- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball
- 0:02Speaker 1: Coaches Show. Double header coming up on Saturday. Huskies are
- 0:05Speaker 1: at Butler and that's in the afternoon, and then the
- 0:09Speaker 1: USC visits the Yukon women at the Excel Center seven thirty.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Star Juju Watkins, the heck of a player comes to
- 0:16Speaker 1: the Garden that plays not the Garden head to the
- 0:19Speaker 1: Excel Center. They met the Huskies. The Lady Huskies met
- 0:23Speaker 1: her last year in the NCAA Tournament. Great game there too.
- 0:26Speaker 1: So that's the double hitter weekend coming up at Butler
- 0:29Speaker 1: with the men and then USC at the Excel Center
- 0:32Speaker 1: seven thirty. Dan Hurley Back with us. Dan, you talked
- 0:35Speaker 1: about this and the season began. How much growth you
- 0:38Speaker 1: wanted to see out of your guys who were going
- 0:40Speaker 1: to be sophomores Jalen Stewart and Jaden Ross and solo ball.
- 0:46Speaker 1: How do you rate where they are right now? You're
- 0:48Speaker 1: eleven games in. Each has had some moments, and I
- 0:52Speaker 1: wonder you must feel somewhat pleased the way these guys
- 0:55Speaker 1: are developing. This is what you're looking for, isn't it.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I think these guys are where we thought they'd be.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I think, you know, I don't know, you know, but
- 1:07Speaker 2: I'm not ready for mid mid year grades yet for anyone.
- 1:11Speaker 2: But I do think, you know, Solo has given us
- 1:14Speaker 2: a level of production, uh from the perimeter with with
- 1:18Speaker 2: his you know, with his three point shooting. Obviously it
- 1:22Speaker 2: creates even when he's not making them, to create space, uh,
- 1:26Speaker 2: space for the other four offensive players to play in.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Because in scouting report, uh, you know, he's earned that
- 1:32Speaker 2: type of respect from a from opponents and you could see,
- 1:37Speaker 2: you know, he's he's garnering a lot of attention and
- 1:40Speaker 2: you know he's gonna he's gonna learn and grow. And
- 1:42Speaker 2: I thought Gonzaga did a really good job on him,
- 1:45Speaker 2: you know, Plus he was in foul trouble, so he's
- 1:47Speaker 2: gonna have to, you know, make some adjustments because we, uh,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, we need his His thirteen fourteen sixteen a
- 1:53Speaker 2: game is huge for us. I think, you know, Jalen
- 1:58Speaker 2: Stewart has had a couple of really impressive offensive showings
- 2:02Speaker 2: here and uh, obviously you know, his growth uh is
- 2:06Speaker 2: critical to the team. We want that guy playing you know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: his minutes uh, you know, around twenty or more. We
- 2:13Speaker 2: want him in the twenties with his minutes, he's such
- 2:16Speaker 2: a versatile piece and uh, you know, his ten huge
- 2:19Speaker 2: points and and he made some great plays in that game,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and you know, he's showing that he's capable, and I
- 2:25Speaker 2: think he's growing up. He's got a different look to him.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I think, uh, you know, it's really going to happen
- 2:30Speaker 2: for him as a as an explosive player off the
- 2:34Speaker 2: bench that is going to be more consistent. And then
- 2:38Speaker 2: and then Jade Ross, you saw how he could, you know,
- 2:41Speaker 2: carve out this role. I think the threes for him,
- 2:44Speaker 2: I think, uh, you know, once he starts making those
- 2:46Speaker 2: threes consistently, it's going to take him to another level
- 2:50Speaker 2: with his confidence and it's going to earn him more
- 2:53Speaker 2: core time. But you could see, I think as we're
- 2:56Speaker 2: as we're dying to try to find a defensive stopper,
- 2:59Speaker 2: somebody that could shut down somebody on the perimeter and
- 3:02Speaker 2: the other team that that is a tough matchup. He
- 3:05Speaker 2: showed an ability to do that, you know, throughout this
- 3:08Speaker 2: early part of the year. And then he had a
- 3:10Speaker 2: huge momentum steal and bucket there and transition that was
- 3:14Speaker 2: a huge play. You know. But I think for those three.
- 3:18Speaker 2: We knew that they would behind. They would be behind
- 3:21Speaker 2: a lot of these teams that have much older players,
- 3:24Speaker 2: fourth year transfers, fifth year transfers. These guys are so
- 3:28Speaker 2: young compared to the players they're competing against Eckenzaga, Verusxavier,
- 3:33Speaker 2: you know, coming up this week where they're the third
- 3:35Speaker 2: oldest team in the country. So yeah, I mean, I
- 3:38Speaker 2: think we're learning some hard lessons. These guys are going
- 3:42Speaker 2: through a learning curve and getting valuable experience that is
- 3:47Speaker 2: as December turns to January and so forth. They've got
- 3:52Speaker 2: a lot of upside that that group of three where
- 3:56Speaker 2: the level that they could give us terms of their talent,
- 4:00Speaker 2: their athleticism, their ability, their size on the wing. I
- 4:05Speaker 2: think we just keep investing in them. I think the
- 4:09Speaker 2: payout could be really big for us. Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 1: In credit to you and the staff too, for keeping
- 4:15Speaker 1: these guys moving forward. In the world we live in
- 4:18Speaker 1: where everyone has one foot out the door when it
- 4:20Speaker 1: doesn't go exactly the way they want it, You've been
- 4:23Speaker 1: able to keep these guys, you know, moving forward, improving
- 4:26Speaker 1: and now helping the team and then hopefully you know,
- 4:29Speaker 1: like as you say, January February, March, you know, the
- 4:32Speaker 1: upside is there. I mean that is in and of itself.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Today coaching in college has got to be one of
- 4:38Speaker 1: the more difficult things to do.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah. And we didn't beg them. I mean I didn't
- 4:41Speaker 2: beg them to stay here. You know, the coaches didn't
- 4:44Speaker 2: have to beg them. They love being here, They love
- 4:46Speaker 2: playing at Yukon. They love playing, you know, in this
- 4:51Speaker 2: particular organization because of the culture that we have and
- 4:57Speaker 2: the relationships that we have between everyone in the organization,
- 5:02Speaker 2: and uh, and they see the success that the players
- 5:07Speaker 2: that stay and just get better. They see the success
- 5:11Speaker 2: that that players have had in our program, not just
- 5:14Speaker 2: winning championships, but all around the globe playing at the
- 5:18Speaker 2: highest levels of basketball and having great success, whether it's R. J.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Cole or Isaiah Whaley through to you know, guys that
- 5:26Speaker 2: are lottery picks and starring in the n b A.
- 5:29Speaker 2: You know, the people that are part of what we do.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You know, we are you know, we're loyal and and
- 5:36Speaker 2: uh and we believe in each other and and uh,
- 5:40Speaker 2: you know we we we we let them know that
- 5:42Speaker 2: we valued them throughout the year last year, uh, and
- 5:44Speaker 2: that we wanted them to stay. But there was no
- 5:47Speaker 2: uh twisting of arms. Uh. These guys want to be
- 5:50Speaker 2: at Yukon and and uh uh they believe in themselves.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Yeah. And you know what's interesting, it's motivating I think
- 5:57Speaker 1: to everybody on the roster when when guys do well.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I noticed it with Isaiah Abraham and a mode no
- 6:02Speaker 1: weel when they're when their teammates are succeeding and making
- 6:06Speaker 1: splash plays of the garden. They were up and fired up,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know for their teammates, which you know, to me
- 6:12Speaker 1: is a good sign, right, It's a sign of how
- 6:15Speaker 1: how closely knit this bunch of guys are.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you know, I you know what helps
- 6:23Speaker 2: us is the evidence that we have. It gets us credibility,
- 6:28Speaker 2: you know, and having evidence of doing a great job
- 6:31Speaker 2: for your players, you know, having evidence of doing a
- 6:35Speaker 2: great job, you know, for your team, and that you're
- 6:37Speaker 2: going to bring a lot of value to their careers.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And and the feeling of being part of a team
- 6:44Speaker 2: that really cares, you know, the part uh you know
- 6:47Speaker 2: that's crushed when they lose and uh and celebrates each
- 6:52Speaker 2: other when they win. I think that you know, that's
- 6:55Speaker 2: what makes UH a team a great thing to be
- 6:58Speaker 2: a part of. You know, well, you really hurt together
- 7:02Speaker 2: when you don't accomplish your mission. Uh, and then everyone
- 7:06Speaker 2: enjoys celebrating just success when we win. And when you're
- 7:10Speaker 2: on a team like that, uh, you know, you you
- 7:13Speaker 2: you're very connected. And when you're not on a team
- 7:16Speaker 2: like that, it's a it's a it's a it's it's
- 7:19Speaker 2: a bad feeling. It's a it's an empty feeling. And
- 7:22Speaker 2: playing basketball at Yukon, or coaching basketball at Yukon is
- 7:26Speaker 2: is uh. You know, it's the opposite experience of that.
- 7:29Speaker 2: It's uh, you know, it's what's fun about being part
- 7:32Speaker 2: of a team. You know, you're actually a part of something,
- 7:36Speaker 2: you know, bigger than yourself.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that that is well said. I got to tell
- 7:40Speaker 1: you that is one of the beauties of covering this
- 7:42Speaker 1: team and your team's really over the last several years
- 7:45Speaker 1: at Yukon. Dan Hurley with us. We're back with a
- 7:47Speaker 1: little Big East preview. We'll find out what's going on
- 7:49Speaker 1: around the conference, talk a little bit about Xavier as
- 7:52Speaker 1: we continue here on lear Field
