- 0:00Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 0:00Speaker 2: What's up.
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Eric, I'm Steven and we are from the band
- 0:04Speaker 1: House of Protection.
- 0:05Speaker 3: We are on tour with Poppy and bad Omens and
- 0:09Speaker 3: it's dope.
- 0:12Speaker 4: Good morning, gentlemen, thanks for joining us today. Thank you
- 0:17Speaker 4: no good to be here, as you.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Say, House of Protection in Australia right now for Runham
- 0:22Speaker 2: shows with bad Omens.
- 0:23Speaker 4: So how you feel about the shows?
- 0:25Speaker 2: I can imagine to see me your first trip playing
- 0:27Speaker 2: here as this band.
- 0:29Speaker 1: It's been awesome so far. Honestly, we didn't really know
- 0:32Speaker 1: what to expect, especially walking up because bad Omens audience
- 0:37Speaker 1: looks very much like a bad Omen's audience, like they
- 0:39Speaker 1: are there for that band. But they've been really receptive.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And it's cool to be on such an eclectic tour
- 0:46Speaker 1: because it doesn't feel competitive. It just feels like everybody's
- 0:49Speaker 1: expressing themselves, honestly, and that's always a cool situation to
- 0:52Speaker 1: walk into.
- 0:54Speaker 2: So people here, I wouldn't not have seen this band
- 0:57Speaker 2: live before, so describe to a certificate line upset.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Well, we've only played a few shows, so we're still
- 1:05Speaker 3: kind of figuring that out too. But one thing you
- 1:07Speaker 3: can definitely rest assured about is we you know, we
- 1:12Speaker 3: come with the energy, We come with positive vibes. We
- 1:15Speaker 3: want people to not feel like you have to you know.
- 1:19Speaker 3: It's it's a very eclectic experience, you know, like it
- 1:26Speaker 3: gets heavy, it's biby, it's dancy, you know, like it's
- 1:31Speaker 3: it's a lot of different things. So I hope that
- 1:34Speaker 3: that brings a lot of different people, you know, like
- 1:38Speaker 3: it's but I think the the core thing that connects
- 1:42Speaker 3: all that is just high energy, you.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Know, right, Yeah, But I was unfamiliar with the band,
- 1:49Speaker 2: but I some of you it's formed out to leave
- 1:51Speaker 2: it a fab three three three. But tell us a
- 1:53Speaker 2: bit more about how it came about, Like how did
- 1:55Speaker 2: this project come about?
- 1:58Speaker 1: Me and Steve had jammed to get there for a
- 2:00Speaker 1: long time while we were in Fever, and there's just
- 2:03Speaker 1: a lot of music we were writing that like wasn't
- 2:06Speaker 1: making it for that for one reason or another. So
- 2:08Speaker 1: when we decided that our time was up in that band,
- 2:10Speaker 1: it just felt like the natural next step was to
- 2:13Speaker 1: do something together. So about a week after we quit,
- 2:20Speaker 1: I had gone to get married, and then me and
- 2:23Speaker 1: my wife eloped in Europe, and then when I got back,
- 2:25Speaker 1: we immediately started writing with the guitarist of my other band,
- 2:29Speaker 1: Night Versus, and wrote its Supposed to Hurt, and then
- 2:32Speaker 1: from that we met up with Jordan and he produced
- 2:35Speaker 1: the rest of the EP with us.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You're both share vocal gen is in this, so is
- 2:40Speaker 2: that the first time either of you have actually had
- 2:43Speaker 2: that role of lead vocalists?
- 2:45Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, we never even tried it. It's it's fun to
- 2:49Speaker 1: do it with with your best friend at the same time,
- 2:51Speaker 1: so you don't have to worry about sounding worse than
- 2:53Speaker 1: the other one. You just kind of figured it out together.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Straight up, how did you guy? The first few times?
- 2:58Speaker 2: I like you it must have been nerve ra like
- 3:00Speaker 2: it as much fun as it is, it's gotta gotta
- 3:03Speaker 2: be nervy, it is, but.
- 3:06Speaker 1: To get on stage and sync. Yeah yeah, But like
- 3:10Speaker 1: I don't know, man. Also, there's a certain point in
- 3:13Speaker 1: your life where you just have to say, fuck, it
- 3:14Speaker 1: is gonna be fun. See what happens, right, attitude harder
- 3:18Speaker 1: parts to sing than I do. I'm gonna say Steve's
- 3:21Speaker 1: vocals are a bit harder than mine.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So how does that work out? Who does what vocal parts?
- 3:26Speaker 2: I guess because like I say, you're sort of you're
- 3:28Speaker 2: coming into it fresh and new.
- 3:30Speaker 1: So if it involves real singing like holding out notes,
- 3:34Speaker 1: that's usually Steve. And if it's just shouting, then that's
- 3:38Speaker 1: when I'll take it.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Sometimes over real, Like your music blends hardcore and punk
- 3:45Speaker 5: with electronica, Like it's three genres that don't often go
- 3:48Speaker 5: well together, Like in the creative process, how difficult is
- 3:52Speaker 5: it to blend those three styles together to bring some
- 3:54Speaker 5: cohesive out.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Mm hm.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I feel like it's not as hard because we listen
- 4:02Speaker 1: to a lot of it, so you're not mixing elements
- 4:05Speaker 1: that you don't kind of know what to do with.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I think it's a lot harder to mixed genres that
- 4:10Speaker 1: you're not super familiar with. So fortunately me and Steve
- 4:14Speaker 1: we listen to a lot of the same bands and
- 4:17Speaker 1: artists and the range is pretty wide. But it does
- 4:20Speaker 1: include everything from really heavy music to you know, fast
- 4:24Speaker 1: drum 'd bass, and that that sort of gives us
- 4:27Speaker 1: a like a common ground to pull from that makes
- 4:30Speaker 1: it really fun to collaborate.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Now you're a listed w EP galore last September Mate,
- 4:35Speaker 2: then there's only six tracks on that, so I want
- 4:37Speaker 2: to run through each of them individually. Tell us a
- 4:40Speaker 2: bit more about the song or the musically or what
- 4:42Speaker 2: it's about, or both if you feel like it.
- 4:44Speaker 4: So first up, we got Pulling.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Teeth banger that is an out the Gate heater. When
- 4:54Speaker 3: we were writing that, it was just like, Okay, this
- 4:56Speaker 3: is we need. We need the audience to bounce, jump jig,
- 5:03Speaker 3: and I feel like we really like we accomplished that
- 5:07Speaker 3: with this one. Chorus is big, simple catchy, you know
- 5:11Speaker 3: what I mean, and just the heavy part it's not
- 5:16Speaker 3: even halftime, but it still smacks. I feel like, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 3: it's just pulling teeth.
- 5:25Speaker 2: You know. There's an interesting story with the music video
- 5:30Speaker 2: that goes along with it too. Can you tell us
- 5:32Speaker 2: about that?
- 5:33Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so the video We went to India, So,
- 5:38Speaker 3: like eleven ish years ago, I've watched this documentary on
- 5:43Speaker 3: IFC about the Well of Death and how it pertains
- 5:48Speaker 3: to the culture over there and how it's just like
- 5:51Speaker 3: such a spectacle and the stepifying motorcycle and car drivers
- 5:57Speaker 3: essentially drive on the walls and a circle and this
- 6:00Speaker 3: giant well, and I was like, man, it would be
- 6:03Speaker 3: really sick to see a band play in the middle
- 6:05Speaker 3: of that one day. Oh well, I just there. I
- 6:09Speaker 3: was not in a band where that would make sense
- 6:11Speaker 3: or could like implement that, but now I am. So
- 6:15Speaker 3: we went to India and after traveling for what seemed
- 6:20Speaker 3: like one hundred years, we got Seemed as well, and
- 6:23Speaker 3: it was just so much bigger than we thought it
- 6:25Speaker 3: was going to be. And it was just gnarally like
- 6:28Speaker 3: just being in the center of that while these guys
- 6:30Speaker 3: are just driving on the walls and it was really hot.
- 6:34Speaker 3: It was just it was just such a life experience,
- 6:36Speaker 3: such an experience like I you know, like it's one
- 6:40Speaker 3: of those things that as you're doing it, you're like, wait,
- 6:44Speaker 3: this is like actually like crazy dangerous definitely, but it
- 6:49Speaker 3: was but it was great, Like I really, I am
- 6:51Speaker 3: glad we were able to do something like that.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It's a whole new meaning to the term driving me
- 6:56Speaker 2: up the wall. Anyway, fact, all right, next up, you
- 7:03Speaker 2: got Fuse hmmm.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Use was the last one that we wrote on the EP,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and I think what was cool about it is we
- 7:14Speaker 1: had sort of done like five different types of songs
- 7:18Speaker 1: and when we got to the end, we're like, well,
- 7:19Speaker 1: what does this need? And between us Jordan and Nick,
- 7:23Speaker 1: I feel like that song was like a mix of everything.
- 7:27Speaker 1: So it was I don't know, it was just cool
- 7:29Speaker 1: to have something that could sort of like recap everything
- 7:31Speaker 1: as far as the writing process went. And the video
- 7:34Speaker 1: for that was the first time that we actually got
- 7:36Speaker 1: to play any of our music with an audience there.
- 7:38Speaker 1: So that was probably the most fun to film, just
- 7:41Speaker 1: because we got to share the energy with other people.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yeah. Nice. Then you got learn to Forget.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Man, Learn and Forget is like bro that song is
- 7:53Speaker 3: like just a straight up it's like it's like hardcore influence.
- 8:01Speaker 3: I think it's probably our most hardcore influenced song. Catchy
- 8:06Speaker 3: singing chorus, it's just like, I.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Don't know, it's fun.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I don't know what it was going to be like.
- 8:13Speaker 1: It feels like home. That's like a lot of what
- 8:15Speaker 1: we grew up playing. So it's good to have something
- 8:17Speaker 1: in the set that you know, you're not sitting there
- 8:20Speaker 1: thinking super hard. Where some of these when we're trying
- 8:22Speaker 1: to sing and play parts and do all this other stuff,
- 8:24Speaker 1: it's a lot of concentrating. So I think it's just
- 8:26Speaker 1: like a good break for us to just get to
- 8:29Speaker 1: enjoy it live nice.
- 8:32Speaker 4: And then there's Being One.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I mean Being One came about in the studio with
- 8:40Speaker 1: Jordan and I think part of what was so cool
- 8:43Speaker 1: about that was his ability to get so much out
- 8:47Speaker 1: of Steve's voice because we had been writing for a
- 8:50Speaker 1: year prior and we had done music similar to that,
- 8:55Speaker 1: but we never really knew what to do with the
- 8:56Speaker 1: vocals because the only thing we'd pulled off was like
- 8:58Speaker 1: heavier stuff. So I think that was just a really
- 9:01Speaker 1: cool experience because it sort of gave us an idea
- 9:04Speaker 1: of a new direction that we could possibly venture into
- 9:07Speaker 1: when we're writing. And again, a huge part of that
- 9:10Speaker 1: was Jordan really showing the potential of what Steve could
- 9:14Speaker 1: do with his voice.
- 9:16Speaker 4: And we've got it's supposed to hear it.
- 9:20Speaker 3: That was song one that was the beginning of the war.
- 9:23Speaker 1: That was first day. The verse in the first verse
- 9:28Speaker 1: is like us improvising, Like we didn't even end up
- 9:30Speaker 1: retracking it, so like we had to kind of figure
- 9:33Speaker 1: out what we were saying because it was so like
- 9:36Speaker 1: we had like decipher it based off of what came out.
- 9:38Speaker 1: But it's what we close with. Honestly, as much as
- 9:42Speaker 1: I love everything, there's something about that being the first
- 9:44Speaker 1: time that we heard our voices and we're okay with
- 9:46Speaker 1: it that makes that my favorite to play. It just
- 9:49Speaker 1: feels like sort of like the starting point for everything.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Hice and then better Off is the fount of one.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Better Off was like a I've that I've always wanted
- 10:03Speaker 3: to like have in a band, Like I'd love songs
- 10:08Speaker 3: like that, the electronica, big sort of heavy, melodic, crooney thing,
- 10:14Speaker 3: like I've always wanted to try my hand at that,
- 10:16Speaker 3: and to finally be able to do it in this
- 10:18Speaker 3: band was really it just felt really good. And yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 3: it's just I think it came out way heavier than
- 10:29Speaker 3: I thought it was going to be. Like that breakdown
- 10:31Speaker 3: at the end is like crushing, and I don't know,
- 10:38Speaker 3: I just love it. It's a it's a challenging song
- 10:41Speaker 3: to sing sometimes just because it's like just like all
- 10:45Speaker 3: over the place vocally, but I think it's it's one
- 10:50Speaker 3: of my favorites for sure.
- 10:52Speaker 4: All Right, No, it's goes now.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I know twenty twenty five is just getting started. So
- 10:56Speaker 2: what he's got planned for us for the rest of
- 10:57Speaker 2: the year, you got to map.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Dad, Yeah, we got We've written a bunch of stuff
- 11:01Speaker 1: and then we have booked a ton of dates. So
- 11:06Speaker 1: it's more just trying to figure out when each of
- 11:09Speaker 1: those things happens because anything that we right requires us
- 11:11Speaker 1: to also work on the music video, and we're very
- 11:15Speaker 1: hands on with our director Kevin that we did all
- 11:17Speaker 1: the previous ones with. So yeah, I mean there's a
- 11:20Speaker 1: lot of stuff going on. We're just figuring out when
- 11:22Speaker 1: each of those things is actually going to be out
- 11:25Speaker 1: to the public.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Fantasic Gard So I know you's got a busy schedule, Lie,
- 11:28Speaker 2: so I appreciate you taking time out of chat with
- 11:30Speaker 2: us and enjoy the rest of your time in Australia
- 11:32Speaker 2: and hopefully we see out here on a headline intro
- 11:34Speaker 2: one day soon.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Oh, we gotta do that.
