- 0:06Speaker 1: Good money, good money, Good morning, and welcome, Welcome, Welcome.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It is time now for car Talk, brought to you
- 0:11Speaker 1: by the Dungeons Family of Autos.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Jason is in the House of Jason. You brought friends,
- 0:17Speaker 2: I sure did.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I brought in Kevin Connor. We're gonna talk a little
- 0:22Speaker 3: bit about airplanes, but first I thought we'd talk a
- 0:26Speaker 3: little bit about some cars.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Let's do that.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Let's let's do that, Tom. So, we've got a lot
- 0:33Speaker 3: of really good things going on over at Dungeons Ford
- 0:36Speaker 3: and Dungeons Toyota. You know, of course, on the Dungeons
- 0:40Speaker 3: Ford side, we're really uh, we're basically trying to sell
- 0:44Speaker 3: everything including the you know, the chairs in the hikes chairs,
- 0:51Speaker 3: so anything we've We've got about another month before we
- 0:57Speaker 3: make our transition and new ownership over over at Dungeons Ford.
- 1:01Speaker 3: But in the meantime we're making some really heck of
- 1:05Speaker 3: good deals right now. The Ford Edge has a lot
- 1:12Speaker 3: of really good incentive money from Ford itself. So Tom,
- 1:19Speaker 3: you can get into a Ford Edge about nine thousand
- 1:24Speaker 3: dollars off of MSRP.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Right now, nine thousand dollars off.
- 1:30Speaker 3: It's kind of one of those confluences of things where
- 1:34Speaker 3: Ford is. You know, they're getting out of the edge
- 1:37Speaker 3: and escape business, and they're discounting the vehicles so greatly.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Sixty five hundred dollars from Ford or six six thousand
- 1:46Speaker 3: dollars from Ford, and then Brad has another couple of
- 1:50Speaker 3: thousand dollars of Dungeon's discount on them. It's probably one
- 1:56Speaker 3: of the best car deals I have ever seen in
- 1:58Speaker 3: my life. So brand new, twenty twenty four, great vehicle,
- 2:04Speaker 3: great gas mileage, lots of storage, great little suv. If
- 2:10Speaker 3: you haven't seen it, seen it, I really encourage you
- 2:13Speaker 3: to come in and check it out. We also on
- 2:17Speaker 3: the Toyota side, have some really wonderful deals and we're
- 2:22Speaker 3: stocking up right now. You may have driven by a lot.
- 2:26Speaker 3: They're on Highway seventy five just south of Newada, and
- 2:30Speaker 3: notice that we have a lot of Toyotas. At this point,
- 2:34Speaker 3: it's finally starting to happen. The manufacturing is catching up
- 2:38Speaker 3: with the demand. And not only do we have a
- 2:43Speaker 3: large assortment of new toyotas, we also have a real
- 2:48Speaker 3: large collection of pre owned Toyotas, and we're aggressively purchasing
- 2:54Speaker 3: use toyotas. So if you're rocketing their value. So well,
- 2:58Speaker 3: I really do you're driving around with a Toyota that
- 3:04Speaker 3: or have one in the garage that doesn't get driven. Boy,
- 3:08Speaker 3: give us a call. We're making really aggressive deals on
- 3:12Speaker 3: used toyotas. Yeah. So we also going back to Ford.
- 3:21Speaker 3: You know, one of the things that we've been really
- 3:23Speaker 3: talking about a lot lately, both here on the show
- 3:27Speaker 3: and you know, frankly to our customers, are some of
- 3:31Speaker 3: the least deals that are out there. So if you
- 3:35Speaker 3: have a small business or you're a driver who you
- 3:39Speaker 3: know doesn't put on a ton of mileage per year,
- 3:45Speaker 3: Ford has some lease incentives right now. For thirty six months,
- 3:50Speaker 3: you can lease an F one fifty XLT crew cab.
- 3:54Speaker 3: It's a four x four with a two point six
- 3:58Speaker 3: V six echo boost in and it's great mileage five
- 4:03Speaker 3: seventeen a month for thirty six months. That is considerably
- 4:09Speaker 3: less than what it would be if you were making
- 4:13Speaker 3: payments on a on a vehicle. And then on the
- 4:17Speaker 3: on the toyota side, we also have some really wonderful
- 4:21Speaker 3: incentives right now. You can lease a new Tacoma twenty
- 4:24Speaker 3: twenty four for as little as three sixty nine a
- 4:28Speaker 3: month if you're if you're a small businessman, business person
- 4:35Speaker 3: and you can work the ride office on a lease, boy,
- 4:43Speaker 3: that's a.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Great way to go.
- 4:46Speaker 4: It sure is.
- 4:49Speaker 3: So Tom, let's talk airplanes now that we've talked to cars.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Well, yeah, you got cars flying off the lot, but
- 4:57Speaker 1: we've got some airplanes that be flying there coming in.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Yeah. So this weekend is the Bartlesville fly In, and
- 5:05Speaker 3: I'd like to introduce Kevin O'Connor, and Kevin has helped
- 5:10Speaker 3: organize the fly in and I'm blanking on the name
- 5:13Speaker 3: of the organization. Kevin, let's introduce yourself for us.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm Kevin Connor.
- 5:17Speaker 5: I'm chairing the flying committee for the back to Bartlesville
- 5:20Speaker 5: Regional fly In and it'll be a great event.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Hopefully we have excellent weather for the fly in and.
- 5:30Speaker 5: So we are bringing back to fly in here in Bartlesville.
- 5:36Speaker 5: That many years ago, Bartlesfield was the home of the
- 5:40Speaker 5: National Biplane Association.
- 5:41Speaker 3: We used to have the annual Steerman fly In or
- 5:45Speaker 3: the Biplane.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Flying Biplane Expo or referred to. Yeah, that went for
- 5:50Speaker 5: twenty two years. So last year was two thousand and
- 5:53Speaker 5: nine and a lot of.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Folks don't know this.
- 5:58Speaker 5: I remember those days, and I remember that organizer, mister
- 6:01Speaker 5: Charles Harris, and it was actually the largest gathering of
- 6:07Speaker 5: biplanes in the world right here.
- 6:09Speaker 4: In Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
- 6:10Speaker 3: That's pretty amazing.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Is amazing.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Yeah, And the National Biplane Association was founded here in
- 6:16Speaker 5: Bartlesville by Charles Harris and a group of board members
- 6:20Speaker 5: that he assembled in and so I felt like enough
- 6:24Speaker 5: time it lapsed and I felt like there was a
- 6:27Speaker 5: you know, there's a good appetite for a fly in
- 6:30Speaker 5: to return to Bartlesville and so, and that's one of
- 6:33Speaker 5: the reasons it's referred to as the back to Bartlesville
- 6:36Speaker 5: Regional fly in.
- 6:37Speaker 3: And if people aren't familiar with a fly in, basically
- 6:42Speaker 3: it is exactly what it sounds like. People will come
- 6:46Speaker 3: in from. How far do you have people coming in
- 6:51Speaker 3: from all over the country? I assume anybody from international.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Not from international, yeah, that I know of anyway.
- 6:58Speaker 5: But typically the fly in, we'll have people come in
- 7:00Speaker 5: from about a five state area, mostly from Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas.
- 7:06Speaker 5: But when we established this idea to bring the fly
- 7:09Speaker 5: in back, I had spoken with Mike Richardson, the airport
- 7:12Speaker 5: director here at Bartlesville, which has been around a long
- 7:15Speaker 5: time and has a lot of experience. And Mike was
- 7:18Speaker 5: involved in those fly ins back during the biplane Expo days.
- 7:22Speaker 5: So I spoke with him and you know, we kind
- 7:25Speaker 5: of kicked around the idea and he was very much
- 7:28Speaker 5: interested in having.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Uh uh you know, the fly flying event here in Bartlesville.
- 7:34Speaker 5: And so we organized and had as symble some excellent
- 7:38Speaker 5: committee members and committed to it. And we did our
- 7:40Speaker 5: first fly in last year, uh and we had a
- 7:44Speaker 5: few weather issues, but we still had a wonderful, relaxed
- 7:48Speaker 5: atmosphere at the fly in and it was great for
- 7:50Speaker 5: you know, for a family, you know, place for you
- 7:55Speaker 5: to bring your family, your kids, learn a little bit
- 7:57Speaker 5: about aviation and uh and then also a little bit
- 8:00Speaker 5: about World War II history.
- 8:02Speaker 4: As well at the fly in.
- 8:03Speaker 3: That's that. And I remember being young and going out.
- 8:11Speaker 3: You can touch an airplane when you're eight, and that
- 8:15Speaker 3: sets something off in a kid.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Absolutely, yes, yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Absolutely, So what are some of the types of planes
- 8:22Speaker 3: that are flying in? What are you bringing? You said,
- 8:24Speaker 3: do you fly a Steerman?
- 8:26Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:27Speaker 5: I own a Steerman nineteen forty three mileel Steerman biplane
- 8:30Speaker 5: referred to as a stocked Steerman powered with the two
- 8:33Speaker 5: hundred and twenty horsepower Continental which was stocked from the
- 8:36Speaker 5: factory from Boeing.
- 8:37Speaker 4: It was built, of course as a trainer.
- 8:39Speaker 5: In World War Two, most pilots that completed their primary
- 8:43Speaker 5: flight training, the most popular, most used was the Steerman
- 8:46Speaker 5: biplane and also the PT nineteen as well the.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Fair Child open open cockpit, all open.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Cockpit, and so there'll be a few of the Steerman biplanes,
- 8:56Speaker 5: but kind of the highlight and the centerpiece will be
- 8:59Speaker 5: an aircraft. It's owned by the World War Two Airborne
- 9:02Speaker 5: Demonstration Team, which is a group out of southern Oklahoma.
- 9:06Speaker 5: That airplane is it's a military DC three, but they
- 9:10Speaker 5: designated designator.
- 9:12Speaker 4: I'm sorry for it. It's a Douglas C forty nine.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Now, the original Douglas C forty seven that people that
- 9:18Speaker 5: know about World War two history understand what the C
- 9:20Speaker 5: forty seven is. It's a DC three design, but it
- 9:25Speaker 5: was equipped and outfitted for the military.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Then the Douglas C forty nine.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Basically it's the same airplane, but it's powered with different engines.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yeah, some of those were built. Were they built in Tulsa.
- 9:42Speaker 5: There were some of the Douglas aircraft, the SEA forty
- 9:45Speaker 5: sevens that were built in Oklahoma City. Yeah, our particular
- 9:49Speaker 5: aircraft was built out in California. Now there was the
- 9:53Speaker 5: plant in Tulsa you might be referring to is where
- 9:55Speaker 5: there was a very large number of the B twenty
- 9:58Speaker 5: four Liberators were built in Tulsa.
- 10:00Speaker 4: That's it, absolutely, And.
- 10:05Speaker 3: So the C forty seven, is there an opportunity for
- 10:11Speaker 3: maybe a ride around town?
- 10:13Speaker 5: Well, what we do is when you get into what
- 10:15Speaker 5: we call a rides program, it gets into a different
- 10:18Speaker 5: set of FA regulations.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Yes it does.
- 10:20Speaker 5: And so sore we are not We do not have
- 10:23Speaker 5: the proper credentials or have applied or establish.
- 10:26Speaker 4: What we call a rides program.
- 10:27Speaker 5: However we do, we are allowed to and we are
- 10:31Speaker 5: some of our sponsors that wait in on this event
- 10:34Speaker 5: to support our event. We'll be doing a sponsor ride.
- 10:37Speaker 5: I'm going to plan it around one o'clock PM on Saturday,
- 10:40Speaker 5: so we'll we'll start up the airplane and we'll take
- 10:44Speaker 5: it around a few circle around town and give our
- 10:47Speaker 5: sponsors a ride. And as a courtesy is a thank
- 10:50Speaker 5: you to our sponsors. And we've had a tremendous amount
- 10:52Speaker 5: of support. So be able to see Wildcat that's our
- 10:55Speaker 5: nose art on the World War Two nose arts referred
- 10:57Speaker 5: to as Wildcat, and can explain that a little bit, Yeah,
- 11:01Speaker 5: if you would as Wildcat. You know, in the early
- 11:04Speaker 5: days of oil production, these the heavy hitters were referred
- 11:08Speaker 5: to as wildcatters, and so that's where we came up
- 11:11Speaker 5: with our nose art for this airplane. And we have
- 11:15Speaker 5: the girl on the nose you know, from nineteen forties
- 11:19Speaker 5: or so, and so that's where we came up with
- 11:22Speaker 5: the nose art in the name to name our airplane
- 11:24Speaker 5: is Wildcat.
- 11:25Speaker 3: That is beautiful. Yeah, that is beautiful. Absolutely. Yeah. If
- 11:32Speaker 3: if you have an interest in aircraft or if you
- 11:35Speaker 3: want to come out and you know, bring a couple
- 11:38Speaker 3: of kids, which again at least park something.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Yeah, we wanted to be educational as well about aircraft.
- 11:48Speaker 5: We love to take you know, to talk about World
- 11:50Speaker 5: War Two history and share that with the public from
- 11:53Speaker 5: an educational standpoint.
- 11:54Speaker 4: But we also we have Wildcat on the ground.
- 11:57Speaker 5: We conduct tours of the airplane because our aircraft is
- 12:01Speaker 5: equipped with original World War Two paratrooper seats in the
- 12:04Speaker 5: airplane and we use the airplane for parachute training. Down
- 12:10Speaker 5: in southern Oklahoma. We have three jump schools a year
- 12:12Speaker 5: wow there. And so we bring people on the airplane,
- 12:16Speaker 5: set them in troop seats, hand them a static line
- 12:18Speaker 5: because that's what we do, is static parachute jump operations,
- 12:21Speaker 5: the same as they did in World War Two. And
- 12:23Speaker 5: we can take them through a scenario, a jump scenario,
- 12:25Speaker 5: and experience that actually on the airplane.
- 12:28Speaker 4: It's quite an experience, that's pretty amazing.
- 12:31Speaker 3: It's one thing I've never really had an interest in doing,
- 12:34Speaker 3: is jumping out of an airplane.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I've never perfectly fine vehicle.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. So if you want to show up, do
- 12:46Speaker 3: we need to register online or just come out to
- 12:49Speaker 3: the airport.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Just come to the airport.
- 12:52Speaker 5: If you go to Bartlesfield flyin dot com, it's our
- 12:56Speaker 5: homepage and there are some a lot of information they're
- 13:01Speaker 5: about to fly in the different airplanes.
- 13:03Speaker 4: It'll be there.
- 13:04Speaker 5: But also it shows where you enter into off of
- 13:08Speaker 5: Highway sixty down Sunset over.
- 13:11Speaker 4: To the airport to the parking area.
- 13:13Speaker 5: All those illustrations are on there and information about parking.
- 13:18Speaker 5: We don't really have a fee. We just we just
- 13:20Speaker 5: have an admission of ten dollars per car load.
- 13:22Speaker 2: As many people as you can fit you in.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and We're glad to have it.
- 13:26Speaker 5: Yeah, so ten dollars a car load, if however many
- 13:29Speaker 5: you can squeeze in there and you enter into the
- 13:33Speaker 5: parking area. Once you're established in the parking area, you
- 13:35Speaker 5: can We'll have some tractors. We have a wonderful sponsor,
- 13:39Speaker 5: Jents and Tractors. Oh yeah, and they we have some.
- 13:42Speaker 5: We have some what we call the people movers, and
- 13:45Speaker 5: you can have a seat on the people mover and
- 13:47Speaker 5: it'll move you from the parking area up to the
- 13:49Speaker 5: main display area.
- 13:50Speaker 3: That makes it easy. Be sure and schmear on some
- 13:53Speaker 3: suntan lootion before you come out. Absolute So, how many
- 13:59Speaker 3: people are are you expecting? What?
- 14:01Speaker 5: Well, last year, based on last year's numbers, we had
- 14:05Speaker 5: a matter of fact, I just looked at it last night.
- 14:07Speaker 5: We had about seventy two hundred vehicles that came into
- 14:10Speaker 5: the parking are because that's how we count the because
- 14:13Speaker 5: it's an admission of ten dollars per carlo. And so
- 14:17Speaker 5: we also did the event on a Friday Saturday. This
- 14:20Speaker 5: year will be a Saturday Sunday. So to be honest,
- 14:23Speaker 5: I'm kind of expecting about double that amount this year.
- 14:27Speaker 5: And as long as the weather's good. You know, it
- 14:31Speaker 5: should be a really good turnout. That is that is
- 14:35Speaker 5: quite a bit of turnout. Yeah, so.
- 14:40Speaker 3: I know, yeah, I'm blinking. So again. The website for
- 14:53Speaker 3: the fly in is Bartlesville hyphen Fly hyphen in dot com.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Correct.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Now you can get all the information about the weekend.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Hanging. A lot of tribute to the World War two era.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Yeah, and I can tell you about that.
- 15:10Speaker 5: So this year, a good friend of mine down in
- 15:14Speaker 5: that hangars a couple of bear planes down at Riverside
- 15:17Speaker 5: Airport in southern Tulsa. Mister Paul Mackie, he organized groups
- 15:22Speaker 5: a few years ago called the Tulsa war Birds. And
- 15:25Speaker 5: so the Tulsa war Birds are a group of AT
- 15:27Speaker 5: six Texans, which the AT is the Advanced Trainer. When
- 15:31Speaker 5: you've learned to fly in a Steerman, then you would
- 15:33Speaker 5: advance into maybe a basic trainer like a BT thirteen.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Then you would advance into the AT six, the.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Advanced trainer, and then from there you would go into
- 15:41Speaker 5: the transport category or the fighter category after your basic
- 15:44Speaker 5: training in the military.
- 15:46Speaker 4: So the AT six Texans.
- 15:47Speaker 5: There's a group of them there and they will be
- 15:50Speaker 5: coming up and doing some formation flyovers at the fly
- 15:54Speaker 5: on on both Saturday and Sunday, and then I also
- 15:56Speaker 5: spend a little bit of time on the ramp so
- 15:58Speaker 5: that folks can them up close and observe the airplanes,
- 16:01Speaker 5: talk a little bit about the airplane and the history
- 16:04Speaker 5: of the aircraft. And then we also have the we're
- 16:09Speaker 5: gonna We did this last year and it worked out
- 16:12Speaker 5: very well. We honored WASP pilots of World War Two,
- 16:16Speaker 5: and those are the Women's Air Service pilots that flew
- 16:19Speaker 5: in World War Two. And there's a little bit of
- 16:23Speaker 5: a special tie to Bartlesville with a particular WASP pilot.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Her name was Mary Jones, and I knew Mary personally.
- 16:31Speaker 5: And Mary graduated from WASP pilot training in the next
- 16:35Speaker 5: to the last class that they had in Sweetwater, Texas.
- 16:40Speaker 5: And Mary flew the Steerman as some of her basic training,
- 16:43Speaker 5: and then she primarily flew the Volti BT thirteen, which
- 16:48Speaker 5: was an aircraft that was used for it was a
- 16:51Speaker 5: basic trainer, but also they would install engines and run
- 16:54Speaker 5: the engines ins for a break in, then pull the
- 16:58Speaker 5: engines off kratim they'd ship them out overseas and so Mary, uh,
- 17:03Speaker 5: but Mary Jones, when you really dive down to where
- 17:07Speaker 5: the original idea for the biplane expote came from. It
- 17:10Speaker 5: was Mary Jones and then her and a gentleman named
- 17:14Speaker 5: Charles Harris, they came together and they made it happen
- 17:17Speaker 5: and made it reality. So when we last year we
- 17:22Speaker 5: recognized all Wasp pilots of World War Two, but in
- 17:25Speaker 5: particular we had Mary Jones in a little bit about
- 17:29Speaker 5: her history.
- 17:29Speaker 4: We recognized her right here at Bartlesville.
- 17:32Speaker 3: That is beautiful.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it was wonderful and we're going to do it
- 17:34Speaker 4: again this year.
- 17:37Speaker 5: And also with the Commemorative Air Force they have part
- 17:41Speaker 5: of one of their squadrons is referred to as the
- 17:44Speaker 5: Wasp Squadron. They're the Commmdative Air Force out of Texas.
- 17:48Speaker 5: We bring in a AT six Texan and also a
- 17:51Speaker 5: Steerman biplane and they'll be offering rides so you can
- 17:55Speaker 5: buy it.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Yeah, that's great.
- 17:56Speaker 5: You can go onto the website like you just mentioned,
- 17:59Speaker 5: you can scree Jewel ride.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Uh and they are wonderful.
- 18:03Speaker 5: The pilot that I met last year was absolutely amazing
- 18:06Speaker 5: and uh so you can experience a.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Ride on a warbird.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and you can fly this year. You can take
- 18:14Speaker 3: a ride on the steermen as well.
- 18:16Speaker 4: That's correct.
- 18:17Speaker 3: I encourage everyone to try that. It is it's it's well,
- 18:24Speaker 3: it's an open cockpit and it's a little bit like
- 18:28Speaker 3: being on a kite.
- 18:30Speaker 2: It is.
- 18:32Speaker 3: It is just an amazing feeling.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Yeah, and we also last year we recognized also had
- 18:40Speaker 5: a display of World War Two veterans from Bartlesville that served.
- 18:45Speaker 4: In World War Two and that was great display.
- 18:47Speaker 5: We're this year in the main display hangar, We're going
- 18:50Speaker 5: to have besides the UH we will have a WASP
- 18:53Speaker 5: display about WASP history.
- 18:55Speaker 4: We're also going to have the Girl Scouts. We'll be
- 19:00Speaker 4: present there and.
- 19:02Speaker 5: Have some information about Girl Scouts and probably weighing in
- 19:05Speaker 5: and maybe a little bit about.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Waspip history as well. We'll also have Boy Scouts and
- 19:10Speaker 4: also the Trail.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Life Group will be coming out and participating with us
- 19:15Speaker 5: in the main display hangars. So we love to have
- 19:18Speaker 5: the youth come from an educational standpoint and interact with
- 19:23Speaker 5: him and we love to have it.
- 19:24Speaker 4: We love to have them.
- 19:25Speaker 5: There and to be able to weigh in and be
- 19:28Speaker 5: apart and participate in the flying.
- 19:31Speaker 2: That's nice. That is really nice.
