- 0:00Speaker 1: We're gonna need a bigger boat. It's one more thing.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm one more thing. That is a quote from the
- 0:08Speaker 1: movie Jaws, back when we used to make American movies,
- 0:12Speaker 1: which we'll start making again now with a new one
- 0:14Speaker 1: hundred percent tariff on foreign films, make fake sharks great again.
- 0:19Speaker 2: That's probably in your pantheon of like your top, if
- 0:24Speaker 2: not ten, top twenty all time recognizable movie quotes, isn't
- 0:30Speaker 2: it true, gonna need a bigger boat. Yeah, yeah, Anyway,
- 0:34Speaker 2: I thought this was at least mildly interesting. Michael is
- 0:37Speaker 2: just back from a trip to the shore, correct, Michael,
- 0:40Speaker 2: that is correct. Yeah, yeah, the Mighty Pacific where the
- 0:43Speaker 2: Great White haunts the depths and choose on seals, et cetera.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 3: The wife and I just wanted to escape, and we
- 0:49Speaker 3: wanted to get into nature. So that's what we do.
- 0:51Speaker 3: We go out to the ocean and just sit there
- 0:53Speaker 3: on the coast.
- 0:54Speaker 2: You know.
- 0:54Speaker 1: That's fantastic. Yep.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Do you ever do any tide pooling.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I've done that once or twice, but generally I just,
- 1:01Speaker 3: you know, just sit there and just relax, close the eyes.
- 1:04Speaker 1: My youngest son especially loves the whole pide pooling thing.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Oh is that right? Yeah?
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Judy and I we both love it. We've for
- 1:11Speaker 2: years and years and years since we first got married. Anytime,
- 1:13Speaker 2: we're especially at the Pacific Ocean because it's much rockier
- 1:17Speaker 2: than the Atlantic, which mostly just sand, which is great.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I feel like beaches and the water is warmer, but
- 1:22Speaker 2: the rocky inlets and stuff of the Pacific are just
- 1:27Speaker 2: dream come true. If you're into tide pulling. The number
- 1:29Speaker 2: of fascinating little creatures you can observe. If you're into
- 1:31Speaker 2: that sort of thing, it's really cool.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So read Steinbeck's Cannery Road to learn more.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Oh wow, I don't. I think I read that in
- 1:40Speaker 2: high school.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, another one of those books you should read
- 1:42Speaker 1: when you're older.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, you're like, Okay, he's angsty and wants that
- 1:47Speaker 2: they have a different life. There's something I don't know.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Can we go chase girls and try to get beer?
- 1:53Speaker 1: Anyway?
- 1:55Speaker 2: So, speaking of the sea shore and sharks, is there
- 1:59Speaker 2: any phenomenon in human life that gets more attention relative
- 2:09Speaker 2: to its actual significance than shark attacks? Winning the lottery?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Maybe? I mean, like anything, I don't. I don't think
- 2:21Speaker 1: that's even close. There's no significance to a shark attack
- 2:23Speaker 1: really winning the lottery there, there's some human element, story,
- 2:27Speaker 1: the way people handle it and stuff that you could
- 2:29Speaker 1: you know, you could do write long papers about. There's
- 2:32Speaker 1: nothing to a shark attack. It's very, very rare. The
- 2:36Speaker 1: whole story is in one sentence, you got by a
- 2:38Speaker 1: shark and died.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Or survived. It sucks hard if you are the bye tea.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Lord knows, but I mean incredibly all Lord, it's so
- 2:50Speaker 2: incredibly infrequent, but we spend a lot of time thinking
- 2:52Speaker 2: about it and talking about it and reporting out it on.
- 2:54Speaker 1: The news and that sort of thing. Do you have
- 2:55Speaker 1: any fear of that. I've never worried about it once
- 2:57Speaker 1: in my life.
- 2:58Speaker 2: A little bit, A little bit I did as a kid.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I'm from Kansas and didn't see the ocean until I
- 3:03Speaker 1: was twenty. That's part of it.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I would say, you don't get to brag
- 3:07Speaker 2: about your courage. And Judy and I spend a fair
- 3:11Speaker 2: amount of time on the Atlantic coast these days, and
- 3:14Speaker 2: I don't worry about it, but I'm aware of it.
- 3:18Speaker 2: But generally it's somebody. Shark nips at somebody to see
- 3:21Speaker 2: what they are and think. So God that's not a
- 3:23Speaker 2: seal air and moves on. It's fatalities are very very rare.
- 3:28Speaker 2: But you know, if you got blood rushing out of
- 3:30Speaker 2: your lower leg, that's a long day. I mean, you're
- 3:32Speaker 2: gonna have a long, unpleasant day. Having said that, I
- 3:38Speaker 2: read this entire article about how they're coming up with
- 3:42Speaker 2: suits for people who are in the ocean of fair amount, surfers, divers,
- 3:48Speaker 2: whatever that use LED lights on the suit, just one here,
- 3:54Speaker 2: one there, one air and it disrupts the silhouette of
- 3:59Speaker 2: an objecked like a surfer for instance, or seal decoys,
- 4:04Speaker 2: which is how they're trying to figure out if this
- 4:06Speaker 2: works or not.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But the shark is trying to figure out what that is.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And if you break up the silhouette of it so
- 4:13Speaker 2: it appears to be a couple of different things by
- 4:15Speaker 2: having an LED light right in the middle of it,
- 4:18Speaker 2: the shark's like it, I don't know what that is,
- 4:19Speaker 2: but it's sure not a seal, and it moves on.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So they think the greatest shark attack avoidance mechanism or
- 4:28Speaker 2: method they've ever come up with, these little LED lights
- 4:31Speaker 2: that just confuse the shark's eyes.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Well, doesn't that put a skip in my step that
- 4:35Speaker 1: they've eliminated one of the one in a billion ways
- 4:38Speaker 1: that I could die the most likely.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Spend your time in the ocean. No, no, you don't
- 4:44Speaker 2: get to play the hard ass here.
- 4:47Speaker 1: You don't get to Can you come and put anything
- 4:49Speaker 1: with like heart disease or car rex or anything that
- 4:52Speaker 1: might get me? Ooh, guy got et by a bear
- 4:56Speaker 1: the other day. And where was it? It was one
- 4:57Speaker 1: of your eastern states?
- 4:59Speaker 2: Yeah, him and his dog too fluffy anyway, So I
- 5:07Speaker 2: don't know.
- 5:07Speaker 1: The dog didn't occupy the bear long enough that he
- 5:09Speaker 1: could get away, or maybe he wasn't that kind of guy.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I'm hurling my dog at the bear and run.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Oh wow, wow, I'm running.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I believe in a hierarchy. You know, my family needs
- 5:23Speaker 1: me more than you. Pop occupy this bear while I
- 5:26Speaker 1: get in feats don't fail me? Now.
- 5:30Speaker 2: You know it takes a certain kind of guy to
- 5:33Speaker 2: admit that out loud, But you're one hundred percent ride.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Heck yeah, I mean if I were to and I
- 5:39Speaker 2: can barely make these words come out of my mouth,
- 5:41Speaker 2: if Judy and I are hiking.
- 5:43Speaker 1: You're gonna shove Judy at the bear.
- 5:47Speaker 2: With our dog oh, I was.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Thinking of the same thing, and I hurl.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I was pausing for effect, let me do my art,
- 6:01Speaker 2: and I heard a hurl poor Baxter at the bear.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Oh my god, I find that so repugnant I can
- 6:10Speaker 2: bury it in my mouth.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It's interesting, this kid. This came up just the other day.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Who was I with? And they thought it was horrific
- 6:16Speaker 1: that I said that. To me, it's just like her
- 6:18Speaker 1: percent the obvious choice. I got two kids I got
- 6:21Speaker 1: to take care of and support. Hmm, I'm not you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: they say, whoever was who was I with? But they said,
- 6:27Speaker 1: oh no, I would protect the dog. I'd probably get it.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You're nuts.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Well, this reminds me this might be like
- 6:34Speaker 2: the ultimate test of something I like to talk about
- 6:37Speaker 2: on the show, which is how there are certain people
- 6:41Speaker 2: who are willing to deal with unpleasant adult realities. And
- 6:47Speaker 2: I'm trying to remember of a good example of an
- 6:49Speaker 2: issue that I've talked about this before.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But you get certain.
- 6:51Speaker 2: People who say we've got to do something, and you say, well,
- 6:55Speaker 2: that's not going to work. It's a waste of money
- 6:57Speaker 2: and it's abusive to the taxpayers. But we've got to
- 7:00Speaker 2: do something, you know, okay, Well, unless you can come
- 7:04Speaker 2: up with something smart, we're not going to do anything.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Those people have to figure it out for themselves. Are
- 7:10Speaker 2: you willing to confront unpleasant reality or not? If the
- 7:15Speaker 2: answer is not, if you are not willing to admit
- 7:19Speaker 2: you would hurl your dog at thet a bear's hungry jaws.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna lob him high in the air to even
- 7:25Speaker 1: give myself more time, right off I go?
- 7:29Speaker 2: Yes, Yes, a trick employed by many A brother, perhaps
- 7:34Speaker 2: while playing rough with his other brothers, Sure tosses the
- 7:37Speaker 2: ball a little high in the air, then belly tackles
- 7:39Speaker 2: his brother while he's looking up it.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Uh yeah, that's exactly right.
- 7:44Speaker 2: If you are not willing to admit you would hurl
- 7:48Speaker 2: your dog at the bear, you cannot be in charge
- 7:51Speaker 2: of anything.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I might yell thank you, pop pup. I'll remember you
- 7:55Speaker 1: over my shoulder as I run. You're a good dog.
- 7:58Speaker 1: We're a good dog.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Right right, yeah, okay, anyway, where were we? I guess
- 8:06Speaker 2: we probably did enough of the shark attack thing. I
- 8:09Speaker 2: just I find it interesting that somebody had this idea
- 8:12Speaker 2: and it actually works.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Cool. It'll probably become very standard. It might be the
- 8:18Speaker 1: end of a shark attack.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I wonder, Yeah, put them on the bottom of
- 8:23Speaker 2: surfboards and all, because a surfboard with like a couple
- 8:26Speaker 2: of hands paddling looks just like a seal.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Do you, Michael, you're at the beach with your wife. Yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 1: just sitting on the beach, you said. But yeah, were
- 8:36Speaker 1: you literally just sitting there, like staring out at the water,
- 8:39Speaker 1: or were you reading or listening to music or.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Just sitting there and we were just talking.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Okay, talking amongst yourself.
- 8:45Speaker 2: We were talking.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Actually, you know, she wants me to and when she
- 8:49Speaker 3: gets cremated to put her ashes around you know, the
- 8:53Speaker 3: coast and stuff like that. So I asked her, you know,
- 8:56Speaker 3: where would you like? So we were trying to decide
- 8:57Speaker 3: on spots.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Actually, she'll murder you long before that's necessary.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Pretty young for that conversation. I'd be a little concerned that.
- 9:04Speaker 3: She's oh, no, up, Yeah, she's doing fine. But it's
- 9:07Speaker 3: just you know, she was thinking about it, and so
- 9:09Speaker 3: I asked.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I could sit there and watch the waves for
- 9:12Speaker 2: an hour without the slightest boredom.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I could do it right now. I don't know, I'm
- 9:19Speaker 1: gonna what if you miss a TikTok.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Oh, Lord, drown him. Drown him right now. He's feeding
- 9:28Speaker 2: dogs to bears. He's scrolling through TikTok and Nature's wonders.
- 9:32Speaker 1: A monster, you know.
- 9:35Speaker 3: The wife and I were at the State Fair and
- 9:37Speaker 3: a carnee approached me, and so I grabbed my wife
- 9:39Speaker 3: and pulled it right in front of me so she
- 9:42Speaker 3: could engaged.
- 9:45Speaker 1: You did, well, I guess that's it.
