Transcript
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, and there's the opening crack.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: It's time for the opening crack.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: The sideshow to the DD show we normally do where we taste and rank some beer.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Fellas, how are we doing tonight?
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Don't give me a thumbs down.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: That was a good intro.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: It was kind of a weak crack though, so.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: But we're doing good.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's good.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Uh we're just uh we're busting out the uh the bar nuts tonight.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Put the nuts away, Ross.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: No, we're we're enjoying.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, that should give you a clue right there.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Brett.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Brett, what do we got going on tonight?
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: We are drinking the spicy pickle fight.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: It's a pickle beer from Nebraska Brewing Company out of La Vista, Nebraska.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Do you like have an affinity for pickle beers at this point?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Well yes, it's okay.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: This is in a different world than the last pickle beer we had.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: We're a glutton for punishment, so we just come back to it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: This we like them both.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: You're gonna feel tomorrow.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: So this is spicy pickle fight.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Um, this is an American light lager.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: As Brett said, it's from Nebraska Breen Company.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Um guys, let's let's dive right in on the taste on this one.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: So take a swig.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Let me know what you're tasting here.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: Just initial thoughts.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Very helpful.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Peppers.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: They're spicy.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: It's a good spice, but it like it gets you on the top of the mouth.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Like whoo!
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: It sticks there too.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it lingers a lot.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: I do like it.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: I like it a lot.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: I do wish the spice maybe didn't quite linger as long as it did.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: That's my only complaint.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: It's like that good building spice though, right?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: It's like you're like, mmm, this is delicious.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: It's kind of spicy.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And you're like, yeah, this is it's pretty spicy.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: And then you like you just keep building.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: It's like if I'm having some chicken strips and ranch though, like I don't feel like I can drink like a take a big gulp of this beer.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Like, this feels like a sipper.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: This is a sipping.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's true.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: It's like you'd have to have one of these and uh Coors Light with you just to you know to wash things down versus just the flavor.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Like, I think the flavor is.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I may be double fisting right now.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: That is true.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: That's okay.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: We don't judge you.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Fair.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: What's this can look like, Brett?
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Uh this has oh, it's a good one.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: It's got a a boxing pickle on it.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: Like fists, fisted cups up, ready to box.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: With a fantastic mustache.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Call out to the pickle's mustache.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: So because it's gonna be your pickle.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: It's a very bright red, bright red mustache.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: This one, definitely a monk.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: Uh, if you have not seen this beer, look it up, look up the can online.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: This this pickle is definitely a monk.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: It's ready to do some boxing.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: This beer has been a key point to flurry blows my throat via mustache.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, I love it.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Um, so ABV on this one comes in at a 4.6% with nine on the IBU scale.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I will say, guys, this is probably the lowest uh in terms of IBUs that we've had, but even with that said, I get not a lot of beer flavor in this.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: So, like the bitterness and the alcohol not pulling through much.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it doesn't really taste like a beer.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Tastes kind of like spicy pickle juice, and I'm okay with that.
- 3:52unknown: Yeah.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, if you're ordering this, it's because you want spicy pickle juice, right?
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Here's why I bought it.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Well, I didn't buy it.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Matt bought it, but yeah.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: Thanks, Matt.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: If you don't like pickles, you're not buying this beer.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, true.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Oh, god, no.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: No.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Um, I think we said that it's a light lager beer taste profile.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: Well, this is obviously spicy, dill, peppery.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Whoever wrote the notes for this wrote spicy.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: I was just gonna say I wrote spicy.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: What does spicy be, Phil?
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: You want to elaborate on that?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I thought I fixed it, but clearly I didn't.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Um, malt.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Is anybody tasting any malt in this one?
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Uh no.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: No.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: I would agree with that.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Um, best guess I would have is it's probably some sort of maize or corn malt to it, just keeps it very neutral, allows the other flavors to shine through.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: And a lot of dill.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: A lot of dill.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: There's you throwing a handful of that in there, or probably more than that.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Uh hot flavor or yeast in this one.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Uh I mean I taste bagels.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that's accurate.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Uh body and mouth feel.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: I think that one.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: It's I mean it's light.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: It's a lager, right?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: So it's a light beer, but I feel like the spice is hard, not light.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Yes, I think that has made it a very lingering beer.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, compared to other peppery beers, this one it doesn't hit you in the throat like some of those do.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: This is just like the top of the mouth.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: I'm kind of sure, like on the back of my tongue, too, right?
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Like it's good though.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, it's really good.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Uh so we were talking about like what we would eat this with earlier.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, Brett brought up like the the chicken strips and ranch.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, pizza would be good with this too.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: I could see that as well.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: So I I don't know that I would take this over some of the other types of pepper beers that I've had for pairing it with pizza, but it could work.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: The the description we found doesn't say that they add brine to their beer after the brewing process, but it's certainly when you when you think back to the first pickle beer we did where they say they add brine to it, and you can very clearly taste the salt.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: I also taste salt in this, which makes me think they add brine or they're adding salt to just accentuate the flavor.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: One of the two is happening here, I feel like.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, and one thing we should know this one is a newer offshoot of their original pickle beer.
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: This is the spicy version, obviously, if you haven't been paying attention.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Not that we've made that apparently.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: As our sinuses are clearing out, you know, it's fine.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: So, with all that said, it's time to talk a little bit about where we would find this in Fey Rune.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Bring the DD back into our beer review.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Phil, you're up first tonight.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Uh, we would find this beer at the Belching Beholder.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Uh truly adventurous setting nestled within the Underdark.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: The Belching Beholder is a welcome oasis for weary adventures seeking a spicy kick.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: To order this beer, you'll be ordering the disintegration drought.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Drought?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Drought?
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: How do you pronounce that word?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Draft, draft?
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: D-R-A-U-G-H-T.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Draft.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: What?
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Bullshit.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: No bullshit.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Let us know.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Let us know in the comments.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Draft.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Apparently, there are a lot of missing letters out of that word.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: But okay.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Uh this Ramshackle establishment boasts a reputation for fiery ails and Dubois clientele.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: It's we I don't know how to pronounce that word.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: It's weathered's wooden sign depicts a severed beholder eye emitting a deadly ray like the tavern signature brew, the disintegration draft.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: There's a bunch more, but I'm not gonna hear it.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: You definitely wrote it yourself.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: There are four more paragraphs I'll have you know.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: That he all wrote himself.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I edited.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: Alright, Brad, what do you got?
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: Alright, I'm coming to you from the Rush the Rush Rusty Shiv.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: The Rusty Shiv.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Wait, what?
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: The Rush's Shiv.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: No.
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: The Rusty's Shiv.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: This is a bar in Avernus.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: So it is popular with the fiends and infernal warlord warlords in Avernus.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Uh and this signature drink is the shiving scorpion.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: Ooh, I like it.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: It has fermented demon spit, bone marrow, and chilies grown in the fires of Avernus.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: That's impressive.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: I like that a lot.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: It's good.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: Especially if you like that demon spit.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: It's good.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Adds a little viscosity to it.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: That's why it lingers.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Oh boy.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: You've entered into a contract.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: You just don't know it yet.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: For me, we're going to the uh the southeast of Fey Rune to Easting, just on the edge of the pepper fields, of the green fields down there.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: Uh you can find this beer at the spicy gnome.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: This hashtag not a strip club.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Just want to point that out.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Juice Bar.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Juice Bar after nine o'clock.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: And this is called the Flame Brew Ale, a rare and exotic beverage crafted by brewmasters in the volcanic regions of the Forgotten Realms.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: So down there there's some volcanoes in the mountains to the east.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: So this would be east of Baldur's Gate El Terrell.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: You follow the Cinnathar River down that way.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Are the mountains or the volcanoes between the peppery fields and the green fields, or are they next to the blue fields and the orange fields?
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: So Easting sits on the river fields.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: Why do I bother answering this?
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Why do I bother to geography lesson?
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: With that said the one the one bonus you do get from this beer is that uh you do get uh advantage and resistance against uh cold-based attacks, which is a nice little problem is you're in the south, so there's not like there's much down there that's gonna attack you with cold things.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: So take some with you, take it north.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: When you get up to Icewindale, you'll have some resistance against stuff.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: This this stuff would keep you warm, though.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: That's that is true.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: No lie.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Maybe breath weapon?
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Everyone's oh that would be that would be a cool thing.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Once per long rest.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: If you drink a six-pack within an hour, you get a breath weapon.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: I've done that before, but not with this.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: You you got a breath weapon.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: No, no, I drank a six-pack within an hour.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, we've all done that, but weapon, but you see, technically still a breath weapon.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Thank you very much.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's uh talk a little bit.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Let's well, let's move on to our challenge rating.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Um, for those of you haven't listened in before, so a challenge rating one on our scale would be like uh cream ales.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: This would be where a lot of your domestics for, this is your entry-style beers, and then at the other end, for a challenge rating of 20, you would find your double IPAs, your imperial styles, your very heavy beers.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: So, fellas, the last time we did this, we probably had our highest rating on a beer.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Brett, where is this bad boy falling?
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm gonna go challenge rating one.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: Like, this is the goblin of beers.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Like interesting.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: It's one goblin coming at you.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: Like, it's not that big of big a punch.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: It talks a big game, but as long as you like pickles, try it.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: I so I was initially thinking higher, but thinking about what Brett said, it it doesn't taste overly beery.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: So if you dislike pickles, you will not like this beer.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: If you were on a pickle scale, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: It's like an 18 on the pickle scale, maybe, but as far as a beer goes, yeah, I mean it's gotta be down there towards the bottom.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Maybe a three just because it's a little different flavor than people are expecting.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: You know, if you even if you're a domestic beer drinker, if you pick that baby up and drink it, like it might knock your socks off.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: So a little bit like a three.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: I was thinking of four, and I think the only reason I was thinking of four was it it, I mean, going into this, you're not gonna know how spicy it is.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: It's not like the can gives you an indication that this is gonna clear your sinuses out.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, look at his musket.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: It is not an advertisement.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: No, no, not at all.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: I'm not I'm not saying that.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm just saying that the the pickle's gonna turn you off before any spice would on this one.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: So I think a four only because it's gonna turn anybody that doesn't like pickles off beer-wise, is easily a one.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: Like there's no beer flavor in this at all.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Uh so if you're looking for something unique to try with your dinner and this is available to you, I would recommend it.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Why not?
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: So every time I take a sip, it's like, whoo, here we go again.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: So with that said, yeah, your nay boys.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Let's start with you, Brad.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, double thumbs up.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Yes, I love it.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: I I'm a glutton for punishment when it comes to like spicy, tangy.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: Yes, I would say yes as well.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: I I do like this.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: I still like that these pickle beers, at least the two that we've had so far, have that like slight brininess to it.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: I think that adds a little brightness on the back end and enhances the flavor.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, so that's gonna do it for this bonus episode.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Um, I do wanted to give a shout out.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: The last time we did a beer episode, we were this was supposed to be a tour through the 80s tonight, if you remember the dirty dancing stinking from the last episode.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: Sorry if you were expecting a tour from the 80s, but you know, whatever.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Anyway, stay tuned for more beer reviews in the future.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: You can check out our regular show, Bards and Barrels, anywhere podcasts can be found.
