Speaker 1: Chapter fifteen, in which the bag of bank notes disgorgeous
• 0:04
Speaker 1: some thousands of pounds more. The train entered the station,
• 0:11
Speaker 1: and Passepartout, jumping out first, was followed by mister Fogg,
• 0:15
Speaker 1: who assisted his fair companion to descend. Phileas Fogg intended
• 0:20
Speaker 1: to proceed at once to the Hong Kong steamer in
• 0:23
Speaker 1: order to get Aouda comfortably settled for the voyage. He
• 0:27
Speaker 1: was unwilling to leave her while they were still on
• 0:29
Speaker 1: dangerous ground. Just as he was leaving the station, a
• 0:33
Speaker 1: policeman came up to him and said, mister Phileas Fogg,
• 0:38
Speaker 1: I am he is this man your servant, added the policeman,
• 0:44
Speaker 1: pointing to Passepartout, Yes, be so good both of you
• 0:49
Speaker 1: as to follow me. Mister Fogg betrayed no surprise whatever.
• 0:54
Speaker 1: The policeman was a representative of the law, and law
• 0:58
Speaker 1: is sacred to an Englishman. Passepartout tried to reason about
• 1:02
Speaker 1: the matter, but the policeman tapped him with his stick,
• 1:05
Speaker 1: and mister Fogg made him a signal to obey. May
• 1:09
Speaker 1: this young lady go with us, asked he she may,
• 1:14
Speaker 1: replied the policeman mister Fogg. Aouda and Passepartout were conducted
• 1:19
Speaker 1: in a palkigawi, a sort of four wheeled carriage drawn
• 1:23
Speaker 1: by two horses, in which they took their places and
• 1:26
Speaker 1: were driven away. No one spoke during the twenty minutes
• 1:30
Speaker 1: which elapsed before they reached their destination. They first passed
• 1:34
Speaker 1: through the blacktown, with its narrow streets, its miserable, dirty huts,
• 1:39
Speaker 1: and squalid population, then through the European town, which presented
• 1:44
Speaker 1: a relief in its bright brick mansions, shaded by cocoa
• 1:48
Speaker 1: nut trees and bristling with masts, where, although it was
• 1:52
Speaker 1: early morning, elegantly dressed horsemen and handsome equipages were passing
• 1:57
Speaker 1: back and forth. The carrie stopped before a modest looking house,
• 2:02
Speaker 1: which however, did not have the appearance of a private mansion.
• 2:06
Speaker 1: The policeman, having requested his prisoners for so truly they
• 2:10
Speaker 1: might be called to descend, conducted them into a room
• 2:14
Speaker 1: with barred windows, and said you will appear before Judge
• 2:18
Speaker 1: Obadiah at half past eight. He then retired and closed
• 2:22
Speaker 1: the door. Why we are prisoners, exclaimed Passepartout, falling into
• 2:28
Speaker 1: a chair. Aouda with an emotion she tried to conceal
• 2:33
Speaker 1: said to mister Fogg, Sir, you must leave me to
• 2:36
Speaker 1: my fate. It is on my account that you receive
• 2:39
Speaker 1: this treatment. It is for having saved me. Phileas Fogg
• 2:44
Speaker 1: contented himself with saying that it was impossible, it was
• 2:48
Speaker 1: quite unlikely that he should be arrested for preventing a settee.
• 2:52
Speaker 1: The complainants would not dare present themselves with such a charge.
• 2:56
Speaker 1: There was some mistake. Moreover, he would not, in any
• 3:00
Speaker 1: event abandoned Aouda, but would escort her to Hong Kong.
• 3:05
Speaker 1: But the steamer leaves at noon, observed Passepartout nervously. We
• 3:11
Speaker 1: shall be on board by noon, replied his master placidly.
• 3:16
Speaker 1: It was said so positively that Passepartout could not help
• 3:20
Speaker 1: muttering to himself, parbleu, that's certain before noon we shall
• 3:25
Speaker 1: be on board. But he was by no means reassured.
• 3:30
Speaker 1: At half past eight, the door opened, The policeman appeared, and,
• 3:34
Speaker 1: requesting them to follow him, led the way to an
• 3:37
Speaker 1: adjoining hall. It was evidently a court room, and a
• 3:40
Speaker 1: crowd of Europeans and natives already occupied the rear of
• 3:43
Speaker 1: the apartment. Mister Fogg and his two companions took their
• 3:48
Speaker 1: places on a bench opposite the desks of the magistrate
• 3:51
Speaker 1: and his clerk. Immediately after, Judge Obadiah, a fat round man,
• 3:57
Speaker 1: followed by the clerk, entered seated to take down a
• 4:01
Speaker 1: wig which was hanging on a nail, and put it
• 4:03
Speaker 1: hurriedly on his head. The first case said. He then,
• 4:08
Speaker 1: putting his hand to his head, he exclaimed, he this
• 4:11
Speaker 1: is not my wig. Know your worship, returned the clerk,
• 4:16
Speaker 1: It is mine, my dear mister Oysterpuff. How can a
• 4:20
Speaker 1: judge give a wise sentence in a clerk's wig? The
• 4:23
Speaker 1: whigs were exchanged. Passepartout was getting nervous for the hands
• 4:28
Speaker 1: on the face of the big clock over. The judge
• 4:30
Speaker 1: seemed to go around with terrible rapidity, the first case
• 4:36
Speaker 1: repeated Judge Obadiah. Phileas Fogg demanded, Oysterpuff. I am here,
• 4:44
Speaker 1: replied mister Fogg. Passepartout Braison, responded Passepartout Good, said the judge,
• 4:54
Speaker 1: you have been looked for prisoners for two days on
• 4:57
Speaker 1: the trains from Bombay. But of what are we accused,
• 5:01
Speaker 1: asked Passepartout, impatiently, you are about to be informed. I
• 5:07
Speaker 1: am an English subject, Sir said mister Fogg, and I
• 5:11
Speaker 1: have the right. Have you been ill treated? Not at all?
• 5:17
Speaker 1: Very well? Let the complainants come in. A door was
• 5:21
Speaker 1: swung open by order of the judge, and three Indian
• 5:24
Speaker 1: priests entered. That's it, muttered Passepartout. These are the rogues
• 5:29
Speaker 1: who are going to burn our young lady. The priest
• 5:33
Speaker 1: took their places in front of the judge, and the
• 5:35
Speaker 1: clerk proceeded to read in a loud voice a complaint
• 5:38
Speaker 1: of sacrilege against Phileas Fogg and his servant, who were
• 5:42
Speaker 1: accused of having violated a place held consecrated by the
• 5:45
Speaker 1: Brahmin religion. You hear the charge, asked the judge. Yes, sir,
• 5:52
Speaker 1: replied mister Fogg, consulting his watch, and I admit it.
• 5:57
Speaker 1: You admit it, I admit it, and I wished to
• 6:01
Speaker 1: hear these priests admit in their turn what they were
• 6:04
Speaker 1: going to do at the Pagoda of Pilagi. The priest
• 6:08
Speaker 1: looked at each other. They did not seem to understand
• 6:11
Speaker 1: what was said. Yes, cried Passepartout warmly, at the Pagoda
• 6:17
Speaker 1: of Pilagi, where they were on the point of burning
• 6:19
Speaker 1: their victim. The judge stared with astonishment, and the priests
• 6:24
Speaker 1: were stupefied. What victim said Judge Obadiah Burn, whom in
• 6:31
Speaker 1: Bombay itself, Bombay, cried Passepartout. Certainly, we're not talking in
• 6:38
Speaker 1: the pagoda of Pilagi, but of the pagoda of Malabar
• 6:42
Speaker 1: Hill at Bombay. And as a proof, added the clerk,
• 6:47
Speaker 1: here are the desecrator's very shoes, what he left behind him.
• 6:52
Speaker 1: Whereupon he placed a pair of shoes on his desk.
• 6:55
Speaker 1: My shoes, cried Passepartout in his surprise, permitting this prudent
• 7:00
Speaker 1: exclamation to escape him. The confusion of master and man,
• 7:05
Speaker 1: who had quite forgotten the affair at Bombay, for which
• 7:08
Speaker 1: they were now detained at Calcutta, may be imagined fixed.
• 7:13
Speaker 1: The detective had foreseen the advantage which Passepartout's escapade gave him, and,
• 7:19
Speaker 1: delaying his departure for twelve hours, had consulted the priests
• 7:23
Speaker 1: of Malabar Hill, knowing that the English authorities dealt very
• 7:27
Speaker 1: severely with this kind of misdemeanor. He promised them a
• 7:31
Speaker 1: goodly sum in damages and sent them forward to Calcutta
• 7:34
Speaker 1: by the next train. Owing to the delay caused by
• 7:38
Speaker 1: the rescue of the young widow, Fix and the priests
• 7:41
Speaker 1: reached the Indian capital before mister Fogg and his servant,
• 7:45
Speaker 1: the magistrates having been already warned by a dispatch to
• 7:48
Speaker 1: arrest them should they arrive. Fix's disappointment when he learned
• 7:52
Speaker 1: that Phileas Fogg had not made his appearance in Calcutta
• 7:56
Speaker 1: may be imagined he made up his mind that the
• 7:59
Speaker 1: robber had stopped somewhere on the route and taken refuge
• 8:02
Speaker 1: in the southern provinces. For twenty four hours, Fix watched
• 8:06
Speaker 1: the station with feverish anxiety. At last, he was rewarded
• 8:10
Speaker 1: by seeing mister Fogg and Passepartout arrive, accompanied by a
• 8:14
Speaker 1: young woman whose presence he was wholly at a loss
• 8:17
Speaker 1: to explain. He hastened for a policeman, and this was
• 8:21
Speaker 1: how the party came to be arrested and brought before
• 8:24
Speaker 1: Judge Obadiah. Had Passepartout been a little less preoccupied, he
• 8:30
Speaker 1: would have espied the detective ensconced in a corner of
• 8:33
Speaker 1: the court room, watching the proceedings with an interest easily understood,
• 8:38
Speaker 1: for the warrant had failed to reach him at Calcutta,
• 8:41
Speaker 1: as it had done at Bombay and Suez. Judge Obadiah
• 8:46
Speaker 1: had unfortunately caught Passepartout's rash exclamation, which the poor fellow
• 8:51
Speaker 1: would have given the world to recall. The facts are admitted,
• 8:56
Speaker 1: asked the judge admitted, replied mister Fogg coldly. Inasmuch resumed
• 9:04
Speaker 1: the Judge, as the English law protects equally and sternly
• 9:08
Speaker 1: the religions of the Indian people, and as the man
• 9:11
Speaker 1: Passepartout has admitted that he violated the sacred pagoda of
• 9:14
Speaker 1: Malabar Hill at Bombay on the twentieth October, I condemned
• 9:19
Speaker 1: the said Passepartout to imprisonment for fifteen days and a
• 9:23
Speaker 1: fine of three hundred pounds. Three hundred pounds, cried Passepartout,
• 9:29
Speaker 1: startled at the largeness of the sum silence, shouted the constable.
• 9:35
Speaker 1: And inasmuch continued the judge, as it is not proved
• 9:39
Speaker 1: that the act was not done by the connivance of
• 9:42
Speaker 1: the master with the servant, and as the master in
• 9:45
Speaker 1: any case must be held responsible for the acts of
• 9:47
Speaker 1: his paid servant, I condemn Phileas Fogg to a week's
• 9:51
Speaker 1: imprisonment and a fine of one hundred and fifty pounds.
• 9:55
Speaker 1: Fix rubbed his hands softly with satisfaction. If Phileas Fogg
• 10:00
Speaker 1: could be detained in Calcutta a week, it would be
• 10:03
Speaker 1: more than time for the warrant to arrive. Passepartout was stupefied.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: This sentence ruined his master, a wager of twenty thousand
• 10:13
Speaker 1: pounds lost, because he, like a precious fool, had gone
• 10:18
Speaker 1: into that abominable pagoda. Phileas Fogg, as self composed as
• 10:24
Speaker 1: if the judgment did not in the least concern him,
• 10:27
Speaker 1: did not even lift his eyebrows while it was being pronounced.
• 10:31
Speaker 1: Just as the clerk was calling the next case, he
• 10:34
Speaker 1: rose and said, I offer bail. You have that right,
• 10:39
Speaker 1: returned the judge. Fix's blood ran cold, but he resumed
• 10:45
Speaker 1: his composure when he heard the judge announce that the
• 10:47
Speaker 1: bail required for each prisoner would be one thousand pounds.
• 10:53
Speaker 1: I will pay it at once, said mister Fogg, taking
• 10:56
Speaker 1: a roll of bank bills from the carpet bag which
• 10:59
Speaker 1: Passepartout had had by him, and placing them on the
• 11:02
Speaker 1: clerk's desk. The sum will be restored to you upon
• 11:05
Speaker 1: your release from prison, said the judge. Meanwhile, you are
• 11:09
Speaker 1: liberated on bail, come, said Phileas Fogg to his servant.
• 11:15
Speaker 1: But let them at least give me back my shoes,
• 11:18
Speaker 1: cried Passepartout angrily. Ah these are pretty dear shoes, he muttered,
• 11:24
Speaker 1: as they were handed to him, more than a thousand
• 11:27
Speaker 1: pounds apiece. Besides, they'd pinch my feet. Mister Fogg, offering
• 11:33
Speaker 1: his arm to Aouda, then departed, followed by the crestfall
• 11:37
Speaker 1: in passepartout. Fix still nourished hopes that the robber would not,
• 11:42
Speaker 1: after all leave the two thousand pounds behind him, but
• 11:46
Speaker 1: would decide to serve out his week in jail, and
• 11:49
Speaker 1: issued forth on mister Fogg's traces. That gentleman took a carriage,
• 11:53
Speaker 1: and the party were soon landed on one of the keys.
• 11:57
Speaker 1: The rangoon was moored half a mile off in the harbor,
• 12:00
Speaker 1: its signal of departure hoisted at the masthead. Eleven o'clock
• 12:05
Speaker 1: was striking. Mister Fogg was an hour in advance of time.
• 12:09
Speaker 1: Fix saw them leave the carriage and push off in
• 12:11
Speaker 1: a boat for the steamer, and stamped his feet with disappointment.
• 12:16
Speaker 1: The rascal is off after all, he exclaimed. Two thousand
• 12:22
Speaker 1: pounds sacrificed. He's as prodigal as a thief. I'll follow
• 12:26
Speaker 1: him to the end of the world if necessary, but
• 12:29
Speaker 1: at the rate he is going on, the stolen money
• 12:31
Speaker 1: will soon be exhausted. The detective was not far wrong
• 12:36
Speaker 1: in making this conjecture, since leaving London, what with traveling expenses, bribes,
• 12:42
Speaker 1: the purchase of the elephant, bales and fines, mister Fogg
• 12:46
Speaker 1: had already spent more than five thousand pounds on the way,
• 12:50
Speaker 1: and the percentage of the sum recovered from the bank
• 12:52
Speaker 1: robber promised to the detectives was rapidly diminishing. End of
• 12:58
  Speaker 1: chapter M
