- 0:00Welcome to Season 2 of Raising the Curve, a conversation for women who want to
- 0:06learn more about money, via money. For the future they want to have. The pursuit
- 0:11for financial confidence and increasing your wealth should be a simple one. So
- 0:16this is a place for you to learn about investing in finance in a non-scary or
- 0:20intimidating way. Thank you for being here and for listening because together we
- 0:25really can raise the curve. Vic turned up today in a new outfit which looks great
- 0:31by the way but she hadn't taken a tag or she just ended up all around now. Okay okay no one cares
- 0:37about our life let's talk about finance and investing. So today we're talking about
- 0:42a structural growth industry as a whole and this I remember you saying is kind of
- 0:47like a rising tide so it's like having all of the boats on a big wave and by being
- 0:54in a structural growth industry unless you're doing something incredibly wrong or you know
- 0:59making terrible decisions you're going to be growing naturally because you're on a wave
- 1:04that's rising. Do I say that right? Yeah yeah yeah so it's what either boats are on that wave
- 1:09will rise so you really have to stuff up to not be growing in line with the industry. When we
- 1:15talk about structural we mean it's a trend that is multi decades or multi-generational it's
- 1:22long therefore you can take a long-term view and invest in it and know that you're going to be
- 1:26benefiting for multiple years. So it's when we have changes in technology like the streaming
- 1:33video on demand or say online payments e-commerce that kind of thing. It's multi-decade trends
- 1:40that are still only a small portion of the overall pie and going to continue to grow.
- 1:46That makes sense. Yeah so what would be a few other structural growth industries? So there's
- 1:50streaming platforms. Would you say transport, like change in transport in terms of
- 1:56uvres, uvres, etc. Is that a long-term structural gap? Yeah yeah yeah. Would it be...
- 2:00I probably think think a bit more a bit bigger like like climate change and reducing carbon
- 2:07emissions and like there is just so many companies that are benefiting from that or a part of that
- 2:15trend. What other massive ones are there? Like health and wellness, I would say. Particularly during
- 2:20COVID everyone really concerned about you know healthy living and being outdoors and all that.
- 2:25In all that. In all that. In all that. In all that. Yeah baby boomers, you know that trends
- 2:29been going on for ages. What about the new baby boomer? Like the idea of people living babies in
- 2:34COVID? Yeah. Is that a new boomer trend? Or my friends are having babies right now. Yes it's
- 2:39obviously age and stage but there's a lot of them that we're going to go overseas or we're going to
- 2:43get married and that obviously can't happen. So now they're like okay let's just prioritize
- 2:47the baby making and we'll do that other stuff later. So that's really... You would have been at
- 2:51the start of the structural growth industry at the very start of COVID if you thought this might
- 2:56be going for a while, let's have kids. You know because it was suck if you got to a year into lockdowns
- 3:00and then you decided let's have babies because you don't know how much longer that lockdown's going
- 3:03to be. You know all those people who decided the very start. Yeah. Let's just have a baby now.
- 3:08It was funny. I heard one guy say we were talking about this trend and it worked and he was like
- 3:15I think that everyone that's having babies in lockdown does not have kids already in lockdown.
- 3:19Because obviously they don't know how to do this thing baby. He was just like there's no way I would
- 3:24be having more children right now because he's already got two and it's just like you're trying
- 3:28to be teacher as well as work and it's just a nightmare. I guess the first couple of years in terms
- 3:32of newborn baby one one and a half. As you said it gets like two or three image and that would be
- 3:38quite hard but if you're getting through those baby baby years during lockdown it's quite amazing
- 3:43to be able to have your partner at home as well. That's pretty that's time that people will never
- 3:48get again. Yeah I mean it's quite amazing we will look back on this and I often thought about this
- 3:54telling our children that the whole world just stopped for a couple months. It's quite incredible
- 4:01really. I would find that so hard to believe pre-COVID if someone had told me that it happened.
- 4:07I mean I don't want to relate it to walk because it's absolutely not completely different
- 4:10but we just can't comprehend. If you have to go to war and fight for your country like that just
- 4:17is so hard to comprehend for us but that's just what they did back in the day and then it's
- 4:21same here it's our children and you know generations to come we'll find it so weird that you could
- 4:26just put a pause button on the whole world no travel no going to work. Such a wig out. Anyway COVID
- 4:35at a site. Yeah we have enough of that. Definitely. So this this this structural trend that we're
- 4:41talking about has grown a lot during COVID though yes yes yeah no it definitely has and it comes
- 4:45back to one one of your most classic lines of oh no if only you could after pay your house. Oh imagine
- 4:52how good would that be just trip away at it on the side. So I think I really want to unpack
- 4:56this further which is you're talking about the buy now pay later sector as a whole and how
- 5:02it's evolved how it's become quite ingrained in our lives and how as a consumer it's bad
- 5:09like using it you and I get you and I using it and being in debt I think is is not good
- 5:14but then from an investment point of view it's actually it's actually great because it's growing
- 5:18and it's and it's part of the structural growth industry so we'll touch on touch on both things.
- 5:23I guess for those of you who don't know find out pay later as the name suggests you pay for something
- 5:28at a retailer you can do it online or in store now and you pay over equal instalments so you get
- 5:34the product but you're still paying it off over might be four weeks six weeks but it doesn't cost
- 5:39any more to you so if it's at a hundred dollar dress you're going to be paying twenty five dollars
- 5:44of four weeks you're not going to be paying any more than hundred dollars. It's not an interest it's
- 5:48not a lot you're not paying more in the long run and they make money the buy now pay later companies
- 5:53so you're after pay how does the shop yeah so they pay a fee to after pay for example or any of
- 6:00the buy now pay later companies because what they're seeing is increased conversion so if you
- 6:06really have to learn to have breakfast before we podcast did you hear that okay I'm just going
- 6:11to have a quick let me just have a bit of my opinion not yet it's only 10 o'clock in the morning
- 6:16yeah so I've done eight breakfast no I'm just yeah well I just I do and normally do
- 6:22intermittent fasting yeah so I don't eat until about deliver but there's some mornings when I
- 6:26have a huge dinner with my stomach kind of stretches and then in the morning I get a hungry hungry
- 6:32stomach so sorry about that so I've lost my train of thought now but you were talking about how
- 6:36all of the shops or people who use after pay all let their customers use after pay yeah they pay
- 6:41a fee to be a part of so my sister for example she has her own retail company her tapper yeah
- 6:47beautiful clothes we love shout out and they see huge increased conversion when when they launched
- 6:54these buy now pay later companies on their platform so when they introduce the option to pay
- 6:59and installments over a set number of weeks you saw people being like oh cool well I
- 7:04instead of buying one juice for a hundred dollars I can buy four dresses for a hundred dollars
- 7:09and pay them off over time I think it's a great concept though I know it's not great from a
- 7:14customer being in depth standpoint but big ticket items like a beautiful dress from Harris tapper
- 7:19yes or really nice sunglasses that you've wanted for ages it's actually your savings take a scary
- 7:25hit if you go and drop a few hundred or four hundred dollars on something in one go yeah but if you
- 7:31can't afford it you shouldn't be buying it that's a great because you are still spending that amount
- 7:37and when you get this increased conversion of your now but instead of buying one one item you're
- 7:41buying four you're actually just buying four times the amount totally you're just you're becoming
- 7:45more in debt and you've still got to pay off that debt before you can invest so it's it's kind of
- 7:49what I call unhelpful debt you got helpful debt like a mortgage which helps you grow your wealth
- 7:54and lead to you can lead to significant gains whereas unhelpful debt is debt like this kind of
- 8:00day or something you're still paying off I'm reused to once just for interest sake I kind of
- 8:06bought I bought I think it was tickets to an event or something I remember four weeks later I was
- 8:10like hey what's this money still coming out of my bank account and I was like oh my gosh I still
- 8:14am paying that off I think if you can't afford it up front you should be asking yourself do you
- 8:18really need it and obviously for essential things like your medical procedures or something it can
- 8:25be really helpful you can use buy now pay later for yeah so you can use it services yeah that's
- 8:29incredible so you realize that you're this and they're going to introduce it into like travel so
- 8:33you can buy a line I don't know if you could do it at the supermarket and you take all your
- 8:37groceries and then you pay it off throughout the way yeah and there's actually really interesting
- 8:41companies coming about now as well it's there's one called it's about to IPO and it's called before
- 8:46pay and so this is kind of this is this is now like a trend on a trend I just need to own my
- 8:51investing list I'm just I'm just using this as an example of of how these industries can be
- 8:56really fast moving and there's growth there's a growth in growth and so this is before pay what
- 9:01happens is that say you get paid on the 15th day of each month you can actually get your pay
- 9:08earlier so that's dangerous yeah so instead of getting say a thousand dollars on the 15th of
- 9:15the month every month maybe on the first of the month you're like shit I actually really need to buy
- 9:18something can I before pay and I get paid my pay before pay day effectively oh I mean I can
- 9:24understand why that would be beneficial for some people yeah but so dangerous because then
- 9:29imagine if you're you've got six weeks between I'll totally and you've got to make a smaller amount
- 9:34last and it's just all about managing your cash flow you need to have less outgoing and more
- 9:39income in order to be able to invest in the first place so if you're spending a lot you just need
- 9:44to re-evaluate your your spending habits really and we've said this before is just literally sleep
- 9:49on it if you want to buy something stop sleep on it and come back because a lot of decisions are
- 9:55made impulsively and you want instant gratification and being millennials gosh I'm guilty of it you
- 10:00want something now and that's why after pay has been such a success or any of the the buy now pay
- 10:05later companies because we're in a stage and age is age where we want everything now it's very
- 10:11immediate yeah whereas generations ago they would save up to buy something whereas we want it now
- 10:17there's also a lot around the hype of something a friend of mine was looking out at a buying a
- 10:22property and he was explaining to me how options can be really beneficial for the person selling
- 10:29because the hype of people being there and other people wanting it it's like just that emotive
- 10:35competition yeah like if you were planning on spending the X amount but then everyone else wants it
- 10:40well I'll go 200,000 above what I was planning and then you're like oh my god why did I do that
- 10:43I think the buy now pay later in a way it's kind of it's it's capitalizing on that hype of
- 10:49of I want this thing because it's trendy or it's and they all you know it's it's that immediacy rather
- 10:54than and this this this this kind of trend this buy now pay later trend has been well not the buy now
- 10:59pay later itself but lay by lay by what it's been it's been around for you but I remember lay
- 11:06buying a pair of dickies dickies dickies love dickies when I was going through my I'm gonna look
- 11:12trying what color were they probably when I was wearing my gloves as well they were orange I got
- 11:17orange two were they three quarters they were pretty much because I was so short though are you
- 11:21the three-quarter oh the bright orange ones I had them to yeah and my best friend was trying to
- 11:26wear them to the disco and I was like please don't wear them because what we matching oh they're
- 11:31on a dickies a proxy or USA hoodie and gloves that was my stock standard and I remember lay by
- 11:39buying these and I I remember you'd have to go back into the store every couple of weeks and I
- 11:44put 20 dollars down and I put another 20 dollars but the shorts would stay at the retailer
- 11:48so you couldn't get them until you paid them off but yeah I think that's quite good you don't
- 11:52have it yet so you're aware that you're still paying it out you're almost saving in a in a sense
- 11:57but you're going to the store and putting it into it's putting money in the piggy bank again
- 12:01but you're you're going to the store and you're paying off this product and I think that's good
- 12:06in a sense that you are paying off installments to get something whereas this you're getting it
- 12:11up front and then you're paying for it later so it's creating the instant gratification and instant
- 12:16need that I want it now and I think that's that can be dangerous if you're very dangerous if you
- 12:23were to go to say rhythm and vines or a festival or something and you went to the festival and then
- 12:27you paid for your ticket after it yeah you're just like oh but I've already been and now I have to pay
- 12:32$400 it's sort of that same thing it's like when a friend text you on like a the following week
- 12:38after a week and then like hey can you translate oh yeah you've already had a good time that
- 12:44money's gone it's been to now I've got to fork out for it yeah yeah that's so true
- 12:48on a more positive note from an investment point of view this is such a growing trend and it's
- 12:53just gone absolutely bananas and so from an investment point of view I think it's a great trend
- 12:59to invest in yeah kind of contradicts we say don't be a consumer but invest in it it's like
- 13:03from a well it's being clever seeing a trend yeah just because other people are doing it doesn't
- 13:07mean you're saying you should go yeah it's like gambling you can invest in it but don't do it
- 13:11play maybe don't do either of those would you say with the buy now pay later that after pay
- 13:17is starting to become the netflix all the sort of the word that's been used as kind of the
- 13:22they've got the first mover advantage so therefore they are the front of mind because for me when
- 13:28you've said buy now pay later I just thought after pay that was the first thing that I thought of
- 13:32yeah and that's like we said in the previous episodes such a powerful position to be in you
- 13:37like just after pay it you're not going to be like just zip pay it just clarner at whatever they
- 13:42all the other one so many yeah there's a firm zip pay clarner labor not not labor in the older
- 13:48sense but labor the company and so but yeah you do say I'll just after pay it because they've become
- 13:54the household name I'm popping that on my list just looking to it's got bought out was that an
- 13:59Australian company yes yeah so funny story there do we know them not oh I thought you're going to
- 14:07say I dated them not I wish why is he cool young he is young and he's worth fucking billions
- 14:15out sorry excuse me not that we are gold that is that is not what we're doing here but he's
- 14:22obviously super clever oh totally and I remember this is this is this is a funny story so I
- 14:26remember I was in Sydney at the time working for a fund manager and they were IPOing which means
- 14:31they were they were coming to market they were listing their shares first the first time to the
- 14:34public and so they go around and they go to each fund manager to try and sell their story effectively
- 14:39and we had a meeting with this company you'd never heard of after pay and went along didn't
- 14:44you ever heard of it at this point no they were not a pretty much non-existent and we sat
- 14:49across table and he was so young how old was he like oh my gosh is everyone's listening but um
- 14:55he was about 25 and so I was like 27 28 and I was like wow I'm sitting across the table from a
- 15:00CEO who's like younger than me and I was just quite mind blowing anyway was he a nice guy
- 15:05yeah quite shy yeah like quite like obviously it was like he was arrogant not at all no no no but
- 15:11his only past experience that um he had set up a selling jewellery on like a on eBay which is
- 15:16yeah so I was kind of already a bit like what's your experience yeah it's already but he's
- 15:20isn't it was a new trend so like hang on how does it work so what in that phase in that stage
- 15:26you're kind of thinking this sounds a bit is it gonna take off it's pretty pretty high risk
- 15:31investment at this stage and so this was probably five years ago and maybe even longer now anyway
- 15:37and I came away from that meeting when there's a colleague of mine and we were like we were like
- 15:41that sounds like you know such a high risk kind of specky investment that's not that's not
- 15:49a best in it and you often ask me what's your biggest investing mistake and you would think it's
- 15:57investing something goes down but I think personally my biggest investing mistake is not buying
- 16:04after paying not going into the IPO because the issue price they listed at a dollar and their
- 16:10share prices is like a hundred and sixteen dollars now in short space of time so if you
- 16:17if we'd even invested just ten thousand dollars which for a fund manager's it's not a lot
- 16:21but for obviously it would be so like ourselves it's a lot but so say you had invested at IPO
- 16:26at or around a dollar and you'd invest in ten thousand dollars you would have you would be sitting
- 16:31on at one point one million dollars oh my goodness that's what we call story and that's
- 16:39twenty ten thousand dollars it's not as though it's a crazy amount I know I mean it's a lot of
- 16:43money but and I guess you know you could lose that ten thousand dollars but to think that one
- 16:48investment could have made you a million dollars could have set you up for life and this is this
- 16:52these are the investment wow that's such a cool story that people spend their lives looking for
- 16:57this is what we call a hundred bagger so it's it's gone up a hundred times hundred bagger all of
- 17:03this is such a lame it's like ten baggers or like twenty baggers or this is a hundred bagger and
- 17:08a hundred baggers are what can't say with a straight face a hundred bagger now I just imagine
- 17:13someone like gathering coins and putting them in giant plastic bags and so this is what investors
- 17:20even the most expert highly skilled investors look for because if you can get one of these and you
- 17:25just ride it and you don't sell and you make you just you let's set you up and it's either your
- 17:30your career solidifying in terms of your performance or as as an investor like us it's your savings
- 17:36it's you've you've been set up you've got a million dollars but the key thing here is we we
- 17:41hear a lot of these stories and I know people that put in ten thousand doubled their money to
- 17:46twenty thousand and took it out because you've doubled your money and you think you know it's
- 17:50very hard to hold on to the ride for that long because the more times that you start doubling
- 17:55your money the more you start thinking oh my gosh is this the peak should I be holding on for
- 17:59that last little bit you know it's it's it's it's it's not as easy as it's people who bought
- 18:02Amazon shares at the start and then sold out when they were you know two hundred and now that
- 18:07with even more totally and you always hear stories like that but yeah if you can find companies like
- 18:13this you just can't just hold on but it doesn't give me a whole lot of hope to think that you didn't
- 18:19invest how am I going to spot a trend like that and invest in it well when that's when it comes
- 18:25to investing is it's so it's a personal choice it's a personal choice and there was obviously
- 18:29people that came away from those meetings going oh my god he's a young guy he's gonna have a large
- 18:36share holding in the business he's driven he wants to build a legacy like all those things
- 18:41and unfortunately I learned a lot from that I learned a lot what would you say would be the
- 18:49takeaway from that would just be I guess not be so judgmental quick to judge yeah yeah or maybe
- 18:56maybe I should have done a bit more research around this this by now pay later or maybe just not
- 19:00of this it as much you know you don't have to beat the house you could true you could have done
- 19:03two grand yeah you could have done a little bit and then as it starts being out being a proven
- 19:08concept and you see people use it more than you can add to your investment so you know there's
- 19:13you can position your sizing appropriately for the risk that you're taking but I think yeah
- 19:17would probably be don't don't be so judgmental it's hard not to be it's hard not to be and especially
- 19:24from that sense I was investing clients money so I needed to make a decision that was
- 19:28beneficial for the client but also yeah you didn't go and I'll put my own money into it yeah so
- 19:34are you allowed to do that if you if we were we weren't at the time no but some companies you can
- 19:40this is what I refer to as it's kind of a sunrise industry so I don't know if you've
- 19:45talked about this before but a sunset industry and sunrise industry and it kind of comes
- 19:49it played it comes to play with the structural growth but it's a sunrise industry obviously the
- 19:54sun rises goes up and so by now pay later would be a sunrise industry whereas a sun set it's
- 20:00like what's the sun sitting on what's going down is more like maybe companies like
- 20:07Sky TV and Sky TV your newspaper company so it's the opposite of structural it's the opposite
- 20:11of structural growth exactly and so this is a sunrise industry this is a structural growth
- 20:15industry and yeah only 2% of globally commerce is done through by now pay later still 2%
- 20:232% so it's still such an origin this is a ripple it's not even a wave yet yeah we're at a tiny
- 20:29little ripple yeah and it's going to make its way into a giant barrel it's like a tidal wave that
- 20:33hasn't even happened the earth hasn't even moved yet that's really exciting yeah so thanks so much
- 20:39for pointing it out so if you looked at it if you could draw a graph of structural growth you know
- 20:46one that we kind of up into the right you'd probably still be at the bottom to the left at the
- 20:50just at the start of it so this would be a long-term structural growth trend and something that
- 20:55so for anyone that's listening and is thinking hmm I might go have a little look at some of these
- 21:02companies so with the best place to start being look at the different ones available on different
- 21:08companies I mean sorry in different countries so maybe like what are the ones in New Zealand
- 21:12what are the ones in Australia America yeah and then go through and have a look at the criteria
- 21:17and see which one feels the strongest yes yeah I think that's a great idea and I think the annoying
- 21:22thing is there is a lot of these companies but like we spoke about before whether with a really
- 21:29good structural growth industry there's going to be multiple players because they're all being
- 21:33in effect they want to all benefit and be a part of that growth so that also does give you
- 21:37validation that this is probably going to be around for a while because there's lots of companies
- 21:41that want to get access to that to that growth in my opinion being the first mover is always
- 21:46sometimes being the first mover is is most nine times out of ten the best with Netflix for example
- 21:52they were the first mover therefore they've got significant market shares so is Apple pay one
- 21:59or is that different because often if I've forgotten my wallet somebody like get Apple pay
- 22:03that's like pay wave that's kind of different yeah so that's I mean it's a type of technology but
- 22:07is that within the same industry not really no so by now by now pay later is just paying
- 22:12up for installments so but you've got so many companies wanting to get access to I'd be like
- 22:17I have to pay just got bought out by Square which is a large US company you've got PayPal
- 22:21trying to get into the space you've got Apple you've there's just so many companies that can obviously
- 22:28see this as a trend and they're thinking okay do we buy or do we build even banks are aligning
- 22:33with by now pay later companies because they're credit cards hardly anyone's getting credit cards
- 22:39especially younger millennials it's like hey why would I get a credit card when I can just buy
- 22:43now pay later of course like I hardly use my credit card because I don't even have one exactly
- 22:48out of them debit cards you can buy online you can and debit card works like a credit card
- 22:53so it is your own money so credit cards were only really a necessity for in my opinion because
- 22:58of online shopping and they had the digits whereas you had an ephbos card you couldn't buy online
- 23:04whereas now there's no need for credit cards and I think personally they're in the same
- 23:09campus by now pay later they did that you don't need if you can't afford to buy something you shouldn't
- 23:13be buying something so it's it's a very it's a quite archaic I think like my parents were saying
- 23:18why don't you have a credit card it's like well I don't need to buy by mom what amount I've got
- 23:24yours yeah what's your points from ruin so then if we look at the fact that after pay is just sold
- 23:32yes have they still are the you know are the founders still going to be working yeah yeah so I mean
- 23:38they've been selling down this state of a time but yeah they're still there so they're still very
- 23:45very driven and involved in a business yeah and there was another company that listed earlier in
- 23:51the year so that this is another thing with the structural growth industry is that there's a lot
- 23:55of companies that IPO will come to market because after pay has had such a dream so people think oh
- 24:01well I'll get involved in this IPO totally and and and you they can see after paying how fantastic
- 24:06its share price has has done over the last you know five years or so and there's companies going
- 24:12oh I want I want a piece of that action and there's also investors that are saying yes we see this
- 24:17as a trend we want to get access to it so there was a company called a firm which I was a
- 24:21buy now I'll pay later company that IPOed a firm a firm and it was up a hundred percent on day one
- 24:27which is nuts like wow let's say what all birds did yeah exactly so it's like that's validation as
- 24:33well there's such a big trend because all birds is obviously playing into the eco-friendly sustainable
- 24:38fashion kind of trend and then a firm and after pay zip pay they've all been affitting from
- 24:47this buy now pay later trend so if someone was looking to invest in the structural growth
- 24:52industry would diversifying be good within the industry or is this an example of something where
- 24:58maybe you would buy one company in a structure in this particular structural growth and then maybe
- 25:04in other other industries yeah I would say this industry there's still a lot of risk so because
- 25:09it is so new like it's only been around for five years or so that there's still a bit of regulation
- 25:15that kind of is going on around it so in terms of how much the after pays of the world can charge
- 25:22in terms of fees and interest fees and and there's a bit of regulation going on there so there is
- 25:28a risk associated with investing in companies that are in such early stages of structural growth
- 25:36but it's kind of like investing in Bitcoin there's still so much regulation and uncertainty
- 25:41about how that that industry or how cryptocurrencies are going to evolve that sometimes it can be
- 25:47too early to get into a structural trend but does that mean then maybe getting one
- 25:51if you were to look at one it's good because you've got your finger in it but you're not
- 25:55sorry I'm going to stop using it but you've got you know you've got one foot in this that
- 25:58structural growth industry door but you're not you know it's not your eggs aren't all in that one
- 26:03basket exactly and maybe maybe investing in in one by now pay later company and then maybe
- 26:08get another another industry or another structural growth industry but if you have enough money
- 26:15then maybe you invest in two different companies in the by now plan one that's maybe really
- 26:19well advanced one that's still growing or one that's slightly slightly different or you know a
- 26:24different different target market or something you know something that's a bit different from
- 26:28the other one that you've bought so okay awesome I really I think that was a super super
- 26:34helpful episode and it makes you want to go and buy after me I think digital payments is a really
- 26:40so this is by now pay later it's kind of like it's a trend within a trend as well so you've got
- 26:44the digital payments industry which I think is just can we just say no please okay I'm getting
- 26:52will we edit that out I'm sorry yeah I think digital payments there's just so much going on in that
- 26:58space and we've digital payments is still only 20% of global transactions so there's still a
- 27:04huge growth within that 80% of transaction done through cash so there's still so so you've got
- 27:09like a trend within a tree you know you know a little bit of a pie which is kind of a bigger
- 27:13pie which is part of a massive price don't do that for but I'm sorry I'm sorry pastries don't
- 27:18don't don't go like actually my apartment my home and so yeah I think there's just so much going
- 27:24on in the digital payments and I it's an industry that I quite like I really enjoy you know researching
- 27:30well what's going on and what's this like even that before pay company you're like wow there's
- 27:34just it's interesting because things are popping up and changing and so you you start reading about
- 27:38the industry and the change is going on and the great thing about Australian New Zealand is that
- 27:42we are one of the most advanced regions aside from China that in terms of digital payments because
- 27:48we've got small markets our banks all talk to each other and you can implement it quicker and so
- 27:54we we were one of the first countries to get pay way for example and then they roll that out
- 27:58around around the world and so whereas in the US you've got different states you've got banks
- 28:03they don't really talk to each other so there's still heaps of growth to be made because they
- 28:07haven't necessarily implemented yet and there's been so much emergence of of digital wallets and
- 28:11everything over there and and companies because their banking system is so archaic so like the
- 28:17likes of PayPal has been a fantastic investment but for us down here we kind of kind of understand
- 28:22like I don't really use PayPal and it's it's hard to fed them but you've got to think of
- 28:27you know what what are the trends in other regions and you can still get get access to some really
- 28:32good investing trends that might you might not spot in your home market yeah so it's like talking
- 28:38to friends and and that kind of thing about what what they're seeing in different market there's
- 28:42so many times they'll ring up my US friends or Aussie friends I'm like hey have you seen this going
- 28:47on they're like oh yeah yeah you know and it's just kind of validation you've got American friends
- 28:51yeah you talk to people on the ground and that was a great thing about working in Sydney is that
- 28:55you're like a financial correspondent hi I'm just calling in from New Zealand or in like London or
- 29:01you know when I was when your brain used to travel for work I remember there was one company
- 29:05invested in the payments company and I saw it in a taxi and I was like the taxi driver said oh
- 29:08do you like do you enjoy using that product and he just read or he's like no they charge so many
- 29:12fees like all this it was quite interesting because you don't hear and from an investment point of
- 29:17you I was like well they charge high fees you're still using it so that means lots of revenue for them
- 29:21so it's actually probably good investment you know it's kind of you this is that yeah and I think
- 29:25talking to well he's still got a lot of information from taxi drivers which we do say don't
- 29:29do it but it was more about trains going on and and what they're seeing and in terms of like
- 29:34consumer confidence and what people are talking about and so to summarize by now pay later
- 29:40great from a recent point of view not from a user yeah maybe don't start using by now pay later as
- 29:48yes you're shopping addiction if you're because your end up kind of being in more and more
- 29:55you'll have no money to invest in the industry because you've spent it all on sunglasses yes
- 29:59and instead how about you invest be great if after paid it at hey buy our shares and pay them off
- 30:05and that's your store installments why don't you send a pitch job and a big high
- 30:10Victoria from the Curve in New Zealand a great idea for your company but that's a great idea
- 30:14yeah it'd be a good PR stunt it would be and good learning curve for everyone yes
- 30:18oh what are we talking about in our next episode we are talking about crypto currencies oh goodness
- 30:28this has been something that would make something kind of peer pressure into talking about she
- 30:32doesn't love talking about it's become yeah it's something that we need to talk about though
- 30:37because I've had friends come up to me that have very little knowledge with investing and they've
- 30:43got a bit of money and they're like hey show me some bitcoin and they don't know anything about it
- 30:46and that to me is just really really red flaggy red flaggy scary I'm like no no no no no no no
- 30:51make sure you understand what you're missing in so we're gonna really unpack it and we're gonna
- 30:56do it over I think two or three episodes yeah I think it deserves a bit of airtime so I've seen
- 31:00then any questions that you have or anything about crypto and we'll we'll try and get them answers
- 31:05yeah and I think I'm gonna try and give a bias view because there is it's such unbiased or bias
- 31:11sorry unbiased I don't know for bias views really what we should be doing here I'm gonna give an
- 31:17unbiased view thanks for listening so picking up on that I'm hungry but I'm still paying attention
- 31:24and yeah we're gonna really fish it out and hopefully you come away more knowledgeable and be
- 31:31able to figure out if it's actually appropriate for you to invest in okay that sounds awesome
- 31:36and did we have any questions from our Q&A to answer this week they were about crypto so we'll leave
- 31:41them till thanks week and add them all in yeah the more questions that we get the more useful it'll
