- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the UConn Football Coaches Show on the radio.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Jason Candle, I'm Mike Crispino and the Huskies go to
- 0:06Speaker 1: two and one. Nice bounce back win, coach. You never know,
- 0:10Speaker 1: you lose at home. That's never good. And then you
- 0:13Speaker 1: have to travel 1300 miles to play in, you know,
- 0:17Speaker 1: 99 degree weather. As the week progressed in practice, you
- 0:21Speaker 1: kept saying, let's get better. How do you analyze that
- 0:25Speaker 1: as the week goes on? Can you tell that the
- 0:27Speaker 1: team is getting better?
- 0:30Speaker 2: I mean, I think that you can really feel guys
- 0:34Speaker 2: putting time and energy into the fundamental things. And, hey, look,
- 0:38Speaker 2: like no matter what sport it is, I mean, drills
- 0:40Speaker 2: and things that you do, those things have to solve
- 0:43Speaker 2: game day problems or you're doing the wrong stuff. So,
- 0:47Speaker 2: you know, our guys, I think, have done a good
- 0:48Speaker 2: job from a coaching standpoint of pulling off the tape
- 0:51Speaker 2: what they feel like need to be corrected, really maybe
- 0:54Speaker 2: trying to highlight some of the things that we've done
- 0:56Speaker 2: well and addressing them at practice. You only get so
- 0:58Speaker 2: many hours and so many minutes during the week. some
- 1:01Speaker 2: of the problems and some of the issues may be long-term,
- 1:03Speaker 2: they have to be long-term solutions, but the things we
- 1:05Speaker 2: can solve in the short term, you know, I think
- 1:07Speaker 2: our guys, I give our guys a lot of credit.
- 1:09Speaker 2: They've done a good job putting attention to detail to
- 1:10Speaker 2: that and, and, uh, fixing them. Now, are we, are
- 1:14Speaker 2: we a finished product by absolutely not so much more
- 1:18Speaker 2: to do. So, you know, a long road ahead, but, uh,
- 1:21Speaker 2: you know, to be able to handle an adverse adversity
- 1:23Speaker 2: there and have a tough week and, you know, um,
- 1:27Speaker 2: lick our wounds a little bit and come back and
- 1:28Speaker 2: bounce back and handle the trip. As you mentioned, it
- 1:30Speaker 2: was real proud of our team.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yeah. What does that tell you about your team? If,
- 1:34Speaker 1: if anything specific in the early stages of your season,
- 1:38Speaker 1: we're still in September here, you've only had three games,
- 1:40Speaker 1: but you know, you get bounced in your own place.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You come back, you hit the road and you, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: you play well.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think it, it, it tells you
- 1:48Speaker 2: you have in the majority, it tells you you have
- 1:51Speaker 2: the right guys, you know, now, you know, does that, Again,
- 1:56Speaker 2: is that the first quarter of the season? Does that
- 1:58Speaker 2: continue to reproduce itself at the end? I mean, like
- 2:01Speaker 2: I said, there's still a lot of football left to
- 2:04Speaker 2: play and a long road here to still track on.
- 2:06Speaker 2: So we've got to keep our foot on the gas.
- 2:08Speaker 2: We've got to handle success now. Like we handled adversity
- 2:12Speaker 2: last week. We've got to go win a game after
- 2:14Speaker 2: we've won one because we haven't done that yet this year.
- 2:16Speaker 2: So a new set of challenges and a new week.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Looking at what happened at Southern Miss, what offensively first?
- 2:24Speaker 1: We'll get to the defense. A couple of nice turnovers,
- 2:27Speaker 1: which was exciting. But the running game was better this week.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You had Sincere Bowers running for, I think, a career-high
- 2:36Speaker 1: amount of yardage for him. And you looked like you
- 2:39Speaker 1: were moving football with some balance. And that was, I thought,
- 2:42Speaker 1: one of the best things about it.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Well, I think two things. One, you know, it's a
- 2:49Speaker 2: little easier to run the ball on a Southern Miss
- 2:52Speaker 2: than it is a team that's, you know, got big
- 2:54Speaker 2: 10 money put on the defensive front and the defensive tackle. So, uh,
- 2:57Speaker 2: that's first of all, second of all, there's a commitment
- 2:59Speaker 2: there and a really good job by our guys at
- 3:01Speaker 2: doing what, you know, needs to be done. So there
- 3:03Speaker 2: is continuity and there is rhythm and there is the
- 3:07Speaker 2: ability to, to have sustained success, you know, in that,
- 3:10Speaker 2: in that area of the game. Um, and that, that
- 3:12Speaker 2: ultimately sets the table for everything else you're trying to
- 3:14Speaker 2: do that, that then allows you to have some good.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Play action stuff.
- 3:17Speaker 2: And then, um, allows you to set the table for
- 3:20Speaker 2: the drop back passing game too. So I think the
- 3:23Speaker 2: quarterback's best friend is a solid run game, and we've
- 3:26Speaker 2: got to continue to put our line in positions where
- 3:28Speaker 2: we're not asking five guys to block seven or six
- 3:31Speaker 2: to block eight, hat on a hat, and the numbers equate.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And we use the plus one run game with Caleb
- 3:37Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, the numbers game matters for sure in the offensive
- 3:41Speaker 1: line blocking schemes. Bowers ran for 41 yards and a
- 3:45Speaker 1: touchdown in the second quarter. Kenji Christian, 15 times 64 yards.
- 3:50Speaker 1: You averaged 4.6 a carry. I mean, do you look
- 3:53Speaker 1: at numbers like that after the game and say, oh,
- 3:55Speaker 1: that's a good number? Or do you just say it
- 3:57Speaker 1: looked good to me?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Well, balance is what you're striving for. Balance, keep the
- 4:03Speaker 2: defense on their heels and score points. You know, and
- 4:06Speaker 2: however that happens, that's, you know, good offense to me.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So you're trying to hit all the statistical numbers you can.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You want to be great in all the categories. but
- 4:17Speaker 2: I think that you have to be able to attack
- 4:20Speaker 2: how you want to attack. You've got to be able
- 4:22Speaker 2: to keep the defenses honest.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and you're able to do that with the running game,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and Caleb Osborne threw 22 times, completed 16. That seems
- 4:31Speaker 1: like a low number in terms of attempts, but are
- 4:34Speaker 1: you happy with that? I mean, it was 214 yards
- 4:37Speaker 1: he threw for a couple touchdowns.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, sometimes the score of the game dictates, too,
- 4:43Speaker 2: how you play. I mean, we came out in the
- 4:44Speaker 2: third one, third quarter drive where, you know, we're in
- 4:47Speaker 2: 12 personnel, most of the drive, if not all the drive.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And we're able to run the football six, seven, eight
- 4:52Speaker 2: yards a crack right there. And if you can continue
- 4:55Speaker 2: to do that, there's no need to throw it. So,
- 4:58Speaker 2: you know, I think it just there's not a set
- 5:00Speaker 2: number of passes that we feel like we have to,
- 5:02Speaker 2: you know, meet each and every week. But again, like
- 5:05Speaker 2: I said, you're striving for balance.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah, we all talk about quarterback every week, not just
- 5:10Speaker 1: with you, but NFL guys, you know, Patriots are talking
- 5:13Speaker 1: about Drake Mays, doesn't look like an MVP guy this
- 5:16Speaker 1: year for the Patriots. I don't believe in any of
- 5:19Speaker 1: that stuff, but I want to talk about that one
- 5:21Speaker 1: throw that Caleb made to Shamar Porter. As he's getting hit,
- 5:26Speaker 1: knocked down, and somehow rifles the ball into the end
- 5:30Speaker 1: zone from distance, accurately. I mean, that's not the kind
- 5:34Speaker 1: of stuff you almost can teach. I mean, that's just
- 5:37Speaker 1: raw talent, isn't it?
- 5:39Speaker 2: Well, to your point, first of all, there's only, there's
- 5:43Speaker 2: a lot of good quarterbacks that have played in the
- 5:45Speaker 2: National Football League and played at a high level in
- 5:47Speaker 2: college that were not the MVP of the league. So
- 5:49Speaker 2: there's only one of them, right? So I think there's,
- 5:53Speaker 2: you know, what are you asking of that position? Are
- 5:55Speaker 2: you asking to throw everything on his plate and him
- 5:57Speaker 2: just to go carry the franchise or the program to
- 6:00Speaker 2: the promised land? Or Are you asking him to do
- 6:04Speaker 2: his part and operate at a really high level? And
- 6:06Speaker 2: then when you have the opportunity to make the plays
- 6:08Speaker 2: that you're capable of making that are off script, like
- 6:11Speaker 2: the one you just mentioned, can you do it? And
- 6:13Speaker 2: he does.
- 6:14Speaker 1: He can do it.
- 6:14Speaker 2: So we're not going to live in that world, but
- 6:18Speaker 2: some of those are going to show up through the
- 6:19Speaker 2: course of the game, and that one happened to be
- 6:20Speaker 2: a massive get for our team. I mean, he was
- 6:23Speaker 2: able to see Shamar down there. They kind of cut
- 6:26Speaker 2: him loose, and he was able to find him in
- 6:28Speaker 2: a great athletic play by him and a great individual
- 6:30Speaker 2: effort by him.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And it resulted in a touchdown. That's always good. Jason
- 6:35Speaker 1: Candle with us, head coach of UConn football. We'll be
