- 0:00Hello everyone, and welcome back to Kenny.
- 0:03Conversation brought to you by Jags, the leader in high
- 0:07performance aftermarket car parts.
- 0:09Remember to go to jags.com for everything you need to fix your
- 0:14vehicles up. And they tell me right now
- 0:16they're all about Jeep parts and truck parts.
- 0:20And boy, oh boy, does this next lady understand sponsorship, my
- 0:25dear friend, and she truly is. I've known her for years.
- 0:29The great Kelly Earnhardt Miller.
- 0:32How you doing, Kelly? Hey, I'm doing great.
- 0:35I'm so glad that you asked me this.
- 0:38And yeah, we go back a long ways, right?
- 0:42I think so. I, I don't, I, yeah, I, I think
- 0:46that's something we can talk about too.
- 0:48But let's let's introduce you properly.
- 0:51Kelly is the business leader and CEO and co-owner of Junior
- 0:57Motorsports and the daughter of the great Dale Earnhardt Senior.
- 1:03So, you know, there's a lot of people, Kelly, that don't know
- 1:08our past because like brother Rusty says, there's a there's a
- 1:11generation gap now. I noticed there's been a theme
- 1:16with you lately, this generation gap.
- 1:18Yeah, well, I'm glad you hear that.
- 1:20I, I get on tangents and I, and I tend to use them because it
- 1:25pisses me off a little bit when people don't know, you know, say
- 1:30Bill Elliott or or Dale Senior or Kale Yarborough, you know,
- 1:37like those pictures in the background there.
- 1:38What is that Buddy Baker up there?
- 1:40Yep, Buddy Baker, the ghost car. Yep.
- 1:43I've got a little good wrench. One of Dad's helmets here.
- 1:47So my Popeye's trophy's over here.
- 1:49Yeah. I love that.
- 1:52I want to start out fun. I want, I want to brag on you.
- 1:57You're very mature, you're very influential.
- 2:00And you said something to me that I, I teach my best friends
- 2:07and I probably told 10 people, the, the people that I'm closest
- 2:10to could be Doug Schoenfeld from Schoenfeld Headers.
- 2:14I said, let me tell you what Kelly Earnhardt told me one day.
- 2:18Oh gosh, she. She said.
- 2:20Kenny Wallace, I love you because you're a no maintenance
- 2:23friend. So yeah, it it, and you might
- 2:29not. Like no maintenance people.
- 2:31Well, when when you're famous like you are and people want to
- 2:35claw to you, they want to cling to you, you know, you might have
- 2:40forgot about that. Do you remember that and and
- 2:42talk about? No, you know, I, I do think I
- 2:45remember that. And I mean, I'm, I mean that in
- 2:49like the kindest way for people, you know, because I, you, you
- 2:55know, it's not just me. Everybody's busy, busy in this
- 2:59world. It's not just me.
- 3:01Mamas are busy, business owners are busy, students are busy,
- 3:05racers are busy. Like we're all life is busy.
- 3:08This little device right here, the fact that we're doing what
- 3:11we're doing has just made everything so accessible, right?
- 3:15And you know, it's, it's disheartening that you can't
- 3:19keep up with everybody that you want to keep up with.
- 3:21And I think, gosh, for Facebook and social media and people that
- 3:26are real like you on there that you know, you can, you can keep
- 3:30up with life. And so then when you do get that
- 3:33opportunity to see you in person or text with you about
- 3:38something, you know, I'm kind of caught up from Facebook.
- 3:41So I'm like, can I ask you about something or say you, you just
- 3:43got back from vacation, you know?
- 3:46And I did. Right.
- 3:48And I love that instead of well, guys, it's been forever since
- 3:52you talked to me. It's been forever since you
- 3:54called me. You don't ever call me anymore.
- 3:58You know, that's high maintenance to me because in
- 4:01this life we are spread thin. And you know, I, I'm a people
- 4:06lover. I don't know if I'm, I'm not say
- 4:08I'm a people pleaser. I like to make people happy.
- 4:12So I like to connect with people.
- 4:13I like relationships with people.
- 4:16And so, yeah, I mean, that's why I said that Like I I love it
- 4:19when you can just pick right up. You know, you and I do go way
- 4:24back. I mean, you were on Jimmy
- 4:27Elijah's team, my ex-husband, you know, just obviously growing
- 4:31up in the sport, I looked up to your family because you were a
- 4:36family, a racing family, a family of brothers, my dad and
- 4:40Rusty's connection, You know, there's just so many touch
- 4:43points. And the greatest thing about
- 4:47your family is your Mama, Judy. She, she's next on my list.
- 4:51Why? And, and I, and there's a lot
- 4:54lot to be said about this. Number one, why do you like my
- 4:58mom so much? And I wanna let you know my mom
- 5:01would say to me, you don't ever call me.
- 5:02And I'm like, Mama, it goes both, it goes both ways.
- 5:06You, you call me and I'm gonna answer, 'cause you're #1 if I'm
- 5:10on the phone, I'm gonna go, hey, hold on.
- 5:12My mom's on the other line. Well, I got to, I got to be, I
- 5:16was the account manager for Rusty at Action Performance.
- 5:22So he was one of Miller Lite and, and he were one of my
- 5:25clients, you know, so to speak. And I got the opportunity to go
- 5:28to Graceland with them and when, when they had the Graceland
- 5:33Elvis car. And I'm, I'm pretty certain
- 5:36that's when I was introduced to your mom.
- 5:38And I don't know, I mean, she just like once I met your mom,
- 5:42she made the connection to me for all for the three of you.
- 5:47And I mean, she just is just a genuine fun.
- 5:53Again, like I said, you you run into her.
- 5:54I just saw her somewhere and I'm trying to remember where and I
- 5:57ran. A grocery store.
- 5:59Probably the grocery store. No, her and one of your
- 6:03daughters were somewhere with me and one of the grandkids we were
- 6:07in. Brittany, Brittany and Lila.
- 6:09We were in the same space for some reason, and I ran over to
- 6:12her and I was like, Oh my God, it's so good to see you.
- 6:15She's just always one of my favorite people.
- 6:17She doesn't, you know, she doesn't take any stuff.
- 6:19I watch her on Facebook and the things she posted, I just, I
- 6:22just love her. Just love her.
- 6:24So anyway, yeah. You know, and we got a lot to
- 6:27talk about everybody we're going to get to the charters.
- 6:29We're going to rough her up about that, but calm down about
- 6:32the charters, everyone. Let's let's lower that a little
- 6:35bit right now. Let me let me talk to Kelly.
- 6:37Let me talk about Kelly for a little bit in that same space.
- 6:41Kelly, you know, I don't always want to go back to your father.
- 6:46I mean, my, my, my, my brother's Rusty, so I understand.
- 6:53Do do you strong arm so you can keep your life organized?
- 6:59I mean, you know, in other words, sometimes do you catch
- 7:02yourself being too famous? What is an Earnhardt like?
- 7:07I always told people your, your father would hurt my feelings at
- 7:11time because, you know, he was so good to me.
- 7:14And then he would walk by me like he didn't know me.
- 7:18Is that an? Is that an Earnhardt?
- 7:20Tree. Yeah, that's not me.
- 7:22Tell me. About being Earnhardt and being
- 7:25famous. Yeah, I mean, it's just not me.
- 7:28And you know, Kenny, I think it's not me because I lived in
- 7:31that shadow too. You know, I I lived in the
- 7:35shadow of my dad being famous and and the same thing, you
- 7:41know, talk about in my book that I wrote drive my dad and I had
- 7:45my dad is by far the most awesome person in the universe
- 7:49as far as I'm concerned, the most awesome race car driver,
- 7:52just all of these great things. But we, our daughter, our dad
- 7:56daughter relationship was tough and it was the same thing.
- 8:00Where, where was the time for Kelly?
- 8:03Where was Kelly valued by her dad?
- 8:07Where was Kelly's worth in, in her dad's life?
- 8:11And, and I struggled with all of that.
- 8:13And so I believe that that childhood piece of me, I, I've
- 8:17taken to the future for better or worse, and just the way I
- 8:21treat people and, and, and, and I want people to know that
- 8:25they're appreciated and that they're valued and that they're
- 8:28important, good people, not bad people.
- 8:31I want the good people to know they're all those things.
- 8:35And, and so I, I try real hard at work.
- 8:38I know all of my employees names.
- 8:40I know, I know their kids, I know what they're doing.
- 8:42Just like I've mentioned you on vacation, I, that connection is
- 8:48important to me that I follow up with people if they've told me
- 8:51that they had somebody sick, you know, I follow up with an
- 8:53employee here. Hey, how's such and such doing?
- 8:54What's going on to me? Those, those you just, you can't
- 9:00do that enough for people, especially in this day and age
- 9:02when, when life is tough and mental illness is there and, and
- 9:05all of these things that are there, you just, you just can't
- 9:08be a kind enough person, which to me just means being just
- 9:12appreciating people. So a couple of things.
- 9:15Matthew Dilner, he, he, I said something to him direct
- 9:19messaging on X that I was going to talk to you and he said,
- 9:23she's the best boss I ever worked for.
- 9:27So now, now I'm here, I'm going to connect the dots.
- 9:29So like you, I love my brother Rusty dearly, but he's mean and,
- 9:37and, and because I watch him be mean to people because like your
- 9:41father, they were so focused. And, and there was this story I
- 9:45heard that most successful people are mean.
- 9:49Got an edge to him. And and because I watched Rusty
- 9:52be like that, I'm like, Oh my God, I can't be like that.
- 9:55So. So you and I, I just want to
- 9:58comment on that. Matthew says you're the best
- 10:01boss he's ever worked for, and I want you to know that I tried to
- 10:06be orally nice because Rusty was so harsh making it to the big
- 10:13time. So OK, yeah, I love you for
- 10:16that. And you're and I know that your
- 10:18employees do too 'cause they they say nice things behind your
- 10:22back. Well, that's wonderful.
- 10:24That's awesome here. OK, let's move here.
- 10:27So many years ago I saw something that made me smile
- 10:31like I'm smiling right now, said Kelly Earnhardt Miller, voted
- 10:35one of the influential and business people in NASCAR.
- 10:40That was a big deal. It was a big deal.
- 10:42Tell me about that time. You know, it was that that was
- 10:46during the time of us deciding to to move away from Delanohunt
- 10:50Incorporated. And you know, I think a lot of
- 10:53of that most fluential was obviously around my brother
- 10:58because I was his manager and still am today.
- 11:02And the decisions that we had to make both professionally and
- 11:06personally to make the decision to leave Dell and Harn
- 11:10Incorporated and everything that we knew had been built for the
- 11:14benefit of Dell and I. And, and knowing that that
- 11:18that's what our dad wanted for us and that we were letting a
- 11:21piece of that down, even though he wasn't here to like talk with
- 11:24us about it. But we knew in our hearts that
- 11:26that was like a let down because we knew.
- 11:28But then we knew that, you know, Teresa here, you know, didn't
- 11:32want that for us. And so that I think that whole
- 11:35time and then going out and, and talking and negotiating with
- 11:38Gibbs and Richard and and Mr. Hendrick and netting out where
- 11:43we netted and, you know, all the hoopla on the sponsorship that
- 11:47we were able to achieve with Mountain Dew and National Guard
- 11:49at the time in 2008. And, and, and just really set
- 11:52the path. You know, I took my brother's
- 11:54career at that time and charged forward with it like I like only
- 11:59I knew how to do. I had learned from the best in
- 12:03terms of my dad and business working at Action Performance
- 12:06licensing was so huge. Then I got the right people in
- 12:09place. I hired Joe Mattis.
- 12:12You know, I I just got the right people in place attorney wise
- 12:15and things like that and just said this is the business we're
- 12:18going to build and this is what we're going to do.
- 12:20So, you know, I give a lot of credit to that scenario of us
- 12:24making that decision to that award right there.
- 12:27That's bad ass. So I want I want to compact this
- 12:31question. I I know you this how far back
- 12:35we go. Am I bragging on that everybody
- 12:38don't don't don't comment. Oh you all about Kelly R&R
- 12:41Miller. I we got, as they say an AM
- 12:44debate radio. I got to paint the picture.
- 12:46Yeah. And, and the picture that I
- 12:48remember is that you were a really good race car driver and.
- 12:55They said it was the best. Well.
- 12:58No, you were, you really were. So here's my question.
- 13:03At what point did you go from race car driver to business
- 13:07business person? When when it's like, hey, I'm a
- 13:10race car driver. Oh yeah, I'm going to become,
- 13:13you know, I'm, I'm me and my brother are so tight.
- 13:15We're going to go business. When was that?
- 13:18Yeah, so great question, you know, I guess, you know, I'll
- 13:24just tell you how it happened. I mean, I was a good student.
- 13:27My dad had high expectations of Dale and I to make straight A's.
- 13:30If you didn't make straight A's, you're on the shit list.
- 13:34Listen, kids, listen to that. Listen, kids, I made straight
- 13:39A's, you know, I didn't cause any problems for my dad and from
- 13:42that perspective, and my dad wanted me to go to college.
- 13:46So you got to paint the picture. It's just me and Dale in our
- 13:49home. My brother Carrie lived outside
- 13:51of our home. So I'm the first kid that's
- 13:54going to go to college. And my dad really wanted me to
- 13:56go to college, so I did. I went to UNC Wilmington and I
- 14:02always, I was a tomboy growing up.
- 14:04I wanted to race cars, I wanted to deer hunt, I wanted to ride
- 14:08motorcycles. I want to do all these things.
- 14:10And my dad was always like, that's not for girls.
- 14:14You're going to, you're going to skin up your legs.
- 14:17I'll never forget when he told me that about motorcycle riding.
- 14:19You're going to skin up your legs and you don't want your
- 14:21legs all skin up and scarred and da, da, da, da, da, you know,
- 14:23you're a girl. And, and it was the time then,
- 14:27you know, don't get me wrong. So so I go to college and I'm at
- 14:32I'm in Wilmington for three years and I get a set of flowers
- 14:36for my dad and it and it said, Nah, I will cry.
- 14:42It's sad. It's been so long since I've
- 14:46seen you. I love you, I.
- 14:49Forgot what you look like. I love you.
- 14:51Never came home. I got to college and I was like,
- 14:54woo, I'm out of here. You know, I'm in Wilmington, I'm
- 14:56at the beach. I got a full time job at the
- 14:58mall and you know, you worked 365 days at the mall.
- 15:02And so I got that, I got that, that, that flowers and I was
- 15:08like, oh God, it's just been forever since I've been home.
- 15:10So I, I, I guess that made me decide to move home and I moved
- 15:17home and I finished my college career at UNCC.
- 15:21And so I moved home in my, my junior year and it took me 4 1/2
- 15:25years to finish up because I did that.
- 15:27And I said to my dad, when I moved home, I said I will only
- 15:31move home if I can do two things race cars and have my own
- 15:39apartment. I did not want to go back and
- 15:41live with them. So Yep.
- 15:44So I when I came home in that was the let's see 93 the the
- 15:51summer of 93. Guess which race car I got.
- 15:54I got my dad my brother's orange Chevy St. stock.
- 16:03It was scratched everywhere but the roof.
- 16:06You needed, you need multiple tetanus shots to drive this race
- 16:09car. I, I, I took this car out to
- 16:12Concord, loaded it on the open trailer, drove to Concord every
- 16:16weekend, ran this street stock. My cousin Tony Junior was
- 16:18running Kevin Pannell, 2 beer who works at SHR and I was
- 16:22running. Hank Parker Junior was running
- 16:24and we had a ball. And I mean this, this street
- 16:29stop car was nasty to drive. And funny story, I got knocked
- 16:33out in the payout line at Concord because I beat this
- 16:38girl's boyfriend. Oh, that's.
- 16:41Real. She was standing behind me in
- 16:43the payout line and you know, to get our $30.00 right for street
- 16:48sock race. And I turned around and when I
- 16:50turned around, she was swinging and she said that I passed her
- 16:55boyfriend and she didn't like the way I passed her boyfriend
- 16:57and I beat her boyfriend. And there's that.
- 17:00God, this is so good. I know, right?
- 17:03So, so one time too, a funny story with Dale, my mom was in
- 17:11town from Virginia. And so one of my dad's employees
- 17:15had a street stock car also that he ran, so he wasn't going to
- 17:18run that weekend. So Dale and I loaded up both
- 17:20cars. He loaded up Todd's car and I
- 17:23got my car and we drove to Concord and took our mom because
- 17:26we wanted to see a race, you know, So I mean, I got pictures
- 17:29of me out there putting air in my tires.
- 17:31I did it. I did it all by myself and and
- 17:35Dale, we're starting the race and I'm starting in front of
- 17:38Dale and Dale barrels into me and crushes his radiator.
- 17:41See ya Dale. You knocked him out and didn't
- 17:44even try from behind. You wrecked him from behind.
- 17:47That's great. So from there my dad put the
- 17:50late model stock car together. OK so so I'm in school.
- 17:54I'm working full time for a hospitality company that did the
- 17:57GM Goodrich and AC Delco stuff. I'm working part time for them
- 18:00and I'm racing the street Stocks on the side.
- 18:02Well, my dad put the Lake Model program together for Dale Carey
- 18:06and myself. That's when I ran the 38 Lake
- 18:09Model car I was seeing if Dale doesn't have my was.
- 18:12It Sizzler's Steakhouse. Or sizzling.
- 18:15Yeah. So it was Mom and Pop's Ham,
- 18:16Western Sizzlin, Western Steer, Western Steer and Bennett's
- 18:21Steakhouse, which was a BBQ place.
- 18:23And so that was a three-year deal.
- 18:26I raced late models all around, you know, tri-county.
- 18:29We went to Nashville, North Wilkesboro, Hickory, Myrtle
- 18:33Beach, you know, and, and raced and had a lot of fun and say
- 18:39this. Yep.
- 18:41Just listening to you. I don't like to interrupt, but I
- 18:44just want to say this. You have already everything you
- 18:48just said. You've gone to college.
- 18:50You've raced. Yeah.
- 18:52You're you're already ready. I'm getting row rounded right?
- 18:55Yeah. OK.
- 18:56So go ahead. Yeah.
- 18:57So, so then I, my dad bought Sports Image who did all the
- 19:02licensing, Hank Jones company that did all my dad's product
- 19:06and I went to work there and I got in there working full time.
- 19:11I would leave on Fridays at 2:00 to go racing.
- 19:15And I just started doing well. I started getting promoted.
- 19:19That was when I was Rusty's account manager at Sports Image
- 19:22when we merged with Action Performance in 1997.
- 19:25So I graduate College in 95. I'm still racing in 96.
- 19:29The late model program kind of fell together because you, I
- 19:32mean, I'm working, you know what my brother's got to do?
- 19:36Work in the race shop. Work in the race shop.
- 19:38I remember your dad trying to get him out of bed by 11 or
- 19:40noon. Yeah, this was the that was that
- 19:43era. Dale Junior won't get out of
- 19:44bed. And and so I'll just Fast
- 19:47forward this story. My dad, I know, was extremely
- 19:50proud of me. He sent me to sports image to
- 19:52work. He sent me to action performance
- 19:54to work. It was kind of always arm's link
- 19:56business, you know, from from the Delano incorporate.
- 19:59Everybody's like, why didn't you ever work there?
- 20:01And so this is 97. I'm doing really well.
- 20:04I'm getting promoted, I'm moving up the ladder, I'm over
- 20:07purchasing. I'm going to Phoenix with Fred
- 20:10Wagenalls and doing business. I mean, I'm doing all these
- 20:13great things, right? I'm making a six figure salary.
- 20:16At 27 and dad does 2001. I'm so sorry.
- 20:25And but you know what, I got set up for success because of that.
- 20:31I all of those things that happened in.
- 20:36So I'm, I'm still working for Action Performance and you know
- 20:39what life was like then We were going through the autopsy
- 20:42picture debacle. Obviously when you make
- 20:45merchandise for someone, everybody's feigning for it
- 20:49after the death, right? And so I got caught up at work
- 20:54in the middle of family problems because Teresa was focused on
- 20:59the autopsy. She was, she just lost her
- 21:01husband for God's sakes, right? I don't say that negatively that
- 21:03I got caught up, but I'm sitting in meetings going we need these
- 21:07approvals, we need to make more die cast.
- 21:10We need to make more of this. And I was like, man, this is
- 21:12just too much for me. Like I can't do this right.
- 21:14This is my dad, this is my family.
- 21:16I can't be put in this position. So I called Dale in and Dale
- 21:22always told me he can never afford for me to come work for
- 21:24him. So I called Dale in August of
- 21:262001 and I was like, look, I'm going to take a pay cut.
- 21:29I'm told the story, it's in my book and everything.
- 21:30I'm going to take a pay cut. I got to come work for you.
- 21:32I got to get. And this will make people go
- 21:36after your book driven, right? Drive.
- 21:38Yep. Drive, drive.
- 21:40And I said I got to, I got to come work for you.
- 21:44You need me and I need you, and I'll come work for whatever.
- 21:47So I took a 50% pay cut and went to start managing his business
- 21:51because here's what I knew. I knew that Teresa would not
- 21:54look after Dale Junior like my dad looked after Dale Junior.
- 21:57Dale Junior and I were close growing up.
- 21:59Our parents divorced when we were four.
- 22:01I mothered the hell out of that kid, you know I was.
- 22:06I mean, I gave him the lunch money every day.
- 22:08I did everything for him. I financed his first computer.
- 22:13Finance. Finance at Best Buy.
- 22:18Yeah. I was just talking about layaway
- 22:20the other day. Isn't that so funny?
- 22:21All these things are signed and finance.
- 22:23Yeah, that. Was a good.
- 22:25Thing, right? And so, and so it all worked out
- 22:28because I didn't know my dad was going to die.
- 22:32And I, I was so racing, not working out, you know, I stopped
- 22:37racing just because that fell apart.
- 22:38And I was doing so good in business that we just, you know,
- 22:42we just didn't try to make it any different.
- 22:45And now I then I understood why, why we always don't know the
- 22:48plan. That was the plan.
- 22:50And I wholeheartedly believe that was the plan.
- 22:53So I started working for Dale and and here I am 23 years
- 22:56later. Yeah.
- 22:57And, and I want to, I want to let everybody know and that my
- 23:00friends, like Paul Harvey says, that's the rest of the story.
- 23:06And and that's why she was voted one of the most top influential
- 23:10people in business in NASCAR, because you went to college,
- 23:14even though maybe you didn't feel your dad's love and it was
- 23:17rough on you. Like I sometimes I don't feel
- 23:19Rusty's love. He's busy chewing my ass out.
- 23:22But but I mean. I knew I was loved.
- 23:27I just loved differently. I knew I was loved.
- 23:30Yes, and and now you become so smart because you go to college,
- 23:35you learn how to dot the IS cross the T's, you know, where
- 23:38the where the comma's AT and quote all that stuff.
- 23:42And wow, that's a really good story.
- 23:45So we got to, you know, your your book.
- 23:48I want to make sure everybody knows about that.
- 23:50That's pretty incredible. My book I wrote in COVID, God
- 23:55bless. I wrote it before COVID, but it
- 23:56released April 7th of 2020, which was three weeks after
- 24:00COVID started. So it was not as fun and
- 24:03successful as that could have been, but it's still out there
- 24:06in the market. Look it up.
- 24:07It's called Drive Nine Ways to Win in business, in Life,
- 24:11written by me and and it's a good book.
- 24:14Everybody likes it that reads it.
- 24:15Kelly I believe in re releases. Lots of story, lots of stories
- 24:20out there. Things things get lost in movies
- 24:23that get re released and you know, so yeah, maybe we need to
- 24:28re release that just because of the story you just told is
- 24:32pretty fantastic. And people have these images,
- 24:34Kelly, that you're Dale Earnhardt, you know, daughter
- 24:37and, and he laid it all out there for you.
- 24:39But you, you, you work, you work for it.
- 24:43And, and you went to work for other people.
- 24:45So do. Do you think the reason you
- 24:48didn't work at DI is because that would have been family
- 24:51working for family? Do you think that was strategy
- 24:53on his part? I think a little bit, but I
- 24:56think it had more to do with Teresa than anything, to be
- 25:00quite honest. But, and so he could put me in
- 25:03arm's length businesses that made sense and he did.
- 25:06And you know, I worked at the dealership.
- 25:08I was a receptionist at the advertised dealership when I was
- 25:10in, in the summer and I, I sold shoes at Peggy's shoes in
- 25:14Mooresville. And oh, I worked, I worked at
- 25:17winn-dixie. That was my favorite job, but I
- 25:20got grounded and had to quit. What'd you get grounded for?
- 25:24I was at a boy's house. I wasn't supposed to be.
- 25:26Oh. Yeah, so, so I'm, I was a senior
- 25:33in high school. Your dad grounded you.
- 25:36What did he say to you? My.
- 25:37Dad was tough buddy and so this is what happened.
- 25:41We were at the farm on Hwy. 3 and we lived across town on the
- 25:47lake and I told my dad that I had to go to CVS to pick up some
- 25:53school stuff for a project. Were you lying?
- 25:57I'm a senior, Yeah, were. You lying.
- 25:59I was lying and so I wanted to go see my boyfriend and my dad
- 26:04didn't really allow me to have boyfriends and in that day like
- 26:07dating and boyfriends were a little different anyway, right?
- 26:09Like you like it was just different so I to get to his
- 26:14house. There's a you like on Hwy. 3.
- 26:17You can take highway 3 to 150 and go to my lake house.
- 26:22Two turns to get to this guy's house was a little back
- 26:25neighborhood that you cut through to cut down by the
- 26:28church to cut down by the high school to cut down by here.
- 26:31What my dad did to take that route that day.
- 26:35I will never understand. I guess just to catch me.
- 26:37No. Yeah.
- 26:38So he, he takes this route, which is not the route he takes
- 26:41every day. And my car's parked out in front
- 26:44of these people's house. It's like just, you know, an
- 26:48older town area with just house by house by house.
- 26:51And my boyfriend's mom says Kelly, your dad's about to knock
- 26:56on our door. Did your heart come out of your
- 26:59chest? I mean, when you got in trouble
- 27:03with my dad, you got in trouble, you feared for your life.
- 27:06He knocked on the door and he said, you tell Kelly she is to
- 27:10come get in her car right now and to get her ass home.
- 27:13And oh, my God, I, I probably rode with my butt clenched the
- 27:16whole time, right? Yeah, I got in so much trouble,
- 27:20but I got I got grounded and had to quit my job at Winn-dixie.
- 27:23Do you think you got? I think you got ratted out.
- 27:25I think somebody's I. Don't know.
- 27:27I mean, who would have rat me? I don't.
- 27:28I don't know. I don't know.
- 27:30I don't know. Wow.
- 27:31This. Or maybe he just had intuition,
- 27:33who knows. He knew his girls.
- 27:35That's that's that's, that's funny and sweet at the same.
- 27:38It, it, it makes me happy that he loved you so much.
- 27:41He wanted to protect you. Oh.
- 27:43He did, yeah. Yeah.
- 27:44OK. So first of all, thank you so
- 27:47much. That was a wonderful 20 minutes
- 27:50right there. A lot about you.
- 27:53And I know it's in your book, but you know me, I'm big on that
- 27:57generation gap. And and and this one's only been
- 28:00two years since COVID, so we're gonna we're gonna sell more
- 28:03copies. OK.
- 28:06When I go to social media, I see everything you say.
- 28:10And you were sweet to me about a week ago.
- 28:13You said, how about this for a happy story?
- 28:15Kenny Wallace, this Dale Earnhardt, this Dale Junior
- 28:20Foundation. Junior Motorsports.
- 28:23Is you were you were on a soapbox that day talking about
- 28:26unhappy things. Yeah.
- 28:28I forget what it was. There was something going on and
- 28:31everything was unhappy in the world.
- 28:32Yeah, I think, I think it's therapy for me because like the,
- 28:36the Kenny right here is way different than the Kenny on the
- 28:41couch in the morning. Oh, yeah.
- 28:43And then, and then there's a, then there's, yeah, there's
- 28:45coffee with Kenny. Then there's a Kenny right here.
- 28:47Like, I don't know, coffee with Kenny.
- 28:49I don't know who that is. He's the unmedicated version of
- 28:52you when you wake up in the morning.
- 28:54And then, then there's the, the Kenny up at the race shop where
- 28:57I'm, you know, get my race car ready.
- 29:00Then there's the, I think there's four or five of me
- 29:03actually. So, OK, the Dale, the Dale
- 29:10Junior Foundation to celebrate your brother with 1,000,000
- 29:15followers on Instagram. You're, you're donated $1
- 29:20million. And I did a little research last
- 29:22night because I knew we were going to talk today this also
- 29:26feed North Carolina. So just just tell me a little
- 29:29bit about this. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:31So you know, Dale has a foundation that we started in
- 29:332007 and you, you know, you get all the requests where you send
- 29:37this for this, we send that for that.
- 29:39We support this. And I just told Dale man, we
- 29:41need to really corral this because we have a lot of
- 29:44opportunity to use our celebrity ISM and and famousness for good
- 29:49and right. So, so let's corral this and
- 29:54let's focus on youth and let's do this.
- 29:56So that's what we did. And so one of the projects that
- 30:00you were talking about feed and see, that's our soup kitchen for
- 30:03Mooresville. It's got a nice new name, but it
- 30:06started as the Mooresville soup kitchen, which we've supported
- 30:10all of our time. And but they want to eradicate
- 30:15the need for soup kitchen. They want to eradicate
- 30:18homelessness. And since COVID, as so many
- 30:21know, you don't even have to be homeless anymore to have
- 30:25problems. Your firefighter teacher,
- 30:27family, they're not making it. They're they're struggling.
- 30:31Their groceries are more expensive.
- 30:33All these things, right? So feed and C is a, an
- 30:36organization that just provides opportunity for people that need
- 30:41it to better themselves. They've got a grocery store,
- 30:45they have culinary classes where they teach people skills to go
- 30:48out and get jobs. They, you can go there and eat
- 30:52every day and you know what it's you only pay a donation.
- 30:55There's no charges on the menu. And all of their culinary school
- 30:59people cook your food and fix the food.
- 31:01So they, you can go there and take a shower and do your
- 31:04laundry and all these kinds of things.
- 31:05You can get counseling services, you can figure out how to go get
- 31:08the right kind of housing for you if you're, you know, if you
- 31:11can't afford housing, etcetera. So, so tons of stuff there, but
- 31:16they to build this facility and, and to to charge this course
- 31:20that they have, they had a lot of different opportunities and
- 31:24they built a garden. And this garden feeds the
- 31:27restaurant that feeds the culinary classes, that feeds the
- 31:30ability for these people to get out on their feet and, you know,
- 31:34make a way for themselves. So my mom was very into
- 31:37gardening. We lost my mom in 2019 from lung
- 31:40cancer, C65 and this project just spoke to us, Mimi's garden.
- 31:46And so it is a about a maybe A2 acre garden.
- 31:53We just added a kids sensory area so that kids can go out
- 31:57there and have some fun. We have these tall sunflowers
- 32:00out there with all of my mom's grandkids names on it.
- 32:02So it's Mimi's garden, little ladybugs.
- 32:04And they're just growing stuff left and right.
- 32:07They're they're growing flowers for the table.
- 32:09They're growing, you know, all kind of stuff.
- 32:11So the $1,000,000, Dell's foundation, every year we raise
- 32:15at least $1,000,000, if not more.
- 32:18And this we, we wanted to do something.
- 32:21We didn't want to say, oh, hey, hey, Dell's got, you know, a
- 32:23million followers. How great.
- 32:26We wanted to do good with it. And so we came up with this idea
- 32:29to take the top ten states where we're followed on Instagram.
- 32:35And in those ten cities, cities, sorry, not states in those ten
- 32:40cities, we identified an organization that we would
- 32:45support normally through our efforts of the foundation.
- 32:48And we are donating $100,000 to each of those 10 organizations
- 32:52to make the $1,000,000. And just to celebrate, you know,
- 32:57our fan base is the reason we get to do this, right, Kenny,
- 33:00everything that we touch and do. And so to celebrate our fans and
- 33:05their loyalty. And they're following and
- 33:07they're fun. You know, that's what we did.
- 33:11So we put it back from their cities and, and it's it's
- 33:14awesome. I, I asked you a question about
- 33:19this and you, you bring up things.
- 33:21I, I listen to Howard Stern. I don't agree with everything,
- 33:24but I like how Howard Stern interviews people.
- 33:26So I'm listening and, and now I'm going to ask you a question
- 33:30that I never dreamed of, but mental health.
- 33:34I hear more and more about this. I grew up in nine.
- 33:37I was born in 1963, I'm a lot older than you and.
- 33:42Not a lot, just eight years. Not years.
- 33:44Well, but but I remember in my day fending for myself.
- 33:50You didn't talk about it. No.
- 33:51Yeah. You, you, you just.
- 33:53You, you, you know, you're, you're weak.
- 33:56Get it done yourself. So I want to ask you your
- 34:00opinion, do you think mental health has always been around
- 34:04and for some reason it's just now struck a chord in this time?
- 34:09You know, you had 16 hundreds of 1700s, Yeah, all this life,
- 34:13hundreds of years. And now the period that you and
- 34:17I live right now and everybody's like, man, this.
- 34:20Well, I. Think, I think mental health's
- 34:22always been an issue and I guess I would frame it up like this
- 34:25like I think mental health has become more of an issue because,
- 34:36you know, life has life is, is changing and growing and we're,
- 34:41you know, I, I think about, you know, if you're talking about
- 34:44the 17, let's let's go to the 1900s 'cause I don't really know
- 34:47much about 17 or 1800s or the 1900s where, where mom and kids
- 34:54and dad worked the farm worked the whatever worked the deal,
- 34:56did what they did, fed themselves, right?
- 35:00They were, they had to depend on themselves, right?
- 35:02Was it hard? But they were a unit.
- 35:04They did it together. Da da, da, da da da da da.
- 35:07Then you move on, you know, into, I mean, of course, that's
- 35:10like the early 1900s. But you go you just as you move
- 35:14through decades, we're our world is just changing so fast.
- 35:20And the the ability to talk about mental health is there
- 35:25now, right? You only had to go.
- 35:27I didn't have anybody to talk about my feelings when I was a
- 35:30kid. My dad said you do this, you do
- 35:35it this way and you do it now. And if you don't do it?
- 35:39Then I'm gonna bust your ass. Don't.
- 35:41Get this. You don't get this, I'll bust
- 35:42your ass. You don't get this.
- 35:45Now, not saying that's not the right way to do it.
- 35:47Yeah, right. But.
- 35:50But what did you know? What did Kelly hear?
- 35:52You know, if you don't do this, you're not good enough to da,
- 35:56da, da, da, da da. Right?
- 35:57I got my old. I've been through a lot of
- 35:58therapy. I got my old childhood trauma.
- 36:00And I'll talk about that in my book, too.
- 36:01Yeah, me too, you know, and, and there's a place for it all, I
- 36:07guess. You know, I, I think there's
- 36:08just a an outlet. Social media has made it so much
- 36:13worse because I didn't really know that I needed to talk to
- 36:17anybody. I didn't know it was any
- 36:19different. Now I get to look across the
- 36:21Internet and, you know, I get to decide whether people are
- 36:25prettier than me, whether they have more money than me.
- 36:28And I'm talking about if I was a teen, right?
- 36:29Like, I mean, it's just crazy all the the things that that our
- 36:34kids especially, and our teens and our 20 some year olds, the
- 36:39pressure on them to be something and they can't.
- 36:43And the world's too critical if you're not what they think you
- 36:47need to be, right? The world's so critical.
- 36:52You wrote that just. A little bit, yes, tell.
- 36:54Me. OK, so I want to leave that up
- 36:56there for a little bit. If you don't show appreciation
- 36:59to those that deserve it, they'll learn to stop doing the
- 37:03things you appreciate. OK, so when Kelly Earnhardt
- 37:06Miller, when she speaks, I, I, I listen.
- 37:12You don't got to name names when I say things.
- 37:17There's a person that triggered me.
- 37:19That that I got, I was triggered, absolutely.
- 37:22I was triggered by somebody in my family and for me to process
- 37:31those thoughts, I needed to put that out there.
- 37:35Good for you. I didn't have the ability to put
- 37:37that out there 30 years ago. I didn't have a, I didn't have
- 37:40Instagram, you know, like, it's a way of processing, right?
- 37:43Like, and, and it's a way of, of speaking And, and, you know, I
- 37:49think, I think talks are healthy and I think we're, but we're
- 37:54also scared to talk to people. We're also scared to talk to
- 37:56people we love. We're scared to let them down.
- 37:58We're scared to disappoint them. We're scared to be judged, you
- 38:00know, all of those different kinds of things, even with our
- 38:03own family, let alone all the goons that live on social media.
- 38:07You know, coffee, we're the same.
- 38:10You, you and I are the same. Coffee with Kenny is years ago.
- 38:15Years ago, everybody wrote in the diary.
- 38:17Yeah. That's my diary coffee with
- 38:19Kenny this morning. I woke up and I was jacked up on
- 38:22Mountain Dew about these. These local tracks need to be
- 38:26over at 9:30 at night. Yeah, so.
- 38:29Note to self on social media, if you see Kelly posting a lot of
- 38:32stuff about that, she got something going on.
- 38:35Well, that's what we got to. I love it completely.
- 38:38OK, so I do this with everybody. See here.
- 38:42Yeah. I I work hard.
- 38:44I don't want to embarrass myself.
- 38:46So this one here I wrote, and I'm going to go ahead and ask
- 38:49it. Can can you tell your brother
- 38:54Dale Junior? Can you tell him what to do and
- 38:58and do you get in knock down drag out arguments?
- 39:02Have you ever thrown stuff at each other?
- 39:04How? Oh.
- 39:05God, how? Sister and brother, are you all?
- 39:09Right, so. So.
- 39:14So until probably until 10/12/13 years ago, I could pretty much
- 39:26tell him whatever to do. It was just him, you know, I,
- 39:31you know, if I said that such and such need to be done for
- 39:34this cause or whatever it was business wise or whatever.
- 39:37I mean, he, you know, he was busy being a race car driver
- 39:40and, and I did the business and that was what we're doing.
- 39:42And we, you know, it's funny, we never, I was always just kind of
- 39:49the mother figure. We, we, we have a great
- 39:52relationship, but it's not like we ever spend a lot of time in
- 39:56each others minds, if that makes sense.
- 39:58You know, when my dad died, we didn't even hardly talk about my
- 40:02daddy's death. He did his things with his
- 40:04friends. I grieved in my way.
- 40:07You know, we didn't sit down and talk about then.
- 40:09We we do that a lot more often now, which I love, No.
- 40:12Maintenance, Brother. And my brother's wife, Amy, has
- 40:17really brought him, you know, into this world, right?
- 40:22Like, what's it like to answer to people and to know people and
- 40:27have relationships with people? Because in Dale's world, he was
- 40:30always used to being told what to do.
- 40:32Sponsorship driving business, That was what drove it, right?
- 40:37Never thought about it that way. And, and so, you know, he just
- 40:40went to the next. I mean, Dad told it started with
- 40:42Dad Kenny. Dad always told us what to do.
- 40:44When you went to dinner with my dad, you stood around the table
- 40:49to wait for him to tell you where to sit.
- 40:51I believe that. Yeah, you didn't just sit down.
- 40:54So. So we started back then.
- 40:57So we were always used to being told what to do.
- 40:59It's funny because. He did the same thing with all
- 41:01of us like we were on he. Yeah, I get.
- 41:04He just waited to hear what he said.
- 41:06We just waited on. It we would do, you know, photo
- 41:09sessions and he would tell everybody, all right, this is
- 41:11the last one. He told everybody to talk.
- 41:14With Neil, it didn't matter. It did not matter.
- 41:18And so and so, yeah, like we probably had more situations
- 41:25where we've disagreed in the last 10 or 15 years than we ever
- 41:28did. And it's only, it's, it's not,
- 41:32it's just simply because it's just not me and him anymore,
- 41:35right? And it's just not about
- 41:36business. He's got a wife, he's got kids.
- 41:39He's, you know, there's just so many more things that he's aware
- 41:43of and, and, and all and, and our business, since he quit
- 41:46driving, he's very much more involved in our business.
- 41:48And I'll be like, well, I've always done it that way.
- 41:51And you just didn't know. I really upset him not too long
- 41:54ago because I said, and I didn't mean it in the way that he took
- 42:00it, but I said the words. I ran this business for 25
- 42:03years. I don't really need you.
- 42:06And I didn't mean that I didn't need him because he's the reason
- 42:09that I got to run the business. Yeah, Yeah, I get it.
- 42:12But what I meant was I've been making all these decisions and
- 42:15he was. Racing.
- 42:16Yeah, if you, you know, if you want to be part of the decision
- 42:19or if you want to be part of the situation, let's do it together.
- 42:22And if you don't just stay home, right, Well, I'll still get
- 42:24stuff done. And I, you know, it really hurt
- 42:27his feelings and but we had a good talk about it.
- 42:32That's the good thing is we can talk about that kind of stuff
- 42:34now. And, and there was one other
- 42:37time I got mad at work, which he and I have talked about this
- 42:40too, so I don't mind sharing it, but I got really frustrated with
- 42:43them at work about, I don't know, it's probably like 2015
- 42:49and going down to my office, I had all of my dad's uniforms
- 42:55lined up in these cases that people had given me.
- 42:58I'm lucky to have a Tasmanian devil uniform that a friend gave
- 43:02to me. I'm lucky to have a different
- 43:07uniform that I think Tony Stewart gave to me.
- 43:10So I have these couple of of of dad things, 33 suit, three suits
- 43:18lined up and I got so mad I was going to quit and I took all
- 43:22them suits out of there and I put no junior suits in them.
- 43:26You. Were pissed.
- 43:27Oh, I took all my stuff out of my office and took it all home
- 43:29in a box. And, well, he didn't know
- 43:32because he didn't come in the office that much.
- 43:36You couldn't get him, damn it. And so I got over it.
- 43:40And, you know, I got over it within about a week, but I never
- 43:44put my suits back up. And it took him forever to
- 43:47realize that my dad's suits were missing.
- 43:49And so one day we were talking about it and I told him.
- 43:51I was like, I got really mad with you, and I almost quit.
- 43:54You didn't know I quit, but I did quit.
- 43:56But you didn't know it. Yeah, yeah, you got it.
- 43:59All of. Them down and it's all in my
- 44:01house in a tub now and and and she's like.
- 44:05I'm thinking physically you had to be enraged because you had to
- 44:08do the work to to get all everything out of there and.
- 44:12I was enraged. Yeah, well, we all do, yeah.
- 44:16Love would do that to you. Listen, love would do that to.
- 44:19You. I love that.
- 44:21I love. Love will do that to you.
- 44:23Yeah, Crazy love. I, Kim and I will get in an
- 44:26argument. And later on, I'm like, listen,
- 44:28sit down. You know, she's hardcore.
- 44:31Kim grew up in the city. She'll bust your ass.
- 44:33You know, it's like, honey, I love you.
- 44:36And that's the thing about me. I need to calm down when I get
- 44:39mad. I need and and if people
- 44:42continue to push me and push my buttons and push For more
- 44:45information and try to get me to say why that don't go well, I
- 44:49need to get away from it. I need to calm down 'cause I
- 44:53will do or say things that might not be the best things to do or
- 44:57say at the time. Yeah, I, I call that in
- 44:59Missouri, I call that going postal because the, the postal
- 45:03workers years ago, you know, they just dealt with everybody
- 45:06came in the post office had an issue.
- 45:08Mad. Mad and and and probably the
- 45:11post office worker goes postal. Oh.
- 45:14Yeah. And that was a bad time in life,
- 45:15and we won't go there. But they went postal.
- 45:18All right, let's have fun. And then we'll get to these
- 45:22charters because that's what's, you know, on the docket.
- 45:26In his mind, right? Right.
- 45:28But I want to talk about Wyatt, your son, LW, your your husband
- 45:35and you, you have, you have three children.
- 45:38Wyatt is with LW. He's a great racer.
- 45:43Of course you have Carson and Kennedy, but let's go with LWI.
- 45:47Really liked one of your social media posts.
- 45:49It made me you were so real. You were on the road racing, but
- 45:53you said sheltering in place at the pilot.
- 45:56Bad storms shed a little light on Wyatt.
- 46:01What you're going to, what you're trying to do with him.
- 46:02And tell me about when you go racing with him.
- 46:06Yeah, yeah. So Wyatt started Outlaw Kart
- 46:08racing and in 2020, right after, you know, like August of 2020
- 46:14was his first race or July and eight years old.
- 46:18And my husband said until he asked to race, he's not going to
- 46:22race. He's going to kill his first
- 46:24deer before he races. And so they were actually out in
- 46:27Illinois putting up deer stands in July for the coming season.
- 46:33And our friend had an extra outlaw cart and he's like, you
- 46:36know what, You're coming this weekend.
- 46:37Let Wyatt try this cart out. My son's doing it da, da, da.
- 46:40Well, guess what? We raced on Friday.
- 46:43We raced on Saturday. I get a call from my husband who
- 46:48says, hey, if we can work this out in three weeks, we can run
- 46:52the nationals at English Creek in 2020, which is a big deal,
- 46:56you know, in Knoxville, IA near the Knoxville Raceway to go to
- 47:00English Creek and run the nationals for Outlaw Karting.
- 47:02And I'm like, Oh my God, where did this come from?
- 47:05Our boy wasn't going to race. And now all of a sudden we ran
- 47:07one race and we're just going to do this.
- 47:09And he went out there and, and won the nationals in about after
- 47:14he raced for like, I don't know, five or six times in the
- 47:17beginner box stock outlaw CART at 8 years old.
- 47:20So from there we're running outlaw karts, micros.
- 47:24Our racing life today is 600 micro sprints.
- 47:28We run Millbridge every other week when they run.
- 47:30But we started traveling due to the outlaw cart traveling.
- 47:34We started traveling to the Midwest and and that's where we
- 47:37do a lot of racing. We come to Missouri and when
- 47:40when I say we come to to all these places, we have a Super C
- 47:45camper and we have a 26 foot trailer.
- 47:48Now we do, we do race for Chad Boat and so they carry our car
- 47:53most of the time. But when we were outlaw car
- 47:55racing, we carried everything. But we jump in our camper on a
- 47:58Thursday after school. Wyatt goes to a three day in
- 48:00school and two day out of school program.
- 48:02We jump in the camper Thursday afternoon.
- 48:06We drive five to six hours wherever we're headed.
- 48:08We get up Friday morning, we drive the other 456 hours,
- 48:12whatever it is. We haul up to the dirt track.
- 48:15We set up camp and we race Friday night and we race
- 48:18Saturday night and we get back in the camper and we drive
- 48:20another hour or two at night and then Sunday we finish the drive
- 48:23home. We race in this weekend.
- 48:26We're going to Coles County Speedway in Mattoon, IL But
- 48:30we've come out to, I mean, we've we've driven to Missouri,
- 48:34Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and we've raced in Nebraska.
- 48:39I mean, yeah, we've ran into you on the road before in Saint
- 48:41Louis. You're you're around me a lot
- 48:44and and I leave you alone a lot of times.
- 48:47You're. I don't.
- 48:48Even know you're there. I know.
- 48:49You know, but, but no, I mean, there are times you're an hour
- 48:52from my house. Oh, yeah.
- 48:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what I mean by that.
- 48:57OK, so is he going to be is, is Wyatt?
- 49:03I I see how talented he is. Wyatt loves racing.
- 49:05He loves it. Do you do you think as a child
- 49:09he just absorbed it kind of like Chase Elliott did, Dale Junior
- 49:13did? Why is he so good?
- 49:15I think he did. So, you know, my husband is a
- 49:18racer. Obviously he moved down to North
- 49:20Carolina from Pennsylvania to race and ARCA modified champion
- 49:24and and stopped racing when why it was born at my request, I
- 49:28would say. I just thought it was, you know,
- 49:31we're, we're trying to live a life and raise kids and we were
- 49:34hobby racing, you know, hobby racing in modifieds, you know
- 49:39this. Ain't go.
- 49:40This ain't going anywhere. We're just going to race is all
- 49:42we're. Going to do right so so you
- 49:46know, I, I I think he's paid attention, but Kenny I just
- 49:50think he has natural talent. We go to a lot of race tracks
- 49:55that he's never sit foot on and goes out there and runs well he
- 50:00runs with the best of them. He races, you know, some of my
- 50:04proudest. This is funny too.
- 50:06I like going to race with competition.
- 50:11I want to go race Frank Flood and all of these great micro
- 50:16erasers with my 12 year old son and I want competition.
- 50:21You know, I want to beat the best.
- 50:22I want to be among the best. I want to see Wyatt, you know,
- 50:26being 20th and work his way to 10th.
- 50:29For whatever reason. I don't want Wyatt to go out
- 50:31there in a field of five cars and win every week.
- 50:34That's not good for him. And, and so that's what we do.
- 50:38We, we go up to Indiana, we go all over the place.
- 50:40I, I have a joke. I I've spent the night in more
- 50:44Walmart parking lots than I've shopped.
- 50:46I did that with Schrader a lot and I shopped at.
- 50:48Walmart a lot too. And some of the some of the
- 50:51Walmarts won't let you park. They won't, but there's a,
- 50:54there's a website. You got to go on and look.
- 50:56Yeah, yeah, I. Want to say that it makes me
- 51:00really happy that I thought I was the only one that you know I
- 51:05I told your brother, I said listen, when my NASCAR career is
- 51:08over, I'm going to go dirt racing.
- 51:10Your brother Dale Junior said I'm going to go late Donald
- 51:13stock racing. But I never what what makes me
- 51:16so happy is that you and I were were were these big NASCAR
- 51:21people. I've been on national TV.
- 51:22I run 905 races, but your lingo, your lingo fits right in with
- 51:29all the dirt divers, you know, English Creek and Coles County
- 51:32and and I also saw on social media where you like somebody
- 51:36coming along and you SAC Nation, you really got it going on,
- 51:40don't you? With dirt racing, you're you're
- 51:42dirt. Racing I love it I mean it's
- 51:44it's it's you know it's easy and not complicated right you you
- 51:49roll in there and you know there's some tracks that are
- 51:52just great and have awesome facilities and there's other
- 51:55places where they're just little shit holes you know you're.
- 51:58Picking the bed. Right.
- 52:01And I'm sitting in the grandstands getting dirt thrown
- 52:03all over me. I got my my dirt crap shoes.
- 52:06And I mean, I don't, I don't look like 1,000,000 bucks when I
- 52:09get there. I'm in my jeans and Tees and
- 52:12muddy clothes and ready, ready, ready to go.
- 52:15You know, I'm, I'm making food, I'm doing the logistics.
- 52:18I'm whatever you know. Yeah.
- 52:20And, and, and this, you know, when we talk, sometimes I like
- 52:24to give my own commentary. I want this, I want this to be a
- 52:27lesson to some of the people out there listening to Kelly because
- 52:31just because, you know, we all were NASCAR and and we had to
- 52:35shave because we had to be presentable for our sponsors,
- 52:38we're racers at heart, aren't we, Kelly?
- 52:40Absolutely, absolutely. And it's actually very relaxing
- 52:43to just put on jeans and T-shirts and be normal, OK?
- 52:47And I appreciate people at the race tracks when you run into me
- 52:51just to treat me normal, like I just want to be treated normal.
- 52:54You know, I get up in those stands and I'll get recognized
- 52:56that we were at Coles County a couple weeks ago and had this
- 52:59gentleman start talking to me. And I mean, of course, he's
- 53:01like, I love what you guys do and da, da, da, da.
- 53:03But we were just able to have a normal conversation, you know,
- 53:06like I just, I just like for it. I'm I'm there for the same
- 53:09reasons that everybody else is there to enjoy themselves and
- 53:11have a good time. I'm not there to be Kelly
- 53:13Earnhardt. Yeah, right.
- 53:15OK, let's go to the girls. Kennedy.
- 53:18Kennedy is 17. She's absolutely a model.
- 53:21Thank you. Just graduated high school last
- 53:23week. I see that.
- 53:25Crazy. Tell, tell me about Kennedy.
- 53:27How you gonna? Yeah, contain that beautiful
- 53:29girl. I'm sure all the guys are all
- 53:31over her. So it's funny too, 'cause I, I
- 53:33want to brag on all of my kids about racing.
- 53:35Carson started racing at age 9. And I'm getting to Carson.
- 53:38But Kennedy just. Graduated.
- 53:40Kennedy started racing at age 5. All of my kids have raced at
- 53:43Millbridge and one at Millbridge.
- 53:45They all love racing and Kennedy just graduated.
- 53:49She wants to be a cosmetologist, so you have a daughter that does
- 53:52that. Yep.
- 53:53Yes, Brandy. And she wants to do hair and
- 53:55lashes and and you know, extensions and, oh, extensions,
- 54:00extensions all. I know the logo.
- 54:02He loves makeup, so she that's what she wants to do.
- 54:06She owns her own salon. Well, that's awesome.
- 54:10Yeah, that's really cool because, yeah, my middle
- 54:12daughter Brandy, she was up there at Birkdale and had a nice
- 54:16little place for a while. I, my daughter Brandy got to be
- 54:21friends with the boats, the Blaney's.
- 54:23I kind of thought she was an open wheel, wheel girl because
- 54:25all all the daughters would go there and and Brandy had all
- 54:28the, she knew everything I said. Tell me what's up.
- 54:31Get get me the hey and you can get some good gossip at the hair
- 54:34salon. Oh, from the girls.
- 54:35Yeah. OK, so Carson.
- 54:38Carson, I want to pose this to you.
- 54:41I thought she was extremely talented racer.
- 54:44I thought she did. Thought she was incredible.
- 54:48Tell me about Carson and why I don't see her just racing all
- 54:53the time. So Carson loves racing.
- 54:55She started at 9:00 with Jimmy and the Outlaw carts and and ran
- 54:58and ran and ran and here's Carson Carson's very headstrong.
- 55:04Carson wasn't as sure that her parents knew what was best for
- 55:10her when Carson thought she knew what was best for her and she
- 55:14wanted to go Midget racing. She ran micros for a little bit
- 55:18or or maybe power eye with Chad for half a season and she wanted
- 55:23to go Midget racing. And so so I and she was this was
- 55:28her first year of college. So when she she was in the her
- 55:34last part of Senior High School and 1st part of college this
- 55:39year, that year. And I said, OK, well, you know,
- 55:43if that's what you want to do you, you, Carson is just a kid
- 55:46that you can't tell no, she's going to figure it out and she's
- 55:50going to go around you to figure it out.
- 55:51So you might as well jump in the boat and she's.
- 55:54A rebel? Help her do it the best way,
- 55:56right? So I jumped in the boat with her
- 55:59and we got sponsorship and we went racing Midget racing and we
- 56:04and you know, I, I think she'll admit too, she was a really good
- 56:07Midget racer. But but she probably could have
- 56:11stood a little bit more time behind the wheel in various at
- 56:14various places, right? So during that year she had
- 56:18probably about four wrecks that were pretty, pretty bad wrecks.
- 56:22You know, she tumbled out of shoot somewhere there in.
- 56:28You know, they raced in weeks, whatever their Tuesday to
- 56:30Saturday is or whatever. Illinois.
- 56:33Yeah, Illinois Midget week. Yeah, Indiana.
- 56:35One of those weeks that she ran, I forget where she was at, but
- 56:38she, I think it was Oklahoma. She tumbled out of the, you
- 56:42know, over the side and. Tumble means violent, wrecked.
- 56:47Yeah, violently flipped out of the racetrack.
- 56:49Schrader says. I tipped.
- 56:50I'm like Schrader. You look like a dog that you
- 56:53look like a dog that got a hold of a cat you wrecked violently.
- 56:57Oh yeah, and it's just tipping. I'm like y'all are crazy.
- 57:00And she had another, I think somewhere in Arizona towards the
- 57:03end of the season, the same thing happened.
- 57:05She had some concussions, had to go to the ER and all that good
- 57:07stuff. So, so we just really, I think
- 57:10she decided in her heart of hearts, like, you know, man,
- 57:13I'm, I've, I've flipped around. I'm like, man, you know, Mama,
- 57:17this is enough. Like this is a lot.
- 57:20And so that just kind of dissipated and she works for the
- 57:24car store now, so she the Lake Marvel car store.
- 57:28Yeah, Keely. Yeah, she runs social and
- 57:30digital and marketing for the car store.
- 57:33So she's having a lot of fun. She's here in my office, which
- 57:35is great. She finally, Kenny, I've always
- 57:37heard this. And you raised three daughters
- 57:40that you lose your girls somewhere around.
- 57:44I think it used to be like 15 to 19, but it might be more like 13
- 57:47to 19 now. And that they come back to you.
- 57:51And that's what happened with her, man.
- 57:53I could not tell her. I could not tell her what to do
- 57:56and how to do anything. She would not follow my advice.
- 57:59And now it's Mama. I wish I'd listen to you, Mama,
- 58:03you know? Yes, they come around because my
- 58:06my daughters are what are they, 30303436?
- 58:12It's insane. They love their mother.
- 58:14They're, they're here at the house when they can be here.
- 58:16I, I want to share this with you 'cause I think it's funny.
- 58:19And Carson will hear about this 'cause her friends will rat her
- 58:22out. I, I'm on Snapchat because it's
- 58:26underground and I can mother everybody and, and I, and I love
- 58:31it and I don't want nobody to see it though.
- 58:34That's why it's on Snapchat while Carson lives on there with
- 58:37me. Oh yes.
- 58:39And my mom was on Snapchat and like what?
- 58:42Like, no, mom, you can't be on Snapchat.
- 58:45And I think Chrissy Wallace must have got her on there.
- 58:49My mom was so mad at me. She goes, Kenneth, you cannot
- 58:53say the F word like that. I said, mom, it's just fun.
- 58:56It's Snapchat. I say it on purpose to get
- 58:59everybody thinks it's funny. She was so mad at me.
- 59:03I said OK, Mom, look, I'm gonna block you.
- 59:06I blocked on Snapchat too. I.
- 59:09Don't use Snapchat. I only got Snapchat so that I
- 59:12could sort of follow the girls. I don't know how to use
- 59:15Snapchat. My girls think it's hilarious
- 59:17because I'll take my phone up and I'm like, how do I do this?
- 59:19How do I get that? Even on Instagram, I'm still
- 59:21learning things to do. But Carson just said to me the
- 59:24other day, somebody we were talking me, her and Kennedy
- 59:27maybe and and Kenny was like, yeah, it was.
- 59:29She put it on Snapchat and Carson goes, I probably should
- 59:32unblock you from Snapchat now. Yeah.
- 59:34Well, yeah, it will. Carson, I I said something, you
- 59:39know, I wasn't bragging. I said, yeah, I had to block my
- 59:41mom, Carson piped up. And she goes, yeah, I had to
- 59:43block my mom too. And I don't want to know what
- 59:46I'm not seeing. OK, sometimes she's your mom is
- 59:49best. Well, she, she's having a good
- 59:51time and I love all your children equally.
- 59:54I don't, I don't, you know, I mean, they're they're they
- 59:56really are. You're you're doing a great job.
- 59:59OK, so. I have one question here.
- 1:00:05I do and I don't want to answer ask it, but I'm just going to go
- 1:00:08ahead. It it it says to I wrote this
- 1:00:10down last night laying in bed, I said.
- 1:00:13I did my best. Thinking yeah, I grabbed my
- 1:00:16phone and then I printed off, you know, how does Junior
- 1:00:20Motorsports work? How does Hendrick Motorsports
- 1:00:22help you all? What do they supply?
- 1:00:26Yeah. So, you know, they, Mr.
- 1:00:31Hendrick's obviously an owner here.
- 1:00:33Whenever we went to go drive for him, they had an Xfinity team.
- 1:00:37So we merged the two teams underneath our roof here because
- 1:00:39we had one and they had one. And in today's world, Hendrick
- 1:00:45Motorsports supplies our chassis, they supply our
- 1:00:48engines, and we just work really closely together on people,
- 1:00:54right? So obviously we have the Chevy
- 1:00:57tech piece of it that they're involved in, but not
- 1:01:00specifically for our Xfinity Series.
- 1:01:01Now they're running their own Xfinity car.
- 1:01:03So we work together with Greg Ives, who who runs that program.
- 1:01:07But you know, so there's, there's transactions that occur
- 1:01:12like financial transactions that occur with engines and chassis
- 1:01:15and all those kinds of things as a customer.
- 1:01:17But you know, really just supporting we, we've traded a
- 1:01:21lot of people back, right, Greg, Greg Ives came over here and
- 1:01:23crew chief, Kevin meandering crew chief and then went back
- 1:01:29over there. We've we've had engineers, we've
- 1:01:31got two engineers now. Adam Wall is one of them, the
- 1:01:34number 8 crew chief who came over here sort of on loan from
- 1:01:38Hendrick, you know, to hopefully advance his career back over
- 1:01:41there one day. So, you know, we do a lot of
- 1:01:43those kinds of things together and, you know, just help support
- 1:01:46each other where we can. Mr. Hendrick, for me personally,
- 1:01:49is one of my greatest mentors. I call him about all kinds of
- 1:01:55things and say, hey, you know, what are you hearing on this
- 1:01:58subject? What, you know, what do you
- 1:01:59think about this? Should we look at this?
- 1:02:03You know Mr. Hendrick, my grandfather, Robert G.
- 1:02:08The G man. The G Man worked for Mr.
- 1:02:10Hendrick. They were both from South Hill,
- 1:02:12VA. They came to North, you know,
- 1:02:15they moved to North Carolina, did the racing thing.
- 1:02:17My granddaddy was an employee over there until he passed in
- 1:02:2094. And so my Mr. Hendrick has
- 1:02:23always held a very high regard for my grandfather.
- 1:02:27And when my grandfather had a stroke, that's kind of where
- 1:02:31I've met Mr. Hendrick. I was in the hospital, cut my
- 1:02:36granddaddy's toenails as a college student.
- 1:02:38Oh. My gosh, look at you, so sweet.
- 1:02:42And Mr. Hendrick came to visit and I knew our families, you
- 1:02:46know, like after Mr. Hendrick lost his son and we lost our
- 1:02:50dad, or we, you know, actually lost our dad first.
- 1:02:55I mean, there were just a lot of synergies.
- 1:02:58Mr. Hendrick was always talked about in very high regard to my
- 1:03:02family from my grandfather and then my mom.
- 1:03:04And and so that relationship existed over there.
- 1:03:08And that's why us going to race there made sense to us in our
- 1:03:12mind. And he's just a great father
- 1:03:13figure. You know, we hang up the phone
- 1:03:16with I love you. I can call him with, with
- 1:03:19business or personal, you know, I can call and complain to him
- 1:03:22about Dale whatever I want to. Do I love it it?
- 1:03:26It's somebody that you feel like when you talk to, you're going
- 1:03:29to get there, you're going to get he's going to listen and
- 1:03:31he's going to give you the right answers.
- 1:03:34So before we we're going to the charters next, everybody and and
- 1:03:39Charlie Marlow will clip that part.
- 1:03:42And so you don't got to get to the end, but it's about Kelly.
- 1:03:46Kelly. I, I heard with with Hendrick,
- 1:03:48OK, I heard something and I want to see if you know anything
- 1:03:51about it. Speaking of mental health and
- 1:03:56psychology and in the sport, you know, world being the best you
- 1:04:00can be. So in NASCAR, NASCAR's brutal.
- 1:04:04You know, you got to be the best.
- 1:04:05Nobody better than me I hear at Hendrick, and I don't know if
- 1:04:09you do it at Junior Motorsports Hendrick, they have name tags
- 1:04:14and the name, the name tags have colors and those colors, green,
- 1:04:20whatever. Yeah, blue and.
- 1:04:21Yellow, OK, They they mean when you approach that person, look
- 1:04:25at that color and approach that person with this mindset.
- 1:04:30What is? I think that's incredible.
- 1:04:32I want everybody to hear this. Tell me about.
- 1:04:34This it's called MBS Management by Strength.
- 1:04:36You can look it up on the Internet.
- 1:04:38Mr. Hendrick uses this in all of his dealerships and then it, you
- 1:04:42know, morphed to the Motorsports piece of it.
- 1:04:45So when we again, when we merged with them in 2008, Mr. They told
- 1:04:49us about this program and we started to implement it as well.
- 1:04:54So it's, one would call it a personality test, but the beauty
- 1:04:58of it, it's really not that. Like I'm a red, imagine that and
- 1:05:03it all it is, is like if you just take the axis and if you're
- 1:05:06positive red, blue, yellow, green or negative red, blue,
- 1:05:10yellow, green. So I'm positive red and green
- 1:05:14and I'm negative yellow and blue.
- 1:05:17And I can tell you what those mean in a second.
- 1:05:19I'm more positive red, which means I'm dominant.
- 1:05:22And then green is extrovert, which you would be you would
- 1:05:26probably be a high green if I had to guess.
- 1:05:28And then blue is structure and yellow is pace.
- 1:05:34And by structure means how do you want things wrapped up in a
- 1:05:36bow to come to you and be presented.
- 1:05:38Pace is do you want to do things quickly or not quickly, right.
- 1:05:42Red are you dominant? Are you, you know, just, you
- 1:05:46know, going to blast in there and tell everybody what to do or
- 1:05:49or not. And then green, extrovert,
- 1:05:50introvert. And So what it does is, you
- 1:05:54know, everybody, everybody's like, oh, you're red.
- 1:05:56You're hard to get along with. I'm not.
- 1:05:58I mean, the beauty about me is I'm also a green.
- 1:06:00I'm very, you know, outgoing and da, da, da, da, da.
- 1:06:05And So what you do is you match up each other.
- 1:06:08And so like Dale is a blue, if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:06:11So that is structure. And So what you do is you put
- 1:06:16your graphs up and it tells you, hey, Kelly, if you've got a
- 1:06:19problem with Dale Junior, I don't need to go in as a red
- 1:06:23because Dale Junior's a blue. I need to go in this way and
- 1:06:27talk to Dale Junior. This is what's going to make
- 1:06:29Dale Junior listen and respond. Wow.
- 1:06:33It's not going to, he's not going to respond if I go in with
- 1:06:36my red tendencies because he's not a red.
- 1:06:37It's kind of like the love languages.
- 1:06:39Have you ever? No, but I love this it it it
- 1:06:42keeps. Me.
- 1:06:42I love more of you. Yes.
- 1:06:44Yeah. I love this.
- 1:06:45So with our teams, we do, we do training once a year, but you
- 1:06:49know, these guys work on a team of eight to 10 people, right?
- 1:06:53Or Dirty MO Media who has 15 employees.
- 1:06:56We we have all the charts up everybody's color.
- 1:06:59But it's great because if you're having trouble with someone work
- 1:07:03wise, you, you can lean into that to like really understand
- 1:07:08where they're coming from and where you need to come from.
- 1:07:10I, I the love languages. I love the five love languages.
- 1:07:14They do it for kids and all that now.
- 1:07:17But basically we as people are motivated by these love
- 1:07:22languages, right? Quality time I'm.
- 1:07:25Learning. I'm learning.
- 1:07:26Quality time, affection, affirmation, affirmation.
- 1:07:32So words of affirmation, time and service like somebody doing
- 1:07:37something for you. Let's see, words of affirmation
- 1:07:41times, gifts, if you like gifts and the fifth one, see, I'm not
- 1:07:46the fifth one, so I don't know what it is.
- 1:07:48I am acts of service and gifts. So like, I like people to do
- 1:07:53things for me that shows that they appreciate me.
- 1:07:56My husband, oh, touch touches the other one because my
- 1:07:59husband's touch and words of affirmation, my husband likes to
- 1:08:05be hugged. He likes for me to put my arm
- 1:08:07around him. He likes for me to tell him
- 1:08:11things about him that are good, you know, so and and that's the
- 1:08:15other. That's that's what that's about
- 1:08:17is like if Kenny and Kim, depending on what y'all are,
- 1:08:22Kenny needs to serve Kim the way she wants to be loved him needs
- 1:08:27to love Kenny the way he wants to be loved.
- 1:08:29And it's not the same always, right?
- 1:08:31Yeah. And, and the reason I asked this
- 1:08:34question about these colors, because when we work together
- 1:08:38in, in intense competition, you know, it's the motor man's
- 1:08:41fault. It's it's the, it's the body
- 1:08:43man. The driver can't drive the, the
- 1:08:46pit crew messed up. It could be a shit show real
- 1:08:49quick and I like that. I think that's.
- 1:08:52Pretty awesome. It's really cool.
- 1:08:54It's very helpful and our people would tell you that it's helpful
- 1:08:57if used appropriately. Yeah, good stuff and a good
- 1:08:59insight for everybody out there to understand.
- 1:09:02OK, this is it, everybody. This is what you've been waiting
- 1:09:05for. Charter.
- 1:09:06Charter. Charter.
- 1:09:08Charter. OK, I'm going to start like
- 1:09:09this. I've been, I've been paying
- 1:09:13attention, but I don't have a clue.
- 1:09:15Like you're the boss. You are the boss.
- 1:09:18OK. But from what I see right now,
- 1:09:24these teams and and and and you and Dale Junior, you guys
- 1:09:29replied, well, we're 30 million short and that was famous.
- 1:09:33So it it it appears to me right? Now that's a lot of people.
- 1:09:38I'm, I'm, I'm going to say this and I'll let you go.
- 1:09:40It appears to me that teams are only, the charter system is only
- 1:09:45worth what teams are willing to pay.
- 1:09:48It's not like the the Dodgers, they're worth 40.
- 1:09:51You can't put a value on it. Yeah.
- 1:09:53Trillion dollar, you know, so go ahead.
- 1:09:56This is what I know about business, OK.
- 1:09:59In any business that you run, you have an earnings before
- 1:10:04taxes and EBITDA your profit, right?
- 1:10:07So if I run a business and I and I make $10 and I spend 5 of it,
- 1:10:11my Ebitda's five, right? And so when you go into a
- 1:10:15business, you typically buy a business based on those earnings
- 1:10:18and it's you, you apply multiple to it.
- 1:10:21So, Kenny, if you have a business and it makes $5 a year,
- 1:10:26I'll give you $40 because I'm going to give you a multiple of
- 1:10:30eight and, and value your business.
- 1:10:33And you know, I'm going to take this business and build on.
- 1:10:35So my value, that's what you're talking about when you're
- 1:10:38talking about the value of the Red Sox or the Yankees or the
- 1:10:43football teams or whatever. Here's the problem.
- 1:10:46And, and, and I've always said something's only worth what
- 1:10:50somebody will pay for it, right? I mean, everybody asks me, you
- 1:10:52know, what's this diecast worth? I don't know.
- 1:10:55What will you give me for it? What's this diecast worth?
- 1:10:58What will you give me for it? And, and here's the problem with
- 1:11:04charters. In my opinion, they sit on your
- 1:11:08balance sheet as an appreciating asset.
- 1:11:11Nobody knows what to pay for them because the business model
- 1:11:17to running a Cup team is not a profitable business model.
- 1:11:22So I can't tell you that my Cup team will make $2,000,000 every
- 1:11:27year. And there's a value in that.
- 1:11:30There's a value. I mean, what everybody wants to
- 1:11:33be in business to make money, right?
- 1:11:35And so the charter, while I love that it is an asset that can
- 1:11:41appreciate it, also has a contract, seven-year contract
- 1:11:47tied to it. They those charters don't have
- 1:11:51to exist after that seven-year contract.
- 1:11:54So that's worth nothing. Then there's.
- 1:11:55No, I mean, right now they're essentially worth nothing out
- 1:11:58because this contract's about to expire that they're working on
- 1:12:02and, and, and it they're proving that it's whatever you'll give
- 1:12:05for it. Game Bridge paid 40 million.
- 1:12:09She's. Right.
- 1:12:10I mean fire, right? And you're just saying that it's
- 1:12:14true. That's true.
- 1:12:15The Charter, the the Stuart Halls Charters, I don't know
- 1:12:18what they're going for, but word on the streets, they're going
- 1:12:20for 25,000,000. That's not big.
- 1:12:22That's. A big gap.
- 1:12:24Yeah, it's a big gap. Word on the Street is the last
- 1:12:26charter that sold before all that was 13 million, you know.
- 1:12:31So my problem with it is that it's not about the value of the
- 1:12:35charter. I don't want to pay $30 million
- 1:12:37for something that I have no clue how to measure what it's
- 1:12:41worth. None.
- 1:12:42None, right. And I don't want to pay $30
- 1:12:45million for something that I also over here in the business
- 1:12:50model, I got to have 20 more million to run my race team and
- 1:12:55I might not make any money. Yeah, right, right.
- 1:13:00We're, we're, we're so sponsorship driven.
- 1:13:03Yes, we, we, you know, the fans there, they mean well, but the
- 1:13:09fan, the fans say, Wallace, you live in that $1,000,000 home,
- 1:13:14How do you say you didn't make no money?
- 1:13:17And I tell him, I said you don't.
- 1:13:20I win the Daytona 500 and I break even.
- 1:13:23I made the money on sponsorship. Jeggs pays me.
- 1:13:27Relationship. Jeggs pays me money, you know,
- 1:13:31Priority Aviation pays. It's my sponsorship is where I
- 1:13:35make, if I make anything. But as far as running 5th in an
- 1:13:39Xfinity race, that's it's a joke.
- 1:13:41You know, you run 5th, you get 12 grand.
- 1:13:43You know, it's something silly like that.
- 1:13:46I I think collectively it's a very difficult subject.
- 1:13:51It is could, could we sit down 30 million?
- 1:13:53I mean, yeah, we can round up $30 million.
- 1:13:57Does it make sense to round up $30 million?
- 1:13:59That's the question. It's not really about what it
- 1:14:01cost. It's about what makes business
- 1:14:03sense and sense for the future in an asset that you're going to
- 1:14:06put, you know, would you buy, would anybody out there buy a
- 1:14:11$500,000 house? If and then seven years they
- 1:14:15take it from you. Yeah.
- 1:14:17And 75 you or I mean, I know that the value of houses are
- 1:14:21dependent upon the market and all that, but you wouldn't
- 1:14:23knowingly buy a $500,000 house that you can't decide how much
- 1:14:28is it for or it costs you more to live there.
- 1:14:31And it's a flood zone. You just wouldn't do it.
- 1:14:33Yeah. You wouldn't do it, Yeah.
- 1:14:35OK, OK, so let's let's calm down for sake.
- 1:14:39Me and me and you both with with the charter.
- 1:14:44Well, here, here's what I say. I'm just simple, I'd say NASCAR
- 1:14:48says for as long as NASCAR's in, in, in, in the game, all
- 1:14:56charters are worth this. That way.
- 1:14:58If you I'm, I'm just OK, Don't nobody listen to what I'm
- 1:15:01saying. This is inside Herman's word.
- 1:15:03Inside. Herman, this is coming from.
- 1:15:05Yeah, well, this is the business one, you know, I listen.
- 1:15:10You look at Bud Moore, Junior Johnson, they quit.
- 1:15:13They had nothing. All they had was brick and
- 1:15:15mortar, old junkie old buildings that had been there for 100
- 1:15:19years. I would have liked further to be
- 1:15:23OK. If you are in NASCAR and there's
- 1:15:27only 39 spots, each one is automatically worth.
- 1:15:32Let whatever number you want. Calm down, everybody.
- 1:15:35I'm just going to say a number. Forsake 20 million.
- 1:15:38Yeah, OK, so Bud Moore, when he got old and couldn't walk
- 1:15:42anymore, and he said, listen, I can't walk anymore.
- 1:15:45My kids roughed up. Somebody want my spot?
- 1:15:48And he got $20 million. Yes, for his spot.
- 1:15:52For his spot that to me, that's all I'm looking at.
- 1:15:55So, so that's what that's what I also want to say because I mean,
- 1:15:58here's what here's I mean, I have so many thoughts.
- 1:16:00First off, NASCAR as a sport rocks.
- 1:16:05I mean, racing is, is just feeds my soul above anything else.
- 1:16:11You know, competition, just everything that we do here, like
- 1:16:15we, we've got a badass sport, right?
- 1:16:18Yeah. We love it.
- 1:16:19We love it. I mean, we can't get enough of
- 1:16:21it. The fans can't get enough of it.
- 1:16:22They're showing up each and every week that I mean, it's all
- 1:16:24great. Economics matter and they got to
- 1:16:29get the economics right. That's that's the problem.
- 1:16:31That's so your NFL and your MMLBS and all these people.
- 1:16:38And this is the problem that we have as NASCAR.
- 1:16:41We were the Junior Johnsons and the Bud Moores of the world.
- 1:16:45And we want to be who owns the Yankees or we want to be John.
- 1:16:49Well, it used to be. It used.
- 1:16:50To be John Henry of the Red Sox, right?
- 1:16:52Yeah. John Henry of the Red Sox.
- 1:16:54Yeah. But but the what it takes to get
- 1:16:58there is going to be painful for somebody.
- 1:17:01Yeah. Because you just can't flip the
- 1:17:02switch because we have too many constituents.
- 1:17:05We have tracks that have infrastructures and investment
- 1:17:08and constituents. We have race teams that have
- 1:17:10infrastructure, constituents and investment.
- 1:17:12We have NASCAR that has all of those things.
- 1:17:14We have drivers like to get somebody has to lose to get to
- 1:17:19be the John Henry of NASCAR for for us to become like other
- 1:17:24sports. And, and that's the goal.
- 1:17:28That's what Denny Hamlin's fighting for.
- 1:17:29That's what these people are fighting for.
- 1:17:31It's just that it's not going to work for all 36 teams in the
- 1:17:35sport today. Someone's going to lose.
- 1:17:39And I agree with that because, you know, Major League now this,
- 1:17:43what I'm going to say has to do with our sport.
- 1:17:45Yeah, not not everybody's equal. And I'm, I know, I know people
- 1:17:50get upset about that, but I'm sorry, you know, that's just the
- 1:17:53way it is when, when I look at Major League Baseball, our, our
- 1:17:58Cardinals, our, our eleven time world champion Cardinals,
- 1:18:02they're the second best team in all of baseball.
- 1:18:05And our value is worth way less because the city of Saint Louis
- 1:18:09is small. OK, so there's less people who
- 1:18:13pay money now. The Yankees, Chicago Dodgers,
- 1:18:18they're worth way more than us because there's way more people
- 1:18:22in their city. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:18:24Never thought of that. So we are the second greatest
- 1:18:28baseball team in history, 11 and and we're not valued very.
- 1:18:32High. Because we don't handle no
- 1:18:35people. So OK, we can go on forever, but
- 1:18:40but let's have fun with this now.
- 1:18:42And, and people don't like it anymore when I say we're coming
- 1:18:47to an end because there are people that love listening to
- 1:18:50you, Kelly. So I'm trying to train myself to
- 1:18:52say we're coming to the end. OK, my notes say this and, and
- 1:18:59this is something new. I'm I'm I'm using my notes as a
- 1:19:02as a side gig like. I I brought pen and paper in
- 1:19:05case you said something that made me want to talk about more,
- 1:19:08so I. I love it, OK?
- 1:19:10People expected Kelly and Dale to be Cup Series owners.
- 1:19:22I say that's a big burden at 50 years old it.
- 1:19:27Is. Comment on that.
- 1:19:30Yeah. I mean, again, you know, if you
- 1:19:32look at where if if you think about what it means to be a cup
- 1:19:37owner, what it means to be a cup owner today is that I need a
- 1:19:40very valuable charter to make it work.
- 1:19:44Do I put out the money for that charter today at 51 years old?
- 1:19:49And Dale's turning 50, right? I'm turning 52.
- 1:19:52He's turning 50. We're all of age.
- 1:19:53We're all. Of age, we're over 50.
- 1:19:56So, so I, I hope I, I hope I get to retire at 65.
- 1:20:02You know, I hope that I can go enjoy some life and, and Dale's
- 1:20:09like in a whole second life of his life, right, with marriage
- 1:20:12and kids and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:20:13So it's like you have this asset over here that can appreciate
- 1:20:18and provide value long term. But how hard you have to work to
- 1:20:23make the business model work? And do you want to work that
- 1:20:25hard for the next 10 or 15 years when you already worked 25
- 1:20:29years? Really hard to do what we do now
- 1:20:32and to be what we are now. We've got Dirty MO Media rocking
- 1:20:35and rolling our Xfinity team. I could run 8 to 10 cars if I if
- 1:20:39I had the facility and the ability.
- 1:20:42It's flourishing from the standpoint of being on track.
- 1:20:46Dale, Dale's doing TV. Dale's, you know, Dale's doing a
- 1:20:49lot of great things. So there's a lot of great stuff
- 1:20:52going on, you know, Yeah, we want to be Cup owners.
- 1:20:55It just has to make sense. And anyway, there's a lot of
- 1:20:58variables for it to make sense. Here's what I'm going to be a
- 1:21:02fan and pretend you're not listening to me right now.
- 1:21:05I'm at a bar, man. I'll tell you what Tim Earnhardt
- 1:21:08saw to do one of those like Hendrick.
- 1:21:10All to say, we're going to give you Kelly 5 million a year.
- 1:21:14We're going to give Junior 5 million a year to let us use the
- 1:21:17Earnhardt name. And they're each going to make
- 1:21:2010 appearances a year. But if I was in Earnhardt's, I
- 1:21:23wouldn't be involved in any business transaction because
- 1:21:27because then they'd have to work so hard.
- 1:21:30What's that sound like? I mean, we already work hard.
- 1:21:34It works really hard. 5 million's not enough.
- 1:21:38For each review, I mean, no, I mean, you know, I guess I mean
- 1:21:43that would be easy. We've, we've talked to
- 1:21:45investors, we, we could get the money.
- 1:21:47Like I say, it's not about that. It's about we could get the
- 1:21:51money all day long. Do we?
- 1:21:54Do we, I mean, we are the kind of people that that want to be
- 1:22:00responsible for our own success. We have skin in the game.
- 1:22:05People ask me, oh, so how often do you go to work?
- 1:22:09I go to work every single day. My day starts at 6:00 AM, my
- 1:22:15first cup of coffee. I'm in this office at 8:30.
- 1:22:18I leave this office at 5:00 every day except when I'm
- 1:22:21traveling with Wyatt. That's the kind of people we are
- 1:22:25that I mean, we just want to control our business.
- 1:22:27We want to influence our business.
- 1:22:28I want to be here for my people. I want my people to know me.
- 1:22:31I want to know they know who they work for.
- 1:22:34And that's just how we operate. You know, that's just, you know,
- 1:22:37I got a e-mail, funny story, just because you were, you were
- 1:22:40pretending to be a race fan. I got an e-mail yesterday that
- 1:22:45said I don't have to read this and I don't have to respond, but
- 1:22:48this was their idea. Their idea was to go in business
- 1:22:51with Marcus Smith. He owns X many tracks.
- 1:22:54They gave me the whole schedule of the tracks that we could go
- 1:22:56run. And everybody should just leave
- 1:22:59NASCAR and go do that like they did with IndyCar.
- 1:23:02Yeah, well. Everybody's got an opinion.
- 1:23:05And you know what, you and I know history.
- 1:23:07The last time that all the Cup guys boycotted, you know, that
- 1:23:12was very messy at Talladega. They took the Xfinity Series,
- 1:23:16made them run the Cup Series and yeah, well, we, we both want
- 1:23:20good and I got to tell. There's no good in that for
- 1:23:22anybody. No, everybody loses in a
- 1:23:24situation like that. Yeah, and I, I remember Chip
- 1:23:27Ganassi roughing your brother up saying come on, Dale, you need
- 1:23:31to be a cup owner. It's like 8 months ago.
- 1:23:33Yeah. And I'm like, man, why would you
- 1:23:34want to be a cup owner when everything's all good but OK?
- 1:23:40This is truly the fun end. You chewed my ass out.
- 1:23:45I texted you one time. I said hey, Kelly, Kelly, and
- 1:23:51you said there's an E in there. KELLEYI just thought that was
- 1:23:58funny. Yeah, I usually have to, you
- 1:24:02know, you know, what's hilarious is like, especially when I
- 1:24:05e-mail people and they write me back and spell my name wrong.
- 1:24:08My my name's at the bottom of the e-mail and my name's in the
- 1:24:11e-mail address. That really irritates me, but
- 1:24:14I've had to spell it. Did you know, let me leave you
- 1:24:16with the fun fact, because Dale just found this out.
- 1:24:19I AM Kell. EY.
- 1:24:21My middle name is King. My dad named me Kelly King.
- 1:24:26My grandmother Earnhardt was Martha King.
- 1:24:29My dad wanted to name me Kelly because he bought all of his
- 1:24:33race parts from Kelly Auto Parts, whose family was Winston
- 1:24:39Kelly, The Winston Kelly in our sport.
- 1:24:43Winston's dad on the auto parts store in Kannapolis where my dad
- 1:24:47went in his at 20 to go buy these race parts.
- 1:24:50And he loved the name Kelly. And my mom wanted to name me
- 1:24:53Jacqueline. Jack, Jack Well or Jack Ellen?
- 1:24:58Like with the Q, Jacqueline or Sharon, I'm not a Sharon or a
- 1:25:02Jacqueline. Jacqueline's I like the name
- 1:25:05Jacqueline but. You're you're well and they
- 1:25:10couldn't figure out anything to go with Kelly and they finally
- 1:25:12my dad's like Kelly King, Kelly King, Kelly King.
- 1:25:15And so I was just telling Dale that the other day, nobody he
- 1:25:17didn't know I was named after Winston Kelly's family for
- 1:25:20thought and part stores. So that's where that spelling
- 1:25:22came from. So we can blame it on them.
- 1:25:24And and and and we're going to keep leaving.
- 1:25:26We're we're we're we're keep ending.
- 1:25:28And and then when I went to I flew to Charlotte yesterday and
- 1:25:31was on the last hub and and and I saw Winston.
- 1:25:35I saw Winston Kelly, you know, with MRN and and runs the Hall
- 1:25:39of Fame Kelly. It really is amazing how many
- 1:25:42people we just look at we go, they working, but they really
- 1:25:45are this is NASCAR is their life.
- 1:25:49You I I just learned something. You know.
- 1:25:51From you about Winston Kelly. A.
- 1:25:54A A really, if I could sum up NASCAR, I would say NASCAR
- 1:25:59equals passion, Period. Every single person that touches
- 1:26:04this sport is passionate about it.
- 1:26:06Yeah. And that's what drives it.
- 1:26:08That's what drives all your decisions in life is passion.
- 1:26:11Yeah, we're all very passionate about it.
- 1:26:13Well, two things. First of all, I love you.
- 1:26:16I love you. If I could hug through there, I
- 1:26:19would hug you. Listen, everybody, you just
- 1:26:22listen to the great Kelly Earnhardt Miller, and you can
- 1:26:26listen to this in podcast form, and it's a long one.
- 1:26:29So you're going to be able to listen to her from home on the
- 1:26:32way to work, then back home, then on your way back to work.
- 1:26:36This was a good one. And you can find us in iTunes
- 1:26:39and Spotify. Kelly, thank you so much.
- 1:26:43I want to get in the top five at least.
- 1:26:45OK, Kenny Podcast. You can't my goal, I tell
- 1:26:50Charlie, I said Charlie, I said when we get to 100,000
- 1:26:53subscribers, I'm quitting. OK.
- 1:26:57I want the silver trophy. That's all it's about.
- 1:27:00You want to quit when you're on the top right?
- 1:27:02But yeah, it's been a ton of fun, tons of fun.
- 1:27:05You know, I love you. I love all your commentary.
- 1:27:08You're one of the most fun people to follow on social media
- 1:27:11and listen to. And you just tell it like it is
- 1:27:13and and and I love it. No, we're all the same.
- 1:27:15I just, I don't, I don't do anything in NASCAR anymore.
- 1:27:19So I just all right, everybody, until next time.
- 1:27:22We'll see you later.
