The Season with Peter Schrager: Buccaneers GM Jason Licht · NFL explained.

• 0:07
Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
• 0:09
Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
• 0:24
Speaker 1: another episode of the Season with Peter Scheger. I am
• 0:29
Speaker 1: Peter Schrager. I am joined by my producer and friend
• 0:32
Speaker 1: Aaron wang Kaufman, and also Jason English from the iHeartMedia team.
• 0:38
Speaker 2: What forty eight hours for New York Football? I got
• 0:43
Speaker 2: to start in New York as we go to the
• 0:45
Speaker 2: Sunday Night experience to the Monday night experience and do
• 0:48
Speaker 2: a quick snippet on just the total polar opposites of
• 0:52
Speaker 2: how you can feel after a loss Jets Sunday Night, Aaron,
• 0:58
Speaker 2: They're down seventeen to nothing. They start with this ridiculous
• 1:02
Speaker 2: safety and then they get a field goal of seventeen
• 1:04
Speaker 2: to five, and then all of a sudden it starts
• 1:06
Speaker 2: clicking and Zach Wilson begins out playing Mahomes. I joked
• 1:10
Speaker 2: on on Monday mornings Good Morning Football that I thought,
• 1:14
Speaker 2: you know, did Mahomes.
• 1:15
Speaker 1: Go out the night before? Like, was Mahomes the one
• 1:18
Speaker 1: out with Taylor Swift till three in the morning at
• 1:20
Speaker 1: zero bond? Because all of a sudden, Mahomes is throwing
• 1:22
Speaker 1: ducks and he's getting intercepted, and if mostly picks that
• 1:25
Speaker 1: one off doesn't drop it, who knows what else can happen.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: And Zach Wilson starts looking like not only a competent quarterback,
• 1:32
Speaker 1: a good quarterback. The first drive in the third quarter
• 1:36
Speaker 1: of that Jets Chiefs game, Zack Wilson gets the ball
• 1:39
Speaker 1: and takes it right down the field. Therews a couple beautiful,
• 1:43
Speaker 1: beautiful passes, a beautiful touch up pass to Almazard, and
• 1:46
Speaker 1: then on the two point conversion, looks like Brett Favre
• 1:48
Speaker 1: running around with his head cut off and gets the
• 1:50
Speaker 1: two point coversion games everything he can to get in there.
• 1:53
Speaker 1: Yes there was the fumble, and yes they lost, but
• 1:56
Speaker 1: after the game, Mahomes pulls in Zach Wilson is like,
• 1:59
Speaker 1: you got it, Like it was like the coolest moment
• 2:01
Speaker 1: if you're Zach Wilson, and if you put yourself in
• 2:05
Speaker 1: Zach Wilson's use for just a second. For the last
• 2:08
Speaker 1: two years, all you read about, all you see is
• 2:11
  Speaker 1: that you suck, You're awful, you're a bust, you don't
• 2:15
Speaker 1: have it. The season's over, You're a punching bag, and
• 2:19
Speaker 1: I'm as guilty of this as anyone in the media.
• 2:22
Speaker 1: Like you just you take something that's it's almost like
• 2:25
Speaker 1: this like rotting carcass and then like you feel the
• 2:28
Speaker 1: need to like kick it one more time, and that's
• 2:30
Speaker 1: what we do in the media, and that's what it is.
• 2:32
Speaker 1: But it was based on the fact that he couldn't
• 2:35
Speaker 1: play well and he couldn't do it well. Then suddenly
• 2:37
Speaker 1: you have this performance on Sunday night and it's a loss,
• 2:41
Speaker 1: and the Jets are one in three and the season
• 2:42
Speaker 1: is likely not going anywhere. But you wake up Monday
• 2:45
Speaker 1: morning as a jetspan and you feel good. You know,
• 2:48
Speaker 1: we've had Hanka's area on the time on the show
• 2:50
Speaker 1: countless times, and Hank tells you, like, you know, you
• 2:53
Speaker 1: feel like you just you don't deserve nice things. Well, yes,
• 2:56
Speaker 1: they lost, but you gotta feel nice things. When Zach
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Wilson has this moment of hope, this glimmer of positivity
• 3:03
Speaker 1: and if there isn't that controversial holding call and so
• 3:05
Speaker 1: it's Gardner who knows, maybe Zach Wilson has an opportunity
• 3:08
Speaker 1: to go seventy yards and they win that game and
• 3:11
Speaker 1: it's even better, but at the very least Zach Wilson
• 3:15
Speaker 1: doesn't have another good game in his career. At least
• 3:17
Speaker 1: we saw that this is what the Jets saw in
• 3:19
Speaker 1: him and what they saw in practice, and there's some
• 3:23
Speaker 1: chants of positivity from Zach Wilson. Meanwhile, less than twenty
• 3:28
Speaker 1: four hours later, the Giants game starts, and they've got
• 3:31
Speaker 1: a quarterback who makes forty million dollars a year, who
• 3:36
Speaker 1: goes out there and throws one of the most inexplicable
• 3:39
Speaker 1: pick sixes to Devin Weatherspoon to put the game away.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: Also was sacked eleven times behind an offensive line that yes,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: is down there left tackle, but has plenty of talent
• 3:47
Speaker 1: that they have brought in in the draft and free agency.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: I don't know where Darren Waller is in this offense.
• 3:53
Speaker 1: I don't know where Paris Campbell has been. You know,
• 3:57
Speaker 1: Wandale Robinson's wide open deep. Daniel Jones doesn't see him.
• 4:00
Speaker 1: Sterling Shepherd makes good money. I don't see him on
• 4:03
Speaker 1: the field. I don't know what Darius Slayton's been up to.
• 4:06
Speaker 1: The Giants, big ticket quarterback, first round pick they doubled
• 4:10
Speaker 1: down on, and now in hindsight, I'm looking at it
• 4:14
Speaker 1: and it's like the Giants didn't weren't dying to pay
• 4:17
Speaker 1: Daniel Jones. They did not pick up his fit year option.
• 4:21
Speaker 1: He then has this incredible season where they win all
• 4:24
Speaker 1: those games by one scorer less, the coaches Coach of
• 4:26
Speaker 1: the Year, and yet they weren't rushing to pay him.
• 4:28
Speaker 1: It went to the very bitter end. He fired his
• 4:31
Speaker 1: agents with a week left in the negotiating process. Daniel
• 4:34
Speaker 1: Jones was represented by CAA his entire career. He fires CAAA,
• 4:37
Speaker 1: hires athletes first. They take it to the absolute wire
• 4:41
Speaker 1: and like in the final minutes before free agency starts,
• 4:45
Speaker 1: Daniel Jones signs this crazy not crazy crazy is relatively speaking,
• 4:51
Speaker 1: but a big, big contract to be the Giants quarterback.
• 4:55
Speaker 1: And now if you look at it, all you know
• 4:57
Speaker 1: in the rear view, and it's eight months later, it's like,
• 5:01
Speaker 1: what was the alternatives? Like they did? Could they have
• 5:04
Speaker 1: rolled the days? Do they end up with Will Levis
• 5:05
Speaker 1: as their quarterback? Do they say let's just go with
• 5:08
Speaker 1: Tyrod this year? There weren't many alternatives, but they did
• 5:10
Speaker 1: pay him that big money. Now they're on the hook
• 5:11
Speaker 1: not only for this year, but definitely for next year.
• 5:15
Speaker 1: And those two teams are both one and three. The
• 5:18
Speaker 1: Giants loan victory over a Cardinals team that had a
• 5:22
Speaker 1: miracle comeback. The Jets loan victory was Week one and
• 5:25
Speaker 1: what was one of the most wild finishes in NFL
• 5:29
Speaker 1: season if you look at it now, they somehow beat
• 5:32
Speaker 1: the Bills that look like they're a locomotive and it's
• 5:35
Speaker 1: two one in three teams the biggest media market in Aaron.
• 5:39
Speaker 1: I feel so much better about the Jets right now
• 5:42
Speaker 1: than I do the New York Giants, as a Buffalo
• 5:45
Speaker 1: Bills fan who also quote unquote claims is a New
• 5:48
Speaker 1: York team, you know, I'm talking about the city when
• 5:49
Speaker 1: I talk about New York team from afar. When you
• 5:52
Speaker 1: look at the Jets and the Giants, what's your feel?
• 5:55
Speaker 3: So, I mean, going back to Zach Wilson, it did
• 5:58
Speaker 3: kind of feel like in the past twelve months he's
• 6:02
Speaker 3: lost the job three times because he was the starter,
• 6:05
Speaker 3: and then he lost it, and then Rogers came in,
• 6:07
Speaker 3: he lost it again, and then he Rogers gets hurt,
• 6:10
Speaker 3: and then as soon as that game's over, everyone's just like,
• 6:13
Speaker 3: who can the Jets get Can they get Flacco? Can
• 6:16
Speaker 3: they It's like it's he just is losing it again
• 6:18
Speaker 3: and then to suddenly have this game. Yeah, you're right,
• 6:21
Speaker 3: like he's not going to be the news this week,
• 6:23
Speaker 3: which is great for him. And as opposed to Jones,
• 6:27
  Speaker 3: who I don't know. I mean like he didn't, he
• 6:31
Speaker 3: didn't do himself any favors, but that line, I mean
• 6:34
Speaker 3: he was he would. Yeah, you can't blame that.
• 6:37
Speaker 1: But I pushed back on that, and I know this
• 6:39
Speaker 1: is not fair, and I sound like I got something
• 6:41
Speaker 1: personal against Daniel Jones. I don't. I was his biggest
• 6:43
Speaker 1: cheerleader last year when he was proving the same doubters
• 6:46
Speaker 1: that brave Zach you know he was. He did it,
• 6:48
Speaker 1: he won, they went to playoffs. They beat a Minnesota
• 6:50
Speaker 1: team on the road in the very hostile environment, and
• 6:52
Speaker 1: he played great. I am watching on Sunday on my
• 6:57
Speaker 1: little phone on the red Zone YouTube, which has been fantastic,
• 7:01
Speaker 1: if I can. The Steelers defense, which suffocated everybody the
• 7:06
Speaker 1: last few weeks and was absolutely dominant the previous week.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: In a Sunday night game against the Raiders, I'm watching CJ.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: Stroud behind an offensive line that doesn't have Howard, that
• 7:18
Speaker 1: doesn't have Tunzel, that is down four starters, and CJ
• 7:22
Speaker 1: Stroud looks like Dan Marino throwing the ball to Nico
• 7:24
Speaker 1: Collins in Tank Dell and I'm like, all right, I
• 7:27
Speaker 1: know he's a number two overall pick and you expect
• 7:29
Speaker 1: that someone to be like, don't tell me about the
• 7:31
Speaker 1: offensive line, Like figure this out. The Giants had eleven
• 7:34
Speaker 1: days to prepare for this game. They got blown out
• 7:36
Speaker 1: by the Niners on the road. Fine, you know whatever,
• 7:38
Speaker 1: that's okay, No Saquon no Andrew Tomas. Eleven days to
• 7:41
Speaker 1: prepare for the Seattle Seahawks, who, by the way, Andy
• 7:45
Speaker 1: Dalton sliced up last week. I mean Andy Dalton walked
• 7:47
Speaker 1: in there with Carolina winless team and put up a
• 7:50
Speaker 1: ton of yards and looked fine against Seattle. Suddenly the
• 7:53
Speaker 1: Seattle defenses of Steel Curtain or the Legion of Boom,
• 7:57
Speaker 1: and with you know, eleven days to prepare for that
• 8:00
Speaker 1: Seattle defense, the Giants could not do anything on offense.
• 8:04
Speaker 1: I'm sorry if this sounds very New York folk and
• 8:06
Speaker 1: your listener of the season and you're like, guys, there's
• 8:08
Speaker 1: more teams. It's just two one in three teams, two
• 8:11
Speaker 1: very different feels. Can I go through story time for
• 8:14
Speaker 1: a little bit on what my Sunday was like, yeah,
• 8:17
Speaker 1: let's go, all right if heelsen this podcast. You know,
• 8:20
Speaker 1: I travel quite a bit for the NFL during the
• 8:23
Speaker 1: season and the season with Peter Schreger, but it's sometimes
• 8:26
Speaker 1: the season of Peter Schreger. And that's because this is
• 8:29
Speaker 1: my podcast and we can do what we want. iHeart
• 8:32
Speaker 1: in the NFL said, tell the stories that we don't know. Well,
• 8:35
  Speaker 1: I'll give you a story. I had a really cool
• 8:38
Speaker 1: Sunday and this is one of those pinch me moments
• 8:40
Speaker 1: where I'm like, I'm actually paid to do this. I
• 8:41
Speaker 1: am a very lucky guy. Sunday I usually travel from
• 8:47
Speaker 1: on a Saturday morning from New York to Los Angeles
• 8:50
Speaker 1: and do the Fox NFL kickoff show in studio. I
• 8:53
Speaker 1: got a special exemption this weekend because the Eagles, the
• 8:56
Speaker 1: defending NFC champions, were undefeated. They only have two home
• 9:03
Speaker 1: one o'clock games this entire season. Is that not nuts?
• 9:08
Speaker 1: Eagles fans only get to two to one o'clock games
• 9:11
Speaker 1: out of all their home games, six of them are
• 9:15
Speaker 1: either four o'clock Thursday night, Sunday night, or Monday night.
• 9:21
Speaker 1: So with that in mind, I reached out to the
• 9:24
Speaker 1: Fox NFL folks and said, hey, this could be a
• 9:26
Speaker 1: cool opportunity. I'm never going to get a chance to
• 9:28
Speaker 1: do Eagles this year from Philly. I can take a
• 9:30
Speaker 1: train that can drive down whatever. Let me get the
• 9:33
Speaker 1: one opportunity to interview the head coach before the game
• 9:36
Speaker 1: where we can do it on the pregame show. Now,
• 9:37
Speaker 1: of course the Eagles have to approve that. Nick Sirianni
• 9:40
Speaker 1: has to say, sure, I don't mind seconds before kickoff
• 9:42
Speaker 1: talking to you and doing three questions. Fortunately enough, the
• 9:45
Speaker 1: producers at Fox, the executives at Fox who are great,
• 9:47
Speaker 1: We're like, that's perfect because we're doing Commanders Eagles talk.
• 9:51
Speaker 1: Why don't we use that as our lift off point.
• 9:53
Speaker 1: You'll be there, you'll get a feel for it. You
• 9:54
Speaker 1: can do that game. So I go to Philly early
• 9:58
Speaker 1: Sunday and I'm there in the bowels and I got
• 10:00
Speaker 1: to experience game day in Philly, which was awesome. This
• 10:03
Speaker 1: was an amazing atmosphere, and Nick Sirianni was cool enough
• 10:07
Speaker 1: to do an interview. I talked about what they've got
• 10:10
Speaker 1: going on. I talked about Philly's fan base and how
• 10:13
Speaker 1: they've been rallying around this team. But I also talked
• 10:15
Speaker 1: about with him the fact that the Commanders beat the
• 10:18
Speaker 1: Eagles last year and it was Taylor Heinicke, but it
• 10:21
Speaker 1: was the only regular season game that Jalen Hurts lost.
• 10:24
Speaker 1: And Sirianni was awesome in the interview, and he was
• 10:28
Speaker 1: really honest. He's like, we do not overlook anybody, but
• 10:31
Speaker 1: Washington is a divisional opponent and they have given us
• 10:35
Speaker 1: some really good fights the last few years. We will
• 10:37
Speaker 1: not be overlooking this, sure enough. I do the interview.
• 10:40
Speaker 1: It's great. I get to roam the field, and here
• 10:42
Speaker 1: are some of the people I spoke to off camera
• 10:45
Speaker 1: for extended amounts of time. I got to talk to
• 10:48
Speaker 1: Howie Roseman, the GM of the Eagles, and we had
• 10:50
Speaker 1: a very candid conversation about the selections of not only
• 10:54
Speaker 1: Jalen Carter, but Nolan Smith and Kyrie Ringo, who were
• 10:57
Speaker 1: from Georgia, what that connection was like, and how he
• 10:59
Speaker 1: made about those picks. Very interesting talk from how I
• 11:04
Speaker 1: then had a good chat with their defense of line
• 11:06
Speaker 1: coach Jeremiah Washburn, who has been there and was in
• 11:11
Speaker 1: Detroit before this. Jeremiah, I don't know if he would
• 11:14
Speaker 1: be comfortable with me saying it. So here we are.
• 11:15
Speaker 1: I'm going to say it anyway. I said, Uh, what
• 11:18
Speaker 1: do you see in Jalen Carter? He's like, this dude
• 11:23
Speaker 1: is an absolute bohemo. This guy is the real deal.
• 11:26
Speaker 1: And he said Fletcher Cox said it best. And I
• 11:28
Speaker 1: don't know if he said it publicly or if he
• 11:30
Speaker 1: said it just to Jeremiah said anything he goes, Fletcher
• 11:32
Speaker 1: Cox said it best. I'm like, what if Fletch have
• 11:34
Speaker 1: to say? He says. Fletcher Cock says that Jalen Carter
• 11:37
Speaker 1: wakes up and he gets out of bed and he
• 11:41
Speaker 1: looks to what ass what? I was like, Ah, if
• 11:47
Speaker 1: you watch him in warmups like I remember, and now
• 11:50
Speaker 1: obviously he's in the headlines for the reasons. I remember
• 11:53
Speaker 1: Chandler Jones during warm ups when he was with the
• 11:55
Speaker 1: Patriots Ones and I had to take a video and
• 11:57
Speaker 1: I put it on Twitter. I'm like, this guy's just
• 11:59
Speaker 1: just just it's a different speed and like it's and
• 12:03
Speaker 1: Aaron Donald. I get to watch him pregame who And
• 12:06
Speaker 1: this is me as a sportswriter slash podcaster trying to
• 12:09
Speaker 1: imitate move. If you're watching on video, I'm doing that.
• 12:12
Speaker 1: And if you're listening to the audio, the who is
• 12:14
Speaker 1: me like doing Jalen Carter was destroying tackling dummies for
• 12:18
Speaker 1: the end. I'm like, oh, so, like, I get that
• 12:20
Speaker 1: experience and you're on the game. I get that on
• 12:22
Speaker 1: the field. Then I went to the Washington side and
• 12:24
Speaker 1: I talked to Jason right there president for a bit
• 12:26
Speaker 1: and just about the new blood there, and it was
• 12:28
Speaker 1: really cool. I love being at games. I love being
• 12:31
Speaker 1: at prega and then a game breaks out and it's
• 12:34
Speaker 1: absolutely awesome. The Washington Commanders were not scared of the
• 12:37
Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. They had not a flicker of hesitation when
• 12:41
Speaker 1: they went in there. They scored on their opening drive,
• 12:43
Speaker 1: they scored on their second drive, like they came right
• 12:45
Speaker 1: down the field, and they tested Philly. Philly comes out
• 12:49
Speaker 1: with the win. They're four and oh. They don't apologize
• 12:51
Speaker 1: for anything. But to get a field for both teams
• 12:53
Speaker 1: was huge for me. But I wasn't done, Aaron, No,
• 12:57
Speaker 1: I wasn't done. I reached out to the Jets earlier
• 13:01
Speaker 1: in the week and I said, I'm not in Los
• 13:02
Speaker 1: Angeles doing the pregame show. I'm actually in Philadelphia. That
• 13:05
Speaker 1: game should around three thirty four o'clock. If I get
• 13:09
Speaker 1: on my horse, I can make it to Jets Chiefs,
• 13:13
Speaker 1: which felt like more than just a football game. It
• 13:15
Speaker 1: felt like a pop culture moment because of obvious reasons
• 13:18
Speaker 1: of who was in the building. I was there to
• 13:21
Speaker 1: get a feel for the defending champions, the Chiefs, but
• 13:24
Speaker 1: also to see what the Jets had left in the tank.
• 13:26
Speaker 1: And if I happened to end up with Taylor Swift
• 13:30
Speaker 1: and Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and you name who,
• 13:33
Speaker 1: and if Blake Lively wants to celebrate with me, that's fine.
• 13:36
  Speaker 1: I would have been Okay, I wouldn't. I don't want
• 13:38
Speaker 1: to be the story. But if I happened to be
• 13:40
  Speaker 1: the story, then.
• 13:41
  Speaker 4: So be it.
• 13:41
Speaker 1: Right. Well, I didn't see any of those people, but
• 13:44
Speaker 1: I got on my horse. I get to the game. Pregame,
• 13:47
Speaker 1: Jets are cool enough to credential me. I have a
• 13:49
Speaker 1: press box seat, Like, I'm excited, I'll be there pregame.
• 13:52
Speaker 1: I walk on the field and I'm just walking around
• 13:55
Speaker 1: and you know, one of our guests and our friends
• 13:57
Speaker 1: in my Brooklyn homie, Paul Rudd is there with his
• 13:59
Speaker 1: entire family, and Paul's like, come over here. I'm like, eh,
• 14:02
Speaker 1: I don't wanna. All right, he's over there on the
• 14:04
Speaker 1: Chiefs sideline there, go over there, say hi to him
• 14:08
Speaker 1: and Brett Veach, the GM and the Chiefs is there.
• 14:10
Speaker 1: We're talking for twenty minutes, Paul, his son, Jack, Me,
• 14:14
Speaker 1: Brett Veach, We're all talking about all the different players
• 14:17
Speaker 1: on the Chiefs, not Mahomes and Kelsey, but like what
• 14:19
Speaker 1: Trent McDuffie has done this year to make him one
• 14:22
Speaker 1: of an elite corners, What George carl Laftis has done,
• 14:24
Speaker 1: and what kind of student car Laftis is. Carlaftis is
• 14:27
Speaker 1: one of these guys that Veach was like, he's like
• 14:29
Speaker 1: the teacher's pet. He is in there every morning talking
• 14:31
Speaker 1: to our defensive line coach. He's got film, he's trying
• 14:34
Speaker 1: to do the work. The message in Kansas City is
• 14:37
Speaker 1: it can't just be Mahomes and Kelsey. These other guys
• 14:40
Speaker 1: have to step up. And if you watch that game,
• 14:42
Speaker 1: it was Pachaco, it was Noah Gray, it was Willie Gay,
• 14:46
Speaker 1: it was younger players stepping up because Mahomes did not
• 14:49
Speaker 1: seem to have the Mahomes game until the very end
• 14:51
Speaker 1: where he pulls it out. But as I'm walking, I
• 14:55
Speaker 1: get a text from someone on the Jets, not a player,
• 14:58
Speaker 1: not a coach, someone else, an executive type person, and
• 15:02
Speaker 1: they reach out. I don't want to give their name
• 15:03
Speaker 1: because if you give their name, you're revealing your sources
• 15:05
Speaker 1: in this one. Hey, I see you over on the
• 15:08
Speaker 1: chief sideline. Come say hello real quick. So I make
• 15:11
Speaker 1: my way over to the Jets area and I'm on
• 15:13
Speaker 1: the sidelines, but I'm not trying to come too close
• 15:15
Speaker 1: to the team because it's before the game, and you know,
• 15:18
Speaker 1: I don't have all access in this situation. And as
• 15:22
Speaker 1: I'm doing that, I get a little hey, see who's here?
• 15:26
Speaker 1: And I looked to my right and he's got a
• 15:28
Speaker 1: little smirk on his face. What's up, buddy? Aaron Rodgers
• 15:32
Speaker 1: Rogers on the crutches on sidelines. We talked briefly. Didn't
• 15:36
Speaker 1: get into the timetable, if you will, but I will
• 15:38
Speaker 1: say this, good spirits moving on those crutches. I was
• 15:44
Speaker 1: told this would be four weeks or five weeks before
• 15:46
Speaker 1: he can be off that scooter. He's on crutches, there's
• 15:49
Speaker 1: no boot, He's moving and I'm watching Rogers during pre game. Yeah,
• 15:54
Speaker 1: I know everyone's out there and Sauces giving up pep
• 15:57
Speaker 1: talk and you got Breize Hall doing the drills, and
• 16:00
Speaker 1: I'm not doing the same thing I was doing with
• 16:01
Speaker 1: Jalen Carter. While I'm watching the Jets, I'm just focused
• 16:04
Speaker 1: on their quarterback who will not see the field till
• 16:06
Speaker 1: the least January, if he even does, or December, whatever
• 16:10
Speaker 1: the timetable might be. And I'm watching Rogers and he's
• 16:13
Speaker 1: not in everybody's face, but he is very active participant
• 16:18
Speaker 1: in the conversations on the sidelines with some of these guys.
• 16:21
Speaker 1: And I think the Aaron Rodgers effect can be real
• 16:23
Speaker 1: because I saw it firsthand how these players. He's not
• 16:27
Speaker 1: in their face, he's not demanding spotlight. But like he
• 16:29
Speaker 1: spoke to the team on Saturday night, he was there
• 16:31
Speaker 1: on Sunday, he was in Woody Johnson's box. All good.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: I think that there's no coincidence that Zach Wilson played
• 16:39
Speaker 1: the game of his life and that Rogers at least
• 16:41
Speaker 1: has been a part of the game planning, and it's
• 16:43
Speaker 1: been a part of the team on Saturday. But here's
• 16:46
Speaker 1: where the night takes the Peter Schrager twist, and I
• 16:50
Speaker 1: just end up wherever. Okay, So amongst the people I
• 16:54
Speaker 1: spoke to pregame, it's not just Paul Roden Bretviach like
• 16:57
Speaker 1: I saw. I talked with Clark Hunt for a long time.
• 17:01
Speaker 1: And Clark Hunt is obviously a guest on the show
• 17:03
Speaker 1: during Super Bowl week, but he's the chairman and CEO
• 17:07
Speaker 1: president of the Kansas City Chiefs. Mark Donovan, who is
• 17:11
Speaker 1: their CEO in maybe different titles with Clark and Mark,
• 17:16
Speaker 1: talked to him for a while getting a feel for,
• 17:18
Speaker 1: you know, the Chiefs organization as a whole. As I'm
• 17:21
Speaker 1: getting that grasp there, I'm like, Okay, I'm gonna go
• 17:24
Speaker 1: up to the press box, but I do the Rogers thing.
• 17:26
Speaker 1: I talked to him for a bit. As I'm stepping out,
• 17:28
Speaker 1: I you know, get a tap on the shoulder from
• 17:31
Speaker 1: someone else in the Jets organization says, why don't you
• 17:33
Speaker 1: come by for a second and just say hello, you know,
• 17:37
Speaker 1: to some of the people at the highest level of
• 17:39
Speaker 1: the ownership group, if you can, if during the game,
• 17:41
Speaker 1: if you want just I come in, just say hi. Whatever.
• 17:44
Speaker 1: So Christopher Johnson is, you know, with Woody Johnson obviously
• 17:50
Speaker 1: owners of the Jets. I was in the press box.
• 17:52
  Speaker 1: I'm a journalist. I've wearing that hat. But I'm like,
• 17:55
Speaker 1: if I got the invite, do you say hi? Do
• 17:57
Speaker 1: you not say hi? So I just pop in before
• 17:59
Speaker 1: the game and I walk in just to say hello,
• 18:01
Speaker 1: and I look around this room and they were on
• 18:03
Speaker 1: the big deviatrios. I don't think here was the crew
• 18:06
Speaker 1: that was in this suite. Everyone's talking about Ryan Reynolds
• 18:09
Speaker 1: and Blake Lively and Hugh Jackman. And you know, I
• 18:14
Speaker 1: respect the Jets as a business because as NBC went
• 18:17
Speaker 1: to that box seventeen times, I don't think the Jets
• 18:20
Speaker 1: showed Taylor Swift once on their in house jumbo tron.
• 18:24
Speaker 1: And they're like, you know what, they're here to root
• 18:25
Speaker 1: for the Chiefs. We're not showing them. The box that
• 18:29
Speaker 1: they should have shown was the crew that I saw
• 18:31
Speaker 1: watching the game together. And I'll give a quick story
• 18:33
Speaker 1: that was hilarious. But I walk in, I say high sheepishly,
• 18:37
Speaker 1: and I'm like whatever, I'm an invisible ghost in that room.
• 18:40
Speaker 1: In that box, you want to talk about a murderer's
• 18:44
Speaker 1: row of like of like guys that I would want
• 18:46
Speaker 1: to have beers with. First guy, Ray freaking Romano was
• 18:51
Speaker 1: in the room. Ray Romano's in the room. So Ray
• 18:56
  Speaker 1: Romano's in the.
• 18:57
Speaker 5: Room, and I'm like, you know, do you say some
• 18:59
Speaker 5: of the others like, I don't think Ray No's but
• 19:01
Speaker 5: as we film, I don't think raynols No. I know
• 19:03
Speaker 5: Ray doesn't know this, but as we film this podcast
• 19:05
Speaker 5: right now and we record this, Aaron, you and I
• 19:09
Speaker 5: are in this cool, little like green room that Sny
• 19:12
Speaker 5: puts us in, which is where we film Good Morning
• 19:14
Speaker 5: Football downtown in Manhattan. This room, for four years I
• 19:18
Speaker 5: shared with Nate Burlison as a dressing room. Nate would
• 19:22
Speaker 5: get down to his skivvies in front of me, put
• 19:23
Speaker 5: on his really fancy clothes and look great. I would
• 19:26
Speaker 5: throw on my hooded sweatshirt and my new balanced sneakers
• 19:30
Speaker 5: and go and do the job. But Nate and I
• 19:31
Speaker 5: would be in here every morning from five.
• 19:33
Speaker 1: Thirty to six point fifty, I would say, And Nate
• 19:36
Speaker 1: became a best friend and her brother. Great. Everyone thinks
• 19:38
Speaker 1: we're breaking down all twenty two film like we're Brian
• 19:41
Speaker 1: Baldinger that we did not watch football in the morning.
• 19:43
Speaker 1: We get football all day. Nate and I would watch
• 19:46
Speaker 1: Everybody Loves Raymond reruns on TBS. There's a TD in here,
• 19:50
Speaker 1: volume up. We probably watched eight seasons, no every episode,
• 19:53
Speaker 1: and it was not even a conversation. We'd watch the
• 19:55
Speaker 1: commercials everything. Everybody loves Raymonds. So here's Ray Romano as
• 19:59
Speaker 1: I walk in and he's in there, and I'm like,
• 20:02
Speaker 1: do I say something doing not another wrinkle? Last week
• 20:06
Speaker 1: I'm on my Jet Blue flight or two weeks ago
• 20:09
Speaker 1: to Fox, Jet Blue is running a couple movies. There
• 20:14
Speaker 1: was a movie and maybe you can google it real quick, Aaron,
• 20:16
  Speaker 1: because I wasn't even familiar with it. I didn't see
• 20:18
Speaker 1: any promotion for it, but I think it's called like
• 20:19
Speaker 1: Somewhere in Queens type in Ray Ramono.
• 20:22
  Speaker 3: Somewhere in Queens.
• 20:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a ninety minute movie that had me
• 20:26
Speaker 1: laughing and crying. It was fantastic. I think Ray Ramono
• 20:29
  Speaker 1: produced it.
• 20:30
Speaker 3: He might have his directorial debut and he's worked on
• 20:33
  Speaker 3: the screenplay.
• 20:34
Speaker 1: This movie was great. And the story is raised a
• 20:36
Speaker 1: part of an Italian family in Queens and everyone goes
• 20:40
Speaker 1: into one line of work. They're in construction. Sebastian Maniscalco
• 20:43
Speaker 1: plays his brother. Very quaint, small movie, and Laurie Metcalf
• 20:47
Speaker 1: is fantastic as the wife. And like you're talking about
• 20:49
Speaker 1: like Ray Ramono and Laurie Metcalf and Sebastian. Of course
• 20:52
Speaker 1: there's laughs in this thing. But the story is his
• 20:55
Speaker 1: son is a pretty good high school basketball player and
• 20:59
Speaker 1: he's a quiet kid. And I told him. I was like,
• 21:02
Speaker 1: you know, that's why I do go up to him.
• 21:03
Speaker 1: But you know, Daniel Jones is the character in this
• 21:06
Speaker 1: like quiet great athlete, doesn't say much and a girl
• 21:09
Speaker 1: breaks his heart. And I'm not giving any spoilers away,
• 21:12
Speaker 1: but like the girl breaks his heart and breaks his
• 21:14
Speaker 1: will to want to go play college basketball, and Ray
• 21:17
Speaker 1: goes above maybe where he should go. His character does
• 21:21
Speaker 1: to talk to the girl to convince her to maybe
• 21:23
Speaker 1: give the son and a second chance. And oh, it's
• 21:26
Speaker 1: a story. It is a beautiful movie. And I just
• 21:28
Speaker 1: seen it and I cried on the flight, and now
• 21:30
Speaker 1: I cried to every movie on the flat. I think
• 21:32
Speaker 1: I've cried to like like movies like Taken with like
• 21:35
Speaker 1: Lenisan and I cry at the end on Veneer on
• 21:37
Speaker 1: a plane, you just cry. Yeah, So Aaron, I'm I'm there,
• 21:40
Speaker 1: and I see Ray Romano and I know it's like
• 21:42
Speaker 1: he was a director, And I know this movie did
• 21:44
Speaker 1: not make you know, major waves. I know it's not
• 21:46
Speaker 1: Oscar nominated as of yet or whatever it is. And
• 21:48
  Speaker 1: I know it wasn't like a critical darling. I haven't
• 21:49
Speaker 1: heard anything about it, but I saw it and it
• 21:52
Speaker 1: was great. So I went up to him, and of
• 21:53
Speaker 1: course everyone goes up to him and talks about everybody
• 21:55
Speaker 1: loves Raymond whatever. I just said. You know, I was
• 21:58
Speaker 1: on a Jet Blue flight recently and I loved somewhere
• 22:01
Speaker 1: in Queens and ray who probably was approached by one
• 22:04
Speaker 1: hundred people. You know, his eyes lit up, he smiled
• 22:09
Speaker 1: and he was like, dude, thank you so much. He's like,
• 22:11
Speaker 1: I've gotten so many comments over the last week or
• 22:14
Speaker 1: two about this movie that I put my heart and
• 22:16
Speaker 1: soul in. But yes, because it's on the planes, people
• 22:20
Speaker 1: are watching it on the planes, and so I'm like,
• 22:22
Speaker 1: is it streaming. It's streaming on Hulu and next week,
• 22:25
Speaker 1: he said, and it's coming out. And he's like, gosh,
• 22:28
Speaker 1: it's crazy because that movie went out in the theater.
• 22:29
Speaker 1: We put everything into it. It was like my heart
• 22:31
Speaker 1: and the soul and like, and now people are kind
• 22:34
Speaker 1: of seeing I go, dude, if that movie came out
• 22:36
Speaker 1: ten years ago, it would have gotten a major you know,
• 22:39
Speaker 1: a theater, and it would have been if it was
• 22:40
Speaker 1: in a traditional situation ten years ago, where people saw
• 22:43
Speaker 1: romantic comedies and people watch movies other than Star Wars
• 22:46
Speaker 1: and superhero movies. It would have been great. Ray was
• 22:48
Speaker 1: so appreciative. I had the greatest experience meeting Ray Romano.
• 22:51
Speaker 1: He was so nice, he was so great. And then
• 22:53
Speaker 1: it was like game time. He was locked in, Aaron.
• 22:56
Speaker 1: The other people in this box sitting off to the side.
• 23:01
Speaker 1: I had it took a double take. I was like,
• 23:03
Speaker 1: what Kendall Roy himself, enemy Strong was sitting in this box.
• 23:08
Speaker 1: And when I tell you, maybe he just didn't want
• 23:10
Speaker 1: to talk to anybody, locked the f into the game,
• 23:15
Speaker 1: like wearing a Jets hat every play, watching analyzing, no
• 23:20
Speaker 1: bathroom breaks, no nothing like he was in. I had
• 23:23
Speaker 1: no idea. Jeremy Strong love football. He loves Jets football.
• 23:27
Speaker 1: What a great celebrity fan to have the eldest son,
• 23:31
Speaker 1: if you will. Gosh, he was still locked in. So
• 23:34
Speaker 1: there you go. Those are two like Titans. Next one,
• 23:40
Speaker 1: What is your favorite comedy show? Maybe of the last
• 23:43
Speaker 1: fifteen twenty years, like when you need like just a laugh,
• 23:46
  Speaker 1: what's yours? Aaron?
• 23:49
Speaker 3: So that came out in the last fifteen to twenty,
• 23:52
Speaker 3: Like what's your show probably The Office.
• 23:53
Speaker 1: Okay, great, that's perfect answer. The Office is one of
• 23:57
Speaker 1: mine too. If it's on, I'll watch it, yeah, if
• 24:00
  Speaker 1: I need a laugh or if I'm just I will
• 24:03
Speaker 1: watch Kurby Your Enthusiasm, and I will specifically watch Leon. Yeah.
• 24:09
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 24:10
Speaker 1: JB. Smooth was in this box. And I am telling you, Aaron,
• 24:15
Speaker 1: the JB. Smooth you see on TV is one hundred
• 24:19
Speaker 1: percent to JB Smooth. I saw it in this box.
• 24:22
Speaker 1: He sees me and we he's been on the show before,
• 24:25
Speaker 1: and immediately it's like, okay, okay, he's here, and here's
• 24:31
Speaker 1: here's here's my favorite character in maybe TV history Leon.
• 24:34
Speaker 5: And he starts doing that we are not worthy, like
• 24:36
Speaker 5: Wayne's world thing to me.
• 24:38
Speaker 1: Stop stop stop, comes over and immediately arm around me.
• 24:43
Speaker 1: We start talking and you know, the Jets are his team,
• 24:46
Speaker 1: and he was talking about Bruce Hopkins. He was talking
• 24:48
Speaker 1: about altoon like we go into Jets deep and he
• 24:51
Speaker 1: is so great, and then all of a sudden he
• 24:54
Speaker 1: goes on this incredible rant if you will slash bit
• 25:00
Speaker 1: slash monologue where the I could never imitate him, Like
• 25:04
Speaker 1: if I was to imitate him, all I'd be canceled
• 25:07
Speaker 1: for trying to limitate him be I just it wouldn't
• 25:10
Speaker 1: do him justice. His bit is that sauce is on
• 25:15
Speaker 1: the field, but the gravy's in the building. And he's
• 25:20
Speaker 1: pointing to himself that he JB. Smooth is the gravy.
• 25:26
Speaker 6: A whole bit about sauce on the steel. Gravy is
• 25:30
Speaker 6: the building and he's gravy. We talked for a while.
• 25:35
Speaker 6: He wants to come on the podcast amazing, will be
• 25:38
Speaker 6: a guest. Here's the part that gets a little tricky.
• 25:43
Speaker 6: He's with his longtime manager. I'll say his name. His
• 25:45
Speaker 6: name is Rick Dorfman.
• 25:47
Speaker 1: I don't know Rick. Rick is awesome. Rick comes over,
• 25:50
Speaker 1: introduces himself to me, says, JB. Would love to come
• 25:53
Speaker 1: on the podcast. Would love to come on the show. Says,
• 25:56
Speaker 1: let's exchange numbers. Rick presents me with a q R code.
• 26:02
Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, no, no no. This is very smart.
• 26:05
Speaker 1: This is a great way to do it. He doesn't
• 26:06
Speaker 1: have a business card. He says, scan this QR code.
• 26:10
Speaker 1: And I scan the QR code and it's all his
• 26:12
Speaker 1: contact information. I was like, that was the coolest thing ever.
• 26:16
Speaker 1: Phone number, email, everything. There was an app for it.
• 26:21
  Speaker 1: The app, I believe was called Blink b L I
• 26:23
  Speaker 1: n Q. He's like, you have to get blink. It's
• 26:25
Speaker 1: gonna be a game changer for you to not have
• 26:27
Speaker 1: to type in numbers. It's it just QR code. You
• 26:30
Speaker 1: scan it. It's great, that's what I do. JB and
• 26:34
Speaker 1: I have this incredible experience together. I'm talking, laughing, hugging.
• 26:40
Speaker 1: I filmed a video with him. He wanted to film
• 26:42
Speaker 1: a video like we had a plat like talking about
• 26:45
Speaker 1: if you want the ultimate Ying and Yang, it's probably
• 26:47
Speaker 1: Larry David and jbswoth. Yeah, I think we can't talk that.
• 26:50
Speaker 1: But like he and I do not look like we
• 26:53
Speaker 1: would be uh, you know, regular bedfellows. We got along great.
• 26:55
Speaker 1: It was incredible. I get in the car after the game,
• 26:59
Speaker 1: which was fantastic. Obviously, I go back to the press box.
• 27:02
Speaker 1: I watch from there that I try to beat the
• 27:04
Speaker 1: traffic just a little bit, which I did so I
• 27:05
Speaker 1: could do Good Morning Football. I had done two games.
• 27:09
Speaker 1: I get in the car. I have been up since
• 27:11
Speaker 1: four am because I got a full way to go
• 27:13
Speaker 1: to Philly and then I was ending the game. I
• 27:15
Speaker 1: got in the car around midnight. So that's a long day,
• 27:18
Speaker 1: but like two amazing football games. I was on cloud nine.
• 27:21
Speaker 1: It like reinvigorated me, like just being in two buildings,
• 27:24
Speaker 1: Like I love this sport, I love all of this.
• 27:26
Speaker 1: I get back in the car and I'm like, I'm
• 27:28
Speaker 1: immediately gonna say great to meet you to this, Rick Drfman.
• 27:32
Speaker 1: I go into my phone. It's gone. I can't find anything.
• 27:37
Speaker 1: I didn't save whatever that QR code thing was. And
• 27:40
Speaker 1: there is no silver lining as we record this on Tuesday,
• 27:43
Speaker 1: and this is a call to action. If anyone has
• 27:46
Speaker 1: Rick Dorfman's number or email, send it along to me.
• 27:48
Speaker 1: I want to have JB. Smooth on the podcast next week.
• 27:52
Speaker 1: He was incredible. My day was incredible. I woke up
• 27:55
Speaker 1: the next morning, I'm like, I feel like I completely
• 27:58
Speaker 1: ready to go and roaring to go, and I'm excited
• 28:02
Speaker 1: by a lot of stuff around the NFL.
• 28:04
  Speaker 4: CJ.
• 28:04
Speaker 1: Stroud looks amazing, Anthony Richard Loss looks amazing. Mcvay's team
• 28:08
Speaker 1: is fighting despite players that you know named Aaron Donald, Pukinakua,
• 28:12
Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford. And maybe that's it on the roster. There's
• 28:15
Speaker 1: so much good around the league right now. Maybe there's
• 28:19
Speaker 1: no better story than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Which leads
• 28:23
Speaker 1: to our guests for the week, Buccaneers GM Jason Light.
• 28:36
Speaker 1: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had the third most win
• 28:39
Speaker 1: since twenty twenty. They have had the fourth most regular
• 28:42
Speaker 1: season win since twenty twenty and if you look at
• 28:45
Speaker 1: their roster, they are number three on highest percentage of
• 28:50
Speaker 1: home grown talent, which means they have drafted or signed
• 28:54
Speaker 1: undrafted guys themselves who are now playing. The general manager
• 28:58
Speaker 1: of the tam Bay Buccaneers is the architect of this
• 29:01
Speaker 1: team and he is joining us on the season with
• 29:04
Speaker 1: Peter Scheger. Mister Jason Light the Bucks.
• 29:06
Speaker 4: How are we doing doing great? Man? Appreciate you having
• 29:10
  Speaker 4: me on.
• 29:11
Speaker 1: I figured the only time I can get you is
• 29:14
Speaker 1: during the bye week, and it certainly helps when the
• 29:17
Speaker 1: team is three and one as opposed to a different record.
• 29:20
Speaker 1: But you and I have known each other for many years,
• 29:22
Speaker 1: and I have to say the Tom Brady stuff was great,
• 29:25
Speaker 1: and of course last year again they were great. To
• 29:27
Speaker 1: see this team at the top of the NFC sound
• 29:29
Speaker 1: standings as we head towards the bye I don't think
• 29:32
Speaker 1: a lot of people saw that, me included. How proud
• 29:34
Speaker 1: are you of this team? First mouth of football?
• 29:36
Speaker 4: Well well, first of all, we've got a long season
• 29:40
Speaker 4: ahead of us, so I know we're not putting the
• 29:42
Speaker 4: cart before the horse here. But you know, I'm very
• 29:46
Speaker 4: proud of the coaching staff, the football staff, everybody here
• 29:50
Speaker 4: in the building, but then the players too. But I
• 29:52
Speaker 4: will say that I went on record several times in
• 29:55
Speaker 4: training camp people kind of were writing us off, and
• 29:57
Speaker 4: I said, I just liked the DNA of this team.
• 30:00
Speaker 4: I just liked the way that it was all coming
• 30:03
Speaker 4: together and the players to prove to the world that
• 30:08
Speaker 4: you know that there we still have good players. We're
• 30:10
Speaker 4: still a good team. And and so I'm not surprised
• 30:13
Speaker 4: that you know that we started off the way we did.
• 30:16
Speaker 4: You know, we have great coaches too.
• 30:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think it's sneaky with what the Bucks
• 30:20
Speaker 1: roster is. And I think a lot of people, if
• 30:22
Speaker 1: you looked at it from thirty thousand feet, said, okay,
• 30:24
Speaker 1: Tom Brady was dropped in, they won, they win the
• 30:27
Speaker 1: next year, all right, tom Brady's moved out of the thing,
• 30:30
Speaker 1: and it's like, all right, they're going to fall apart.
• 30:32
Speaker 1: But I'm looking at some numbers that my research team
• 30:36
Speaker 1: has helped put together. Most total snaps by a team's
• 30:40
Speaker 1: own first through fifth round pick since twenty fourteen, and
• 30:44
Speaker 1: it's the Bucks by a mile. And it's most total
• 30:47
Speaker 1: games started by a team's own first through fifth round
• 30:50
Speaker 1: pick since twenty fourteen, and it's the Bucks by a mile.
• 30:53
Speaker 1: You go through these guys, whether it be Mike Evans
• 30:56
Speaker 1: or Godwin or vite Veya or Devin White or Jamel Dee,
• 30:59
Speaker 1: all over the guys over the years. This is homegrown talent.
• 31:02
Speaker 1: There's something to that when you look at this team,
• 31:05
Speaker 1: do you see this is like there's a sense of
• 31:07
Speaker 1: pride that, hey, we drafted these guys and for the
• 31:10
Speaker 1: most part, a lot of them are performing at a
• 31:12
Speaker 1: high level and key spots.
• 31:13
Speaker 4: Oh absolutely, I mean that's that's what we in personnel.
• 31:17
Speaker 4: I mean we want to we all aspire to as
• 31:21
Speaker 4: a GM, as a scout, as a personnel director or
• 31:25
Speaker 4: what have you. You want to you want to grow your own.
• 31:28
Speaker 4: You want to you want to bring them in, you
• 31:31
Speaker 4: want to develop them, You want them to understand the
• 31:33
Speaker 4: way that we do things as an organization. You you
• 31:37
Speaker 4: want to give them, you want to reward them with
• 31:39
Speaker 4: contracts and keep your own and you know that's what
• 31:43
  Speaker 4: we're doing. And you know we've got we've got a
• 31:45
Speaker 4: great First of all, I the only thing I will
• 31:49
Speaker 4: pat myself on the back for is I've hired extremely
• 31:53
Speaker 4: well that's the only thing I'm going to say that
• 31:56
Speaker 4: about me. That our staff has done an outstanding job.
• 31:59
Speaker 4: Whether it's the scouts, the personnel directors, spy, Tech, Greenburn, Jackie,
• 32:03
Speaker 4: I mean the whole I could name everybody. I'm going
• 32:05
Speaker 4: to leave somebody out, but the coaching staff.
• 32:08
Speaker 1: Don't forget my boy Byron down there are the best
• 32:10
Speaker 1: scouts in the game.
• 32:11
  Speaker 4: There's no doubt.
• 32:11
Speaker 1: Give Byron love Byron.
• 32:13
Speaker 4: He has been here for a long time and he
• 32:16
Speaker 4: is incredible, incredible, So I could go on and on.
• 32:20
Speaker 4: So but anyway, and our coaching staff just having the
• 32:23
Speaker 4: patience with these players. So it's it's been awesome bringing
• 32:28
Speaker 4: everyone to be on the same page.
• 32:30
Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's it's cool. And even look at this
• 32:33
Speaker 1: team now, and Baker's the new story, and Baker people
• 32:37
Speaker 1: doubted and Bakers spent time in Carolina and then was
• 32:40
Speaker 1: of course with the Rams left over, and Baker looks
• 32:43
Speaker 1: great and competent, and you guys go into New Orleans
• 32:45
Speaker 1: and win the signing of Baker Mayfield is one story.
• 32:48
Speaker 1: The other story is how well he has taken to
• 32:50
Speaker 1: this team and they've taken to him. Can you go
• 32:52
Speaker 1: through the Baker Mayfield experience for you guys when you
• 32:54
Speaker 1: were looking after Brady hung him up, like, what's the
• 32:57
  Speaker 1: next step?
• 32:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you know Baker. Now, as it turns out, Baker,
• 33:03
Speaker 4: he's a very very smart person. I knew he was smart,
• 33:07
Speaker 4: you know, we did our due diligence on him coming out.
• 33:10
Speaker 4: We weren't looking for a quarterback that year. But knew
• 33:13
Speaker 4: that he was smart. I didn't realize just how incredibly
• 33:16
Speaker 4: smart he is. And he was targeting us, I mean
• 33:20
Speaker 4: maybe more than we were targeting him.
• 33:22
Speaker 1: And he saw a little flirt.
• 33:24
Speaker 4: He saw this as an awesome opportunity for him, you know,
• 33:28
Speaker 4: And we told him from the beginning that this is
• 33:29
Speaker 4: going to be a you're going to be in a
• 33:31
Speaker 4: competition here because we really like Kyle Trask. And he
• 33:34
Speaker 4: didn't you know, as you know, Baker, he didn't flinch.
• 33:37
Speaker 4: He accepted that and you know, he just ran with it.
• 33:40
Speaker 4: And it was a good competition. But we saw a
• 33:43
Speaker 4: lot out of Kyle that we loved to see too.
• 33:45
Speaker 4: He was doing a did a hell of a job
• 33:47
Speaker 4: for us, but he is such a you know, even
• 33:53
Speaker 4: as I go around town, people know what's Baker like?
• 33:55
  Speaker 4: Is he a good guy? It's like, I don't know
• 33:58
Speaker 4: where this started that he wasn't a good guy. And
• 34:02
Speaker 4: I mean, I think you can point to a few
• 34:04
Speaker 4: things that maybe people got the wrong pression of him.
• 34:07
Speaker 4: But he's a freaking awesome dude. He is a dude
• 34:11
Speaker 4: and the players saw it right away. I mean, he's
• 34:14
Speaker 4: whether he's taken the lineman to the Bahamas, you know,
• 34:18
Speaker 4: during on our break, during camp, before the first you know,
• 34:22
Speaker 4: after final cuts to go golf, or he's he's spotted
• 34:26
Speaker 4: around town at dive bars with a different group of
• 34:28
Speaker 4: position group with receivers, with Mike Evans, you know, with
• 34:32
Speaker 4: a godwin with these guys. He really knows he's not
• 34:35
Speaker 4: doing it's not fake. He really knows how to how
• 34:37
Speaker 4: to be a dude with the team and they love.
• 34:40
Speaker 1: Him and and he and he lays it out there.
• 34:43
Speaker 1: You see him throwing blocks, you see the hit he
• 34:45
Speaker 1: took against the Saints on Sunday, and it's like he's
• 34:48
Speaker 1: gonna leave it all out in the field. What's your
• 34:49
Speaker 1: favorite Baker's story between you and him interacting, because I
• 34:52
Speaker 1: know coaches who've had him and are like, you know, Nick,
• 34:55
Speaker 1: they had him last year for a small window and
• 34:57
Speaker 1: he's like, yeah, Big Baker's hilarious too. He's funny as hell. Like,
• 35:00
Speaker 1: have you had a moment where he's had a snide
• 35:02
Speaker 1: commenters or cast a comment where you're like, this is
• 35:04
Speaker 1: one of us. This guy's a.
• 35:05
Speaker 4: Fun Yeah, a few. I probably shouldn't tell them on this,
• 35:12
Speaker 4: you know what. You know, what's really interesting is so
• 35:15
Speaker 4: I was born in this very small town in Nebraska, Freemont, Nebraska.
• 35:19
Speaker 4: It's about twenty thousand people. It's kind of halfway between
• 35:22
Speaker 4: Omahon and Lincoln. And when I was young, we moved
• 35:25
Speaker 4: to Colorado. So I grew up in Colorado. But that's
• 35:27
Speaker 4: where my parents both were from that area, and that's
• 35:31
Speaker 4: where my grandparents, you know, that's where they settled and
• 35:35
Speaker 4: all that stuff. So anyway that when we finally agreed
• 35:38
Speaker 4: to terms with Baker, I texted him, Hey, congrats, we're
• 35:42
Speaker 4: celebrating here. We're excited to have you. He said, yeah,
• 35:45
Speaker 4: you know, my wife is from your hometown.
• 35:48
Speaker 1: Get out of here's some Freemont, Nebraska.
• 35:50
Speaker 4: Freemont, Nebraska. So I texted my mom and my sister.
• 35:54
Speaker 4: They are like, oh yeah, the May family. Oh my god.
• 35:57
Speaker 4: They founded Fremont. You know, the library is named after him.
• 36:00
Speaker 4: You know, there's a you know, their names on buildings.
• 36:03
Speaker 4: I mean, but she's kind of a big deal in Fremont, Nebraska.
• 36:07
Speaker 4: But anyway, she turns out she's a wonderful person. She
• 36:11
Speaker 4: has a suite right next to my wife's at the stadium,
• 36:14
Speaker 4: and which could be an issue I guess with my
• 36:18
Speaker 4: when my father in law sits in there, you know,
• 36:21
Speaker 4: when things aren't going well, he tends to you. But anyway,
• 36:24
Speaker 4: we already warned her about that.
• 36:26
Speaker 1: But you hear him banging on the wall, don't don't know,
• 36:29
  Speaker 1: that's not that's not. Everything's okay, that's just my father
• 36:32
  Speaker 1: in law.
• 36:33
Speaker 4: But it just kind of tells you the researching, the
• 36:35
Speaker 4: detail he went into to know that I was born
• 36:37
Speaker 4: in his wife's hometown. So that's pretty cool.
• 36:41
Speaker 1: That's wild. Love this team right now, and love the
• 36:44
Speaker 1: juice that you guys have as you look at the
• 36:47
Speaker 1: roster up and down and you got all these guys
• 36:49
Speaker 1: that you guys drafted. Todd Bowles is the head coach,
• 36:53
Speaker 1: and a lot of people after last year said oh,
• 36:56
Speaker 1: I don't know if he could be the coach and
• 36:58
Speaker 1: after a post Brady world and yet this team for
• 37:00
Speaker 1: spinning to Todd, He's never gonna have the SoundBite that
• 37:02
Speaker 1: goes viral. What do you see from Todd Bowles on
• 37:05
Speaker 1: a day to day basis that you guys know, he's
• 37:07
Speaker 1: the man for this squad.
• 37:09
  Speaker 4: He's he's got incredible patience, very focused, but he's a
• 37:15
Speaker 4: he's a great teacher. So it'll be once or twice
• 37:20
Speaker 4: a week you go down. You know, I'll pop into
• 37:22
Speaker 4: his office, you know, several times a day just to
• 37:25
Speaker 4: talk about little things with sometimes just a book, but
• 37:29
Speaker 4: he'll have It's not uncommon for him to have the
• 37:32
Speaker 4: entire secondary sitting in his office, sprawled out couches and
• 37:36
Speaker 4: having food delivered up there and him just having a
• 37:40
Speaker 4: session with them, just going over tape and just talking
• 37:44
  Speaker 4: through things.
• 37:44
Speaker 1: Saw picture this, you got, you got Windfield, you got,
• 37:47
Speaker 1: you got all these guys and they come in and
• 37:48
Speaker 1: they're just hanging with the coach. It's not an instructional
• 37:51
Speaker 1: period where it's you're in a lecture situation.
• 37:53
Speaker 4: Well it turns into that casual, It turns casual, but
• 37:56
Speaker 4: it's become like a weekly routine where he just wants
• 37:59
Speaker 4: to get them all on the same page.
• 38:00
Speaker 1: And it's, uh, this is the head coach talking to
• 38:02
  Speaker 1: a position group.
• 38:03
Speaker 4: I love this in his office, not in a meeting rooms.
• 38:06
Speaker 4: So it's I mean, he just that's just been common
• 38:09
Speaker 4: of him since for him, since he's been our been
• 38:12
Speaker 4: here as the defensive coordinators as well for all positions.
• 38:15
Speaker 4: You can see offensive players pop in and just he's
• 38:18
  Speaker 4: just a very h He's got a very soothing way
• 38:21
Speaker 4: about him that that makes you been very fiery behind
• 38:25
Speaker 4: the scenes as well.
• 38:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that Rende went into the Hall of
• 38:29
Speaker 1: Fame this year, and I love that this organization with
• 38:32
Speaker 1: so much a part of it. It wasn't just oh, here's
• 38:33
Speaker 1: a former player, like I know from knowing Ronde and
• 38:36
Speaker 1: I know you very well, like he is a frequent
• 38:38
Speaker 1: visitor to the building. How much has Rende Barber played
• 38:41
Speaker 1: a role and not only this team's young players and success,
• 38:45
Speaker 1: but also for you and the guys in the organization
• 38:47
Speaker 1: to see a former buccaneer so active and vibrant in
• 38:50
Speaker 1: the team's day to day.
• 38:52
Speaker 4: Yeah, first of all, Rende quickly became one of my
• 38:55
Speaker 4: closer friends when I got the job here, it's going
• 38:58
Speaker 4: on year ten. I just love Ronde. He's our families
• 39:01
Speaker 4: are close, and jeez, you know you talk about this
• 39:05
Speaker 4: summer of joy, George, this is the year of Ronde.
• 39:08
Speaker 4: I mean, go on. He feels like I've been to
• 39:11
Speaker 4: about a million parties for Ronde's Hall of Fame already.
• 39:16
Speaker 4: But and then that's it and well deserved, well deserved.
• 39:18
Speaker 4: But I was actually just texting with him a few
• 39:20
Speaker 4: minutes ago before I came on here, Pat he was
• 39:22
Speaker 4: talking about the what he was excited about to play
• 39:25
Speaker 4: some of our players in the secondary. So he's you know,
• 39:28
Speaker 4: he's always welcome. Here's such a like he never missed
• 39:33
Speaker 4: a game, he never missed a practice.
• 39:36
  Speaker 1: It's insane.
• 39:37
  Speaker 4: I never missed a practice. I mean, it's it's crazy.
• 39:40
Speaker 4: You never see that. He should be an inspiration to
• 39:43
Speaker 4: a lot of our players.
• 39:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm sure they come in they see him
• 39:48
Speaker 1: and he's president, and it does go a long way.
• 39:52
Speaker 1: I go back to last like ten years with you.
• 39:54
Speaker 1: Obviously we talk about the Jamis era, and then there
• 39:57
Speaker 1: was these you know seasons where there is like hope
• 39:59
Speaker 1: and then it just fell short. And then Brady comes
• 40:01
Speaker 1: and you guys have this incredible ride. Have you had
• 40:04
Speaker 1: a chance to do the thirty thousand foot you yet
• 40:06
Speaker 1: and be able to look back with proper perspective on
• 40:09
Speaker 1: what the Brady era was like in Tampa or is
• 40:11
Speaker 1: it still too new or it's you're still in the
• 40:13
Speaker 1: whirlwind of Okay, on to the next or do you
• 40:15
Speaker 1: have a moment to like appreciate just how insane those
• 40:18
Speaker 1: I guess what twenty four months, maybe even longer it
• 40:21
Speaker 1: was with Tom Brady.
• 40:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he was nuts. Really No, I haven't yet.
• 40:28
Speaker 4: I mean there's been little moments, but you know, it was.
• 40:33
Speaker 4: It was awesome for the entire fan base, for the city.
• 40:37
Speaker 4: You know, we signed him. I kind of joked around
• 40:39
Speaker 4: with a few of the people here at one time
• 40:42
Speaker 4: that you know, real estate went up in Tampa and
• 40:46
Speaker 4: the Brady effect, and I was wondering why we didn't
• 40:48
Speaker 4: get a cut from that, you know, I mean, right, yeah,
• 40:52
Speaker 4: so Ronnie got Ronnie Barber Dave the mayor here in Tampa.
• 40:56
Speaker 4: Well we get some kind of day front. No, I'm kidding,
• 40:59
Speaker 4: it's it was. It was phenomenal. But I will say
• 41:01
Speaker 4: this was a big turning point obviously in the last
• 41:05
Speaker 4: few decades of the Buccaneers is Brady. But I would
• 41:08
Speaker 4: say it's gonna sound a little crazy. No offense to Brady.
• 41:12
Speaker 4: I mean, I don't want to minimize the effect that
• 41:14
Speaker 4: he had, but I think the total turning point, at
• 41:17
Speaker 4: least in my tenure here was the day that I
• 41:19
  Speaker 4: hired Bruce.
• 41:21
Speaker 1: So brusarians interesting. You know, that's a kind of a
• 41:24
Speaker 1: take right now, and it's obviously not dismissing what Brady did,
• 41:26
Speaker 1: but like Bruce changed the culture.
• 41:28
Speaker 4: Also, he came in along with Todd and you know,
• 41:31
Speaker 4: most of the staff, A lot of the stuff that
• 41:32
Speaker 4: we still have here on coaching staff changed the culture.
• 41:37
Speaker 4: And it was you know, I, you know all the
• 41:41
Speaker 4: Although I did know Tom from my time in New England,
• 41:44
Speaker 4: I was there when we drafted him. I wish I
• 41:46
Speaker 4: could say I was the one that told Belichick to
• 41:48
Speaker 4: draft him, but I didn't. But I knew him from
• 41:51
Speaker 4: seven years that I spent with the Patriots organization. But
• 41:54
Speaker 4: I don't still don't know if we would have gotten
• 41:56
  Speaker 4: him without Bruce.
• 41:57
Speaker 1: So I think Bruce, what was the pitch? I mean,
• 42:00
Speaker 1: I know we've probably told this story to others, but
• 42:02
Speaker 1: I don't recall it ever being on I'm like, what
• 42:03
Speaker 1: was the pitch from you and Bruce to Tom Brady,
• 42:05
Speaker 1: who at the time we knew was leaving New England.
• 42:07
Speaker 1: But I remember like an ESPN graphic of like fourteen
• 42:09
Speaker 1: available suitors for time, and I don't think the Buccaneers
• 42:12
Speaker 1: were number one on that list.
• 42:14
Speaker 4: You know, it was Bruce such a way about him.
• 42:20
Speaker 4: He's you know, he's just a Bruce is just such
• 42:23
Speaker 4: a phenomenal leader. And we had a great team, We
• 42:28
Speaker 4: had a great you know, Bass foundation, and it was
• 42:31
Speaker 4: basically a half once you come down here. What better
• 42:35
Speaker 4: place would her be to to win some games and
• 42:38
Speaker 4: win the Super Bowl than Tampa. You know, I don't
• 42:41
Speaker 4: know if that did it, but you know, probably would
• 42:43
  Speaker 4: have sold me.
• 42:44
Speaker 1: It's and Bruce's you know, he's known as the quarterback Whisper.
• 42:47
Speaker 1: Even long before he was in Tampa. He had a
• 42:49
Speaker 1: book I think called Quarterback Whisper. And if you want
• 42:51
Speaker 1: to go through the Bruce Arians lineage, it's from Peyton
• 42:54
Speaker 1: Manning to Carson Palmer. Uh, you know, you name a
• 42:57
Speaker 1: famous quarterback. They've had some experienced Roethlisberger with Bruce Arians,
• 43:02
Speaker 1: what was what was his pitch? To Brady more, Hey,
• 43:05
Speaker 1: I'm going to give you more ownership for this thing
• 43:06
Speaker 1: where you're gonna have a chance to fly, or I'm
• 43:08
Speaker 1: gonna take you even higher and bring you back to
• 43:10
Speaker 1: where you were when you were winning those super Bowls
• 43:11
  Speaker 1: with the Patriots.
• 43:12
Speaker 4: Well, no, I think he was always willing to give
• 43:15
Speaker 4: him some some leeway to do some things the way
• 43:19
Speaker 4: he wanted to do them now. But within within Bruce's
• 43:23
Speaker 4: you know, realm of things that he likes to do things,
• 43:25
Speaker 4: I think it was the perfect match matchup, to be
• 43:28
Speaker 4: honest with you, where Tom was like very analytical in
• 43:32
Speaker 4: terms of, you know, these are the passes that have
• 43:35
Speaker 4: the best chance of having success, and you know we're
• 43:38
Speaker 4: gonna keep it dialed in on these things, and Bruce's more, Okay,
• 43:41
Speaker 4: let's go for it.
• 43:42
Speaker 1: Let's go. We've got Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Throw
• 43:44
  Speaker 1: the ball, no.
• 43:45
Speaker 4: Risk it, no biscuit the you know the play right
• 43:47
Speaker 4: before half in the NFC Championship game.
• 43:49
Speaker 1: You know, yes, Scottie Miller, let's go.
• 43:51
Speaker 4: You know, without those kind of things, we wouldn't have
• 43:54
Speaker 4: made it to the Super Bowl. But without Tom as well,
• 43:56
Speaker 4: I think that was the perfect marriage. It was it
• 43:59
  Speaker 4: worked out? Well?
• 44:01
Speaker 1: You go through that run enough. Sorry, I'm lingering on
• 44:03
Speaker 1: twenty twenty. It's just such a such an amazing year.
• 44:05
Speaker 1: And we'll move on after this. But there was the
• 44:08
Speaker 1: wild card win, which was you know, big fine, and
• 44:13
Speaker 1: then we go through the next few when you go
• 44:15
Speaker 1: into New Orleans and then into Lambeau and then beat Mahomes.
• 44:19
Speaker 1: When you look at those three games, you probably look
• 44:21
Speaker 1: at them as one amazing experience, but which one was
• 44:24
Speaker 1: the most rewarding? Because to go in New Orleans and
• 44:26
Speaker 1: beat Shewan Peyton and Drew Brees had to feel pretty
• 44:28
Speaker 1: good after they beat the crap at you in the
• 44:29
Speaker 1: regular season, and then to go into Lambeau with Aaron
• 44:32
Speaker 1: Rodgers and all the hype that he was getting as
• 44:34
Speaker 1: an MVP. And then there's a Super Bowl, which is
• 44:36
Speaker 1: like we freaking on the Super Bowl and we be
• 44:37
Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes. Which one to you do you smile the most?
• 44:40
Speaker 1: Or maybe like at night when you're lying in bed,
• 44:42
Speaker 1: you're like, you know what, that was pretty damn good.
• 44:45
Speaker 4: Well, first of all, I do want to let you
• 44:46
Speaker 4: know we're not living in the past here. We've got
• 44:49
Speaker 4: I know. But if you were to ask me, you
• 44:53
Speaker 4: did ask me, I say, just because, and I mean,
• 44:57
Speaker 4: this will all due respect to the Saints, I hate them, yeah,
• 45:01
Speaker 4: you know, and they're just they're just they're just always
• 45:05
Speaker 4: just such a off team and so good it's and
• 45:09
Speaker 4: especially going there, it's such a tough place to win,
• 45:13
Speaker 4: and they beat us twice that year, and we went
• 45:17
Speaker 4: in and beat him, and I just kind of got
• 45:19
Speaker 4: the sits that, you know that they I don't think
• 45:22
Speaker 4: they were guaranteeing everybody that they were going to win,
• 45:25
Speaker 4: but they just had a kind of a cockiness to me,
• 45:28
Speaker 4: and then when they should they were a great team.
• 45:31
Speaker 4: So when we beat them, and I remember walking off
• 45:33
Speaker 4: the field and I pulled out my phone and I
• 45:35
Speaker 4: just tweeted we that and I was like, maybe I
• 45:42
Speaker 4: shouldn't have done that. But then all of a sudden,
• 45:44
Speaker 4: I started getting all the alerts and I was like,
• 45:47
Speaker 4: you know, this might come back to bite me.
• 45:48
Speaker 1: But you didn't delete the tree.
• 45:50
  Speaker 4: I didn't delete it.
• 45:52
Speaker 1: Sometimes you gotta be that way. All right, let's let's
• 45:55
Speaker 1: talk about this team and the way you guys have
• 45:56
Speaker 1: built this. Obviously I mentioned all the homegrown guys, but
• 45:59
Speaker 1: one of the little things that you might not notice,
• 46:00
Speaker 1: as if you were watching it, you guys have two
• 46:03
Speaker 1: young draft picks in the last couple of years playing
• 46:05
Speaker 1: at tackle, which is the hardest position to find. And
• 46:08
Speaker 1: as Baker is doing this from an efficiency standpoint, you
• 46:11
Speaker 1: notice he's not under dress at all moments. It seems
• 46:14
Speaker 1: like this offensive line, even with the loss of Jensen
• 46:17
Speaker 1: and the loss of Ally Marpett, they're anchored by those
• 46:20
Speaker 1: two tackles, and you guys drafted both of them. Is
• 46:22
Speaker 1: that a sense of pride for a guy like you
• 46:23
Speaker 1: who builds the roster from the ground up.
• 46:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, it really is a sense of pride for all
• 46:27
Speaker 4: of us that were involved in in you know, the
• 46:30
Speaker 4: selection of those guys of Tristan and Luke and you know,
• 46:34
Speaker 4: are we're very happy with our offensive line right now,
• 46:37
Speaker 4: Cody Mack and Haines, he's doing a good job for us.
• 46:40
Speaker 4: And then Filer, Matt who signed this year.
• 46:43
Speaker 1: So but the anchor, Matt Filer, let's go for.
• 46:47
Speaker 4: You know, Ryan unfortunately had the injury. He's not playing,
• 46:51
Speaker 4: but he still is here every day. He's in all
• 46:54
Speaker 4: the meetings. And if that, if that old line room
• 46:58
Speaker 4: is good and cohesive and and loose and having a
• 47:02
Speaker 4: good time, then the whole organization seems to be running well.
• 47:05
Speaker 4: So it's awesome to have Ryan in there because he's
• 47:09
Speaker 4: rubbing off. He understands what's that. You have to have
• 47:13
Speaker 4: a tone setter, and you know, he and I had
• 47:15
Speaker 4: this conversation a couple weeks ago practice, like, you don't
• 47:19
Speaker 4: want the tone setter to be the quarterback, you know
• 47:21
Speaker 4: when I'm talking about in terms of setting the tone
• 47:25
Speaker 4: bashing people on the field because you don't want him
• 47:27
Speaker 4: to get hurt, although Baker has been doing that, so
• 47:31
Speaker 4: but you want it to be a running back. You
• 47:32
Speaker 4: want to be receiver, of tight end or an offensive lineman.
• 47:35
Speaker 4: And we're starting to see that. You've saw Luke Gadecki
• 47:38
Speaker 4: this weekend. You know, oh my god, pinning up player,
• 47:41
Speaker 4: laying on him and just that intensity, and Cody Mauk
• 47:45
Speaker 4: has that in him and it's it's it makes it.
• 47:48
Speaker 4: Everybody thrives off of that.
• 47:49
Speaker 1: So we still defend.
• 47:50
Speaker 4: Ryan Jensen is still infusing his his his prickness into
• 47:55
  Speaker 4: the offensive line.
• 47:56
Speaker 1: Prickness. I like that, and you feel his presence at
• 47:59
Speaker 1: the way they're playing. And then if you look at
• 48:00
Speaker 1: the defensive line, and this is very inside Buccaneers. I
• 48:04
Speaker 1: know if you're listening and you're like, okay, I mean
• 48:06
Speaker 1: that defensive line is playing as well as anybody ELSEO.
• 48:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, there they've been. We we have a great group
• 48:14
Speaker 4: there too, and a great rotation and get some new
• 48:16
Speaker 4: players since you're great Gains being one of them, and
• 48:18
Speaker 4: he's done a great job. And uh so we've got
• 48:21
Speaker 4: we're pretty deep there, especially at outside linebacker, and we've
• 48:24
Speaker 4: got a nice little rotation going there and Vita's playing well.
• 48:27
Speaker 4: And so we'll get our first round pick coming back
• 48:30
Speaker 4: here soon, so that'll be exciting.
• 48:32
Speaker 1: You know. The the NFL network has our show Good
• 48:34
Speaker 1: Morning Football in the morning, and Jason mccordy does a
• 48:37
Speaker 1: list every week of the best defensive backs in football,
• 48:41
Speaker 1: and I think now twice a in Week one when
• 48:43
Speaker 1: you guys went into Minnesota and he made the big play,
• 48:45
Speaker 1: and then second was this week in New Orleans making
• 48:48
Speaker 1: the huge fumble, you know, claus fumble. In this one.
• 48:51
Speaker 1: Antoine Winfield's playing out of his mind. You drafted him
• 48:54
Speaker 1: in the second round and he has often said he
• 48:56
Speaker 1: believed he was a first round pick and he slipped.
• 48:58
Speaker 1: What did you see from him coming out of college
• 49:00
Speaker 1: and what do you see from him now playing in
• 49:03
Speaker 1: this pivotal year for him.
• 49:05
Speaker 4: Well, we saw a really intense, athletic, smart player in
• 49:10
Speaker 4: college Nicolauld play safety, do a lot of different things,
• 49:14
Speaker 4: and then you saw a lot of his dad and him,
• 49:16
Speaker 4: you know, very intense player, great tackle. I think he's
• 49:19
Speaker 4: one of the better tacklers maybe in the you know,
• 49:23
Speaker 4: I don't want to throw out the history of the
• 49:25
Speaker 4: NFL at from that position, from that position, just just
• 49:30
Speaker 4: so reliable, just super super super reliable, great guy too,
• 49:35
Speaker 4: So very fortunate we have him.
• 49:38
Speaker 1: Okay, so we've done the football. Now we have to
• 49:41
Speaker 1: go off the field a little bit. Everyone's talking about
• 49:44
Speaker 1: Taylor Swift. I know you are a father of three. Correct,
• 49:50
Speaker 1: did did Taylor swift sensation hit your home before there
• 49:53
Speaker 1: was a crossover with Travis Kelsey or were you already
• 49:56
Speaker 1: affected by Taylor Swift this summer when she took over
• 49:59
Speaker 1: America for every person ages ten to twenty and maybe
• 50:03
Speaker 1: now beyond that, I think it's stretchedway beyond that. Have
• 50:06
Speaker 1: you been swifty? Were you a swifty? Did you know
• 50:08
Speaker 1: of Swift before she took the league by storm?
• 50:11
Speaker 4: So she played here in Tampa and I have a uh,
• 50:17
Speaker 4: you know, my wife has a suite to the games, now,
• 50:21
Speaker 4: I guess. And so with that suite, you're going to
• 50:24
Speaker 4: use it for anything that's at Raymond James.
• 50:27
  Speaker 1: And is it year round? I don't. I don't know
• 50:29
Speaker 1: this stuff. This is stuff that we do.
• 50:30
  Speaker 4: We do.
• 50:31
  Speaker 1: It's your owner.
• 50:32
Speaker 4: Owners are very very very good to us. So and
• 50:37
  Speaker 4: so she had three nights and I didn't. I didn't
• 50:40
Speaker 4: get to go to one. And it was packed twenty
• 50:44
Speaker 4: people in it every night. I joke around, I could
• 50:47
Speaker 4: have made millions of dollars selling that sweet. I would
• 50:50
Speaker 4: have gotten fired for doing that. But but so we
• 50:54
Speaker 4: had people from all over the country coming.
• 50:56
Speaker 1: Uh, you know, friends, family are like just people knew
• 50:59
Speaker 1: that the Lights have a sweet and.
• 51:01
Speaker 4: Their family all Blair's friends and you know our my friends,
• 51:04
Speaker 4: my family and and my daughter and Blair went all
• 51:09
Speaker 4: three nights I think. And anyway, so yes, it's Taylor
• 51:13
Speaker 4: Swift has been talked about in our family for quite
• 51:15
Speaker 4: a while. So but recently when before the you know,
• 51:21
Speaker 4: it came out that Kelsey, there was the rumors.
• 51:23
Speaker 1: We don't know what they are, whatever it is, Well,
• 51:25
  Speaker 1: there was rumors.
• 51:26
Speaker 4: For a little while before she showed up at the
• 51:28
Speaker 4: at the first game there last week. I asked my daughter,
• 51:32
Speaker 4: I said, hey, did you hear that you know, Taylor
• 51:34
Speaker 4: Swift and Travis Kelsey might be a thing. And she said, Dad,
• 51:37
Speaker 4: stay out of her private life. Would you want someone
• 51:42
Speaker 4: talking about your private life?
• 51:44
Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, how old is your daughter?
• 51:47
  Speaker 1: What's her name?
• 51:47
Speaker 4: And how old is she? Zoe? She's Twelve's just defending
• 51:52
Speaker 4: Taylor Swift to the end of the day. So I said, well,
• 51:55
Speaker 4: I think you and your friends would talk about you
• 51:57
  Speaker 4: because that's different. That's different.
• 51:59
Speaker 1: That's dad. That is so good. Twelve years old, number
• 52:04
Speaker 1: one story everywhere. NBC shot to it ten times. That's
• 52:07
Speaker 1: not an exaggeration. But Zoe is defending the private life
• 52:10
Speaker 1: of Taylor Swift and Dad, why don't you back off?
• 52:13
Speaker 4: So hey, I know better now we're not talking about
• 52:16
  Speaker 4: our private life.
• 52:17
Speaker 1: I love that. So good your career. We've done the
• 52:22
Speaker 1: story time with you on Good Morning Football. But for
• 52:24
Speaker 1: the listeners of this podcast, you said you mentioned seven
• 52:27
Speaker 1: years with the Patriots. Who are some of the colleagues
• 52:30
Speaker 1: you had. If you were to look around the league
• 52:32
Speaker 1: now and say, well, this guy's there, this guy's there,
• 52:34
Speaker 1: obviously Belichick is at the top of that that family tree.
• 52:38
Speaker 1: But when you look around and it doesn't have to
• 52:40
Speaker 1: be current guys, could be former guys too. Who are
• 52:42
Speaker 1: some of the people that you were rubbing elbows with
• 52:45
Speaker 1: and you know, grunting it out as a as a
• 52:47
Speaker 1: scout at the lowest level than moving your way up
• 52:49
Speaker 1: at that Patriots Franchise's.
• 52:51
Speaker 4: There's a lot, you know, at the Patriots, we had
• 52:56
Speaker 4: the scouting assistant was could have been anything.
• 53:00
Speaker 1: That that track Coot did the job in tail just.
• 53:04
Speaker 4: Getting coffee and making copies, you know, the whole thing.
• 53:08
  Speaker 4: And I wasn't a scouting assistant there. I started off
• 53:12
Speaker 4: with the Dolphins as a scout assistant. By the time
• 53:14
Speaker 4: I got to the Patriots, I was an area of scout.
• 53:15
Speaker 4: But we would still work together closely with the scouting assistants.
• 53:19
Speaker 4: You had Josh McDaniels who went on to become you know,
• 53:22
Speaker 4: obviously he's the head coach of the Raiders right now,
• 53:24
Speaker 4: Nick Cassario, who is now you know, GM of the Texans.
• 53:29
Speaker 4: We had Matt Russell there. I mean I could go
• 53:32
Speaker 4: on and on. There's Mike Disner was a scouting assistant
• 53:35
Speaker 4: now the CEO running the Lions, running the Lions. So
• 53:39
Speaker 4: and then I was fortunate to work for the Eagles
• 53:41
Speaker 4: where we had you know, worked alongside Howie Roseman and
• 53:44
Speaker 4: Ryan Grigson, and I mean we had there's quite a
• 53:48
Speaker 4: few very talented young people at that time.
• 53:52
Speaker 1: And and the Belichick relationship obviously was was strong, and
• 53:56
Speaker 1: you went on did your thing in Arizona, then eventually
• 53:59
Speaker 1: got to the Buccaneers as the GM Belichick as you
• 54:03
Speaker 1: look at the history of the game, obviously as dude
• 54:05
Speaker 1: as one of the greatest head coaches of all time.
• 54:08
Speaker 1: In recent weeks, people are kind of knocked some of
• 54:10
Speaker 1: the player personnels, but when you were on the player
• 54:13
Speaker 1: personnel side, Belichick was pretty much a savant with that
• 54:16
  Speaker 1: stuff too, right.
• 54:16
Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, I've learned so much from him. He's He's incredible.
• 54:20
Speaker 4: It's I wish people, I mean, they have an idea
• 54:23
Speaker 4: that he's pretty damn good. I mean, he is best
• 54:27
Speaker 4: of all time. But if they were inside the walls
• 54:30
Speaker 4: there on a for as long as a lot of
• 54:32
Speaker 4: us have worked with them, it would it would blow
• 54:34
Speaker 4: their mind just the detail that he has just with
• 54:38
Speaker 4: everything that he does.
• 54:40
Speaker 1: Was there a particular story or memory you have if
• 54:42
  Speaker 1: you're at a family event or you're at a dinner
• 54:44
Speaker 1: and someone says, give me a good Belichick story, what's
• 54:46
Speaker 1: the one you go to?
• 54:47
Speaker 4: You know, I was just actually talking about this with
• 54:50
Speaker 4: with my wife. So one time. You have a lot
• 54:54
Speaker 4: of conversations with Bill when you work with him, but
• 54:56
Speaker 4: there's those one personal ones that you remember. And had
• 55:01
Speaker 4: me in his office. It was at the time I
• 55:03
Speaker 4: was interviewing with the Bears to be the general manager.
• 55:07
Speaker 4: This is twenty eleven. So I was going in to
• 55:09
Speaker 4: be for an interview and he was talking to me,
• 55:12
Speaker 4: kind of prepping me a little bit, and he said,
• 55:14
Speaker 4: you know, when you get a general manager's job at
• 55:17
Speaker 4: some point, which you will, you're gonna think you haven't
• 55:20
Speaker 4: made You think you're making a lot of money, and
• 55:23
Speaker 4: you're set, he could. But then all of a sudden,
• 55:26
Speaker 4: you're gonna get a call from your wife that she
• 55:28
Speaker 4: needs new window treatments, and you don't realize how much
• 55:32
Speaker 4: window treatments cost. Okay, and then so the money isn't
• 55:36
Speaker 4: it's not as big as you expect it to be
• 55:39
Speaker 4: because everything that everything else goes up too. And then
• 55:43
Speaker 4: we get the job here in Tampa and we get
• 55:46
Speaker 4: our house and then I get a text from my wife, Hey,
• 55:49
Speaker 4: you're going to see something go through the American Express.
• 55:52
Speaker 4: I got window treatments.
• 55:55
Speaker 1: Work for the example is exactly exactly what happened. Yeah,
• 56:00
Speaker 1: that is so good. I love that. What about the
• 56:02
Speaker 1: same for Brady? Someone says, give me your best Brady story.
• 56:05
Speaker 1: Is it you was at the parade him throwing a
• 56:07
Speaker 1: Lombardi or is there a story that we might not know?
• 56:10
Speaker 4: Well, so the whole time. The day that we signed him,
• 56:14
Speaker 4: I called him and said, because we're not COVID so
• 56:17
Speaker 4: we couldn't have him here. But I said, hey, there's
• 56:19
Speaker 4: one thing I need you to that you don't know
• 56:21
Speaker 4: about me. Is I'm a better beer chugger than you are.
• 56:25
Speaker 4: I'm totally out. Ever since I was a young age,
• 56:28
Speaker 4: can chuck a beer. I can check a beer beer.
• 56:32
Speaker 4: Never met somebody that could chuck one faster? And he
• 56:34
Speaker 4: goes no, he said, no, I got you. I swear
• 56:37
Speaker 4: to God, I'm better than you. He said, all right,
• 56:39
Speaker 4: if we win the Super Bowl, let's have a chug off.
• 56:41
Speaker 4: So we were gonna have this whole thing. It was
• 56:44
Speaker 4: gonna be sponsored by a beer, certain sponsor and all
• 56:47
Speaker 4: that stuff. And he backed out. He backed out, and
• 56:50
Speaker 4: I said, he goes, well, I was afraid to lose it.
• 56:53
Speaker 1: Yes, he doesn't want to lose.
• 56:55
Speaker 4: He didn't want to lose Tom Brady.
• 56:58
Speaker 1: So we'll give you the win there with the technicality
• 57:00
Speaker 1: that it never happened. Okay, that's fine. I texted you
• 57:04
Speaker 1: a lot, and it's never really about the football stuff
• 57:07
Speaker 1: so much. It's more just about family and how everything's going.
• 57:09
Speaker 1: And I've known you for a long time. I also
• 57:12
Speaker 1: know you are very very particular on game day. Players
• 57:17
Speaker 1: of course, lay out their clothes, what they're gonna wear,
• 57:19
Speaker 1: they do a prayer, they do their own pre game retation.
• 57:22
Speaker 1: A general manager on game day, you have your superstitions.
• 57:25
Speaker 1: Can you share with the listeners and the viewers at
• 57:28
Speaker 1: home the Jason like game day experience?
• 57:30
Speaker 4: Now, they're stupid, they're stupid. First of all, I know superstitions.
• 57:34
  Speaker 4: They're stupid. It's uh. But you know, I have a
• 57:38
Speaker 4: certain pair of shoes that kind of have to wear
• 57:40
Speaker 4: that like this. These parents had something to do with
• 57:43
Speaker 4: that last win. You know, it's just stupid, nort It's
• 57:52
Speaker 4: gotta be a new pair every year. You kind of
• 57:54
Speaker 4: retire the other ones. Yeah, and then so when we're
• 57:59
Speaker 4: when I pull so when I come to the game,
• 58:01
Speaker 4: they have a spot for the head coach, the general
• 58:02
Speaker 4: manager and all the owners under the stadium. And I
• 58:05
Speaker 4: can't have a dirty car under the stadium because people
• 58:08
Speaker 4: are walking by it. So I have to go to
• 58:09
Speaker 4: a certain car wash on the way. Then I have
• 58:13
Speaker 4: to stop at the wah wah and you know what
• 58:15
Speaker 4: a wa Tampa floor several wah wahs.
• 58:18
Speaker 1: Now, really, I thought that was just a Philly thing.
• 58:20
  Speaker 4: No, there's there's one here. I have to get a
• 58:22
Speaker 4: certain I have to get a diet of half and
• 58:25
Speaker 4: half iced tea, lemonade, and I have to have this
• 58:30
Speaker 4: eggs this sizzley sandwich, I mean, and then it's like
• 58:34
Speaker 4: goes on and on. So it's I have a lot
• 58:36
  Speaker 4: of go on.
• 58:38
Speaker 1: I thought, more. Okay, so you go from the shoes
• 58:40
Speaker 1: to the car. Then when you when you get to
• 58:42
Speaker 1: the stadium, what's the routine? Like, I do you do
• 58:45
Speaker 1: one lap? Do you listen to a certain song? Like
• 58:47
Speaker 1: where are we at?
• 58:47
  Speaker 5: I do?
• 58:48
Speaker 4: I go through lap, through the locker room, Then I
• 58:50
Speaker 4: go sit in my wife's sweep for a little bit
• 58:52
Speaker 4: and watch the pregame show. And then I go back
• 58:54
Speaker 4: down to the field and do the whole thing. But
• 58:56
Speaker 4: the biggest one I've left out I've omitted here is
• 58:59
Speaker 4: the week of the game. I have to at least
• 59:02
Speaker 4: one night on the way home, stop at this dive
• 59:05
Speaker 4: bar it's called the press box, and I have to
• 59:08
Speaker 4: play one round of golden tea golf, just with let's
• 59:13
Speaker 4: go with with a few of my buddies that are
• 59:15
Speaker 4: always in there, and I have to play one round
• 59:18
Speaker 4: of golden tea golf. Otherwise the whole week goes to
• 59:21
  Speaker 4: So that's.
• 59:22
Speaker 1: Do you have the high score you?
• 59:24
Speaker 4: Oh no, I'm constantly trying. I have won one week,
• 59:27
Speaker 4: that was it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 59:30
Speaker 1: So it's called the press box. And if you're a
• 59:33
Speaker 1: Buccaneers fan looking to kind of bend the ear of
• 59:35
Speaker 1: the general manager, your best bet is to just go
• 59:38
Speaker 1: to the press box Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. You're
• 59:41
Speaker 1: one in five chance you're going to see Jason Knight.
• 59:44
Speaker 4: It's not long either. It won't be long. It's just
• 59:46
Speaker 4: one round of golden tea.
• 59:48
Speaker 1: One round gold Are the wings good at the press phenomenal? Phenomenal,
• 59:51
Speaker 1: phenomen what a commercial?
• 59:53
Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I won't get anything there though, by the way,
• 59:57
Speaker 4: I've mentioned this before, Walter the owner has never given
• 1:00:00
Speaker 4: me a free beer.
• 1:00:02
Speaker 1: And I assume you're keeping the press box open with
• 1:00:04
Speaker 1: that frequency before we close. It's so early, it's like
• 1:00:10
Speaker 1: it's early bye week. It kind of started off the
• 1:00:12
Speaker 1: podcast with it, but like it is one of the
• 1:00:15
Speaker 1: stories of the league that here the Bucks are this
• 1:00:17
Speaker 1: team that some people peg to be in a total
• 1:00:19
Speaker 1: rebuild and yet top of the division, feeling good, relatively healthy.
• 1:00:26
Speaker 1: What's the state of the nation here as we head
• 1:00:28
Speaker 1: towards the buy and you get one of these brief
• 1:00:29
Speaker 1: weekends off and then you hit the road and you
• 1:00:31
Speaker 1: guys have to get back in business. You're wearing the
• 1:00:33
Speaker 1: creamsicles obviously when you first play the Lions when you
• 1:00:35
Speaker 1: get back, which is so cool. But then it's a
• 1:00:38
Speaker 1: long stretch and it's a long season. But can you
• 1:00:40
Speaker 1: take a moment to just enjoy this thing?
• 1:00:42
Speaker 4: I mean, I'd be lying if I said no. Yeah,
• 1:00:45
Speaker 4: of course, and I mean there's nothing better and going
• 1:00:47
Speaker 4: into a buy after you won, so yeah, I got
• 1:00:52
Speaker 4: to be honest with you usually have the twenty four
• 1:00:53
Speaker 4: hour rule, but if you're going to the bye week,
• 1:00:55
Speaker 4: you can have a few extra days, so it's but
• 1:00:57
Speaker 4: it's one game at a time. After this, I mean,
• 1:00:59
Speaker 4: we haven't won anything yet, so it's but feeling good
• 1:01:02
Speaker 4: about where we're at. Feel like we're going to be
• 1:01:04
Speaker 4: pretty healthy coming out.
• 1:01:05
Speaker 1: Can I tell you something. When I was a kid,
• 1:01:07
Speaker 1: my dad and I used to do this cool tradition
• 1:01:10
Speaker 1: where like every football season, I was allowed to buy
• 1:01:13
Speaker 1: a new jersey. And this is back in the eighties
• 1:01:16
Speaker 1: and the nineties where it wasn't like you just go
• 1:01:18
Speaker 1: on fanatics dot Com and pick any player and you could.
• 1:01:21
Speaker 1: It would be a thing you'd have to go in
• 1:01:23
Speaker 1: our mall. It was a place called going to the Game,
• 1:01:25
Speaker 1: and it was like a you know, like a Champs
• 1:01:27
Speaker 1: or one of these stores. It was the Freehold Raceway Mall, Freehold,
• 1:01:30
Speaker 1: New Jersey, and it was the ninety seven season, I
• 1:01:34
Speaker 1: want to say, maybe ninety sixties, and it was the
• 1:01:36
Speaker 1: year where Warren Sap and Derek Brooks were both drafted,
• 1:01:39
Speaker 1: so I might be even it might be man longer
• 1:01:41
Speaker 1: for that. And in going to the game, they had
• 1:01:43
Speaker 1: a creamsicle You're gonna love this player creamsicle Hardy Nickerson jersey.
• 1:01:48
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, And I bought that jersey as my jersey
• 1:01:51
Speaker 1: that year, and I would wear that to school every Monday,
• 1:01:54
Speaker 1: even though the Buccaneers were not great that season. And
• 1:01:57
Speaker 1: this is before they went to the Pewter and you
• 1:01:59
Speaker 1: had this like slick cool jersey and the creamsicle was
• 1:02:02
Speaker 1: the jersey and I would get mocked for it because
• 1:02:04
Speaker 1: the Bucks weren't great, But I love that gle you
• 1:02:07
Speaker 1: guys warm. When Josh Freeman was the quarterback for a
• 1:02:09
Speaker 1: couple of Coffee there, I remember they had the they
• 1:02:11
Speaker 1: would do the throwbacks, it's coming back. Does the creamsicle
• 1:02:15
Speaker 1: jersey mean anything to you as it predated your time?
• 1:02:19
Speaker 1: And do you realize like what nostalgia comes along with
• 1:02:22
Speaker 1: that creamsicle jersey and that logo of the pirate with
• 1:02:26
Speaker 1: the with the eye patch and the whole deal creamsicles?
• 1:02:30
Speaker 1: Am I making too big of a deal here going
• 1:02:32
  Speaker 1: down memory?
• 1:02:32
Speaker 4: L No, not at all? Are you kidding me? This
• 1:02:34
Speaker 4: is uh, we've been looking forward to this forever. I mean,
• 1:02:38
Speaker 4: we've got creamsicle stuff coming out of our ears at
• 1:02:41
Speaker 4: our house right now, and it's uh is that right? Oh? Yeah? Everybody?
• 1:02:45
Speaker 1: What's the what's the play? Because like Doug Williams was
• 1:02:47
Speaker 1: wearing the Creamsicles in seventy nine and Leroy Salmon. But like,
• 1:02:49
Speaker 1: who's the player when you think of the Creamsicle Bucks,
• 1:02:51
  Speaker 1: who's the player.
• 1:02:52
Speaker 4: That you think? Yeah? So, I mean, yeah, here we go.
• 1:02:57
  Speaker 4: It's yeah, it's it's super exciting. It's gonna be a
• 1:02:59
Speaker 4: lot of fun. It's gonna be it's gonna be awesome.
• 1:03:02
Speaker 1: Okay, too much for me. I think I want to
• 1:03:04
Speaker 1: go down like Eric Rhett and start talking about all
• 1:03:07
Speaker 1: these guys and Trent Dilferd. But you're not looking to
• 1:03:09
Speaker 1: We're living in the current, Peter, not in the past.
• 1:03:11
  Speaker 4: Let's go.
• 1:03:12
Speaker 1: That's it. I might want a Vita Vea throwback I got.
• 1:03:16
Speaker 1: I might need a Vitavea creamsicle and rocking on Good
• 1:03:18
Speaker 1: Morning Football. Who can I talk to at the Bucks
• 1:03:20
Speaker 1: to get one of those mates? Do you have any
• 1:03:21
Speaker 1: hookups or no? Is Walter at the bar able to
• 1:03:23
  Speaker 1: hook me up? I don't.
• 1:03:24
Speaker 4: We'll see what we can do here.
• 1:03:26
Speaker 1: Walter at the press box and I are gonna be
• 1:03:28
Speaker 1: the only two Vita Vea Creamsicle jersey. Whereas, uh, Jason Light,
• 1:03:31
Speaker 1: I have taken way too much of your time during
• 1:03:33
Speaker 1: the season. A general manager, what you guys have built
• 1:03:36
Speaker 1: as a collective in that front office is nothing short
• 1:03:39
Speaker 1: of incredible. The Buccaneers are one of the most consistent
• 1:03:42
Speaker 1: teams in the NFL, and you guys just churn out
• 1:03:44
Speaker 1: draft picks that are playing on Sundays with very few
• 1:03:46
Speaker 1: bus and very few failures. I appreciate your time, dude.
• 1:03:49
Speaker 1: Good luck the rest of the way.
• 1:03:50
  Speaker 4: I appreciate it.
• 1:03:52
Speaker 1: Have fun as always, Now we will, Thanks dude. That's
• 1:03:56
Speaker 1: Jason Light. Tambay Buccaneers their bye week and they come
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: back there we're in creamsicles playing the Lions. Thanks Jason.
• 1:04:09
  Speaker 1: I love Jason Light. I mean, that's a great inview.
• 1:04:12
Speaker 1: That's what we want to do with this podcast. We
• 1:04:13
Speaker 1: want to get an opportunity to speak to the guys
• 1:04:15
Speaker 1: who make the decisions and when you could tell stories
• 1:04:18
Speaker 1: about Belichick, Brady right up to Baker Mayfield. But also
• 1:04:20
Speaker 1: ten years is the gm is. A lot of these
• 1:04:22
Speaker 1: guys have two years, three years to do it. They
• 1:04:24
Speaker 1: probably get two quarterbacks. This is a guy who you know,
• 1:04:27
Speaker 1: went from Jamis to the Brady to now Baker Mayfield
• 1:04:33
Speaker 1: and they're winning. So Aaron, I love that stuff.
• 1:04:36
  Speaker 3: Yeah, I also don't feel like I get a ton
• 1:04:39
Speaker 3: of You don't often hear a GM just flat out
• 1:04:42
Speaker 3: say God, I hate the Saints, and so that was
• 1:04:45
Speaker 3: the most important win to me, was beating the Saints.
• 1:04:48
Speaker 1: How candid it was great. There was something to that
• 1:04:50
Speaker 1: interview where I felt like, you know, Bye Week is
• 1:04:52
Speaker 1: a little different than if you start off. I mean,
• 1:04:54
Speaker 1: we got them at the perfect time. Yeah, yeah, three
• 1:04:56
Speaker 1: and one. Bye Week is like if you're in a circle,
• 1:04:59
Speaker 1: like an in season GM guest, that's it. I doubt
• 1:05:01
Speaker 1: we'll get many others because these guys are so tight
• 1:05:05
Speaker 1: lipped and such on eggshells for week to week. But
• 1:05:07
Speaker 1: I knew this was the sweet spot, so we got
• 1:05:08
Speaker 1: Jason Knight. I started the podcast talking about my amazing Sunday,
• 1:05:13
Speaker 1: but I have to close the loop on something we
• 1:05:15
Speaker 1: mentioned last week. I was invited as a special guest
• 1:05:20
Speaker 1: to a Broadway show last Thursday night, and Aaron, as
• 1:05:25
Speaker 1: my fellow fan of the Great White Way, my fellow
• 1:05:28
Speaker 1: Thespian supporter, I went. I brought my lovely wife, Erica,
• 1:05:34
Speaker 1: and we went to the Melissa Etheridge one woman show
• 1:05:38
Speaker 1: titled My Window. It premiered Thursday night. It is in
• 1:05:43
Speaker 1: the middle of Times Square and my review is thus
• 1:05:48
Speaker 1: it was awesome. I loved it. Basically Melissa, whose life
• 1:05:51
  Speaker 1: I don't really know all the details too. She's a
• 1:05:53
Speaker 1: fan of the Chiefs. She's been on Good Morning Football
• 1:05:56
Speaker 1: about a dozen times. She sends me a direct message says,
• 1:05:59
Speaker 1: I have a Broadway show coming out. I knew she
• 1:06:01
Speaker 1: was off Broadway for a little bit telling my life story.
• 1:06:05
Speaker 1: Do you and your wife want to come? I said yes,
• 1:06:08
Speaker 1: and I will be honest. Thursday night football, well, ninety
• 1:06:11
Speaker 1: nine percent of the country was watching the first half
• 1:06:13
Speaker 1: of Alliance Packers wand I was busy singing I'm the
• 1:06:19
Speaker 1: only one. Yeah, I mean it was amazing. So Etherge
• 1:06:23
Speaker 1: comes out and this is my recommendation to anybody coming
• 1:06:25
Speaker 1: through New York City or they have it. It's a
• 1:06:28
Speaker 1: rock concert, but it's also like her personal story, and
• 1:06:30
Speaker 1: it tells the story. She's a small town girl from
• 1:06:33
Speaker 1: a small town in Kansas and her only dream ever
• 1:06:37
Speaker 1: was to play guitar and be in a rock band.
• 1:06:39
Speaker 1: And back then when she was born in the sixties,
• 1:06:41
Speaker 1: that was not common for a female to do that.
• 1:06:43
Speaker 1: By the age of twelve, Melissa was playing in dive
• 1:06:47
Speaker 1: bars and parts of bands with thirty and forty year olds,
• 1:06:51
Speaker 1: she was this phenom on the guitar. She comes out
• 1:06:55
Speaker 1: of the closet and her mother says she can't agree
• 1:06:59
Speaker 1: with that decision, and that severs or really hampers her
• 1:07:02
Speaker 1: relationship with her mother. But her father, who has a
• 1:07:04
Speaker 1: ton of grace, says, I've got your back no matter
• 1:07:07
Speaker 1: what you just as long as you're happy. She moves
• 1:07:09
Speaker 1: to Los Angeles, where she chases this dream to be
• 1:07:14
Speaker 1: a rock star, which she says, it's the same dream
• 1:07:18
Speaker 1: that ten thousand other people who moved to Los Angeles has,
• 1:07:20
Speaker 1: And sure enough she ends up playing bars and gets
• 1:07:24
Speaker 1: one gig after another to finally be able to perform
• 1:07:26
Speaker 1: as an act. And she falls in love with a
• 1:07:30
Speaker 1: very famous Hollywood actor. You can google this. She doesn't
• 1:07:33
Speaker 1: mention it in the show. Of Course, I did a
• 1:07:36
Speaker 1: very famous Hollywood actor's wife, and they have this torrid romance.
• 1:07:42
Speaker 1: And this woman leaves a very famous Hollywood actor for
• 1:07:45
Speaker 1: Melissa Etheridge, and they live in the Hollywood Hills together
• 1:07:47
Speaker 1: and they start this life together, and then sure enough
• 1:07:50
Speaker 1: soon comes great stardom, and she has this really poignant
• 1:07:54
Speaker 1: moment where she's like, all I ever wanted to be
• 1:07:57
Speaker 1: was rich and famous, and then once I got to
• 1:08:00
Speaker 1: that point, I realized that meant nothing, and that fame
• 1:08:05
Speaker 1: and that wealth and all that stuff was pretty hollow
• 1:08:08
Speaker 1: and empty. And I'm on the road three hundred days
• 1:08:10
Speaker 1: out of the year, and I'm doing European tours and
• 1:08:12
Speaker 1: I'm away from my kids. Like she sings songs throughout Aaron,
• 1:08:16
Speaker 1: this is not Broadway dot Com, this is not theater mania,
• 1:08:20
Speaker 1: but my review is a very solid should go see
• 1:08:26
Speaker 1: on the Melissa Ethrid Show. I wouldn't say you need
• 1:08:29
Speaker 1: to fly in for it tomorrow. This isn't gonna be
• 1:08:31
Speaker 1: the craze that is Hamilton. I'm not gonna say that
• 1:08:33
Speaker 1: you must, you know, see it the first week. But
• 1:08:37
Speaker 1: if you want to laugh, cry, dance a little bit
• 1:08:40
Speaker 1: and you know, hear some great music and then just
• 1:08:42
Speaker 1: see it and just a wonderful performance from Melissa, I
• 1:08:46
Speaker 1: would advise going to see my Window on Broadway. Your
• 1:08:50
Speaker 1: thoughts on my you know, Hollywood slash Broadway.
• 1:08:54
Speaker 3: Review, I think you probably could have delivered it a
• 1:08:58
Speaker 3: little better. I think, you know, maybe a little better
• 1:09:00
Speaker 3: lighting next time you do it. Yeah, no, no, I
• 1:09:03
Speaker 3: think I love the theater as well. My parents both
• 1:09:06
Speaker 3: from the theater, and I also love that there has
• 1:09:10
Speaker 3: been this influx with Broadway with these kind of they're
• 1:09:13
Speaker 3: not just the jukebox musical. It's the artist doing the song.
• 1:09:17
Speaker 3: So it's not just come see us do a bunch
• 1:09:21
Speaker 3: of Michael Jackson songs, which I'm sure is in I
• 1:09:23
  Speaker 3: haven't seen.
• 1:09:23
Speaker 1: Apparently that show is awesome.
• 1:09:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I haven't seen it.
• 1:09:25
Speaker 1: But you want to get the football link to this.
• 1:09:27
Speaker 1: The GM of the Seahawks, John Schneider, is a friend
• 1:09:30
Speaker 1: and he texted me on Thursday that his wife, Tracy's
• 1:09:33
Speaker 1: in town. He's like, what's a good restaurant in the
• 1:09:35
Speaker 1: theater district? She's seeing the MJ Show, And sure enough,
• 1:09:39
Speaker 1: we want to do two reviews. I want to she
• 1:09:41
Speaker 1: freaking loved it and the MJ Show, which is a
• 1:09:43
Speaker 1: story about Michael Jackson but obviously it's not him singing
• 1:09:46
Speaker 1: no Longer with Us, but it's the Michael Jackson story
• 1:09:49
Speaker 1: through that. But apparently that's awesome and worth seeing. But
