- 0:35Speaker 1: of pudding and now here's jah. Good afternoon, everybody, and
- 0:40Speaker 1: welcome to the new episode of Kats and Pudding. And
- 0:43Speaker 1: today I have an awesome guest, Jeff Colby. He is
- 0:47Speaker 1: he's he's like a renaissance man. He is a he's
- 0:52Speaker 1: done a lot. He's an NBA xmba playstal workers for
- 0:55Speaker 1: playing for.
- 0:55Speaker 3: The NBA overseas.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Now NBA, and an author and also a model too, right,
- 1:02Speaker 1: so he does all these great He's like a trifecta.
- 1:06Speaker 1: So welcome to the show. Jeff. I'm so happy you came,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and I'm happy that. Yeah, you just have such a
- 1:11Speaker 1: beautiful smile. I was just saying that he looks like
- 1:13Speaker 1: Denzel Washington, so so handsome. But you're handsome. About that?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Oh so tell us about let's give me your journey,
- 1:20Speaker 1: tell us about the NBA, and tell us how that
- 1:23Speaker 1: all started, because that's what I'm sure everybody's trying to
- 1:25Speaker 1: hear about it.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it honestly was a It was kind of
- 1:30Speaker 3: it was unexpected, but like it was weird because you know,
- 1:33Speaker 3: it started during my first year playing professional in Barcelona.
- 1:39Speaker 3: We had a crazy successful preseason and then after that
- 1:43Speaker 3: the coach just stopped playing me.
- 1:44Speaker 4: So I was just very confused at like what to do. So,
- 1:48Speaker 4: you know, I call my parents.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I'm all the way over in Spain and my parents
- 1:51Speaker 3: are in Miami, and my dad's like, work harder, and
- 1:55Speaker 3: I'm just like what.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Else was supposed to do?
- 2:00Speaker 3: Exactly, Like I was just out of college, first year
- 2:04Speaker 3: out of college, so I want to say, like twenty three.
- 2:09Speaker 4: You were a baby, yeah, as a child, and.
- 2:14Speaker 3: You know, I was like, I mean I'm a starter
- 2:16Speaker 3: at this at this time, and now I'm just not
- 2:19Speaker 3: even seeing the court. So you know, it was just
- 2:22Speaker 3: a constant battle, you know, between the coach. But it
- 2:25Speaker 3: ended up being like a political reason why I got benched.
- 2:29Speaker 3: But it honestly like kind of worked out in my favor. Randomly,
- 2:34Speaker 3: after practice, I just googled what do successful people do
- 2:37Speaker 3: and going through a tough time, and this article from
- 2:40Speaker 3: the Harvard Business Review came about and I read it
- 2:43Speaker 3: and it talked about meditation and the most successful CEOs
- 2:47Speaker 3: and leaders how they implement this practice in their day
- 2:51Speaker 3: to day And I was confused.
- 2:54Speaker 4: I was like, does this actually work? Like so, I
- 2:57Speaker 4: don't know.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I just tried it, and for some reason, I kept
- 3:01Speaker 3: getting this reoccurring like vision during like my practice of
- 3:05Speaker 3: me playing in a huge arena with a jersey that
- 3:08Speaker 3: had orange on it.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Oh my god, it sounds crazy, just like somebody for
- 3:12Speaker 1: you to do that, to even thing to do that,
- 3:14Speaker 1: like most people are not gonna like, let's see what
- 3:16Speaker 1: we could do to it like that you would even
- 3:19Speaker 1: think to pursue something like that, like to say, look,
- 3:22Speaker 1: what can do the successful people do to Because a
- 3:24Speaker 1: lot of people if they're if they if they feel
- 3:27Speaker 1: like you know, depressed, whatever, they feel like that there
- 3:31Speaker 1: they didn't have an opportunity like you were proactive on
- 3:34Speaker 1: doing that and you and had you started meditating and
- 3:38Speaker 1: this is you, yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 4: And conjured pretty I mean, I just want.
- 3:43Speaker 1: To meditate for me.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Teach you.
- 3:46Speaker 3: You know, it's not as hard as people think, I
- 3:50Speaker 3: promise you. And it was just so weird because like
- 3:55Speaker 3: I just went on this journey of like deep self development,
- 4:00Speaker 3: and you know, over time, I just felt a little
- 4:03Speaker 3: bit more at peace with myself. Although I was going
- 4:06Speaker 3: through this time where I was like a young you know, postgraduate,
- 4:10Speaker 3: you know, professional athlete, and I'm just.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Like what is going on?
- 4:15Speaker 3: But yeah, I just kept really working on myself and
- 4:18Speaker 3: then my contract I got bought out by another team
- 4:22Speaker 3: in Spain, and I just continued on this journey and
- 4:26Speaker 3: you know, just the amount of time I dedicated towards
- 4:29Speaker 3: like myself versus like, you know, getting caught up in
- 4:33Speaker 3: the outside world so much. And lo and behold, like
- 4:38Speaker 3: it was just like things just started falling into place,
- 4:41Speaker 3: just like.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Somebody or you just something. It was like just an
- 4:44Speaker 1: opportunity presented its itself, Like how did it happen?
- 4:47Speaker 4: Like it's just so oh So.
- 4:51Speaker 3: After the season, I went home and you know it
- 4:54Speaker 3: was time for me to go play for my national
- 4:57Speaker 3: team because but I'm one hundred percent hait. And I
- 5:02Speaker 3: went to go play for the national team and I
- 5:04Speaker 3: after that, you know, I had a pretty you know
- 5:07Speaker 3: good season with them. But when my agent came to me,
- 5:12Speaker 3: he was like, hey, we have a contract in the
- 5:14Speaker 3: first league of Denmark, it just didn't feel right in
- 5:17Speaker 3: my gut, like my stomach was telling me like it yes,
- 5:22Speaker 3: and I spoke to the coach on the phone too,
- 5:25Speaker 3: and I just wasn't convinced. It just felt like I
- 5:27Speaker 3: was going to be like another player. So they sent
- 5:33Speaker 3: the contract and my agent at the time was pressure
- 5:35Speaker 3: like kind of pressuring me to take it. And then
- 5:38Speaker 3: I want paid, so paid exactly, and I just felt
- 5:43Speaker 3: like there was a moment I just felt nauseous.
- 5:45Speaker 4: I was like, no, I don't want to do that.
- 5:47Speaker 4: And it was.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Crazy because in the in my journal, I wrote like,
- 5:51Speaker 3: make it to a first league, you know, anywhere, because
- 5:54Speaker 3: in Barcelona I was playing in the second league in Spain.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And then I just got this idea to just like
- 6:03Speaker 3: message every and anybody I knew. So I was just like, hey,
- 6:07Speaker 3: do you have an agent, do you have any advice? Bah,
- 6:09Speaker 3: I'm double texting triple texting. I made a list of
- 6:12Speaker 3: like one hundred and fifty people to like actively reach
- 6:16Speaker 3: out to and that's proactive. Yeah, literally, super persistent because
- 6:23Speaker 3: at this moment, I was like, I don't want to
- 6:25Speaker 3: go to you know, you didn't want to do.
- 6:27Speaker 1: It, you didn't want to take this because how long
- 6:29Speaker 1: were the contract?
- 6:30Speaker 4: How long it was for it was for a year. Yeah,
- 6:33Speaker 4: and that's that's quite that's quite some time.
- 6:36Speaker 1: That's I mean, a season in basketball is why, like
- 6:38Speaker 1: in dogs, it's like seven years old, right, because there's
- 6:42Speaker 1: only a certain amount of time that you were actually
- 6:44Speaker 1: going to be.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Able to play. Yeah. Absolutely, So one of my like, good, no,
- 6:52Speaker 4: I'll take it right because yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Because a season puts a lot of miles of your body.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It's strenuous. So one of my friends who I had
- 7:02Speaker 3: trained with, you know, over the years, he actually he
- 7:05Speaker 3: actually gave me his his agent's contract information. I spoke
- 7:10Speaker 3: to him and it was just like a sigh of
- 7:12Speaker 3: relief and pretty much I gave the team in Denmark
- 7:16Speaker 3: a verbal commitment.
- 7:18Speaker 1: And there's no signature. Yeah yeah, yeah, that's when it's official.
- 7:24Speaker 4: That's what it's official.
- 7:26Speaker 3: And then my my friend's agent was like bro, don't
- 7:31Speaker 3: do it, like I like, I felt like that my
- 7:34Speaker 3: agent at the time was selling me short on my potential.
- 7:38Speaker 3: So the new agent was like, don't do it. I
- 7:41Speaker 3: promise you you're You're in good hands. And my gut
- 7:45Speaker 3: just trusted him. So I cut the contract up. I
- 7:49Speaker 3: told him I couldn't do it, signed with the new agency,
- 7:53Speaker 3: and four days later, I'm training with the New York Knicks.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Insanity.
- 7:58Speaker 1: You imagine you would have been Denmark freaking wooden shoes,
- 8:02Speaker 1: playing on the mast and now.
- 8:04Speaker 4: You're so amazing exactly like I.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Was, like, my god, that's a that's a fabulous freaking story.
- 8:12Speaker 1: That is a fabulous story. That's great. That's like a miracle.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Like that's like lightning truck.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Literally literally you can you play?
- 8:20Speaker 1: Then I want to need to know how you meditate,
- 8:21Speaker 1: because I need lightning to strike me a couple of times.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Oh of course, and you and you.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Feel that this is because of the meditation. That definitely
- 8:29Speaker 1: look positive, vagre, So tell me about that. Tell me
- 8:31Speaker 1: about how that would help you, how you feel.
- 8:35Speaker 3: It definitely helped me in wait, Like for example, when
- 8:38Speaker 3: I was when I was a kid, I you know,
- 8:41Speaker 3: growing up, I was obese, so like, I know it's hard. Yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 3: it's hard to tell now, yes, actually now I'm six nine.
- 8:52Speaker 4: A tree.
- 8:55Speaker 3: If we stand next to you, I can you know,
- 8:57Speaker 3: you can cast a shadow. I can block out this
- 9:00Speaker 3: from you.
- 9:00Speaker 4: I got you.
- 9:03Speaker 3: But in fifth grade, I was one hundred and eighty pounds, wow,
- 9:06Speaker 3: like huge, and you know back then obviously like you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: my brothers would mess with me a lot, So I
- 9:13Speaker 3: had small a little bit of anger issues and you know,
- 9:18Speaker 3: over time like those got resolved. But you know, when
- 9:23Speaker 3: I got introduced to the meditation and just being a
- 9:26Speaker 3: little bit more in tune to myself and you know,
- 9:28Speaker 3: investing more into myself and my mental health and my headspace,
- 9:33Speaker 3: I've I noticed that I just became like a lot
- 9:36Speaker 3: calmer and like just being able to like actually listen
- 9:40Speaker 3: to people, hold like have better conversations, and it just
- 9:45Speaker 3: and honestly it just made me feel overall better. So
- 9:49Speaker 3: you know, meditation, nature, walks, journaling, just disconnecting from technology.
- 9:55Speaker 4: It's done.
- 9:56Speaker 3: So it's done wonders for like my mental health and
- 9:59Speaker 3: my overall being that I'm just eternally grateful for it.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Is there a person that you that you follow or
- 10:07Speaker 1: somebody that you listen to to help you meditate, or
- 10:09Speaker 1: you just just kind of did this on your own.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Is that like like a specific or maybe a book.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 3: So I was just like I was just like a
- 10:20Speaker 3: mad man, like researching everything, like from the Jay Shetties
- 10:25Speaker 3: to the whim Hoff with like the breath work. Like
- 10:29Speaker 3: I was just looking at every and anything and just
- 10:32Speaker 3: trying like different types of meditations and different levels and
- 10:39Speaker 3: like for example, like some meditations will be five minutes,
- 10:42Speaker 3: some would be like a little bit deeper into like
- 10:44Speaker 3: the you know, twenty to thirty minute. I went to
- 10:48Speaker 3: a couple like sound bad like sound things.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Yeah, the classes, what Tina Turner dos to do that?
- 10:55Speaker 1: What the what is that?
- 10:56Speaker 4: What was that?
- 10:57Speaker 1: The Buddhist?
- 10:58Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly do you follow it?
- 11:00Speaker 1: That's you follow that type of religion or no? That
- 11:02Speaker 1: is it? Just this is just quickly not religious.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 3: So I'm naturally Catholic too, but lovely yeah the cross, Yeah,
- 11:13Speaker 3: the same terms.
- 11:14Speaker 1: And you got the hands of God and I've got
- 11:16Speaker 1: the evil.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Yeah of course got protect.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I love it, we got it. We're the same same way.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Like so so the meditation, So how many how many
- 11:29Speaker 1: minutes a day do you now like meditate.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Now I'm probably in the depends on like what my
- 11:35Speaker 3: schedule is looking like, but anywhere from like ten to
- 11:39Speaker 3: twenty minutes.
- 11:39Speaker 1: And that's it. That's all it takes.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Literally, And what do you do?
- 11:42Speaker 1: Let's say, what's your what's your how do you stop
- 11:45Speaker 1: your meditation? Just sit in a quiet room? Are you
- 11:48Speaker 1: are you chanting? Are you just thinking? Are you just
- 11:52Speaker 1: is it just like you said, a walk? What is like?
- 11:55Speaker 1: What would be all like when you're home if you
- 11:57Speaker 1: can't go outside and it's knowing, what would you do?
- 11:59Speaker 3: I would sit in like like probably my living room
- 12:03Speaker 3: and then just like focus on like one thing and
- 12:06Speaker 3: just like calm myself down, control my breathing. And then
- 12:10Speaker 3: pretty much as you know, I'm getting a little bit
- 12:14Speaker 3: more in tune to the present moment, you know, I'll
- 12:16Speaker 3: close my eyes and then I'll do some breath work
- 12:19Speaker 3: and then focus on the breath. And then after that,
- 12:22Speaker 3: I'd let my mind just wander for a little bit
- 12:25Speaker 3: and then I'll bring it back to the breath. And
- 12:27Speaker 3: I do that a few times. And just by doing that,
- 12:30Speaker 3: like when you let when you're focusing on the breath,
- 12:33Speaker 3: and then you let your mind wander. You know, you
- 12:36Speaker 3: get like little snippets of like whatever your mind wants
- 12:39Speaker 3: to think of, and and to me, it's like, okay,
- 12:43Speaker 3: take notes of the reoccurring things, take notes of the
- 12:46Speaker 3: things that like make me feel some type of way,
- 12:49Speaker 3: and also take notes of like the positive stuff. And
- 12:52Speaker 3: then after that I'll just go in journal reflect and
- 12:56Speaker 3: then now it just roots me into having more intention
- 13:00Speaker 3: for my day.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Do you usually I mean sometimes you always do it
- 13:04Speaker 1: in the morning, or sometimes you can't get to it
- 13:06Speaker 1: in the morning.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm human. I try to do it
- 13:10Speaker 3: in the morning, but like if you.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Feel much better when you're doing it the day, you
- 13:14Speaker 1: just want to like yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Exactly, exactly, So I mean, you know, I'm human. Sometimes
- 13:20Speaker 3: I don't do it in the morning, but like I
- 13:22Speaker 3: really try to at least before like five pm. And
- 13:26Speaker 3: you know, days where I have to focus, like heavy focus,
- 13:29Speaker 3: then it's like, you know, two to three times a day.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Well, I think that that's amazing because you're a successful person.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And I mean I don't meditate, but I think I'm
- 13:37Speaker 1: going to start. But by your story, maybe I'll be
- 13:39Speaker 1: playing for the New York next I might be a
- 13:43Speaker 1: runway model.
- 13:44Speaker 3: After that, you can do anything you want.
- 13:48Speaker 1: But I do know, like I go, I love the beach,
- 13:52Speaker 1: and I feel like when I'm at my house by
- 13:54Speaker 1: the beach, that calms me. And I feel like that
- 13:56Speaker 1: in the morning when I'm there, especially, I open my door,
- 14:01Speaker 1: I take some breads in, and I just focus on
- 14:03Speaker 1: what my surroundings. And maybe I should be doing it
- 14:06Speaker 1: for longer, but even that few minutes, it makes me
- 14:09Speaker 1: feel better just by being there, Like it makes me
- 14:12Speaker 1: feel better when I'm there by the water because it's
- 14:14Speaker 1: just I feel like it's cleansing. So I gotta saw
- 14:17Speaker 1: taking some of your advice and is now is this
- 14:20Speaker 1: is what you talk about in your book, because you
- 14:22Speaker 1: did write a book, which is the next topic we're
- 14:25Speaker 1: going to talk about. And this is amazing. I mean,
- 14:28Speaker 1: and you have your jersey on so your number was eighteen.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Do you play that number all the time?
- 14:32Speaker 3: I normally do one, yeah, one or three, but it
- 14:36Speaker 3: just happened that that was eighteen eighteen.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:38Speaker 1: So tell me what your what your book is about?
- 14:41Speaker 1: And is it about the meditation?
- 14:43Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 14:43Speaker 3: So pretty much it's about how meditation just put put
- 14:47Speaker 3: me on this journey of you know, self development. And
- 14:51Speaker 3: you know how I went from I guess you know,
- 14:54Speaker 3: I went to Columbia University here in New York. And
- 14:58Speaker 3: it's not really like common for you know, like athletes
- 15:02Speaker 3: from there to go to the NBA or.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Really it's you know, it's not an athletic school.
- 15:07Speaker 4: It's more for brains than Yeah, exactly.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Very smart. So you're a small basketball.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Yeah there we got.
- 15:14Speaker 1: The basketball players are stupid, but they're not scholars. So
- 15:19Speaker 1: what was what would you study in school?
- 15:21Speaker 4: So I double majored. I majored in art history and sociology.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Smart guy, guy, that's amazing. Yeah, you got a great story.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Keep telling me. I want to hear it.
- 15:33Speaker 4: So you know, I speak about that.
- 15:36Speaker 3: And also just like growing up with some confidence issues,
- 15:40Speaker 3: and I really want to echo this. The idea of
- 15:44Speaker 3: you know, confidence is like it's a skill and it
- 15:48Speaker 3: takes work in which like you have to be willing
- 15:50Speaker 3: and able to put in the work in order to
- 15:53Speaker 3: you know, feel good in yourself. So because like you know,
- 15:56Speaker 3: when you look around, there's now there's like a rot,
- 15:59Speaker 3: like there's the the whole like scope of mental health.
- 16:03Speaker 3: You know, lack of self confidence self awareness has become
- 16:07Speaker 3: so high and you know, I I'm passionate about mental
- 16:11Speaker 3: health because I've been on the other side of things,
- 16:14Speaker 3: and I want I want people to see that there's
- 16:17Speaker 3: a light at the end of the tunnel in which
- 16:19Speaker 3: all it takes is just being intentional with your steps
- 16:22Speaker 3: and just walking towards it and working diligently.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Why do you think that is that this is what's
- 16:27Speaker 1: happening at this time?
- 16:28Speaker 3: I mean, you have some ooh it could I mean,
- 16:31Speaker 3: it could be the rise of social media. It's I
- 16:34Speaker 3: mean because now, like you look around a lot of
- 16:37Speaker 3: people are glued to their phones, and you know.
- 16:40Speaker 1: It's it's becoming.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hard.
- 16:44Speaker 3: It's hard to you know, be somebody of substance when
- 16:47Speaker 3: you're just constantly feeding yourself information that's like curated, you know,
- 16:52Speaker 3: by somebody else. It's like sometimes you need to put
- 16:56Speaker 3: that aside and look in the mirror and then ask yourself,
- 16:59Speaker 3: who do I want to be?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Who do I want to become?
- 17:02Speaker 1: I want to be you.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I want to be you.
- 17:07Speaker 1: No, You're it's it's it's amazing. And I mean because
- 17:11Speaker 1: I mean, I think your generation is I'm just watching
- 17:16Speaker 1: my Hell, you're thirty thirty, right, so you're just just thirty.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Like I have shoes older than you. I always say that,
- 17:24Speaker 1: but and my oldest story is older than you. So
- 17:28Speaker 1: but I see that with with this generation, it's just
- 17:31Speaker 1: like it's just like everything is just so superficial. And
- 17:34Speaker 1: I feel like that a lot. It's just lack of
- 17:36Speaker 1: substance and and I think that's why people are so
- 17:39Speaker 1: unhappy right and and it's just it's just and I
- 17:43Speaker 1: think that that's why there's so much animosity with people
- 17:46Speaker 1: right now, because there's no depth and people are not
- 17:49Speaker 1: truly understanding each other, you know. And I think that
- 17:53Speaker 1: that's why there's a lot of conflict and there's a
- 17:55Speaker 1: lot of you know, things that are going on. Like
- 17:59Speaker 1: so I I agree with you, and I do. I
- 18:01Speaker 1: think the social media is a big problem. I think
- 18:03Speaker 1: that that's what it is. I think people got to
- 18:04Speaker 1: turn it off once in a while, even myself, I know.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And then now I do that at night, I shut
- 18:10Speaker 1: it off. I don't pick up my phone after a
- 18:12Speaker 1: certain time. I used to be cluded to my phone,
- 18:14Speaker 1: and I'm like, you know what, it makes me feel
- 18:16Speaker 1: better at nights. I'm like, you know what, I can't
- 18:19Speaker 1: talk to you after this time, And I don't feel
- 18:21Speaker 1: bad anymore. Like if I don't answer somebody, I'm like,
- 18:23Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I you know, I need time now with
- 18:26Speaker 1: my kids, with my family and and and quiet and
- 18:30Speaker 1: just to to decompress because you have to. You have to.
- 18:34Speaker 1: You can't because how are you gonna keep going on
- 18:36Speaker 1: this this constant merry go round and the cycle?
- 18:40Speaker 4: You know.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So, I mean, I'm a hyper person. You don't. You
- 18:43Speaker 1: don't seem my, you're pretty calm.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Court be afraid.
- 18:49Speaker 1: You're the type of person who's calm. But then if
- 18:51Speaker 1: they snap, you just want to run away from me.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, but you I could say like,
- 18:59Speaker 1: oh I don't want to mess with that, you know,
- 19:01Speaker 1: like because I don't the other one you snap? You snap,
- 19:03Speaker 1: that's it, that's it. You don't want you to snap.
- 19:07Speaker 1: So you so, so you do at ten to twenty
- 19:10Speaker 1: minutes a day, and then do you do you go
- 19:13Speaker 1: on like retreats or anything? Would you feel like, do
- 19:16Speaker 1: you do like like any other activities outside of you know,
- 19:20Speaker 1: with everything else you do, do you do things like
- 19:23Speaker 1: that to like go on like pilgrimages or anything like that.
- 19:29Speaker 3: So I'm the type of person like if I'm curious
- 19:32Speaker 3: about something I want to learn from the source. So obviously,
- 19:36Speaker 3: you know yoga, which is good, you know, helps with
- 19:39Speaker 3: like the mobility, breath work. But my last season, I
- 19:43Speaker 3: was playing in Tokyo, and I'm like, there's monks here,
- 19:48Speaker 3: There's people who are really really into you know, the
- 19:51Speaker 3: things that I want to learn more about. So it
- 19:55Speaker 3: was like towards the like the middle of my season,
- 19:58Speaker 3: we had a few days off and I went to
- 20:02Speaker 3: the mountains to this uh. I went to the mountains
- 20:07Speaker 3: to this temple and I had to sit down with
- 20:10Speaker 3: two monks and we just had an awesome conversation and
- 20:14Speaker 3: it was just like they talked.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Not all of them are all to talk, I take.
- 20:21Speaker 1: I just said sciences of silences.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean one one of them only spoke Japanese,
- 20:27Speaker 3: so that was but thank god for technology because I
- 20:31Speaker 3: was translating Google lens and the other one spoke English
- 20:35Speaker 3: and Japanese.
- 20:35Speaker 4: So that was awesome. And yeah, we had a.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Great that's amazing, that's what. That was a great experience.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Did you ever go to like like Arizona or like
- 20:45Speaker 1: people say when like they go to like the Grand
- 20:48Speaker 1: Grand Canyon, like they get this like.
- 20:51Speaker 4: That's over in Vegas, Vegas.
- 20:54Speaker 1: It was Arizona, isn't It definitely.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Was in Vegas.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Ivers I was, Yeah, I think I think so, but
- 21:03Speaker 1: I but I did. They when they go there and
- 21:05Speaker 1: they do like this, it's like a cleanse or whatever.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I always wanted, especially a lot of Yogi people like
- 21:11Speaker 1: the people. They they have places that you can go
- 21:17Speaker 1: to and then they take you to the weather near
- 21:20Speaker 1: the Grand Canyon and they say it's very cleansing because
- 21:22Speaker 1: it's like the like the beginning of the earth and
- 21:25Speaker 1: all this stuff. So I don't know, that's where I
- 21:27Speaker 1: would like to go because I think that would be
- 21:29Speaker 1: so free. I don't know. I just feel like it
- 21:31Speaker 1: would be so amazing first of all to see and
- 21:34Speaker 1: so freeing.
- 21:35Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Why I would to an island.
- 21:38Speaker 4: I mean that's what I do any.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Time when I go to an island. I usually well
- 21:42Speaker 1: I used to do not anymore, but I used to
- 21:43Speaker 1: drink a lot, so I would be I would make
- 21:46Speaker 1: unconscious so and I have a hangover, so that wouldn't
- 21:51Speaker 1: help me. But yeah, the beaches, I love the beach.
- 21:54Speaker 1: I think the beaches are very cleansing area. Kidding aside,
- 21:57Speaker 1: that I I think I agree with you. I think
- 22:00Speaker 1: the sea, the seawater and and the ocean and the sand.
- 22:04Speaker 1: It's just it's like a very cleansing feeling, and I
- 22:07Speaker 1: think it's great for body and soul.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Of course I love it.
- 22:11Speaker 1: You're right, and I do. And I find myself that
- 22:13Speaker 1: I feel the most commons when I'm at wh I'm
- 22:15Speaker 1: where I'm at my beach rust. I do love it there,
- 22:17Speaker 1: so I should I should make sure that I could
- 22:20Speaker 1: get I could should be there every day just getting
- 22:22Speaker 1: up in there so I feel better in the morning.
- 22:25Speaker 1: But do you have your your your book? Is this
- 22:31Speaker 1: about your journey or is it about your it's about
- 22:34Speaker 1: your the meditation, or is it just about your life?
- 22:38Speaker 1: All three?
- 22:39Speaker 3: So there's just themes that I just really wanted to
- 22:44Speaker 3: echo throughout like parts of my journey. So I kind
- 22:48Speaker 3: of the way I wrote it was to kind of
- 22:51Speaker 3: like take some highlights, take some pretty dark times, and
- 22:56Speaker 3: take some like full circled you know, moments where like
- 23:00Speaker 3: readers can like see how you started here and then
- 23:05Speaker 3: it came back and it's there, Yeah, exactly. So yeah,
- 23:10Speaker 3: I just take bits and pieces, like for example, there's
- 23:12Speaker 3: a part of like skydiving. Like the beginning starts off
- 23:15Speaker 3: with like skydiving, and you know, become like not how
- 23:22Speaker 3: would I say this, like falling short of something? But
- 23:27Speaker 3: when you but it's like a it was kind of like,
- 23:31Speaker 3: oh no, no, of course, yeah no, So like one
- 23:36Speaker 3: part is skydiving because I feel like a lot. I
- 23:39Speaker 3: wrote that because you know, growing up, I had fear,
- 23:42Speaker 3: and you know, when you conquer the fear, you kind
- 23:45Speaker 3: of look fear straight in the eye and say, I'm
- 23:47Speaker 3: no longer scared of you anymore. But you know, the
- 23:50Speaker 3: way my dad kind of taught me about what fear was.
- 23:53Speaker 3: He would say, fear is what you see when you
- 23:55Speaker 3: take your eyes off of the goal.
- 23:57Speaker 4: And that's amazing.
- 23:58Speaker 1: That's an amazing quote. I love that.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Yeah, And in that moment, my goal was survival and
- 24:03Speaker 3: to have fun.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Well, whatever you're doing, I mean, you have aspired. You
- 24:12Speaker 1: look well, look what you've accomplished. I mean on the NBA,
- 24:16Speaker 1: writing a book. You're an intelligent man. You have a
- 24:19Speaker 1: good education, I mean you have you have really you
- 24:24Speaker 1: have comfortable, so Carol in your life, right, So where
- 24:26Speaker 1: do you see yourself going now in the next five years,
- 24:30Speaker 1: Let's say.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Oh, five years.
- 24:33Speaker 1: That's like a job into view what is yourself in
- 24:37Speaker 1: five years?
- 24:40Speaker 4: In five years?
- 24:43Speaker 3: Oh, that's a that's a hard question.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Why would you have a way would you like to
- 24:48Speaker 1: see yourself?
- 24:49Speaker 4: Yeah? I would.
- 24:50Speaker 3: I would definitely like to, you know, help other people
- 24:53Speaker 3: write their books, because that took me five years, and
- 24:57Speaker 3: like within that time period, I wrote two other books.
- 25:01Speaker 3: But this made this just made the most sense, you know,
- 25:04Speaker 3: when I spoke to my advisor. But I would definitely
- 25:07Speaker 3: want to help, you know, some some type of philanthropy,
- 25:11Speaker 3: help people tell their stories, you know, in an impactful
- 25:14Speaker 3: way where it's not just like this is my story.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Like the way I wrote these chapters is like from
- 25:21Speaker 3: each chapter you'll be able to learn something from it
- 25:24Speaker 3: where you can take notes, where you can take your
- 25:26Speaker 3: highlighter and highlight it and be like, how can I
- 25:29Speaker 3: apply this to my life? And and I think that
- 25:32Speaker 3: would be awesome. Maybe still play, still be playing?
- 25:39Speaker 1: Well, you have a you have a great listen. I
- 25:42Speaker 1: think you're awesome. You have you know, have such a
- 25:44Speaker 1: good energy about your your wonderful you like actually make
- 25:48Speaker 1: me calm that you you have great Energy's.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Last absolutely ya amazing.
- 25:59Speaker 1: You know what I didn't like it first because I
- 26:00Speaker 1: couldn't breathe the first time I was in there and
- 26:03Speaker 1: pretty much wanted them. I was like breaking down the
- 26:05Speaker 1: door and they're like, no, you can't leave it go no,
- 26:07Speaker 1: I need to leave. But you know what it was again,
- 26:10Speaker 1: it was the fear of that that hot They will,
- 26:13Speaker 1: you know, calm, relaxed, breathe and I got through it.
- 26:17Speaker 1: But I didn't like it at first, but now I
- 26:19Speaker 1: love it.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Now.
- 26:19Speaker 1: It's like, wow, I have to stop going back. I
- 26:21Speaker 1: haven't had a chance to do. So we'll take a class
- 26:24Speaker 1: together and I'm going to get some more of your
