- 0:00And what about Mitchell? What do you hear from them
- 0:02during this week? Yeah, it's, it's been cool.
- 0:05You know, our, our Lawrence County tourism Board, which is
- 0:07so crazy that we even have one of those truthfully, they, they
- 0:11rented like ALEDTV and my entire high school gym is doing like a
- 0:16watch party. They say there's going to be
- 0:191500 people there. I don't think our gym even holds
- 0:211500 people. So yeah, I'm excited to see what
- 0:25the turn out is. You know, they're doing
- 0:27something at the high school. They're opening up the
- 0:29concession stands, the whole 9 yards.
- 0:31And then the American Legion is going to do a watch party too.
- 0:35And just to see, I mean, my whole career, whether I was even
- 0:38in ARCA or Now Cup, like just that area has always been a huge
- 0:42supporter of mine. I think part of it is just
- 0:44everybody kind of knows everybody.
- 0:47But yeah, to see how excited they are, and I mean, every win
- 0:50this year they've been, we don't have a siren, but we've been
- 0:54flying like a 19 flag this week. All down Main Street is
- 0:57checkered flags. Yeah, the whole city and even
- 1:00the whole county has been really getting into it.
- 1:02So yeah, it's pretty cool. I think NBC is sending a camera
- 1:05to the high school to like, have like a, you know, live view of
- 1:08it. So yeah, it's going to be pretty
- 1:10neat. It's got to be.
- 1:10Surreal. I mean, I know you're a big time
- 1:12NASCAR driver, but like your high school gym, like people are
- 1:15going to be there. It's wild.
- 1:17Yeah, it's it's wild. They definitely were never going
- 1:20to come during my high school tenure to watch me do anything
- 1:22else. I don't really rode the bench
- 1:24and everything I did. So yeah, it's it's crazy, you
- 1:27know, just. Yeah, just to see the support
- 1:30that you have, you know, all these other guys, I'm sure they
- 1:33have people from their hometown that support them, but they're
- 1:36not from a town of 3500 people, right.
- 1:38So it's just it's different whenever you come from that
- 1:41small of a town. And I mean, I've seen people
- 1:43from like literally like 2-3 hours away talking about how
- 1:46they're going to drive to Mitchell just to watch.
- 1:49So yeah, it's going to be cool to see what the outcomes.
- 1:52Not to spoil the reveal tomorrow, but your 2020
- 1:55Darlington win was voted the number one moment of the Xfinity
- 1:58Series era. That's cool.
- 2:00I. Just want to get your thoughts
- 2:02on how that win resonated in the story and where you're at now,
- 2:06especially having Brooks in the 20s.
- 2:08Yeah, it's and it's cool to hear.
- 2:11That was obviously just regardless of what I was going
- 2:14through, our family was going through, it was an unbelievable
- 2:17race. Just me and Kyle and, you know,
- 2:19just truthfully like an instant classic, right.
- 2:22And then to to do it dirt with the circumstances and
- 2:25everything. It was, and I mean, every single
- 2:28weekend of the year, I have at least two or three people come
- 2:32up to me and still talk about that race and how it helped them
- 2:34get through difficult times. And, you know, just to see the
- 2:37impact that race had. You know, when when Merce and I
- 2:41went through that, I mean, it's two days before that race and
- 2:44you know, we contemplated ever going public with it.
- 2:46We just prayed about it and, and felt like we were being called
- 2:49to, you know, go public with our struggles.
- 2:51And you know, then to win that race and have, you know, my
- 2:55emotions and you know, just, you know, everything that kind of
- 2:58went around that race to see the impact that had with multiple
- 3:01people. I think now we understand kind
- 3:04of why, you know, we had that happen.
- 3:08And then, yeah, to be able to to have Brooks now and the twins
- 3:11and, you know, for them to to be in Victory Lane at Darlington
- 3:15and, and obviously to be out here, it's it's pretty cool to
- 3:17hear that, you know, that was voted the number one race
- 3:19because there's been a lot of incredible races in the Xfinity
- 3:22Series. And yeah, I'm, I'm humbled at,
- 3:24you know, that one. What does this weekend mean to
- 3:28Brooks? What is he Is is he getting a
- 3:30sense of this? Yeah.
- 3:32How? How is it like seeing it through
- 3:33his eyes? Yeah, he's been saying ever
- 3:35since Talladega, like we're going to Phoenix, baby, like
- 3:38he's. But I don't think he really
- 3:40knows what it means. He just knows we're going to
- 3:41Phoenix. And he knows that Phoenix is a
- 3:44long way away, and he's just wondering if he was allowed to
- 3:46take his iPad to Phoenix because it is going to be such a long
- 3:49way. But, yeah, I don't think he
- 3:53really understands quite what the like.
- 3:56He'll tell you like, yeah, you're going to try to win the
- 3:58championship and you're going to do a big, big, big burnout if
- 4:00you win. But I don't know if he really
- 4:02knows what it is. So, yeah, it's been cool to just
- 4:08get to experience that. But I think he's just more
- 4:10focused this week on swimming and having fun with his cousins
- 4:14and brother and sister and getting to see his, you know,
- 4:16Papa and grandma. And then the race is just icing
- 4:19on the cake. Earlier today, you were.
- 4:23Helping. With food bags, how important is
- 4:26that for you to kind of volunteer your time with the
- 4:29other drivers and seeing fans out there kind of doing the same
- 4:31thing? Yeah, I mean, at the end of the
- 4:34day, that's what it's all about is helping people and and, you
- 4:37know, for us to go out there and do that, I think, you know,
- 4:40people, you know, race fans and actually want to be around race
- 4:44car drivers, right. And it draws more people out
- 4:46there. You know, they said they're
- 4:47going to pack over 1000 bags just for those going out there
- 4:50in that short amount of time. And yeah, just the impact you
- 4:53can make in the community, whether it's us doing that or,
- 4:55you know, a couple years ago, you know, in my hometown, we
- 4:58gave away bikes and you're just a couple months ago, I kind of
- 5:02did a similar thing with God's pit crew and packed a lot of
- 5:04bags for disaster relief and yeah, to do that kind of stuff.
- 5:08I mean, at the end of the day, that's what's important.
- 5:11We, I think we all get caught up in what thinking that, you know,
- 5:14winning this trophy is important, but just being a good
- 5:16person at the end of the day is what's the most important thing.
- 5:19And I think that is, you know, can kind of bring us all back to
- 5:23to what is important this week is that in the midst of all the
- 5:26chaos that we got going on, we can still go help people and,
- 5:29you know, try to make an impact. Hey, Chase, at one time I think
- 5:32a lot of us oppressed that you're playing with house money
- 5:35to get here, but I think you make believers out of all of us.
- 5:38Was there a time when you questioned yourself, like,
- 5:40really, do I belong here? And then it came to you like,
- 5:42yes, I belong here. Yeah, a little bit, you know, my
- 5:46my whole cup career at least, like I would only have flashes
- 5:50of running up front. And you know, this year,
- 5:53especially the second-half, it's like this every weekend we're up
- 5:56front. And yeah, there was definitely a
- 5:58turning point. I feel like I want to say it was
- 6:01around August, we were in like second like literally 3 weeks in
- 6:04a row. And I remember like the first
- 6:06two times we did that, it was like, oh man, like I'm up front.
- 6:08A cup race like this is cool. So now it's just like normal.
- 6:13Like I don't even think about it.
- 6:15You know, I race around the guys up front all the time now.
- 6:17And you know, I feel like they race me differently now than
- 6:20what they did at the beginning of the year.
- 6:22And you know, I'm, I'm guilty of it myself.
- 6:25Like when you're racing up front week in week out and there's a
- 6:28guy that's normally not up there, like you just race him
- 6:31differently because you know, you're not going to race against
- 6:33him very often. Where now I feel like I'm just
- 6:36one of the guys that's kind of up there consistently.
- 6:38And to do that, it's, it's pretty cool because that's what
- 6:42you strive to, to do as a race runner.
- 6:44You want to be up front a lot. And to just be a normal up front
- 6:48runner in the Cup series is pretty wild to think about.
- 6:51I'm also under the opinion that you would be the best driver to
- 6:54party with if you win the championship.
- 6:55Would you be the best driver to party with out of those these
- 6:58four dudes? How did you get to that
- 7:01conclusion is what I'm curious. I've never had a sip of alcohol
- 7:04in my life. I'm not sitting.
- 7:05About alcohol, I'm just talking about the post race party.
- 7:07Come on the craziness. I'm not sitting about alcohol.
- 7:10I don't know, I feel like a lot of craziness happens with
- 7:13alcohol. I mean, I feel like I'm fun to
- 7:16hang out with, but I I definitely feel like if you're
- 7:18looking for a crazy and wild time, then there's probably
- 7:21better guys to go with. But yeah, if you just want to a
- 7:25nice, good time, then yeah. I feel like, you know, our
- 7:27group's fun. My my group is way more fun.
- 7:29I feel like to be around than I am, for sure.
- 7:32All right. My group will.
- 7:33My team will get after it. Yeah.
- 7:35What's? The feeling coming back here.
- 7:37After last year, closing out the season, getting ready for this.
- 7:46Yeah, it's, it's unique, you know, just, you know, I'm, I'm
- 7:50the only guy right, that's up here.
- 7:51It's even in that situation. And yeah, I just remember last
- 7:56year, like, you know, I, I knew that I was moving on to a great
- 8:00opportunity, but you don't like when you switch jobs, like you
- 8:03don't know if you're actually going to like it or not, or if
- 8:06you're going to fit in and like SHR like I just, I love the
- 8:10people I was around. It felt like home.
- 8:13I mean, they literally would come to my family's birthday
- 8:16parties and gender reveal parties when we had kids and
- 8:19like, they were just a part of my family And, and knowing that
- 8:22as a group, like we were never going to race together again.
- 8:28Like that was, that was hard to swallow.
- 8:30Like it was emotional. Like we, we all cried.
- 8:32I cried on pit Rd. They were crying on pit Rd.
- 8:35And I mean, after the race we were doing beer toast and stuff
- 8:38and like, they they kicked us out the racetrack because we did
- 8:41not want to leave because we knew when we left we were never
- 8:44getting back together again as far as like a core group.
- 8:46And then, yeah, to be a year removed and racing for a
- 8:49championship, it's, you know, something a year ago I don't I
- 8:53definitely wouldn't have thought of, you know, being a
- 8:56possibility because I was so devastated at the time.
- 8:59But it's been, you know, obviously great coming to JGR.
- 9:02Like I I love it over here, but it's still different, right?
- 9:05Like every organization and team has things that are unique about
- 9:09it. And I'm glad I'm at where I'm at
- 9:12because I I really do enjoy it. But you're still, you know, SHR
- 9:15was kind of like, like my first love, right?
- 9:18Like you just, it was home and it'll never be there again.
- 9:22So yeah, I don't know. It's just different, you know,
- 9:24for a lot of reasons. But yeah, I'm glad I'm in this
- 9:26position for sure. Chase, I know there's a lot of
- 9:29people who have got you here, one of those being Johnny
- 9:31Morris, Bass Pro Shops. I'm curious, this is your first
- 9:34season with them. You know, what's the
- 9:36relationship been like? And you know what?
- 9:38Have you learned from them? Yeah, it's, it's been pretty
- 9:40unbelievable getting just to, you know, first of all meet
- 9:43Johnny, but then now to get to know him and, you know, like 2
- 9:48months ago I got to go fishing with Johnny.
- 9:50And like that's stuff people like dream about doing, right?
- 9:53It's fishing with Johnny Morris. So it's, it's been really neat.
- 9:56And I would say the biggest thing I've learned from Johnny
- 9:58is just, it's been mind blowing to me at how good he is just
- 10:03taking care of people and just having relationships with
- 10:05people. And I mean, literally every
- 10:08racetrack he goes to, he goes to the store himself.
- 10:11Like he knows every general manager he calls them, takes
- 10:14care of them, like knows them by name, knows their family.
- 10:16It's just unbelievable. I texted him, it's probably in
- 10:19March. Like I had only known him, you
- 10:20know, for maybe a month. And I saw it at Daytona.
- 10:23And I said, man, it blows my mind how big of a company you
- 10:27have and how like much of A one-on-one personal relationship
- 10:31you have with each and every one of your, your employees.
- 10:33And that's been something I, I've always tried to do my
- 10:36entire career, just make them all feel appreciative and are
- 10:39appreciated. And, and yeah, Johnny is
- 10:41certainly so good at that. So it's been really cool just to
- 10:44get to know Johnny. And he called me yesterday and
- 10:47he was at a store opening and a guy had a 19 hat on and he's
- 10:50like, you know, he called me. He's like, hey, can you FaceTime
- 10:53me real quick? And, you know, I Facetimed and
- 10:55the fan was pumped. And like Johnny just so down to
- 10:57earth and he's, he's a kid at heart.
- 11:00Like he's just so excited to just be living life and it's
- 11:05infectious to be around. With all that said, how bad do
- 11:07you want to win the championship for him, for your family, for
- 11:10coach and for your team? Yeah, I certainly want to win it
- 11:12bad for, you know, myself, Johnny Coach, you know, and and
- 11:16Talladega was the first time I'd ever won with Johnny B in there.
- 11:19Just seeing how fired up he was. I mean, yeah, he called me two
- 11:25days later, still fired up about it.
- 11:27I couldn't imagine if we won the championship.
- 11:28He's he's texting me almost every day this week about how
- 11:31fired up he is to get here. And, you know, normally he only
- 11:34comes on race day. He's coming a day early just to
- 11:36to be here and be a part of it. So yeah, it would mean a lot.
- 11:39And then obviously, like my family side, it would mean a lot
- 11:41to them too. And then, you know, for coach,
- 11:43even just to be able to I think kind of solidify everything.
- 11:47I mean, I think we've already kind of done that.
- 11:49But certainly if we could win a championship our first year, you
- 11:52know it would it would be pretty special I think, for everybody
- 11:54involved.
