- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. OK, so let's talk about the
- 0:31farm. So many times I get questions
- 0:34about how cool it is to farm and how everybody talks about how
- 0:38they would love to farm. And only every so often does
- 0:41someone say, you know, I I'm not sure if I'm cut out for it.
- 0:45It seems like it's a little hard, but I appreciate watching
- 0:48you do it and all, and all the lessons that I blend into it.
- 0:52And most of the time I hear people say how much they would
- 0:55love to be able to do it and how they think it's so cool.
- 0:58And I'm just going to be really honest with everybody.
- 1:02This is not for everybody. It seems very glamorous and very
- 1:06cool, but it is not for everybody.
- 1:08There are hard decisions that have to be made all the time.
- 1:11There's just moments of sheer terror.
- 1:14Just before I started to shoot this, there was a massive eagle
- 1:17flying over and I saw it come over the tree line.
- 1:21At the same time the Roosters saw it come over the tree line
- 1:24and everybody started to run all at once because this thing was
- 1:28massive bald eagle. And these, the girls know if he
- 1:31comes down, they're toast. They're dinner, breakfast,
- 1:36lunch, whatever you whatever meal he's consuming, it's about
- 1:40to be that. And the harsh reality is every
- 1:44spring when we're getting ready to go into spring, I have to
- 1:47have these, you know, conversations in my head about
- 1:50how I know who I start the season with on this farm is not
- 1:54who I will end the season with because things happen.
- 1:57I have to know that of all the plants, of the hundreds of
- 2:00plants that I start, all of them will not come to fruition.
- 2:04I have to know that things will not be perfect.
- 2:07No matter how I design it, no matter what I think about, it
- 2:10will not be perfect. There will always be something
- 2:14that goes wonky, something that goes crazy, something that's
- 2:18incredibly sad. Someone will not make it.
- 2:20And I have to live with those things.
- 2:23And I think it's a reality check to talk about it because so many
- 2:28people do think it's just, you know, it's glamorous.
- 2:31Let me tell you, there's no glamour in chicken poop
- 2:34everywhere. There's no glamour in having to
- 2:37make sure that you're constantly wearing shoes that go out just
- 2:41to the chicken coop and then no shoes in the house, wiping the
- 2:44dog's feet, checking to see if Beaufort rolled in chicken poop,
- 2:49just all these little things that happened.
- 2:52No, there's no And getting up early in the morning and having
- 2:55to be out here taking care of all of the stuff that has to be
- 3:00taken care of right away, food, water, making sure they're let
- 3:04out, making sure everybody's accounted for, you know, opening
- 3:07gates, letting everybody out. You know, it is 100% the
- 3:12wedding, the the growing, the plants, all of it.
- 3:16It is a labor of love for me. It is not something that is for
- 3:21everybody. And if it's not in your guts and
- 3:23it's not in your soul, you won't enjoy it.
- 3:25Now I enjoy it because it's it's part of my hardwiring.
- 3:29I can't explain why it is that I love it so much, but I can tell
- 3:32you just setting up seeds in trays, you know the, we spent
- 3:36the whole morning getting all of these starters set up in the
- 3:41garage where we've got you know, grow lights set up and we're
- 3:45getting ready. I, we had some lights burn out
- 3:47right So now, OK, we were all set to plug everything in and
- 3:50get it all running but guess what magically 2 sets of lights
- 3:54are not working and we've done everything we can and Mark just
- 3:58thinks that they're done they're just toast.
- 3:59So order new ones on Amazon have them here tomorrow.
- 4:03Now it's sitting there and going through and putting in all of
- 4:06it. It'll take hours to just get all
- 4:08the seeds planted and then making sure that they're taking
- 4:12care of right temperature, right light, right water, heat mats,
- 4:15all of the things that have them grow.
- 4:17And everything takes time. Everything takes time.
- 4:20So when people say, well, you know, do you, what do you do in
- 4:24your spare time? This is what I do in my spare
- 4:26time and it's because I love it. It's not because I feel like I
- 4:29have to do it. I don't need to grow vegetables.
- 4:32I can go right to the store and buy them.
- 4:33But there's something about doing it yourself that makes
- 4:36your soul happy. And there's something about
- 4:39growing your own flowers or is it just make sure you're you
- 4:42just feel like you want to burst with joy when you're watching
- 4:44them grow? And I can't explain it, but what
- 4:48I can tell you, it's not for everybody.
- 4:50So some people become enamored with it.
- 4:53Some people want to do it. Some people will try it and
- 4:56fail. I hear that a lot of how people
- 4:58say, oh, I did this and it was so hard and the bugs ate it and
- 5:00I gave up. OK, I get it.
- 5:03I completely get it. Not for everyone.
- 5:06And I think that's a great lesson in life.
- 5:08While some things may seem like they are incredibly like perfect
- 5:13for you, all of a sudden you'll try out something else and it's
- 5:16not perfect for you and you have to just say, hey, you know what,
- 5:19like me shopping, shopping is not for me.
- 5:22Shopping is definitely not for me.
- 5:24I don't like it unless I'm going shopping for plans.
- 5:27But take me clothes shopping and I just want to cry.
- 5:29It's not for me going and getting my nails done, not for
- 5:32me, just I, I not my thing. Now, lots of people enjoy that,
- 5:38just not mine. And I've tried those things, but
- 5:42they just don't feel right. It's like having a rock in your
- 5:44shoe. So remember when you're trying
- 5:47something out, it's OK to try everything and you should try it
- 5:50and see if you like it. But be patient with yourself if
- 5:52it's not for you and recognize that you know it is if you have
- 5:56the glamour of wanting to do a farm.
- 5:59It's real work my friends, and it's hard work, but it does keep
- 6:02you in really great shape. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:05you have a blessed day and I will see.
- 6:06See you tomorrow. Bye.
