- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 169! Can you believe it? We've learned so much. Lucas: We sure have. And today we're going to talk about a Swahili food staple — ugali. Luna: Ugali? I've heard of it. Isn't it like a cornmeal porridge? Lucas: Exactly. It's a dense, dough-like dish made from maize flour, often served with stew or fish. Very common in East Africa. Luna: Oh, I want to try it. So, how do I order ugali? Do I just say 'Nataka ugali'? Lucas: Perfect. 'Nataka ugali' means 'I want ugali.' Let's say it together: Nataka ugali. Luna: Nataka ugali. Lucas: Good. Now, if you want ugali with fish, you say 'Ugali na samaki, tafadhali.' That's 'Ugali with fish, please.' Repeat after me: Ugali na samaki, tafadhali. Luna: Ugali na samaki, tafadhali. Lucas: Excellent. Or with meat: 'Ugali na nyama, tafadhali.' Nyama is meat. Luna: Ugali na nyama, tafadhali. Lucas: You've got it. Now, sometimes they ask 'Ugali gani?' — 'What kind of ugali?' The most common is 'Ugali wa mahindi' — corn ugali. Luna: Ugali gani? Ugali wa mahindi. Lucas: Right. And to ask the price: 'Bei gani ya ugali?' — 'What is the price of ugali?' Luna: Bei gani ya ugali? Lucas: And a possible answer: 'Ugali ni shilingi elfu moja' — 'Ugali is one thousand shillings.' Luna: Ugali ni shilingi elfu moja. Got it. Lucas: Let's practice a mini conversation. I'll be the vendor. You come and order. Luna: Okay. Nataka ugali. Lucas: Ugali gani? Luna: Ugali na samaki, tafadhali. Lucas: Bei gani ya ugali? Luna: Ugali ni shilingi elfu moja. Lucas: Perfect flow! You just ordered ugali with fish like a pro. Luna: That was fun. I can already imagine eating it.
