing comes and play. But first
- 12:51Speaker 1: time I ever snapped back because I respected him, Because
- 12:55Speaker 1: you respect your own.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Hey, it's okay to bark back. I just you asked
- 12:58Speaker 2: my opinion. I was going to, hey, won't ready to play?
- 13:00Speaker 2: He let me ready to play?
- 13:02Speaker 1: Right, And my next to bat, I come back up.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I had a two run homer and I come in
- 13:08Speaker 1: the dugout right.
- 13:09Speaker 2: He hits the homer and it's gone and before the
- 13:11Speaker 2: ball is over the fence. He's staring at me, just
- 13:15Speaker 2: like staring a hole through me.
- 13:17Speaker 1: And I come back in the dugout and I'm like,
- 13:20Speaker 1: I'm always fucking ready to play, Rossie, fuck you screaming
- 13:24Speaker 1: at me, and he's like, if that's what it takes
- 13:26Speaker 1: to get you going, I'm gonna yell you all tight.
- 13:28Speaker 2: If you need me to pish you off to lock
- 13:30Speaker 2: at the fuck in, then I'll do that. As as
- 13:34Speaker 2: the pseudo bench player, I'll do that if you need
- 13:37Speaker 2: me to get under your crawl. And he was mad
- 13:39Speaker 2: at me for a good bit, but then he was
- 13:41Speaker 2: happy because he had a couple of RBI's.
- 13:42Speaker 1: And had a homer and double in that game too.
- 13:44Speaker 2: It was good we win the game.
- 13:45Speaker 1: We won the game, won the game. Another another one
- 13:48Speaker 1: too is later literally next the next week, I actually
- 13:51Speaker 1: went to Joe's Off's. I played I think one hundred
- 13:54Speaker 1: and sixty games that year, and were we had a
- 13:56Speaker 1: makeup game versus the Royals, and I walked in the
- 14:00Speaker 1: go Joe, I need a day. I'm dead because I
- 14:02Speaker 1: didn't know how to win, and there's so much energy
- 14:04Speaker 1: that goes into winning and your teammates and I was
- 14:07Speaker 1: gassed and he gave me a day off, and I
- 14:10Speaker 1: think I was I was late for the anthem, or
- 14:13Speaker 1: I didn't come out for the anthem, or I wasn't
- 14:15Speaker 1: out not for the anthem, I wasn't out for first pitch,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and he wore me out. And it's something I took
- 14:20Speaker 1: with me forever. He was like, we you have this
- 14:23Speaker 1: bench players grind every day for you, watching every at bat,
- 14:26Speaker 1: so invested in you, and you're not going to be
- 14:29Speaker 1: out there at first pitch to watch them and show
- 14:31Speaker 1: them the respect that you're not playing today. And I
- 14:33Speaker 1: took that with me and literally for the rest of
- 14:35Speaker 1: my career. Any day I had off, I was out
- 14:37Speaker 1: there for first pitch watching those guys.
- 14:39Speaker 2: And I don't know why these guys liked me, because
- 14:40Speaker 2: all I did was get on them about being being pro.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I did that to Mike Napoli. One of the hardest
- 14:45Speaker 2: things I've ever done, I caught and come to find
- 14:47Speaker 2: out later in Boston, I got a day game after
- 14:52Speaker 2: we had clinched and nap I didn't know at the time,
- 14:55Speaker 2: but had like a shot in his foot and all
- 14:56Speaker 2: these things going on. But you know, like you want
- 15:00Speaker 2: the boys around there to root you on and like
- 15:02Speaker 2: the third inning came around and nobody was on the
- 15:04Speaker 2: dugout and in the dugout, so I go up, like
- 15:07Speaker 2: I faked getting a red bull or something. I see
- 15:09Speaker 2: uh Lackeye and Nap, who played every day up there
- 15:14Speaker 2: chilling watching football, and I I was like.
- 15:17Speaker 1: His beer chickings.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, no, hey, too soon, too soon? No.
- 15:22Speaker 2: But and I said to Nap, I was like, bro,
- 15:24Speaker 2: I'm out there grinding every day, Like it just is
- 15:26Speaker 2: bullshit that you're not out there supporting me when I play.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I remember almost crying telling him that because it was
- 15:32Speaker 2: like so personal to me. And that's the best, you know,
- 15:35Speaker 2: and Nap tells that story all the time just because
- 15:37Speaker 2: of like you know, I think you lose side of
- 15:40Speaker 2: when your everyday player. These other guys that are out there.
- 15:42Speaker 2: So I just think like that's just one other piece
- 15:44Speaker 2: that keeps everybody together. And you know, I am a
- 15:47Speaker 2: role player, was a role player for most of my career.
- 15:49Speaker 2: So it's like one of those things you want to
- 15:51Speaker 2: you're out there with them on you want the boys
- 15:52Speaker 2: with you.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So that's another thing of leadership that people don't understand
- 15:56Speaker 1: if you're not out there guys that are playing like, oh, like, oh,
- 15:59Speaker 1: he's good to watch us. And it's like if you're
- 16:01Speaker 1: out there watching and investing, like your guys want to
- 16:04Speaker 1: play more for you, right. So you taught me that
- 16:07Speaker 1: and it's something that I took with me for the
- 16:09Speaker 1: rest of my career. In fifteen, we go to the NLCS,
- 16:14Speaker 1: We got our hearts broken. It was awful. I literally
- 16:17Speaker 1: thought we were winning the World Series. And I remember
- 16:20Speaker 1: after fifteen, I think we did a toast of Dan
- 16:22Speaker 1: Harron because it was the end of his career and
- 16:24Speaker 1: Lester another veteran moment here, John Lester poort champagne for
- 16:28Speaker 1: everyone at the end and toasts Dan Harrons for having
- 16:30Speaker 1: an amazing career. It was probably the end, and it's like, dude,
- 16:33Speaker 1: that doesn't happen, right, And like the parties we had
- 16:36Speaker 1: in fifteen after we clinched we beat the Cardinals, there's
- 16:41Speaker 1: a story with Schwarber that we talked about about the
- 16:43Speaker 1: home runs we hit the shore bomb. But those parties
- 16:47Speaker 1: that Lester had were just another example of bringing the
- 16:50Speaker 1: team together. For the iconic twenty sixteen team, It.
- 16:54Speaker 2: All led up to that, and we went into that
- 16:56Speaker 2: off season knowing like everybody's hungry. I always thought like
- 17:00Speaker 2: when you get to the World Series and win, there's
- 17:03Speaker 2: a sense of relief and like a relax, like when
- 17:05Speaker 2: you don't get there and your heart broken, like we
- 17:07Speaker 2: did against the Mets and they think, freaking Daniel Murphy.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Fucking I love him. Actually we ended up being teammates
- 17:14Speaker 1: and he's he were my number and I'm like, I
- 17:15Speaker 1: don't know if yeah, but on the Mets in fifteen heat.
- 17:19Speaker 2: But it gives you that sense of like you're hungry
- 17:22Speaker 2: going into next season. And then the great job by
- 17:26Speaker 2: THEO bring him back Dexter, What a moment that was.
- 17:29Speaker 2: We talk about that and how cool that was and
- 17:31Speaker 2: Dex walking us through his whole offseason and.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Then signed Lacky.
- 17:36Speaker 2: We signed Lackeys and yeah, yeah, so we I mean
- 17:40Speaker 2: that was a critical off season where they brought us
- 17:43Speaker 2: in everything we needed. Uh, And the whole Grandpa Rossie
- 17:46Speaker 2: retirement started, and we talked about kV starting with the
- 17:50Speaker 2: Grandpa Rossi Instagram and all the all the many episodes.
- 17:54Speaker 2: You can tell we're really at Murphy's.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Hear that iconic we are.
- 17:58Speaker 2: We are right here in the heart of Chicago Rigleyville,
- 18:01Speaker 2: and h We've got fire trucks going everywhere.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Many nights here in sixteen in spring training, we rolled
- 18:09Speaker 1: in and we had this very arrogant, hum but humble
- 18:14Speaker 1: mentality of like, we already won the World Series. That's
- 18:17Speaker 1: just press play, right, Like Lester had a shirts made,
- 18:19Speaker 1: and I know there was stories in Boston where you
- 18:21Speaker 1: guys had shirts made, but we literally spoke about us
- 18:25Speaker 1: already winning the World Series this year and we lived it,
- 18:27Speaker 1: we breathed it, and we were going into probably your
- 18:31Speaker 1: last year, right, yeah.
- 18:32Speaker 2: And the best and well that was I got caught
- 18:34Speaker 2: on a talk radio show saying I thought that was
- 18:38Speaker 2: it and then it just kind of caught fire, which
- 18:40Speaker 2: I didn't think it will backup Catcher who cares? But
- 18:43Speaker 2: I got a lot of love for that. And you
- 18:44Speaker 2: guys took care of your.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Me and KB me and KB well for us, it
- 18:49Speaker 1: was like, dude, you were so you're so instrumental in
- 18:52Speaker 1: my career and helping me become a better leader and
- 18:55Speaker 1: a better teammate, a better person. And it was like,
- 18:58Speaker 1: I want to celebrate you. And I know by the
- 19:01Speaker 1: end of the year two I probably wanted to kill you.
- 19:02Speaker 1: But it was just we make the Grand Parassi account
- 19:06Speaker 1: we're bringing them out all these gifts. But it was
- 19:09Speaker 1: just another way for our team to have fun. And
- 19:11Speaker 1: Joe did such a good job at us about the
- 19:14Speaker 1: players did too. Man, Yeah, we were like the Motley Cruz.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Well, Joe let us. He let us have those those
- 19:19Speaker 2: moments and the off the field stuff, and he championed
- 19:22Speaker 2: that and talking about embraced the target. I remember just like, yeah,
- 19:25Speaker 2: the target is on our back because we're picked to
- 19:27Speaker 2: win it, and how that was a good thing, you know.
- 19:30Speaker 2: And and I never felt really any pressure that whole
- 19:33Speaker 2: season because just the way he handled the media and
- 19:36Speaker 2: how close we were, and I felt like we kept our
- 19:38Speaker 2: clubhouse so tight knit and we're in our own little
- 19:43Speaker 2: world inside that clubhouse that none of that, none of
- 19:45Speaker 2: those cursed things ever really creaked in.
- 19:47Speaker 1: I didn't think it'll never never. And so in sixteen,
- 19:51Speaker 1: our last two games of the season were in Vegas.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I'm sorry off spring training. Yeah, we go to Vegas
- 19:56Speaker 1: for two exhibition games and the whole team goes because
- 19:58Speaker 1: after that we're going to Anaheim start the year. So
- 20:01Speaker 1: Rossie and I we played in Vegas every year for
- 20:04Speaker 1: the most part. In spring training. I went on every
- 20:06Speaker 1: one of those trips. So Rossie and I were sitting
- 20:08Speaker 1: at the Cosmo tollog I wonder why, and we shared
- 20:12Speaker 1: the penthouse. The two veteran penhouse are like, hey, let's
- 20:14Speaker 1: share a room, right, Like, we had a whole night planned.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I think we went to Hakissan right at the MGM
- 20:22Speaker 1: and we went out all night. We had a game
- 20:23Speaker 1: the next day, but it was we were gonna get
- 20:25Speaker 1: like two of bats. Joe.
- 20:26Speaker 2: We walk in and Riz this guy like, welcome to Chicago.
- 20:29Speaker 1: We followed it out. We had like the whole team there,
- 20:33Speaker 1: and it's just one of those things I remember. I
- 20:34Speaker 1: remember in twenty fifteen Spreenching, I saw the Royals, the
- 20:38Speaker 1: whole team party and they ended up winning the world.
- 20:40Speaker 1: He was like, dude, right, and then we kind of
- 20:43Speaker 1: bonded like that. So the next day we go in
- 20:46Speaker 1: and again it's not about me. I hit a home run,
- 20:49Speaker 1: my first to beat. Rossi is on the training table
- 20:52Speaker 1: with towels over his head, dead, and I remember Matt Caesar.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I think we told this story with sees. Matt Caesar
- 20:59Speaker 1: walks in, He's like, hey, are you good, bro, and
- 21:01Speaker 1: he's like, fuck away from me. I was dying.
- 21:04Speaker 2: And then Cashman Field in Vegas, like that hard table
- 21:07Speaker 2: what I just put? I remember Davey Martinez coming up
- 21:10Speaker 2: like tapping me, waking me up. He's like, hey, you
- 21:13Speaker 2: think you can catch three innings? I was like, I've
- 21:14Speaker 2: got three. I've got three. So I got like one
- 21:17Speaker 2: at back and got out of there. Was not feeling good,
- 21:19Speaker 2: I think, went back to g nap and then went
- 21:21Speaker 2: back down. The next night.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah, well we had a that was an epic. That
- 21:24Speaker 1: was well, some guys didn't want to go, and Joe
- 21:28Speaker 1: and Davey I'm not saying who up under my recommendation.
- 21:32Speaker 1: We had a Bloody Mary bar and a Mimosa bar
- 21:35Speaker 1: pregame for all of us because they knew we were
- 21:37Speaker 1: going out, and Joe was just we'll have mimosas and
- 21:39Speaker 1: Bloody's like, if guys need it for the hangover, it'll
- 21:41Speaker 1: be good going into the game. So it was just
- 21:44Speaker 1: those were the That was the vibe of our clubhouse.
- 21:47Speaker 1: It was so much fun. It was so relaxed, but
- 21:49Speaker 1: we knew when it was time to work. It was
- 21:51Speaker 1: and we rolled into Anaheim.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Remember the team Remember the team dinner A THEO and
- 21:56Speaker 2: or Tom the coach picked up the dinner that night.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Make sure everybody got out of the shore. Yeah, make
- 22:00Speaker 2: sure everybody left Vegas.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so they wanted us. We wanted to stay in
- 22:03Speaker 1: Vegas another night. They were like, no, let's get to California.
- 22:07Speaker 1: We ended up going to Mastros there and at Newport
- 22:10Speaker 1: and mister Ricketts and THEO picked up the bill and
- 22:13Speaker 1: guys were ordering, like any any team dinner less than Lackey.
- 22:16Speaker 1: We're always fighting over the bill. So it was obnoxious
- 22:19Speaker 1: the food and wine and the seafood towers that they
- 22:22Speaker 1: would order. But it was amazing. And then we get
- 22:24Speaker 1: into Anaheim and in sixteen, I think it was the
- 22:28Speaker 1: end of fifteen. I always worked out in the morning
- 22:30Speaker 1: in the on the road with our strength coach Tim Buss.
- 22:33Speaker 1: It was like our time to just go talk the game,
- 22:36Speaker 1: go to a regular gym and just be a normal person.
- 22:39Speaker 1: So before the second game, we went to the Equinox
- 22:44Speaker 1: out in Newport. Newport and you came and it was upstairs.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a blister.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, there was an outside area upstairs that we
- 22:52Speaker 1: were just training at and it was a beautiful day.
- 22:54Speaker 1: So him and I both took our shirts off at
- 22:56Speaker 1: Bussy too. We're the only ones there and we're training.
- 22:59Speaker 1: There's these monkey bars and let's try these. And I
- 23:01Speaker 1: do the monkey bars one time and I get two
- 23:04Speaker 1: blisters on each hand. Second game of the season, and
- 23:08Speaker 1: I am grinding trying to hit right, and I'm like, fuck.
- 23:14Speaker 1: But the point of this is you coming on the
- 23:17Speaker 1: road and coming to those workouts. It was a way
- 23:19Speaker 1: to celebrate and like we went to the Rocky Steps
- 23:22Speaker 1: that year in Philly, Forbes and Stanwix in Pittsburgh at
- 23:26Speaker 1: the Golden Gym was iconic. We would go there every
- 23:29Speaker 1: time we were in Pittsburgh.
- 23:30Speaker 2: San Diego Gas Lamp. We walked around and grab lunch.
- 23:33Speaker 2: We always grab the only thing Riz had to eat
- 23:36Speaker 2: at when we go to Pittsburgh. He had to eat
- 23:37Speaker 2: at Modes. It's like, bro, it's ten thirty in the
- 23:40Speaker 2: morning and he's got it.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He's there. What are mos? Every time in Pittsburgh. It
- 23:46Speaker 1: was great.
- 23:46Speaker 2: But I think that was that to me, you inviting
- 23:50Speaker 2: me on that and you getting up and doing that me,
- 23:53Speaker 2: you and Bussy, that bond, I thought took our relationship
- 23:56Speaker 2: to another level because it was so much fun for me.
- 23:59Speaker 2: It created a kind of a new routine for me
- 24:00Speaker 2: of getting up on the road, going and working out
- 24:03Speaker 2: when we first got there, going to have lunch, coming back,
- 24:05Speaker 2: taking a little nap, and then heading to the field.
- 24:07Speaker 2: And that's one of my favorite things. I look back
- 24:09Speaker 2: on those times. We bought the gold gym shirts with
- 24:12Speaker 2: the with the we all had these bright highlighter colors
- 24:16Speaker 2: tank tops. It was it was I mean.
- 24:18Speaker 1: We went I don't I don't think you were with this.
- 24:20Speaker 1: But there was a time where we went to the
- 24:21Speaker 1: muscle beach. Yeah, and I wasn't there for yeah, we
- 24:23Speaker 1: were outside working out. It was where Arnold worked out.
- 24:28Speaker 1: How cool was it for you when you hit your
- 24:31Speaker 1: hundredth home runs? Backup Catcher when he had his hundredth
- 24:34Speaker 1: home run, It was here Wrigley and like everyone exploded.
- 24:36Speaker 1: We are counting down for it.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Counting down.
- 24:38Speaker 1: It was just we rallied so hard behind you.
- 24:41Speaker 2: I have funny story the guy hit that if I
- 24:43Speaker 2: ended up pitching for me, and he walked into my
- 24:45Speaker 2: to my office in spring training. He was like, you
- 24:48Speaker 2: don't remember remember me? Dude.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I'm like, what remember what?
- 24:52Speaker 2: And he's like, you hit your hit your under the
- 24:54Speaker 2: home run of me. I was like, oh, back to
- 24:56Speaker 2: back change ups I do it was. It was a
- 24:59Speaker 2: funny little sto. Yeah. I remember, like looking in the dugout.
- 25:02Speaker 2: There's a couple of things I think about the Game
- 25:03Speaker 2: seven home run that we'll get to, but the look
- 25:06Speaker 2: on my teammate's face with the one hundred home run
- 25:09Speaker 2: and the Game seven home run, when you look in
- 25:10Speaker 2: the dugout A round it second and you guys were
- 25:12Speaker 2: going absolutely crazy for me, Like, those are those moments
- 25:16Speaker 2: you can't get back, and to see the joy of
- 25:18Speaker 2: the people you're grinding with every single day that love
- 25:21Speaker 2: you and are rooting for you, that that was a
- 25:23Speaker 2: special one for me. Here. You know, I got so
- 25:25Speaker 2: many standovations, little curtain calls that year, that.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Washout when Yati at the end here we're playing the
- 25:33Speaker 1: Cardinals as.
- 25:33Speaker 2: The last series of the Sunday Night Baseball.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Sunday Night Baseball, and Rossi's first at bat, Yachti gives
- 25:40Speaker 1: him his runway and gets a standing ovation. You do
- 25:43Speaker 1: a curtain call. But I thought that was so cool
- 25:45Speaker 1: that Yadi realized that moment, understood how much you meant
- 25:49Speaker 1: to our team and gave you that moment.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Every He's such a professional, and there's so I must
- 25:54Speaker 2: have thanked him a million times every time I see him.
- 25:56Speaker 2: But that was one of my favorite moments of my career.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Back on that that year and that game, you know,
- 26:04Speaker 2: I got I hit, I got another ovation. He gave
- 26:07Speaker 2: me two of them my second a bat, then I
- 26:08Speaker 2: hit the home run. We end up winning I think
- 26:10Speaker 2: two to one, and I gave us the lead. And
- 26:14Speaker 2: then Lester goes in and tells Joe the story he
- 26:17Speaker 2: talks about to take me out of the game. I
- 26:19Speaker 2: wanted to kill Joe when he was coming out. Thought
- 26:21Speaker 2: he was taking Lester out. And I go out and
- 26:23Speaker 2: then you put your arm around me. I'm about to
- 26:25Speaker 2: start crying now, and I'm like trying to give everybody hugs.
- 26:29Speaker 2: And I didn't know, I didn't even know what to do.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Like that was one of my favorite games at that year,
- 26:33Speaker 2: twenty sixteen. It was such a special moment. Everybody gave
- 26:36Speaker 2: me so much love. The fans gave me seven curtain calls,
- 26:39Speaker 2: and you know, it was just it was it was,
- 26:41Speaker 2: I mean, the people here, we're going to do some
- 26:43Speaker 2: stuff about the fans and like we're so thankful for
- 26:46Speaker 2: Cubs fans or I am, at least, and I know
- 26:48Speaker 2: you are but how you guys rallied around us, support us,
- 26:52Speaker 2: loved our personalities, and I got so much love walking
- 26:56Speaker 2: around this town, going to restaurants and playing Grandpa. You
- 27:00Speaker 2: still still get that's the only thing they know my
- 27:02Speaker 2: real name. I think it's just Grandpa.
- 27:03Speaker 1: I know that that team too, That team we in
- 27:06Speaker 1: twenty sixteen, we had seven All Stars that year. I
- 27:09Speaker 1: remember us rolling into San Diego and at the All
- 27:12Speaker 1: Star game it was, you know, the pitchers weren't pitching.
- 27:15Speaker 1: I don't think Lesser or Areat they were pitching, so that.
- 27:18Speaker 2: It was nine of you guys, right, it was nine
- 27:20Speaker 2: I think.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Seven, seven knows okay. But the clubhouse was dry in
- 27:25Speaker 1: lesser An area, like the fuck, so they like go
- 27:28Speaker 1: out and like buy all this stuff for the clubhouse,
- 27:30Speaker 1: and like we rolled in there like again, we didn't.
- 27:33Speaker 1: We never showed up teams. I didn't. I didn't feel
- 27:35Speaker 1: like we were ever arrogant. I felt like it was
- 27:38Speaker 1: really easy to root for us because it's been one
- 27:40Speaker 1: hundred and eight years. There is a real curse here, right,
- 27:43Speaker 1: Like there's so much that went into it. We went
- 27:45Speaker 1: so far in fifteen, so I really felt like in sixteen,
- 27:48Speaker 1: even at the All Star Game, but going into the playoffs,
- 27:51Speaker 1: like we were America's team.
- 27:52Speaker 2: We were dancing and I remember like they played whoop
- 27:54Speaker 2: there it is every time on the on the home run,
- 27:57Speaker 2: and like the whole dugout, that small tiny dugout was
- 28:00Speaker 2: high five and the dance, we all all the coaches
- 28:02Speaker 2: had their high five. Speaking of we had a little
- 28:05Speaker 2: handshake pre game.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Do you remember that we did.
- 28:07Speaker 2: We were that.
- 28:08Speaker 1: We had a little uh we called it the cock bump. Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 1: we had we had where I never wore a cup
- 28:14Speaker 1: in my career, but Rossi did, so it hurt me
- 28:15Speaker 1: a little bit more than him, but we would exchange.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Yeah, we had.
- 28:19Speaker 1: We had that.
- 28:20Speaker 2: We had to tell that with the that's a J
- 28:22Speaker 2: one We should say that for J and details that story.
- 28:25Speaker 1: We did that after homers. But our handshake was just
- 28:27Speaker 1: it was very professional.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah. He was always love like he was fun loving
- 28:31Speaker 2: getting into his routine and then the game. Right before
- 28:34Speaker 2: the game, he kind of like put on this' is
- 28:37Speaker 2: go time kind.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Of like I always said I was a switch guy,
- 28:41Speaker 1: So like he wasn't he when he was playing every
- 28:44Speaker 1: fifth day or a couple of times a week.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Yeah, probably you'd come in.
- 28:47Speaker 1: And he'd be like, in game mode, right, I'm playing
- 28:50Speaker 1: every day. I planned playing one sixty two. I think
- 28:52Speaker 1: of sixteen, I played one sixty or one sixty one.
- 28:55Speaker 1: So I always said I'm a switch guy, Like I'm
- 28:58Speaker 1: I keep my mind off as long as I could
- 29:00Speaker 1: until I have to turn the switch on and then
- 29:01Speaker 1: I'm go. And he couldn't understand that. So like when
- 29:05Speaker 1: I'm joking around thirty five minutes before the game, He's.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Like, get the fuck in, and I go russy, I'm
- 29:11Speaker 2: always locked in.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I'm always locked in.
- 29:13Speaker 2: But I would go to me be like, good luck today,
- 29:15Speaker 2: ann looking right now? Yeah, he just stayed for as
- 29:18Speaker 2: luck has nothing to do with it. Well, it has
- 29:20Speaker 2: nothing to do well.
- 29:21Speaker 1: In fifteen, at the end of the year, you came
- 29:25Speaker 1: up to me after I think I grounded out and
- 29:27Speaker 1: Joe took us out of the game as the last
- 29:29Speaker 1: game of the year and we already going to the
- 29:30Speaker 1: wild card. He took me out and I was pissed,
- 29:33Speaker 1: and you walked up to me, and I think I
- 29:35Speaker 1: was already annoyed at you from a Pittsburgh story a
- 29:38Speaker 1: week before. You wore me out for not being out
- 29:40Speaker 1: there for first pitch. So I'm like, this fucking guy's
- 29:43Speaker 1: it's it's September. A lot of your teammates are. You're
- 29:46Speaker 1: over him at that point. And you come up to
- 29:48Speaker 1: me after I ground it out and you go hey,
- 29:50Speaker 1: and I'm like, what the fuck you're gonna say to me?
- 29:52Speaker 1: And you just go you shake my ego, congratulations on
- 29:55Speaker 1: a great year. And I was I went from like
- 29:58Speaker 1: I wanted to kill you, like, oh, thank you. Gave
- 30:00Speaker 1: you a big hug. Remember that. So next year, that's
- 30:02Speaker 1: why we started the handshake.
- 30:03Speaker 2: I remember that. I remember that you were definitely ready
- 30:06Speaker 2: to kill me, but you were. It was it was done.
- 30:09Speaker 2: We we had a playoff spot locked in and yeah,
- 30:15Speaker 2: it's like I think we forget about telling guys like, man,
- 30:17Speaker 2: the journey's over. Now we start a new one. You
- 30:19Speaker 2: know that reason. Let's get let's get to let's get
- 30:22Speaker 2: to some some the playoffs, the playoffs, SA, we got
- 30:25Speaker 2: to get.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Go to that game one. San Francisco were the best team.
- 30:29Speaker 1: The Giants are coming off of their every other year
- 30:32Speaker 1: even year World Series runs. So they won in ten, twelve, fourteen.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Now at sixteen, and I'm in my head, I'm like, damn,
- 30:39Speaker 1: like I'm playing the Giants right like, we got to
- 30:42Speaker 1: go out West. I personally, my numbers at AT and
- 30:45Speaker 1: T at the time are the worst of my career.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I've zero home runs. I think I hit under two
- 30:49Speaker 1: hundred there. It's just I don't know why I never
- 30:52Speaker 1: hit well in that ballpark. But Game one, Hobby hits
- 30:55Speaker 1: that massive home run into the wind. Thought it was
- 30:58Speaker 1: going to go on to Waveland and it goes in
- 31:00Speaker 1: the basket basket and we went won nothing off Quato.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Who was Del? I think in the contention that year,
- 31:07Speaker 1: Del and we go I think it was game three
- 31:12Speaker 1: or four when we do this crazy backpick with me,
- 31:15Speaker 1: you Hobvey.
- 31:17Speaker 2: I wanted to bring that up. And I know we're
- 31:18Speaker 2: in the playoffs, but like you were, there's only so
- 31:21Speaker 2: many guys that got to play with that were like
- 31:24Speaker 2: locked in as much as I was to picking guys off,
- 31:27Speaker 2: and you were so into I remember the game we
- 31:29Speaker 2: ended in Washington when ron Dome was getting getting getting
- 31:32Speaker 2: a little squirrely. Remember and it was no it was
- 31:37Speaker 2: my first base Robinson or something.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and we did one here too, Yeah, yeah, we.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Had a couple of good ones and yeah for that
- 31:42Speaker 2: the one I remember Game three, Remember Arietta. We talked
- 31:47Speaker 2: about this a little bit, tacks Bumgardner Deep. We're up
- 31:49Speaker 2: like three nothing, and it was so loud and our
- 31:52Speaker 2: dugout was going crazy. And then I pulled the whole
- 31:55Speaker 2: veteran card and was like, in my mind, I'm like,
- 31:57Speaker 2: everybody thinks we just won the World Series. Everybody's going crazy,
- 32:00Speaker 2: like long way to go. I think we're in the
- 32:03Speaker 2: third inning and uh second or third inning, and sure
- 32:06Speaker 2: enough they came back and beat us. But I was
- 32:09Speaker 2: the old man, like, keep it together, people, we got
- 32:11Speaker 2: a long way to go. But that was a nut.
- 32:13Speaker 2: That was a crazy crazy, that.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Serious, was that serious intense five games too, the first game,
- 32:19Speaker 1: the first series two. We're nervous. We know our expectations
- 32:22Speaker 1: are up here, we're the best team in the league.
- 32:25Speaker 1: We have World Series or busts really all over us.
- 32:27Speaker 1: So but that backpick was just another, I think symbol
- 32:32Speaker 1: of our team of how loose Joe let us play
- 32:35Speaker 1: we're calling. So the backpick, I'll take you through it.
- 32:38Speaker 1: It's a bunt play where there's a guy in first,
- 32:40Speaker 1: the pitcher's up, or we know the guy's bunting.
- 32:43Speaker 2: You're the best the way business.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I come all the way up basically like ten feet
- 32:48Speaker 1: from the hitter. If he hits the ball at me,
- 32:50Speaker 1: I'm dead. I understand that. I just play the odds
- 32:52Speaker 1: of like there's no way he's going to hit it
- 32:53Speaker 1: at me, right, Thank god, I never got a hit
- 32:55Speaker 1: at me. But then Hobby comes around behind the first
- 33:00Speaker 1: runner after the pitch and ross he picks it off
- 33:02Speaker 1: and it's a ballsy player at the time. Yeah, but
- 33:05Speaker 1: we do it, and it's just momentum for us. But again,
- 33:08Speaker 1: like Joe, let us play that.
- 33:09Speaker 2: When you trust. Hobby was so good and he was
- 33:11Speaker 2: such his baseball IQ's some of the best I've ever
- 33:13Speaker 2: been around, Like he knew what he was doing, and
- 33:15Speaker 2: you trusted I could just let it go because his
- 33:17Speaker 2: hands were so good and he was going to block
- 33:19Speaker 2: it up, saying with you when you were back there
- 33:20Speaker 2: and just a regular backpick, you know, like if you
- 33:23Speaker 2: have trust in your teammates that they're going to sacrifice
- 33:25Speaker 2: and do all they can to either keep it in
- 33:27Speaker 2: front of it's a bad throw or be on time
- 33:29Speaker 2: to get there. Like that's the stuff we had within
- 33:32Speaker 2: this team. We had a lot of good trusts. Talking
- 33:35Speaker 2: about Game four, against the Giants.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean literally is just talking a hundred pence
- 33:40Speaker 1: about this. When we were out in San Francisco and
- 33:44Speaker 1: we were down three runs going into the ninth we
- 33:46Speaker 1: had Johnny Quato. They did Johnny Quato go in Game five. Yeah,
- 33:50Speaker 1: and he's nasty and he had had good success. He
- 33:53Speaker 1: had good success off us when he was in Cincinnati.
- 33:55Speaker 1: He had our number. And we came back in that
- 33:58Speaker 1: ninth inning and I fell like a did. Not only
- 34:01Speaker 1: did we party in San Francisco and on the play home,
- 34:04Speaker 1: but we ran out of there like thieves steal in
- 34:06Speaker 1: that game.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Everybody was getting I mean, balls were up the middle,
- 34:10Speaker 2: Contrere's hobby like things. Everything was going our way in
- 34:15Speaker 2: that inning and they were just Bruce Boach kept just
- 34:17Speaker 2: rolling guys out of the bullpen and didn't matter.
- 34:20Speaker 1: It was just like a sign of like when you
- 34:22Speaker 1: really look back at that World Series run, winning that game,
- 34:26Speaker 1: coming back down three in the ninth we were down
- 34:29Speaker 1: two to one versus the Dodgers. Right then we come
- 34:31Speaker 1: back and win in Game six. So we win three
- 34:34Speaker 1: games or four games two, Like we faced our adversity
- 34:38Speaker 1: in the playoffs, right, no doubt we had we were
- 34:40Speaker 1: down two to one. We get back to Wrigley, we
- 34:42Speaker 1: tie it. Then we have Kershaw.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Game six, when you remember the whole Retael with Caesar
- 34:47Speaker 2: using his bat and that whole thing, like like we've
- 34:50Speaker 2: got so many stories, but then our stories that these
- 34:53Speaker 2: other guys and and memories that they have of just
- 34:56Speaker 2: watching from different perspective, like it's been so fun fun
- 35:00Speaker 2: to do this and that that. That Dodger series, I mean,
- 35:02Speaker 2: they were good.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Forget, they're really good. I think, always good, you know
- 35:06Speaker 1: what I mean. And there was a game where Kenley
- 35:09Speaker 1: Jensen was pitching and I was using Matt Caesar's bat,
- 35:12Speaker 1: or I was using my bat and he jammed me.
- 35:17Speaker 1: My bat shattered, but he didn't cover first base and
- 35:20Speaker 1: I got a hit. We lost the game, but for me,
- 35:23Speaker 1: I was kind of grinding up until that point and
- 35:25Speaker 1: I walked in the clubhoufs. We lost, but in the
- 35:28Speaker 1: playoffs you have to be real quick, you know, you
- 35:30Speaker 1: gotta be like like a goldfish ted Lasso, right, like
- 35:33Speaker 1: memory of a goldfish. So after the game, I was
- 35:35Speaker 1: just like, that's that's it for me, Like that little
- 35:38Speaker 1: meaningless hit. I'm about to go off next game. I
- 35:40Speaker 1: think I got three or four hits, hit a home
- 35:42Speaker 1: run and then carried that into the post you roll
- 35:45Speaker 1: into the World Series Game six, one of my more
- 35:48Speaker 1: memorable home runs, hitting a home run off Clinton Kershaw.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Not about me, it is about you. That was the bomb.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Then we clinch at Wrigley, like the game was at
- 35:57Speaker 1: the front front. Yeah, from one hand, and it it's
- 36:00Speaker 1: like game clinching game at Wrigley to send us to
- 36:03Speaker 1: the World Series, and the party outside of Wrigley, like
- 36:07Speaker 1: the fans, the emotion it was like it was so insane.
- 36:13Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie. It actually annoyed me because I
- 36:16Speaker 1: was like, we still have a job to do, and
- 36:18Speaker 1: like Cubs fans were almost like just so happy we
- 36:22Speaker 1: got to the World Series, like that was good enough,
- 36:24Speaker 1: and on the inside we're like no, no, no, like
- 36:27Speaker 1: we need to finish the job.
- 36:28Speaker 2: I remember thinking like, I mean, we had an epic
- 36:30Speaker 2: party at Lester's after that, which was crazy. But I
- 36:35Speaker 2: remember thinking like I thought, I was so worried about
- 36:38Speaker 2: my last year and like wanted to go out, you know,
- 36:41Speaker 2: as best we could, and remember like taking a step
- 36:43Speaker 2: further than we went the year before and fifteen for
- 36:45Speaker 2: these people bringing a world series back here, like I
- 36:49Speaker 2: sense I had a sense of like, oh hit, now
- 36:52Speaker 2: we go like it doesn't you know a little bit,
- 36:54Speaker 2: like we've we've were back to where further than we
- 36:57Speaker 2: were last year. Like now it's all gravy, go win
- 37:00Speaker 2: this thing, you know, not me I was.
- 37:01Speaker 1: I was head down in the tunnel like we need
- 37:04Speaker 1: to win this. Like yeah, this was cool. The celebration,
- 37:07Speaker 1: it really but it's going to be better when we
- 37:10Speaker 1: went And obviously it was a lot better when we
- 37:12Speaker 1: want and all that, but I remember Game one here
- 37:16Speaker 1: is like we didn't really give them a lot to
- 37:19Speaker 1: cheer about. But the energy in the stadium of Game
- 37:22Speaker 1: one or I'm sorry, Game threeley was just off. It
- 37:26Speaker 1: was like everyone was nervous. I don't know if it
- 37:28Speaker 1: was the corporate money that was here, but everyone was
- 37:31Speaker 1: just like quiet. The energy I remember, like every guy said,
- 37:35Speaker 1: it is like what's going on here? Like usually we
- 37:38Speaker 1: had fans on our feet, like if it was a
- 37:40Speaker 1: two oh pitch and we were hitting, everyone get wild,
- 37:42Speaker 1: and that Game three was just I don't know, it
- 37:44Speaker 1: was nerve wracking.
- 37:46Speaker 2: We've got to get to an episode with fans for
- 37:48Speaker 2: this because I want to know thoughts and I think
- 37:50Speaker 2: we're going to try to get some some celebrities and
- 37:52Speaker 2: some guys that we know and get some fans perspective,
- 37:55Speaker 2: because there was that they want that fans roller coaster
- 37:58Speaker 2: of emotions. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we had our own, We
- 38:00Speaker 2: had our own stories. I want to know the fan
- 38:02Speaker 2: stories of like what they were thinking, what they were feeling,
- 38:05Speaker 2: what they were talking to about with their families.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Yeah. And then we roll into the World Series, right,
- 38:10Speaker 1: we split in Cleveland. It's iconic World Series. The Indians
- 38:15Speaker 1: are having won in what fifty something years, We're going
- 38:18Speaker 1: we're one hundred and eight years. Both fan bases were
- 38:20Speaker 1: so happy. It really was like I played the Guardians
- 38:24Speaker 1: with the Yankees and those fans were absolutely ruthless to us.
- 38:28Speaker 1: They hated us. But when we were in the World
- 38:30Speaker 1: Series and sixteen with the Cubs, it was just like
- 38:32Speaker 1: everyone you saw, everyone's just so happy, right like, no
- 38:36Speaker 1: matter what, the outcome was going to be good because
- 38:38Speaker 1: one fan base is going to break their their own drought.
- 38:43Speaker 1: What was cool winning Game five? Well, that's my favorite game.
- 38:47Speaker 1: We go well, we go down three to one, right,
- 38:50Speaker 1: and we had been down three oh last year of
- 38:54Speaker 1: the Mets, and it was like we almost deflated in fifteen,
- 38:58Speaker 1: and when we lost in sixteen and we went down
- 39:00Speaker 1: three one, I remember you saying, like, most of the
- 39:04Speaker 1: times we've won three games in a row. How many
- 39:06Speaker 1: times have we won three games in a row this year?
- 39:08Speaker 2: Well, I remember, I remember, I don't know who it was.
- 39:10Speaker 2: My back was turned after game four, putting my stuff
- 39:13Speaker 2: on my locker, and somebody threw their glove and their
- 39:16Speaker 2: lock like pissed off, and I was like, I couldn't
- 39:19Speaker 2: wait my next start after game one where I feel
- 39:21Speaker 2: like I went scouting report heavy rather than John Lester's strengths,
- 39:27Speaker 2: I couldn't wait to get to game five, maybe my
- 39:29Speaker 2: last game of my career ever playing because John's not
- 39:32Speaker 2: starting another game and it's here at Wrigley Field. I'm
- 39:35Speaker 2: going to retire afterwards, and I just want to feel
- 39:38Speaker 2: I want to take this field in a World Series
- 39:40Speaker 2: with Johnny Lester and the boys. And so whoever threw
- 39:44Speaker 2: their glove, I remember saying, no, no, no, like like anybody
- 39:47Speaker 2: give their left nut to be here tomorrow playing game
- 39:50Speaker 2: five in the World Series at Riggy Field. There's you know,
- 39:53Speaker 2: twenty eight other teams home sitting there on the couch
- 39:56Speaker 2: is gonna be watching us tomorrow. And I remember thinking
- 39:58Speaker 2: of that and then you say to VJ.
- 40:01Speaker 1: No to bussy, Bussy, and VJ I was like, no,
- 40:04Speaker 1: it's not how many times you get knocked down? How
- 40:06Speaker 1: many times you get back up? And I was like,
- 40:08Speaker 1: We're putting Rocky one and every single Rocky on them,
- 40:11Speaker 1: every single TV TV when we come in tomorrow, no
- 40:14Speaker 1: Baseball on the on the TVs. It's all Rocky like inspiration, right,
- 40:18Speaker 1: And like then we started doing the boxing and you
- 40:20Speaker 1: walked in that day and.
- 40:21Speaker 2: They put on dent and you come in doing all
- 40:25Speaker 2: this and and just kept screaming.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Like, it's not how many times you get knocked down,
- 40:29Speaker 1: it's how many times you get back up?
- 40:30Speaker 2: Adrian, Adrian and on top of the on top of
- 40:33Speaker 2: the couches and the U and the little bar we
- 40:35Speaker 2: had in the locker room. Like that was that was
- 40:38Speaker 2: an iconic moment because I think, like, just how loose
- 40:41Speaker 2: you know, your leadership looking back was so much about
- 40:46Speaker 2: taking the field every day and you're one of the
- 40:48Speaker 2: horses that had to produce, But your leadership was You're loose,
- 40:52Speaker 2: You're fun you always. I tell people this whole time
- 40:54Speaker 2: you always make sure everybody else is having a good time.
- 40:56Speaker 2: When we go out, you're making sure the group's having
- 40:58Speaker 2: fun and you're just enjoying and everybody else's enjoyment. Like
- 41:01Speaker 2: that's how you you're You're wired that way. And so
- 41:03Speaker 2: as a teammate, it's fun when you come in and
- 41:07Speaker 2: and you're kind of veteran guy that had been there
- 41:09Speaker 2: in Chicago and we know how hard you grind, but
- 41:13Speaker 2: you're loose. You're fine, Like, let's forget about everything else.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Let's go Rocky. You know, everybody knows Rocky. So that
- 41:19Speaker 2: was a big That was a big, big moment for me.
- 41:21Speaker 2: So we got to fast forward to game seven?
- 41:24Speaker 1: Can we we win Game five?
- 41:25Speaker 2: We win Game five?
- 41:27Speaker 1: Amazing for me actually looking back ten years that I
- 41:29Speaker 1: was literally just sitting at my house and I have
- 41:32Speaker 1: the Game five jersey framed and it's like World Series
- 41:35Speaker 1: Game five, the World Series patch, and I didn't understand.
- 41:38Speaker 1: I just clicked the significance that's the only World Series
- 41:42Speaker 1: game we won at Wrigley and what, well, look up
- 41:45Speaker 1: the numbers he started that game, you know what I mean?
- 41:47Speaker 1: But that game was such a grind and chatting and
- 41:50Speaker 1: grinding through that throwing I think two and a third innings.
- 41:54Speaker 2: I remember Eddie Better gave me a shout out during
- 41:56Speaker 2: the during the seventh thing stretch on that one. Yeah,
- 41:59Speaker 2: yeah talking, but it may retire, but it would always
- 42:02Speaker 2: be in our hearts and never forgotten.
- 42:04Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 42:04Speaker 2: It was unbelievable, Like a what a cool moment that was, Like,
- 42:07Speaker 2: there were so many That's my favorite game because I
- 42:10Speaker 2: remember I was so jacked up before that game and
- 42:13Speaker 2: Lester had Jason Alden song playing. I had my I mean,
- 42:17Speaker 2: I had told him one of those moments you're talking
- 42:19Speaker 2: about earlier, Like I'm walking in and we talked about this,
- 42:21Speaker 2: but I told him like we usually go over signs
- 42:23Speaker 2: and I was like, hey, I love you man. He's like, bro,
- 42:26Speaker 2: go do that right now. You know, he's like game
- 42:28Speaker 2: face all the time. He's like, bro, don't do that
- 42:30Speaker 2: right now. And so I was gut behind there and
- 42:33Speaker 2: I was streaming the top of my lungs to get
- 42:35Speaker 2: all my energy and singing a song, yeah, singing out
- 42:38Speaker 2: Dean song. But that was that was that was my favorite.
- 42:41Speaker 2: What a cool I mean, there's so many emotions going
- 42:43Speaker 2: into that one and we win.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Yeah, our mindset at least the mindset I was thrown
- 42:48Speaker 1: out there in that the universe was whatever we got
- 42:51Speaker 1: to do to wing game five. We knew we were
- 42:52Speaker 1: going to win Game six, like that was our mind.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Like well, boat Race Game six, which we ended up
- 42:56Speaker 1: doing winning game six, and then game sevens games, Well,
- 43:00Speaker 1: you helped just.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Boath race at that big home run and they're late
- 43:03Speaker 2: was huge, the whole World Series home run.
- 43:06Speaker 1: I'm sorry about it, yes, but we get to game
- 43:08Speaker 1: seven and we're pregame for the World Series. I did
- 43:14Speaker 1: not take batting practice once because when you get to
- 43:17Speaker 1: the World Series, you have you have so many different routines,
- 43:20Speaker 1: especially playing here in Chicago, you have to have a
- 43:22Speaker 1: few different routines with the day game, with different night games.
- 43:25Speaker 1: We usually have late travel. So KB and I didn't
- 43:29Speaker 1: take KB actually took VP only in game seven, and
- 43:32Speaker 1: he took it for like a round and he tells
- 43:33Speaker 1: the story about it and it's hilarious. But I didn't
- 43:35Speaker 1: go out there once because the media is just crazy.
- 43:38Speaker 1: It's so much people talking to you. It's not your
- 43:41Speaker 1: normal routine. So before game seven, I'm just chilling, like
- 43:45Speaker 1: playing playing Mario Kart. He got pissed off at us.
- 43:50Speaker 1: The game was until eight o'clock. I remember the night
- 43:53Speaker 1: before sleeping. I'm up at like four in the morning
- 43:55Speaker 1: just staring at the ceiling like, holy shit, I got
- 43:58Speaker 1: to sleep like I'm not going to four pm. Yeah.
- 44:01Speaker 2: I woke up that morning. My son Cole is sicker
- 44:05Speaker 2: and the heck and coming out of both ends, and
- 44:07Speaker 2: I'm like, what is going on? And he I guess
- 44:10Speaker 2: he was like five at the time. So I'm going
- 44:13Speaker 2: off to my last game my career, waking up early
- 44:15Speaker 2: like well, this is a good distraction in the morning,
- 44:17Speaker 2: trying to take care of him a little bit, and
- 44:18Speaker 2: then walk to the field. I walk in, It's like
- 44:21Speaker 2: all the boys are locked in on Mario Kart. I'm like,
- 44:23Speaker 2: what are we doing? Nobody, no Mary.
- 44:26Speaker 1: In Cleveland we played they had they had a like
- 44:28Speaker 1: an arcade game at Arcade Machine four player Mario Kart,
- 44:32Speaker 1: and we just I mean, that's got our competitive juices going.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, looking back, I worried about shit that I
- 44:37Speaker 2: shouldn't have worried about, for sure, and trying to keep
- 44:39Speaker 2: everybody locked in like you guys were already you know,
- 44:42Speaker 2: like you said, it was already written, and you guys
- 44:44Speaker 2: were were so good at that point, and like but
- 44:47Speaker 2: I remember and then Caesar and everybody's like, bro, you
- 44:50Speaker 2: all right your last game. Everyone's like, don't worry about me,
- 44:53Speaker 2: lock in, I don't care about me right now, let's
- 44:56Speaker 2: win this game.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Yeah, let's just win. Before the game we're playing Rocky.
- 45:01Speaker 1: This is probably fifty minutes, fifty five minutes before the game.
- 45:05Speaker 2: And we did this before game six, right five six.
- 45:07Speaker 1: And now this game seven. So this is my third
- 45:10Speaker 1: act of what I'm about to tell here. So before
- 45:14Speaker 1: the game we started playing Rocky, I stripped down to nothing.
- 45:18Speaker 1: I'm completely naked and I'm I'm up on the table
- 45:21Speaker 1: dancing like it's not I'm just giving the same Rocky
- 45:25Speaker 1: speech that everyone's tired of. Now, it's not how many
- 45:27Speaker 1: times you get knocked down, it's not how many times
- 45:30Speaker 1: you get up, Like we got this fuck, then we're
- 45:32Speaker 1: gonna win this. Like literally just putting myself out there,
- 45:35Speaker 1: making everyone try to be loose. I'm obviously as loose
- 45:38Speaker 1: as I can be. I'm completely naked and I'm dancing,
- 45:41Speaker 1: and hector On Doone comes and like sprays me with
- 45:45Speaker 1: like the shoe cleaner stuff and like ruined, like my
- 45:48Speaker 1: whole like hoorah thing that I had done for Game five.
- 45:51Speaker 1: In Game six and I was like, set me off.
- 45:55Speaker 1: I was so pissed, and I went poudy into the
- 45:58Speaker 1: into the showers, and then Ross he comes in and goes, hey,
- 46:02Speaker 1: it's not how many times getting knocked down you get
- 46:04Speaker 1: your ass back out there and you show the boys,
- 46:06Speaker 1: it's how many times you get up. So I ran
- 46:08Speaker 1: out of the shower, so you're right, get back up,
- 46:10Speaker 1: start dancing again, restarted the song, restart, restarted the song,
- 46:14Speaker 1: get back into the shower, and then I remember going
- 46:18Speaker 1: out to the field and the backstory to the dance
- 46:20Speaker 1: and naked was There'd be time to time throughout my
- 46:25Speaker 1: entire big league career that if I was in a
- 46:28Speaker 1: really bad rut or a slump, one of my coaches,
- 46:32Speaker 1: Jamie Quirk, suggested, when I was really young, hey, why
- 46:34Speaker 1: don't you just hit naked? So one day, I think
- 46:38Speaker 1: the first time I ever did it was in Cincinnati.
- 46:40Speaker 1: They just walk in there. I'm like, fuck it, And
- 46:42Speaker 1: then I just developed like maybe once or twice a year,
- 46:45Speaker 1: if I was in a rut, I would just close
- 46:48Speaker 1: the door. No one ever know it's coming, and I
- 46:50Speaker 1: just walked completely naked. The coaches would die laughing. They'd
- 46:53Speaker 1: be throwing me BP and I just hit for like
- 46:55Speaker 1: ten minutes, and I'd just be like, ah, I'm just
- 46:56Speaker 1: so sure enough every game. I would a good game,
- 47:01Speaker 1: every single game.
- 47:01Speaker 2: There may or may not be photos of this, and it's, uh,
- 47:05Speaker 2: it's a nice it's a nice little it pops up
- 47:08Speaker 2: on my feet every once in a while and puts
- 47:09Speaker 2: a smile on my face.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Feat your photo.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I might need to throw it in the contact photo,
- 47:14Speaker 2: but it's uh, it's uh, it's definitely was one of
- 47:17Speaker 2: those things again where he kept everybody loose and we
- 47:21Speaker 2: needed that, like that that three game speech, the Rocky,
- 47:25Speaker 2: all of us just shaking our head and like here
- 47:27Speaker 2: goes Riz again. Game seven and then you know, ron
- 47:30Speaker 2: Don tried to tried to put a little put a
- 47:33Speaker 2: little salt in your pancakes. Whatever. Yeah, and you came
- 47:37Speaker 2: back out and and and we did it.
- 47:39Speaker 1: But I remember after that, there's a long walk in
- 47:43Speaker 1: Cleveland to the to the batting cage, and I would
- 47:47Speaker 1: go to the batting cage in Hinsky, John Eric Hinsky
- 47:50Speaker 1: and John Mayer hitting coaches are in the batting cage
- 47:52Speaker 1: and it's like I'm the I'm usually the last one
- 47:54Speaker 1: to get down there. I do my whole routine and
- 47:57Speaker 1: there's maybe four words set. It was just like tunnel
- 48:00Speaker 1: vision walking down David Ortiz and the Fox crewers in
- 48:04Speaker 1: the hallway, like I just give them like the locked
- 48:06Speaker 1: in look, like give them hello, David Ortiz a legend
- 48:09Speaker 1: and I'm just maybe said four words to those guys.
- 48:13Speaker 1: And they were just playing music or no, I didn't
- 48:15Speaker 1: like to hit with music, and through to me, took
- 48:19Speaker 1: my two rounds and they just go, let's fucking go.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Walk onto the field for warm up, and they had
- 48:24Speaker 1: been playing Phil Collins Into the Night and like literally
- 48:28Speaker 1: there's fifty thousand people there and Phil Collins Into the
- 48:32Speaker 1: Night comes and I'm just doing my pregame stretches and
- 48:34Speaker 1: like the adrenaline, I'm getting goosebump talking about every time
- 48:37Speaker 1: I hear that song now it takes me back to
- 48:39Speaker 1: like this moment of stillness before game seven of just
- 48:43Speaker 1: like I took in the whole stadium and I heard
- 48:46Speaker 1: nothing except that song and it was like the coolest
- 48:49Speaker 1: moment for me before games.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Stuff. That's it. I got a chance to do that
- 48:52Speaker 2: on deck in Boston, and I tell people all the
- 48:55Speaker 2: time like that changed my thinking about prep sometimes, like
- 49:00Speaker 2: being able to step outside of kind of your skin
- 49:02Speaker 2: a little bit, or your your thoughts and your routine
- 49:05Speaker 2: and just taking that in, Like what a special moment
- 49:07Speaker 2: you got for yourself, Like you you never forget that moment.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Steven Drew hit a home run in game six that
- 49:14Speaker 2: put us up big. As soon as he hit, I
- 49:16Speaker 2: know he was gone. I was on deck and I
- 49:17Speaker 2: look to the crowd behind me in Boston, You're so
- 49:20Speaker 2: close there, and then I just I remember the hands
- 49:23Speaker 2: just going up in Unison and like it's slow motion.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, everything is slow motion.
- 49:27Speaker 2: And it's like I can't believe I took that in
- 49:30Speaker 2: and how that played out and the same the same
- 49:32Speaker 2: story for you. But what a crazy game, dude.
- 49:36Speaker 1: We go up early, right, yeah, we go early? In
- 49:39Speaker 1: game six we were winning big, well it felt big.
- 49:43Speaker 1: I think we had a five or six run lead,
- 49:44Speaker 1: and all the boys and the dog are like yeah
- 49:46Speaker 1: fuck yeah. And Rossi's pacing. The games are fucking over
- 49:50Speaker 1: games on over like beat red rightm Like Rossie, this
- 49:54Speaker 1: games I could finish this game like and obviously no
- 49:57Speaker 1: game is you're never count but just the way the
- 49:59Speaker 1: game was.
- 49:59Speaker 2: Going, Game seven was no reader or was it Raj?
- 50:03Speaker 1: So we're up right, and at whatever ending it was,
- 50:08Speaker 1: I came up to ROSSI and this is the glass
- 50:09Speaker 1: Case of Emotion story where it's I go to you, bro,
- 50:13Speaker 1: I'm so nervous right now, Like I'm a glass case
- 50:15Speaker 1: of emotion, right.
- 50:16Speaker 2: And I gave terrible advice yea, stellists the next But.
- 50:20Speaker 1: The reason I did that is because I knew how
- 50:23Speaker 1: stressed he was, and like, in that game, it's so intense,
- 50:27Speaker 1: and I go up almost I'm partly joking about it,
- 50:30Speaker 1: but also like, dude, like this is fucking nuts, right,
- 50:34Speaker 1: and they it gets aired and it's just became this
- 50:37Speaker 1: this point clip, it's gonna get worse and it's totally
- 50:42Speaker 1: gonna get worse. And then Raj hits the homer.
- 50:45Speaker 2: And I knew, like you just know, like sporting events
- 50:48Speaker 2: and the best of the best, and you know college
- 50:51Speaker 2: basketball is going on right now in the World Series
- 50:53Speaker 2: last year with the Dodgers and the Blue Jays, like
- 50:56Speaker 2: the back and forth, and you.
- 50:58Speaker 1: Just know, well, you you came in, you came in
- 51:01Speaker 1: in Game seven, him and Lester come out of the
- 51:03Speaker 1: hit the fans saying, and you'll get in the Travis Wood.
- 51:06Speaker 1: When Travis Wood tells the story of them in the bullpen,
- 51:08Speaker 1: it's literally like you're gonna hear this story, like this
- 51:11Speaker 1: is what was going on in the biggest game of
- 51:13Speaker 1: World Series history. So they come in. Lester spikes the ball,
- 51:17Speaker 1: concusses ROSSI like, ROSSI has no idea was two guys
- 51:21Speaker 1: score on it?
- 51:21Speaker 2: When I almost killed you matter the swinging bunt from Kittnus,
- 51:24Speaker 2: I just came in. He swinging bunt, and I turn
- 51:26Speaker 2: and spin throw launch it. You try to save me
- 51:29Speaker 2: and Kidness hits you. That's why they go second third.
- 51:31Speaker 1: I always said on those plays, I will always usually bail.
- 51:35Speaker 1: During the regular season, I always said to everyone, like
- 51:38Speaker 1: when it really mattered, I would let it out.
- 51:40Speaker 2: It matters.
- 51:41Speaker 1: And in Game seven, you literally Kidness is like a
- 51:43Speaker 1: freaking He's like a running by, he's like a full back,
- 51:46Speaker 1: and he crushed They crushed you.
- 51:48Speaker 2: They crushed you, And I'm like, oh God, just got
- 51:50Speaker 2: in this game. John is no strike, breaking ball still indoor.
- 51:55Speaker 2: So he shakes the breaking ball. I'm like, Okay, he's
- 51:57Speaker 2: gonna bounce it. Well, he took it literally is like
- 51:59Speaker 2: a forty foot and I go to blog. It hits
- 52:01Speaker 2: me in the mask. I go to stand up. Everybody's
- 52:03Speaker 2: like you, lily, you got knocked out. It's like I
- 52:05Speaker 2: rolled my ankle. The next day, I remember waking up
- 52:07Speaker 2: that why's my ankle hurt? And I watched the video
- 52:09Speaker 2: and that was why. But two runs come in and
- 52:11Speaker 2: I'm like, wait a minute, I'm I'm the defensive guy.
- 52:14Speaker 2: I'm not. I'm not supposed to let runs in this.
- 52:16Speaker 2: I just let the and the place went absolutely nuts.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Think of the momentum kind of switched to their their
- 52:22Speaker 2: their side. And I remember getting in after we got
- 52:24Speaker 2: out of the inning and John's like, what do you got.
- 52:27Speaker 2: I'm like, Bro, your ship's nasty. I should have blocked
- 52:29Speaker 2: that ball, like you're throwing the ball great. And then
- 52:32Speaker 2: I got to I got to get I had to
- 52:33Speaker 2: get on deck. I was I was second that inning,
- 52:35Speaker 2: and and I had to get loose and start trying
- 52:38Speaker 2: to focus on facing.
- 52:40Speaker 1: You come up facing Andrew Miller, Game seven, your last
- 52:44Speaker 1: of bat ever in the Big League. Game seven home run,
- 52:48Speaker 1: oldest player in Major League Baseball history. Thank you, thank
- 52:50Speaker 1: you lord. It was bro I mean, like, what ending
- 52:54Speaker 1: well we had. I remember thinking, you're in the league
- 52:57Speaker 1: because you're catching. Yeah yeah, and your leadership career twenty
- 53:00Speaker 1: hitter you let two runs in catching, and then on
- 53:03Speaker 1: the offensive side you hit a home run. It was
- 53:06Speaker 1: completely the scribble of slipped it totally.
- 53:08Speaker 2: Well, what I used to tell you when you were struggling?
- 53:10Speaker 2: Do you remember?
- 53:11Speaker 1: I remember I was struggling one time and I look
- 53:12Speaker 1: at Rossi and I'm complaining about my swing. He looks
- 53:14Speaker 1: at me, he goes, bro, don't ask me. I fuck,
- 53:16Speaker 1: you had two twenty my whole career.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Imagine going to work every day with my swings. Well
- 53:20Speaker 2: he is to tell him, like, you got a good one. No.
- 53:23Speaker 2: I remember, like, you know, doing some homework and watching
- 53:26Speaker 2: I didn't watch a lot of video, but I remember
- 53:27Speaker 2: the World Series, like, if I'm on facing by, he's
- 53:29Speaker 2: probably gonna be a lefty. I had good numbers off
- 53:32Speaker 2: Andrew Miller when Andrew Miller was in Florida and he
- 53:34Speaker 2: was going ninety one, not when he I called him
- 53:37Speaker 2: in Boston. We were on a championship team together ninety
- 53:39Speaker 2: six with freaking that nasty slider. So just remember watching
- 53:44Speaker 2: some video and him shaking to heater. Uh, and he
- 53:47Speaker 2: did that within my bat and before that last pitch,
- 53:50Speaker 2: I knew he had had me one two and I
- 53:54Speaker 2: was just trying to put good swing on it. And
- 53:55Speaker 2: sure enough, Raj, Raj goes back like this and I'm like,
- 53:58Speaker 2: if this dude catches this, I'm gonna kill myself. And
- 54:02Speaker 2: it went out, and thank god, I was just like,
- 54:04Speaker 2: you know, not even know You're.
- 54:06Speaker 1: So in the dungout too. We're so hyped, and the
- 54:08Speaker 1: momentum comes back to us.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Well the picture I've got too of all you guys.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Just like, it's just we've met. Everyone cared so much
- 54:16Speaker 1: about our teammates in sixteen, and that's really another reason
- 54:19Speaker 1: that this team was so special. We're on defense. Raj
- 54:23Speaker 1: comes up. Chapman's in the game. Chapman has been our
- 54:26Speaker 1: literally our workhorse all playoffs. Joe went to him early
- 54:31Speaker 1: and often, and Joe left him in Game six. And
- 54:33Speaker 1: we talk about Joe's decision in Game six to leave
- 54:36Speaker 1: him in, and we break that down with Joe and
- 54:38Speaker 1: you'll hear that on one of the earlier episodes. But
- 54:42Speaker 1: Raja comes up, you're calling all fastballs and he was. However,
- 54:51Speaker 1: he hits this home run and it's like off the bat,
- 54:54Speaker 1: I'm like no, no, like get down the high wall
- 54:57Speaker 1: in Cleveland and it goes right the camera. Well, it's
- 55:00Speaker 1: like the most iconic, Like that's such an iconic home run.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Like I still think of that home run. I get
- 55:05Speaker 1: the bigb GBI's and we won when I still see
- 55:08Speaker 1: RaSE to this day and I hate them but I
- 55:10Speaker 1: love them, but it's like, we won, and I'm like, no,
- 55:14Speaker 1: he is.
- 55:14Speaker 2: What he was working for the MLBPA and he'd walk
- 55:17Speaker 2: into my office when I was managing. I'm like, bro,
- 55:18Speaker 2: you gotta get out. Like my stomach starting to hurt,
- 55:20Speaker 2: like it just I still go back to that moment,
- 55:22Speaker 2: and I you know, we turned the page pretty fast
- 55:25Speaker 2: as big leaguers. I remember being behind the plate just
- 55:28Speaker 2: not being able to get myself to stop thinking about
- 55:30Speaker 2: what just happened.
- 55:31Speaker 1: You know, like I one hundred and eight years, we're
- 55:35Speaker 1: the best team. We won one hundred plus games. We're
- 55:38Speaker 1: in Game seven of the World Series. We're down three one,
- 55:40Speaker 1: we come back, we're up in the game. Everything that
- 55:42Speaker 1: goes into it, and Raj Davey sits that home run.
- 55:45Speaker 1: I'm sitting there literally another moment where everything went deaf,
- 55:49Speaker 1: like I heard nothing. I couldn't hear myself breathing, and
- 55:53Speaker 1: I'm just swiping dirt, like looking down, like trying to
- 55:55Speaker 1: like not show.
- 55:57Speaker 2: Like, oh my, what's going world just came to and
- 56:00Speaker 2: in my.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Head, I'm just like, dude, like this curse is fucking real.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Like there's a bunch of guys that talk about that.
- 56:05Speaker 1: Holy shit, like there's no way that just happened, right,
- 56:09Speaker 1: And he ties the game, and then it's like Chapman
- 56:12Speaker 1: goes out in the ninth and I can't wait to
- 56:15Speaker 1: sit down and Chatman and talk to him. The fact
- 56:17Speaker 1: that ear all this, Chiman went back and in the
- 56:18Speaker 1: ninth inning and got us through the ninth inning in
- 56:20Speaker 1: a tie ball game is like the unsung hero all
- 56:23Speaker 1: of this, because there's so many times, if you're a
- 56:25Speaker 1: baseball fan, you watch the closer give it up in
- 56:28Speaker 1: the eighth, like the game's over. In the ninth, yeah,
- 56:30Speaker 1: and then it got a miracle.
- 56:34Speaker 2: I remember Miggi throwing a ton of sliders all of
- 56:36Speaker 2: a sudden, coming in and throwing just all sliders those
- 56:38Speaker 2: guys and getting him through. Miggie is another unsung hero,
- 56:41Speaker 2: getting that that last RBI for us that we ended
- 56:44Speaker 2: up eventually meeting. Yeah, I mean big hit, like uh, chappie, Well,
- 56:47Speaker 2: we got to get to you know, before we skip ahead,
- 56:50Speaker 2: like the range.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Of seventeen minutes of literally the tears in heaven, tears
- 56:54Speaker 1: of joy, I think, Dexter said of all the Cubs fans, right,
- 56:59Speaker 1: and Joe West was the umpire, the chief of that crew,
- 57:04Speaker 1: and he called the delay. Until this day, whenever I
- 57:07Speaker 1: saw Joe Wes, I was like, Joe, you call the
- 57:09Speaker 1: greatest delay in baseball history. Thank you. He would just laughing.
- 57:13Speaker 1: I love Joe West that. But we we come down
- 57:15Speaker 1: and we're just like, dude, our dugout in the ninth
- 57:19Speaker 1: inning was like ghosts, like you look over to like
- 57:22Speaker 1: THEO two. He was right down and everyone's a ghost
- 57:24Speaker 1: and it's just like we get through the ninth and
- 57:27Speaker 1: then when the rain delay happens. And then during that
- 57:29Speaker 1: reign that I remember, I re upped on my pregame
- 57:33Speaker 1: concoction that talk about in the Dexter series, but Dexter
- 57:38Speaker 1: and I are pregame concoction was a shot of wood
- 57:40Speaker 1: for reserve and a five hour energy presented by Bill Murray.
- 57:44Speaker 1: So Bill Murray. I think Game six of the NLCS
- 57:47Speaker 1: came in. He's in a fishing vest right and we're
- 57:51Speaker 1: just talking. It's Bill Murray and Vince Vaughn in our clubhouse. Yeah,
- 57:54Speaker 1: just like this is like.
- 57:55Speaker 2: Rule number three hundred and seventy five met whatever.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Like, so Bill Murray, me and Dexter talking to him.
- 58:01Speaker 1: He's like, hey, take this. It's a Woodford reserve and
- 58:03Speaker 1: a fire energy saying I called a speedball, and I'm like,
- 58:05Speaker 1: all right, let's do it. Dex Like we've we've done
- 58:07Speaker 1: shots before the game before, It's like, let's do it.
- 58:09Speaker 1: And then we just did it every game of the
- 58:11Speaker 1: World Series. So we get to the rain delay, me
- 58:14Speaker 1: and Dexter re up on our pregame stuff because we're
- 58:17Speaker 1: about to go into extras. We're in the weight room,
- 58:20Speaker 1: just like, there's no fucking way we're losing this, you know.
- 58:22Speaker 1: I was talking to Dexter. Bussy guy started gravitating in
- 58:25Speaker 1: and then Jay Hey pulls everyone in and it was
- 58:28Speaker 1: like that moment for us is it's a legendary moment
- 58:33Speaker 1: because Jay Hay and a few of other of us
- 58:36Speaker 1: brought us all together and was like, we're not fucking
- 58:39Speaker 1: losing like when whichever who we are.
- 58:42Speaker 2: When Jay Hay speaks to the fact that he came
- 58:44Speaker 2: up to me, was like, hey, team meeting in the
- 58:46Speaker 2: in the weight room, and I just remember, like wow,
- 58:49Speaker 2: like he's got something to say.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 58:51Speaker 2: He was not a guy that was like vocal, but
- 58:53Speaker 2: when he spoke, uh, it kind of carried some volume.
- 58:55Speaker 2: I remember walking in and everybody's in there and I
- 58:57Speaker 2: had to go get Chappie off the walk back out,
- 59:00Speaker 2: like everybody's like, where's roll this. I walked back out
- 59:03Speaker 2: to the dugout. He's got his hands in his face,
- 59:06Speaker 2: just crying ball and crying on the bench so like,
- 59:09Speaker 2: and he walks in. Everybody talks about remembering that and
- 59:11Speaker 2: like he wouldn't like yeah, we wouldn't be about you, bro,
- 59:14Speaker 2: like you know, and and then we we closed and
- 59:18Speaker 2: guys start start talking and I remember coming out of
- 59:21Speaker 2: that and we talked about this. Shore talks about his
- 59:24Speaker 2: kind of journey in his rehab back and then coming
- 59:26Speaker 2: out of that meeting, he was leading off against Shaw
- 59:29Speaker 2: And remember right before that, he walks up to me
- 59:31Speaker 2: and looks me in the eyes. Guy's batting gloves on, he's
- 59:34Speaker 2: tightening him up. I'm out of the game and he
- 59:35Speaker 2: looks at me. He goes, this guy throws me a
- 59:37Speaker 2: cutter in I'm gonna knock the fuck out of it.
- 59:40Speaker 2: But he hit the ball, didn't get Yeah, he was
- 59:44Speaker 2: like if he would have been in the air, had
- 59:46Speaker 2: been a bomb, but he hit it about this far.
- 59:49Speaker 2: It fell from Jason Kidness and who was playing short
- 59:51Speaker 2: right field. Uh, and it got by and that's how
- 59:53Speaker 2: hard it was hit. But uh, yeah, I remember that
- 59:56Speaker 2: that speech was so that that kind of moment reset us.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Everybody talking about out how we're the best team in
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: baseball all year are win totals, and just how we
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: played for me and.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Two our bullpen was set up and theirs wasn't. They
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: blew all their guys, So we knew we were in
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: a from a pitching standpoint, we were in a better
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: position too. So I remember talking about that and then
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: going out on the field, it was like everyone got
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: their color back. It was like we were able to
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: take those seventeen minutes and like regroup because that Raj
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Homer was like just the most gunt wrenching thing. And
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: what's so cool on this podcast is every guy tells
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: their version of the of the rain delay. And it's
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: so cool hearing their stories and through their lenses. And
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: I remember going back to Cleveland every year. Every time
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: we went back to Cleveland, I literally looked in the
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: weight room and I wherever what every team goes on
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: he goes That's exactly where I was sitting. I was
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: sitting right there, right by the door with Jackie. I
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: was sitting right on the treadmill.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: What do you so Schwarver leeds a pintron al Mora
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: KB deep fly ball, thought it was gone? Wasn't rate
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: tag up by al Mora car Newgaggin History of the game.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: I think so? And you get walked? What was going
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: through your mind? You're going to the plate? Did you
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: feel like you were gonna be were gonna walk yet?
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: There's there was a lot going through my mind because
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: that's the cat and mouse game of the game. There's
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: a base open, and this is all of my advice
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: that I've got in my career is coming to the
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: biggest moment. And then it ended up potentially walking me.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: But walking to the plate, in my head, I'm like,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: all right, there, he's gonna pitch around me. He might
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: try to steal a pitch pitch one, so I'm gonna
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: be really aggressive pitch one, but he might totally pitch
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: around me. So all these things are going through my
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: head of like, don't try to do too much. And
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: then I get up there, I'm like dialed in. And
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: then I see Tito put the four out, and I'm like,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: fuck right, because like you were in that moment, you want.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: To you want to swing in the back, and you
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: were swinging the back as good as anybody in that moment.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and they walked me and I'm all right, like
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: now it's on those oversts.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: So and then he hits that and the iconic picture
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: where Riz has got his eyes and your hands.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: It's just the adrenaline of that, the meaning of that,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Like I was here when we sucked, right, Like we
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: lost one hundred games my first year, we lost ninety
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: eight my second year, like otis rest in peace. Our
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: clubhouse attendant the first year I got here was pushing
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: balls in a shopping cart for batting practice. Like that's
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: how far the organization was behind. So in that moment
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: when Zobers hit that that ball and we scored, I
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: was like, holy shit, Like we just won the World Series.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Like we just won the World Series, right, and then
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Miggy with the Insurance run just adds on. But like
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: in that moment when sobers hit that I knew, like
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: I just had that belief we were gonna win again, right,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: and everything was coming full circle. It was like, we're
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: literally now three outs away from being World Series champions,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: breaking one hundred and eight year cursed. We know how
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: much Cups fans this means to what the city of chicague.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: We've seen the city of Chicago partying for the last
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: two years because the fifteen run and now sixteen. So
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: that iconic moment of me in my head all that
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: was running through.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: The crazy I at such a good visual, like when
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: I watch it back and like your genuine surprise and like,
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: holy shit, we're about to win the World Series. This
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: is all over your face and we do I didn't.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: I didn't have on my being Goo card. Mike Montgomery
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: closing it out, no, and he told us a great story.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Story Mike talks about is his pitches is like it's
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: such a full circle podcast because so many guys talk
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: about their their personal journeys to that Game seven and
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: him coming in and Michael Martinez is hitting in the
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: grounder to KB and that was That was Michael Martinez's
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: first at bat of the series. I thought it was
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: a lot faster, and I thought I didn't read the
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: ball good because I had to bust over to first
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: and before that inning, I like loaded my glove up
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: with pin tar like I'm like, I am not fucking
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: missing this ball. Like if a ball comes to me,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: it's it's time card. And KB gets it and I'm like,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: oh shit, if he throws this over my head, there's
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: a guy in second, like I need to catch this ball,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: and he sails it. At first, I'm like caught thousands
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: of balls.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: KB.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: I'm like, oh no. And I ended up catching it
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: and it was like the perfect It.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Wasn't as high as you felt, It wasn't as high
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: it was about to go.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Yeah, his ball just went and I caught it and
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: like right away my first reaction, and I get emotional
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: telling the stories. When I was a kid, me and
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: my dad would always play catch in the house and
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: we can do like lightning around. He'd hit me golf
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: balls that at the end if I won, I we'd
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: always raise our hands and do like Champion of the
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: world and like we would just scream of the world
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: and like KB threw it high and my other hand
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: goes up and I'm literally just like a champion of
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: the world. And then you and I had talked about
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: getting all the baseballs and just like immediately I've watched
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Pro twenty World Series that I remember of the last
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: out in all the reactions, and like I always say
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: what I would do, and like in that moment, it was.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Like that's history. That's history. That was that was like
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: so I could barely get over the railing. I was
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: trying to get out there so fast. I remember my
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: spike getting caught in and then we go whether.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: It was like this ending grandpa moment.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Serious question I'm gonna ask Jay two that I really
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: have never heard the answer to. I'm doing an interview,
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: we're all celebrating. I get pulled over with Ken Rosenthal
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: doing an interview and you guys come and pick me
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: up and put me on your should Like I don't
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: want to get emotion. That's crazy, Like who's that? Who's that? Always?
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Always I've been too many bows to the head, But like, seriously,
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: like to have that moment in looking back and for
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: me it's like, holy shit, like these guys like I
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: I nobody deserves that. Like it was like Rudy, Rudy,
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: what what? Like what how did that all transpire? I've
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: never heard this story you Just.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Through my personal career, I've had so many people in
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: my life that helped me get to where I am
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: literally today ten years later. But up to that point,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I had so many good veterans and like, you were
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: just so life changing for me. And another guy comes
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: out the top of his Eric Hinski with hitting and we
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: talk about this how he helped me become the hitter
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I was. But you shaped perspective for me. You shaped
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: how to handle all phases of the game, the bullpen, pitching,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: like situations, talking like a manager and just what you meant,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: and like going out the emotions of you going out
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: hitting your hundred with Homer hitting a game seven home run,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: like the glass case of emotion coming to you because
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: you're like my big brother. Like I remember there's a
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: time his son Cole was running out to his dad
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: in left field before a game at Wrigley and he's
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: like dad, and I go, no, he's my dad, And
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: I go Dad, And like me and Cole are sprinting
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: to you and like all that and I know how
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: much ja hey man. When Jay signed here in sixteen,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Jay hay in his I don't think in his contract,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: but told vj our traveling secretary, Hey, every single road
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: trip we go on, Rossie gets a sweet so his
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: mentors and Jay was in Atlanta.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: In Atlanta when he was coming.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Up, that's how much you meant to us. And it
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: was like we knew that was your last game and
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: like to carry you off the field. It was just
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: like a celebration of the boys and for you, and
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: like how cool was that?
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Bro?
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: That picture?
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: That picture well, and it's like you see the look
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: on you guys's face, like you're smiling so big skis
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: behind you, Like I can't believe it that's happening. I'm
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: up there. I don't know. I like what to do
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: with my hands. I remember like putting up a number
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: one and then I'm like blowing kisses. For some reason,
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: I'm like what am I doing up here? Like it
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: was so yeah, like.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: What is this?
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: But what a special moment for me? I like I
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: put up the end in my career versus anybody that
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: played the game, not because of the stats, but because
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: of how you guys treated me. So that was the
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: I was really really special. And then we go we
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: go celebrate. We got a parade.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: The celebration was I mean the plane ride back to
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: there's pictures and I just put it up on our
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: level reunion. The pictures we put up of us on
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: the plane with the World Series trophy and like our
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: families are all together. Our families too, Like I remember
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: in the World Series, especially in Cleveland, after every game,
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: we had a hospitality room with all food and everyone
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: would just go and decompress after the game. And our
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: families were so invested and they flew back with us.
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: We have to take pictures of my parents with the trophy,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: my wife with the trophy. It was just like such
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: an amazing thing. And we get off. We get back
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: to like five oh six.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: My daughter Landry tells a story all the time Cole
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: was six, we gave him his own row and just
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: laid him down, and my wife at the time was
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: sitting down with him, and I was kind of bouncing
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: back and forth, checking in going with the boys. Well,
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: my seven year old daughter was in the back partying
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: with the Leicester family. And the Lackey family. She kept
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: coming up with one hundred dollars bills and I'm like,
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: where are you getting these hundreds? She's like, Dad, the
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: guys are giving them to me. I'm like, go tell them,
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: they're not allowed to give you more money. And and
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: Lester's in the back going show kids, show Kids, was
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: given them a hundred dollars bills everywhere. So the player,
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: she tells that story all the time they were playing, right,
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: was epic.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: It was just and I remember.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Gimpster and remember Dempster and Theo.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: Reil racing down the hallways on the in.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: The cars, down the down the aisles and the little
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: uh the Beverans cards.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like taking off, Yeah, it's going down.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: They're flying down there and not not safe.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: I remember too. A big thing for me. I think
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: being with the Cubs for so long up to that
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: point and then playing after was like there's so much
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: there's so many guys who played before us that set
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: the tone for us there, and I after we won,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: like I made sure to say that, like this is
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: for Ernie Banks, the Ron Santos, the Samberg's right, even
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: the Starlin Castros, the Shorianos, the veterans, I played with
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: Ryan Dempster, Carrie Would The list goes on on, but
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: those guys were such a big part and so loved
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: here in Chicago. Like I always wanted to make them
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: feel like they want it with us, because they they
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: laid the groundwork first. And I remember driving back is
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: like five in the morning on the buses and Dempster
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: was with us. Ryan Dempster was was with us on
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: the bus. I'm like almost like, dude, take the trophy,
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: and like I gave him the trophy forly and he
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: like he he literally reminded me the other days like, dude,
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: that was so awesome that he did that, Like, because
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: that's how much those guys mean. It's like respecting the
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: guys before you, right, no doubt. And then we get home.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: I have the trophy getting off the bus and I'm like,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna take this home, right, So I took it home.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: I have a picture of it, like with the perfect
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: shot of like it's in my bed with Lake Michigan
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: in the background. And I got a text at like
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: eight thirty in the morning. It's I literally get home
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: at like six thirty, barely slept. My phone's blown up
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: by VJ are traveling secretaries like, hey, Lester's pissed you
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: have the trophy. I'm like, I don't really give.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: The fuck left they're talking about that. Why does Tony
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: got the trophy?
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: So I bring it back to Wriglely, Like I get
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: there like nine nine thirty, leave Wrigley, go to Bottle
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Blonde here in Chicago, me and my wife my girlfriend
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: at the time, and we just go siting Bottle Blond
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: in Chicago from ten am to about five am, like
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: we literally go. We sit there for like probably ten
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: hours in battlah blah all. My friend opened it up
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: on like, hey, are you up. He's like, yeah, you
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: want to come in. I came in. He still has
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the bottle of Crown that I drank that day. He
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: had me sign it like years later. He's like, dude,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: this is the bottle your first bottle of Crown you
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: drank after winning the World Series. And then we go
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: out there, all my friends come. Then I come back
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: to Wrigley at some point with all my friends. I
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: have pictures on the field like with the trophy just
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: you could do whatever you want.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, right, And then we got a ride home at
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: way from the plate a ride from I don't know
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: if you're at town. We we're meeting everybody at country
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: club and we're in the back of the police cup.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: Yeah. It's just like you see all the reactions ofs
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: and it was like, holy shit, we knew. I knew
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: how big it was gonna be. I really did. Everyone's like,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: do you don't understand. I'm like, no, I do understand.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: And then it happened and it was like my expectations
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: were here of it and they were high, and it
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: blew them out, blew them out of the water. Like
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: the people at the graves going and saying like laying
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: the w flags on their parents or grandparents or whoever's graves,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: and like people listening to the final out pat use
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: iconic moment at the gravesite.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: Like it's just that's my favorite thing to ask when
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: I travel is people come up and say, you know,
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: thanks for twenty sixteen, or they want a picture or something.
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: It's like I want to hear their Game seven story
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: and the passion they have the fans, like you're so
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: thankful for just the generational fandom that has been passed
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: down from so many people. And I mean Michelle Obama
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: told us at the White House about Washington with her
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: dad started crying. I mean, like it just like those
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: stories that fans give us are so much more valuable
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: than you know, the Ring or any of that. Like,
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: I love hearing their story.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: I think the best part too, is look ten years later,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: I'm not kidding, the passion that the fans have when
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: they tell those stories are literally still the same. It's
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: like these people. I literally it was at opening day
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: yesterday twenty twenty six, and people are crying about what
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: it meant to win the World Series, and it was
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: it's just so awesome. Yeah, what Cubs fans meant to us,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: and how they showed out for that parade, because that parade,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: that part six million.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: I remember looking of being on stage and like you
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: said so many nice things, and you know you're not
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: concussed at the time, but you started getting a little
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: teary eyed too. And I couldn't even get any words
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: out because how I wanted to thank all the guys
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: and tell them all what they meant to me, like
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: and how each guy affected me, and I couldn't.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: Get a little Like you, you.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Could barely get anything out. But like you looked out
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: and I just saw like the heads of people and
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: then the tree tops like it just like people were
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: in the trees way off, way off in the distance.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: It was. It was.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: It's iconic. Yeah, it was just it was literally and
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: the parties to follow the parade and like, bro, literally
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: that yesterday again, I'm that opening day and it's just
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: me because I've had a crazy schedule and everyone's coming
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: up and it's like, hey, how are your parents, how's Emily?
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Like we haven't been here in ten years, right, and
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: everyone's like, how's your wife doing? We loved her like
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: we missed her so much. Were your parents? Your father? Man?
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: Like your father we drank one night and just like
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: all the ushers and people that working at Wrigley are
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: like genuinely asking about my family, and it's just like,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: that's how much of a family playing here in Chicago is.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: And it's just why you call this home, why I
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: love this place much. Yeah, it's a special place. The
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: friendly confinence is real, and the people around here. I
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: remember all the police officers when I come back and
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: go to a football game or whatever, they thank us
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: for the overtime they got.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: In two thousand six time, they got a big check
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: for forgetting right and then like crown, all the people
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: play more years here.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: Obviously, I get traded, go to New York and really
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: enjoy my time in New York, go to another World
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: Series and lose, and like it's gut wrenching, right, that's
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: like exactly you you won their last game you ever
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: played and I lost it, okay, And funny story, I
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: was at the final of the WBC and Rossi's getting
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: a silver medal after they lost, and I have a
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: video and I got to boom in and I go, hah,
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: how's it feel to finish second? Now? Because he used
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: to always screaming, I don't know what finishing second feels like.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that wasn't a good feel and that was a
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: good field, but this was this was I mean, this
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: podcast is going to be unbelievable with telling all these stories.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: We're so thankful for.

- 1:15:42Speaker 1: of our guys, like you're it's such a treat and
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: it's it gets emotional. There's so many stories there's it
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: all comes full circle and the fact that all the
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: guys were so nervous coming like what's this going to
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: be about and then when we're done, they're like, dude,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: I could have talked for four more hours. It's just
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: it's so special. We had our reunion already a little bit,
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: the one night and having all the guys back was incredible.
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: And in July when we have another reunion the whole weekend,

- 1:16:29Speaker 1: all year, and we can't wait to tell you guys
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: for the ride with.
