- 0:00Yeah, I didn't get a chance to thank our
- 0:01fans for Saturday. Um, you know, the
- 0:04environment on on Saturday and Neville
- 0:06was, you know, incredible as always.
- 0:09And, uh, you know, we got another ranked
- 0:11opponent coming in here, you know,
- 0:12tomorrow afternoon. Um, and, you know,
- 0:16man, would love to have another sellout,
- 0:19uh, cuz I know our guys appreciate the
- 0:21hell out of it and so does our staff.
- 0:23So, um, yeah, really good Vanderbilt
- 0:26team coming in. Um, another top 20
- 0:28opponent. Um and you don't get a lot of
- 0:30those on your home floor. So, uh great
- 0:33great opportunity. Um you know, their
- 0:35their analytics are off the charts as
- 0:37far as you know, their number in the
- 0:38net, but also just their efficiencies on
- 0:40offense and defense.
- 0:42Got off to a great start, you know, 16-0
- 0:45and have kind of had some injury bugs.
- 0:47Uh but they've still been able to get
- 0:48some quality wins in that stretch. Um
- 0:51had a great non-conference and, you
- 0:53know, they just got some special players
- 0:55on their team. You know, Tyler Tanner is
- 0:57one of the best point guards in all of
- 0:59college basketball. Um, you know, 18 and
- 1:03five and almost a 3 to1 assist turnover
- 1:05ratio and, uh, leads our league in
- 1:08steals, I think. Um, so just does a
- 1:10little bit of everything for them. And,
- 1:12um, Tyler Nichols probably the best
- 1:13shooter in our league and I think he's
- 1:15like fifth in the country and
- 1:17three-point field goal percentage.
- 1:20Really highowered offense and, you know,
- 1:22they're a very efficient defense as
- 1:23well. So really good team. Um you know
- 1:27it's our 13th quad one game of the year
- 1:29and uh you know this one starts another
- 1:32four out of five stretch of quad one
- 1:33game. So say it again another great
- 1:36opportunity um you know to bounce back
- 1:38and uh you know play a really good
- 1:41Vanderbilt team. So with that take any
- 1:43questions.
- 1:45>> Stephen you said the game Andy has a
- 1:47really unique offense just kind of what
- 1:48stands out about them they take a lot of
- 1:50jumpers. They're not huge but they've
- 1:52been able to score inside and
- 1:54outsideure.
- 1:55>> Yeah, they run spain action like all
- 1:57over the floor. So spain action is a
- 1:59ball screen into a back screen for the
- 2:01screener and um usually in Spain actions
- 2:05you put a shooter as that screener and
- 2:07it makes it really difficult on your
- 2:08defense to try and decide what you want
- 2:10to take away. So, um you know, they they
- 2:13just and they do it all over the floor
- 2:15and they have different sets and uh you
- 2:17know, when um Tanner or Nickel get
- 2:19going, they they run something unique
- 2:21for those guys to try and get them a
- 2:23look too. And um you know, they just run
- 2:27a lot of really good stuff. So, our guys
- 2:29got to be really connected and uh really
- 2:30got to lock into the scouting report to
- 2:32be able to uh you know, cover them.
- 2:40talked about getting more minutes for
- 2:42Yic. Is that pretty tough with the way
- 2:44Kan Murphy's playing right now and the
- 2:46way Sebastian way is playing especially
- 2:47defensively? Any ideas on on how you
- 2:49could do that?
- 2:51>> Yeah, I mean the best thing we could do
- 2:52is maybe slide Seb down to some three
- 2:54and um you know have Philip play some
- 2:56four. So that's probably the the would
- 2:58make the most sense. But you're right,
- 2:59Murf's playing great, Sebastian's
- 3:01playing great. Those are two of our
- 3:02better defenders. So, um, but still got
- 3:04to find a way to get him more than 12
- 3:06minutes out there cuz, you know, he, um,
- 3:08just does so many little things that
- 3:09affect winning and, uh, you know, we got
- 3:11to reward him for that and, um, we got
- 3:13to do a better job in that area.
- 3:15>> You guys ran KO at the one some game.
- 3:19What do you like about that lineup? And
- 3:20is that something you might want to do a
- 3:21little bit more with whenever Todd on
- 3:23the bench?
- 3:24>> Yeah, it was good. Um, you know, KO was
- 3:26was excited about it and, uh, you know,
- 3:28I think it just gives us, you know, a
- 3:31little more um a little more pop at the
- 3:34point when he's in there and cuz he, you
- 3:36know, he obviously can score the ball at
- 3:37a pretty high clip and he's confident at
- 3:40that spot. So, um, you know, and then
- 3:42you can still have Blake or Simon play
- 3:44the two because they have good
- 3:46positional size. So, um, yeah, KO at the
- 3:50one was was good for us offensively and,
- 3:51uh, it gives us a potentially a lineup
- 3:54later in the game if we need to get some
- 3:56more size out there defensively. Um, so
- 3:58it gives us some flexibility there. Um,
- 3:59but, you know, Vanderbilt's a team that
- 4:01presses, so I'm sure they're going to
- 4:02try and, you know, press uh, KO when he
- 4:06does play the one, so got to be prepared
- 4:08for that.
- 4:09You mentioned the Tyler Tanner matchup
- 4:11and and after the game talking about you
- 4:13getting your better players to to be
- 4:15better defenders. I guess this probably
- 4:16isn't a very difficult matchup to get
- 4:18them up for with a guy in the back court
- 4:20like Tanner for for Tahad and for KO to
- 4:23defend.
- 4:24>> Yeah, it wasn't our on the ball defense
- 4:25that I was really speaking about. It was
- 4:27our offthe-ball defense. Uh we were out
- 4:29of position off the ball too many times,
- 4:31especially in ball screens. And if you
- 4:33do that against this team, you're
- 4:34screwed. So, we got to do a great job
- 4:36off the ball of really loading to it and
- 4:39um you know, showing help. Um multiple
- 4:41times in the Alabama game, you know, the
- 4:43ball screen's happening over here and
- 4:45we're guarding a guy in the corner and
- 4:47we're just completely face guard or
- 4:49we're all the way over there because
- 4:50we're worried about him shooting the
- 4:51ball as opposed to loading to it and and
- 4:54offering help and assistance to the guys
- 4:55in the ball screen. So, in the first
- 4:57half, we did a really good job of it
- 4:59because Sebastian was down there and,
- 5:00you know, Sebastian's always in the
- 5:02right spots, which is why he's such a
- 5:04good player. Um, second half, we were
- 5:07not loaded to the ball because Sebastian
- 5:08wasn't in that spot. The rest of our
- 5:10guys have to do a better job of
- 5:12understanding off the ball positioning.
- 5:14Um, our on the ball defense was was
- 5:16actually pretty good. I thought we did a
- 5:18good job. You know, you know that Learon
- 5:20and and Aiden are going to obviously
- 5:22make some tough shots. They're really
- 5:24good players. Like, that's just that's
- 5:25part of it. But when your off the ball
- 5:26positioning was as bad as ours was in
- 5:28the second half, it allows guys like
- 5:29Bettyo to have 12 points. It allows us
- 5:32to have to get in rotations and allow
- 5:34some of their other shooters to make
- 5:35shots. So, it was more of our off the-
- 5:37ball positioning. Um, but you're right,
- 5:39Tanner's going to be a handful because
- 5:40he's one of the quickest, you know,
- 5:43point guards driving downhill in the
- 5:45country. And uh you know he gets down
- 5:47there in transition really quickly and
- 5:50uh you know
- 5:52you could you can guard his right hand
- 5:54as much as you want but he's still got
- 5:55he's like he'll still drive right around
- 5:57you. So our guys got to be in a stance
- 5:58and obviously be ready to sit down and
- 6:00uh you know really guard the yard
- 6:02because he does such a great job of
- 6:03getting to his spots on the floor
- 6:04driving left or right.
- 6:07>> You've been really complimentary of
- 6:08Sebastian today and after game on
- 6:10Saturday uh defensively. How beneficial
- 6:13is that to be able to have a guy that
- 6:14young to rely on? What does that say
- 6:16about him, his development, and how he's
- 6:18performed for you all this season?
- 6:20>> Yeah, it's huge. Um, you I told we went
- 6:23Matt as a team yesterday. I was like, I
- 6:24need more guys to defend like him, you
- 6:27know, if we want to win, if we want to
- 6:28win close games, like we're, you know,
- 6:31we're right or we're right where we need
- 6:32to be in all these games. Um, but it
- 6:35comes down to getting a couple stops
- 6:36late. And if all of you, you know, had
- 6:38the same attention to detail and the
- 6:39same sense of urgency as Sebastian does,
- 6:41like we'd win these games, right? So,
- 6:44uh, it's great having, and it's rare to
- 6:46have a freshman that's that guy you talk
- 6:48about. So, I need my older guys to, uh,
- 6:50you know, and here's the thing, they're
- 6:52all capable of doing it, too. You know
- 6:54what I mean? And we've seen it in in,
- 6:56you know, in games this season. So, we
- 6:58just got to, you know, we just got to
- 6:59lock back in on a couple of the small
- 7:01details of what we're doing defensively.
- 7:03Um, and if we do that, we we'll be fine.
- 7:07MLK last season really stood out for
- 7:09Vandy. He's having a really good year
- 7:10again. What does he bring to them as one
- 7:12of their bigger guys, but a guy go on
- 7:14the floor,
- 7:15>> right? I mean, brings a level of
- 7:16toughness, you know, I think he had 14
- 7:18rebounds against us last year. So, and
- 7:20that was against a team that had, you
- 7:21know, Jai and Dylan and Cheney and some
- 7:23really good bigs. So, he uh was really
- 7:26effective and uh plays really hard and
- 7:29um you know, he can he can make down he
- 7:31can make shots, you know, he can finish
- 7:32around the rim. So, he's he's very
- 7:33versatile. He can defend, moves his feet
- 7:35well. So does a lot of really good
- 7:37things for him and you know they got
- 7:38multiple guys that are like that that
- 7:39just you know are very effective in in
- 7:41what they do and um MLK no exception. He
- 7:44does a great job for him and he brings a
- 7:46lot of value when he's on the floor.
- 7:48>> You mentioned Simon a couple minutes ago
- 7:50I guess. How is he doing? I know that he
- 7:52had that injury earlier in the year and
- 7:53then Abdul as well. Are either of them
- 7:55in position do you think to to
- 7:57contribute any sort of minutes down the
- 7:58stretch of the FCC season? Yeah, we may
- 8:00look at, you know, um inserting Simon
- 8:02and some minutes at the two if if KO is
- 8:04going to play some one. Um so we're
- 8:07still kind of going back and forth on
- 8:09that. And Abdul is still, you know, kind
- 8:11of coming back and like rehabbing his
- 8:13back. And so, you know, we're not going
- 8:15to rush his process because back
- 8:17injuries are are touchy. Um so, you
- 8:21know, he's he's more just uh in the
- 8:24rehab stages still and just trying to
- 8:26get stronger and more comfortable. But I
- 8:28think Simon is a guy that, you know, you
- 8:29could see getting some minutes in in the
- 8:31coming games.
- 8:35>> Three-point defendant this year. You
- 8:37know, teams have had some success
- 8:39against Sh here, especially recently. Is
- 8:41that more of like you were talking about
- 8:42earlier, the offball stuff, just not,
- 8:44you know, fading off too much or, you
- 8:46know, locking in sight more than what
- 8:47you guys are doing on the ball with
- 8:48them.
- 8:50>> Yeah, it's, you know, it's interesting.
- 8:51I uh you know right right before I came
- 8:54down here I'm I clipped every I'm
- 8:56clipping right now every three-point
- 8:58attempt and make in conference through
- 9:0010 games and categorizing them based on
- 9:02where they off of ball screens
- 9:05screens off the ball transition drive
- 9:08draw dishes uh downstream dribble
- 9:10handoffs just all the different ways
- 9:11that people are shooting and getting
- 9:12threes and trying to figure out if
- 9:14there's a pattern as to why people are
- 9:15shooting 39% against us. Um, so part of
- 9:19it is obviously, you know, us trying to
- 9:21be more intentional on being in the gap.
- 9:23So, cuz, you know, the first game of the
- 9:25year, Georgia, they just drove us
- 9:27because we were so spread out and we
- 9:28just we couldn't let that happen. Um,
- 9:30but, you know, at some point we got to
- 9:32make an adjustment, too, because teams
- 9:34are shooting a good percentage against
- 9:35us. And, you know, um, can't keep
- 9:38chalking it up to teams are making tough
- 9:40shots. We got to make adjustments. So,
- 9:41right now I'm currently trying to figure
- 9:43out like, you know, where we can get
- 9:45better, whether it's our closeouts or
- 9:47whether we're overh helping too much.
- 9:49Um, cuz, you know, when you switch as
- 9:51much as we do, you shouldn't have to be
- 9:52require a ton of help. So, currently in
- 9:55the stages of trying to figure that out
- 9:56right now. So, once I have a better
- 9:58answer, I'll let you know.
- 10:00>> Any other questions?
- 10:02>> All right. Thanks.
- 10:03>> Thanks.
