- 0:02Here's your host, Alex Garrett oh Man. Tomorrow. I got a great
- 0:08story that I found in the Newark Star Ledger about the FAA not holding it's
- 0:15pilots accountable. We'll talk about that tomorrow, but tonight, I know it's
- 0:20a day after Labor Day, but I always think on these holiday weeks it's
- 0:24Labor Day week. So my few cents on Labor Day week is that where's
- 0:32the ultimate concern for the many labor disputes going on em by some of the
- 0:41United Auto Workers and the sag AFTRA. But it seems to me this entire
- 0:49year has been about making hard workers pay, making it happen, making pay
- 1:04increases happen. Nurses, we're going on strike a cross hospitals across the Tristate
- 1:11area, I said, because of the great care of the Neon NATO unit
- 1:15pay the nurses. Finally contracts were agreed upon. But that was a strike
- 1:23and a crisis. Number one. Then you saw footage of Delta or American
- 1:30Airlines pilots fighting for more money in Grand Central. I believe they were lining
- 1:37up the steps. So that was his few two now now in one hundred
- 1:45plus days, Yeah, I said it one hundred plus days, the sag
- 1:55Aftra continues. We talked with Kenyata Sampson about the picket line and we have
- 2:01to get him on or get a rep on to discuss what's going on with
- 2:07all that, because it doesn't seem like there's any progress or leeway being made
- 2:14at all at all. I guess they'll have a fall season. I don't
- 2:20know how much of a fall season. But the idea that AI is gonna
- 2:28take over roles in Hollywood? Who would want that when we want human nature,
- 2:32creativity. So that's another labor dispute. And then you have the United
- 2:43Auto Workers, another continued disaster. And you know, I know I reference
- 2:55nine seventy a lot. But but Piscabo today, Joe Piscobot talk about why
- 3:05didn't the Biden administration step in to any of these things and resolve it so
- 3:12that strikes could be resolved. And it just feels like an unprecedented labor day.
- 3:24That's what I'm coming to the microwave to microwave microphone to tell you.
- 3:30It seems like an unprecedent labor day because of the disputes going on. And
- 3:38let me tell you, during these negotiations or lack of please. Even when
- 3:47these strikes and strike threats hit the local bus drivers and the local subway people
- 3:55and local MTA conductors and workers, don't get frustrated at the hard working people.
- 4:05Get frustrated with the union bosses that can tend to be really you know,
- 4:12I had to say, greedy, but greedy. But don't get pissed
- 4:16off at the union worker just trying to make a living for his or own
- 4:21or her own family. Pay dues by the way, pay dues by the
- 4:26way. And then not only that, not only that, still put up
- 4:34with the consumer bs on top of it all every day at work. I
- 4:43meant to tell you this, but if you're riding the Long Island Railroad,
- 4:46do not get frustrated with the people that are taking your ticket. If you
- 4:51didn't read the fair increase correctly, or you didn't read the train schedule increase
- 4:56correctly, that's on the you. That's not on And if you have a
- 5:00problem with the raised fairs, don't blame it on the hard working ticket collector
- 5:06that's just trying to make it his or whole her own living. Take it
- 5:10up with management. They made the decision, not the hard worker just trying
- 5:16to make the daily runs, even in the trucking world, right, Zach
- 5:20Miller, don't put it on the blue collar worker. And then my other
- 5:32thought about whether we should support unionization or if it's too communistic, socialististic,
- 5:43whatever you wanna call it. Unions have a purpose here in America. Unions
- 5:53when run properly, like Teamsters Local two thirty seven with Greg Floyd, make
- 5:58a difference. I'm to attach to you a link of a conversation I ad
- 6:02with Greg about how he made a difference with Governor Katy Hokel on NIGHTSHA.
- 6:10There are leaders that are union leaders that are not boss tweet to the world,
- 6:14but are regular, hardworking on the ground presidents of these teamster unions,
- 6:23of unions that get it, that get what the workers going through, but
- 6:27also know how to navigate with the employer. David Kohne I think about this
- 6:39because I think of that Yank geography where he talked about navigating the players strike
- 6:44in nineteen ninety four, trying get the best deal but being diplomatic. So
- 6:54no labor unions. The idea of a union is not communistic, it's not
- 7:00socialistic, unfortunately, But because those that work in these unions those that are
- 7:06in these unions are hard workers actually contributing through a capitalistic society. Let me
- 7:13say it again because I think I was good the first time, and I
- 7:18might post this all of us will be because here's my point. Hardworking union
- 7:26members contribute to the capitalistic society that say no to unionizations that try and step
- 7:40farm unionization prospects. Right, Jeff Bezos. Right, you don't like when
- 7:49your Amazon warehouse starts unionizing because it makes you look terrible. Also, it
- 7:57makes you accountable, And at the end of the day, isn't that what
- 8:03labor unions do and are supposed to do is hold the employer accountable for proper
- 8:13working conditions. For the hard working men and woman that want to make a
- 8:18paycheck, that want to make a living, bring a paycheck home. They
- 8:26contribute to the capitalistic society by working hard. So you should embrace them,
- 8:33not shut them down when they're saying, hey, conditions need to change.
- 8:41Those billionaire executives that are so upset, oh my god, sales pitches are
- 8:46being missed with the late night talk show hosts. Well, you know what,
- 8:52you know what, that writer making the talk show host is actually helping
- 8:58you make money. So maybe you shouldn't think of it as an evil thing
- 9:05to negotiate and work with sag Aftra because, by the way, when you
- 9:11shut down their production by not negotiating, you also shut down your revenue stream
- 9:22based on the actual streaming, because hey, you don't have a product to
- 9:24sell. So in multiple ways, you're screwing yourselves over billionaire Hollywood exects.
- 9:35When you don't negotiate with sag Aftra, how are you screwing yourself? Well,
- 9:41because you're not getting the money that these hard working writers help you make.
- 9:52The brilliant starts on the ground level. And of course Stephen Goldbert is
- 9:58a brilliant He started his career as a writer. He is a writer.
- 10:03But he and Fallon and Kimmel and uh Seth Meyers all have writers. And
- 10:13guess what, you get to sell that brand of Stephen Colbert, You get
- 10:16to sell that brand of Seth Meyer. You got to sell that brand of
- 10:20Jimmy Kimmel because of that writer in the back room making his jokes even funnier
- 10:26than just the delivery. So in my eyes, it was a peaceful labor
- 10:37day in a sense, kind of relaxed. But I couldn't help. But
- 10:43think how many disputes have we had, how many disputes have we had in
- 10:50this year alone? And where's the intervention, blue collar Biden? Where's the
- 10:58intervention for the hard working writers? I agree with Joe Piscomball on that.
- 11:05Blue collar Joe Biden, you should be in a position where you can help
- 11:11make a deal for the union auto workers who've been striking for a long time
- 11:16now. Instead of trashing your opponent or possible twenty twenty four opponent in Pennsylvania,
- 11:28you could be there saying, hey, I'm gonna work with you to
- 11:31make a deal happen. You're the president of the damn United States. Can't
- 11:35you make a deal possible? You're the damn president of the United States.
- 11:41And instead of using that stumb speech to bash your opponent, they wanted to
- 11:48hear, I'm sure, hey, union guys, we get you. We
- 11:52know you were were the blue dog Democrats, right, that's they call themselves.
- 12:01We get you, we support you, so we're gonna help you make
- 12:05a deal. But no, it was all about bashing Trump. What a
- 12:11missed opportunity. And then and then, for those that are union leaders,
- 12:35playing hardball is not always the easiest thing to do. Fighting for the worker
- 12:41is not always the easiest thing to do. But you know when I lose
- 12:46respect for you when you tell your union members vote a certain way, or
- 12:54you can't be part of a union, or we're gonna make it more difficult
- 12:58for you. Maybe raise the dudes step farming into voting the way we want
- 13:03you to. That's a corrupt union leader. That's not how you get it
- 13:11done. If you want to truly fight for the worker, don't stiff farm
- 13:18them into something they're not comfortable doing. They're paying you dues for God's sakes,
- 13:26they're paying to be part of your union. Don't uh. This enfranchised
- 13:33them just because they made think differently. And the one other stigma about unions
- 13:50I feel is out there is the corruption. And the corruption does not have
- 14:03the consumer, the unionized worker and the employer that hires that worker, and
- 14:15that the worker strikes against corruption doesn't help anything. And weeding it out might
- 14:28be a good thing also, But if you want to do it right,
- 14:35you negotiate well. And we have to end these disputes for the good of
- 14:46the worker, for the good of the economy, and the good of the
- 14:50consumer. And I'm very surprised that on Labor Day no one really talked about
- 15:03how the many disputes there has been albeit something have been resolved, but can't
- 15:13we just have a cordial, cordial respect and realize that the unionized worker,
- 15:31or that the worker in general, builds into the capitalist economy and is not
- 15:39communist for wanting to to unionize for fair workers rights. Because at the end
- 15:56of day, all the strike does, it's hurt everybody. All the dispute
- 16:00does is hurt the whole thing. It stops progress from moving forward. And
- 16:04this progressive administration, these progressive politicians, have you seen one of them say
- 16:15let's end this freaking sag after strike? No, I haven't have you.
- 16:23There's your problem right there. Someone needs to step in and mediate to end
- 16:33of the remaining disputes and maybe put egos aside and power aside and realize that
- 16:42this Labor Day twenty twenty three, this Labor Day twenty twenty three, a
- 16:52unionized worker is good for the employer because it means he'll be here, she'll
- 17:07be happier maybe, And it's good for the economy because that unized worker will
- 17:15be inspired to put back and pay and that hard work will go back into
- 17:22paying into that capitalistic system, which for Walster is the end of the is
- 17:29the is the end goal, right, keep the capitalism going. Well,
- 17:34unionized worker does that best, I feel, so let's not crap on them
- 17:41anymore then that average consumer who doesn't know the life of that worker just trying
- 17:52to make a day's living. Let's be the better person and end these disputes
- 18:00this Labor Day Week, twenty twenty three. Have a great day.
