Transcript
- 0:01This episode is not simply a rerecording of Goncold's earlier coverage of Brittany mcloone's murder.
- 0:09It includes updated and corrected information that came to light after the recent release
- 0:15of an affidavit requesting an arrest warrant, as well as a recent conversation with
- 0:21family. Because of new developments, most of which will be discussed in Part
- 0:26two, but plenty in this episode, we felt obligated to produce new,
- 0:32updated episodes to hopefully help Britney's family on their quest for justice, which,
- 0:38unfortunately they've been forced to continue after Britney's case hit another unforeseen roadblock. That
- 0:47is, justice for Britney recently seemed well within reach, but was unexpectedly and
- 0:53once again torn away from her loved one's grasps. Now without further hamblings from
- 1:00me onto the episode. The concol podcast may contain violent or graphic subject matter.
- 1:07Listener discretion is advised. Wood County, located about eighty miles west of
- 1:15the Louisiana Texas border in the East Texas Timberlands, is a strikingly beautiful place.
- 1:22It's densely forested with post and willow oaks, various pine and cherry laurels,
- 1:27among a variety of other trees. Wood County holds the majority of Lake
- 1:34Fork, a favorite among nature enthusiasts from across the state, particularly to those
- 1:41who are looking for a respite from the frenzied rat race that is the Dallas
- 1:46Fort Worth Metroplex. Those traveling to the area do so not only with fishing
- 1:52or hiking in mind, but also for the tranquility the natural environment surrounding the
- 1:59man made of wir The county's most populous towns are modest in size and include
- 2:06Minneola and Winnsborough. Regardless of the many archetypal small city downtown squares and picturesque
- 2:14rural surroundings, there's a dark side to Wood County, a dark side that
- 2:20likely escapes the site or notice of tourists and perhaps most residents. While Wood
- 2:28County seemed to most who lived there like a collection of safe country communities in
- 2:32two thousand and seven, the reality was something of an anomaly. At the
- 2:38time. Although the majority of Texas towns and big cities were continuing to enjoy
- 2:44a downhill trend in violent crime, wood County was at the peak of a
- 2:49decade long rise and that year, one of the most unimaginable and senseless acts
- 2:57of violence in the history of Wood County occurred, the murder of nineteen year
- 3:01old Brittany McLoone. This heinous crimes sheer brutality, shocked area residence and began
- 3:09a grieving family's quest for justice that continues to this day. Britney Danielle McLoone
- 3:40was born on November ninth, nineteen eighty seven to Ron McLoone and Patricia Tye
- 3:46in Alama Gordo, New Mexico. She was very wanted when her dad and
- 3:53I got bretted it with her first Ary really wanted a girl, so he
- 3:59had Britta's name Britney Daniel picked out before our son was one, which really
- 4:03didn't have a boy's nake. Brittany was wanted away before she got here.
- 4:10While Britney was still very young. The family moved to Winnsboro, Texas,
- 4:15a small town of about three thousand residents at the time, located in both
- 4:20Wood and Franklin Counties. Brittany was a happy child, and she flourished even
- 4:28after the separation and divorce of her parents. Her sister Hope, with whom
- 4:33Brittany shares a father looked up to her big sister. Hope admired many things
- 4:40about Brittany. Her refusal to cave to peer pressure for one her sister's eventual
- 4:46journey into adulthood without leaving behind the joy and innocence of childhood and adolescence also
- 4:55inspired Hope. Brittney was happy, Hope said to stay a little girl until
- 5:00she felt good and ready to grow up. Brittany was the kind of sister
- 5:04all her siblings looked up to. By the time she graduated high school,
- 5:10Brittany was ready to realize her dreams of going to college to become a nurse,
- 5:15settling down and perhaps getting married and starting a family of her own.
- 5:20The last big chunk of time that I spent with her was the summer of
- 5:24two thousand and five, and me, my younger brother, and I spent
- 5:28at the summer down there. A huge chunk of memories I have is from
- 5:31that summer, and there was a huge shoese lake. So pretty much every
- 5:36day we were going to the week driving around, we'd stay up all night
- 5:42until the fund came up, playing video games. I was just the best
- 5:46time of my life and I'm really, really really grateful that I had that
- 5:49many months and was able to make those memories. We just had a lot
- 5:56of fun. She was oh when I shake you as a goose and shoes.
- 6:00She lived always always made you laugh. Almost seemed like she never had
- 6:06that day and the little time that she was here, she definitely definitely made
- 6:13an impact on everybody that knew her. An amazing person, good grade,
- 6:17wasn't a troublemaker, wasn't you know, didn't really go out or anything like
- 6:24that. She mainly it was a family that she hung out with and suck
- 6:28around. That was her friends and family. Brittany's personality was huge and she
- 6:34was comfortable in her own skin. One day she might be wearing a Metallica
- 6:40T shirt that she cut the sleeves off of herself, and the next day
- 6:45a preppy, striped polo style shirt. Since she was a country girl to
- 6:49her core, you might even catch Brittany in a forest camo T shirt or
- 6:55baseball cap. In fact, she wasn't afraid of getting dirty or diving into
- 7:00an adventure head first. Brittany's brother Brandon, like her sister Hope and her
- 7:06mother Patricia, also remembered Brittany as a country girl first and foremost, and
- 7:13like Hope, he remembers the importance in which Brittany held her family. Very
- 7:18very family oriented individual. You know, family in the world to her,
- 7:23especially her sibling through younger siblings, very close. She's one of the most
- 7:27outgoing people, you know. I mean, she grew up in a small
- 7:30town, always lived in small town, so she's definitely a tomboy. But
- 7:33I mean she would give you the show off her back, you know,
- 7:35the Uxorivers. She was nineteen Oneths she left us, so you know,
- 7:41I mean typical teenager stuff. We grew up around horses and stuff, so
- 7:45she really enjoyed riding horses in Laura. And you know, because she was
- 7:48into anything outdoors. You know, she always loved camping. You know,
- 7:51she's being outside. Definitely, definitely horses, She's shed. She definitely had
- 7:57a soft spot for all animals because she could just be on a horse and
- 8:03fly forever, and you know the kind of her happy place. After graduating
- 8:09with honors from Winnsboro High in two thousand and six, Brittany was keeping busy.
- 8:15She began an extended break from school to save money before heading to the
- 8:20big city Dallas, so she could attend Baylor University's School of Nursing. To
- 8:26do that, Brittany was working at a Lowe's Home Improvement stores distribution center in
- 8:31nearby Mount Vernon, and also keeping a second job in Winnsboro at an Alco
- 8:37store, a now defunct small retail chain. But that wasn't all Brittany had
- 8:45on her platter. She also helped care for her blind grandmother and was often
- 8:50charged with keeping her younger brothers in line. More big sister stuff. It's
- 8:56hard to imagine where she found the time, but Brittany was also seeing a
- 9:01young man named Jeff Stagner, a fellow Winsborough High alum. Brittany was pretty
- 9:09sure she was in love. That took the family by surprise. Britney's mother,
- 9:16Patricia, said she'd never been boy crazy. Also, according to her
- 9:20sister Hope, Brittany had never pursued a relationship with any of the boys she
- 9:26hung around, not even the guy who took her to prom. She was
- 9:31seemingly head over heels for Jeff, but her family, pretty much all of
- 9:35them didn't think he was the right fit for her. For starters, Brittany
- 9:41loathed cigarettes and drug use, but Jeff smoked and experimented with various narcotics.
- 9:50We knew that they argued and thought a lot. Jeff, you know it
- 9:54wasn't a really good relationship. I mean, be different. Was the psychological
- 9:58and and verbal abuse there don't. I don't know if there was any physical
- 10:03but I know, just like I said from speaking of the family members in
- 10:07small town talked that he wasn't He definitely wasn't mister charming. I mean,
- 10:11he has a history a very different odd individuals. As Hope got to know
- 10:20her sister's boyfriend, she began to feel a sense of foreboding, a feeling
- 10:24that the relationship would end badly, something terrible Hope felt was going to happen
- 10:33to her sister. In April of two thousand and seven, Hope was secretly
- 10:39relieved, but nonetheless saddened over her sister's first experience at suffering love lost.
- 10:46When Brittany and Jeff broke up, the entire family in fact, was relieved,
- 10:54but it didn't last long. Even after parting ways, Brittany and Jeff
- 11:00were still communicating, and they were on again before the breakup even had the
- 11:03chance to cool off They're on again off again romance was no anomaly as far
- 11:11as young love is concerned, of course, and perhaps Brittany's heartbreak during the
- 11:16off again period was the reason for her sister Hope's sense of foreboding when she
- 11:22and Jeff's relationship began, or perhaps what Hope felt foreshadowed something unequivocally worse.
- 11:41On Friday, May fourth, two thousand and seven, Brittany mcloone's boyfriend,
- 11:46Jeff Stagner, and his stepfather left their home on the two hundred block of
- 11:52Country Road forty eight thirty seven to travel to the cleburn area to pick up
- 11:56Jeff's maternal grandmother. The time was just after eight thirty a m. Cleburne
- 12:05is located about thirty two miles due south of Fort Worth. The one hundred
- 12:09and forty five mile drive there from the Stagner home in Wood County takes about
- 12:15two hours and forty minutes in non rush hour traffic. Jeff's mother was at
- 12:20work at the local Alco store, and his brother and sister in school.
- 12:26Brittany, who had just finished her shift early that morning, went straight to
- 12:31Jeff's after and stayed there while everyone was gone, getting some rest. Early
- 12:37that afternoon, Jeff Stagner phoned Patricia, Britney's mother from his cell phone and
- 12:43asked if Brittany was home. Brittany was not home, and since she had
- 12:48told her mother that she'd probably go straight to Jeff's after work, Patricia figured
- 12:54her daughter had gone to sleep while Jeff and his parents were away. She'd
- 13:00be heading home soon enough, Patricia thought. Almost an hour later. However,
- 13:05at about two twenty pm, Brittany still hadn't made it home. Patricia
- 13:11called Brittany's cell phone. It went straight to voicemail. Patricia was already passively
- 13:18worried, but at this point a feeling of dread was bubbling to the surface.
- 13:24It wasn't like Brittany to leave her mother hanging as far as her whereabouts
- 13:28or movements were concerned, and anyway, the nineteen year old's cell phone was,
- 13:35as her mother put it, like an extension of her arm. She
- 13:39always had it nearby and always answered it never went straight to voicemail. Brittany
- 13:48going to her boyfriend's right after work two factored into Patricia's worry. She knew
- 13:54that was her daughter's plans that day, but she hadn't known her daughter to
- 13:58do that before generally as her regular routine, Brittany came home, took a
- 14:05shower, and slept for a bit before going to Jeff's. His calls to
- 14:11Brittany as he, his dad, and grandmother made their way back to Wood
- 14:16County, he later said, had also gone straight to voicemail. Patricia called
- 14:22Jeff back and asked him if he'd found Brittany yet, and as they pulled
- 14:28up at the Stagner home, Jeff replied that he had. She was at
- 14:33his house sleeping, He presumed, because as they returned home at about three
- 14:37pm, Brittany's truck was still in the driveway. When Patricia asked him why
- 14:43Brittany didn't answer her call, Jeff told her that she must be sleeping hard
- 14:48and must not have heard the ring. That certainly did not explain why Patricia's
- 14:54calls went straight to voicemail, but knowing that her daughter worked hard and a
- 15:01lot, that answer satisfied Patricia. She asked Jeff that he tell Brittany she
- 15:07loved her and to give her a call when she woke up. Jeff told
- 15:11Patricia he would, and as he ended the call with his girlfriend's mother,
- 15:16Jeff walked into his room where he thought Brittany was sleeping, However, she
- 15:22was not. When he entered, Brittany was there, but she was battered
- 15:28and bloodied. She'd been badly beaten, brutally murdered Britney's face, and had
- 15:35bludgeoned with a blunt object. Jeff Stagner called nine one one, but did
- 15:41not call Patricia back to tell her about her daughter. Soon after, two
- 15:48Wood County Sheriff's deputies appeared at Patricia's doorstep. Patricia's mother, who also lived
- 15:54at the home, and son answered the door. Patricia began to approach,
- 16:00but when she heard the deputy's ask for Brenda or Debbie, which no one
- 16:06in the house was named, she figured the deputy's visit was a mistake.
- 16:11She turned around and left her mother and son to speak with the officers.
- 16:15The lawman left a few moments later. When Patricia's mother told her that the
- 16:22deputies were referring to the last name McLoone, she immediately panicked as she realized
- 16:29that they had the right place after all. Patricia decided she'd head to Jeffs
- 16:34to make sure Brittany was okay, but before doing so, she picked up
- 16:38the phone and called the Sheriff's office to inquire as to why the deputies had
- 16:45visited. Sheriff Dwayne Dougherty got on the line and told Patricia not to leave.
- 16:52He was sending the deputies back out right away. When they arrived back
- 16:56at Patricia's house, the he's asked her to speak with them in private,
- 17:02and upon settling in the dining room, they told her about Brittany. They
- 17:07would not, however, disclose to her the manner in which Brittany died.
- 17:14There that words, where your daughter is deceased, and you know, I
- 17:18lost it. They wouldn't tell many issue had died in a car accident.
- 17:22They wouldn't tell me anything. So they left, which I don't They shouldn't
- 17:29have, I think in most circumstances, some you know, police officer stage
- 17:32with the family, you know. But I decided to call first, and
- 17:37he told me Brittany's body was already on its way to Dallas without anybody having
- 17:44identified her or said it was okay. And the funeral home director is the
- 17:48one that told me that Brittany had been murdered, that it had been not
- 17:53force trauma to head the news. Of course, was devastating. The shock,
- 18:00trauma, and grief stopped time for Britney's loved ones. As they learned
- 18:07more, it only got worse. Her sister Hope described to us what the
- 18:11family has been told about Britney's murder and the crime scene. There's no forced
- 18:18entry. Whoever when in there either knew that she was alone, or they
- 18:25were home to keep the one of their back doors, and it was known
- 18:29that it would be left a lot, so it was someone that frequented the
- 18:33house. They knew that it might not be secure. The Attorney General's office
- 18:37physically told us that when when the fault occurred, that it's in a very
- 18:42small area of the event. It's not there was like a big sign of
- 18:47struggle or anything. Um. They tend to believe that she was asleep,
- 18:53went to the faulted and never came to or never knew what happened. We
- 19:00have copies of her autopsy reporter and from me and breathing the AUTOPSI sport and
- 19:07you know, trying to understand it as much as I can. She had
- 19:10some appreti major wounds to her forehead, some pretty big ones to the back
- 19:15of her head, and some smaller smaller moves to the turn her temples and
- 19:22kind of the tide her head, and in my opinion, she didn't show,
- 19:27but then two wounds from her hands. They've always told us that she
- 19:32didn't, but there's a lot of breathing that covered her left hands and she
- 19:37was she was left handed, So that's there's a personal opinion. I always
- 19:41kind of thought that, you know, maybe she was aware at least a
- 19:45little bit of what was going on. Those are fault. Her work clothes
- 19:49were folded neatly beside the bed, and then her clothing that she was wearing
- 19:53while she was asleep. They never found. Britney's mother, Patricia, also
- 19:59said that she's been told conflicting information about whether or not her daughter was sexually
- 20:04assaulted. Wood County Sheriff Dwayne Dougherty assigned Brittany mclowe's case to Lieutenant Miles Tucker.
- 20:15Britney's underwear were missing. She was discovered completely unclothed, which was unusual.
- 20:22Brittany's boyfriend, Jeff, told investigators since she never slept in the nude
- 20:27at his house, Brittany felt it would be disrespectful to his mother. Jeff
- 20:33told police. As the cops investigated the crime scene. Jeff's sister, who
- 20:41will call Melba, and her boyfriend, twenty five year old chatter Old car
- 20:45pulled up to the house. Deputy Mark Miller stopped, identified and briefly questioned
- 20:52them car. Deputy Miller noted seemed very nervous. He was visibly shaken,
- 21:00king both physically and audibly, and even had to be calmed down by his
- 21:04girlfriend. She told him to relax and that Deputy Miller was a nice guy.
- 21:11The two were released from questioning a short time later. The Wood County
- 21:18Sheriff's office was certainly used to crime, but not a crime like the savage
- 21:23attack against nineteen year old Brittany McLoone. They had no witnesses, and one
- 21:30state Attorney General's Office investigator told the family that it was as if the perpetrator
- 21:37had entered the home, possibly sexually assaulted and killed Brittany while covered in plastic
- 21:42wrap, an analogy meaning that he left no physical evidence. However, years
- 21:49later, on a social media thread of all places, Wood County Sheriff Tom
- 21:55Castelow, who was not sheriff at the time of Britney's murder, admitted that
- 22:00officers who were unfamiliar with proper investigative techniques had contaminated the crime scene. Wood
- 22:07County Sheriff's Office deputies too, let the family back into the house the crime
- 22:14scene the same evening. Brittany was found slain there just hours later. This
- 22:21almost certainly resulted in further contamination. Even still, an affidavit years later states
- 22:30that numerous items of evidence were collected there. A later Wood County sheriff revealed
- 22:37that there were multiple sources of DNA bagged for evidence items taken from Jeff's bedroom
- 22:42in areas such as the bed, the wall, the carpet, and from
- 22:47clothing. Besides strange comments from a Texas Attorney General's Office investigator and improperly trained
- 22:56sheriff's deputies bumbling around the murder, other investigative oddities occurred, such as law
- 23:03enforcements failure to drag Lake Winsborough to look for the murder weapon, which was
- 23:10determined to be a heavy tea or cross shaped metal object like a tire iron.
- 23:17A detail to keep in mind. Lake Winsboro is directly behind Jeff's house
- 23:23where Brittany was found, only about one hundred and fifty feet away. A
- 23:30few days after Brittany mcloone's body was discovered through the media. Sheriff Doherty asked
- 23:36for someone to come forward with information and stated that they had a few suspects
- 23:41they were looking into. Britney's death was estimated as occurring sometime between eight am
- 23:49and three pm, a timeframe based not on scientific analysis. Rather, it
- 23:56is simply based on when she was last seen alive and when she was found.
- 24:02Forensic pathology in two thousand and seven might not be what it is today
- 24:07in twenty twenty three, but it certainly was not the stone age of the
- 24:11practice, and this extremely large gap of time leaves much to be desired as
- 24:17far as determining who could have committed the crime. Britney's boyfriend, Jeff was
- 24:23scrutinized for obvious reasons. He was the last known person to see Brittney alive,
- 24:30he found her body, and the two had recently gotten back together after
- 24:34a pretty intense breakup. Jeff's DNA was all over the scene. Of course,
- 24:41it was his room, so it meant little in terms of evidence that
- 24:45he was involved in Brittany's murder in any way. The families and Likelywood County
- 24:52Sheriff's Office Investigator's first reaction was that Jeff was involved in Britney's death when sheriff's
- 25:00deputies told Patricia that Brittany was deceased. In fact, it was her first
- 25:06reaction when the props told me. My reaction that kind of a bitch killed
- 25:12her, didn't me? And I thought it was Jeff. Now, two
- 25:18officers came back later that night, you know, to interview me and you
- 25:23know, ask me specifics about Jeff, you know, because I had said
- 25:27that, and they did arrest him, take him to jail on an outstanding
- 25:34moore and of course suspicion that he had murdered Brittany. On Tuesday, May
- 25:51eighth, two thousand and seven, Brittany Danielle McLoone was laid to rest at
- 25:56Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro following us service at Baby Funeral Home. Britney's casket remained
- 26:03closed due to the severe injuries inflicted upon her by her killer. The services
- 26:11did not go without incident, as Britney's brother explained to us, to kind
- 26:18of tell you a little about his character or him and his family's character.
- 26:23Today the funeral, the family kind of asked them to stay away from the
- 26:27funeral home. You know, family only, especially in a homicide case.
- 26:32We don't know what happened. Everything super fresh at the time. You know,
- 26:34we respectfully asked them to not come, and him and his family and
- 26:41his mom and his aunt, they showed up at the funeral home. I
- 26:44was at the funeral home basically yelling and cursing us out because we aren't going
- 26:48to come in. If I always asked that from somebody, you know,
- 26:52under those circumstances, I definitely would respect those decisions. You know, they
- 26:57definitely did. Jeff Stagner and his family's actions that day only fueled their suspicions
- 27:04about him, adding to speculation. Patricia also felt like Jeff hadn't been completely
- 27:11honest with her about that day. Yeah, yet I had some very any
- 27:15good confrontations with Jeff about you know, like the day she was murdered,
- 27:21when he called me and told much she was they're sleeping. You know that's
- 27:26a lie. Why did he lie to me? Why did you send that?
- 27:29Need said, just because her truck was there? According to him,
- 27:33he hadn't at coin in the house to discover Brandy, and then once he
- 27:37discovered her law, the law wouldn't let him call me back and tell me.
- 27:41So that was his excuse for that. But yes, Jeff and I
- 27:47have had some very angry encounters. We left the Winnsboro area now about two
- 27:52years after Britney's murdered because it was just too hard to be an account around
- 27:56that family, not knowing Pail Britney could be the person standing Britney in the
- 28:02grocery store. Such a small town, one grocery store, you know.
- 28:07Jeff and his stepfather were thoroughly questioned. Their stories matched and made sense.
- 28:15The trip to Cleburne, at least two hours and forty minutes each way,
- 28:19plus time to load Jeff's grandmother in the car, also accounted for the estimated
- 28:25window of time Brittany was believed to have been killed, But again it should
- 28:30be noted that window of time appears to have no basis in scientific estimation.
- 28:38On May eleventh, two thousand and seven, five days after Brittany was brutally
- 28:44murdered, both Jeff and his stepfather underwent and passed polygraph examinations. Law enforcement
- 28:52cleared both men their alibi of going to cleburn that day to pick up Jeff's
- 28:57maternal grandmother, checked out not only by their matching accounts and witness accounts,
- 29:03but also verified by phone records and video surveillance. Jeff, by many indications,
- 29:11was not present to kill Brittany. More than a dozen years later,
- 29:17however, after three different Sheriff's office administrations had treated Jeff Stagner as if he
- 29:23was eliminated as a suspect, a new sheriff assured various media outlets that he
- 29:30was not. Brittany's family has had issues with the Wood County Sheriff's Office and
- 29:37the way they handled Brittany's case since the beginning up until the latest administration came
- 29:44in and began reinvestigating with care and fervor. I don't want to believe that
- 29:49a monster that could hurt beautiful young corovit Brittney so horribly smarter than the law
- 29:57enforcement Linton, Texas. I don't want to believe that it's hard to have
- 30:03any help, you know, when you wake up every day, there was
- 30:06no answers. I had one law enforcement officer compare for it, Andy to
- 30:11still and law nowhere. And I want to call, you know, Yatny's
- 30:15matches, what's going on? Because you know the guy who had his lawnmow
- 30:18still and last you know, I lost my daughter. I have to fight
- 30:25these people to make sure she gets justice. We've gone through four or five
- 30:32sheriffs over the kind of decade, and none of them have really brought in
- 30:37light or done anything about the case. One of them has actually threatened us
- 30:42and threatened our family and my dad and told us to learn our position and
- 30:47we shouldn't be saying anything. So as far as law enforcement, it really
- 30:51feels like something getting done. I mean, the d a kind of steps
- 30:55in, you know, from Austin, They kind of help out with the
- 30:59agency. Even still to that degree I mean is honestly, there's not a
- 31:03lot of hope there, unfortunately, and that's the hardest part of all this
- 31:07is, you know, not known if soling off. It seems unfathomable that
- 31:14a professional law enforcement agency would become argumentative and condescending on social media to families
- 31:21of victims, but would county authorities have done so with members of Britney's family.
- 31:27I'm not doing this for you, I'm doing this for justice. Ex
- 31:30Sheriff Jim Brown, who would later face charges of abuse of official capacity and
- 31:37official oppression, replied to Ron McGlone, Britney's father on Facebook. Perhaps the
- 31:45controversies surrounding the department that have come to light in recent years, most notably
- 31:51the aforementioned indictment in twenty seventeen of Sheriff Brown and the indictment of Deputy Miles
- 31:57Tucker for tampering with physical evidence official oppression and of aggravated perjury, can shed
- 32:05some light on why Brittany's case remains unsolved. But those are an entirely different
- 32:12and convoluted story altogether. Both men, it should be noted, were eventually
- 32:17acquitted of the charges. They say, everything happens for a reason and God
- 32:24has a plan. But I have a real hard time seeing this one,
- 32:30Brittany's father, Ron McLoone told an East Texas News reporter in twenty ten.
- 32:36Turn your own self in, he continued. You want to go to heaven.
- 32:40I'm sure everybody does, but at this point it don't look good for
- 32:45you. Brittany's family has struggled to make sense of her murder, but of
- 32:51course there's no sense to be had. The person responsible for the savage attack
- 32:57being held accountable is really the only relief hope describe to us. The effect
- 33:04that her sister's murder has had on her family. To put it in words,
- 33:07and you know, to try to explain it to people that haven't been
- 33:13through something like this, you know, your your world kind of stops and
- 33:19you take a look back, and while your world is no longer spanding,
- 33:22you see that the rest of the everybody else's world is going on, and
- 33:25you're just kind of stuck in this in this time of torture, is what
- 33:30it feels like. And you know, a lot of people didn't even know
- 33:35that she had a sister, because you know, I looked over here and
- 33:39she was definitely my best friend and one of the closest people. But I
- 33:45wanted too And you know, I was sixteen on that happened. She was
- 33:50nineteen, and not that at any age you're prepared to go through anything like
- 33:54that, because there is no way to prepare for that. But basically,
- 34:00I just had to grow up and there was something as a kid that you
- 34:06know, not even a lot of adults still was, and anything is.
- 34:12I just really want people to know how great of a person she was,
- 34:16and for people that have gone through something similar, you know, they know
- 34:21they know the feeling well. But she was the most innocent person that anything
- 34:27like this could happen to do. And that's the worst part of it is
- 34:30because that anybody deserves anything like this, but she definitely did not deserve.
- 34:37Yeah, you know, a good person wasn't with the wrong people, didn't
- 34:43do the wrong thing you think of innocent, She was that exactly. Brittany's
- 34:51brother, Brandon, too, has struggled with the reality that changed for him
- 34:55when she was taken away, you know, and then she's been murdered,
- 34:59or it's hard for a sixteen year old to kind of graph that at the
- 35:02time. You know, that's that's just stuff you see on movies and on
- 35:06TV. Or you never think it's just happened to you or a loved one,
- 35:08So kind to let that sink in it. Definitely, I don't think
- 35:13it's still full of seeking in well, thirteen years later. Obviously didn't get
- 35:17a whole lot of information as far as like crime scene and stuff like that.
- 35:22Up until just recently, everything's been so you know, we've had to
- 35:28walk on eggshells because nobody wants us to jeopardize the case or anything, or
- 35:32so they say. Patricia Britney's mother longs for answers for justice. I like
- 35:40up every day, which that paying in my heart. Someone hurt my baby
- 35:46so and there's never going to be a bit reason for it. But you
- 35:54don't know who the heck or who did be mad at I mean get mad
- 35:58at the whole people. No, so horrifict and she had so much tough
- 36:05in the world. In twenty twenty one, after almost fourteen years had passed
- 36:12since the murder of nineteen year old Brittany McLoone, Kelly Cole became Sheriff of
- 36:16Wood County, things began to look up. Justice finally seemed in sight.
- 36:24Sheriff Cole was more determined to solve Britney's case than any of the county's previous
- 36:30top lawman had been, though he insisted Jeff Stagner had indeed not been eliminated
- 36:37from the suspect pool. There was someone connected to Jeff, or Jeff's sister,
- 36:43more specifically, who eventually became the Wood County Sheriff's office prime suspect.
- 36:50In fact, this person, Chatteral Carr, had become a person of interest
- 36:54within an hour of the discovery of Britney's body. It wasn't simply because the
- 37:01man was visibly nervous when Deputy Mark Miller spoke with him at the scene that
- 37:07made him look suspicious. Rather, it was the combination of that, a
- 37:12criminal record that included violent offenses that mirrored Brittany slang lies he told regarding his
- 37:20alibi, and strong, circumstantial and physical evidence that pointed to him collected not
- 37:27long after the heinous crime was committed. That's next time on Gone Cold.
