- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyon's episode number two and fifty three,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and we are here today for another episode of our
- 0:22Speaker 1: Rut radio mini series, in which we're chatting with hunters
- 0:25Speaker 1: all across the country to get the latest on what's
- 0:28Speaker 1: happening in the white tailed world, progress of the rut,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and the tactics that are working right now. Welcome to
- 0:49Speaker 1: the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I am your host, spent
- 0:51Speaker 1: to New North and this week we are without our
- 0:53Speaker 1: fearless leader, Mark Kenyon. Mark and I just couldn't put
- 0:57Speaker 1: it together this week forward getting on a call. Uh,
- 1:00Speaker 1: just with the holidays and as I am traveling and
- 1:03Speaker 1: he's been traveling. Um, it just didn't work out. So
- 1:07Speaker 1: I am going to take you guys through the intro solo. Ordinarily,
- 1:12Speaker 1: one thing that Mark would ask me in the intro
- 1:14Speaker 1: is if there are any themes from this week's episode.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I would say this week that theme would be that
- 1:21Speaker 1: we are coming back to food sources. If the RUT
- 1:24Speaker 1: is a bell curve, then we are now on the
- 1:26Speaker 1: other side. For most of the country, we're on the
- 1:29Speaker 1: other side of the top of that bell curve. So
- 1:32Speaker 1: the buck movement is going to be on the way down.
- 1:35Speaker 1: But with that, you're still gonna have bucks that are
- 1:38Speaker 1: very interested in doughs, and where the doughs want to
- 1:41Speaker 1: be right now is going to be on that food
- 1:45Speaker 1: in the evenings. So this is really exciting if you
- 1:47Speaker 1: were someone who has a quality food source, or if
- 1:50Speaker 1: you are a hunter prefers sitting field edges. Uh, those
- 1:54Speaker 1: evenings on field edges are going to be really good
- 1:57Speaker 1: right now and probably for this next week or so
- 2:00Speaker 1: as we get into December. Something else from this week's
- 2:03Speaker 1: Seat of Callers is that you hear a few people
- 2:05Speaker 1: talk about calling right now using some rattling, grunting, etcetera. Uh.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Most folks don't think of like November and think of
- 2:14Speaker 1: using some different calling strategies, But that could be a
- 2:17Speaker 1: good technique for getting a buck to show himself. Whether
- 2:20Speaker 1: you're gun hunting or bow hunting, looking to close the
- 2:23Speaker 1: distance on a specific deer or just get one to
- 2:26Speaker 1: step out of the timber. That is something that you
- 2:29Speaker 1: could be doing even as the best running is behind us. Now,
- 2:33Speaker 1: if Mark was here, he would also compliment me and
- 2:36Speaker 1: be fawning over the two deer that I just killed. Um.
- 2:39Speaker 1: If you go to Instagram and check out a few
- 2:42Speaker 1: of my latest posts, you'll see the buck that I
- 2:44Speaker 1: just killed in South Dakota on Saturday and then the
- 2:47Speaker 1: buck that I just killed in Kentucky on Wednesday. So
- 2:50Speaker 1: if you head over there to at Spencer new Hearth
- 2:53Speaker 1: on Instagram, you'll see why Mark was so jealous and
- 2:56Speaker 1: why he did not want to join me on the
- 2:58Speaker 1: podcast this week. If Mark were here, he would also
- 3:02Speaker 1: be complimenting me on this week's sleight of guests and
- 3:05Speaker 1: how great of a job I did covering the entire country.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So for this week on the podcast, we have Todd
- 3:10Speaker 1: Pregnant's from White knucle Productions in Iowa, and then in
- 3:13Speaker 1: Virginia from Aero Addicts TV is Erran Lee, and then
- 3:17Speaker 1: we talked to Scott Spitzley in Michigan from Dirt Nap Gear,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and then from Louisiana. Bow Hunter in Louisiana is Kyler Moppert.
- 3:24Speaker 1: One more thing Mark would want me to tell you
- 3:26Speaker 1: guys about is the meat Eater dot Com. If you
- 3:29Speaker 1: haven't been there, lately. Go check it out. It looks
- 3:31Speaker 1: a little different than it did about a month ago
- 3:33Speaker 1: or so. Um specifically, there's now a lot of great
- 3:37Speaker 1: white tail content on there, written by myself, Mark and
- 3:41Speaker 1: Pat Durkin. So if you are looking for some new
- 3:44Speaker 1: reading material, the meat Eater dot com is now a
- 3:47Speaker 1: great resource for that kind of thing, even for white
- 3:49Speaker 1: tail hunters. That's enough for me, though, let's go to
- 3:52Speaker 1: our first color. I have to say, I think this
- 3:54Speaker 1: has maybe been the best intro that radio has ever had,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and uh, I'd have more proxy, and so I'm going
- 4:01Speaker 1: to agree for him. Before we go to our first report, though,
- 4:05Speaker 1: let's pause for a word from our sponsors at white
- 4:07Speaker 1: Tail Properties. This week, with white Tail Properties, we are
- 4:11Speaker 1: joined by Tony Hanson, a land specialist out of Michigan,
- 4:14Speaker 1: and Tony is gonna be telling us about how hunting
- 4:16Speaker 1: strategy changes in pressured states like Michigan. I'd say the
- 4:21Speaker 1: biggest difference is that just the availability the number of
- 4:25Speaker 1: older deer is much much lower, so you don't have,
- 4:30Speaker 1: you know, a bunch of them to pick from. So
- 4:33Speaker 1: you've got to be pretty cure that you do have
- 4:36Speaker 1: to hunt. And you know me, it's It's all about
- 4:39Speaker 1: trying to manage the growing that I've got so that
- 4:42Speaker 1: I do have that age structure because it's it's probably
- 4:44Speaker 1: not going to be there on the neighbors. If you'd
- 4:47Speaker 1: like to learn more and to see the properties that
- 4:49Speaker 1: Tony currently has listed for sale, visit white Tail properties
- 4:53Speaker 1: dot com. Backslash Hanson that's h A N S E N.
- 4:59Speaker 1: All right and joining us. The line first is Todd
- 5:01Speaker 1: Primants from White Knuckle Productions in Iowa, not Todd in Iowa.
- 5:05Speaker 1: What would you say the buck activities been lately on
- 5:07Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten, one to ten, probably
- 5:10Speaker 1: about a five to a six. A lot of it
- 5:12Speaker 1: really depends on hot dose this time year. I think
- 5:15Speaker 1: a lot of times we get caught into this generalization
- 5:18Speaker 1: about the rut, but the fact of the matter is
- 5:20Speaker 1: when it dough comes in the heat, it really does
- 5:22Speaker 1: change everything in that area. Um. And from around here
- 5:25Speaker 1: we have a we do have an older age class
- 5:28Speaker 1: of deer that are kind of like the dominant deer
- 5:30Speaker 1: that usually this time year, if there's a doll that hot,
- 5:33Speaker 1: they will shall be with a mature deer. UM. Not always,
- 5:37Speaker 1: but oftentimes this is the time here where I guess
- 5:40Speaker 1: the bigger, more dominant animals kind of succeed. But this
- 5:44Speaker 1: is actually my favorite time of year to catch bucks
- 5:46Speaker 1: because not only is the ruts still going on, so
- 5:50Speaker 1: they still got that vulnerability, so to speak, but they're
- 5:53Speaker 1: also starving at that so a lot more starts transferring
- 5:57Speaker 1: back to food, which actually makes it easier to hunt
- 5:59Speaker 1: these big bucks. So is food something you'll focus on
- 6:02Speaker 1: in the morning as well? This time of year, I
- 6:05Speaker 1: kind of start ease and back from morning sets. Um.
- 6:08Speaker 1: If I am going to be hunting mornings, I will
- 6:10Speaker 1: only go into spots that I really believe are right
- 6:13Speaker 1: next to their bedding area. Um. I'm just not a
- 6:15Speaker 1: huge fan of hunting food in the mornings. I think
- 6:19Speaker 1: most of the time we're hunting specific spots based on
- 6:22Speaker 1: the wind. So like let's just say, for example, you're
- 6:24Speaker 1: waiting for that cold front or that northwest wind to
- 6:27Speaker 1: come in, so when you finally get it, I kind
- 6:29Speaker 1: of would rather put all my eggs in one basket
- 6:32Speaker 1: and try one good evening set on the food as
- 6:35Speaker 1: opposed to trying to go in in the morning. Um,
- 6:37Speaker 1: because I think a lot of times you do more
- 6:39Speaker 1: damage than good, particularly this time of year where they're
- 6:41Speaker 1: just not up traveling as much during daylight. So what
- 6:45Speaker 1: kind of food sources do you prefer to focus on
- 6:47Speaker 1: this sabby year. Well, we are fortunate here and I
- 6:51Speaker 1: We've got lots of beans and corn and agriculture just
- 6:54Speaker 1: kind of everywhere, So there's a lot of good food
- 6:57Speaker 1: supply there. If you have standing corner beans the since
- 7:00Speaker 1: the time here, they'll really start hitting it for that
- 7:02Speaker 1: higher protein count. And just last week I hunted a
- 7:07Speaker 1: spot that had a bunch of saving beans, and literally
- 7:10Speaker 1: it had been almost dead the entire rut, but we
- 7:13Speaker 1: got a little bit of snow, about two inches of snow,
- 7:15Speaker 1: and it changed everything. Like within twenty four hours, pretty
- 7:19Speaker 1: much every deer in the neighborhood was hitting that standing
- 7:22Speaker 1: bean plot. And I think a lot of it just
- 7:24Speaker 1: comes with the cold because they have to produce so
- 7:26Speaker 1: much more energy to stay warm. Uh, they go to
- 7:29Speaker 1: the highest benefit beneficial food sources, which are beans and corn.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It fills them up, makes them feel warm, and has
- 7:37Speaker 1: lots of protein. Uh, just basically allows them to produce
- 7:39Speaker 1: more heat. Um. However, green food sources can still be
- 7:44Speaker 1: really good too. I'll be hunting tomorrow night. I'm actually
- 7:46Speaker 1: planning on going hunting green food source, but it's gonna
- 7:50Speaker 1: be a little bit a little bit warmer conditions about
- 7:52Speaker 1: fifty degrees. So I actually kind of like hunting my
- 7:56Speaker 1: green plots when it's a little bit more mild, and
- 7:58Speaker 1: then as soon as the cold, cold, whole weather comes,
- 8:00Speaker 1: hunt starts coming in. That's when I really like to
- 8:03Speaker 1: focus on the beans and corn. But the big thing is,
- 8:05Speaker 1: you know, no matter what time of year it is,
- 8:07Speaker 1: you've got to have fresh areas to move into the hunt. Um.
- 8:11Speaker 1: You can't keep pounding and pounding and pounding the same spot.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So UM, I kind of like to use the holidays
- 8:17Speaker 1: to spend some time with my family, whether it's Thanksgiving
- 8:20Speaker 1: or Christmas. Kind of let some of your areas die
- 8:22Speaker 1: down a little bit, give them a break, and then
- 8:24Speaker 1: kind of playing your next hunts based on the weather
- 8:26Speaker 1: and the front. But then that that next series of
- 8:29Speaker 1: hunts right after Thanksgiving can be absolutely fantastic. This window
- 8:34Speaker 1: of the rut then where you can still find some
- 8:36Speaker 1: mature bucks that just have one thing on their mind
- 8:38Speaker 1: and they're harassing those doves in the food. How long
- 8:41Speaker 1: do you think that last I've had really good rock
- 8:45Speaker 1: hunts all the way through. Um. The end of November
- 8:49Speaker 1: usually usually a brown December one is when they pretty
- 8:53Speaker 1: much most of the doughs have been bred. There will
- 8:56Speaker 1: still be one or two that will come in here
- 8:57Speaker 1: and there, but you just won't find the bucks out
- 8:59Speaker 1: track link. But all the way through. I mean, just
- 9:02Speaker 1: for example, last year, I went out and filmed on
- 9:05Speaker 1: a green food plot after Thanksgiving and ended up seeing
- 9:09Speaker 1: one of the biggest bucks in our whole territory. And
- 9:11Speaker 1: he was out in broad daylight feeding but it was
- 9:14Speaker 1: an area that hadn't been hunted hard um, and so
- 9:16Speaker 1: he had kind of been left alone there, so he
- 9:18Speaker 1: had no reason to not be outfeeding during daylight. But
- 9:21Speaker 1: through the any time in November is really good, and
- 9:23Speaker 1: I've had some excellent late season rott hunts, and even
- 9:26Speaker 1: just this last week, some of our team members in
- 9:28Speaker 1: Illinois and different places have been out and seeing tons
- 9:31Speaker 1: of actions. UM. Because I think something about this rot
- 9:35Speaker 1: was weird because it was so brutally cold in early
- 9:39Speaker 1: November when it usually is pretty mild. It seemed like
- 9:43Speaker 1: the brought was really suppressed. So I don't know if
- 9:46Speaker 1: biologically if the dose just didn't come to heat or
- 9:49Speaker 1: if it delayed the coming to heat or we just
- 9:52Speaker 1: didn't see the movement because of the cold. But this
- 9:54Speaker 1: could be an interesting light rot. I'm kind of curious myself.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna be hunting hard in the next week as
- 9:58Speaker 1: we have some fronts and snow things coming in. Um,
- 10:01Speaker 1: but dude, if it's November, there is always a chance
- 10:04Speaker 1: of catching a buck with a hot dog and it
- 10:06Speaker 1: could be a monster and boy, they just they have
- 10:09Speaker 1: no choice but to follow that hot door where she goes.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Now that we're on the other side of maybe like
- 10:14Speaker 1: peak running, is there any calling or decoin strategies that
- 10:18Speaker 1: you'll use here at the end of November. Oh absolutely,
- 10:22Speaker 1: I'm I'm always calling throughout the year. I'll just kind
- 10:25Speaker 1: of raise and lower my aggression levels accordingly. But I'm
- 10:29Speaker 1: a big fan of single grounds throughout the season, and
- 10:33Speaker 1: like this time of year. Like, as an example, if
- 10:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna go sit out on a food plot or
- 10:38Speaker 1: an area in your food you know, if there's no
- 10:40Speaker 1: deer around, I will not hesitate to put a single
- 10:43Speaker 1: loud grunt out there. But every thirty minutes giver take
- 10:46Speaker 1: and then as you get closer to prime time, I'll use.
- 10:49Speaker 1: We have a tree trash or call I developed which
- 10:52Speaker 1: attracts all dear, but it doesn't spook everything like rattling. UM.
- 10:56Speaker 1: So I'll throw out a thrash session here and there
- 10:58Speaker 1: just to see if I can peak the interest of
- 10:59Speaker 1: the deer or a buck that's laying nearby, um, if
- 11:02Speaker 1: they're not out moving, just to try to get them
- 11:04Speaker 1: up a little bit early, to get them out on
- 11:06Speaker 1: the field or out in the open early. UM. But
- 11:08Speaker 1: rattling this time of year, I'm just not a big fan. Now.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Some guys love it, some guys love decoin and doing
- 11:14Speaker 1: all those things. But for me, hunting this area year
- 11:18Speaker 1: after year, chasing the same dear year after year, I found, UM,
- 11:22Speaker 1: that type of aggressive, aggressive calling is is it does
- 11:25Speaker 1: a little bit more damage than good. In my opinion,
- 11:27Speaker 1: it can work, but I think if you're hunting the
- 11:29Speaker 1: same dear, you don't want to necessarily completely educate them
- 11:32Speaker 1: in the process because there's always you know, next week
- 11:35Speaker 1: or next hunt or next year. So I kind of
- 11:38Speaker 1: like to go a little bit more subtle. But I
- 11:40Speaker 1: absolutely call all the way through the season. Uh. And
- 11:42Speaker 1: deer are just generally so generally attracted to that social
- 11:47Speaker 1: sound of a grunt gear making noise, rubbing and antlers
- 11:52Speaker 1: thrashing trees and all those things send a calming message
- 11:56Speaker 1: that hey, it's safe over here, and you basically create
- 11:59Speaker 1: the next destination they want to come to going forward.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Then this s next week or so. What do you
- 12:03Speaker 1: think that bucket activity is going to be on a
- 12:05Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in Iowa? I'm gonna say
- 12:08Speaker 1: a seven coming up, because we've got a major cold
- 12:12Speaker 1: front coming with some big time snow, and I think
- 12:14Speaker 1: most of the Midwest is gonna get hit, or at
- 12:16Speaker 1: least the upper Midwest where they're looking at. We have
- 12:18Speaker 1: eight inches predicted and for us, dude, that's a lot
- 12:21Speaker 1: of snow. So that's gonna push a ton of deer
- 12:24Speaker 1: onto the plots. Now, whether it's a real running activity
- 12:26Speaker 1: or not, mostly they'll be out there to feed and
- 12:29Speaker 1: they'll be checking every other dough that's out there. All right,
- 12:32Speaker 1: Todd Will, congrats on that great buck you just killed.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Good luck with the rest of your season, and thanks
- 12:36Speaker 1: for joining me. Hey, thank you very much, and good
- 12:39Speaker 1: luck to everybody out there hunting. Be safe and enjoy
- 12:42Speaker 1: the holidays. Happy. Thanks for giving everybody alright and joining
- 12:45Speaker 1: us on the line. Next is Aeron Lee from Aero
- 12:47Speaker 1: Addicts TV in Virginia. Now, Aaron in Virginia, what would
- 12:51Speaker 1: you say the bucket activity has been lately? A skill
- 12:53Speaker 1: of one to ten one ten probably be about six
- 12:56Speaker 1: or seven. It's gonna start to slow down, uh, stay
- 13:00Speaker 1: of the bucks are starting to catch on to the
- 13:01Speaker 1: dogs running around, all the clubs running dolls around. But
- 13:05Speaker 1: other than that, buck activity has been pretty good for
- 13:08Speaker 1: the still hunters. That's what we do. We still hunt. Um.
- 13:13Speaker 1: A lot of books have been kind of moving around
- 13:15Speaker 1: more at night times, in the morning times or afternoons,
- 13:17Speaker 1: but we have we do still have some activity. Um,
- 13:22Speaker 1: some you know, decent bucks in the afternoon. So I
- 13:24Speaker 1: will give you about six or seven and what phase
- 13:26Speaker 1: of it? What would you say the deer in in
- 13:28Speaker 1: Virginia right now we are I would say probably towards
- 13:33Speaker 1: the end post runts. Um. They were rutting real good
- 13:39Speaker 1: a week or two ago, and I have notice activity,
- 13:42Speaker 1: you know, rutting kind of gone down the past week. Um.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I haven't seen as many doors running around or many
- 13:50Speaker 1: bucks chasing. I have seen you, but it's not as
- 13:53Speaker 1: you know, as hot as it was two weeks ago,
- 13:57Speaker 1: so giving those factors that were maybe on the other
- 13:59Speaker 1: side of the huts. And there are a lot of
- 14:02Speaker 1: dogs in the wood from from hunt clubs. Where are
- 14:05Speaker 1: you focusing on to find some mature bucks on their feet? Um? Well,
- 14:11Speaker 1: right now as we speak on certain as deep as
- 14:15Speaker 1: you can on the property that was leasing. Um, I
- 14:18Speaker 1: gotta swamp. It's stick, it's not down here, but there's
- 14:23Speaker 1: a few openings. Um, we're basically planning on cassing big bucks,
- 14:28Speaker 1: kind of slipping out of the native properties. Um that
- 14:32Speaker 1: they wanted dogs and stuff like that, trying to get
- 14:35Speaker 1: big bucks slipping um the tickets and afternoons kind of
- 14:40Speaker 1: going towards the bean field. We've got a bean filled
- 14:42Speaker 1: right up the road from us, actually right outside of
- 14:45Speaker 1: the right on the woodline for where we hun at um,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and we're kind of just seems to come out there
- 14:52Speaker 1: and eat the beans, the beans around beans pretty much
- 14:55Speaker 1: all we got as the fruit source where we're hunting
- 14:57Speaker 1: at right now. Do you notice the change in bedding
- 15:00Speaker 1: this time of year when the woods get a little
- 15:02Speaker 1: bit chaotic. Yeah, they'll um if they could find a
- 15:07Speaker 1: short Most short time tickets tend to be a good uh,
- 15:13Speaker 1: betting ground for bucks, and those are pretty much anything
- 15:17Speaker 1: around this time of year, or a little this small
- 15:20Speaker 1: little thicket they've just got enough from curl up then
- 15:22Speaker 1: anything real sick. I think um that they fill a
- 15:26Speaker 1: lot of protection with. There's pretty good pat and grounds
- 15:29Speaker 1: right now. How about the signmaking. Are you still seeing
- 15:32Speaker 1: any fresh rubs or scrapes in the woods. Actually, I
- 15:35Speaker 1: saw a fresh rub walking into the path, but all
- 15:39Speaker 1: the other ones are from earlier this year. I have
- 15:42Speaker 1: seen a couple of scrapes um with some like fresh
- 15:46Speaker 1: buck tracks in it. I guess you come back and
- 15:49Speaker 1: checked one, um, but nothing nothing too fresh other than
- 15:54Speaker 1: that other buck blow lessow earlier this this morning. And
- 15:58Speaker 1: where are you using your trail cameras is time of
- 16:00Speaker 1: year they focused on some specific trails or food sources
- 16:04Speaker 1: or what are you doing? We got I got a
- 16:07Speaker 1: trail camera right in the corner of this bean field
- 16:10Speaker 1: where we knows a good Uh. It's a hot travel
- 16:13Speaker 1: path of deer use UM comes right out of the corner,
- 16:17Speaker 1: right through the bean field, and it's pretty much a
- 16:19Speaker 1: path that was cut through a thicket. UM, So we've
- 16:23Speaker 1: placed the trail camera there. We got a couple of
- 16:25Speaker 1: trail cameras throughout the woods, just around the tree stands
- 16:29Speaker 1: and um, big bottoms. You know where we think hot
- 16:35Speaker 1: travel is um coming out of betting areas. We've got
- 16:39Speaker 1: a couple of trail cameras where we think they're betting
- 16:42Speaker 1: at UM. That's pretty much it for the trail cameras
- 16:46Speaker 1: going forward. Then in the next week or so, what
- 16:48Speaker 1: do you think that bucket activity is going to be
- 16:50Speaker 1: on a scale of one to tend in Virginia for
- 16:52Speaker 1: this area southeastern Virginia, buck activity probably about a seven
- 16:57Speaker 1: or eight. They're still on their feet, they do looking
- 17:00Speaker 1: for a nice mature buck. You're not gonna find one
- 17:03Speaker 1: every single hunt. They are on their feet if you
- 17:06Speaker 1: give it the time and you put some effort in,
- 17:08Speaker 1: and I know the season is kind of coming not
- 17:10Speaker 1: towards an end. But dogs, the dogs, the shotgun seaton
- 17:13Speaker 1: just started, but we only got about another month some
- 17:15Speaker 1: change left. But if you give us some time and
- 17:18Speaker 1: you give us some patience, you'll you'll definitely get a
- 17:20Speaker 1: nice buck. Even though it's hard with the betting area
- 17:23Speaker 1: and dogs running around. The big bucks are trying to
- 17:27Speaker 1: find a place, you know, just to kind of hang
- 17:28Speaker 1: out at not moving around too much. With the rep
- 17:31Speaker 1: coming coming towards an end. Um, I still definitely think
- 17:35Speaker 1: you have a good chance of get in piecent book
- 17:37Speaker 1: if you put the time, you know determination into it.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Are Darren, good luck with your hunt that you're currently on.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me new problem alright and joining us
- 17:48Speaker 1: on the line. Next is Scott Spitzley for the Dirt
- 17:50Speaker 1: Nap Gear in Michigan. Scott in Michigan, what would you
- 17:53Speaker 1: say the bucket activities been lately on a scale of
- 17:55Speaker 1: one to ten? You know, I'd probably give it a
- 17:59Speaker 1: roll of seven. Now through my observation and lack of
- 18:03Speaker 1: sign I've been seeing, I think we've been pretty much
- 18:06Speaker 1: well past the peak of their up for a little
- 18:08Speaker 1: bit now. However, I have had some good friends of mine,
- 18:12Speaker 1: uh put some great bucks down was in the last
- 18:14Speaker 1: couple of days. I think they're finally getting out of
- 18:17Speaker 1: that lockdown phase and looking for that next hot dough.
- 18:21Speaker 1: One of them actually shot their buck after we chase
- 18:24Speaker 1: a dough right under his tree. So when Michigan the
- 18:27Speaker 1: gun season has been going on for about a week now,
- 18:30Speaker 1: I believe what is your strategy for finding bucks that
- 18:33Speaker 1: are maybe avoiding those gun hunters, you know, I try
- 18:37Speaker 1: to set up close to dough bedding, UM nearer in
- 18:41Speaker 1: a travel corridor on the down wind side. UM. If
- 18:45Speaker 1: putting in the time in I think you could have
- 18:47Speaker 1: a chance at a mature buck cruising through there looking
- 18:49Speaker 1: for another hot dough. And if you do, and if
- 18:53Speaker 1: you are near doe bedding and you do happen to
- 18:56Speaker 1: catch one still lockdown, that could put you in the
- 18:58Speaker 1: game as well, you know, depending on where the doe goes.
- 19:00Speaker 1: So this time of year, the end of November, do
- 19:03Speaker 1: you have a preference for morning or evening sits. I
- 19:07Speaker 1: tend to focus more on evening sits just in my experience.
- 19:12Speaker 1: The mornings just not a lots going on. UM. I
- 19:16Speaker 1: wouldn't necessarily favor the evenings. Um, if you're in the
- 19:19Speaker 1: right spot, you can you can catch them in sure
- 19:21Speaker 1: buck on his feet in the morning. So don't get
- 19:23Speaker 1: me wrong, UM, but if you're the type of funner
- 19:26Speaker 1: that hunts over food, I would definitely favor the evening.
- 19:29Speaker 1: You know, on a big cold front day with some
- 19:31Speaker 1: perfect weather conditions. So what food sources specifically are you
- 19:36Speaker 1: looking for right now in Michigan? UM? Where I hunt,
- 19:41Speaker 1: I don't really have much availability to food sources. UM,
- 19:47Speaker 1: so I'll hunt a travel cord or leading into the food. UM.
- 19:52Speaker 1: But if someone did have that, I mean that access,
- 19:55Speaker 1: I would definitely say to sit up your food because
- 20:00Speaker 1: they're not going to be betting far from it, and
- 20:03Speaker 1: they're gonna you know, try to get that that winter,
- 20:08Speaker 1: you know, get built up for the winter. So you
- 20:11Speaker 1: mentioned before that you know, if the right weather comes along,
- 20:15Speaker 1: what is the weather that you're looking for this time
- 20:18Speaker 1: of year. I'm typically looking for a huge cold front day.
- 20:23Speaker 1: You know. Actually yesterday I ended up sitting most of
- 20:26Speaker 1: the day. The pressure peaked up to about thirty point six. Um.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Just high pressure days, cold, little wind um, sunny days.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I mean, just anything that you feel that gets the
- 20:42Speaker 1: deer on their feet in your area. Uh, that's that
- 20:45Speaker 1: would be the right time to sit up on it.
- 20:48Speaker 1: How about with calling a deco and those strategies that
- 20:50Speaker 1: you'll use in late November. UM. I do typically like
- 20:54Speaker 1: the rattle a little bit. You never know, if a
- 20:57Speaker 1: buck you know, just got done with the dough in
- 20:59Speaker 1: the area. Uh, if he hears two bucks fighting, it
- 21:02Speaker 1: might pique his interest a little bit. You know, get
- 21:05Speaker 1: close enough to come check it out. So, um, I don't.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I don't try to blind call much. I haven't had
- 21:13Speaker 1: good luck with it. If I do have a buck
- 21:15Speaker 1: out of range, I'll try calling or grunting to it, um,
- 21:20Speaker 1: but I don't go to to overboard with the calling
- 21:24Speaker 1: going forward. Then, in the sixt week or so, what
- 21:26Speaker 1: do you think that bucket a TV is going to
- 21:27Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to tend in Michigan.
- 21:30Speaker 1: You know, I'd probably give it about a five within
- 21:33Speaker 1: the next week, you know. I hate not to feel optimistic,
- 21:36Speaker 1: but I think within the next week or so their
- 21:40Speaker 1: focus is going to be on the greens again, you know,
- 21:43Speaker 1: before her hard winter hits, which can hurt the guys
- 21:46Speaker 1: that don't have access to that. Excuse me. I can
- 21:50Speaker 1: imagine the mature bucks not moving too far during daylight
- 21:54Speaker 1: and betting fairly close to food, and that can all
- 21:57Speaker 1: depend on the deer hurt as well. You know there
- 22:00Speaker 1: are still hot dolls in the area. All right, Scott, Well,
- 22:03Speaker 1: good luck with what's left of your season. Thanks for
- 22:05Speaker 1: joining me. I appreciate the sponsor alright and joining us
- 22:08Speaker 1: on the line. Next is Kyler Mompert from Louisiana bow
- 22:11Speaker 1: Hunter in Louisiana, now Kyler in Louisiana, what would you
- 22:14Speaker 1: say the buck activity has been lately on a scale
- 22:17Speaker 1: of one to ten. Block activity for US so far
- 22:20Speaker 1: this year has been so far this week has probably
- 22:23Speaker 1: been about a seven. Um. We've got some parts of
- 22:25Speaker 1: the state that is uh kind of falling into that
- 22:28Speaker 1: pre rut time frame, especially in the northern part area
- 22:32Speaker 1: to northwest and also the northeast parts of the state
- 22:36Speaker 1: are are definitely in pre rut. Um. I think it's
- 22:40Speaker 1: gonna get pretty hot and heavy here in the next
- 22:42Speaker 1: two or three weeks. So, so you're part of the
- 22:45Speaker 1: state specifically, what stage of they wrote, would you say
- 22:47Speaker 1: you're in there? Uh, We're We're still very early for
- 22:51Speaker 1: us here. Um. I'm an area six outside of Baton
- 22:54Speaker 1: Rouge and we're just starting to see a couple of
- 22:58Speaker 1: scrapes and rubs nothing um, nothing too aggressive, and not
- 23:01Speaker 1: a whole lot of daytime activity right now. Our rutt
- 23:05Speaker 1: is really around Christmas to at the beginning of the
- 23:08Speaker 1: new year, and sometimes going as as late as uh
- 23:11Speaker 1: end of January early February. So your setups, what are
- 23:16Speaker 1: you focusing on then? Right now? Are you doing some
- 23:18Speaker 1: mornings as well as evenings. Are you looking at food sources,
- 23:21Speaker 1: water bedding? Uh? What is your strategy this time of year? Yeah?
- 23:26Speaker 1: For for right now, what I'm focusing on. Number one,
- 23:29Speaker 1: any anytime I can get out in the woods is
- 23:31Speaker 1: a is a good time to hunt, So I'll hunt
- 23:33Speaker 1: morn again. E of then I'm mainly focusing on on
- 23:36Speaker 1: pitch points and travel routes. Um. You know, some of
- 23:39Speaker 1: our acorn trees, some of our oak trees have dropped out,
- 23:42Speaker 1: but a lot of the white oaks are still dropping.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Red oaks still have a lot on them, so that's
- 23:47Speaker 1: always great for an afternoon hunt to get on a
- 23:49Speaker 1: red oak flat and uh make sure you're playing the
- 23:53Speaker 1: right wind. Um. I killed a few bucks last year
- 23:56Speaker 1: on on on some oak flats that uh that produced
- 24:00Speaker 1: ellen in the you could say the mid to late
- 24:03Speaker 1: winter and get some good activity in the evenings. You
- 24:08Speaker 1: mentioned signmaking a little bit before. Um, what is your
- 24:11Speaker 1: strategy around signmaking right now? Are you just running cameras
- 24:13Speaker 1: on there or is that part of your hunting as well? Um,
- 24:19Speaker 1: you know this time of year, I'm running cameras. Uh.
- 24:22Speaker 1: When I find a scrape, I'll try and hang a
- 24:24Speaker 1: camera high and angle it down and just see what's
- 24:26Speaker 1: hitting it, because you know, this is the time of
- 24:29Speaker 1: year where you start getting bucks you've never seen before. UM.
- 24:32Speaker 1: So every once in a while I'll hang a camera
- 24:35Speaker 1: over a scrape and check it just sequence in the
- 24:37Speaker 1: area and then depending on which standard is trying and
- 24:40Speaker 1: hunt a little downwind of it, um, try and catch
- 24:43Speaker 1: something coming in and checking it before dark. Um. But uh,
- 24:47Speaker 1: you know, I had a few new bucks show up
- 24:49Speaker 1: this week. UM, some of them are it's kind of
- 24:52Speaker 1: confirming to me that I don't want to hunt the
- 24:54Speaker 1: area because I don't have anything substantial checking. Um. But
- 24:57Speaker 1: one of the cameras, I've got a nice buck that
- 24:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna start targeting here as soon as as soon
- 25:01Speaker 1: as he starts making some daylight appearances between now in
- 25:05Speaker 1: the rut. H if you're trying to find a buck
- 25:08Speaker 1: on its feet during daylight, are there any specific weather
- 25:11Speaker 1: patterns or moon phases that get you excited about maybe
- 25:14Speaker 1: seeing some more daytime movement? Absolutely? Uh. I always trying
- 25:19Speaker 1: and hunt the back half of a rain storm, especially
- 25:23Speaker 1: if it's uh, if I'm checking the checking the weather,
- 25:26Speaker 1: if I see it's gonna stop raining raining about two
- 25:28Speaker 1: or three o'clock, UM, or sometimes even as late as
- 25:31Speaker 1: as four or five o'clock. I might go throw my
- 25:34Speaker 1: rain gear on, climb up in the rain, just to
- 25:36Speaker 1: be there next to the betting area when he decided
- 25:39Speaker 1: to stand up and start walking. You know, will you
- 25:42Speaker 1: see any kind of shift in bedding between now and
- 25:46Speaker 1: maybe peek rut hitting now? Our our our betting staves
- 25:50Speaker 1: about the same all year long. I mean, we're such
- 25:52Speaker 1: a sick, sick state to hunt anyway that. UM, I don't.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I don't generally see a whole lot of shift in bedding.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Every once in a while you'll see um bed down
- 26:01Speaker 1: under the oaks or in the oak flatts, and you'll
- 26:03Speaker 1: push them out in the morning when you go to hunt. UM.
- 26:05Speaker 1: But typically some of your thickets that you would imagine
- 26:09Speaker 1: there would be a deer staying in there, there's uh,
- 26:11Speaker 1: they're gonna be in there from the beginning of the
- 26:13Speaker 1: season until the end. You mentioned before that you think
- 26:16Speaker 1: we are even ahead of pre route right now? Does
- 26:20Speaker 1: that mean you're part of say you're still seeing some
- 26:22Speaker 1: bachelor groups. Maybe absolutely, Yeah, A couple of others are
- 26:26Speaker 1: still seeing baschlor groups because like I said, I mean
- 26:29Speaker 1: there was even um, there was a buck killed in Velvet.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I want to say at the very beginning of November,
- 26:35Speaker 1: UM up on the northern part of the state, kind
- 26:37Speaker 1: of an intention Tinsaw Parish, there was a buck killed
- 26:40Speaker 1: in killed in Velvelle on public land. And I mean,
- 26:44Speaker 1: you've got buck You've got bucks in Velvet, You've got
- 26:46Speaker 1: bucks that are still traveling together in groups of two
- 26:48Speaker 1: to five, um, you know the the rest so long
- 26:51Speaker 1: ways off, you know, going forward. Then in this next
- 26:54Speaker 1: week or so, what do you think that bucket activity
- 26:56Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one to
- 26:58Speaker 1: ten in Louisiana. So for the next week, I think
- 27:02Speaker 1: it's gonna say about the same. We're not gonna start
- 27:04Speaker 1: heating up UM for some really good hard pushes at
- 27:08Speaker 1: you know, rut movement until UM until probably the week
- 27:12Speaker 1: week or two before Christmas. So we're probably two or
- 27:14Speaker 1: three weeks out. So the next week I'm gonna leave
- 27:16Speaker 1: it at the seventh UM and uh, you know, I
- 27:19Speaker 1: would say, if you can get near some betting areas
- 27:21Speaker 1: or you know, you have a travel trail where you've
- 27:24Speaker 1: got some bucks walking and they're feeling pretty confident that
- 27:27Speaker 1: they're not going to get pushed around or be pressured,
- 27:29Speaker 1: then I would hone in on that. Alright, Kyler, good
- 27:32Speaker 1: luck with the long season head, thanks for joining me,
- 27:36Speaker 1: Thank you have a good day. And that concludes this
- 27:39Speaker 1: week's episode of Wired to Hunt's Radio. Thanks to Todd, Aaron, Scott,
