Latest / Worldview Matters With David Fiorazo / Todd Nettleton: Increasing Persecution Of Christians Globally
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to World View Matters, discussing controversial issues, discerning current events,
- 0:10defending biblical Christianity.
- 0:13No topic off limits.
- 0:16And now, here's your host, David Firazzo.
- 0:19Hey friends, God bless you, thanks for watching and for sharing the podcast.
- 0:23That's a very important topic today, and that is Christian persecution worldwide.
- 0:28And man, we've seen it increase, it's kind of off the charts, but we've got to be aware
- 0:34and not just turn our heads or our eyes away from it because we live in a country that
- 0:39has a constitution, religious freedom in the First Amendment, which I mean, there's some
- 0:44definitely things changing in our own country, but I've got Todd Nettleton with us.
- 0:48We had him on earlier, I think, actually, at the end of last year.
- 0:52And he's the host of VOM Radio, he's with Voice of the Martyrs.
- 0:57The website is persecution.com.
- 1:01And not only does he host VOM Radio, he's a busy guy.
- 1:04He's traveled around for many, many years, around the world, talking to persecuted Christians.
- 1:09And he has written a book called When Faith Is Forbidden, 40 days on the front lines with
- 1:17persecuted Christians, and they've got a lot of events coming up and things.
- 1:21We need to keep you up to speed on.
- 1:23So Todd Nettleton, great to see you, brother. Welcome back to World View Matters.
- 1:27Thanks so much. It's great to be with you.
- 1:29All right, let's start with the Voice of the Matters magazine, Voice of the Martyrs magazine.
- 1:34People can get this. It's free, and I get it every month, I believe.
- 1:39So can you let people know where on the website they can find out about that?
- 1:43Subscribe to it.
- 1:44Absolutely, persecution.com is the main Voice of the Martyrs website, persecution.com.
- 1:50And right at the top of the page, there's a button that says free magazine.
- 1:53So you just click on that button, give us your name and address.
- 1:56And we will send you, like you say, free of charge.
- 2:00The magazine that that helps you pray for persecuted Christians really helps you know,
- 2:06put names and faces to the members of our family who are suffering for their faith.
- 2:11And so you can cut out those pictures, maybe put them up on your refrigerator,
- 2:15maybe put them inside your Bible so that you pray throughout the year for persecuted Christians.
- 2:20This is a part of Vioam's ministry, educating American Christians, equipping you so that you
- 2:26can pray for these members of our family. So Todd, if we weren't planning on talking about this,
- 2:31but since I've been reading through this, what fascinating stories.
- 2:36Boy, I tell you, I mean, there have been some issues that I've received that I look at it
- 2:41and started reading it. I'm going, man, your heart goes out to these people because we have a hard
- 2:47time relating here in the United States of entertainment to real Christian persecution.
- 2:52But this was a fascinating story. There's a guy that was driving a taxi cab, a former Muslim.
- 2:57It's called a rebel for the cause of Christ. His name is Rahim.
- 3:01And this is, I think, one of the last stories in this month's edition of Voice of the Martyrs
- 3:07magazine. And someone, he's a, I guess he drives a taxi or drove a taxi or a bus.
- 3:13Someone witnessed to him one of the passengers, apparently, that is a fascinating story.
- 3:19And just says to us, man, any opportunity where we think someone might be too far from Christ
- 3:28because they're dedicated to Islam or their Muslim, I mean, things like this blow that
- 3:35theory out of the water that there's a hunger for the truth. Can you share your thoughts on that
- 3:39story real quick? There is a hunger for the truth. And one of the really cool things about this
- 3:45month's magazine is we have the story of three different people who were witnessed to by the same
- 3:51man. So it kind of shows that the echoes that a life can make as we are witnessed for Christ.
- 3:58All three of these people still following Christ still involved in ministry.
- 4:02The man who shared the gospel with them was martyred. He was literally killed, laid down his life
- 4:07for his faith in Christ. But you see, as you read these stories, how his legacy, his ministry is
- 4:14still ongoing, even after he was killed, through the lives of people that he reached with the
- 4:20gospel. And one of the challenges, I think when you get to the end of the magazine is, okay,
- 4:25what, what ripples am I leaving that are going to outlast my lifetime that are going to still be
- 4:31echoing after I have gone and entered eternity? I think that's really one of the challenges that
- 4:37this month's magazine presents to us is, wow, what am I doing that's going to echo in eternity?
- 4:44Things that matter, wow, and for eternity, like you said, I was talking to someone earlier today
- 4:50that doesn't want a big bank account. He said he's putting out, he's mailing out gospel tracks and
- 4:55information on the biblical worldview and the rapture and other things. But that's the view we've
- 5:02got to take because we are here for such a time as this. And some people that come across our path,
- 5:07if we don't take that opportunity to share the gospel, I mean, we miss out on that blessing. But
- 5:14someone else is going to have to do it. And God is big enough to orchestrate all that. But like you
- 5:19said, it's in terms of eternity, what are we doing that matters, right? And I think one of the things
- 5:25we need to do is be alert for the doors that God is opening to us. I heard a story yesterday
- 5:32of a lady who got in a taxi cab in a Muslim country, a restricted nation, and hanging off of the
- 5:39mirror of the taxi cab was a cross, which in that culture, a very rare thing. It's like, wow,
- 5:44this is interesting. And she said, well, tell me about that cross. And the taxi cab driver said,
- 5:50you know, it's not mine. One of my passengers left it in the vehicle. So I have hung it around
- 5:57the mirror, hoping I'll pick up that person again. And I can return it to them. But then the taxi
- 6:02driver said, you know, ever since I've had that cross hanging on my mirror, I've had at the end
- 6:09of the day, I've had just the right amount of funds to cover my needs for that day. Every day,
- 6:13whether I have a lot of passengers or a little passenger, it's just the right amount that I need
- 6:18for that day. And this Christian passenger was able to give them a gospel booklet and say, hey,
- 6:25would you like to know more about the cross that that's hanging on your mirror? Would you like
- 6:28to know the story behind that? And the person who wants to meet you and wants to bless you. And I
- 6:33think, you know, we often would go in a taxi that had a cross and we would never say a word about
- 6:38it. We would never bring it up. And maybe the Lord is opening the door for us to have that
- 6:43conversation. We just need to have our eyes open and see the opportunities that he's presenting
- 6:49us. And frankly, pray for those opportunities. Lord, today, I'm ready. Yes. Let me have those
- 6:54opportunities. Let me have those conversations. And not just pray for them, but then be willing
- 7:00to be interrupted by God's work in your life that day. I think I, yes, I paraphrased a quote. I
- 7:07don't know who said that was a Dietrich Bon offer or someone, a great theologian or someone
- 7:12said, we need to be willing to be interrupted by God in our daily lives. Todd, there's an event
- 7:20coming up called I am and meaning I am a Nazarene. It's a virtual event. I believe they can go to
- 7:28persecution.com. Can they watch it online? How does that work? And I see Stephen Curtis Chapman
- 7:33is going to be leading some worship. So tell us about that event. Yeah. This is coming up on Friday
- 7:38night, March the 8th. So you can register now online. You can register to watch it at your house
- 7:44with your family. You can actually register to host it at your church. We would love for whole
- 7:48congregations to get together and watch this. As you mentioned, Stephen Curtis Chapman, leading the
- 7:54worship for the evening as well. We have three brothers and sisters who have encountered persecution
- 8:01firsthand. So you have Heather Mercer, who was imprisoned by the Taliban in Afghanistan. You have
- 8:07Hassan Abdur Rahim, who was arrested and imprisoned in Sudan alongside my coworker Peter Yassik.
- 8:13You have John Samara, who leads a team of gospel workers in the Middle East and North Africa.
- 8:19He is seeing amazing results for the ministry that he's doing, but they face persecution every
- 8:25single day. They know they are in harm's way. In fact, just recently, one of the pastors that he
- 8:31works with was kidnapped by a terrorist group. They were sending text messages to the congregation
- 8:38showing how they were mistreating their pastor. Thankfully, the Lord intervened and he was rescued
- 8:45kind of miraculously actually rescued from that. But those are the kind of frontline workers that
- 8:51John is working with. And we will hear about that on March the 8th during this virtual event.
- 8:56Again, it's free. We do ask you to register. We want to know how many people are watching.
- 9:01You'll need a link to be able to do that. And I would encourage you if you're in a Sunday school
- 9:05class or a Bible study group or a church, get a group of Christian friends together and participate.
- 9:11And we're going to be challenged. We're going to be challenged. Some of the same questions
- 9:15we've already asked is like, Hey, what do we do when there's opposition? What do we do when it's
- 9:20dangerous to follow Jesus? Those kind of questions are great things to address as a group with
- 9:27your Bible study group, with your discipleship group, to kind of talk through and hear these
- 9:32stories and talk through. Okay, what does that mean for me living here in the United States?
- 9:37Yeah, exactly. Because I mean, if we can't even share our faith here, we're somewhat comfortable
- 9:44and we're somewhat protected. I can't imagine being in some of these other countries. But that's
- 9:50why I appreciate your work, Todd and what you do at Voice of the Martyrs. Let's talk about a few
- 9:56stories and let's start with India because that is one of the topics I received from Voice of the
- 10:02Martyrs. It says India's status changed to restricted nation. And man, I thought it was already
- 10:11dangerous to share the Gospel there and it was already restricted. But I guess it wasn't
- 10:16technically as far as status goes, can you explain that for us, Todd? Yeah, absolutely. So there's
- 10:20more than 70 countries where Christians are persecuted for their faith and Voice of the Martyrs,
- 10:25we classify them two ways. We say a hostile area was one where the government at least pays
- 10:32lip service to the idea of protecting religious freedom. Maybe there are family members who
- 10:37persecute Christians. Maybe there are radical groups that persecute Christians. But by and
- 10:42large, it's not the government that's doing the persecution. Then we talk about restricted
- 10:47nations where it is the government. They are the problem. They are the persecutor. This change
- 10:52of status for India to restricted nation means that the government is the persecutor and we have
- 10:59seen this change over the last number of years after Prime Minister Modi took power 10 years
- 11:06ago. He brought with him this Hindu nationalist mindset. And literally there have been government
- 11:12ministers that have talked about India is a Hindu country. Sometimes they even call it Hindu stand,
- 11:18the land of the Hindus. They talk about the soil of India is Hindu soil. And so if you're not a
- 11:25Hindu, according to Prime Minister Modi and his government, you don't really have a place in India.
- 11:31You don't really belong there. And so that attitude has filtered down into the whole country.
- 11:37It is affecting how our brothers and sisters there are persecuted. And so that's why we have
- 11:42made this change to point out the fact that it's it's not a sort of odd occurrence when an
- 11:47Indian Christian is persecuted. It's not because there's just a radical group in their village.
- 11:51It's the national government that is really setting the tone for persecution in the country.
- 11:57Yeah, I see that way back in 2002. The voice of the martyrs designated India as a hostile area
- 12:03back then. And it's interesting. Things changed depending on the governments and whoever comes to
- 12:09power. But just this list of restricted nations. Todd, where's the best place? Do you have a
- 12:18place on your website where you have a list that people can look at? We do. We have a global
- 12:23prayer guide. We have the website version again, persecution.com right on the front page.
- 12:27There's a link to the global prayer guide. We will send that to people on paper. We will also put
- 12:33that that information is also online. But as we rate these countries and I'm glad you mentioned
- 12:39going back to 2002. But I remember when on our prayer map, we literally had certain states of India
- 12:46highlighted like this is a hostile area because the state government is against Christians or
- 12:51this is a place we see a lot of persecution. Then we went to the whole country as hostile because
- 12:56there was so much persecution happening. And now we've made the change to restricted nations
- 13:01signifying the fact that it's the government that was really driving the persecution in India today.
- 13:07Okay, yeah, I found that map and we just put it up there for our listeners to see our viewers.
- 13:11I should say to see Turkey. Turkey wanted to share about a recent attack at a church there.
- 13:19Yeah, there was an attack two Sundays ago at a church in Istanbul. In this case, it was a Catholic
- 13:25church. Two masked gunmen walked into the church very casually. First, they fired into the air,
- 13:33then they shot a man who was in the church. There are two different stories about what was really
- 13:39happening here. So there's one story that says after that, their guns jammed and so they couldn't
- 13:44shoot anyone else. So they just left. The second story is a little maybe more interesting.
- 13:51The man who was shot was actually born in a Muslim family. He was shot and killed by these two
- 13:56gunmen. According to many radical Muslims, if you were born in a Muslim family and here you are
- 14:03on a Sunday morning in a Christian church, you're in a prostate. You should be executed. And so
- 14:10there is some thought that he was the target of this attack. The whole idea was to kill this
- 14:16apostate Muslim. At this point, we don't know exactly what the truth is. And the Turkish government
- 14:23has arrested literally dozens of people that they say are involved. And behind this, the two gunmen
- 14:30are reportedly not Turkish. They are from other countries outside of Turkey. The other really
- 14:36interesting thing about this case is the group that took responsibility for it was ISIS
- 14:42of the Turkey province. And so and that this is the first time we've had an attack by this
- 14:48so-called ISIS Turkey branch. And for Christians in Turkey, they are like, wait a minute. If
- 14:55there is an active ISIS branch now focusing on Turkey and focusing on us as Turkish Christians,
- 15:02that's clearly a big cause of concern for them. So this is something we'll see how it develops,
- 15:09we'll see what happens as far as the justice system and the court process. But it's something
- 15:15that Christians in Turkey are certainly paying attention to and saying, wait, what does this
- 15:19mean for us in the future? We're with Todd Nettleton, Voice of the Martyrs, the website
- 15:24persecution.com. We'll be right back on World View Matters. Today's show is brought to you by
- 15:30Harbinger's Daily. The world news biblically understood. Stay informed at harbingerstaley.com.
- 15:46Okay Todd, one thing I wanted to say that we did want to skip over too fast when you were talking
- 15:51about India. It's not just Christians that were being persecuted there. India wants to even
- 15:58Muslims, right? They wanted to even get out anybody that was not a Hindu. So that's very interesting.
- 16:04So there are different groups being persecuted in different countries. Sometimes it's not Christians,
- 16:09it's just, you know, if you're not a national, like a Hindu or, yeah, so anyway, I just wanted to
- 16:17share that briefly because I found that to be very interesting that they were going after
- 16:20the Muslims as well. Let's go over to Cuba, Todd. And you said you have some good news about
- 16:25something God's doing over there. We want to hear it because Cuba, you think, oh, but yeah,
- 16:30tell us what's going on. And we like good news, don't we? We love it when we get to say good
- 16:34things about what's happening in hostile and restricted nations. I had the chance this week to
- 16:39sit down with a pastor from Cuba and he talked about how there is a crackdown going on in the
- 16:45country, the government, the communist government there absolutely is opposed to the church. They
- 16:50will not allow new church buildings to be built. They will not allow old church buildings to be
- 16:55repaired. They will not allow Christians to buy homes that would be big enough to hold gatherings.
- 17:01And so Christians have said, okay, we don't have a church building. We don't have a big enough
- 17:05house to have church. We'll go out in the streets. We'll go out in the forest. We don't care. We're
- 17:10just going to meet. We're going to study. We're going to study God's word. We're going to praise him
- 17:14together. There was an event recently where 10,000 Christians showed up at one of these outdoor
- 17:21locations. It's completely illegal. The government did not give permission. Every pastor that was
- 17:28involved in organizing this event was penalized afterwards. All of them were interrogated. All
- 17:33of them were questioned. All of them were pressured. But the pastors in Cuba are saying, listen,
- 17:37we understand that's going to be the cost. But we're going to serve the Lord. We're going to do
- 17:42what he asks us to do. And so, and this is one of many events that are happening. As Cuban
- 17:49Christians say, we are going to serve the Lord. We know the government is against that. We know
- 17:54it is going to cost us. We're still going to serve the Lord. And so exciting to hear,
- 17:59voice of the martyrs was actually somewhat a part of that event. We actually provided
- 18:04Bibles for all the 10,000 people who showed up to that event. So we had a Bible distribution
- 18:09right there. It is so difficult for the average Cuban Christian to get their own copy of God's
- 18:15Word. And so for us to be able to help meet that need and send those people home with the Bible,
- 18:21what a what a blessing for us to be involved in. Like I say, it's exciting to see God at work.
- 18:28And Christians willing to take the risk. One of the one of the really hard things to hear from
- 18:34this pastor is how pastors children are punished because their father is a pastor. Like for instance,
- 18:43they could be at the top of their class from kindergarten through 12th grade. But when it comes time
- 18:49for graduation day, they might not get a diploma. And it's like, wait a minute, I did all the work.
- 18:53I was at the top of my class. Yeah, but your dad is not with the revolution. Your dad is not
- 18:59a good citizen of our country. We're not going to reward you. And so you have all of their
- 19:05opportunities being taken away from them, all of their opportunities being cut off from them.
- 19:09And you know, this pastor's his own children have experienced some of that. And he said,
- 19:14our our children understand this is a part of following Jesus. This is a part of the price that we
- 19:19pay. And so, but I just thought, you know, I thought of my own kids. I thought of, you know,
- 19:24how you work hard through all those years. And then to have that just snatched away from you.
- 19:29Or the only reason because your father is a pastor, we're not going to reward you.
- 19:34How frustrating, how discouraging that would be. So I hope those who are watching,
- 19:39I hope you'll pray for our brothers and sisters in Cuba. And especially for pastors and their
- 19:43families. Yeah, that's great news. I mean, when we first started hearing you talk about this,
- 19:48I'm thinking, did I hear right? This is in Cuba, where there's that first of all, they're holding
- 19:53outdoor events. There's that many people. But for pastors and church leaders here in America,
- 19:59that those kind of stories, they must stiffen their spines, their faith, encourage their faith.
- 20:05Because that's over there in Cuba right here. Yes, there's there's a cost to following Christ.
- 20:11But in America, we've got a little bit of a reprieve because of the Constitution, as we've mentioned.
- 20:16But how do you get the Bibles to them? And doesn't the government try to stop
- 20:21Bibles from coming into the country? Yes, the government tries to stop it. And I probably shouldn't
- 20:27tell you how we get them to. Okay, that's that's that's fine. We understand. So, you know, I as I
- 20:33talked to this pastor, I was reminded I met a pastor in China several years ago. And he said this
- 20:39phrase, he said, everything is illegal, but everything is possible. And I shared that with this
- 20:45Cuban pastor. And he said, that's exactly what I mean, that that's exactly how it is. Yes,
- 20:49everything is illegal. But because we're willing to pay the price, everything is possible.
- 20:55Yes, it's going to cost us, but everything is possible if you're willing to pay the price.
- 21:00So somehow, Bibles got into the country, got into Cuba, and we're given to people at this
- 21:06event where thousands showed up. Praise God, Todd Nettleton. That's a great story. But this isn't
- 21:13even maybe even a greater story in a different way in Africa, what you guys are doing, where people
- 21:19are reaching out and helping those who have gone through trauma or persecution. And they're ministering
- 21:25to those people. You've got more people training to be a part of that. Tell us what's going on there.
- 21:30That sounds really neat. I'm so excited about this. We actually, I want to encourage people,
- 21:36listen to our Voice of the Martis Radio episode this week and next week. Because we have the leader
- 21:42of this trauma training ministry, his name we call him brother Philip. And he has been doing this
- 21:48for more than 20 years. In fact, he got a lot of his training working in the US prison system,
- 21:54working with prisoners who had been traumatized and helping them work through that. He has brought
- 22:00that education and brought that experience to VOM and he's helping us deal with persecuted
- 22:05Christians who have been through trauma. And one of the things he said, and I think this will
- 22:10help our viewers to understand what we're talking about. He said, if you've been traumatized and you
- 22:15don't process that, you don't deal with that trauma, it's always like it happened yesterday.
- 22:21It was, it's never six months ago. It's never a year ago. It's always like it happened yesterday.
- 22:27And so when you think about it and he is working in in Western Africa, when you think about a village
- 22:32where radical Muslim terrorists came into the village and they killed all of the men and they
- 22:38sexually assaulted all of the women, what kind of trauma does those are sisters, those sisters in
- 22:44Christ carry with them from that time, from that suffering. And so what he is doing is he's
- 22:50training pastors, he's training church leaders in how to help them overcome that, overcome that
- 22:57trauma and process it and and see the Lord's hand even in the midst of that. And so we have heard
- 23:04some amazing stories. One of one of the ladies that he is working with, what it went through a
- 23:08horrible persecution trauma, literally to the point that she did not speak. For two years,
- 23:15she did not speak. She lost her voice, was unable to get past this trauma. She began working with
- 23:22our team there in Western Africa. And the Lord gave her back her voice. She has regained the
- 23:28ability to speak. And not only is she regained the ability to speak, she is leading the prayer
- 23:33ministry in her church. So she is using her voice to lead the prayer ministry in her church.
- 23:40That's one example of this ministry. And I'm so excited that Voice of the Martyrs is doing this
- 23:45because it's, you know, it's easy to say, here's a blanket and here's a plate of food. Now go be
- 23:50well. But if it's always like that trauma happened yesterday, how do you go and be well? How do
- 23:56you go on and serve the Lord? And so I'm just thrilled that our staff and I'm thrilled that
- 24:02Brother Philip is a part of it. And I want to encourage you, go to vonradio.net, listen to this
- 24:08conversation. It's going to help you pray. It's also going to help you as you think about experiences,
- 24:14maybe your friends, your relatives have gone through to help them get through that and help them
- 24:20find how they can serve the Lord on the other side of it. What an amazing and a huge need
- 24:27that is now practically being met. And man, I wish we would have heard about this many, many,
- 24:33many years ago, but at least you guys are doing something about it because you think of all the trauma
- 24:37when it comes to those who have been persecuted, those who've had a limb cut off or those who've lost
- 24:43all their families or houses burnt down. It's just the violent attacks and, you know, the trauma
- 24:50that takes place and so many that need to be ministered to. Well, Todd, I just am so thankful for
- 24:55to hear that story as well. There's also a great story about a pastor in Iran who secret police
- 25:03arrived and arrested him and his wife and their 17 year old son for others. They went to prison.
- 25:08They're apparently a prison with 6,000 inmates and they began writing memorized Bible verses on
- 25:14paper and that grew because after several months, they were still in prison. That's a great story
- 25:20too. And I got that through voice of the martyrs and when a recent mailing. Do you want to touch on
- 25:24that one? Are you familiar with that story, Todd? Yeah. In fact, I had the chance to meet pastor
- 25:28Hamayun several years ago and hear his story. As you said, he was arrested and he has an amazing
- 25:35testimony. He was a drug addict that the Lord rescued out of drug addiction and he became an
- 25:40incredible witness and incredible minister in Iran. But of course, when you do that, you end up in
- 25:45jail and he was in jail with several other Christians and they didn't have access to a Bible.
- 25:51But what they did do is they got a notebook and they got a pencil and they circulated
- 25:55among all the Christians and said, hey, write down all of the verses you've memorized in this notebook.
- 26:00This is going to be our Bible. And so those 6 Christians wrote down every verse they had memorized,
- 26:05they captured them right then and that became their prison Bible through the long months that he
- 26:11was in prison. Wow. What a phenomenal story. And by the way, friends, go to persecution.com.
- 26:18Also, Todd's book, when faith is forbidden, that's available on the website or it's available
- 26:23on Amazon. Great story. These are personal interviews he's had with people, Christians on the
- 26:28front lines that have been persecuted. And we can really, really appreciate some of the suffering
- 26:34and some of the things people go through and they give God the glory and they keep their faith.
- 26:39And we just are amazed and inspired by those stories. So Todd, thank you for your work.
- 26:44And Lord willing, we'll get another update from you next time. But good to see you, brother.
- 26:49It's good to see you too. Thanks for having me. Oh, praise God. Thank you for your time.
- 26:53persecution.com, friends, and you can get the voice of the martyr's newsletter, the magazine.
- 26:58I'd encourage you to do that. It's free and support them if you can. Well, more to come next time.
- 27:04God bless you and as always, keep speaking the truth about things that matter.
