- 0:35Speaker 2: What yeah, No, this is for June eighteenth, nineteenth nineteenth.
- 0:42Speaker 2: This is June nineteenth. If you're listening to me now,
- 0:46Speaker 2: it's federal holiday Juneteenth, and we are recognizing that here
- 0:50Speaker 2: by not being here. So this is a pre recorded
- 0:53Speaker 2: episode and on today's episode, we've got a great one
- 0:57Speaker 2: for you. We're here to answer your questions from how
- 1:01Speaker 2: to handle conversations with poachers? Are we two unique ways
- 1:06Speaker 2: to prepare bear meat? This entire show is Q and
- 1:09Speaker 2: A and it is June nineteenth today, So we are
- 1:14Speaker 2: in the thick of things. Summer speaking, boys, have any
- 1:19Speaker 2: fun summer plans?
- 1:20Speaker 3: Oh man, I.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Stumbled through that intro. I don't think this is off
- 1:24Speaker 2: to a good start.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I think you did great.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I wrote this script. But you crushed that.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Pound some more of that beer. Lub it up, Randall,
- 1:33Speaker 1: mubercate the wheels. Uh, what are you doing, Corey Man? Camping?
- 1:39Speaker 4: Been doing some camping. It's been a hot summer already.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I feel like winter kind of really. Yeah, it feels
- 1:45Speaker 4: like all of a sudden, it's just been.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Hot, like it feels like it's July out.
- 1:49Speaker 3: And it's not.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It's June nineteenth, yes, but it's actually is June ninth, June.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Ninth that we're recording this, and it's just it's just
- 1:57Speaker 4: hotter than it needs to be.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Already was out taken.
- 2:00Speaker 4: It was up near our state capital over the weekend
- 2:02Speaker 4: and it was really smoky. I think it's fires coming
- 2:05Speaker 4: down to Canada, but it's like it's just coming on
- 2:08Speaker 4: a little too early. I feel like spring held on
- 2:10Speaker 4: pretty well, but then it's like we need some snow still.
- 2:13Speaker 2: The smoke rolled in and dramatically.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Waters in western Montana are drying up, the rivers are
- 2:21Speaker 4: drying up.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Reservoirs are not going to fill up this year.
- 2:24Speaker 1: It's not looking good.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So you're telling me you're not going to fish much
- 2:27Speaker 2: this summer.
- 2:28Speaker 4: I'm going to fish now, and comes summer, I'm going
- 2:30Speaker 4: to be shooting rocks from a slingshot at carp or
- 2:35Speaker 4: something else, not catching trout, that's for sure.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah, maybe going to the reservoirs and practicing your
- 2:42Speaker 1: spear fishing on some carp in the water bow fishing.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Maybe that'd be cool.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I get your Montana trout fishing now, because it
- 2:48Speaker 4: feels like it's going to be a hoot owl later.
- 2:52Speaker 1: What does hoodowl mean, Corey.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Well, that's just the term that they've coined when rivers
- 3:00Speaker 4: a little too warm, if it's above seventy two degrees
- 3:03Speaker 4: for a few days in a row, they'll shut the
- 3:06Speaker 4: fishing down, mostly in the afternoons.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Usually it's around two PM.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Or whenever the water gets hot. But really you just
- 3:12Speaker 4: need to have a thermometer in the water and use
- 3:14Speaker 4: your head. If it gets honestly towards seventy you should
- 3:17Speaker 4: put your fly fishing gear or any of your fishing
- 3:20Speaker 4: gear down and go do something else.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Get up a little earlier and fish early.
- 3:24Speaker 1: In the mornings.
- 3:24Speaker 3: But we will see that here sooner than later, I'm sure.
- 3:28Speaker 1: So you shouldn't need a fish on owl hours, right.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I don't understand they're only protecting a bunch of non natives.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I can understand if they're killing a bunch of cutthroats,
- 3:37Speaker 1: but there's, yeah, a bunch of rainbows and browns in there.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Yeah, what point in evolution is something native and not
- 3:44Speaker 4: and non native. Still, like if a rainbow is born
- 3:47Speaker 4: in a river, obviously it's not from that area. But
- 3:51Speaker 4: at what point, like does it take thousands of years,
- 3:54Speaker 4: hundreds of thousands of years? At what point is an
- 3:56Speaker 4: animal native to landscape?
- 3:58Speaker 1: You can ask that same Ques question about humans. Yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 1: we were just up in Manitoba, you know, on that
- 4:03Speaker 1: bear hunt and different parts of that country Canada, not
- 4:08Speaker 1: Manitoba the province. But you know, they depending on which
- 4:12Speaker 1: province you're in, they really respect They call them the
- 4:15Speaker 1: first nations, right, which we don't really use that term
- 4:17Speaker 1: down here. I started thinking a lot about that. I'm like, well,
- 4:21Speaker 1: they were first, but who was before them?
- 4:25Speaker 2: And no one?
- 4:26Speaker 5: Maybe no one?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Do we know.
- 4:29Speaker 3: All the evidence maybe is buried under the sand.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Like does their history go back that far where they're like,
- 4:36Speaker 1: oh no, like my ancestors came across the Lambridge or
- 4:41Speaker 1: my ancestors came down the coast and then migrated.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I mean I think so there's really no other way
- 4:46Speaker 2: they you could have ended up indigenous without having some
- 4:51Speaker 2: lineage that goes back to that, right.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Well, I just don't think we know all the details yet,
- 5:01Speaker 1: do you you do way more reading about this than
- 5:04Speaker 1: I do.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I mean, I we're getting into we're getting in some
- 5:09Speaker 2: pretty heady territory.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Here goes oh we are. This is not where you
- 5:14Speaker 1: want to go with this.
- 5:15Speaker 2: No, no, I.
- 5:16Speaker 1: We're supposed to just be talking about what we're doing this.
- 5:21Speaker 6: What's the meaning of life?
- 5:22Speaker 2: You're honest.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I heard you're running a race this summer. Speaking of
- 5:26Speaker 1: being hot this summer. I ran a race a couple
- 5:31Speaker 1: of days ago last week. If you're listening to this,
- 5:34Speaker 1: on June nineteenth in Poketeo, Idaho called the Scout Mountain
- 5:39Speaker 1: Ultra ran the fifty miles distance, which actually in Scout
- 5:45Speaker 1: Mountain is at Scout Mountains fifty five. For the first
- 5:49Speaker 1: time ever, I used a handkerchief that or a bandana
- 5:52Speaker 1: that was sewn shut and it almost it had like
- 5:55Speaker 1: a sleeve on the long edge and the ends were
- 5:58Speaker 1: open like where you would tie it went around your
- 6:00Speaker 1: neck and you stuff ice in there and then you
- 6:04Speaker 1: tie around your neck. Game changer.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And so you did do this this past weekend. It's
- 6:10Speaker 2: not coming up next weekend.
- 6:12Speaker 1: No.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I Already level of detail convinced.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Me, yes, yeah, game changer. And obviously it started with
- 6:19Speaker 1: just a regular bandana. Somebody decided to put some ice
- 6:22Speaker 1: in a bandana, and they've evolved. But I bet I
- 6:26Speaker 1: would have run at least thirty minutes, maybe sixty minutes longer,
- 6:30Speaker 1: and been way more affected by the heat had I
- 6:32Speaker 1: not had this ice bandana.
- 6:35Speaker 3: You were able to find some ice to fill it
- 6:37Speaker 3: up throughout the race.
- 6:38Speaker 1: So yeah, most of these ultras, I would say all
- 6:42Speaker 1: of them honestly have eight stations, and they're The longest
- 6:48Speaker 1: distance that we went between eight stations was just over
- 6:51Speaker 1: ten miles. But most of the time they try to
- 6:53Speaker 1: set them at like five to seven. Five sometimes can
- 6:57Speaker 1: seem short because you're barely getting through what you've replenished
- 7:01Speaker 1: before you need more. Ten felt a little bit long,
- 7:07Speaker 1: especially Saturday, because I was like, I drained all my
- 7:10Speaker 1: liquids and everything. But anyways, they know it's going to
- 7:13Speaker 1: be hot. They had ice at every single aid station,
- 7:17Speaker 1: lots of different like energy and chloric drinks, like the
- 7:23Speaker 1: you know, Gatorade type stuff, tailwind Goo type stuff. But
- 7:27Speaker 1: then also they'll just have little cups of coke gingeril.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Oh.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't understand why I'm always I would
- 7:34Speaker 1: rather drink flat coke because then I don't have the
- 7:37Speaker 1: carbonation bouncing in my belly. But nobody at this race
- 7:41Speaker 1: was They were like, oh, we thought you'd like carbonation
- 7:43Speaker 1: because it settles your stomach, you know how like when
- 7:46Speaker 1: you're a kid and you sat your mom gets a
- 7:48Speaker 1: little seven up ginger trail.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Yeah, saltine crackers.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah. So I ran the fifty five in
- 7:57Speaker 1: preparation for the Crazy Mountain one hundred, which is at
- 8:00Speaker 1: the end of July.
- 8:02Speaker 2: That'll be hot.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It could be could be cold too, whether in the
- 8:07Speaker 1: crazies at the end of July, never know, don't know.
- 8:11Speaker 2: July fourth last year were up there and getting snowed on.
- 8:14Speaker 2: You were up there, see what a little hike.
- 8:18Speaker 6: I mean.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Odds are it'll be warm on the warmer side of
- 8:22Speaker 1: things than colder, but you never know. I'll be prepared
- 8:25Speaker 1: for that. If it's colder, it'll be much easier running.
- 8:30Speaker 1: What else I want to tell you about my recent race.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I see you here. Two emergency poops, Is that correct?
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yes, But it was a bad way to start the race.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Within the first ten miles, I had two of those.
- 8:45Speaker 1: But between those two emergency poops, I had three falls
- 8:49Speaker 1: and at forty seven years of age, my falls are
- 8:52Speaker 1: not getting any easier. I used to kind of like skid,
- 8:56Speaker 1: roll flip and just like be right back on my
- 8:59Speaker 1: feet and trudge all going like oh what was that,
- 9:01Speaker 1: you know, and kind of take a couple of deep breasts,
- 9:03Speaker 1: make sure the ribs and lungs were okay. Now I
- 9:06Speaker 1: like skid and pretty much come to a slt on
- 9:10Speaker 1: the ground and then lift my face off the dirt
- 9:13Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, and then I you know, slowly
- 9:17Speaker 1: like a big buck getting up out of his bed,
- 9:19Speaker 1: you know, get up and stretch and you know, then
- 9:22Speaker 1: check and make sure everything's still working, and then proceed
- 9:26Speaker 1: down the trail. I don't know if it was I
- 9:28Speaker 1: was wearing some new shoes. I didn't have too many
- 9:31Speaker 1: miles in yet. The trail was like mountain bike single track,
- 9:35Speaker 1: so it had a little bit of that like v
- 9:37Speaker 1: to it got a belly, yeah, and I had like
- 9:40Speaker 1: like that groove, you know what I'm talking about. And
- 9:42Speaker 1: I don't know if that was getting to me because
- 9:44Speaker 1: I talked to some other folks that actually fell in
- 9:46Speaker 1: that same section too. But yeah, I've made it most
- 9:51Speaker 1: of my life not needing to poop while I'm running,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and those days are behind me.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Are all poops while you're running, emergency poops.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I think if I would have been able to, I
- 10:03Speaker 1: knew I had an AID station coming up, and I'm
- 10:06Speaker 1: kind of watching all my watch. I know what mileage
- 10:08Speaker 1: it's at, I know how many miles I have to go,
- 10:11Speaker 1: And if I could just make it to the aid station,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and even if I was, you know, sprinting in there
- 10:16Speaker 1: to go have a bowet movement, I would say, Oh,
- 10:19Speaker 1: it wasn't really an emergency. I had to poop. Yeah,
- 10:22Speaker 1: but these these are like, oh, no, you're getting off
- 10:25Speaker 1: the trail now and you're gonna poop. Talking to more
- 10:31Speaker 1: ultra marathon runners, they're like, oh, if you don't have
- 10:35Speaker 1: some of those along with losing some toenails, fighting some nausea,
- 10:39Speaker 1: you didn't really experience an ultra marathon, Well, I would guess,
- 10:43Speaker 1: like one hundred miles.
- 10:44Speaker 3: How long is that going to take you?
- 10:46Speaker 1: The goal is to do it under thirty miles thirty sorry,
- 10:51Speaker 1: thirty hours. Yeah, that's a few poops yo for sure. Well,
- 10:54Speaker 1: depending because I think if you're.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Traveling, well, sometimes you can go two days.
- 11:00Speaker 4: I have that curse where when I start a new hunt.
- 11:02Speaker 4: I don't poop for three or four days.
- 11:04Speaker 1: It's bad.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Phil, What about you start a new video game? Are
- 11:09Speaker 2: things moving correctly or Yeah?
- 11:11Speaker 6: I mean I keep a bucket behind the couch just.
- 11:14Speaker 1: There you go. Oh yeah, yeah, boy.
- 11:18Speaker 2: That's the hell of a hobby. Yeah real, picked a doozy.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Yeah, picked a doozy. But it's you know, we we
- 11:26Speaker 1: went to bed having this conversation, like why are we
- 11:29Speaker 1: doing this? Like in our group, someone said, yeah, my literally,
- 11:34Speaker 1: my my bunghole is like warn raw and fucking on fire.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Sorry for the F bomb, And uh, that's no fun.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Like we're talking about between the three of us, how
- 11:45Speaker 1: many toenails we're gonna lose. Everybody's hobbling around, looks like
- 11:50Speaker 1: you can barely walk. And why why have we chosen this?
- 11:53Speaker 1: Because I used to run just to be in shape
- 11:55Speaker 1: for elk clunting, yeah right, just to be able to
- 11:57Speaker 1: chase the bowl up the mountain. And now it's become
- 12:01Speaker 1: a little bit more of a love for the run itself.
- 12:03Speaker 1: But and so we went to bed with questions and
- 12:05Speaker 1: I woke up and I said, you know, it's because,
- 12:08Speaker 1: uh it makes you feel alive. I think that's a
- 12:13Speaker 1: that's there's no simpler answer than that.
- 12:15Speaker 2: It's beautiful.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, you guys have any other questions, I can
- 12:20Speaker 1: tell you about my toenails. I can tell you about how.
- 12:23Speaker 2: To lose some. I almost lost a tonail during hunting season.
- 12:26Speaker 2: I put a toe warmer in my boot and then
- 12:29Speaker 2: it flipped around and got on top of my toe.
- 12:32Speaker 2: But I didn't want to take it out. Time out.
- 12:34Speaker 3: It was under your feet.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Yeah, what they go on top of your foot?
- 12:38Speaker 1: No, they don't know.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Good, Yeah, top of your toes. Try it.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You're walking around with it.
- 12:46Speaker 5: Listen.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I know that what you're saying works, but the directions
- 12:52Speaker 1: I never read.
- 12:52Speaker 3: The direction was the opposite.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but you certainly feel the heat touching you.
- 12:59Speaker 5: This is new.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I got this bad boy wrapped up around my big
- 13:02Speaker 2: toe and uh ouch, that toenail is still filled up
- 13:08Speaker 2: with blood.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Let's ask the let's ask the live chat. Do you
- 13:11Speaker 1: guys go toe warmers on top or underneath your toes?
- 13:15Speaker 3: Let's ask cal.
- 13:17Speaker 1: We'll wait for you guys to get back Phil.
- 13:19Speaker 2: What do we have?
- 13:20Speaker 6: Oh yeah, it's a fifty to fifty split crazy. Let's
- 13:24Speaker 6: settle nothing. I'm sorry on.
- 13:25Speaker 3: It's eleven fifteen on a Monday.
- 13:27Speaker 1: So it got in there. You still just hiked your
- 13:30Speaker 1: tail off and that little tonail pounded against that toe
- 13:33Speaker 1: warmer and that was the end of it.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, by the end of the day, I was
- 13:38Speaker 2: limping pretty good, but I just never wanted to take
- 13:40Speaker 2: my boot off. It was real cold.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Then do you lost it completely?
- 13:45Speaker 2: No? No, it just sort of died and I've kind
- 13:47Speaker 2: of trimmed it back to the quick never lifted off,
- 13:51Speaker 2: never lifted off, but it was no longer attached. It
- 13:54Speaker 2: was just kind of floating. So yeah, it's been a
- 13:57Speaker 2: weird one. It's still pretty ugly at this point. So
- 14:01Speaker 2: I'm wearing socks with crocs today. Hey, so you can't
- 14:03Speaker 2: get a peak fashion statement.
- 14:05Speaker 1: You know what my kids say these days, you're a
- 14:07Speaker 1: dork if you go the opposite, which is what I do.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I don't like wearing socks with my crocs, but the
- 14:12Speaker 1: kids are like, no, that's the only way to wear
- 14:14Speaker 1: crocs at So you're in, You're good.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I love it.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Do you think by looking at my toes you could
- 14:19Speaker 1: tell me if I'm gonna lose the toenail or not.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Oh, break them out.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Now, I'd have to get in there and wigle them
- 14:24Speaker 2: like a tooth.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Well, they're not loose yet by any means. They just
- 14:28Speaker 1: there's just a coloration to them. It's different from my
- 14:31Speaker 1: other toenails, and I think I still might be able
- 14:37Speaker 1: to keep them. But everybody looks at them as like, no,
- 14:39Speaker 1: they're gone, You're done. Is this your big toe? It
- 14:42Speaker 1: was both my big toes, and then two of the
- 14:45Speaker 1: little ones on their right foot. They're both looking at purply.
- 14:50Speaker 1: What I'm hoping is that if I'm gonna lose them,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna lose them before I have to run a
- 14:55Speaker 1: hundred miles. Because if I just don't have toenails there,
- 14:59Speaker 1: life will be easy peasy. But if I have like loose,
- 15:04Speaker 1: messed up, partially attached, painful toenails, could.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Suck put a little dental floss on him and tied
- 15:11Speaker 2: it to a door knob.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Oh, let's go.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Yeah? Did I tell you guys about the fellow that
- 15:15Speaker 1: I line hunted with one day. He's a buddy of Pete's.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Actually, you have his tonails removed ed?
- 15:20Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 15:21Speaker 1: Has it?
- 15:21Speaker 7: Oh?
- 15:21Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 15:22Speaker 1: Toails removed for the sole purpose of sheep hunting.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Really?
- 15:26Speaker 3: Yeah, had him removed completely?
- 15:28Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Yeah, he said he thought he was a tough guy,
- 15:32Speaker 1: and the doctors like, uh, yeah, we can like maybe
- 15:36Speaker 1: do like two because he was just gonna go in
- 15:38Speaker 1: and be like take him, take ten please, let's get
- 15:40Speaker 1: this done. And the doc's like, now, we'll do too,
- 15:43Speaker 1: and we'll see how it goes. And afterwards he's like, oh,
- 15:46Speaker 1: thank god, because yeah, I guess when you get your
- 15:49Speaker 1: toenails removed, it's not fun.
- 15:51Speaker 2: But then he went back there five more times. Yeah, huh, yeah,
- 15:55Speaker 2: it's hardcore.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Yeah, no, he's into it, love it all right, Well,
- 16:01Speaker 1: let's move on from my running. I'll let you boys
- 16:03Speaker 1: know how it goes when I'm done with one hundred Randa.
- 16:06Speaker 3: What do you got going on this summer?
- 16:08Speaker 8: Boy?
- 16:08Speaker 2: Are we doing? Yeah? I guess. Well it's now June nineteenth,
- 16:15Speaker 2: coming up shortly here. I'm heading across the pond for
- 16:18Speaker 2: a little tour of beer and brought fursts. Oh lovely Deutschland,
- 16:27Speaker 2: Deutschland ostrak. Ah, that's Austria, and I'm just gonna drink
- 16:33Speaker 2: a lot of beer and eat a lot of pretzels
- 16:35Speaker 2: and do a lot of sampling of local tube meats.
- 16:41Speaker 2: That sounds a little bit of walking Hey, it's a
- 16:43Speaker 2: tenth anniversary trip.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Oh yeah, good. Call is not far away. You could
- 16:50Speaker 1: take probably get one hundred dollars flight. Then call me
- 16:54Speaker 1: when you're over there.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Are you going to be there?
- 16:56Speaker 1: I won't be, but you know, just calling call me
- 17:00Speaker 1: back here and say, hey, I made it. If you
- 17:03Speaker 1: were going to.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Be there, I'd extend my trip and make it up
- 17:05Speaker 2: there so you could look for some dog raccoons or
- 17:08Speaker 2: whatever they are.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Oh, I can make that happen, buddy. I could make
- 17:12Speaker 1: a little raccoon dog trip happen for you. Well, that's awesome.
- 17:16Speaker 1: That sounds like a grip.
- 17:17Speaker 2: And then we're coming back and sort of immediately recording
- 17:20Speaker 2: the next Media or American History audiobook, which is no
- 17:23Speaker 2: small source of anxiety. It's gonna be great, but there's
- 17:27Speaker 2: a lot of work to do. And then in August,
- 17:31Speaker 2: you know, it just depends on how smoky everything is.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I'm going to an event in Ikalaca, the Dino shin
- 17:39Speaker 2: Dig that looks at the Carter County Museum. We're going
- 17:43Speaker 2: to go out and dig some dinosaur bones, listen to
- 17:45Speaker 2: some dinosaur research. So yeah, pretty big summer ahead of me, guys,
- 17:49Speaker 2: Pretty big summer.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Is Spencer New York going with you to the Dino Shin?
- 17:53Speaker 2: No, he's not. Tickets are limited so and and to
- 17:58Speaker 2: go out on the field expedition is couple hundred bucks.
- 18:00Speaker 2: So I didn't buy Spencer ticket. Long story short, but yeah,
- 18:05Speaker 2: I'm excited.
- 18:06Speaker 1: But you think he'd love that?
- 18:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he wants to go, but you know,
- 18:12Speaker 2: he's more of just a.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Solid rock guy.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I think when is this It's like July.
- 18:17Speaker 2: It's late July.
- 18:18Speaker 1: I Glaca gets hot.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, I think it's going to be very hot.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Phil. What about you?
- 18:25Speaker 6: Oh, thanks for asking, Corey. I don't have a whole
- 18:28Speaker 6: lot going on going to the Black Hills with the family.
- 18:30Speaker 6: It's our our short, little, short, little family vac this year.
- 18:34Speaker 3: There you go.
- 18:36Speaker 6: That's pretty much all I've got planned.
- 18:37Speaker 3: You know, go see Mount Rushmore.
- 18:39Speaker 6: We are The kids are excited. Yeah, yeah, they're they're
- 18:42Speaker 6: they're stoke. So yeah, it'll be a it'll be a
- 18:44Speaker 6: fun time.
- 18:45Speaker 1: How did you get them fired up on Mount Rushmore?
- 18:47Speaker 6: They just like the idea of Mount Rushmore. I'm sure
- 18:50Speaker 6: they'll be completely deflated once we actually get there and
- 18:53Speaker 6: they see how far away it is and how far
- 18:57Speaker 6: we had to drive to get there, but for the
- 19:00Speaker 6: time being, they're stoked, and that's I'm just gonna hold
- 19:02Speaker 6: on to that as long as I can.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Yeah, think about swinging by Devil's Tower, which is kind
- 19:07Speaker 4: of out of the way, but.
- 19:07Speaker 6: I have them thinking about it.
- 19:09Speaker 3: It's yeah, yeah, cam right underneath it.
- 19:11Speaker 1: And then there's uh Teddy Roosevelt National Park too.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Maybe in north Yeah, there's the bad Lands.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yeah, Badlands National Park is all right, and just the
- 19:22Speaker 2: Black Hills State Park is worth the drive. They have
- 19:25Speaker 2: a wild ass highway that goes round and round and
- 19:29Speaker 2: it kind of frames you go through these tunnels built
- 19:31Speaker 2: into the rock that frames Mount Rushmore quite nicely. Yeah,
- 19:35Speaker 2: it's very thoughtfully done.
- 19:36Speaker 6: Yeah, we're actually gonna be staying in the in the
- 19:38Speaker 6: bad Lands, so lovely.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Deadwood is the trip to stop too.
- 19:43Speaker 6: Oh you don't have to tell me. I've already got plants.
- 19:46Speaker 2: It's a poker, Phil, what's the chat saying?
- 19:48Speaker 6: Oh, it's crazy. Even though we're pre recording this episodere
- 19:52Speaker 6: is here. I don't know how we found out. Hell yeah,
- 19:55Speaker 6: shouts greetings. Thanks for the show. You guys are awesome. Mogor,
- 19:59Speaker 6: thanks for be in here. It's always go to.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Hear nineteenth and Hungary. Should we move on to some questions?
- 20:06Speaker 1: Well, god, let's do it. Well, that are comments. I
- 20:09Speaker 1: don't know which one you want to do first? Or
- 20:10Speaker 1: we can split. We can do a little bit of
- 20:13Speaker 1: one and then bounce back and forth.
- 20:15Speaker 2: We can bounce back and forth a little bit now here.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Let's begin with this question from Michael m. Michael em writes,
- 20:23Speaker 2: I've recently been gifted two shotguns by my father in law,
- 20:26Speaker 2: who is handicapped and can no longer hunt. Inspired by
- 20:30Speaker 2: this gesture and eager to connect with nature, I am
- 20:32Speaker 2: determined to embark on my hunting journey. However, as a newcomer,
- 20:36Speaker 2: I find the most daunting challenge is locating accessible land
- 20:39Speaker 2: to hunt on. I would greatly appreciate any advice or
- 20:42Speaker 2: resources you could share on how to find hunting land
- 20:44Speaker 2: in general. Additionally, if there are any local programs, public lands,
- 20:49Speaker 2: or community initiatives that facilitate land access for new hunters,
- 20:53Speaker 2: I would be eager to learn more.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Great question, who wants to start here? Be honest, Well,
- 21:01Speaker 1: it's almost as if this question was sent in under
- 21:04Speaker 1: a pseudonym.
- 21:08Speaker 2: No, this is a genuine email.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I know, but I'm asking if pseudonym is the right term.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I'm using like a fake name.
- 21:17Speaker 2: But that is that is the real name.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I know if my vocabulary is correct.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Yeah, pseudonym is.
- 21:23Speaker 1: A thank you. Yeah, as if someone from on x.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Oh oh, I see I see.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Under a pseudonym of Michael.
- 21:31Speaker 2: M I thought you're accusing Corey of making up this
- 21:33Speaker 2: question like.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Some of the other ones. No, get out of here,
- 21:39Speaker 1: but Michael, it's very easy. Get yourself a smartphone, download
- 21:45Speaker 1: yourself some ONYX, find yourself on that map, and then
- 21:50Speaker 1: turn on the layer of public lands and it will
- 21:56Speaker 1: literally light up on your map of all the available
- 22:00Speaker 1: public lands. And then usually you can click on said
- 22:03Speaker 1: lands and find out more information about it and maybe
- 22:06Speaker 1: even what you can can't hunt there, and then there's
- 22:09Speaker 1: usually links to hunting regulations and so on and so forth.
- 22:14Speaker 1: That would be my one piece of advice. I don't
- 22:20Speaker 1: know about any initiatives that facilitate land access for new hunters,
- 22:27Speaker 1: but I would say that you could go to Sharing
- 22:30Speaker 1: the Land that our buddy Doug Duran runs and see
- 22:35Speaker 1: if they might have some stuff going on, which is
- 22:37Speaker 1: basically a cooperative where they find willing landowners that want
- 22:44Speaker 1: to give some access. They set them up with people
- 22:48Speaker 1: like you that are looking to hunt and willing to
- 22:50Speaker 1: do a little bit of work to get access to
- 22:53Speaker 1: that land. And it's a great program. So there's stuff
- 22:56Speaker 1: like that out there. If that still doesn't work, send
- 23:00Speaker 1: some letters, go door knocking.
- 23:02Speaker 2: I would add to that, get involved in like your
- 23:07Speaker 2: local BHA chapter. Talk to make some friends who are
- 23:11Speaker 2: in the same boat. And then also reach out to
- 23:14Speaker 2: your local or your state Fish and Game office because
- 23:19Speaker 2: those most of those agencies have access programs, whether it's
- 23:25Speaker 2: like you know, the public lands that they manage directly
- 23:28Speaker 2: or private lands that they help administer public access too,
- 23:32Speaker 2: and oftentimes they have like staffers who are specifically working
- 23:37Speaker 2: on access issues. So it's their job and that's what
- 23:42Speaker 2: they want to do, is connect people with places to hunt.
- 23:45Speaker 2: So don't be afraid to reach out to Fish and
- 23:46Speaker 2: Game and see what they have going on.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Yeah, you took the words right out of my mouth.
- 23:53Speaker 4: I was also thinking, you have a local sporting good store,
- 23:56Speaker 4: go check out the bulletin board down there and see
- 23:58Speaker 4: if there's any group get together is or some sort
- 24:00Speaker 4: of event that you can.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Yeah, fundraisers, things like that ye.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Try mingling any local banquets unlimited.
- 24:07Speaker 2: I know, at least in some states there are organizations
- 24:10Speaker 2: where you can go do boots on the ground conservation work,
- 24:14Speaker 2: like outside of BHA. You know, there's like organizations that
- 24:17Speaker 2: are doing local projects. If you have like a you know,
- 24:21Speaker 2: like a local sportsman's group that's helping pull fans or
- 24:24Speaker 2: whatever else, go get involved in that stuff. And people
- 24:27Speaker 2: are more likely to extend an invite to you if
- 24:30Speaker 2: they see that you're invested in it and out there
- 24:33Speaker 2: in the world doing good work.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's a very good chance that the work
- 24:37Speaker 1: you'll be doing will be on land that you can
- 24:40Speaker 1: go hunt. Yeah, all right, if we knew what state
- 24:43Speaker 1: Michael m was in. But oh well, let's go on
- 24:46Speaker 1: to how do you pronounce this next one?
- 24:48Speaker 2: Randall uh jabron t h. I think this is a
- 24:52Speaker 2: pseudonym for Corey Jabron Jabron Jabron writes, I'll be hunting Archie,
- 24:59Speaker 2: Elk and Idaho the first time this fall. What should
- 25:01Speaker 2: I be doing to prepare as an ELK caller in
- 25:03Speaker 2: the off season? And to answer this question, here's mister
- 25:08Speaker 2: Jason Phelps. One of the most.
- 25:12Speaker 9: Asked questions we get this time of the years. What
- 25:14Speaker 9: should I be doing as a caller in the off
- 25:15Speaker 9: season to improve my chances for success come September. My
- 25:20Speaker 9: short answer is always you just need to have the
- 25:22Speaker 9: confidence to be able to call in September. One of
- 25:26Speaker 9: those biggest hurdles is you're out there, you're interacting with elk,
- 25:29Speaker 9: you're on the elk, and you're just afraid to call. Yeah,
- 25:32Speaker 9: there are a lot of situations where maybe calling is
- 25:34Speaker 9: not the best answer, the best solution to to find success.
- 25:38Speaker 9: But there are a lot of situations we're calling will
- 25:40Speaker 9: bring that bowl into the archery range and be the
- 25:43Speaker 9: thing that does matter. So how do you build that confidence?
- 25:46Speaker 2: It's practicing right now in the off season.
- 25:48Speaker 9: Now, I'm not going to get into like making perfect
- 25:50Speaker 9: cal cals. How you make those?
- 25:51Speaker 7: That's difficult.
- 25:52Speaker 9: We got YouTube videos for that, you know, go search
- 25:55Speaker 9: those up. But I relate this a lot to playing basketball.
- 25:59Speaker 9: The game is where you get to show off how
- 26:01Speaker 9: good you are. Practice is what makes you and builds
- 26:04Speaker 9: how good you are. It's the same thing with archero
- 26:07Speaker 9: cutting and calling. We don't get enough reps out in
- 26:09Speaker 9: the field during September to become good. You need to
- 26:12Speaker 9: do that in the off season, you need to have
- 26:14Speaker 9: enough practice that you're confident when you go to blow
- 26:16Speaker 9: a call, you know exactly how that call is going
- 26:18Speaker 9: to react. You know exactly how to repeat the call
- 26:21Speaker 9: that you want. You know how to make this sound
- 26:22Speaker 9: a calmew and estris, wine, a challenge, bugle, lit ball,
- 26:27Speaker 9: whatever it may be. You've did enough practice that you're
- 26:30Speaker 9: muscle memory you can go out and make that call.
- 26:34Speaker 2: So how do you do that?
- 26:35Speaker 9: Like ideally we recommend off season everybody goes back to
- 26:37Speaker 9: a diaphragm and too combo. Try to get that diaphragm
- 26:40Speaker 9: to work if possible. It allows you to be hands
- 26:42Speaker 9: free as an archer is a muzzloader hunter, so that
- 26:44Speaker 9: you have control over your weapon.
- 26:46Speaker 6: Why you're making calls.
- 26:48Speaker 9: If that doesn't work, you know you got gag reflex
- 26:50Speaker 9: or for some reason you just can't get the hang
- 26:52Speaker 9: of it. We have designed some calls like the easy
- 26:55Speaker 9: Estris Easy one, Easy Sucker on the cow call side
- 26:58Speaker 9: to kind of cut that learning curve down. We've also
- 27:02Speaker 9: designed the Easy Bigler on the Bigle tube side, which
- 27:04Speaker 9: attaches to a lot of our new Beegle tube to
- 27:06Speaker 9: just make that process easier and hopefully build your confidence.
- 27:09Speaker 9: But whatever it is offseason, find something that builds confidence
- 27:13Speaker 9: for you so that when it comes time to the
- 27:16Speaker 9: big show in September, you're willing to make a call
- 27:19Speaker 9: when needed to help your chances to bring that ball
- 27:21Speaker 9: into range.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Well said, Oh gets me excited, like that guy thinks
- 27:27Speaker 4: about calling a lot or something.
- 27:29Speaker 2: I was going to say, I don't really have much
- 27:31Speaker 2: to add to that. Yeah, before we move on to
- 27:35Speaker 2: our next question, I'm going to add it.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Can I add something?
- 27:37Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah? Please? Please?
- 27:39Speaker 1: Why is that funny?
- 27:40Speaker 2: No, we're just out of sync today. It's you know,
- 27:42Speaker 2: it's being Monday.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Oh you think that's what it is. I think that's
- 27:46Speaker 1: the pressure.
- 27:47Speaker 6: Of being live. You know. It provides a little bit
- 27:50Speaker 6: more energy, you know. We Yeah, and I think the
- 27:52Speaker 6: fact that we'd it's that it's it's three thirty on
- 27:55Speaker 6: a Monday. Yeah, yeah, it could be, but we gotta
- 27:58Speaker 6: we gotta rememberable. We've got an audience. They might be
- 28:01Speaker 6: they might not be watching now, but they're out there.
- 28:03Speaker 1: I know, I know, Please, I might I might be
- 28:07Speaker 1: just a little bit low tee because I'm drained from Saturday.
- 28:11Speaker 2: So sorry, audience, But do you have stuff to add
- 28:14Speaker 2: to the calling thing.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Yes, I do.
- 28:17Speaker 6: The best, the best podcast apologize for themselves halfway through.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yeah what I what I like to do. Don't look
- 28:25Speaker 1: at me with those deer loss in the headlights.
- 28:28Speaker 2: No, I just was looking at my face on the screen,
- 28:30Speaker 2: and my face is really red. Looks good red. Look
- 28:36Speaker 2: at my hand. Go ahead, please.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Jason's talking about calling a lot, and I fall in
- 28:45Speaker 1: this trap too. Is like I don't put enough repsent
- 28:48Speaker 1: and I try to get plenty of summertime repsent with
- 28:51Speaker 1: my calls. But I used to. I like to always practice.
- 28:54Speaker 1: It's easy to have that call in your mouth for
- 28:56Speaker 1: ten minutes and have already tried to have blown fifty
- 29:00Speaker 1: calcohols and to then produce a good one. It's a
- 29:03Speaker 1: much harder when your mouth is dry. You just put
- 29:06Speaker 1: one in and you got to make one soft mew.
- 29:09Speaker 1: So I always try to practice that. It's kind of
- 29:11Speaker 1: like doing a cold barrel per shot, right, Like that's
- 29:15Speaker 1: the one you're killing. The animal board challenge, the cold
- 29:18Speaker 1: board challenge, right, same thing here, dry diaphragm challenge. Chuck
- 29:22Speaker 1: it in there, do whatever you gotta do with your
- 29:24Speaker 1: salia to get it ready, moist g in the right
- 29:27Speaker 1: spot and see if you can just make that one
- 29:29Speaker 1: perfect cow mew that'll give you that confidence he was
- 29:33Speaker 1: talking about.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Yeah, how about when you're physically prepping for elk hunting,
- 29:36Speaker 4: when you're climbing a mountain with a rock pack on
- 29:39Speaker 4: or whatever.
- 29:40Speaker 2: You want to get into this next question here?
- 29:42Speaker 4: Oh well no, not necessarily. Here's another way for you though.
- 29:45Speaker 4: Another idea is, while you're shooting your bow, have a
- 29:50Speaker 4: diaphragm in your mouth. Janni, how many times have you
- 29:52Speaker 4: tried stopping an elk at full draw with it some
- 29:56Speaker 4: sort of noise cow cal works really?
- 29:58Speaker 1: Well? I have, but it is one I would probably
- 30:02Speaker 1: just give them the old man look up here.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's nice to have a diy in your
- 30:08Speaker 4: mouth while you're.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Shooting, so that try it. It's good practice. Try it
- 30:11Speaker 3: all well.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Speaking of preparation, and then after this maybe we could
- 30:17Speaker 2: have hit a comment or two please. Speaking of preparation,
- 30:21Speaker 2: our next question comes to us from Adam B. I
- 30:23Speaker 2: want a doll sheep hunt at a local wild sheep fundraiser. Congrats, congrats,
- 30:29Speaker 2: We're all happy for you. I've been doing a fair
- 30:32Speaker 2: bit of hiking with a weighted pack, but where I
- 30:35Speaker 2: live is flatter than a pancake? Do you have any
- 30:37Speaker 2: pointers for me to help get in sheep shape before
- 30:40Speaker 2: my August hunt?
- 30:41Speaker 6: Sheep shape?
- 30:42Speaker 1: This guy must live in Manitoba, where I just was.
- 30:45Speaker 1: It's flat there, Buddy.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Kansas to answer this question, here's rich froning.
- 30:52Speaker 5: Question.
- 30:53Speaker 10: Is I want a doll sheep hunt at a local wild
- 30:55Speaker 10: sheep fundraiser. I've been doing a fair bit of hiking
- 30:58Speaker 10: with a weighted pack. But where if it's flatter than
- 31:00Speaker 10: a pancakes for me to help get in sheep shape
- 31:05Speaker 10: before my August hunt?
- 31:07Speaker 1: Yes, several things use that ruck.
- 31:10Speaker 10: You can step up to a cooler, if you have
- 31:12Speaker 10: a box, if you have a stadium nearby where you
- 31:14Speaker 10: can get on some stairs. You can throw in some squats,
- 31:18Speaker 10: you can throw in some lunges. You can do some
- 31:20Speaker 10: type of intervals where maybe you run, run ruck, pop down,
- 31:26Speaker 10: do some burpies with the thing. But the more you
- 31:29Speaker 10: can move that weight in different ranges of motion. We
- 31:32Speaker 10: like the squat, we like a lunge once again, stepping
- 31:37Speaker 10: forward on a cooler, doing lateral stepovers on a cooler.
- 31:42Speaker 10: There's all kinds of different movements. You can do, but
- 31:45Speaker 10: you're gonna need to build up that leg strength and
- 31:49Speaker 10: good luck in August.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Nice wow, anything to add to that go out and
- 31:57Speaker 2: run one hundred miles.
- 31:59Speaker 5: That don't do it?
- 32:01Speaker 1: Yeah, but if it's a flat hunter, you're still going
- 32:03Speaker 1: to be hurting.
- 32:04Speaker 2: Yeah, there's really nothing that compares us to just stepping
- 32:09Speaker 2: up on things.
- 32:10Speaker 4: Yeah that's right, man, being that you won this hunt
- 32:13Speaker 4: once in a lifetime type thing, most likely, maybe plan
- 32:16Speaker 4: on making a trip out to Colorado and go for
- 32:18Speaker 4: a hike or two.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Maybe a couple weeks before you're hunt.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. If he's not paying for anything, he
- 32:24Speaker 1: should fly out to some high country and do some
- 32:28Speaker 1: mega hiking. That's a great.
- 32:29Speaker 4: Definitely try and get up to the elevation and yeah,
- 32:31Speaker 4: put a pack on. I mean, you can work on
- 32:34Speaker 4: a step on a cooler all day long, but nothing
- 32:37Speaker 4: gets you trained in the mountains more than just being
- 32:40Speaker 4: in the mountains.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Yeah, make sure you got some sheep feet trained up too.
- 32:44Speaker 2: And it's nice because he knows when he's going sheep hunting,
- 32:48Speaker 2: so he knows when he can stop working out. See
- 32:51Speaker 2: the rest of us are all sort of like floating
- 32:55Speaker 2: around here waiting for the sheep hunt. But he has
- 32:57Speaker 2: a finish line in sight when he can just go
- 32:59Speaker 2: back to being a total slob.
- 33:03Speaker 3: After the hunt.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly right, just let it all hang out.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Yeah, just suffer, suffer for a couple of Months' good question,
- 33:10Speaker 2: you honest? Do you have any any comments here?
- 33:12Speaker 7: These?
- 33:13Speaker 2: This is our stand in for comments from the chat.
- 33:16Speaker 2: It's a new new thing we're doing on not live
- 33:19Speaker 2: media to Radio Live.
- 33:23Speaker 1: We recently have done a new it's not a new series.
- 33:27Speaker 1: We've we've added some episodes to this series, Mediator Experiences.
- 33:31Speaker 1: We did what it takes to lose zero. We did
- 33:35Speaker 1: one called the brush Gun. Have we released anything else yet?
- 33:40Speaker 3: Two seventy seven Fury?
- 33:41Speaker 1: All right, the seventy seven Fury. We're random basically told
- 33:45Speaker 1: us about it to seventy seven Fury, and then we
- 33:47Speaker 1: took that cartridge and shot a lot of a bunch
- 33:50Speaker 1: of a bunch of different mediums in super slow motion,
- 33:53Speaker 1: which was fun. But we didn't do it wrong. According
- 33:58Speaker 1: to a lot of these comments here on YouTube, Eric
- 34:01Speaker 1: AA five to one says, you all missed the point
- 34:04Speaker 1: of a brush gun. It's to carry, walk and hunt
- 34:07Speaker 1: in the brush. Not I think he missed the word
- 34:11Speaker 1: shoot through brush, short light, easy to get on target,
- 34:15Speaker 1: no glass thirty thirty forty five, seventy forty four, Mag
- 34:19Speaker 1: three fifty seven. See a theme here, Southeast hunter. Here
- 34:23Speaker 1: would so thick thirty yards is a long shot at
- 34:26Speaker 1: time guns, at bowl range, hunting, clearcut, timber lots.
- 34:32Speaker 2: So you did get it wrong.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Great point.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Yeah, which I think that we spoke to that in
- 34:38Speaker 1: our brushgun video.
- 34:40Speaker 2: There are multiple definitions.
- 34:41Speaker 1: And that not only is it meant to be able
- 34:45Speaker 1: to be the gun easily manipulated in brush country, but
- 34:51Speaker 1: that the bullet has to be it has to perform
- 34:54Speaker 1: well in the brush. I'm not going to tell you
- 34:56Speaker 1: the outcome of our brush gun video. Go watch it.
- 35:00Speaker 2: I've got one here that's sort of long, similar lines.
- 35:02Speaker 2: It reads, shut up Randal Randall's getting a little more
- 35:07Speaker 2: annoying every episode. Here's another one. Doctor Randall is insufferable.
- 35:12Speaker 2: I mute it when he opens his mouth. Good thing.
- 35:14Speaker 2: The questions were posted at the bottom of the screen.
- 35:17Speaker 2: It's obviously he's trying to win the who can be
- 35:18Speaker 2: most in love with him self contest that nobody has
- 35:21Speaker 2: for And then one more here, it's find a good
- 35:25Speaker 2: one here.
- 35:27Speaker 3: Get a positive one?
- 35:27Speaker 2: Eh yeah, yeah.
- 35:32Speaker 6: Or you know, he doesn't have to be positive as
- 35:34Speaker 6: long as it's insaneful.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Randall, What an idiot? Okay, yeah, Randall, classic me generation
- 35:40Speaker 2: not getting what they deserve. There's another what an idiot?
- 35:42Speaker 2: Doctor Randall should go back to questions.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't understand why they why they don't like you.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Is it because you are the smartest guy in the
- 35:51Speaker 1: room and they just gotta they just gotta try to
- 35:53Speaker 1: take down.
- 35:53Speaker 2: No, it's because I'm conceited. It's because I'm conceited. They
- 35:59Speaker 2: hate you see right through me because they ain't you.
- 36:01Speaker 2: They know what I'm thinking and what I think of myself.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Well, don't read those comments.
- 36:07Speaker 2: We got another question here. This one comes Phil. I
- 36:10Speaker 2: got you with that transition. Got another question here. This
- 36:14Speaker 2: is from a meat eater Trivia All Star Questions submitter
- 36:18Speaker 2: Leland hart Hey. He says, I lead a local conservation group.
- 36:22Speaker 2: I'm always talking up hunting and angling to people I meet.
- 36:25Speaker 2: For some reason, this appears to make me a magnet
- 36:27Speaker 2: for people telling me about how they've broken game loss.
- 36:30Speaker 2: It's happened at least three times. Poachers apparently see my
- 36:33Speaker 2: BHA and meet eater merchant. Think I'm going to tell
- 36:36Speaker 2: this guy about unlicensed night hunting in a day hunting
- 36:38Speaker 2: only state for game out of season, or let me
- 36:42Speaker 2: tell you how I pulled a fast one by hunting
- 36:43Speaker 2: against regulations and got away with it. How would the
- 36:47Speaker 2: meat Eater team deal with confessions of wrongdoing told to
- 36:50Speaker 2: you in earnest? And to answer this question, here's Chester Floyd.
- 36:55Speaker 11: Oh yes, buddy, Chester Floyd here coming at you from
- 36:59Speaker 11: Wiscon And I about another chettaquit for you. This week's
- 37:04Speaker 11: chettaquit comes to us from Leland Hart. Leland writes, and
- 37:08Speaker 11: what the hell is from going on with this? I
- 37:12Speaker 11: have a chettiquet question? Can we stroud hunter, angler and
- 37:16Speaker 11: outdoorsmans talk about giants?
- 37:20Speaker 2: H Yeah?
- 37:22Speaker 11: And I'm always talking up hunting and angling with the
- 37:25Speaker 11: people I meet. For some reason, this appears to make
- 37:29Speaker 11: me that's a magnet for people to tell me about
- 37:32Speaker 11: how they've and.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Now they're going to know and remember, now they're going
- 37:35Speaker 2: to know that I read an abbreviated version of the question.
- 37:37Speaker 11: Coachure is apparently.
- 37:40Speaker 6: Everything's going fine.
- 37:43Speaker 11: About unlicensed night hunting in a day hunting only state
- 37:48Speaker 11: for game that's out of season, and I don't have
- 37:50Speaker 11: a tag for anyways and quotes. Let me tell you
- 37:55Speaker 11: how I pulled a fast one by hunting against regulations
- 38:00Speaker 11: on a military base and got away with a trespassing such.
- 38:05Speaker 6: Any real consequences, and so I get to be the standard.
- 38:10Speaker 11: I tried to make this every educational moment. When it happens.
- 38:14Speaker 11: At least one of the people was just ignorant of
- 38:16Speaker 11: the law. The others seemed oddly proud of their misbehavior.
- 38:21Speaker 11: I didn't hear anything actionable by law enforcement, just historical.
- 38:27Speaker 11: I did this a while ago.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Stuff.
- 38:30Speaker 11: Obviously, if I anticipated a crime, I would report it.
- 38:34Speaker 11: But it is a weird spot to be in. How
- 38:37Speaker 11: would the meat Eater team deal with confessions of wrongdoing
- 38:41Speaker 11: told to you in earnest down and you goes redneck
- 38:58Speaker 11: crowd pulo kinds of people good and sound, scept a
- 39:03Speaker 11: couple of boys who were up to no good causing all.
- 39:07Speaker 7: Kinds of trouble in the hood. Feeling your approachabule guys wild,
- 39:15Speaker 7: the boys spear the poaching cries. Sitting here thinking on
- 39:20Speaker 7: what you must do?
- 39:21Speaker 12: How bad confessions told to you.
- 39:26Speaker 7: Like guy pulled the fast one on the neighbor's plays,
- 39:34Speaker 7: and I pulled fast one on the military base and.
- 39:41Speaker 12: I pulled the fast one. I thought you should know
- 39:48Speaker 12: when I pulled a fast one, call me no good.
- 39:53Speaker 5: Cub excellent camera work.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Yeah, you can feel the emotions.
- 40:09Speaker 13: And it's story flies or he's telling white lies. You
- 40:12Speaker 13: gotta boot him in.
- 40:14Speaker 7: His please you say all those acts.
- 40:17Speaker 13: If bone of fire facts, I'm gonna burn you down someday. Yeah,
- 40:26Speaker 13: they're gonna burn you down someday. Oh yeah, they're gonna
- 40:34Speaker 13: burn you down someday.
- 40:38Speaker 5: Is he just memorized?
- 40:39Speaker 6: I think, so this is insane.
- 40:41Speaker 2: I know it's maybe it's written on the top of
- 40:43Speaker 2: his guitar.
- 40:45Speaker 1: That's why it's so big.
- 40:49Speaker 13: You goes red neck crowd watching with all kinds of
- 40:54Speaker 13: people in sound.
- 40:57Speaker 5: Said a question.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Good And.
- 41:12Speaker 11: I hope you like that little song and hopefully it
- 41:15Speaker 11: gave you a little bit of ideas on what to do.
- 41:20Speaker 11: But I think teaching people and making it an educational moment,
- 41:24Speaker 11: really letting them know, like what the heck, dude, like
- 41:28Speaker 11: you cannot do that stuff and that's going to come
- 41:30Speaker 11: back to burn you in Why are you telling me this?
- 41:33Speaker 11: But if somebody has done something like crazy bad which
- 41:38Speaker 11: these guys have, but like just insane, like you've got
- 41:43Speaker 11: to report it to the d n r Uh. They're
- 41:46Speaker 11: in a bar drinking and stuff in this circumstance. So
- 41:49Speaker 11: I'm not quite sure you know how truthful this is,
- 41:52Speaker 11: but it's really use your best judgment, make it educational.
- 41:56Speaker 11: Let them know that they have done wrong.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Well said, Well done man.
- 42:06Speaker 2: What do you guys thinking to add? Old Chastaro can't
- 42:10Speaker 2: top that? But he's right, ghanis.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Uh no, yeah, I would not worry about keeping them
- 42:20Speaker 1: as friends and just get right in their face. Let
- 42:23Speaker 1: him know what's up. Wrong is wrong.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Tough love, tough love.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Baby, you had some more funny comments for me, you know.
- 42:35Speaker 2: I've got another one here. Randall looks nothing like he sounds.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I would have guessed an old, gray haired man with
- 42:44Speaker 2: glasses in his late sixties. There's another one. I figured
- 42:49Speaker 2: he based off Randall's voice. I figured he was twenty
- 42:52Speaker 2: five years older than he appears to be. That's whack.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Everyone says, uh, sorry, Randall, you're not a doctor. Just
- 42:59Speaker 2: didn't with a degree.
- 43:01Speaker 4: Oh that stings a little eh yeah, yeah, so.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 43:07Speaker 1: I let's still a compliment. Sandwich here Hey, Y're honest.
- 43:11Speaker 1: I thoroughly enjoy when you host radio radio meat Eater
- 43:14Speaker 1: Radio Live.
- 43:16Speaker 6: The compliments about you.
- 43:18Speaker 1: It reminds me of old meat Eater. I'm not saying
- 43:20Speaker 1: there's anything wrong with the way meat Eater is now,
- 43:22Speaker 1: but when you host, it has a very like, hey man,
- 43:26Speaker 1: we did this, it was awesome. You should try this
- 43:29Speaker 1: feel to it anyway, keep being awesome? Does that make
- 43:32Speaker 1: you feel any better?
- 43:34Speaker 2: No, because I think they're comparing it to not that
- 43:38Speaker 2: there's anything wrong with the new meat Eater where they
- 43:40Speaker 2: talk about Bennegan's. But I think that's the new meat Eater.
- 43:46Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe that's just more conceited talk on
- 43:51Speaker 2: my part.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Don't be so conceited, Corey.
- 43:55Speaker 2: You want to how many questions we got left on
- 43:57Speaker 2: the list here? Oh gosh, what do we got?
- 44:00Speaker 10: Two?
- 44:00Speaker 2: Three?
- 44:01Speaker 3: Got a few more?
- 44:02Speaker 2: No, I was wondering how many you wanted me to
- 44:04Speaker 2: read from? Oh?
- 44:05Speaker 1: Well, I think we got a little bit of time.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, how about this one? Uh? Should I read
- 44:09Speaker 2: the question or just play the video?
- 44:12Speaker 6: How about we just played the video? Let's play the
- 44:14Speaker 6: video Phil with our like it's going to be the
- 44:16Speaker 6: one video where they don't the question first, let's find
- 44:19Speaker 6: out here's Tyler Jones.
- 44:20Speaker 14: The question is how do I scout for bucks nailed
- 44:23Speaker 14: for shooting those bucks in the first three weeks of October.
- 44:27Speaker 14: I have no major ag food sources. Instead, it's oak trees.
- 44:31Speaker 14: There's two ways that I could look at this and
- 44:33Speaker 14: do most of the time. And let's break it down
- 44:35Speaker 14: into the first two weeks, which are going to be
- 44:38Speaker 14: more patterable stages of a deer's life, and then that
- 44:41Speaker 14: last week of the three week span in October. You're
- 44:44Speaker 14: getting towards the middle of October and into the twenties,
- 44:46Speaker 14: and deer get a little more pre run, little more
- 44:49Speaker 14: testosterone increase there. So we'll talk about those in that order.
- 44:53Speaker 14: The first section the patternable deer. These deer are not
- 44:56Speaker 14: going to move super far. They're going to be near bedding,
- 44:58Speaker 14: so thick areas, and then they're going to be feeding
- 45:01Speaker 14: on oaks in close proximity, not moving a ton in
- 45:04Speaker 14: the daylight.
- 45:05Speaker 5: Usually it makes them pretty tough.
- 45:07Speaker 14: Trail cameras are a big part of finding these deer
- 45:10Speaker 14: before this moment actually happens, right so August September, getting
- 45:14Speaker 14: trail cameras out near thick batting where there's oak trees.
- 45:19Speaker 14: Another thing you can do is when you actually go
- 45:21Speaker 14: in to hunt is listen carefully because we're looking for
- 45:25Speaker 14: the first oak trees to start dropping, which doesn't happen
- 45:28Speaker 14: at the first of October sometimes depending on the year.
- 45:31Speaker 14: So we're looking to hopefully get those deer that are
- 45:34Speaker 14: moving to the same sound that we're hearing in the woods,
- 45:37Speaker 14: which is acorns dropping and getting under those first few trees.
- 45:40Speaker 14: The second part of this is the rut or pre
- 45:43Speaker 14: rut rather but rut like movement where we get into
- 45:46Speaker 14: a pinch point near a scrape, and that's a situation
- 45:50Speaker 14: I like a lot. In fact, in twenty twenty, I
- 45:52Speaker 14: killed a deer on the twenty third of October just
- 45:55Speaker 14: outside that window. But he had showed up on a
- 45:57Speaker 14: scrape for the first time on this trail camera on
- 45:59Speaker 14: the s sixteenth. So as we get cold weather in
- 46:02Speaker 14: that third week, we're looking to shoot deer dear scrapes
- 46:05Speaker 14: in pinch points, banking on the fact that they're moving
- 46:08Speaker 14: just a little bit more before dark.
- 46:10Speaker 3: Hope this helps.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Thanks for that great answer, Thank you, Tom Tyler.
- 46:17Speaker 4: And I was distracted by all the awesome taxi Durmy
- 46:19Speaker 4: behind him.
- 46:20Speaker 3: I wonder if he's in.
- 46:21Speaker 1: His house or if he's at a garage. Maybe he's
- 46:26Speaker 1: got a lot of bucks. And those boys like to
- 46:27Speaker 1: do taxi.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Jeremy, Yes they do. I'm about to go pick up
- 46:33Speaker 2: a little piece of tax We.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Can tell us about it.
- 46:36Speaker 2: It's a shoulder mount of that bear I killed in
- 46:40Speaker 2: Alaska two years ago.
- 46:41Speaker 3: Oh nice, another shoulder mounted bear.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Cool.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Yeah, well the other shoulder mounted bears in Chilli's office.
- 46:47Speaker 3: Yeah, that's more of a neck mount too.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you're just gonna be I actually have come
- 46:52Speaker 1: to like those neck mounts. I saw something in Canada
- 46:54Speaker 1: when I was up there, and I'm coming to like
- 46:57Speaker 1: them because I like them because they're manageable and they're.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Still I already have a big bear rug on the wall,
- 47:02Speaker 2: don't really have room for another one.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Well, should take it down and put it on the floor.
- 47:06Speaker 2: This is a wall pedestal, so it incorporates more of
- 47:10Speaker 2: the sternum and chest, so it'll be coming out of
- 47:13Speaker 2: the wall, and you know, it's sort of it looks
- 47:15Speaker 2: more like a like amount of deer where you get
- 47:18Speaker 2: some of that because some of the bear neck mounts
- 47:21Speaker 2: they just look like you stuck it on the wall.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Arms included No, no, no, but I'm still excited at
- 47:31Speaker 2: a big nog. And so what I really wanted to
- 47:33Speaker 2: look at and remember was the size of its head.
- 47:36Speaker 2: And I saw a photo of it, and it looks
- 47:38Speaker 2: pretty spot on when I compare it to the photos.
- 47:41Speaker 1: From would that run you.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Do on Doug numbers?
- 47:45Speaker 3: Does your wife like twelve hundred dollars?
- 47:48Speaker 5: Oh that's it's not bad?
- 47:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I thought it was reasonable. Yeah, but that's
- 47:55Speaker 2: also why I don't do any other tax dur me.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Mm hmm. It's expensive.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Man.
- 48:03Speaker 1: It is always said, rather go on another hunt, then
- 48:06Speaker 1: get a get a buck mounted. All right, Can we
- 48:10Speaker 1: ask the beer drinking question now?
- 48:13Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, Travis t And this actually is a real one.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Why do I feel like everybody off camera is drinking beers?
- 48:21Speaker 2: And why are they hiding it?
- 48:23Speaker 1: This was a question on a on a meteor Roast
- 48:27Speaker 1: episode that was Phil kracking a beer. He's not hiding it.
- 48:31Speaker 1: We don't hide it. Who do you want to take this?
- 48:33Speaker 1: You want me to take it? Why don't you take it?
- 48:35Speaker 1: I'll start you feel inspired. Nobody off camera is drinking beers.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Anybody off camera is working, so they're they're they're not
- 48:49Speaker 1: drinking beers. In the rare cases that we are drinking
- 48:54Speaker 1: beers and there is some sort of video recording going on,
- 48:58Speaker 1: it's usually towards the end the day. Maybe your roast
- 49:03Speaker 1: episode is a glaring yeah, an anomaly. But for the
- 49:09Speaker 1: most part, the cameras are put away, the days wrapped up.
- 49:12Speaker 1: We're not working anymore, we're relaxing, but something still funny
- 49:17Speaker 1: happens or whatever, and we get a phone out and
- 49:19Speaker 1: it's recorded. Because I've gotten that a lot too, where
- 49:24Speaker 1: they're just like, man, you're so fired up and happy,
- 49:27Speaker 1: you must be drinking beers. I'm not not drinking beers
- 49:32Speaker 1: on camera.
- 49:33Speaker 6: Also, that can I just cracked was a sparkling juice drink.
- 49:37Speaker 2: That's because I drink all the beers.
- 49:42Speaker 1: What do you say to that, Corey, You've been on
- 49:44Speaker 1: some production sets now recently in the last year in
- 49:47Speaker 1: your new role.
- 49:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I can't say I ever saw an open container
- 49:53Speaker 4: while we were working. But afterwards, now, because you gotta
- 49:57Speaker 4: work hard, you gotta play hard. Yeah, like we've cracked
- 50:00Speaker 4: a couple of cold ones afterwards, but yeah, never during.
- 50:05Speaker 1: Yep, nothing to add. Randall Randall's not hiding it, as
- 50:11Speaker 1: you guys can see.
- 50:11Speaker 6: And also I'm not being whole holier than thou. At
- 50:14Speaker 6: my previous job, the office was attached to a brewery.
- 50:18Speaker 6: They had a deal with them that I got a
- 50:20Speaker 6: free beer every day, and on Thursdays we got three
- 50:25Speaker 6: free beers what not. Every every Thursday, the first Thursday
- 50:28Speaker 6: of every month, we got three free beers. So but
- 50:31Speaker 6: and I also worked the graveyard shift, so I would
- 50:34Speaker 6: start off my shift by drinking a double I p a,
- 50:38Speaker 6: then go edit audio for eight hours, and then on
- 50:41Speaker 6: Thursday the first Thursdays. I mean, I don't know how
- 50:44Speaker 6: I got worked out, but I did. Yeah, Yeah, I
- 50:46Speaker 6: was good at it.
- 50:47Speaker 2: I worked. I worked across the tracks from that same brewery, Phil,
- 50:51Speaker 2: I didn't get any free beers.
- 50:53Speaker 6: I'm sorry I missed that brewery. I was thinking about it,
- 50:55Speaker 6: but I did go there a lot. So shout out
- 50:58Speaker 6: to the Draft Forcks in Missoula.
- 51:00Speaker 1: Oh buddy, I've never been to their brewery, but I
- 51:03Speaker 1: sure do you like their beer?
- 51:04Speaker 2: Homeboy from Home, Away from Home, love it. We got
- 51:12Speaker 2: another question here that goes to Jordan. But and I
- 51:16Speaker 2: don't know if she's repeated the question, So I'll just
- 51:18Speaker 2: say play the tape.
- 51:19Speaker 8: Phil got a question from Cameron Bocoff nice and he
- 51:25Speaker 8: just bought his first white tail tag and wants to
- 51:27Speaker 8: know what are some must haves for first white tail hunt.
- 51:31Speaker 8: So what I would suggest, more than anything tangible is
- 51:36Speaker 8: shoot whatever weapon that you're going to use. Become super
- 51:40Speaker 8: super proficient with that. In the end, that's what it's
- 51:44Speaker 8: gonna come down to, and it's going to probably happen
- 51:46Speaker 8: pretty quick. So being proficient and comfortable with whatever you
- 51:49Speaker 8: use and is probably the most important. Beyond that, whitetail
- 51:53Speaker 8: is a pretty stationary sport, so I'll get some good
- 51:56Speaker 8: clothes to be able to sit longer.
- 51:59Speaker 6: So that's what I got for.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Top notch advice from a white tail outfitter.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Let me add to that, please, safety harness.
- 52:12Speaker 1: M m. That's a good one.
- 52:15Speaker 3: If in a tree, yeah, safety first.
- 52:18Speaker 2: Don't go climbing trees without safety harnesses, folks.
- 52:22Speaker 1: And these days they have the lifelines as well. It's
- 52:29Speaker 1: basically a static rope that's attached above your tree stand
- 52:33Speaker 1: and at the base and so that you where you're
- 52:35Speaker 1: attached the whole time while you're climbing, must have pieces
- 52:42Speaker 1: of gear for his first white tail hunt.
- 52:45Speaker 6: Hm.
- 52:46Speaker 2: If you'd asked nineteen year old Randall, I would have
- 52:49Speaker 2: told you three bottles of scent killer.
- 52:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:54Speaker 1: I don't really believe in that too much either, must
- 52:57Speaker 1: have pieces of gear for his first white tail man,
- 53:03Speaker 1: it's so very I don't have no idea where his
- 53:05Speaker 1: hunt's going to be, how cold he's going.
- 53:07Speaker 2: To be, Yeah, I mean how hot he's going to be,
- 53:09Speaker 2: depending on where he's hunting. I'd say a fifty pounds
- 53:11Speaker 2: bag of corn, some old apples.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Maybe maybe it's really vague. Sharp knife. You gotta be
- 53:20Speaker 1: able to gotten gut chop up your deer after he
- 53:23Speaker 1: gets it. But what else to help him be successful? Binoculars?
- 53:28Speaker 1: You don't really have to have buyos in the white
- 53:31Speaker 1: tail woods.
- 53:33Speaker 4: Something to help keep you a patient, assuming maybe in
- 53:36Speaker 4: a tree.
- 53:38Speaker 3: Maybe a good.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Book, yeah, a good book and some good snacks.
- 53:42Speaker 2: We're just one earbud to listen to meat Eat Radio live.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't support that.
- 53:50Speaker 6: We get a lot of people in the chat saying
- 53:52Speaker 6: that they're sitting in a tree stand or sitting against
- 53:55Speaker 6: a tree waiting for turkeys listening to radio. That seems
- 53:58Speaker 6: irresponsible if you're trying to be in a fish but hey,
- 54:00Speaker 6: thanks for listening.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Might get you in the mood though, Right.
- 54:05Speaker 1: You're already out there. If you're not in the mood,
- 54:09Speaker 1: might not be the right thing for you.
- 54:14Speaker 6: Point.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Yeah, they listen to you, honest. If you're not happy
- 54:17Speaker 2: to be out there, go home. Yeah, go pick up
- 54:20Speaker 2: golf save it for the rest of us. That's right,
- 54:25Speaker 2: you got more, Randall. I think that's it for questions, Phil,
- 54:30Speaker 2: How are we doing on time here?
- 54:31Speaker 6: We're doing great on time. We can we can uh
- 54:33Speaker 6: head for the final lap.
- 54:34Speaker 1: Here, but there's there's no uh, there's no chat room questions.
- 54:39Speaker 6: Mogor says, we're doing a great job. Keep it up.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Thanks more.
- 54:43Speaker 3: We really needed that one.
- 54:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to look what an idiot doctor Randall?
- 54:49Speaker 7: Uh?
- 54:51Speaker 1: Hold on, I think we need to look at your
- 54:52Speaker 1: meat eat or roasts episode.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Ry we all love to hate. I mute it when
- 54:57Speaker 2: he opens his mouth.
- 55:00Speaker 6: Is that one real?
- 55:01Speaker 2: What's up with the wig? Yeah? No, someone actually did
- 55:04Speaker 2: say these are all real? All right, Well, before we go,
- 55:10Speaker 2: we have an important call to action starting next week

- 55:18Speaker 1: Okay, hold on, hold on. I'm sorry I had to interrupt,
- 55:21Speaker 1: but since we're not doing this live, it's fine.

- 55:24Speaker 1: I am going to compliment sandwich to help with your conceitedness,
- 55:28Speaker 1: to bring you up, because I want you to leave today,

- 56:37Speaker 1: Anyways. Randall always adds extra to everything he does. Okay,
- 56:42Speaker 1: here's here's another one. In quotes you like, I said,
- 56:47Speaker 1: don't don't eat all of them? Is that a movie quote?
- 56:51Speaker 2: No, that's from when I told them not to eat
- 56:53Speaker 2: the potatoes. Oh okay, because some of the potatoes were well.
- 56:56Speaker 1: He says, I want another episode with Randall next one.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Danel cracks me up, like, if you have four potatoes,
- 57:03Speaker 1: pick the one that looks most done. What a good sport?
- 57:05Speaker 3: Great sport?
- 57:06Speaker 2: See Doctor Randall's the worst stop it.
- 57:10Speaker 6: Jamis says I was moving on. Jameson says, I would
- 57:13Speaker 6: like to thank whatever mechanism at Meat Eater, and maybe
- 57:15Speaker 6: even just the universe for giving Randal the rain and
- 57:18Speaker 6: more importantly, the confidence. I'm stressing that part editorially to
- 57:23Speaker 6: follow through with whatever meta concept that just had me
- 57:25Speaker 6: laughing to tears in my truck.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Randall's previous comments about being depressed after losing Trivia and
- 57:31Speaker 2: coming home to his wife all said is honestly concerning
