Transcript
- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17For Advent 2025 we are in a series called Brought to the
- 0:21Light, Advent for all who need it.
- 0:23This series is looking at the themes of Advent and how Jesus
- 0:26comes to us all. You can find more information
- 0:29about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:33Thanks for listening. Second scripture reading tonight
- 0:42comes from Paul's letter to the Corinthians.
- 0:45His 2nd letter to the Corinthians beginning in chapter
- 0:521 verse 2, Paul writes, May God our Father and the Lord Jesus
- 1:00Christ give you grace and peace. All praise to God the Father of
- 1:08our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and
- 1:12the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our
- 1:18troubles so that we can comfort others.
- 1:22When they are troubled. We will be able to give them the
- 1:25same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for
- 1:30Christ, the more God will shower us with His comfort through
- 1:34Christ. Even when we are weighed down
- 1:37with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation.
- 1:41For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly
- 1:44comfort you. Then you can patiently endure
- 1:48the same things we suffer. We are confident that as you
- 1:52share in our sufferings, we will.
- 1:55You will also share in the comfort God gives us.
- 2:00We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the
- 2:02trouble we went through in the province of Asia.
- 2:05We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure.
- 2:10We thought we would never live through it.
- 2:14In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped
- 2:20relying on ourselves and learn to rely only on God who raises
- 2:25the dead. And He did rescue us from mortal
- 2:29danger, and He will rescue us again.
- 2:33We have placed our confidence in Him and He will continue to
- 2:36rescue us. And You are helping us by
- 2:39praying for us. Then many people will give
- 2:42thanks because God has graciously answered so many
- 2:46prayers for our safety. I mentioned earlier that it's
- 2:56amazing how much can change in a single year.
- 3:02On this Sunday a year ago, my third son looked a little rough
- 3:08after church told him I thought he needed to go take a nap, and
- 3:14by that night he had started vomiting.
- 3:17And when that vomiting hadn't gotten better by Monday night,
- 3:21we called the pediatrician. They said there's a bug going
- 3:25around and we should just keep hydrating him.
- 3:29Well, Tuesday morning, Christmas Eve, I woke up to Meg saying
- 3:35Josiah needs to go to the hospital and within half an hour
- 3:40I was carrying him into the pediatric emergency room at
- 3:45virtual hospital. Weak and disoriented him, not
- 3:49me, and he was quickly diagnosed with being in keto diabetic
- 3:57ketoacidosis, and after they stabilized him, we were
- 4:01transferred by ambulance to the ICU at Children's Hospital of
- 4:06Philadelphia. He woke up Christmas morning in
- 4:09the PICU and to spend a few minutes together as a family, we
- 4:15had to gather around his hospital bed.
- 4:18He spent the rest of that week in the hospitals.
- 4:21We learned how to deal with how to live with type 1 diabetes,
- 4:28which in a world where some parents have a story that's
- 4:33turned out much differently. I don't want to make that
- 4:36experience a bigger thing than it was.
- 4:40But I'd be lying if I said those were easy days, or if I said
- 4:48that this year hasn't been one of the most difficult our family
- 4:53has gone through. There's there's a heaviness that
- 5:00has hung over these days. There's an anxiety that my body
- 5:05carries even though my head knows that this year isn't the
- 5:10same as last year. These experiences that we have,
- 5:15they, they contribute to the conflicting feelings that we
- 5:19might feel during the holiday season.
- 5:22Some of the familiar traditions that have brought us joy become
- 5:28reminders of what we've lost. There are empty places at our
- 5:34table and in our hearts. The season that was once full of
- 5:40joy is now something tainted with sorrow.
- 5:44And it's into the midst of the brokenness and sorrow of this
- 5:49world that God entered into the human experience, right?
- 5:55Taking on all that it means to be human, including our grief,
- 6:00our losses, our sorrow, so that He could redeem it.
- 6:04He came into it. He took it on so he could redeem
- 6:08it. And into the midst of our griefs
- 6:13and our losses, that God speaks words of comfort that He draws
- 6:19near to those who are broken hearted.
- 6:23Jesus said one of the the primary aims of his earthly
- 6:28ministry was to to bind up those who are broken hearted.
- 6:33And that might be some of us here tonight.
- 6:40The passage that I read just a few moments ago from Second
- 6:44Corinthians chapter 1. It's a passage that sometimes
- 6:48misused to tell people that we shouldn't be sad in the midst of
- 6:54life's sufferings, life's difficulties, because God will
- 7:00use it to comfort you so that you can comfort other people
- 7:05down the road. I think that's wrong.
- 7:12Well, maybe wrong's a little too strong, but I think it misses
- 7:17the point that Paul is trying to make here.
- 7:21Yes, it's, it's true that God will use the, the, the comfort
- 7:27that we've received to share that comfort with other people.
- 7:31But I think the bigger point that Paul is making here is that
- 7:35God is the God of all comfort, that he is the source of the
- 7:42comfort we need and the comfort we receive.
- 7:47I don't think Paul is saying that God only comforts us so
- 7:52that we can comfort others, although that's a beautiful
- 7:56effect of receiving the comfort of God.
- 7:58But but when we use the good that God could bring out of a
- 8:04difficult situation or or a painful situation to jump over
- 8:10the sorrow that we're experiencing, the pain that we
- 8:14feel, the grief that we're going through, when we try to jump
- 8:20over that rather than walking through it with God, we actually
- 8:26miss the comfort that God wants us to experience and receive
- 8:31ourselves right. God wants to meet us in the
- 8:37midst of the difficult things of life and in the negative
- 8:42emotions that come along with them.
- 8:47And He wants to meet us there so that He can comfort us in those
- 8:52things, so He can heal the wounds that they've created, so
- 8:57He can show us His fatherly love.
- 9:02And there are things that that God wants to teach us and refine
- 9:07in US and shape in US and transform in US through the
- 9:11process of walking with him through the midst of that pain
- 9:17we might not be able to learn or receive at any other point in
- 9:22our lives. God's goal is to raise us up to
- 9:27maturity, right, to form the image of Jesus in US.
- 9:32And we don't want to just spiritually bypass that just so
- 9:37we can avoid the painful and difficult emotions of life,
- 9:44those emotions that that we or or maybe those around us might
- 9:49find uncomfortable. Now, will God use our experience
- 9:54of receiving comfort to help someone in the future?
- 9:56Absolutely, I believe that. But I think first and foremost,
- 10:01God comforts us because we're hurting.
- 10:07He comforts us because he loves us.
- 10:12Now, the other part of this whole conversation is that there
- 10:14are different kinds of suffering that we go through in life,
- 10:18different kinds of suffering we experience as we travel this
- 10:22journey. And here Paul, in First or
- 10:25Second Corinthians, Paul is talking specifically about
- 10:30suffering for Christ, right? He's facing persecution for
- 10:34sharing the faith. And did you hear what he's
- 10:38saying in in verses 8 and following, he says that they'd
- 10:41seen trouble, they'd felt crushed, they were overwhelmed,
- 10:47they didn't think they'd make it.
- 10:48They expected to die because they were sharing their faith.
- 10:59Now, even though the circumstances might look
- 11:03different for us who are here tonight, right safe and warm
- 11:09within a beautiful building that's been dedicated to
- 11:12Christian worship. We're not worried about anyone
- 11:16busting down the doors and arresting us, putting us on
- 11:19trial or to death for our faith. But it doesn't mean that what we
- 11:27feel in response to the circumstances of life is all
- 11:33that different from what Paul and his companions experienced.
- 11:39I don't know about you, but there have been days and weeks
- 11:43this year when I have felt crushed, when I have felt
- 11:50overwhelmed, when I didn't know how we'd ever get through the
- 11:55difficulty to some kind of new normal.
- 12:01Even as I was thinking about this message, I could feel the
- 12:05tension rising in my shoulders. I, I could feel the anxiety in
- 12:12my chest reflecting on all that happened last Christmas and over
- 12:17the past year, and I was grateful for that.
- 12:24I was grateful because it helped me recognize that I've been
- 12:28carrying this in a different way as we've been approaching
- 12:32Christmas than I realized. It's allowed me to name those
- 12:38feelings and, and point to the source, which has helped me
- 12:41bring those things to God again. And that's, that's part of the
- 12:52cycle, right? That's, that's part of what we
- 12:56do when we feel that grief rising up again, We offer it
- 13:00back to God again. We offer that loved one back to
- 13:04God. We offer that situation back to
- 13:06God again. Because God is faithful.
- 13:13He's carried us through this year in ways I never could have
- 13:18imagined. He's met us in the midst of the
- 13:23dark emotions of pain and grief, as we've grieved the simplicity
- 13:28of what life used to be as well as what life now is for us and
- 13:36our 13 year old son. He's met us in the tears and the
- 13:43sleepless nights and the highs and lows of Type 1, and He's
- 13:51comforted us with His presence. And tonight, if you're in a
- 14:01place of pain or sorrow, I believe Jesus wants to meet you
- 14:07there too. I believe He wants to to bring
- 14:12comfort in the midst of whatever it is you're going through
- 14:18because He loves you, not primarily so you can comfort
- 14:23other people, although you may someday.
- 14:27I believe Jesus wants to grow your confidence and faith in Him
- 14:32and His promises that He will never leave you nor forsake you.
- 14:37You can trust that's true even when it doesn't feel true in the
- 14:41moment. You can learn to rely on him, or
- 14:46learning again to rely on him, even in what may not yet feel
- 14:53like a new normal. And there are times we need each
- 14:59other, right? We need the Church to remind us
- 15:04of what is real and what is true, to hold on to faith and to
- 15:09hold on to us when we don't have the strength to hold on
- 15:14ourselves. There's nothing wrong with
- 15:18admitting that. In fact, it's it's often only
- 15:23when we do get to the point of admitting that, that people can
- 15:27come around us in love and prayer to help us, to remind us,
- 15:35to comfort us with the comfort they have received.
- 15:42So wherever you are tonight, Jesus is there and he wants you
- 15:51to know that he's there with you because he is the source of all
- 16:00comfort, all peace, all hope. Would you pray with me?
- 16:14Oh, Jesus, we thank you that you come to us even in the midst of
- 16:21the difficulties of life. Maybe, Jesus, we're grateful
- 16:24because especially you come to us in the midst of the
- 16:28difficulties of life, in those unexpected situations, or in
- 16:35those moments when the grief we thought had kind of subsided
- 16:42washes over us again like a wave.
- 16:48God, we thank you that you don't leave us there to drown in the
- 16:57midst of our own sorrow and grief.
- 17:02You come to us. You.
- 17:05You actually never left us. And so this Christmas season,
- 17:17when everything around us tells us to be happy and bright and
- 17:22merry and joyful, would you help us?
- 17:31Would you help us to be honest with ourselves and honest with
- 17:35you to admit that we feel overwhelmed, to admit that we
- 17:45can't do it on our own, and to reach out to those around us who
- 17:51can hold on to us and our faith even when it feels like too
- 17:58much? Thank you for meeting us here
- 18:06tonight. Thank you for speaking to us.
- 18:13Thank you for walking through the midst of the difficulty of
- 18:19life with us as one who knows our sorrows and is acquainted
- 18:26with our grief. And Jesus, we do look to that
- 18:35day when you come again, and you come to wipe every tear from
- 18:42every eye on that day when there will be no more sorrow or
- 18:47sadness or death. We long for that day, Jesus, but
- 18:58until it comes, we choose to place our hope in you because
- 19:06you are the God of all comfort. We pray this Jesus in your name.
