- 0:04This is living. Waters of Grace, the teaching
- 0:07ministry of Lewis Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary
- 0:10Chapel of Westmoreland County in Greensburg, PA.
- 0:15Now here's Pastor Lewis as he continues teaching through God's
- 0:18Word. They're not making up stories.
- 0:38They're not trying to figure out what they're going to teach.
- 0:41It's here. They teach what's here, and they
- 0:45expound on the scriptures. And this is what we need in this
- 0:48day. We need truth, not stories, not
- 0:54fables, not entertainment. I don't need to come up here and
- 0:58make you laugh and entertain you.
- 1:01We need the word of God. That is what changes us.
- 1:06That's what transforms us. Have you ever attended a church
- 1:09service where the pastor's message didn't come from a
- 1:12biblical passage? Today, many Internet preachers
- 1:16focus on few good sermons offering seven steps to success
- 1:20or reminding you that you are the victor, not the victim.
- 1:24But today Pastor Lewis emphasizes that genuine time
- 1:28with God should be rooted in His Word.
- 1:31True guidance and strength are not found in 2 minutes sermon
- 1:36clips and prosperity teachings, but by reading and spending time
- 1:41with God in His Word, the Bible. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
- 1:45book of Jude chapter 1 as he begins his message apostates
- 1:50described. Please turn in your Bibles with
- 1:53me, please, to the book of Jude. We're going to plug through this
- 1:57and we're going to finish it eventually.
- 1:59I promise you, eventually we will finish Jude.
- 2:03We'll go to the 12th verse. I'm going to go ahead and read,
- 2:06first of all, the verses that I plan to cover.
- 2:10And I have to admit, because of the content of the verses, it's
- 2:14not like it's going to be a whole lot of verses, but I
- 2:17believe that the Lord has some things to say to us in these
- 2:19verses that will be beneficial to all of us in our Christian
- 2:24walk. But starting at verse 12, he
- 2:26says this. These are spots in your love
- 2:30feasts while they feast with you without fear, serving only
- 2:35themselves. They are clouds without water,
- 2:38carried about by the winds. They're late autumn trees
- 2:42without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots, raging
- 2:47waves of the sea foaming up their own shame, wandering
- 2:51stars, for whom has reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
- 2:59Now Enoch the 7th from Adam prophesied about these men also
- 3:04saying, Behold, the Lord comes with 10 thousands of his Saints
- 3:08to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly
- 3:13among them, all their ungodly deeds which they have committed
- 3:19in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly
- 3:25sinners have spoken against him. So once again we see here that
- 3:31this book of Jude, which he gives us small book, but he
- 3:36gives us right before the book of Revelations and he, he gives
- 3:40us his book because of what's going on in his culture at that
- 3:44particular time. People were walking away from
- 3:47the faith, people were absconding from the faith,
- 3:49people were defecting from the faith, people were turning from
- 3:55the faith. And some of these were teachers
- 3:58who were teaching ungodly things to the Christians.
- 4:05And you found it necessary, He found it necessary to put this,
- 4:11this letter out as a warning to the people to let them know.
- 4:15Be careful, watch out, make sure you are alert, make sure your
- 4:21eyes are open, you're sober. Make sure that you understand
- 4:27truth and that you're not deceived.
- 4:30And this morning, my heart is echoing what it is that Jude is
- 4:35saying. And the reason why is because
- 4:37I'm seeing as I'm reading some things and I'm watching and I'm
- 4:43looking, I'm seeing that people are walking away from the
- 4:45church. People are walking away from the
- 4:48church. People are leaving the church.
- 4:50People are, are, are defecting from the Word of God.
- 4:54Pastors are leaving their pulpits and leaving the faith.
- 4:59Not just leaving their pulpits, they're leaving the faith.
- 5:04But it brings to light the things that Paul said back in
- 5:08the book of first Timothy. And I'm going to read it because
- 5:13it's I think it's important that we hear this before we go into
- 5:18talking about the description of these false teachers.
- 5:21But there's two things I want to read before I get into the text.
- 5:24First, first, first Timothy, chapter 4.
- 5:29You've read it before, but I think it's appropriate here.
- 5:32First Timothy chapter 4, verse one, it says this.
- 5:37Now the spirit expressly says that in the latter times some
- 5:43will depart from the faith. Why?
- 5:48Because they're giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines
- 5:53of demons. Verse 2 says speaking lies in
- 5:57hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot
- 6:01iron. Now I want you to go to Second
- 6:04Timothy, and in Second Timothy, there's a couple things I'm
- 6:08going to read. First, we're going to start with
- 6:10start at chapter 4, First chapter 4, looking at verse 3,
- 6:16it says for the time will come when they will not endure sound
- 6:21doctrine, but according to their own desires.
- 6:25That's so important. Listen to that.
- 6:27But according to their own desires, because they have
- 6:31itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers and
- 6:38verse 4 says, and they will turn their ears away from the truth,
- 6:45away from the truth and be turned aside to fables.
- 6:51And then I'm going to read one more back over in Second Timothy
- 6:56again here in Second Timothy, but chapter 3, starting at verse
- 7:00one, it says, but know this, that in the later that in the
- 7:04last days perilous times will come.
- 7:08And then it describes how it will impact certain men.
- 7:13It says for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,
- 7:17boasters, proud blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
- 7:23unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers without
- 7:30self-control, brutal, despisers of good traitors, headstrong,
- 7:36haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God having
- 7:40a form of godliness but denying its power.
- 7:44And from such people turn away. So we have Paul giving this
- 7:53advice to Timothy, his young son in the faith who was a young
- 7:58pastor and he's saying, listen, understand something.
- 8:00And the latter times these things are going to happen.
- 8:05And it's also appropriate for us today.
- 8:09Back in I read something recently, I read that said back
- 8:12in 19, I think it was 1972, like 90% of the United States were
- 8:19Christian. Now it's less than 64% people
- 8:23walking away from the faith and a lot of the reasons why people
- 8:28are giving from walking away from the faith is is because
- 8:31they have differences with the Word of God.
- 8:35Now times have changed, the culture has changed, and the
- 8:39Word of God needs to change. No, it doesn't.
- 8:42Cultural differences. I want to live this way and the
- 8:45Word of God says I got to live that way.
- 8:47I'm not in agreement with it, so I'm walking away from it.
- 8:51These people I spoke to because they have been in some
- 8:54legalistic situations or in some legalistic church, religious
- 8:58kind of churches where you know, it was works based, was put
- 9:03condemnation on people instead of teaching both truth and
- 9:06grace. These people left because they
- 9:09feel like they just can't stand up to the standard of what their
- 9:14authority was trying to make them live up to.
- 9:16They can't stand up to it, so they want to walk away from it.
- 9:20It's easier for me not to be under any authority if I got to
- 9:23be under authority that I can't stand up to.
- 9:27So I'll just become an atheist and won't believe anything.
- 9:30Therefore, I don't have to worry about feeling condemned or
- 9:33feeling convicted about anything.
- 9:36I don't have to worry about it because I don't believe it.
- 9:40It doesn't matter whether we believe it or not.
- 9:42It doesn't make it not true. Truth is truth.
- 9:47Truth is truth, and just because I don't believe it doesn't make
- 9:51it so. I used to say, look, God said
- 9:53it, I believe it, and that settles it.
- 9:55No, God settled. God said it, that settles it.
- 9:59It doesn't matter whether I believe it or not.
- 10:03It's not settled because I believe it.
- 10:04It's not settled because you believe it.
- 10:06It's settled because God said it.
- 10:08The word of God is. It's to us.
- 10:13It is an aroma of life to those of us who believe.
- 10:18To those who don't believe is the aroma of death leading to
- 10:21death. But unfortunately, people are
- 10:24losing faith in the Word of God. They're losing faith in the word
- 10:29of God. They're losing, they're losing
- 10:30faith in the promises of God. And the reason why is because
- 10:34they don't know God. So they think that this God
- 10:39that's in the body, they think this God should be this way or
- 10:41he should be that way. God shouldn't 'cause people to
- 10:45suffer or let people suffer. They don't know God, that some
- 10:49of the best work he does in us is in our suffering.
- 10:53God is supposed to love everybody.
- 10:56He's supposed to love everybody, and everybody's supposed to love
- 10:58everybody. Yes, He does love, but there is
- 11:03some things that we are not to love, in some ways that we are
- 11:09not to love. They don't know God.
- 11:15And I've learned recently that you can know the Word of God and
- 11:18not know the God of the Word. We can quote Scripture, we can
- 11:22remember Scripture, We can do all those things.
- 11:25But if we don't know the God of the Scripture, those Scriptures
- 11:28doesn't mean anything. We got people sitting in
- 11:30seminaries who know the word of God.
- 11:33They know it, they've studied it, they get degrees in it, but
- 11:37they don't know the God of the Bible.
- 11:41And because of that, there's no change in their lives.
- 11:46And unfortunately, a lot of the lot of these men and are walking
- 11:50away from the faith at certain points.
- 11:52No Holy Spirit, no relationship, just a head knowledge of what's
- 11:57in here. Our hearts for you as pastors
- 12:00and anyone who comes up here and teach, Pastor Clark and myself,
- 12:08when we teach, we want to have the Word living in your hearts
- 12:13and in your lives and in our hearts and in our lives.
- 12:17We pray for the Word to live in us that we have a relationship
- 12:22with the God of the Word. We pray for your spiritual
- 12:25growth, that the knowledge of his will, that you would have
- 12:30the knowledge of his will inside of you.
- 12:32You understand it and spiritual understanding and and
- 12:36discernment, the knowledge of His will.
- 12:41We have teachers that come in, out and I'm going to say it
- 12:43again on Wednesday night. We have 5 teachers that come in
- 12:48here and they teach and they're teaching Old Testament.
- 12:52They're teaching Old Testament right now.
- 12:53We're going through the book of Psalms, but on Wednesday night
- 12:56we have Tom Brubaker, we got Will Thomas, we got Steve
- 13:00Eichelberger, Dave Trout, John Morris, and these guys are
- 13:06really bringing forth the scriptures, the truth.
- 13:10They're not making up stories. They're not trying to figure out
- 13:13what they're going to teach. It's here.
- 13:15They teach what's here, and they expound on the scriptures.
- 13:20And this is what we need in this day.
- 13:22We need truth, not stories, not fables, not entertainment.
- 13:29I don't need to come up here and make you laugh and entertain
- 13:33you. We need the Word of God.
- 13:36That is what changes us. That's what transforms us.
- 13:40That's what makes us look more and more like Jesus is the word
- 13:44of God. And we can't lose faith in the
- 13:46Word of God because the Bible says he's faithful even when
- 13:51we're not. It's the same word that brought
- 13:54forth the earth. It's the same word that said,
- 13:57let there be light in this bed. Light.
- 13:58Ever since no one's been able to put the light out.
- 14:03It's the same word that created you and me.
- 14:05It's the same word that we that we live by.
- 14:08We it says that certain things are going to happen and it has
- 14:11happened. It's the same word that says
- 14:15that we would need a savior and we did.
- 14:18It's the same word that says I'm going to give you a savior, and
- 14:20he did. Same word that says that every
- 14:22He would suffer on the cross and die, and he did.
- 14:25It's the same word that says that he would get up out of that
- 14:28grave, and he did. It's the same word that says
- 14:32He's coming back and He is. It's the same word, same word
- 14:36that saved our souls. It's the same word that brought
- 14:39us from darkness into light. The same word that brought us
- 14:41out of death and into his, the Kingdom of his dear Son.
- 14:45The same word, the same word that redeemed you and me, the
- 14:50same word by which we have forgiveness of sins.
- 14:53It's the same word. The same word.
- 14:58Let's not lose faith in this. This Bible and the one that you
- 15:03hold. This doesn't contain the word of
- 15:07God. It is the word of God and we
- 15:13have to believe that and trust it.
- 15:17Why am I saying that? Because what Jude is talking
- 15:20about here are people who walked away from the truth, who turned
- 15:27away from the truth, and they announced teaching things and
- 15:31saying things to try to get people to come after them.
- 15:35They're Antichrist, which means that they want people to follow
- 15:38them instead of Christ. They want to teach their own
- 15:43truth instead of the truth that is truth.
- 15:48The Bible says that. In fact if you look on your the
- 15:51title of this it probably say my says apostates deprived and
- 15:56doomed for a second. I just want to give a difference
- 16:00between apostates and the word backsliders We see both in the
- 16:07Bible. Well, one of the things that we
- 16:10know is that a backslider is a temporary condition.
- 16:13It's a lapse of of faith. It's a drifting away at some
- 16:16point where Christians will have a lapse in faith.
- 16:19And it may be because of something that happened, you
- 16:21know, maybe someone died that when you were very close to.
- 16:23So you get angry with God and for a while you stop going to
- 16:26church or stop praying or stop reading your Bible.
- 16:29These things happens. Sometimes temptation gets a hold
- 16:32of you and you start going back and reverting back, you know, to
- 16:35your old lifestyle. Sometimes those things happen,
- 16:39but at some point or another, because of the Holy Spirit
- 16:42that's in you and because God, the God that that saved you
- 16:46won't let you go but so far. And then the Spirit that's in
- 16:49you will bring you back. You won't walk away totally.
- 16:55But then there's a apostasy. Apostasy is more of a deliberate
- 16:59rejection of the Christian faith.
- 17:03It's a, it's a deliberate defection and, and, and, and,
- 17:06and, and you reject the truth. Truth is, in fact, you never
- 17:12really believed it in the first place.
- 17:15You professed it. I'm going to give you a
- 17:18definition of an apostate. An apostate is not, and this is
- 17:21from where this one warns where it's being.
- 17:24I kind of like this definition. It says an apostate is not a
- 17:27true believer who has abandoned his salvation.
- 17:32You know, people try to say, hey, look, if you're an
- 17:33apostate, then isn't that proof that, you know, salvation is not
- 17:38necessarily eternal? You know, I mean that you can
- 17:40lose your salvation. No, no.
- 17:43When words you say that an apostate is not a true believer
- 17:46who has abandoned his salvation. He is a person who has professed
- 17:50to accept the truth and trust the Savior, then turns from the
- 17:56faith. Bible says, how are we saved?
- 17:59Yeah, we are saved when we confess with our mouths the Lord
- 18:04Jesus Christ, but also believe in our hearts that God has
- 18:09raised him from the dead. That's got to be there as well.
- 18:15So an apostate is more of a deliberate and it's more of a
- 18:18final situation because these, you know, the apostate never
- 18:20really believed, never truly believed.
- 18:24And this is who Jude is talking about here, these men who came
- 18:29into the church crepin to the church.
- 18:32I mean, looks like just like like any meios that's sitting
- 18:34here could be a person sitting beside you.
- 18:35We have no idea. Look like us, talk like us, act
- 18:39like us. You know us.
- 18:40If we hear somebody say hey, blessed and all be favored, you
- 18:44know, maybe that means that they truly believe.
- 18:46If they can hold those conversations and say those
- 18:48slang words, may that means that they you know, the gospel slang
- 18:51words may that means that they truly believe, but not
- 18:53necessarily. But only God can see the heart.
- 18:56We can't. Only God can see the heart.
- 18:59God knows the heart. So this is who he's talking
- 19:02about. Those who have walked away from
- 19:04the faith and decided that they want to try to bring people to
- 19:08themselves because they don't want to be under the authority
- 19:13of Jesus Christ. So he says here that these are
- 19:17spots in your love feasts while they feast with you without
- 19:21fear, serving only themselves. Spots in your love feast now at
- 19:27first mention, you know, you can almost imagine like you know, a
- 19:31shirt, for example, white shirt. You know what I mean?
- 19:33If I came up here with a white shirt on and and the whole shirt
- 19:36is clean except for one spot And if you catch me after eating,
- 19:40sometimes you might catch me with a spot on my shirt.
- 19:43You know, I tend to get something on me all the time.
- 19:45I don't know why how that happens.
- 19:48No comments there. My poor wife has to always try
- 19:52to get these spots out after I get finished.
- 19:54But anyway, you would think it's like a a white shirt or
- 19:58something though. And then also you see a spot on
- 20:00it. Your eye goes directly to the
- 20:01spot. So it's like a spot in your love
- 20:04fees. But that's not what Jude is
- 20:05talking about here. What Jude is talking about here
- 20:09when he says is there spots in your love fees, he means that
- 20:13these are in the Greek. It means hidden reefs.
- 20:19Whole different meaning. Spots, hidden reefs.
- 20:23It's a nautical term, hidden reefs or hidden rocks.
- 20:29These are things that lie under the surface of the water that
- 20:32you can't see, and you won't even know that they're there
- 20:36until they've already done damage to the bottom of your
- 20:39ship. Captains try to be aware of
- 20:43these. They try to watch out for these
- 20:45with their ships when they're going into certain waters, but
- 20:49you can't see them because they're below the surface and
- 20:52they cause damage. And before you even realize that
- 20:55they're there is too late. They've already caused damage.
- 20:58They're already put a hole with the bottom of your ship and you
- 21:01starting to sink. But the same thing happens in
- 21:05the church with false teachers. Sometimes before people even
- 21:10realize that this is a false teacher, that this is someone
- 21:14who doesn't believe what we believe is sometimes too late.
- 21:17They've already done damage. They've always.
- 21:19They've already caused some people to stumble.
- 21:22They've already rebelled against leadership.
- 21:25They've already started to divide the church.
- 21:28They've already caused damage. We have to remember what brought
- 21:33down the Titanic. It wasn't the iceberg that they
- 21:36saw on top. It was a damage that they
- 21:39couldn't see underneath the jagged edges of the iceberg that
- 21:43was underneath that did the damage that brought that ship
- 21:46down. And that's what Jude is saying
- 21:48here. We got to be aware because these
- 21:52false teachers can sometimes be just like hidden reefs, hidden
- 21:56rocks, and we don't know that they're there until they've
- 21:59already done damage. It's a sad thing when you have
- 22:05that kind of situation arise where you just don't know.
- 22:08We don't know. We don't know until we see the
- 22:11effects of it. Then we realize that something
- 22:14has happened. We've already been the, the,
- 22:18we've been the victims of something that was trying to
- 22:21divide and, and tear up the church.
- 22:23I pray, I pray that here in Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland,
- 22:29that we have so much love here and that we have so much an
- 22:32awareness of the Word of God. It's going to be really hard for
- 22:36someone to come in and try to deceive you guys because there's
- 22:39so many of you who study the word of God.
- 22:41You don't just study the Word of God when you come here.
- 22:44It's not when you just hear me, Clark or any of the teachers on
- 22:46Wednesday night that you guys are hearing the word of God.
- 22:48You guys are always reading and studying the Word of God.
- 22:52That's why we had a conversations that we have with
- 22:55one another because you're always in the Word.
- 22:57It's going to be very difficult for someone to come in here and
- 23:01to try to teach something that is ungodly in here.
- 23:05The ears would hear it. I would pray that our ears would
- 23:08hear it immediately and we'd be able to stop it before we cause
- 23:12any damage underneath the surface spots in our love
- 23:17feasts. And and then the Bible says, and
- 23:19they do it without fear. And just to go ahead and, and
- 23:23follow up on the word love feast.
- 23:24We have agape feast. And that's exactly what these
- 23:27love feasts are. We have agape feast that we have
- 23:29every now and then potlucks or whatever you want to call them,
- 23:32where people come and bring their food.
- 23:34Everybody loves those, Everybody loves those.
- 23:38But what Jude is saying is that these false teachers will go in
- 23:42to these love feasts and they would socialize with everybody
- 23:47like everything is fine and talk like we all believe the same
- 23:50thing. Meanwhile, they have motives
- 23:54that are ungodly. This has been Living Waters of
- 23:59Grace, a ministry of Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland in
- 24:02Greensburg, PA Pastor Lewis Harrell has been teaching
- 24:07through the book of Jude. This is a book of warning as the
- 24:10audience that Jude was writing to was coming under attack from
- 24:14false teachers. Even in the early days of the
- 24:17church, there were teachers who claimed to have a unique
- 24:20revelation from God that superseded Scripture.
- 24:24Pastor Lewis wants you to be sure to be on your guard against
