Transcript
- 0:00It's Most things Kenobi. We always have the high ground.
- 0:17Hi everyone, welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a
- 0:20podcast about Obi Wan Kenobi in all things Star Wars.
- 0:24I'm your host, Leanne. And I'm your host, Lauren.
- 0:28And this week we are going to talk about the first three
- 0:31episodes of the Acolyte series, which episode 3 just aired.
- 0:36Episode 4 is coming up at the time of this recording.
- 0:38So we have both seen, and all of you have hopefully seen the
- 0:42first three episodes. So if you have not and you do
- 0:44not want spoilers, do not proceed past this point in this
- 0:48episode. That's your warning.
- 0:51Yeah, 'cause there's a lot to dive into here.
- 0:54There is in fact, the first episode is called Lost Found,
- 0:58episode 2 is called Revenge Justice, and episode 3 is titled
- 1:01Destiny, and that's the flashback episode which I have.
- 1:04I have a lot of thoughts about all this shit, but I have a lot
- 1:06of thoughts about episode 3. A lot of people had a lot of
- 1:10thoughts about episode 3. I actually researched and tried
- 1:14to read what other people are saying, not that it affects my
- 1:17opinion but I'm like am I alone? Am I not alone?
- 1:23Am I wrong for thinking certain things?
- 1:26But I'm not. It doesn't appear that I'm very
- 1:28far off the mark with like what I was thinking.
- 1:32OK, I'll be interested to. I did, I just saw some stuff.
- 1:37I just love how shitty we are as a fandom.
- 1:39Totally. Even if you don't like something
- 1:42I like, I don't feel the need to go out and fill Star Wars
- 1:46account with like negative comments.
- 1:48And shit, that is beyond insane. It's amazing like the shit
- 1:53people post, someone on the Star Wars account will post fan art
- 1:58of the show and someone in the comments rips it to shreds talks
- 2:03shit about Star Wars. Like just leave already just
- 2:07stop. You hate it fine go find a new
- 2:12fandom or just stick with your original 3.
- 2:15Stay in your bubble enjoy your life.
- 2:17Like holy shit, people. OK, well I'm not there.
- 2:21I just had questions like am I digesting this properly?
- 2:25Am I way off the mark? But.
- 2:27It's it's leaving a lot of questions.
- 2:30It is. I will say, OK, so I texted you
- 2:33after I watched exactly 12 minutes of the first episode and
- 2:37I said, I don't think I like this right?
- 2:40Which you're like, just chill. And I said, OK, I'll, I'll
- 2:44chill. That's essentially what you what
- 2:47you said. So I chilled and I watched the
- 2:49rest and I was, I was interested in the story.
- 2:52Story's OK. What do you think?
- 2:54Like there is a story. Let's start with this.
- 2:57There's an attempt at a story. Yes, unlike Mandalorian, where
- 3:02there's no story and we're just flailing aimlessly in the dark,
- 3:08this actually it's it reminded me of and or it starts on
- 3:11action. You begin in the story and you
- 3:14just go. And I really like that.
- 3:16Yes, and then they pulled the old fast one on me, which they
- 3:19didn't 'cause I I saw it coming. OK, no, I predicted it right
- 3:23away. I guess I don't have to be vague
- 3:25anymore because we gave the spoiler more so.
- 3:28All right. So I assumed that it was either
- 3:31someone with a facial cloaking device or a twin, right?
- 3:36So I was, I was, I was right on the twin part.
- 3:39Twins in Star Wars. Wow, crazy.
- 3:43No. I mean, they're 100% ripping off
- 3:46Anakin's storyline, which is like, OK, And you said it.
- 3:51You're like storylines are recycled in Star Wars on a day
- 3:55that ends and. Why, Yeah, I mean, it's, it's
- 3:58disappointing a bit as a as a fan because as, as we've said,
- 4:02it undermines the story itself that's already been written.
- 4:07And so that is very disappointing.
- 4:10But kudos to the actual fucking actress who's playing two
- 4:13different roles and doing it extremely well.
- 4:16Like I love to see a strong female protagonist who's also an
- 4:23antagonist. Like it's great because it's
- 4:25like 2 halves of one, only it's actually physical this time.
- 4:29It's not like some supposed light and dark.
- 4:32It's we're getting both I guess I don't know.
- 4:34I don't know yet, because we don't know yet.
- 4:38Yeah, I mean, we are obviously we've we've not got the whole
- 4:41story and I don't think this is going to wrap up in one season,
- 4:44do you? I'm pretty sure this this show
- 4:46is going to probably have more than one season.
- 4:48They'll leave us on a cliffhanger.
- 4:50I think it's the first of all, the acting is really good.
- 4:55The cinematography is really good.
- 4:56I saw somebody wrote like it's cheap looking.
- 5:00It looks like garbage. I'm like, have you watched the
- 5:04other shows that weren't filmed on location?
- 5:07I I thought the location. Gets a backdrop.
- 5:09Yeah, I mean, I thought the location choices were great.
- 5:12I love seeing new planets. We're getting a lot of new
- 5:15planets, which is great. And they're really cool looking.
- 5:19Yeah, they are cool looking. Like for instance the witches in
- 5:23episode 3, How the fuck did they live in that thing?
- 5:26Like that was I don't know the location.
- 5:32At the end, when it's like on fire, my boyfriend's sitting
- 5:34next to me and I was like, well, that's really disappointing.
- 5:37That place was. Really cool.
- 5:39He just laughed at me. I'm like, no, like I would live
- 5:41there in this, I guess a volcano.
- 5:44I don't know. It looked really cool.
- 5:45Stone Precipice. It was cool.
- 5:48When like one side was the downslope into a forest and it
- 5:52seemed like a walled city. I thought it was kind of like
- 5:56Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings.
- 5:58Like I thought it was cool. First of all, it looked like as
- 6:02they were flying in. I guess it's like the the shot
- 6:05leading up to the giant volcanic looking cone Stonewall thing.
- 6:11It looked like Takodana Takodana however you pronounce it.
- 6:16But like way nicer. I don't know.
- 6:19I got green vibes. I got green vibes and less
- 6:22humid. It seemed they.
- 6:25They said the name of it, right? Or I didn't pay attention.
- 6:28I need to get my notes because I don't have my notes.
- 6:30Well, because the I was going to say, is it possible it is that
- 6:33because this takes place what, like 1000 years before the
- 6:36original trilogy, something like that.
- 6:38Yeah. This is the Old Republic, no,
- 6:41the High Republic. High Republic, that's.
- 6:43The idea? Brendock is where they come
- 6:46from, the twins, the witches, where it all kind of goes down.
- 6:52I would live there, yes. It looks awesome.
- 6:56So our our lead characters played by 1 lead character is
- 7:00OSHA and Mae. Those those are the the twins.
- 7:04And I have to say, do you have a favorite character yet?
- 7:10The mother. Oh, I do you want to skip ahead?
- 7:14Because she was fucking beautiful.
- 7:16She was so amazing. She was a good mom.
- 7:19She tried. I mean, we'll get to it.
- 7:22I'm, I'm, I'm getting so far ahead.
- 7:24But yeah, she's on the list for sure, for sure.
- 7:28I I I really like the Padawan. I'm sorry, I don't know
- 7:31anybody's names really, except May and OSHA and Master Soul.
- 7:37Master Li Zheng Jai, Li Zheng Jai.
- 7:41He's fantastic. He apparently he faced his
- 7:43performance off Qui God as he. Should that's?
- 7:46Yeah, it really makes sense, honestly.
- 7:49He's got that blend of being a Jedi Master, but also being like
- 7:52kind of compassionate. When he hugs OSHA on the ship
- 7:56again to like, skip way ahead. I was like that Johnny's having
- 8:00like dad feelings right there and you can see it.
- 8:04It was really beautiful. But also almost like seeing
- 8:07attachment form that even surprised him I think.
- 8:11Yeah, I think, yeah, that was a lot of attachment.
- 8:16I love Master Soul and I love Li Zhengjai as an actor from
- 8:22motherfucking Squid Games. No actor has ever made me cry
- 8:28without knowing what the fuck he was saying.
- 8:31Like, his performance in that is noteworthy, and I feel like he's
- 8:35going to bring it in this too. He's going to bring the tears at
- 8:37some point. I can't go without crying at
- 8:41least once in some Star Wars media for for something, you
- 8:45know what I mean? Yeah.
- 8:46It's true. It's it's really true.
- 8:49Damn. Like, oh, and I think the
- 8:52Padawan is her name. Jackie.
- 8:54Yeah, Jackie. Yeah, Jackie.
- 8:57I really enjoy her dry performance.
- 9:00Yes, put your shirt on. We finally got someone
- 9:03shirtless, you know, in Star Wars.
- 9:06And it's like not I did that. That was so on purpose.
- 9:10It's just like, it was not. It was unexpected.
- 9:12I think the first and last person we got shirtless in Star
- 9:15Wars was Anakin and Revenge of the Sith.
- 9:17And God bless every moment for that scene.
- 9:19But like. Well, except Diego Luna was.
- 9:22Oh, I'm so sorry. Died for a few minutes.
- 9:25Oh my God, the biceps. I forgot.
- 9:26I forgot about the biceps. So we've got 3 shirtless
- 9:29moments, none of which were I would.
- 9:31Take every I well we did. They did give us shirtless Obi
- 9:35Wan, but he was like burned to a crisp and really not feeling
- 9:41well in a back to. Tail.
- 9:42That doesn't count. Luke was also shirtless.
- 9:45But no, that's not counting. That's not count being counted.
- 9:49Wasted opportunities, Mark Hamill was fit as fuck.
- 9:53But anywho, back to to this guy who was steaming his Jedi ropes
- 9:58to make them look perfect. Who wouldn't steam their Jedi
- 10:01robes? Honestly, I just love.
- 10:04These little things. That Anakin, He picks them up
- 10:10off the floor and puts them on. Like, yeah, this will do.
- 10:12He gives it a sniff. Like that'll do.
- 10:14I feel like Obi Wan would steam his robes.
- 10:16Don't you? He would.
- 10:17He absolutely would, yes. And in A twist, I believe that
- 10:23Mace Windu also steamed his robes for totally different
- 10:27reasons. Because he's fucking as stiff as
- 10:30a starched collar. You just sit really straight up
- 10:34and down. Yeah.
- 10:36That was great. I thought that was interesting
- 10:37because some people were like, is that vanity?
- 10:41And I saw some people, I think even the actor was saying he
- 10:45just really cares about how he portrays the Jedi.
- 10:48It's kind of like a uniform, and you're representing an entity,
- 10:52so you want to represent it the best way possible.
- 10:55Yeah. I mean, you're one of a whole.
- 10:57You're representing a whole. I get that.
- 10:59It's like uniform. It really, and in these costumes
- 11:02of High Republic, it really does look more like a uniform.
- 11:05They're all kind of dressed the same all the time, which which I
- 11:10think is kind of interesting. So there's I want, I guess this
- 11:14is jumping ahead a little bit, but the third episode when the
- 11:17Jedi come to the witches coven and they're like basically just
- 11:22going to take children that aren't theirs because they don't
- 11:25approve of any other force wielder teaching the force.
- 11:29And it's kind of brutal. And I kind of wonder if they're
- 11:33the ones who killed the witches and not May.
- 11:36We may find that out later, 'cause even my boyfriend was
- 11:40like, how did they die? They're just dead.
- 11:42And I was like, yeah, they don't look like they died in a fire.
- 11:46Hold on, you might be right, because Master Torben didn't
- 11:52speak for years after we what we did, what we did.
- 11:56Quote UN quote. Yeah.
- 11:58And I still was like, So what they do?
- 12:00They didn't save the one girl, but now you're this is a much
- 12:05larger problem. I would be surprised if it
- 12:10doesn't turn out that the Jedi are the ones who killed.
- 12:13That's why May is so fucking pissed.
- 12:16Yeah, and that's why everyone is just like, racked with guilt and
- 12:20very obviously not surprised when May shows up all pissed
- 12:24ready. Yeah, very true.
- 12:24Yeah, 100%. Good catch.
- 12:29The thing that struck me as that feels very UN Jedi like however.
- 12:34Very UN Jedi. It's kind of like how history
- 12:37really works though, because there's so many institutions.
- 12:42I'm talking like mythological and like ancient ones and even
- 12:46like the Middle Ages is a great example.
- 12:48Brutality and power were something that people really
- 12:53desired in their leaders because it kept them safe.
- 12:57And even like, if you want to talk religion, like the way
- 13:01people read the Old Testament, God was a very vengeful, angry
- 13:08God. And now the New Testament makes
- 13:10him more peaceful and loving. And as society has changed, our
- 13:14interpretation has changed to match us.
- 13:17So I think it'd be kind of cool if it turns out the giant were
- 13:22actually pretty fucking brutal during the High Republic.
- 13:25And over time they softened. And we even kind of talked about
- 13:29this in the Jedi trials. Because.
- 13:32Some of those trials were fucked up.
- 13:35If you haven't listened to our episode about that, go back and
- 13:37listen. I think some.
- 13:39Messed up shit in there during this.
- 13:42Now granted I haven't read any of the High Republic books, I'm
- 13:45not that interested and I'm sorry for that but like I'm
- 13:49digesting what we have gotten in the episodes and and nothing.
- 13:52Else what we can with our time and our.
- 13:55True. Energy.
- 13:57It's really true. Yeah.
- 13:59So that's these are all really great points.
- 14:02I'm just excited to see where they go.
- 14:04I'm a little nervous to see where they go because our whole
- 14:09lives we think of Jedi as this. Well.
- 14:12Kind of pinnacle, you know? Can I talk for a minute about
- 14:15that, about that? Can I want I, I need you to help
- 14:19me. Well, I'm not going to go off.
- 14:21I'm going to present it as a question because my
- 14:26interpretation of what I'm seeing is exactly as you said,
- 14:30They are harsh. They are straight.
- 14:33I mean, compared to what we've gotten.
- 14:35So I've grown up, Remember, I watched the original trilogy
- 14:38first cassette or VHS tape, whatever the hell, and grew up
- 14:43admiring the Jedi. You want to be a Jedi, That's
- 14:47who you want to be. And then the more we learn about
- 14:50the Jedi, the stories, the comics, the more movies, the
- 14:53more TV shows that gleam, that glisten, that they have starts
- 14:58to dull. And this show really dulls it
- 15:02for me in the in the way that I've like.
- 15:04If I was a part of this, I would think it's a cult.
- 15:07Yes. OK.
- 15:12Which we've said before in the past.
- 15:14Yes, but they're they're the things they stand for are like
- 15:19kindness and peace, and I get that from from master soul.
- 15:23I get that's the Jedi I want to follow someone like Qui Gon,
- 15:26someone like Luke, someone like Obi Wan, someone with kindness
- 15:30is someone who I can I can perseveres, always stands for
- 15:36the good. That that maybe doesn't
- 15:37necessarily follow the code like Qui Gon, but I would follow Qui
- 15:40Gon forward, you know, because I would trust him.
- 15:44I don't know that I trust a lot of these stone faced.
- 15:49They're just not relatable in any way.
- 15:52And I think they're cold. They're really cold.
- 15:55That's why I called them stones. I don't know what else to call
- 15:58them. Yeah.
- 16:00And I don't like that feeling. I don't want the Jedi.
- 16:03I I know what I want and what I don't want, and I understand
- 16:07what is and what isn't. The Jedi are not the pinnacle of
- 16:11good. They had a lot wrong with them.
- 16:14We have talked about this, it is noted.
- 16:18It is documented not by us, but by a lot more people.
- 16:22But what I want is for some sort of redemption so that I can keep
- 16:27thinking like, OK, it's the majority of Jedi are good.
- 16:31Because right? I just my first example was Luke
- 16:36and Obi Wan, but his tails, Obi Wan's tails more so you you hear
- 16:41about the mystery of the Jedi and then Luke becomes one.
- 16:43It's like, Oh my God, I want to be like Luke.
- 16:45Yeah, I don't know. It's you grow up, I guess, but
- 16:52it's this one's real hard because a lot of these Jedi are
- 16:55a little bit stiff. Yeah, it's like a whole Jedi
- 16:59Order of Mace Windus. Yeah, maybe that's what my
- 17:03problem is. I mean, I had, I had the exact
- 17:07same feeling. OK, Oh good, I mean not.
- 17:09Good. I felt really disappointed
- 17:12honestly. At first it was like, well first
- 17:15of all they killed off Carrie ad Moss immediately, which I was
- 17:17really bummed out because she was the reason I wanted to watch
- 17:20the show. And then I liked Master Soul but
- 17:23whoever the head I can't pronounce her name.
- 17:28Vernestra. Roe the one who?
- 17:31Seems to be in charge of the Jedi.
- 17:33The bald bear, She also a barris.
- 17:37Is that her species? I.
- 17:39I wondered if it was the same as Barris and Luminar, but I'm I
- 17:42didn't look it up, so I'm not sure.
- 17:44But she was very cold and calculating and that immediately
- 17:51kind of put me off. And then they did the flashback
- 17:54and I didn't like any of those Jedi except Master Soul.
- 17:58And even then Master Soul, I was like, why are you trying to take
- 18:00these children away? Why do you think that's OK?
- 18:03To do the whole thing with the children could not be.
- 18:06First of all, if we go off of what the Jedi Council said about
- 18:13Anakin and how old he was, and clearly there was a problem with
- 18:18how old these kids were. They were willing to ignore it
- 18:23though. Like where is the line?
- 18:25Maybe the rule didn't exist yet. Maybe they had.
- 18:28Maybe the reason they don't want Anakin is because of this
- 18:31allegorical tale of these children.
- 18:34I wondered that as well. Did it start with these?
- 18:37Do you just, do you just come and yank the kids away?
- 18:42We've seen it in the Clone Wars that they do.
- 18:45They do. I thought the parents had
- 18:48choices though. I did too.
- 18:50Always implied that the parents consented, not that the Jedi
- 18:54just came and took children. There's a weird Gray area here
- 18:59that I need answered because that that's going to decide a
- 19:01lot for me. Because you just can't.
- 19:03I I mean the psychological issues with that.
- 19:06When the fact that they were like policing another culture
- 19:10because and I'm sure this comes from the Sith Wars, right?
- 19:14If that's Canon, which I think it's Canon.
- 19:17I think so. It was so awful that then they
- 19:20wanted to control who used the Force from then on to avoid evil
- 19:24use of the Force. But in Clone Wars, there's other
- 19:30Force users and they talk about it.
- 19:33Even in Rogue One there are there's the Temple of the Wills
- 19:38and not that the guardians had the force, but the temple was a
- 19:42for like a force sensitive culture.
- 19:46So is the idea that maybe what we know as the Jedi learned from
- 19:52some really terrible mistakes that they made in Acolyte time
- 19:55period? Or is someone just messing up
- 19:59the writing really bad? Well, again, we're gonna throw
- 20:04this out there. We had We don't know everything
- 20:06yet. Right.
- 20:08Well, we better get answers. We better because.
- 20:12Yeah, like please tie it together.
- 20:16Don't leave another loose fucking thread that makes no
- 20:19goddamn sense. Thank you, because we didn't get
- 20:24everything answered in Ahsoka either, and we needed some
- 20:28answers. So yeah, that's why we say this.
- 20:31And we keeled off some characters that we thought were
- 20:33going to give us some answers. Yeah, yes.
- 20:37Yeah, I don't know that the whole episode 3, like really, I
- 20:41don't know. It really made me uncomfortable
- 20:43in a lot of ways. And I wonder if if it's the
- 20:48whole Obi Wan from a certain point of view.
- 20:51Could be. Well, I the apparently I didn't
- 20:54quite see it this way, but I read that the episode three was
- 20:58supposed to be predominantly from Osha's point of view, in
- 21:02which case it could be bias. You don't get the whole story if
- 21:06it's, but I didn't take it as from Osha's point of view, some
- 21:09of the scenes were. It felt more like the mother's
- 21:12point of view. Yes, in which case I sympathized
- 21:16with her right away on multiple fronts.
- 21:20Multiple. Fronts.
- 21:21Here is a group of people who want to live in peace away from
- 21:26the the fuck shit that's going on.
- 21:28OK, we've seen this 1000 times in Star Wars.
- 21:31Usually they're allowed to go and do so as long as you don't
- 21:37fuck around with the Empire, which doesn't exist at this
- 21:40point. But like, as long as you're not
- 21:41cavorting with the old the the the bad side live peacefully or
- 21:46you don't owe the Trade Federation money, in which case
- 21:49we saw them. The fuck?
- 21:50You're right. Oh my God, why?
- 21:52Like they're still there. They're there.
- 21:55They're always there. We're.
- 21:56Going to make sure to bring the most boring part of Star Wars
- 21:59we'll. Never forget, money is behind a
- 22:03lot of this, just like in real life anyway.
- 22:09So it didn't appear to me that they were doing anyone harm.
- 22:14Were they playing with the force?
- 22:15A little bit in dark ways maybe, but it was amongst themselves
- 22:19and they made their point clear. The mother made the point clear.
- 22:23Obviously they're not having children.
- 22:25We'll get to that. And they're doing their own
- 22:27business. They're being witches.
- 22:29They, they're, they call it the thread.
- 22:31They have their ceremonies. I see nothing wrong with this.
- 22:36And the mother, when, when confronted with a different
- 22:40choice, OSHA wanted a different choice.
- 22:42She thought about it. She consulted her, her friends
- 22:45and her family there. And she still allowed OSHA to
- 22:48make her own decision despite what she wanted for that child.
- 22:52And that's what a good parent does.
- 22:54And I thought, Oh my God, she is a beauty.
- 22:57First of all, beautiful, Jody Turner Smith, beautiful.
- 23:02She executed that that roll beautifully beautiful from head
- 23:07to toe. The costumes were cool, the the
- 23:09face painting, the hair, the jewels, the.
- 23:11Just her her like presents were very like head witch mother.
- 23:17Loved it. Yeah, loved it.
- 23:20Hated how the Jedi just walked right in and interrupted their
- 23:23own fucking ceremony. I'd have told them to wait
- 23:25outside. I know, why did they let them
- 23:28in? Like, whatever.
- 23:30And they were creeping around in the forest watching these kids
- 23:33for a while. Like, that's creepy.
- 23:35See, that's why I wonder if that is a biased episode on purpose
- 23:40because that would be crazy intelligent if that is what
- 23:44they're doing. Because you know how you
- 23:47remember something a certain way and then you reinforce it in
- 23:50your mind with details that may or may not be true to just like
- 23:54validate the anger you have. Yes.
- 23:57So either it's May having a memory because it does not feel
- 24:03pro Jedi. So that's why I don't feel like
- 24:04it's Osha's perspective at all. I mean, May threatened to kill
- 24:08her for wanting to leave, so that to me it all seemed like
- 24:13righteousness on the side of the witches.
- 24:17But yeah, I don't. Did they mention what the
- 24:18coven's name is? I don't really remember.
- 24:20I. Didn't catch it.
- 24:21I didn't catch it if so. I just and like the fact that
- 24:24the Jedi take a blood sample without consent.
- 24:27That too. That was fucking strange.
- 24:30I hate it, I hate everything about it.
- 24:32It's manipulative and relying on a child not knowing that you
- 24:36have the right to say no to something like that.
- 24:39Like it really creeped me out actually.
- 24:41Well, they're taking advantage of a child who doesn't know
- 24:45that's trusting an adult. Like, oh, what are you doing?
- 24:48Just taking a blood sample? What for?
- 24:50Just because, OK, you know, like no problem.
- 24:54And I loved how the mother kept saying you're only what was,
- 24:59were they like 8 years old? And she's like, as you grow,
- 25:02what you want is going to change. 1000%.
- 25:07It's so true. And so to allow this child to
- 25:11make this choice, I thought was the ultimate sign of love from
- 25:15her mother because the mother knows better.
- 25:18You want this now. It may change as you grow and
- 25:21that is what happened. But, you know, she was still
- 25:24willing to let her make that decision for herself.
- 25:28I just, everything about the episode I thought was very good.
- 25:31It was well written, it was well acted, and it just set my teeth
- 25:35on edge because I'm curious to see if they're going to explain
- 25:38further to settle my nerves. But I I have a bad feeling about
- 25:43this. Which we got, we got the line.
- 25:46We we got the line. It was nice.
- 25:48That was cute. Got to have that in Star Wars, I
- 25:50guess. All right, so let's just talk
- 25:54about how these two kids were born.
- 25:57Yeah, let's get it. Let's get into the part that
- 25:59makes everybody angry. It doesn't make me angry,
- 26:03surprisingly. I'm not angry about it either
- 26:06and I'm just going to sit back and let them finish their story
- 26:10and then I'll make up my mind. I wanted to double check and
- 26:15make sure that I had heard it correctly.
- 26:18So they were created by the mother, carried by the death of
- 26:22Marian. That was very angry, very stern
- 26:25and very angry. She she taught those girls
- 26:30differently than the mother did, which, yeah, I can't imagine how
- 26:35those fights went down between those two trying to parent who
- 26:38has the right of way, the one who created the children or the
- 26:41one who carried the children like.
- 26:43Well, and she even said that she showed deference to the mother
- 26:45because she is the leader, so she would let her make the
- 26:49decisions about the children. But she had her own opinion, and
- 26:53she did. And rightfully so, you should
- 26:55voice them now. Here's why I'm not mad yet.
- 27:03There's a hint that this undermines Anakin's story, which
- 27:06I don't think it does. I think it's loopholy enough in
- 27:12that the mother said that they were created, doesn't say by the
- 27:16OR there was no father. So they could have been created
- 27:20by some potion, black magic, whatever you want to call it.
- 27:25She could have literally created them through whatever her magic
- 27:31is. And maybe you can't do that to
- 27:33yourself, so you have to do it to another.
- 27:35And that's how the bodies created if you're doing it
- 27:38through some weird magic type thing.
- 27:41But we know Anakin was conceived of the Force, you know, and I
- 27:46went back and reread what George Lucas said.
- 27:48And actually, George Lucas says, don't even worry about how
- 27:51Anakin was, was birthed, Worry about the choices he made.
- 27:55His, his story of how he came to be doesn't matter.
- 27:59And so I'm going with George Lucas, who I trust here.
- 28:03I'm not going to worry about how these girls were, were created.
- 28:06I don't think they're chosen ones.
- 28:08They can't be. That's Anakin's role and Luke's
- 28:12role. OK, That will never change.
- 28:15I don't give a fuck, OK? I don't think these two have a
- 28:20fucking prophecy. They don't because it's not the
- 28:24prophecy. So I'm not worried.
- 28:25And. There's more than one prophecy
- 28:27where the Star Wars that we know has only dealt with one.
- 28:32Yeah, So I'm not worried. I'm not angry.
- 28:36I'm going to let the story play out.
- 28:39But I think, I don't think they were conceived of the force.
- 28:43I don't. I think they were conceived by a
- 28:45strange, powerful magic that the mother had she decided to try.
- 28:49For all we know, they're not even real.
- 28:52True, we don't have any idea what these two children are
- 28:57going to be or turn out to be. OSHA can't even use the force
- 29:01and she was allegedly trained as a Jedi or she's cut herself off
- 29:04from the force completely you know and now has to practice
- 29:08like Obi Wan did in the series the Kenobi series like where you
- 29:11shut yourself off or? Pull a little pen across the
- 29:14desk. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:15Like she couldn't get her little pip Droid to come to her.
- 29:18And I'm like, that's very inconvenient.
- 29:21So yeah, I don't. Know if they're vergences right
- 29:26where one is lighted and one is dark?
- 29:28Why would that piss people off? Because we had mortise, which
- 29:32was the same thing. Yeah.
- 29:34Like there are isolated incidents of this already.
- 29:38And so I don't like, I, I agree it, it borderlines undermining
- 29:42Anakin's story. And I'm going to wait to see how
- 29:45it unfolds before I get real mad about it or anything.
- 29:49But I'm, I'm not mad now because we've talked a lot about a lot
- 29:53of different like the wills, the weird fucking shit.
- 29:56And there's already examples of balance, light and dark and
- 30:01characters that are twins. And so I don't think this is
- 30:05that on Star Wars Z, to be honest.
- 30:07It's so Star Wars Z that it's almost predictable.
- 30:10So we'll see. What it's going to do I I'm more
- 30:15you want to talk about undermining Anakin's story we
- 30:18have an example of that in Palpatine has returned that
- 30:23completely undermined Anakin's redemption and it was allowed so
- 30:28yeah it. Actually undermined.
- 30:30Like that actually. Yeah, that actually happened.
- 30:35The fuck? It that really pissed me off
- 30:38because it was Anakin and Luke's story both got fucked over by
- 30:42that whole plot line. Because of laziness.
- 30:45And even Darth Maul coming back undermined Obi Wan's story.
- 30:50And honestly, so did the Rise of Skywalker also undermine Obi
- 30:54Wan's sacrifice? So like the whole.
- 30:55Thing is fucked. Yeah.
- 30:58So, so we have other things to be worried about, and we're
- 31:00still not that worried because it's fucking Star Wars.
- 31:03At the end of the day, we're supposed to be enjoying this.
- 31:05Well, and ultimately what it comes down to is what I, I've
- 31:09had to do is just pick and choose the pieces that I love
- 31:11and, and that's my version, you know, and that's OK.
- 31:16I really think that that's OK. This fandom is getting so large
- 31:20that it's impossible to consume all the material and you're not
- 31:27going to like every single piece of it.
- 31:29So I. I will say, and I hate to say
- 31:32this but it is getting so watered down at this point.
- 31:35Yeah. These stories don't mean as much
- 31:38to me anymore, and that's sad. Yeah, I feel the same way.
- 31:42It's just getting watered down. It's great to see just new
- 31:46material come out and stuff, but it just sometimes it I just
- 31:49don't connect with it. Yeah, it's too much.
- 31:53They're flooding the market so often with new show every
- 31:58fucking six months that I've got to a point where I don't care
- 32:02sometimes. I never finished Bad Batch.
- 32:06Don't come for me, people. I haven't finished it.
- 32:09I didn't even finish season one. Oops.
- 32:11It took me years to watch Rebels, like to get through
- 32:15Rebels, you know, and, and that was back when there wasn't even
- 32:19that much Star Wars going on. So I I just, yeah, I feel the
- 32:22same. I feel like Star Wars is
- 32:24becoming Marvel. And I stopped caring about
- 32:26Marvel a long time ago. Like basically Iron Man Two came
- 32:30out. Well then, now that you mention
- 32:32it, now that you mention Marvel, we don't like that we have a
- 32:37female Bucky the girl, May I said, excuse me, there's only
- 32:43one knife handler with a fucking face mask that I follow in this
- 32:47lifetime, and his name is James Buchanan Barnes.
- 32:50On he is a rip off of a a GI Joe character anyway.
- 32:54So like again, we're just we're feeding our archetypes right?
- 32:59Like the it's just. There's only so many original
- 33:02ideas out there. Right.
- 33:03Like we can't find anything original anymore, can we it?
- 33:07Just can I? Can I tell you another thing
- 33:09that I'm getting just a smidge tired of?
- 33:12Please. The lack of fighting.
- 33:15It's the standstill. Move your shoulder.
- 33:18Move your shoulder. Act in control.
- 33:20You're being predictable, kind of fighting.
- 33:23Yeah, I'm. I'm kind of over it.
- 33:24I feel like they're not wanting to train these people how to
- 33:28handle a lightsaber. Like, what's your name?
- 33:33Oh, God. Oh, I'm terrible with names.
- 33:35The lead actress, Amandla. Amandla.
- 33:38Yeah. She is doing all of the work and
- 33:42doing it fabulously. All the kudos.
- 33:47Amandla Stenberg, that's it. It comes to me, but it comes
- 33:50later. She's doing all the work and
- 33:53these, these Jedi are like standing there with their hands
- 33:55behind their back. I'm like, Nah, that's not, It's
- 33:58cool for like 2 seconds, but it just feels like they're, they
- 34:01don't have time to train them. So they come across as like
- 34:04almighty and and it's predictable.
- 34:06I'm predicting what you're doing.
- 34:08Watch me not sweat one drop of sweat over this.
- 34:12And it's just like, man, some of Star Wars original fights are
- 34:16what made it cool, even though they were lamer than what they
- 34:18are now because they had sticks, you know, like they had little
- 34:21props. Honestly though, like they like
- 34:24fucking Empire Strikes Back was really good and that was just a
- 34:28a tin pole. Second too, yeah, like sticks,
- 34:33whatever they're. Called Mark Hamill had to study
- 34:35what was it it was like was it Bashuto?
- 34:38I can't remember. He had to study swordplay with
- 34:41both single and single hand and double hand 'cause it's a
- 34:44totally different technique for like months and months.
- 34:47And now I, I know people train, I know.
- 34:51But they like hide A lot of the, they hide A lot of the action in
- 34:56the editing. There's a way to do it.
- 34:58They cut A-frame out of the actual film.
- 35:01Like back when it wasn't digital, they'd slice A-frame
- 35:03out just before contact and like that makes it look like real
- 35:08contact. It makes.
- 35:09Your brain seamlessly put exactly.
- 35:13Because if you leave the the frame in where you see it's not
- 35:16full contact your brain. So exactly your brain fills in,
- 35:21they're like microsecond and it looks more real.
- 35:25And of course you speed things up.
- 35:27Makes it look even cooler. Yeah, exactly.
- 35:30Or you can even use like a a ramp speed down, which is what
- 35:33Steven Spielberg does in Saving Private Ryan.
- 35:35He films at a slower frame rate. And yes, it's it, it adds a
- 35:41different sense of reality to it all.
- 35:44And so they're kind of using that more in this.
- 35:48And I say they're doing it better then like Mandalorian
- 35:52does a fucking terrible job at it.
- 35:54It's so bad. And it's because they have,
- 35:58because they're using the volume, they have to know how
- 36:01they're going to edit before they film.
- 36:03They've said this in articles. I've read it over and over and I
- 36:06could tell you it fucks everything up.
- 36:09It looks like a high school kid edited it together.
- 36:13OK, I'm done. Sorry, sorry.
- 36:17I'm mad. No, it's fine.
- 36:21It's fascinating to hear you explain all of this.
- 36:24I'll shut up now, but I I like, yes, my, my film school's child
- 36:29inside me gets really angry with some of the Star Wars stuff
- 36:32because all the original movies are like an example of how you
- 36:37make a brilliant film. Oh, I agree.
- 36:40I agree. And each one is differently
- 36:43brilliant. Yeah, 'cause when you don't have
- 36:46a million tools at your disposal, you're forced to do it
- 36:50in a way, OK? That takes time, effort,
- 36:53creativity, etcetera. Exactly, and now they're just
- 36:58cranking them out like a fucking Marvel movie cinematic event and
- 37:03it's soulless sometimes. Sorry, I am mad about a lot of
- 37:09things. It's.
- 37:10OK, you know what? I'm not mad at a gold fucking
- 37:15lightsaber. Oh yeah, that was that was cool.
- 37:18My favorite color lightsaber since the dawn of time that was.
- 37:23Does somebody? Have a purple lightsaber.
- 37:25Did I see that right? I thought it was on the I
- 37:27thought it was on the, the poster, the the promos.
- 37:30Because I feel like that's sacrilegious, 'cause that was a
- 37:34promise to Samuel L Jackson that only he would have a purple
- 37:37lightsaber, but the gold was bad is.
- 37:39That real did did that was that said.
- 37:42Oh yeah, that's the reason he wanted a purple lightsaber.
- 37:45Because no one else would ever have one.
- 37:48Well, I'm clicking on you're gonna have to hear from
- 37:53motherfucking Samuel motherfucking Jackson.
- 37:57I'm looking at the Acolyte promo poster and there is somebody
- 38:00with, oh, guess who has it? The bald woman.
- 38:05She has the purple lightsaber. Or it's pink.
- 38:09It could be pink. It could be pink, but it looks
- 38:12purple. It looks purple.
- 38:16Well, you're going to have to bring that up with Sam Jackson.
- 38:18I'm not going to bring it up with him.
- 38:19I really love, appreciate and honor Samuel L Jackson's
- 38:23contributions as a human and as an actor.
- 38:26I just don't like Mace Windu as a as a person.
- 38:29OK, No, I don't want to be like. It's not the actor, it's.
- 38:33Correct. Correct.
- 38:35It's it's, yeah. Totally.
- 38:39I think if Samuel L Jackson had control over his own character,
- 38:43he would be extremely likable. Oh my God, yeah.
- 38:48Because I so good. I love his character in Marvel
- 38:51and I kind of think that like like makes Windu would be like
- 38:56his character in Marvel, which is he's like the lead of of you
- 39:00know what it is Avengers and stuff.
- 39:02He what is his name in Avengers now?
- 39:05I can't remember. Nick Fury Nicholas J Fury.
- 39:10But he go, he goes by Nick, never Nicholas.
- 39:13Nick Fury is Mace window post falling out the window, yeah.
- 39:17Oh my God, yeah. With the thing over his eye and
- 39:21everything, Yeah. Exactly like he gets to do a
- 39:24fight with Windu, Windu with with himself with with
- 39:30Palbatine, gets electrocuted, loses an arm, falls out a
- 39:33window, comes back as Nick Fury and Oh my new Mace window.
- 39:36This is the crossover we need between fandoms.
- 39:42Holy shit I approve. Oh.
- 39:44Shit. Can we address one other thing
- 39:47that's kind of controversial? 1000%.
- 39:50The people are really pissed that this is like what, all
- 39:54women? With.
- 39:56No men. I'm not even fucking addressing
- 39:59it. I mean you can address it but.
- 40:01These people need to get the fuck over it.
- 40:03OK, honestly, I, I was reading some comments in in a thread and
- 40:09it was like, Star Wars is so immoral I can't even show my
- 40:12kids anymore. And I first of all, Star Wars
- 40:17did not invent single gendered worlds.
- 40:22And I don't mean that in like modern gender binary language.
- 40:27I mean it in that like there is a type of fiction called single
- 40:32gender world and it was invented by the Greeks or possibly even
- 40:40earlier than that. Have you heard of the Amazons?
- 40:43And I'm not talking about Wonder Woman Amazons.
- 40:46The Amazons were single gendered community that has existed for a
- 40:51very long time. It was a mythology and now
- 40:53there's actual evidence that they were real women warriors
- 40:57who existed Greek or possibly pre Greek time period.
- 41:02There's also a very famous novel called Her Land which was
- 41:07written in like 1915. That's also a community of
- 41:12women. It was written by Charlotte
- 41:14Perkins Gilman and like that's a very famous novel about a
- 41:19community of women. There's also been books written
- 41:21by men about all female communities.
- 41:24Like this is not new and it was not invented by Star Wars.
- 41:28So could we stop getting pissed about a story about a group of
- 41:32women because it already exists? It's Star Wars the night
- 41:35sisters. What the fuck everyone why are
- 41:38we so mad about a coven of witches in Star Wars?
- 41:43What was ventress? What was Elsebeth?
- 41:47I'm tired, Leanne. Oh, listen, listen, I read
- 41:51something that they're pissed because they seem to be
- 41:54lesbians. And I'm like, you need to step
- 41:56into the current century we're in.
- 41:59First of all, I'm wearing a proud Ally T-shirt as we record
- 42:03this. It is Pride month and I'm not
- 42:05honoring anyone's ignorance and hypocrisy when saying that
- 42:11they're not accepting a certain storyline because it's all
- 42:14female. It's all male.
- 42:15It's lesbians, gays. I don't care what label you slap
- 42:18on it, if that's the reason you hate it, get the fuck out of
- 42:22here, Right? Just get out of here.
- 42:25We don't want you. It's petty, it's exhausting,
- 42:30it's simple minded. You're not expanding your mind,
- 42:33your your creativity, your story.
- 42:35And if that's if that's what you want, do it over there.
- 42:41Do it away from us. All a group of women living
- 42:45together does not automatically mean they're all lesbians also.
- 42:49I would like to ask, I would, I would love to ask any fraternity
- 42:55if they minded the sororities. Yeah, good question.
- 42:58They weren't all lesbians, were they?
- 43:00And if they were, who gives a fuck?
- 43:02Right. Like exactly like sister ship
- 43:06and even even brotherhood whether sexual or that or
- 43:10asexual which is also a thing. Do I need to bring up Catholic
- 43:14priests? I mean, what the fuck?
- 43:20Anyway, you can cut that out if you want.
- 43:22I just this. We've got to be better than
- 43:25this. Yeah, OK.
- 43:27This should be a non issue. I'm all fired up about a lot of
- 43:30stuff today. Well, I have a light hearted
- 43:32moment that goes back to the Jedi I told you about my
- 43:35favorite line of all three episodes.
- 43:39Oh my God, I laughed so hard. That was like the best polo I've
- 43:42got in months. That was.
- 43:43So I had to. I had to send Lauren a video of
- 43:48me 1020 minutes after the fact, still laughing at the death of
- 43:53Marion who carried those twins, She said.
- 43:56I did not carry these girls to hand them off to a bunch of
- 44:00wood. Disgruntled.
- 44:02No, there was. What was the actual fucking word
- 44:04in demented? It was demented monks, she said.
- 44:12I did not carry these girls to give them over to a bunch of
- 44:15demented monks. And that is the most truthful,
- 44:19hilarious thing about the Jedi I've ever heard, ever.
- 44:23Ever. I know.
- 44:24I think we've even described it that way.
- 44:27I said to you, if Yoda heard that, what would he say?
- 44:30He'd tap his little gaffer stick and whatever it is and just walk
- 44:34away, thus proving that they're a bunch of unhinged.
- 44:40She said it so convincingly she seen it with a lip curl.
- 44:44I was like, I feel this bitch. Speak your truth, Hon.
- 44:47Like, oh. My God, it was so funny.
- 44:53Hands down my favorite line. Does Your anger about it was so
- 44:56funny. I loved it.
- 44:57It was so good. Not your anger, your joy.
- 45:00My joy over it because I couldn't.
- 45:02It was one of those things like where I heard her say it and
- 45:05then like 2 seconds after I busted out laughing, 'cause I
- 45:10said, did she actually say that? They actually kept that in.
- 45:13Somebody wrote that. That's amazing.
- 45:17I would love to know Obi Wan's reaction if somebody had said
- 45:22that in front of him. He would.
- 45:23He would probably, he would probably smirk.
- 45:28He would. I think he would respect that
- 45:29description. You're entitled.
- 45:32If he could put up with Mother Talzin right in his face,
- 45:37actually go coy and pissed. And Zero, the hut's mother,
- 45:42who's very gracious he. Threw a slimy starfish at them,
- 45:49he was so gracious. He was so polite.
- 45:52Obi Wan, the ultimate Jedi. Whether he's an old disgruntled
- 45:57monk or not or whatever the word was.
- 45:59Unhinged, disgruntled. Well, it's been a ride these
- 46:04first three episodes. Yeah.
- 46:07I would. Say I enjoyed it, yeah, I'm.
- 46:10I'm interested in the story. I want to see where it goes.
- 46:14It's definitely caught my attention more than Ahsoka or
- 46:18Mandalorian did. I think it's got a lot of
- 46:22potential and I will withhold full judgment till the very end,
- 46:26but. Same, and the next three
- 46:28episodes we will cover after the next three episodes are done
- 46:31similar to this. And we'll be back with those
- 46:34thoughts whenever, whenever time passes and we'll see what those
- 46:37three episodes bring us. Who knows?
- 46:39More one liners by disgruntled death.
- 46:42A Mirian people had deranged monks.
- 46:44I don't know. Well, what do you think the next
- 46:49twist will be? I think the next twist is that
- 46:52the mother is not dead or is going to come back somehow from
- 46:56the dead. Well, while I hope that's true
- 47:00because I want more of her, I don't know.
- 47:02I don't, I don't know that I was thinking of any other twist, but
- 47:06someone's gonna die. I mean, obviously the Wookie
- 47:13Jedi who we've never had, we've never had before.
- 47:15It's great. Just just as a little baby we
- 47:18have. One, just a little baby one.
- 47:19Yeah, but I hope he doesn't die. But probably.
- 47:27Well, yeah, I guess he's, he and Master Stole are the only ones
- 47:30left on our list, right? Yeah, I guess the I I guess
- 47:34based on what you said, we're going to learn that the Jedi
- 47:36killed him. Maybe that would be the next
- 47:38twist. But it won't be A twist, you
- 47:41know, I don't know. Maybe the mother will come back.
- 47:43I don't know. I don't know, the mother killed
- 47:45them. Is there like some reason those
- 47:47children were born and that reason got destroyed when OSHA
- 47:51left? So the mother killed the coven?
- 47:52I don't. Know I think the next twist will
- 47:56be we find out who the hell is leading may the dude with the
- 48:00mask that we keep seeing but not seeing you know.
- 48:04Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good.
- 48:06Point. Wonder if it would be anyone we
- 48:07know. The mother.
- 48:11The mother. Has a twin she's.
- 48:13A twist. There, that's the twist.
- 48:18There's two of them. Always.
- 48:21Some people have said it's a a Sith and some people say it's
- 48:24not the Sith at all. So I don't know.
- 48:27It'll be very interesting to see what that's going to be.
- 48:30I don't know. The Tragedy of Darth Pelagius
- 48:33the. I wasn't expecting that.
- 48:52All right, everyone, we actually talked about what we think the
- 48:56next twist might be, but we want to hear from you.
- 48:58What do you think the next twist will be in the next few episodes
- 49:02of The Acolyte? Do you think there will be one?
- 49:04Let us know. Join us back here next week.
- 49:08It's time to return to Obi Wan. I feel like we've been away too
- 49:11long. Too long.
- 49:14We are going to talk about the little details both from live
- 49:18action and Clone Wars animation. Everything.
- 49:21The little details they add that make Obi Wan special.
- 49:25Yes, yes, there's things he does that make him special.
- 49:30Yes, yes. And there might be some.
- 49:31There's deep things and shallow things, and I'm here for both of
- 49:36those. We go into both sides of the
- 49:39same pool, so shallow end and the deep end of the pool.
- 49:45So join us back here next week for that.
