- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Faithful Fitness Podcast for my Dad. Coach
- 0:06Speaker 1: Alex Van Houghten helps you get stronger in mind, body
- 0:09Speaker 1: and spirit. He believes that your body is a temple,
- 0:12Speaker 1: so taking good care of it is an actual worship.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I should know.
- 0:15Speaker 3: I live with.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Him every week. He brings truth from the Bible to
- 0:19Speaker 1: some science and stories that will set your heart on fire.
- 0:22Speaker 1: May God bless you to become everything He made you
- 0:25Speaker 1: to be, just one percent better every single day.
- 0:29Speaker 4: So anyways, this guy is following me, and I just
- 0:32Speaker 4: had a gut feeling that there's something something off about
- 0:35Speaker 4: this guy. So I walk a little faster and then
- 0:37Speaker 4: he runs and he tries to grab me, and I
- 0:40Speaker 4: screamed in Jesus's name, get your hands off me. And
- 0:45Speaker 4: he looked up at me and he had this look
- 0:48Speaker 4: of fear on his face.
- 0:51Speaker 5: That moment changed how Christina understood strength. Most people quit
- 0:55Speaker 5: fitness because they're chasing appearance instead of readiness. They trained hard,
- 0:59Speaker 5: and they still all apart. Today, we redeem fitness as stewardship, preparation,
- 1:05Speaker 5: and obedience because faith doesn't replace strength and gives it
- 1:10Speaker 5: of Coach Alex how this is faithful fitness.
- 1:18Speaker 2: What's up, guys.
- 1:18Speaker 5: This is coach Alex Van Howton on the Faithful Fitness Podcast.
- 1:21Speaker 5: Our mission is to help you make the most out
- 1:23Speaker 5: of the body God's given you, and I am so
- 1:25Speaker 5: excited about today's episode because we have our guest from California,
- 1:30Speaker 5: Miss Christina Barkley.
- 1:32Speaker 2: How you doing girl, I'm great.
- 1:34Speaker 3: How are you?
- 1:35Speaker 5: I'm doing awesome, And I'm really excited about this conversation.
- 1:39Speaker 5: We are going to be talking about the New Year's resolutions,
- 1:42Speaker 5: We're going to be talking swapping stories of training. We've
- 1:45Speaker 5: both been trainers for over a decade and we also
- 1:50Speaker 5: both run our own personal training businesses, which I don't
- 1:53Speaker 5: really get to talk much about here on the Faithful
- 1:55Speaker 5: Fitness Podcast. You run Dogged Strength with your husband, correct correct, Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Since twenty eighteen.
- 2:04Speaker 2: That's awesome. That's awesome.
- 2:06Speaker 5: So I can't wait to talk about We have so
- 2:07Speaker 5: many things to talk about here, but first I'm just
- 2:09Speaker 5: going to I'm just going to lay a fun question
- 2:13Speaker 5: on you real quick, and that is this, So this
- 2:16Speaker 5: morning you had a client cancel first thing in the
- 2:19Speaker 5: morning and you got some extra sleep. Can you please
- 2:23Speaker 5: help our listeners understand why that's so nice and painful
- 2:28Speaker 5: for a trainer.
- 2:29Speaker 2: At the same time.
- 2:32Speaker 4: It's nice because I mean, we all want a little
- 2:35Speaker 4: extra sleep, and we usually trainers. Most trainers are up
- 2:40Speaker 4: at the crack of dawn or before sunrise, so just
- 2:44Speaker 4: the chance to have that a little slow down in
- 2:46Speaker 4: the morning is such a blessing.
- 2:48Speaker 3: But at the same time, you know, you have goals
- 2:50Speaker 3: for your client.
- 2:51Speaker 4: You don't want them to be, you know, sick or
- 2:54Speaker 4: ill or anything, so when they cancel, you feel bad.
- 2:57Speaker 4: And then of course the money too. You only get
- 2:59Speaker 4: paid when they train, so that hurts too. But I've
- 3:03Speaker 4: learned over the years that just let God provide, Like
- 3:07Speaker 4: there's always a reason, like He may have needed me
- 3:10Speaker 4: to spend more time with him this morning, or you know,
- 3:13Speaker 4: that client may have needed more rest. So I'm getting
- 3:16Speaker 4: better at just like just letting God just take over,
- 3:19Speaker 4: not worry.
- 3:20Speaker 3: About my schedule too much. So was it was definitely
- 3:24Speaker 3: a blessing to sleep in this morning.
- 3:26Speaker 5: So I have a trainer to trainer question, and for
- 3:30Speaker 5: the rest of the audience it might not make any sense,
- 3:32Speaker 5: but how do you wake up before client session? I've
- 3:36Speaker 5: trained clients at five I've trained clients at five thirty
- 3:39Speaker 5: and I've trained clients at six And no matter what
- 3:41Speaker 5: the first session of the day looks like, there's always
- 3:44Speaker 5: like a wake up process for me so that I
- 3:46Speaker 5: can bring my best to the table for my client session.
- 3:49Speaker 2: How do you wake up?
- 3:51Speaker 3: Well, I wake up with a pretty jarring alarm clock
- 3:56Speaker 3: to make sure I wake up.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Because I'm always afraid I don't want to oversleep miss
- 4:00Speaker 4: any sessions. So I get up, I do a quick prayer,
- 4:05Speaker 4: and I do a quick you know reading of my
- 4:09Speaker 4: I open my Bible and just look for just some
- 4:11Speaker 4: some verse to just you know, have h to take
- 4:14Speaker 4: with me for the day. I do later studies when
- 4:18Speaker 4: I'm more awake and later in the day. And then
- 4:21Speaker 4: I have two dogs, so they have to get out,
- 4:24Speaker 4: so it forces me to get up and get moving
- 4:27Speaker 4: and wake up. One of them is fourteen years old,
- 4:31Speaker 4: so I actually have to carry her down the stairs side.
- 4:34Speaker 4: And then the other one is a rambunctious four year old,
- 4:37Speaker 4: So so yeah, I almost have like a little pre
- 4:40Speaker 4: workout before before my client sessions.
- 4:43Speaker 3: And then coffee.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Of course, coffee is a mess too, so so yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 4: that's what my morning usually looks like. So by the
- 4:50Speaker 4: time I see my first client, I am pretty wide awake.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Yep, yep, I feel that, I feel that a little joggins.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I'm heavy metal are my personal favorites.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I get it.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Get about three minutes of activity in there, and I'm awake.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Come on, let's go, let's go. This is awesome.
- 5:06Speaker 5: So, so you and your husband run a company called
- 5:09Speaker 5: Dogged Strength, which which obviously is a personal training business
- 5:14Speaker 5: in fitness company. And I've got to say that that
- 5:18Speaker 5: most most husband and wives.
- 5:21Speaker 2: That I know can't work out together.
- 5:24Speaker 5: But that wasn't your guys' story, and it's not it's
- 5:26Speaker 5: not my wife and my story either. Actually she's a
- 5:29Speaker 5: dietician and we can work out together and and that's fun.
- 5:31Speaker 5: But I've I've got to ask, how did you guys
- 5:35Speaker 5: launch a personal training business together in a way that
- 5:38Speaker 5: was good for you both and good for your marriage.
- 5:43Speaker 3: It was definitely unique kind of I guess I should
- 5:46Speaker 3: start with how how we met?
- 5:48Speaker 4: So, so, before I got into training, I was in casting.
- 5:52Speaker 4: I was in the entertainment business, and I worked in
- 5:54Speaker 4: the casting and television industry, and I was I was
- 5:59Speaker 4: pretty out by the time I met my husband, and
- 6:03Speaker 4: and he could see that, and I wasn't the most healthiest,
- 6:06Speaker 4: just stressed and not not eating right over exercising and
- 6:11Speaker 4: not lifting weights and so so he's the one that
- 6:14Speaker 4: got I was just into running and doing whatever it was.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You were a cardio bunny, I can't pick it. I was.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I was a cardio bunny.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Yeah, and but I was doing it for vanity reasons.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I was doing it being in the entertainment business.
- 6:29Speaker 4: You know, that's kind of to be expected to look
- 6:31Speaker 4: a certain way, especially in the casting world. But but
- 6:34Speaker 4: he was like, you would be much happier if you
- 6:36Speaker 4: lifted weights and you have way more results, and yeah, exactly.
- 6:41Speaker 3: So I was just like, ways are.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Boring, Like I don't I don't really feel like I
- 6:44Speaker 4: need to or whatever.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So so I'll just say real quick.
- 6:49Speaker 4: So on my way to dinner with him, whe night,
- 6:53Speaker 4: I was living by myself in a studio and most
- 6:56Speaker 4: feelss and I had to walk through an alley way
- 6:59Speaker 4: to get to my car. And one night, as I'm
- 7:03Speaker 4: walking through this alleyway that I always do, and it
- 7:05Speaker 4: was it's funny enough, it was actually this week, like
- 7:08Speaker 4: in two thousand and sevens so whatever that was the
- 7:10Speaker 4: week or it was the week of Halloween. So so anyways,
- 7:15Speaker 4: this guy is following me, and I just had a
- 7:16Speaker 4: gut feeling that there's something something off about this guy.
- 7:20Speaker 4: So I walk a little faster and then he runs
- 7:22Speaker 4: and he tries to grab me, and and I screamed
- 7:27Speaker 4: in Jesus's name, get.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Your hands off me.
- 7:30Speaker 4: And he looked up at me, and he had this
- 7:33Speaker 4: look of fear on his face, and just this horrific
- 7:37Speaker 4: look on his face. And he let go and he
- 7:39Speaker 4: ran off, and I remember when he looked up that
- 7:43Speaker 4: there was like a light and I thought it was
- 7:44Speaker 4: like a censor light or someone's a garage light that
- 7:47Speaker 4: went off. And I looked behind me and there's there's
- 7:50Speaker 4: no light, there's no there's nothing. So that was definitely
- 7:54Speaker 4: a moment where I felt the protection of the whole
- 7:58Speaker 4: spirit or maybe a you know, one of his arch
- 8:00Speaker 4: angels was right above me.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And those guys look scary. They're always saying, hey, don't
- 8:05Speaker 2: be afraid. Don't exactly exactly, so I mean, I don't.
- 8:08Speaker 4: I like to think that maybe that's what he saw,
- 8:11Speaker 4: but but because something changed his mind drastically, so from
- 8:15Speaker 4: that point on, I was I was less about exercising
- 8:19Speaker 4: to look a certain way, and I wanted to exercise
- 8:22Speaker 4: to be strong and look confident and look like at
- 8:25Speaker 4: least looked like more work too, you know, for someone
- 8:28Speaker 4: to attack, like. I just wanted to look like, Okay,
- 8:31Speaker 4: maybe I won't mess with that girl, you know. So
- 8:35Speaker 4: then I asked my my, my then boyfriend, my now husband, Okay,
- 8:39Speaker 4: I'm ready to I'm ready to learn how to lift
- 8:42Speaker 4: some weights just because I want to be strong.
- 8:44Speaker 2: And he was happy to teach you. I'm sure.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he was totally he was totally happy to
- 8:48Speaker 3: teach me.
- 8:49Speaker 4: So yeah, so so then so we started. So he
- 8:54Speaker 4: taught me little by little and then and then I
- 8:57Speaker 4: slowly started to just fall in love with it. And
- 8:59Speaker 4: then women at the gym would come up to me
- 9:00Speaker 4: and ask me for help with this machine, or you
- 9:03Speaker 4: look like you know what you're doing, how.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Do I how do I do this? Or how do
- 9:06Speaker 3: I look like you? Or whatever? And I just really
- 9:09Speaker 3: enjoyed showing them.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 4: And then I didn't want to be at the office anymore.
- 9:13Speaker 4: I was like, I just want to be at the gym.
- 9:16Speaker 4: So I felt the nudge, I felt God leading me
- 9:21Speaker 4: to change my career.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Yeah, so can can I can I sit on that
- 9:25Speaker 5: for just a second, because that's like, because because that
- 9:28Speaker 5: that was that experience of people asking for advice. And
- 9:35Speaker 5: it's not like you were a certified personal trainer at
- 9:37Speaker 5: the time. It was just you were in you were
- 9:38Speaker 5: in the practice. You were there, you know, every day
- 9:41Speaker 5: or every other day, doing your work, doing the lifts,
- 9:45Speaker 5: making it look good. And I don't just mean like vainly,
- 9:47Speaker 5: I mean like you you look like you know what
- 9:49Speaker 5: you're doing, right, and when you're when you're in the
- 9:51Speaker 5: trenches and you're practicing, people will naturally come ask you
- 9:55Speaker 5: like what do you how do you do that?
- 9:57Speaker 2: What are you doing? How do I look like you?
- 9:59Speaker 2: How do I get strong?
- 10:00Speaker 5: You know, like like you make that look easy, you
- 10:03Speaker 5: know that that sort of thing. And when you get
- 10:05Speaker 5: to show somebody something happens, Like something happens when they
- 10:09Speaker 5: go from I'm not confident in this, I'm scared of this,
- 10:12Speaker 5: but I want to learn two, I can do this.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Something happens right there.
- 10:17Speaker 5: That that for me, that's what that's what training is
- 10:20Speaker 5: all about. That's that's why you get out of bed
- 10:23Speaker 5: at five in the morning to train a client, right,
- 10:25Speaker 5: I mean, they might pay you for that.
- 10:27Speaker 2: But it's like, look, if I didn't have to make
- 10:28Speaker 2: any money, I.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Would still do this for free. Can can you talk
- 10:31Speaker 5: to me a bit more about how how that felt
- 10:34Speaker 5: for you, how you fell in love with that, and
- 10:37Speaker 5: if that's still the case today.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Yeah, well it's definitely.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Complimentary, Like it boosted my confidence too, like oh you
- 10:47Speaker 4: think you think I know what I'm doing, you know? So,
- 10:53Speaker 4: so yeah, it boosted my confidence. But then afterwards, seeing
- 10:56Speaker 4: like if I saw that same woman doing the exercise
- 10:58Speaker 4: I showed her a few weeks earlier, it was.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Like, oh she's doing it now, she knows what she's doing,
- 11:04Speaker 3: you know.
- 11:05Speaker 4: So so yeah, it's definitely it makes you feel like
- 11:10Speaker 4: you've made a difference. So you've made their lives better
- 11:14Speaker 4: because you know, like it's made my life so much better,
- 11:17Speaker 4: so you just you can't not share it. So it's
- 11:21Speaker 4: just and it's still the case today for sure.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Yeah. I love that. So Jesus.
- 11:27Speaker 5: A lot a lot of Christians, if I asked them,
- 11:29Speaker 5: what's your job as a Christian, they would say, uh,
- 11:33Speaker 5: like it might be like be a good person, follow
- 11:36Speaker 5: Jesus and like those fine, but Jesus actually gave us
- 11:40Speaker 5: a job it's called the Great commission.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Go forth and make disciples of all nations.
- 11:44Speaker 5: Teaching them everything that I've commanded you, and baptizing them,
- 11:46Speaker 5: and name the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 11:49Speaker 5: And Lowell will be with you always, even to the
- 11:51Speaker 5: end of the age. That's the great commission at the
- 11:53Speaker 5: end of Matthew. And and the word disciple there disciple
- 11:59Speaker 5: or disciple will ship that. The word in Greek actually
- 12:03Speaker 5: means to rub off on. It's like doing life with
- 12:07Speaker 5: somebody or or executing some activity.
- 12:12Speaker 2: It brings to mind this.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Shoulder to shoulder thing where some of me, some of
- 12:17Speaker 5: what's good in me, some of what God's given me,
- 12:20Speaker 5: rubs off on you because of proximity and practice. And
- 12:25Speaker 5: I find that so alive in training, because let's say
- 12:29Speaker 5: you don't know how to deadlift, and your back hurts,
- 12:32Speaker 5: and your lats are not working well, and you can't
- 12:37Speaker 5: tie your shoe without pain, let alone pick up one
- 12:39Speaker 5: hundred and fifteen pound.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Weight or whatever.
- 12:42Speaker 5: And so through the process of weekly practice, through strengthening
- 12:47Speaker 5: the correct muscles, through learning how to breathe well, through
- 12:50Speaker 5: body position and whatnot, through that process, suddenly somebody who
- 12:55Speaker 5: had back pain can now deadlift like I was deadlifting
- 13:01Speaker 5: because I've rubbed off on them, right, And like, for
- 13:05Speaker 5: for me, it's such a picture of discipleship. Training in
- 13:08Speaker 5: that way is such a picture of discipleship, and for
- 13:10Speaker 5: me always led me back to what Christ said to do,
- 13:14Speaker 5: which is to to make disciples. Now that you know,
- 13:18Speaker 5: disciples have to deadlift to follow Jesus, although that's arguable
- 13:23Speaker 5: maybe we don't have We don't have to make that
- 13:25Speaker 5: argument here, but but do you find do you find
- 13:28Speaker 5: that to be fulfilling in the same way with the
- 13:30Speaker 5: idea of rubbing off on somebody in a positive direction?
- 13:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's like it's it's good news, it's
- 13:38Speaker 4: good information, right, so it's like how do I.
- 13:41Speaker 3: How do I not share it?
- 13:44Speaker 4: And so so I I with the Great commission too,
- 13:48Speaker 4: just considering that as I'm training people from all backgrounds
- 13:52Speaker 4: and all religions and all, you know, just a variety
- 13:56Speaker 4: of people, you know, just having to share the light
- 14:01Speaker 4: of Jesus is just like whether it's through my actions,
- 14:06Speaker 4: like how I show my love to them, like in
- 14:08Speaker 4: and out of our sessions too. So so I think
- 14:12Speaker 4: it's it's something that I'm like urged to do, Like
- 14:17Speaker 4: I just feel like I have to to give them
- 14:20Speaker 4: good news, whether it's you know, good nutritional info. You know,
- 14:25Speaker 4: you definitely can lift heavier than that because I can
- 14:28Speaker 4: see you can You're.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Still you know, you're not fatigued at twelve reps. We
- 14:32Speaker 3: need to go heavier.
- 14:34Speaker 4: So so I think not not holding back you know, good information.
- 14:40Speaker 4: So just like you know the Gospel, you know, it's
- 14:43Speaker 4: just one of those things that you know, it's it's
- 14:47Speaker 4: such good, good comfort, peace, joy, all those things. So
- 14:54Speaker 4: so yeah, and in my sessions, when when the timing
- 14:57Speaker 4: is right too, I try to slip in little litle
- 15:00Speaker 4: nuggets of you know, biblical wisdom and.
- 15:04Speaker 3: And then revelation. Wellness has definitely.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Helped me with that too, where where it's not separate,
- 15:09Speaker 4: you know, like our our lives shouldn't be compartmentalized, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 4: so living for Christ, He's with us everywhere always, so
- 15:19Speaker 4: so incorporating corporating that into my work life, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 4: has been huge.
- 15:26Speaker 5: That that was actually the impetus for the Faithful Fitness
- 15:29Speaker 5: devotional that that I wrote and published. The it was
- 15:34Speaker 5: hard for me at first in my client sessions to
- 15:37Speaker 5: be able to articulate where where Scripture fit into this thing.
- 15:42Speaker 5: And that took me years. It took me years of
- 15:45Speaker 5: meditating on these practices.
- 15:47Speaker 2: For myself.
- 15:47Speaker 5: I understood it, I felt it, but it was difficult
- 15:50Speaker 5: to work that into a conversation, particularly if I had
- 15:53Speaker 5: a client I was working with who wasn't a believer
- 15:56Speaker 5: or maybe not not not uh, you know, from a
- 15:59Speaker 5: Christian tradition, maybe they weren't opposed to Christianity. But the
- 16:03Speaker 5: idea of quoting Jesus in a in a workout setting was.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Like, what are you doing? Weird? But but it but.
- 16:11Speaker 5: It evolved and and that's you know, that's really what
- 16:14Speaker 5: was the impetus for for writing Faithful Fitness was taking
- 16:17Speaker 5: scripture and saying, hey, this doesn't need faith and fitness
- 16:20Speaker 5: don't need to be a separate thing. It's not like
- 16:23Speaker 5: I go to church and I read my Bible and
- 16:25Speaker 5: I pray and sometimes I exercise.
- 16:28Speaker 2: It's it's more like, no, no.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Our our exercise practice, stewarding our body in exercise and
- 16:34Speaker 5: stewarding our body and nutrition. That's that's actually deeply scriptural
- 16:38Speaker 5: and can bring scripture to life in such a powerful
- 16:40Speaker 5: way if you're willing to chew on it. No pun
- 16:43Speaker 5: intended if you're willing to chew on it in the
- 16:45Speaker 5: middle of your weight training session. I've had I've had
- 16:48Speaker 5: quite a few in this this in this very gym,
- 16:52Speaker 5: quite a few intimate times with my father, and also
- 16:54Speaker 5: intimate times with clients where where they're working through something
- 16:57Speaker 5: difficult and scripture comes alive for them all the time. Sudden,
- 17:00Speaker 5: I guess on that note, are there any scriptures that
- 17:02Speaker 5: that really stand out to you when you exercise right now,
- 17:05Speaker 5: that that you're really munching on that inspire you.
- 17:10Speaker 3: I mean, right now, I'm trying to think. You put
- 17:13Speaker 3: me on the spot.
- 17:15Speaker 4: I mean I have a life for I mean everyone,
- 17:18Speaker 4: A lot of believers have life versus and that's my
- 17:20Speaker 4: mine would be probably Proverbs three five through seven. Trust
- 17:23Speaker 4: in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on
- 17:24Speaker 4: your own understanding, So just surrendering to him and not
- 17:30Speaker 4: not having everything in your control that ultimately it's up
- 17:34Speaker 4: you're submitting everything to his control and trusting that you
- 17:38Speaker 4: know he knows, he knows better than you know.
- 17:41Speaker 3: So that that's one that I often lean on. And
- 17:46Speaker 3: then are.
- 17:48Speaker 4: I like to think of my work and anything where
- 17:51Speaker 4: I'm working unto the Lord. So one Corinthians was at
- 17:56Speaker 4: fifteen fifty eight. So you know your your labor's not
- 17:59Speaker 4: in vain if it's on to the Lord. So anytime
- 18:01Speaker 4: I dedicate anything to him, I know that there's going
- 18:05Speaker 4: to be fruit from it, just because it's it's his.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Yes, yes, awesome, Thanks for sharing this, and sorry to
- 18:11Speaker 5: put you on the spot. Sometimes I always have scripture
- 18:14Speaker 5: bouncing around in my head. But but sometimes when I'm
- 18:16Speaker 5: on the spot, it's like it disappears.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Oh no, oh no, it went it went away.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Let me let me Rea, And I don't know if
- 18:23Speaker 5: you mess with this or not. From my background, I
- 18:26Speaker 5: learned scripture in the King James version, but when I
- 18:30Speaker 5: go to quote it to somebody, I want it to
- 18:32Speaker 5: be understandable, So I'm trying to translate to EESV or something.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Right exactly exactly. It's so nice we have all those versions.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Right. So, given this conversation about training and how how
- 18:45Speaker 5: mentoring and discipling, how they're they're kind of the same
- 18:48Speaker 5: thing where we get to rub off on people.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I want to talk about.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Since it's you know, the time of year that people
- 18:52Speaker 5: are coming back or planning on coming back. If somebody
- 18:56Speaker 5: is listening to this, just before the first of January,
- 18:58Speaker 5: you're planning on starting your workouts. If you're one of
- 19:02Speaker 5: the very few faithful who are still doing deadlifts, my
- 19:05Speaker 5: heart goes out to you. Where do your mother cut
- 19:08Speaker 5: from the same cloth? But if you're like, no, no,
- 19:10Speaker 5: I'm going to start in twenty twenty six. I want
- 19:12Speaker 5: to talk about New Year's resolutions, because as as a
- 19:16Speaker 5: personal trainer is somebody who works with people on a
- 19:19Speaker 5: regular basis, new Year's resolutions, I've kind of I have
- 19:23Speaker 5: strong opinions about them. I've had times where I hate
- 19:26Speaker 5: them and times where I'm so excited about them. But
- 19:29Speaker 5: all of it, for me really boils down to this
- 19:32Speaker 5: thing where it hurts my heart so badly to see
- 19:35Speaker 5: people work so hard and achieve very little results and
- 19:38Speaker 5: not stick with it. That drives me absolutely bonkers for
- 19:44Speaker 5: clients or potential clients, or just the world at large,
- 19:48Speaker 5: because I love when people see progress in their health
- 19:51Speaker 5: and fitness. And I say health and fitness together because
- 19:55Speaker 5: working out really hard for a couple of weeks is
- 19:57Speaker 5: not healthy. I want to see people improve consistently. But
- 20:01Speaker 5: you wrote an awesome article about this, and it actually
- 20:04Speaker 5: is on the Revelation wellness blog, and so I enjoyed
- 20:08Speaker 5: reading it, but it kind of centered around the idea
- 20:10Speaker 5: of like, hey, let's get this right this year. Let's
- 20:12Speaker 5: let's redeem the idea of resolutions in light of Christ
- 20:18Speaker 5: and the light of your your pursuit of His kingdom.
- 20:22Speaker 5: And so so I want to talk to you trainer
- 20:23Speaker 5: to trainer, but also from a faith perspective about resolutions.
- 20:28Speaker 5: And you did write this in twenty twenty four, so
- 20:30Speaker 5: it's been a bit you might have you might have
- 20:32Speaker 5: evolved or adapted your your thoughts on this as a
- 20:35Speaker 5: trainer and also as a as a believer.
- 20:37Speaker 2: But I want to ask you, I guess first.
- 20:41Speaker 5: When when you see a client or you see a
- 20:44Speaker 5: potential client, because you work in the gym, everybody's a
- 20:46Speaker 5: potential client. If if you're working out with individuals, then
- 20:51Speaker 5: when you see them pursuing the new year's resolution, what
- 20:55Speaker 5: is your what is your knee jerk like gut response
- 20:59Speaker 5: that that you think and feel?
- 21:01Speaker 4: First, I love the motivation when people come back. I
- 21:08Speaker 4: think it's it's good to get them in the door.
- 21:11Speaker 4: I just I often see people doing too much too soon,
- 21:15Speaker 4: so they're just you know.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Gung ho.
- 21:17Speaker 4: The motivation is high, so they're really going for it.
- 21:21Speaker 3: But I just I just.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Know from over the years and my own experience too,
- 21:25Speaker 4: that burnout.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Is on the horizon, crude oz.
- 21:29Speaker 4: So I just really, you know, I emphasize the clients.
- 21:34Speaker 4: You know, if you have goals, make sure they're attainable,
- 21:37Speaker 4: make sure they're measurable, make sure maybe have them have
- 21:42Speaker 4: short term and long term goals so that way you
- 21:44Speaker 4: don't get discouraged. So I just I wish I could
- 21:49Speaker 4: tell people, especially when I see a bunch of new
- 21:52Speaker 4: people at the gym, you know.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Just just try to commit to like twice a week.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Don't come five times a week. Start with two times
- 21:59Speaker 4: a week and then me be a third day. But
- 22:02Speaker 4: it's more the long haul. So fitness is an investment,
- 22:06Speaker 4: so you want to really do it the rest of
- 22:10Speaker 4: your life essentially.
- 22:12Speaker 3: So if you're going.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Into it thinking, oh, I'm just gonna kill myself for
- 22:16Speaker 4: six weeks and then I'll I'll get the results I'm after,
- 22:19Speaker 4: it doesn't work that way. It's something that you have
- 22:22Speaker 4: to just continually, uh work on. So I've heard a
- 22:28Speaker 4: really good quote once that it says that fitness is
- 22:32Speaker 4: fitness isn't owned, it's rented, so you have to pay rent.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Every day, every day.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think the same applies, you know, spiritually too.
- 22:45Speaker 4: So I think you can definitely feel spiritually empty if
- 22:49Speaker 4: you're not daily digging into the Word, or you're not daily.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Spending time with with God.
- 22:55Speaker 4: You know, you can kind of feel feel that weakness
- 22:57Speaker 4: start to creep in. Yeah, it's about finding finding time
- 23:03Speaker 4: on the regular, you know, to meet with him. So
- 23:08Speaker 4: but yeah, as far as the the gym goes, you know,
- 23:12Speaker 4: start small, start small, and.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Do it consistently.
- 23:14Speaker 2: That's exactly right. More progress, that's exactly right for me.
- 23:18Speaker 5: That's actually rooted in in exercise science, which which I
- 23:22Speaker 5: know for many people, faith.
- 23:23Speaker 2: And science are at odds. I don't think that at all.
- 23:25Speaker 5: I think I think that that science teaches us how
- 23:28Speaker 5: to understand what it is that God's made and it's
- 23:31Speaker 5: and I'm always in awe. I'm always in awe of
- 23:33Speaker 5: how it works. It's amazing. And and exercise science teaches
- 23:36Speaker 5: us that that if if I want to create an
- 23:40Speaker 5: adaptation in myself, and I use the word adaptation because
- 23:44Speaker 5: it's important, if I go work out and I burn,
- 23:47Speaker 5: I don't know, six hundred calories in a really hard
- 23:50Speaker 5: one hour session. That would that would be a mean session,
- 23:52Speaker 5: by the way, Like I'd be very sweaty, I'd be
- 23:54Speaker 5: wore out, I'd be pretty sore afterward. Right, I burned
- 23:56Speaker 5: six hundred calories. That if if I don't adapt, then
- 24:01Speaker 5: that's the end of the magic. That's kind of what
- 24:03Speaker 5: you were experiencing as a cardio bunny. Right, It's just
- 24:06Speaker 5: like working your butt off all the.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Time, burning all the galleries. Right. And weight training.
- 24:11Speaker 5: What I love about weight training as a discipline is
- 24:13Speaker 5: that it's always geared toward adaptation.
- 24:15Speaker 2: It's the idea that dead.
- 24:16Speaker 5: If I can, if I can bring the proper amount
- 24:19Speaker 5: of stress to the proper muscle groups in the proper way,
- 24:22Speaker 5: then what happens is is the way God made my body,
- 24:26Speaker 5: I will adapt. I will change for the long haul.
- 24:29Speaker 5: I will I will shift, i will change. I'll get stronger,
- 24:31Speaker 5: I'll get denser, I'll get more flexible or more powerful
- 24:35Speaker 5: or whatever the goal. Whatever the goal is the idea
- 24:38Speaker 5: of using exercise as a scalpel rather than a sledgehammer.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:41Speaker 5: But when I talk to people, I'm always explaining, Look,
- 24:45Speaker 5: I want you to adapt in a way that you
- 24:49Speaker 5: can have forever or not, you know, till till God
- 24:53Speaker 5: decides to call you away from this earth, and who
- 24:55Speaker 5: knows what at Adaptation in heaven looks like.
- 24:58Speaker 2: But here, But here you can adapt.
- 25:02Speaker 5: So that the strength you gain, or the muscle mass
- 25:06Speaker 5: you gain, or the fat you burn, or whatever your
- 25:08Speaker 5: goals are, you can adapt in a way that you're
- 25:12Speaker 5: done with that you don't have to you don't have
- 25:13Speaker 5: to burn this every time you're growing and moving in
- 25:17Speaker 5: that direction. And an exercise science, what we learn is
- 25:19Speaker 5: three variables of adaptation are consistency, volume, and intensity, And
- 25:25Speaker 5: in that order of importance, consistency matters way more than volume,
- 25:30Speaker 5: which is the total amount of time or total amount
- 25:33Speaker 5: of sets, which matters way more than intensity. Intensity is
- 25:37Speaker 5: how heavy it gets or how little rest you have
- 25:39Speaker 5: in between, or how quickly you move the weights right.
- 25:42Speaker 5: And so I'm always I'm always teaching people. It's the
- 25:47Speaker 5: cry of my heart sounds like yours. Do Please be consistent,
- 25:50Speaker 5: no matter what you do, just just be like.
- 25:53Speaker 2: It could be fifteen.
- 25:54Speaker 5: Minutes a day, it could be twenty minutes a day,
- 25:55Speaker 5: it could be two sessions a week, whatever it is,
- 25:57Speaker 5: but don't stop. Don't stop, How do you how do
- 26:01Speaker 5: you help to incorporate that into into your clients at
- 26:04Speaker 5: the very beginning.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Of the year.
- 26:07Speaker 4: At the very beginning we set we set goals like
- 26:11Speaker 4: three month goal, six month goal, and then your goal.
- 26:15Speaker 3: So I have them all email it to me at.
- 26:17Speaker 4: The beginning of the year and then we check in
- 26:19Speaker 4: and see how it's going.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 26:22Speaker 4: But also just daily thing like what can you do
- 26:24Speaker 4: every day that's going to help you too?
- 26:27Speaker 3: So is it drinking more water?
- 26:29Speaker 4: Is it you know, cooking most of your meals at
- 26:31Speaker 4: home or maybe just incorporate one day one day a
- 26:35Speaker 4: week of food preps so at least you have most
- 26:37Speaker 4: of your meals you know cooked, just to help you
- 26:40Speaker 4: make better decisions.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 26:42Speaker 4: So. And then also just there's a performance thing that
- 26:47Speaker 4: they've always wanted to do, like what do you want
- 26:49Speaker 4: to do you know, not necessarily for you know, getting
- 26:53Speaker 4: your pants sized down, but what is it that you've
- 26:55Speaker 4: always wanted to do that you can't do right now?
- 26:58Speaker 3: What can we do.
- 26:58Speaker 4: To lead you up to Yes, So that's what we
- 27:02Speaker 4: talked about at the beginning of the year. So not
- 27:03Speaker 4: just aesthetic but performance goals. And then a lot of
- 27:08Speaker 4: times it roots back to something coming up with the family.
- 27:12Speaker 3: So if it's you know, like a wedding, or if it's.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Well, I want to be able to play with my
- 27:17Speaker 4: kids or my grandkids and not not be tired or not.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Have trouble getting up off the floor, so stuff like that.
- 27:25Speaker 4: So if I know, like what the real also like why,
- 27:28Speaker 4: what's the why behind it? Why do you want to
- 27:30Speaker 4: do push up so bad on the ground, you know,
- 27:33Speaker 4: So it helps if you can remember the why behind it,
- 27:36Speaker 4: you're more likely to stick to it and keep going
- 27:40Speaker 4: until you get there. So so yeah, at the beginning
- 27:43Speaker 4: of the year, we just kind of have a conversation
- 27:46Speaker 4: and I think writing it down having them email it
- 27:49Speaker 4: is key. So it's almost like accountability, like oh it's
- 27:53Speaker 4: out there, it's not just it's not just you know,
- 27:56Speaker 4: spoken and forgotten.
- 27:59Speaker 2: So yeah, very useful.
- 28:00Speaker 5: And you can print it out and put it somewhere,
- 28:02Speaker 5: say hey, this is what I'm doing this year, stick
- 28:04Speaker 5: it on my fridge, share it with my wife or
- 28:06Speaker 5: husband or whoever.
- 28:08Speaker 2: That's yeah, that's very very powerful.
- 28:10Speaker 5: I've I've in the past several years developed the process
- 28:14Speaker 5: of just asking a client, hey, if you did everything
- 28:16Speaker 5: right this year, what would be different. And the opposite
- 28:21Speaker 5: question is if you if you messed everything up, what
- 28:25Speaker 5: would the result be?
- 28:26Speaker 2: Right?
- 28:27Speaker 5: Because for me, like you said, the three months, the
- 28:29Speaker 5: six month, the one year, that's that's how you run
- 28:33Speaker 5: a business. That's how you run that's how that's how
- 28:36Speaker 5: you deal with taxes, that's how you deal with that's
- 28:38Speaker 5: how you.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Deal with so many things in life.
- 28:40Speaker 5: And for some reason, when it comes to the body,
- 28:42Speaker 5: many people don't look at their body that way. It's like,
- 28:46Speaker 5: I need to lose this weight as fast as possible,
- 28:49Speaker 5: I need to get out of this pain as quickly
- 28:51Speaker 5: as possible.
- 28:51Speaker 2: And I get it.
- 28:53Speaker 5: You know, we live in a world of instant results,
- 28:54Speaker 5: and you know, shrink wrap, microwavable food and all that stuff.
- 28:59Speaker 2: But but when it comes to the.
- 29:00Speaker 5: Body, this is the body you're going to have as
- 29:04Speaker 5: long as you're here.
- 29:06Speaker 2: This is it.
- 29:06Speaker 5: This is the one and so and so when you
- 29:09Speaker 5: when you start thinking about your fitness goals in the
- 29:11Speaker 5: long term, and then you kind of work your way
- 29:14Speaker 5: back from there, you can say, Okay, what is realistic
- 29:16Speaker 5: a year from now, and maybe losing weight as fast
- 29:20Speaker 5: as possible in the next three weeks is not conducive
- 29:24Speaker 5: to keeping that a weight off by this time next year,
- 29:27Speaker 5: then you can really start to look at how consistency, volume,
- 29:31Speaker 5: and intensity work into your life.
- 29:36Speaker 2: You said something though in your.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Article I thought was very powerful and important and I
- 29:41Speaker 5: wanted to highlight it here. You said that in the
- 29:44Speaker 5: place that you live, so they're in California, it's it's
- 29:49Speaker 5: possible for people to look really fit on the outside
- 29:53Speaker 5: but to be spiritually starved.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Can you tell me more about that.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's it seems to be very common.
- 30:04Speaker 4: I mean, we're in the fitness capital pretty much of
- 30:07Speaker 4: the nation, by the beach, and so everyone's very obsessed
- 30:11Speaker 4: with looking a certain way. And I feel like there's
- 30:13Speaker 4: way more pressure because of social media. So I feel
- 30:17Speaker 4: like there's a big emphasis on that and the perception
- 30:22Speaker 4: people's perception of you is very important. But that you
- 30:28Speaker 4: can just tell that there's there even if they even
- 30:32Speaker 4: if they meet certain goals, even if they get you know,
- 30:35Speaker 4: to a size zero or whatever their whatever their goal is,
- 30:39Speaker 4: there's still something missing. If they if they don't know Jesus,
- 30:43Speaker 4: if they don't have.
- 30:44Speaker 3: A relationship with him, you can.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Just there's some there's there's always something else that they're
- 30:49Speaker 4: striving after so there's this like this dissatisfaction that just
- 30:55Speaker 4: never ends. So it's like they keep moving the the
- 31:00Speaker 4: what's the saying, they keep moving.
- 31:01Speaker 2: The goal line, Yeah, the needle.
- 31:05Speaker 5: So uh.
- 31:06Speaker 4: And if if they could just fill that hole, that
- 31:08Speaker 4: that void, knowing that there's a God that loves them
- 31:12Speaker 4: and died for them and you know, defeated death and
- 31:16Speaker 4: and wants to give them the hope and the promise
- 31:19Speaker 4: of life, you know, they might see their body in
- 31:23Speaker 4: a different way. It won't be for it won't be
- 31:25Speaker 4: for everyone else too. So having your body is is
- 31:29Speaker 4: i mean, ultimately it's celebrating the creator, so giving thanks
- 31:34Speaker 4: for what you have and so so yeah, it's it's
- 31:40Speaker 4: it's sort of challenging just because we're just inundated with images, advertising,
- 31:47Speaker 4: being you know, close to Hollywood and all that stuff,
- 31:49Speaker 4: where it seems like all of that is such a
- 31:53Speaker 4: priority and it's the pedestal of success.
- 31:57Speaker 3: And it's and it couldn't be further from the truth.
- 32:00Speaker 2: You know.
- 32:01Speaker 3: It's just it's very superficial.
- 32:04Speaker 4: It really doesn't get into the the deep part of
- 32:09Speaker 4: your soul, you know, so what you look like on
- 32:11Speaker 4: the outside, it's it's wasting away. It's it's the imperishable,
- 32:15Speaker 4: you know that all talks about. So it's and and
- 32:19Speaker 4: when that when they make that connection, which I've had
- 32:23Speaker 4: a couple of clients, when they when they see that, oh,
- 32:27Speaker 4: like there's something, there's something deeper than just what I
- 32:31Speaker 4: look like that there's a God that loves them and
- 32:35Speaker 4: created them and you know, knows them better than anyone else.
- 32:38Speaker 3: It's it's powerful m.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Hm and loves them regardless of their body fat percentage.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Right, changes the.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Whole perspective of what's important.
- 32:50Speaker 5: Yeah, you know what's wild is as I I see,
- 32:53Speaker 5: I see the vanity in the fitness industry as as
- 32:57Speaker 5: a spectrum.
- 32:58Speaker 2: So so you're your.
- 33:00Speaker 5: Locale is on one end of the spectrum. It's it's
- 33:03Speaker 5: the vanity of how I look. It's the vanity of
- 33:07Speaker 5: the self glorification.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:11Speaker 5: And when people think vanity vain, I'm vain. I care
- 33:16Speaker 5: about how I look and all this stuff. But vanity
- 33:19Speaker 5: doesn't mean that. Vanity means time and energy spent in
- 33:24Speaker 5: a way that won't last. Time and energy spent in
- 33:27Speaker 5: a way that's not eternal, Time and energy spent in
- 33:29Speaker 5: a way that that will dissipate, and fade away. Right,
- 33:32Speaker 5: that's what vanity means. So I'm actually on the other
- 33:35Speaker 5: end of the spectrum here in Arkansas. Arkansas is the
- 33:38Speaker 5: third fat est state in the nation. And so yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 33:43Speaker 5: so we wrestle with diabetes and obesity and all that stuff.
- 33:47Speaker 5: And what's really interesting is is this is actually part
- 33:49Speaker 5: of the Bible belt. There are a lot of believers here,
- 33:52Speaker 5: but they see fitness often not everybody, but often they
- 33:56Speaker 5: see fitness as a vain pursuit for the same reason.
- 34:00Speaker 5: Just describe, Right, So I don't need to lift weights,
- 34:03Speaker 5: I don't need to go for runs. I don't need
- 34:04Speaker 5: to watch what I eat because I'm not trying to
- 34:06Speaker 5: look like Hollywood, Right, I'm not trying like isn't that vain?
- 34:10Speaker 5: Isn't that vanity? And so what's interesting is is in
- 34:13Speaker 5: my neck of the woods, I'm preaching stewardship because in
- 34:17Speaker 5: both cases, the goal is to take vanity out of fitness.
- 34:20Speaker 5: Like it's not because of how you look, It's because
- 34:22Speaker 5: God made you and he loves you. And I want
- 34:24Speaker 5: you to take good care of yourself and be strong
- 34:27Speaker 5: and do that regardless of how you look in the mirror. Right,
- 34:31Speaker 5: And so you can be at peace. That's that's your
- 34:33Speaker 5: end of the spectrum. On my end of the spectrum,
- 34:35Speaker 5: it's like, hey, God gave you this body, and I
- 34:38Speaker 5: know you're not trying to look like Hollywood, but let's
- 34:40Speaker 5: make the.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Most of it. Let's let's lift, let's be let's.
- 34:44Speaker 5: Be capable and strong for our grandkids. Let's let's be
- 34:47Speaker 5: willing and ready and prepared to serve others. I loved
- 34:50Speaker 5: in your article where you're like, hey, you know, lifting weights,
- 34:52Speaker 5: you never know when you might have to help somebody
- 34:54Speaker 5: who's slightly weaker than you. Be ready, you know, be
- 34:57Speaker 5: ready to lift a couch, be ready to carry somebody's grocery,
- 35:00Speaker 5: be ready to punch some dude in the alleyway, Who's
- 35:03Speaker 5: who's you know, trying to take advantage of a young lady?
- 35:06Speaker 5: Like be ready, be ready, you never know? And and
- 35:09Speaker 5: God made our body.
- 35:11Speaker 2: To be ready.
- 35:13Speaker 5: There's a there's a readiness to to the way that
- 35:15Speaker 5: He made our body. And one of the things I
- 35:18Speaker 5: love about training is no matter what level of fitness
- 35:21Speaker 5: you're at, you can always be a little bit better.
- 35:25Speaker 5: You could always he could always steward that a little better.
- 35:28Speaker 5: I have a have a client I'm working with right now.
- 35:30Speaker 5: When we started working together, he couldn't get out of
- 35:33Speaker 5: his chair, so like like, that's that I mean, that
- 35:37Speaker 5: was his his world.
- 35:38Speaker 2: That was that was what he's wrestling with.
- 35:40Speaker 5: And you know, for this guy, he's not trying to
- 35:42Speaker 5: jump over small toddlers in a single bound. The let's
- 35:47Speaker 5: earn a six pack ship his saleed. You know, he's
- 35:49Speaker 5: just I say, he's trying to finish. Well, that's the
- 35:53Speaker 5: that's his fitness goal, you know. And and so when
- 35:56Speaker 5: we started working together, he couldn't do a lot. You know,
- 36:00Speaker 5: lifts are out of the question for him at the moment.
- 36:02Speaker 5: But but getting to where he can walk all the
- 36:06Speaker 5: way down his driveway and back without pain is like
- 36:10Speaker 5: a huge goal. But it is part of the that's
- 36:13Speaker 5: something I can't do yet that I can train toward.
- 36:17Speaker 5: And and that's that's what stewardship's about. That's how you
- 36:19Speaker 5: take vanity out of fitness. As you notice, you notice
- 36:22Speaker 5: how God made you and why he made you, and
- 36:24Speaker 5: then you you steward your body accordingly. So so you
- 36:29Speaker 5: being on on one end of the spectrum and me
- 36:31Speaker 5: being on the other end of the spectrum of the
- 36:33Speaker 5: vanity of fitness. I love having this conversation because because
- 36:36Speaker 5: regardless of where our listeners are, whether you're you wrestle
- 36:39Speaker 5: with the vanity side of of looking in the mirror
- 36:41Speaker 5: and wanting to look a certain way, or if you're
- 36:44Speaker 5: on the on the the gluttony and sloth side of vanity. Ah,
- 36:48Speaker 5: I don't need this fitness stuff. That's extra. There's no
- 36:50Speaker 5: reason for that Hollywood garbage.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Uh.
- 36:53Speaker 5: Regardless, the answer is is stewardship and giving God your
- 36:59Speaker 5: be So so I was curious if you had anything
- 37:03Speaker 5: to add to that before we talk about your upcoming book.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Oh no, I completely one hundred percent agree. It's it's
- 37:10Speaker 4: finding that that the narrow path right, not falling into
- 37:14Speaker 4: the ditch of either either side, because yeah, either side
- 37:19Speaker 4: is leading to misery ultimately. So so yeah, just sticking
- 37:25Speaker 4: sticking to And I think you hit it on the
- 37:28Speaker 4: head with serving others. If your focus is on serving others,
- 37:32Speaker 4: and I believe there's studies out there, you would know
- 37:36Speaker 4: more than me. I believe there's studies out there that
- 37:38Speaker 4: you can completely change your outlook of life and depression
- 37:42Speaker 4: and all that stuff just by putting others first and thinking, Okay,
- 37:46Speaker 4: how can I use what God has given me to
- 37:49Speaker 4: serve others.
- 37:51Speaker 3: So so that's that's a.
- 37:53Speaker 4: Good way to get out of that trap of the
- 37:55Speaker 4: vanity or the you know, neglect of your body.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Yes.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Yes, there's a fascinating book called Spark, The Revolutionary New
- 38:06Speaker 5: Science of Exercise in the Brain. And in this book,
- 38:09Speaker 5: the psychiatrist doctor John Rady is exploring the research with
- 38:13Speaker 5: regard to exercise as a as A as an actual
- 38:18Speaker 5: prescriptive treatment for things like dementia, Alzheimer's ADHD, and the
- 38:24Speaker 5: lot with regard to many different treatable mental illnesses. And
- 38:28Speaker 5: so so that said, one of the case studies in
- 38:30Speaker 5: there was about sister Bernadette. And I'm not going to
- 38:33Speaker 5: share the whole case study here, but basically it's a nun.
- 38:36Speaker 5: She's in her i want to say, in her early
- 38:38Speaker 5: eighties when she dies and she donated her body to science,
- 38:43Speaker 5: and what the researchers found was a brain riddled with Alzheimer's.
- 38:49Speaker 5: But in her day to day life, she she was serving,
- 38:52Speaker 5: she was teaching kids, she was helping people in on
- 38:57Speaker 5: hospice treatment who are younger than her. She was, you knowing,
- 39:01Speaker 5: being there and with them and stuff. And until the
- 39:03Speaker 5: day she died. She never exhibited any symptoms of Alzheimer's
- 39:08Speaker 5: the but the brain after the fact post mortem, the
- 39:13Speaker 5: researchers were like, what that like, this doesn't make any sense.
- 39:16Speaker 5: How can you have a brain that's so ate up
- 39:18Speaker 5: like this? But nobody in her life ever reported that
- 39:22Speaker 5: she was wrestling with forgetfulness or forgetting where she was at.
- 39:25Speaker 5: And the research was concluded in this particular case study
- 39:28Speaker 5: that her active lifestyle of serving others her brain just
- 39:33Speaker 5: found a way.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Her brain just found a way to make it happen.
- 39:37Speaker 5: And well, I mean, isn't when you care about something,
- 39:40Speaker 5: or you love something, or you love somebody, don't you
- 39:43Speaker 5: just find a way when they need something from you?
- 39:46Speaker 5: Like your your fourteen year old dog right first thing
- 39:48Speaker 5: in the morning. Carrying a fourteen year old dog down
- 39:50Speaker 5: the stairs is not exactly something. You're like, yeay, I
- 39:53Speaker 5: get to do this, but she needs.
- 39:55Speaker 2: It right right, and so do it. And you just
- 39:59Speaker 2: do it.
- 40:00Speaker 5: Your your biceps are all the better for it, like exactly,
- 40:05Speaker 5: that's that's exactly right, that's exactly right. And and you
- 40:07Speaker 5: know Christ's life of Services is like that. Christ's life
- 40:11Speaker 5: of Service teaches your body, mind and spirit to rise
- 40:15Speaker 5: to the occasion. And what's so crazy is is when
- 40:18Speaker 5: you're serving other people, you don't you don't generally think
- 40:21Speaker 5: about whether or not you can. You just do and
- 40:25Speaker 5: and well, well that that teaches, That teaches our minds
- 40:28Speaker 5: and bodies a lot.
- 40:30Speaker 3: It totally does.
- 40:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's kind of it's it's very god to
- 40:35Speaker 4: have us built that way.
- 40:37Speaker 3: It makes sense.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Amen.
- 40:39Speaker 5: Yeah, almost miraculous, even one might say so. So I
- 40:45Speaker 5: want to highlight so you just wrote a book, and
- 40:48Speaker 5: where are you in this author's journey? Because I just
- 40:51Speaker 5: wrote a book, And I got to tell you you
- 40:52Speaker 5: seem a little less adhd than I do, or maybe
- 40:54Speaker 5: you're just hiding it really well, But but I writing
- 40:58Speaker 5: a book is the hardest thing I've ever done in
- 41:00Speaker 5: my life. And I have two kids in like being
- 41:03Speaker 5: a dad to them was also very hard and meaningful,
- 41:05Speaker 5: but very very difficult to sit down and make myself
- 41:09Speaker 5: write something in sequence in cereal that makes sense to
- 41:13Speaker 5: not just me, but anybody else.
- 41:15Speaker 2: So that publication process is hard.
- 41:19Speaker 5: It's hard to write, it's hard to edit, it's hard
- 41:22Speaker 5: to it's hard to design, it's hard to publish.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Where are you in this journey with your book.
- 41:30Speaker 3: I'm at the very beginning stages.
- 41:32Speaker 4: The book is completed, it's a completed work in progress.
- 41:37Speaker 3: It's currently in the editing stage right now.
- 41:41Speaker 4: And the writing part for me wasn't the hard part.
- 41:46Speaker 4: It's a fiction book, so for me, it was therapeutic
- 41:50Speaker 4: and it's fun. I love to create stories. But this
- 41:54Speaker 4: is the part where I'm finding the struggle because now
- 41:58Speaker 4: I feel like this is where the real work comes in.
- 42:00Speaker 4: And so sitting down editing, cutting things out, correcting things,
- 42:06Speaker 4: the nitty gritty stuff, and then.
- 42:10Speaker 3: You're you're way ahead of the game from me.
- 42:13Speaker 4: But the publication process I'm completely green on, so I
- 42:17Speaker 4: don't even I'm kind of just going wherever God leaves
- 42:21Speaker 4: me in this process. So he gave me, I feel
- 42:24Speaker 4: like he gave me the story. So I'm just just
- 42:27Speaker 4: kind of like our what we were talking about with
- 42:28Speaker 4: our bodies.
- 42:29Speaker 3: I'm just trying to be a good steward of it
- 42:31Speaker 3: and just kind of keep plugging away at it and
- 42:37Speaker 3: just kind of see where he goes with it.
- 42:40Speaker 4: And uh yeah, So I'm I'm at the early, very
- 42:43Speaker 4: early stages.
- 42:44Speaker 5: But are you willing to share a working title or
- 42:47Speaker 5: is that is that not okay yet.
- 42:49Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's it's uh, it's definitely working title. I
- 42:52Speaker 4: don't I don't know if it'll stay. But it's called Lean,
- 42:54Speaker 4: Lean through the Fire, and uh, it's it's basically about
- 42:59Speaker 4: trials and tribulations that we all go through, believers and
- 43:03Speaker 4: non believers.
- 43:04Speaker 3: It's just part of being in a fallen world.
- 43:06Speaker 4: And how one woman goes through different trials and tribulations
- 43:14Speaker 4: knowing God and has Jesus as her savior, and the
- 43:17Speaker 4: other woman denies that God exists and that you.
- 43:22Speaker 3: Meet and.
- 43:24Speaker 4: Become friends, and just how they approach life differently with
- 43:29Speaker 4: those two different worldviews.
- 43:31Speaker 3: So, and I want to give too.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Much a way, but sure, yeah, yeah, you say, you
- 43:36Speaker 2: say so.
- 43:37Speaker 5: I love this because what many might not know about
- 43:40Speaker 5: training is you work with people from every walk of life,
- 43:45Speaker 5: every belief system, every you know, traumatic background, mental illness,
- 43:52Speaker 5: all the stuff. Like I've worked with with CEOs of
- 43:55Speaker 5: multi billion dollar companies. I've been with them while they
- 43:59Speaker 5: sweat and cry on the leg press, you know. And
- 44:02Speaker 5: and then and then I've worked with the uh, the
- 44:06Speaker 5: the teacher of fourth graders who's working to lose one
- 44:09Speaker 5: hundred pounds, who's also sweating and crying on the leg press.
- 44:12Speaker 5: Interestingly enough, just about completely different things, right, and and
- 44:17Speaker 5: it's so crazy.
- 44:18Speaker 2: It's so crazy.
- 44:19Speaker 5: You get you get to see so many different stories,
- 44:24Speaker 5: You get to see how so many different stories, and
- 44:26Speaker 5: you also get to be a part of them because
- 44:28Speaker 5: as a trainer, I've had I've had people tell me
- 44:30Speaker 5: things that they didn't even tell their spouse. You know,
- 44:32Speaker 5: it's like like, like, why am I even saying this
- 44:35Speaker 5: to you right now? I'm like, I don't know, man,
- 44:37Speaker 5: or just we're next set of dumb bell rows. So
- 44:45Speaker 5: so it sounds like you've you've found a way to
- 44:47Speaker 5: to take some of the stories you've come up to
- 44:50Speaker 5: and kind of condense and distill them in a way
- 44:53Speaker 5: that that was fun to write, but also it sounds
- 44:55Speaker 5: like it'd be a lot of fun to read.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's it's fiction. So it's like a contemporary drama.
- 45:03Speaker 4: So there's definitely some some humor in it, but there's
- 45:06Speaker 4: some tough issues in there as well. But but yeah,
- 45:10Speaker 4: my I think just my experience over the years being
- 45:14Speaker 4: a personal trainer and dealing with all kinds of people,
- 45:17Speaker 4: like you said, very high level executives to stay at
- 45:23Speaker 4: home moms. You know, across the board, everyone has a story,
- 45:28Speaker 4: which also is super fascinating to me because as a
- 45:32Speaker 4: as a writer and an author, I'm sure you experienced this,
- 45:35Speaker 4: but it's just that innate desire to create, which I
- 45:40Speaker 4: think you know.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Comes from ultimately the creator.
- 45:42Speaker 4: So it's just kind of cool to think of, Oh,
- 45:44Speaker 4: I'm I'm driving the story and these characters, and oh,
- 45:49Speaker 4: I'm going to make her go through this right now.
- 45:51Speaker 4: But that's because she's gonna see, you know, the good
- 45:55Speaker 4: in it eventually, you know. So uh, And I think
- 46:00Speaker 4: about how God has weaved all of our stories and
- 46:03Speaker 4: the people we meet and the connections and how we're
- 46:06Speaker 4: just intertwined, you know, with each other for different reasons.
- 46:11Speaker 4: It's just very fascinating and inspiring. So I think that's
- 46:16Speaker 4: why I love fiction, because I think it reflects the
- 46:20Speaker 4: beauty of God and his stories through all of us.
- 46:26Speaker 5: Well said, thank you for that. Well, I'm excited to
- 46:29Speaker 5: read it. That'll be awesome. And I know it's not
- 46:33Speaker 5: out yet, but you do have a newsletter that people
- 46:37Speaker 5: can get connected to, and a subtect that you add
- 46:40Speaker 5: to regularly and whatnot.
- 46:42Speaker 2: I've got a link in the show notes below for
- 46:44Speaker 2: anybody who wants to follow your work.
- 46:46Speaker 5: I really loved and kudos to you. I think I
- 46:50Speaker 5: said this on social media, but I actually in getting
- 46:53Speaker 5: to know you before we get to actually have a conversation,
- 46:56Speaker 5: it's I guess you can call that creeping, but that's
- 46:59Speaker 5: what just what you do when you do podcasts and
- 47:01Speaker 5: interviews and research doing research, Well, when you meet people electronically,
- 47:05Speaker 5: you know, you can't really high five and and whatnot.
- 47:08Speaker 5: But but I thought this was was brilliant. You have
- 47:12Speaker 5: a video of you doing deadlifts on Instagram with you
- 47:16Speaker 5: reading an excerpt from your upcoming book, and I thought
- 47:20Speaker 5: that was brilliant because it's like, hey, if this is
- 47:22Speaker 5: something that resonates with you, if you if if the
- 47:25Speaker 5: whole workout thing in conversations between these two ladies is
- 47:30Speaker 5: interesting and informative for you, then then you definitely want
- 47:33Speaker 5: to get connected to my books. So I'm going to
- 47:35Speaker 5: encourage my listeners if if they've resonated with this conversation,
- 47:38Speaker 5: especially if you're a lady, especially if you're wrestling with
- 47:41Speaker 5: with real life faith and fitness and everything in between, uh,
- 47:46Speaker 5: that that I'd encourage them to get connected to your
- 47:49Speaker 5: newsletter and I've got the link in the show notes.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Thank you, alex Yanad. That would be that would be awesome.
- 47:55Speaker 4: Yeah, as I'm building up my my writing, uh, I
- 47:59Speaker 4: guess career, I'm still going to be training, but it's.
- 48:02Speaker 3: Definitely a passion of mine.
- 48:05Speaker 4: So and I just wanted to encourage people and inspire
- 48:09Speaker 4: people to grow in their faith and get healthy in
- 48:13Speaker 4: all the ways and spiritually.
- 48:15Speaker 2: So I love it awesome.
- 48:19Speaker 5: So as we're wrapping up here because we're coming up
- 48:22Speaker 5: on time, you got a client to go train, I've
- 48:24Speaker 5: got to go get my workout in or I'm going
- 48:25Speaker 5: to go crazy before my boys get home. And so
- 48:28Speaker 5: as we're coming up on time here, I did want
- 48:30Speaker 5: to ask you just a couple of rapid fire questions
- 48:33Speaker 5: about fitness. What is one fitness industry myth that you
- 48:37Speaker 5: wish you could kill with extreme prejudice.
- 48:42Speaker 3: That weights make women bulky?
- 48:48Speaker 2: True? That true? That?
- 48:50Speaker 5: What would what truth would you replace that with? What
- 48:53Speaker 5: do weights actually do for women?
- 48:57Speaker 4: Weights actually build your metabolism, which allows you to eat
- 49:00Speaker 4: more and stay.
- 49:01Speaker 3: The same size. So that's a win for a lot
- 49:05Speaker 3: of people.
- 49:07Speaker 4: And in some ways it can make you denser or smaller,
- 49:11Speaker 4: so you might weigh a little bit more, so try
- 49:14Speaker 4: not to always go by the scale standard, but you
- 49:19Speaker 4: might fit better in your clothes and weigh five pounds heavier.
- 49:23Speaker 2: That's exactly right, That's exactly right.
- 49:25Speaker 5: My wife, she didn't do a lot of weight training
- 49:28Speaker 5: before we got together because she has sculliosis in her
- 49:32Speaker 5: back and so it always hurt her. And so I
- 49:35Speaker 5: like to joke, you know, you married a master level
- 49:37Speaker 5: trainer to get over your scoliosis problem. And you know, fine,
- 49:42Speaker 5: it's a give and take, right, But she will say
- 49:47Speaker 5: that at her at her level of fitness, she's in
- 49:51Speaker 5: her late thirties, as a mom of two, at her
- 49:54Speaker 5: level of fitness, she weighs more than she did in
- 49:56Speaker 5: her twenties, but she fits better in her clothes, she
- 50:01Speaker 5: feels better, she's stronger and more capable, which is necessary
- 50:05Speaker 5: when you're raising two rambunctious boys.
- 50:09Speaker 2: And so so I'm with you.
- 50:12Speaker 5: I would love to kill that with extreme prejudice, and
- 50:14Speaker 5: I would say to the ladies, guys, guys, come on, gals,
- 50:18Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying. Anyway, Sisters in Christ, weight
- 50:21Speaker 5: training makes you strong, It helps your hormones, it helps
- 50:25Speaker 5: your bone density and it's a marvelous, marvelous outlet for
- 50:29Speaker 5: you to explore your strength as a woman. Please do it.
- 50:33Speaker 5: It's not gonna make you bulky. That's definitely yeah, let's
- 50:37Speaker 5: kill that one. Thanks for that, Thanks for that, all right, right,
- 50:44Speaker 5: So so one more rapid fire question. That's what that's
- 50:47Speaker 5: what practical tip would you give somebody who feels like
- 50:50Speaker 5: they've failed in their in their fitness journey.
- 50:56Speaker 4: I would say, Well, for one, it's never over till
- 50:58Speaker 4: it's over. So I would say, if you feel like, uh,
- 51:04Speaker 4: you failed, you got to you gotta shrug it off
- 51:06Speaker 4: and and know that you're still here for a reason.
- 51:09Speaker 4: And so you need to, you know, to start by walking,
- 51:12Speaker 4: start small and then find the little victories.
- 51:16Speaker 2: And so.
- 51:19Speaker 4: You know, just start walking, start lifting small weights. Just
- 51:23Speaker 4: go step foot in a gym. You don't even have
- 51:25Speaker 4: to do anything. Just go walk around, you know, people
- 51:28Speaker 4: watch whatever whatever it is, just to get your feet
- 51:31Speaker 4: wet again.
- 51:32Speaker 3: But just just don't don't give up.
- 51:35Speaker 4: So, yeah, there's no real I don't believe that there's
- 51:38Speaker 4: failure if you've put in a genuine effort.
- 51:42Speaker 3: So and I tell clients all the.
- 51:45Speaker 4: Time that you know, maybe they're injured or they dropped off,
- 51:48Speaker 4: and then they come back, you know, months or years later,
- 51:51Speaker 4: and they feel like they have to start over. I
- 51:53Speaker 4: tell them there's no starting over. There's there's d tours.
- 51:57Speaker 4: But then you just get back, just get right back
- 51:59Speaker 4: on the road.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Mm hmmm hmm.
- 52:01Speaker 4: Everything, every every detour teaches a lesson.
- 52:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:08Speaker 5: Yeah, the only failure in fitness is muscle failure anyway,
- 52:10Speaker 5: and that's actually good.
- 52:15Speaker 3: It's just good to do once in a while.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Once in a while, right, not to failure every time.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Don't do that. Don't do that. No, I love that.
- 52:21Speaker 5: So I say something similar to individuals, which is, if
- 52:24Speaker 5: you're still here, God's not done with you yet exactly,
- 52:27Speaker 5: So you get to you get to keep keep striving
- 52:30Speaker 5: for for what it is He put you here, or
- 52:33Speaker 5: do thanks for that. I think that's that's great, that's
- 52:35Speaker 5: a great tip. So I want to make sure that
- 52:37Speaker 5: you have the last word, and then I want to
- 52:38Speaker 5: pray over you in your upcoming book and your ministry
- 52:42Speaker 5: and your practice. So, so what do you want to
- 52:44Speaker 5: make sure that the listeners hear from you before we
- 52:47Speaker 5: call it a.
- 52:47Speaker 3: Day, Just to incorporate God and to everything in your life.
- 52:55Speaker 4: So even going to the gym even you know, we
- 52:59Speaker 4: pray before me almos, so really incorporate him and you're
- 53:03Speaker 4: eating habit like everything.
- 53:04Speaker 3: It just makes life so much more fuller if.
- 53:07Speaker 4: You if you just remember that you have someone on
- 53:10Speaker 4: your side and that he loves you and he knows
- 53:12Speaker 4: you intimately, and it just makes life better. Just don't don't,
- 53:20Speaker 4: you know, don't take for granted the little things and
- 53:23Speaker 4: have God walk with you through those. So I think
- 53:27Speaker 4: it's easy to compartmentalize things in our faith, but it's
- 53:31Speaker 4: just life is so much richer if you can incorporate
- 53:34Speaker 4: Him and everything.
- 53:36Speaker 5: So well said, well said. What an encouraging conversation, Christina.
- 53:39Speaker 5: Thank you so much for the time and energy spent here.
- 53:42Speaker 2: Do you mind if I pray over you? Not at all?
- 53:44Speaker 4: No, thank you so much for having me. And I
- 53:45Speaker 4: think it's great what you're doing. And you know, keep
- 53:48Speaker 4: keep pressing ahead.
- 53:50Speaker 2: You got it. I won't stop, can't stop, won't stop.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Book.
- 53:53Speaker 4: I just pre ordered or I just got your book,
- 53:55Speaker 4: so oh sweet, I'm looking forward to reading it and
- 53:59Speaker 4: doing it, you know, the forty day daily devotional so
- 54:02Speaker 4: and then sharing it with.
- 54:04Speaker 5: Clients, and I can't wait to hear your thoughts. I
- 54:07Speaker 5: pray you get a lot out of it. That was
- 54:10Speaker 5: it was quite the work.
- 54:12Speaker 3: I bet so.
- 54:12Speaker 4: I'm I definitely look up to you, you know, finishing
- 54:16Speaker 4: it and doing that whole process.
- 54:17Speaker 3: So so thank you for having me. I really appreciate it.
- 54:21Speaker 2: You got it.
- 54:22Speaker 5: Let's pray, Father, God, thank you so much for this day.
- 54:24Speaker 5: Thank you for the opportunity to spend time with my
- 54:26Speaker 5: sister Christina, and thank you for the way that you're
- 54:28Speaker 5: using her in her good work working with clients on
- 54:31Speaker 5: the fitness floor and writing. God, I pray that you
- 54:34Speaker 5: will be with her in each session. I pray that
- 54:36Speaker 5: you will put healing in her hands, that you would
- 54:39Speaker 5: put joy in her heart. And I pray that the
- 54:41Speaker 5: way that she conducts herself rubs off on her clients
- 54:44Speaker 5: and is contagious, especially for those who don't know you
- 54:48Speaker 5: and want to know what's different about the way Christina
- 54:51Speaker 5: is running her life. And Lord, I pray that you
- 54:54Speaker 5: would give her the words she needs as she writes
- 54:57Speaker 5: with her book, give her the strength to edit and
- 55:00Speaker 5: to separate wheat from chaff. I pray that you'll help
- 55:03Speaker 5: her to prune things because I know how when you
- 55:06Speaker 5: write phrases down and they really matter to you, but
- 55:09Speaker 5: they don't quite fit with the rest of the narrative. Lord,
- 55:12Speaker 5: I pray that you would give her the wisdom she
- 55:14Speaker 5: needs to speak the language that so many need to hear.
- 55:17Speaker 2: God.
- 55:18Speaker 5: I also pray for blessing and peace over her business
- 55:21Speaker 5: and her husband's business. I pray Lord that they would
- 55:24Speaker 5: work well together and that they would make an impact
- 55:26Speaker 5: on the world around them that tends toward vanity. I
- 55:30Speaker 5: also pray that you would help them to steward their
- 55:32Speaker 5: bodies well and to be a light in a dark place.
- 55:35Speaker 2: We love you, Lord in Jesus' name.
