- 0:15So, with everything going on right now
- 0:16in New York with the Knicks being in the
- 0:18NBA finals, I thought it'd be a cool
- 0:20podcast to talk about the top 10 best
- 0:24sports moments in New York history. and
- 0:26I have a good buddy of mine, Nick, who I
- 0:28went to college with. We won't get into
- 0:29all those stories that we had there, but
- 0:31we're both big New York fans. Uh, we
- 0:34definitely don't enjoy the same teams,
- 0:36but I thought it was a good idea. What
- 0:37did you think?
- 0:39>> I I like it. It just makes me realize
- 0:42how sad our franchises really are.
- 0:45>> Yeah, 100%. Tell everybody a little bit
- 0:48about yourself and and what what fans of
- 0:51New York teams you are. All right. So, I
- 0:55not so much into hockey anymore, but I
- 0:57used to be a Devil fan. Um, Devils. I
- 1:00mean, I don't know when I fell out of
- 1:01hockey, but um I would say probably like
- 1:04early 2000s or mid 2000s, I fell out of
- 1:07hockey, but
- 1:09um I'm a Dalton fan, but I do I do
- 1:13support those Giants. I do. If if my
- 1:15teams are always out, my team's always
- 1:16out of it. So, I I do root for the
- 1:18Giants because they're local. Um, I'm a
- 1:21huge Mets fan. Huge Mets fan. Live and
- 1:26die with every pitch. And, uh, Brooklyn
- 1:29Nets, which were the New Jersey Nets,
- 1:31were my, uh, were my team or still my
- 1:33team, I should say.
- 1:34>> So, yeah, we're both from Jersey, so I
- 1:36like we both grew up in the area.
- 1:38Obviously, he roots for a bunch of New
- 1:40Jersey teams. I was a Devils fan growing
- 1:42up as well. Not a huge hockey fan by any
- 1:44means. I think when we got into hockey
- 1:46for the most part, like it was it was
- 1:48college years and the Devils are really
- 1:50good. We'll talk about maybe a little
- 1:52bit about the Devils in today's episode,
- 1:53but uh to me, everybody knows I'm a huge
- 1:56Jets fan. I'm a huge Knicks fan and I am
- 1:58a Mets fan. I grew up a Mets fan as a
- 1:59kid. Obviously, when you're a young kid,
- 2:02baseball is like at the heart of
- 2:03everything. So, growing up watching the
- 2:06early Mets, I'm talking about the 1980s
- 2:08when they were really, really good,
- 2:09really dangerous. I'll put it that way
- 2:11as well. Uh, that was a good time to be
- 2:14a Mets fan. But the way I thought this
- 2:16should work is like each of us are going
- 2:18to give you like an honorable mention to
- 2:19our top 10. Something that didn't make
- 2:21our list, but the something that was
- 2:22really close. So, I'm going to let you
- 2:24start. What is your What is your
- 2:25honorable mention here?
- 2:27>> I got two.
- 2:28>> Okay.
- 2:29>> All right. First one. And I reason I put
- 2:32it honorable mention is because
- 2:36even though the moment
- 2:38was epic,
- 2:41it didn't amount to anything. And that
- 2:43was game five 1999 NLCS,
- 2:48the Robin Ventura Grand Slam single.
- 2:53>> A DRIVE TO RIGHT BACK TO GEORGIA.
- 2:58GONE. A GRAND SLAM.
- 3:04So that's that's my honorable mention as
- 3:05well. That grand slam single was so
- 3:08memorable. It was such an iconic moment
- 3:11and and I love those those Mets teams.
- 3:12Mike Piaza to this day outside of Doc
- 3:14Gooden is my is my favorite Met.
- 3:17>> So that team I remember watching that
- 3:19game. We were in our apartment in Philly
- 3:22watching that game and it was just
- 3:23something to behold. Like it was just
- 3:25unreal. Great game and the way that game
- 3:29ended. I I'll be honest and I'm a huge
- 3:32Mets fan. I had given up on them and I
- 3:35think I went to bed because it was 15
- 3:37innings. I'm like, "This team sucks.
- 3:38They're not winning it." And you guys
- 3:40woke me up
- 3:42>> screaming and yelling because he hit
- 3:44that grand slam single. It was It was
- 3:46incredible.
- 3:47>> Yeah. Unbelievable. Uh that definitely
- 3:49made my honorable mention. It was such a
- 3:51great moment. Um if you're if you're a
- 3:53Mets fan, that team uh you know, cast of
- 3:56characters. Obviously, you had Piaz, you
- 3:58had Alfonso, you had Robin Veter, but
- 4:00Todd Zal, I believe, was on that team
- 4:01still. Like
- 4:02>> Zal was the next year. It was Rob um
- 4:05what's his name with the helmet? John
- 4:06Olarude played
- 4:07>> Olarude.
- 4:08>> It was okay.
- 4:09>> But again, Al Lighter uh some
- 4:13Yes. A great mix of of characters on
- 4:16that team and and such a great iconic
- 4:18moment. So, what's your other honorable
- 4:20mention?
- 4:21the other honorable mention and it I
- 4:24mean like I kind of wanted to put it on
- 4:25the list but
- 4:28I took something else from that year and
- 4:30put it on the list because it's like my
- 4:31all-time favorite but game six October
- 4:3515 1986
- 4:37NLCS the 16 inning Mets Houston playoff
- 4:43game
- 4:45>> 32 bass
- 4:48him
- 4:53was epic. It was crazy. All the the the
- 4:56most crazy game ever and still actually
- 4:59regarded as one of the best playoff
- 5:01games of all time. But that game, had
- 5:05they not won that game, I don't think
- 5:06they would have won the series because
- 5:08they had no shot against Mike Scott. No
- 5:10shot.
- 5:12>> And they also almost lost the series,
- 5:14too. That's the next thing. that that
- 5:15did not make my list. The honorable
- 5:16mention or or anything else. My other
- 5:19honorable mention before we get into the
- 5:20entire list was just one of the greatest
- 5:24moments. I don't say moment, but
- 5:26greatest catches that I have ever seen
- 5:27in my life. And that's Andy Chavez
- 5:29catch.
- 5:30>> Edmonds at first and one out. And Perez
- 5:33deals. Fast ball hit in the air to left
- 5:34field. That's deep. That goes Chavez
- 5:36BACK NEAR THE WALL LEAPING AND HE MADE
- 5:39THE CATCH. HE TOOK A HOME RUN AWAY FROM
- 5:42ROLAND TRYING TO GET BACK TO FIRST.
- 5:44EDMONDS. HE'S DOUBLED OFF AND THE INNING
- 5:46IS OVER.
- 5:47>> I WAS going to put that on there, too.
- 5:49Uh it was the NLCS against the
- 5:51Cardinals.
- 5:52>> Yes.
- 5:53>> And at the time,
- 5:55>> I went nuts because that saved the game.
- 5:58>> It he doubled them up. It was the most
- 6:00ridiculous cat. I mean, it was a snow
- 6:02cone cat. I mean, I didn't even know how
- 6:03he caught it. It was insane.
- 6:05>> But what made it more memorable was one,
- 6:07it's against the Cardinals. And if you
- 6:09grew up a Mets fan, I hate to say it,
- 6:10but the Cardinals always [ __ ] killed
- 6:12us. What's that dude's name? Uh Willie
- 6:15Willie McGee was the other one. Vince
- 6:16Coleman absolutely [ __ ] killed us
- 6:19every year.
- 6:20>> Coleman killed us until he came to it
- 6:21and then he killed us again because he
- 6:22saw
- 6:24>> he was the worst.
- 6:25>> But that was the the announcer too. Uh
- 6:27the dude now, what's his name? Gary
- 6:29Cohen. The announcing on that catch was
- 6:33something I will never forget. And that
- 6:34we could do a whole episode just on
- 6:36announcing because some of the iconic
- 6:38announcing that's been gone on in New
- 6:39York and New Jersey sports is some of
- 6:41the best you'll ever hear. But him
- 6:43making that call on that catch, I'll
- 6:45never forget.
- 6:46>> I uh small side note, I own that piece
- 6:48of the wall from Shay Stadium where he
- 6:51caught the ball. That little section
- 6:52right above the glass. I have it.
- 6:55>> All right, so let's get into the list.
- 6:56I'm going to let you start again since
- 6:58you're the guest. What is your number 10
- 7:00New York sports moment? You're not going
- 7:02to like this number 10 because you
- 7:04probably have it as one of your top
- 7:05ones. But Joe Nameoth guarantees victory
- 7:08over the heavily favored Colts 1969
- 7:12Super Bowl 3. I get up to the podium and
- 7:14a guy in the back of the room yells out,
- 7:16"Hey Nameoth, we're going to kick your,
- 7:18you know what, and just, you know, it
- 7:22was just wait a minute. I've been
- 7:24hearing that all week long. I got news
- 7:26for you, buddy. We're going to win the
- 7:28game. I guarantee you." I think that
- 7:30that moment has to be on any New York
- 7:32sports list. Believe it or not, that's
- 7:34my number eight. So, it didn't it didn't
- 7:36make my top spot only because I wasn't
- 7:38alive, right? I'm you know, I'm b I'm
- 7:40born in 77, so my dad's a big Jets fan.
- 7:43He remembers it, although he was, you
- 7:45know, probably in his early teens.
- 7:47>> I just it's a great moment. For anybody
- 7:50who doesn't know the back the backstory
- 7:52of that moment is that the AFL and the
- 7:55NFL had not merged yet. They decided to
- 7:57kind of two leagues that decided, hey,
- 7:59let's let's do one game at the end of
- 8:00the year. The winner of each league come
- 8:02together and play a what they call the
- 8:04Super Bowl. Now, Super Bowl one and two,
- 8:05I don't want to say they're blowouts,
- 8:07but it wasn't in hand. And everybody
- 8:09thought the Jets were going to get blown
- 8:10out and Joe Name comes out and says,
- 8:12"You know what? I guarantee we're going
- 8:13to win this game." They go on to do it.
- 8:15Defense is tremendous in the game. So,
- 8:16it just kind of shaped the NFL as we
- 8:18know it. They they took the AFL as a
- 8:20real league and then they eventually
- 8:21emerged later on. I mean, and the other
- 8:23thing too with that Super Bowl was I
- 8:25don't think that I mean, I mean, I
- 8:27wasn't around, but from what I
- 8:28understand, it wasn't like, "Oh my god,
- 8:30this game was great." It was just like
- 8:33it was an okay game. I mean, the only
- 8:34thing that that people remember from
- 8:36that game is that he guaranteed victory.
- 8:40>> Agreed. But, but what made it such a big
- 8:42deal is one, Joe was such a polarizing
- 8:44figure during that time.
- 8:45>> Well, it made him a legend, too. It made
- 8:47him I mean, like he didn't he wasn't
- 8:49that great after that fact, too. It's
- 8:51just like that's what's made him a
- 8:52legend.
- 8:54>> But uh that I think honestly a lot of
- 8:56people would probably be shocked that
- 8:58that that's so low on our list. But
- 9:00don't forget again we're both in our
- 9:02late 40s so we weren't alive for this
- 9:04moment. But we are going to acknowledge
- 9:06it. So I'm going to give you my number
- 9:0810 and it's something that I remember
- 9:10and it's sticking with the New York Jets
- 9:12and that's the miracle at the Melands
- 9:14which you probably want to forget. 76 is
- 9:17eligible.
- 9:20Big to it and it is jungle and caught by
- 9:25Jungle Elliot.
- 9:28>> Jumbo Elliot.
- 9:30>> So for anybody who's listening who
- 9:32doesn't know what that is,
- 9:34>> obviously the Jets are playing
- 9:36>> Yep. The Jets are playing the Dolphins
- 9:37on Monday night 30 to7. The Jets are
- 9:40getting killed in the fourth quarter and
- 9:43they make one of the most miraculous
- 9:45comebacks that the NFL has ever seen.
- 9:47Might be the biggest. I I don't know
- 9:48about that. I don't think it is. But the
- 9:51way that game was going, the Jets were
- 9:53awful. Vinnie Testy all of a sudden
- 9:56starts lighting them up, going up and
- 9:58down the freaking field. They come back.
- 9:59Half the stadium had already left, if
- 10:01not more, by the start of the fourth
- 10:03quarter. And people were filing back in
- 10:06once they found out what was going on.
- 10:07So to me, I remember where I was during
- 10:10that moment. I was in my my bedroom at
- 10:12my parents house. My father was on the
- 10:14couch downstairs watching the game,
- 10:15flipping back and forth. He thought it
- 10:17was over. And for some reason, I did not
- 10:19turn off that game. And I couldn't
- 10:21believe it when they came back and won.
- 10:24My dad is screaming downstairs, I'm
- 10:25screaming upstairs. It's just an
- 10:27incredible memory for me growing up.
- 10:30That just speaks volumes to how bad your
- 10:32franchises are when you got to remember
- 10:35one game that meant nothing. But it was
- 10:38a good game. I'll give you that.
- 10:40>> Yeah. I mean, I'm Did that make your
- 10:41list at all or No.
- 10:43>> No. No. No. Not even close. It
- 10:45>> to me it's such a It's such a a moment
- 10:47that I'll never forget. I had to put it
- 10:49on there. So, it came in at my number
- 10:5010. Bo, I'm going to start off now with
- 10:52number nine. So, then we'll flip back to
- 10:55you. My number nine moment was the Jeter
- 10:57flip in the 2001 ALDS.
- 11:00>> That is fair down the right field line.
- 11:03Giani on his way to third and they're
- 11:06going to wave him around. The throw
- 11:08misses A CALL MAN SHOT INTO THE POINT OF
- 11:12the plate. Derek Jeter with ONE OF THE
- 11:15MOST UNBELIEVABLE PLAYS YOU WILL EVER
- 11:18SEE BY A SHORTSTOP.
- 11:20>> Doesn't get hit. He picks it up, throws
- 11:22it to the plate, and nails G nail nails
- 11:25Giani at the plate uh to get him out.
- 11:27That That was such a huge moment. I
- 11:29remember everybody talking about it. And
- 11:30I'm not a Yankees fan. Neither are you.
- 11:31So, but I had to put it on there.
- 11:33Something Derek Jeter had to make a
- 11:34list.
- 11:35>> I'm I'm not going to I'm not going to
- 11:37poo poo Derek Jeter because I think he's
- 11:40awesome. But
- 11:42I I don't know what everyone's so
- 11:43obsessed with that play for. I mean, if
- 11:45the ball goes through, he's still
- 11:46getting the guy at home. I think I don't
- 11:48think it was a big deal.
- 11:50I don't know. Everybody says that, but I
- 11:52rewatched the play before we did this
- 11:54and the the throw was so far up the
- 11:57first baseline. I'm not sure if the
- 11:59catcher could get it, come back and tag
- 12:01him out. I I don't know. But because
- 12:03it's Derek Jeter and because he did it
- 12:05and we we also see him make, you know,
- 12:07falling into the third base, you know,
- 12:09stands catching balls because it's Derek
- 12:11Jeter, the captain, and all that he's
- 12:14done for the franchise. I had to give
- 12:15him something on this list. I just could
- 12:17not. And that to me is his most
- 12:18memorable moment. We could talk about
- 12:19the home run in in 96 where the fan
- 12:22catches the ball in the stands that they
- 12:24called a home run, but this to me was uh
- 12:27stood out to me more. What's your what's
- 12:29your number nine moment?
- 12:30>> So my number nine is has the game is not
- 12:34significant. The season was not
- 12:35significant, but the moment was and it
- 12:39was April 22nd, 1970. Tom Siver strikes
- 12:44out 19 batters
- 12:46in a single game, including the last
- 12:48nine to face him.
- 12:50>> Here's the one, two pitch. Check him
- 12:52out. SA has 19 strikeouts. Tied the
- 12:55major league record. The game is over.
- 12:58Cody's out there congratulating him. The
- 13:01Mets are out there congratulating him.
- 13:03What a day for Tom Siver.
- 13:06>> Ridiculous. Tom Siver alltime best Mets
- 13:09pitcher. All time. You know what?
- 13:10probably the best right-hand pitcher
- 13:12ever in baseball.
- 13:14>> Not saying 19 batters is just insane.
- 13:17>> Yeah. See, I I wasn't obviously wasn't
- 13:19around for that moment, so I don't have
- 13:21a a fondness for it, but I could
- 13:23understand. Tom Siver is definitely the
- 13:25greatest Met of all time. No question.
- 13:28So, I understand how it how it's on the
- 13:30list.
- 13:31>> So, at at that time, he at that time
- 13:32that 19 batters was a record
- 13:36and his nine in a row was a record. And
- 13:38I think somebody tied him recently, but
- 13:40>> All right. So, what's Let's go to number
- 13:42eight. Let's let's let you start off
- 13:44with number eight because we already
- 13:44talked about my number eight, and that's
- 13:46Joe Nameoth guaranteeing Super Bowl
- 13:47victory. So, what's yours?
- 13:48>> So, I'm going to go number eight with
- 13:50one of my favorite players of all time,
- 13:52September 21st, 2001. Mike Piaza and the
- 13:56911 home run.
- 13:58>> Lopez wants it away. And it's deep to
- 14:00LEFT CENTER. ANDREW JONES ON THE RUN.
- 14:03THIS ONE HAS A CHANCE. HOME RUN. MIKE
- 14:06PIAZA. AND THE KNICKS LEAD 3-2.
- 14:10>> The most ridiculous home. I mean, like
- 14:12the city was dead. The crowd was dead.
- 14:15He hits this massive home run
- 14:18against the Braves. Our arch nemesis,
- 14:21the Braves. Huge home run. The Mets are
- 14:24like, they're kind of in a pennant race.
- 14:26They're trying to claw their way back.
- 14:28That home run woke up the city. That was
- 14:31a massive I mean, when I say massive,
- 14:33this thing was a shot. Like, I'd never
- 14:34seen a home run like that ever. It was
- 14:36insane.
- 14:37So, believe it or not, that's my number
- 14:39two moment in New York sports history.
- 14:42And I'm going to tell you why. It's
- 14:44because of 9/11. It was the first
- 14:46sporting event after the 9/11 attacks.
- 14:49And growing up a Mets fan, like to be in
- 14:52that spotlight, the president was there.
- 14:54He threw out the first pitch. Everybody
- 14:56was kind of on pins and needles if you
- 14:58remember. How would this go? How would
- 15:00people react after what had happened?
- 15:03And for the Mets to be down, like you
- 15:05said before, playing their arch rivals
- 15:06in the Braves, who we couldn't stand.
- 15:09Bobby Valentine hated Bobby Cox and vice
- 15:12versa. They hated each other. To see
- 15:14them come out, Mets down. When Mike
- 15:17Piaza came to bat, it was like everybody
- 15:19in the stadium was on their feet.
- 15:21Everybody was anxious. And there was no
- 15:23one else that you wanted in that spot.
- 15:25Uh because it meant so much that moment.
- 15:28And I'm getting like tearyeyed just
- 15:31thinking about it. the emotion that came
- 15:32back when he hit that home run. To me,
- 15:34that's number two, and it's it's such an
- 15:36iconic moment in New York sports
- 15:38history.
- 15:39>> I mean, you said the hatred. There was
- 15:40pure hatred for the Braves and and and
- 15:43the one guy, I don't know if you
- 15:44remember this guy, John Rocker.
- 15:47>> The guy was a lunatic, but he he just he
- 15:50had a hatred for the New York, the fans,
- 15:52everything. It was crazy.
- 15:53>> Yeah. So, that's my number two. So, I'm
- 15:55going to go now since I already gave you
- 15:58my number eight and we're on number
- 15:59seven. My number seven is something that
- 16:04I think every Knicks fan growing up, uh,
- 16:07whether you're alive at the time or not,
- 16:09is going to be taught about this moment.
- 16:10And that's Willis Reed walking back on
- 16:12the court in 1970.
- 16:13>> I think we see Willis coming out.
- 16:17>> There he comes right now. 6' 10 from
- 16:19Grembling, the captain of the Knicks,
- 16:21the most valuable player of the NBA.
- 16:27Frasier then slows it down is picked up
- 16:29by Jerry West at the top of the post
- 16:30read
- 16:33>> to give the Knicks their first
- 16:34championship and he didn't play much
- 16:35after after coming back in the game. We
- 16:37played a little bit after that, but the
- 16:39Knicks went on to blow out the Lakers in
- 16:41that series, but it was such an iconic
- 16:42moment and for the Knicks to get their
- 16:44first title and unfortunately they got
- 16:46one in 73 as well, but it's been 53
- 16:49years after that. But just just you
- 16:51could see the how important just a
- 16:53leader of a team to come back and give
- 16:55anything he has in an important moment
- 16:57means to a sport, but also an entire
- 17:00city. So that was my number four
- 17:03actually because I I I mean you've I
- 17:06mean growing up you've seen that moment
- 17:08a million times. They show it so many
- 17:10times. You hear Marv Albert you know his
- 17:13voice just you know saying Willis Reeds
- 17:15come back onto the court. Um
- 17:18>> I think he scored the first two baskets
- 17:19actually.
- 17:20>> Yeah
- 17:20>> he won the he won the MVP even though
- 17:24probably Clyde should have won the MVP
- 17:25because his number he had like 36 points
- 17:27and like 19 assists. was crazy. But I
- 17:31mean, you forget the team. Who did they
- 17:33beat?
- 17:35>> The Lakers.
- 17:36>> Lakers. And the Lakers were ridiculous.
- 17:38So like I mean, and it's not only that
- 17:42they won, it's like they beat the
- 17:43Lakers. It's crazy. And you're right.
- 17:4653, we're talking about the Rangers.
- 17:48>> Rangers had like a huge drought.
- 17:52>> 54 years.
- 17:53>> Knicks are Knicks are right there. The
- 17:54Knicks are right there right now. 53.
- 17:56They got to win this If they don't win,
- 17:58forget it.
- 17:58>> Uh, that was my seven. What is your
- 18:00number seven?
- 18:01>> So, my seven is an alltime baseball
- 18:05moment.
- 18:071961. We're going back to 1961. Roger
- 18:11Maris hit 61 home runs in a season.
- 18:14>> Here's the wind up. FAST HIT DEEP. THAT
- 18:17COULD BE IT. WAY BACK THERE. OH, SORRY.
- 18:25which nobody had even come close to. I
- 18:28think maybe Mantle hit 56 in 1956,
- 18:33but 61 home runs, which nobody thought
- 18:36anyone would ever beat Babe Ruth. Um,
- 18:39just the amount of pressure the guy had.
- 18:40It was just like one of the all-time
- 18:42moments in New York sports history. So,
- 18:44I had to put that on the list.
- 18:46>> You know, it's funny. I didn't even
- 18:47think of that moment. But, you're right.
- 18:49To this day, that that number 61 still
- 18:52stands. I know we had 70 when during the
- 18:55steroid power
- 18:56>> if that didn't happen
- 18:57>> even and and even and even Judge hit I
- 19:00think 62 right or something
- 19:02>> recently and and the catcher last year
- 19:04um Cal Rally hit 60 so I mean like that
- 19:07number now is means nothing but back
- 19:09then it was it was hu I mean nobody hit
- 19:12that many home runs now everybody hits
- 19:13home runs.
- 19:14>> Yeah.
- 19:14>> So like to have 61 home runs is just
- 19:17insane.
- 19:17>> All right so number six I'm going to let
- 19:18you have number six to start.
- 19:21>> All right. Uh, so number six is a
- 19:23hurtful one from May 27, 1994.
- 19:28Growing up a Devils fan. This is game
- 19:31seven of the Eastern Conference Finals.
- 19:34Double overtime. Stefon Mau wraparound
- 19:38goal on Marty Brod. For the Devils plays
- 19:41it across ice into the far corner. Metau
- 19:43swoops in to intercept. METTO BEHIND THE
- 19:45NET. SWEEPS IT IN FRONT. HE MET ME.
- 19:51DEFEND MENTAL
- 19:52>> and I still remember to this day cuz my
- 19:55brother was a Rangers fan him coming
- 19:57into my room and laughing at me and me
- 19:59beating the crap out of him because I
- 20:00was so pissed off. But that goal and and
- 20:03just the the iconic call from Howie
- 20:05Rose, Matteo, Mateo, Meto, dude, it it
- 20:09was one of the most stinging and the
- 20:10only thing that that cured it was the
- 20:12next year when they won the Stanley Cup
- 20:13finals because that was a crushing
- 20:17defeat. Crushing. And that was the I'll
- 20:19tell you what, that doesn't happen, they
- 20:22don't win the finals. They don't they
- 20:24don't, you know, they don't win the
- 20:25Stanley Cup because that game was huge.
- 20:28That those were two epic teams and the
- 20:31the Rangers came out that day and won
- 20:33that
- 20:34>> to me that series might have been some
- 20:36of the best hockey that that's ever been
- 20:37played.
- 20:38>> I'm telling you to this that's what made
- 20:40me a hockey fan. I'm telling you, I I
- 20:41that that series was phenomenal. It was
- 20:44just back and forth. Everything was just
- 20:46like, you know, like heart pounding.
- 20:48It's just like, it was insane. It was
- 20:50very intense.
- 20:52>> And don't forget, I mean, this could be,
- 20:54you got to look at it from the Rangers
- 20:55because the Rangers are New York and and
- 20:58what what they did in that game for for
- 21:00Mark Messi to come out and guarantee the
- 21:03win was just wild. So again, that
- 21:06guarantee thing is uh is part of New
- 21:08York lore right there. But incredible
- 21:10moment. I was going to put the guarantee
- 21:12on the list, but I figured the goal was
- 21:14more important because I he did he did
- 21:16come out and say we will win game seven,
- 21:19which was big, but you had to actually
- 21:20go out and win game seven, which stiff
- 21:22Amato just, you know, shoved it down
- 21:24their throats.
- 21:24>> So, speaking of number six, my number
- 21:26six is akin to the to the player I was
- 21:29just speaking about, and it's Larry
- 21:31Johnson's four-point play in the 99
- 21:33playoffs.
- 21:33>> 11 and n 10 seconds to go. Ward with a
- 21:36pass tipped, but handled by Johnson.
- 21:38Johnson is three-point territory, but
- 21:40guarded tightly. Johnson cuts left now.
- 21:43Fires a three. It is good. AND HE'S
- 21:45FOULED. It counts. AND HE IS FOULED. I
- 21:49I'M going to set a scene here. In 1999,
- 21:51I'm in my junior I'm sorry, in uh I
- 21:53we're in our our second to last year of
- 21:56college and to see that play, the Knicks
- 21:59down three, not playing well at that
- 22:02time. If for if for if for anybody
- 22:03doesn't know, you know, Patrick Euring
- 22:05had to get hurt right before the uh
- 22:07right at the at some point I think after
- 22:09the first series in the playoffs and
- 22:11obviously he was their leader who's
- 22:12their best player, but that team rallied
- 22:15around all the other players which spree
- 22:16well. They were the number eight seed
- 22:18that year. They beat Miami in the first
- 22:20round on another incredible moment that
- 22:22I didn't even mention on my list, which
- 22:24was Allen Houston's runner to beat
- 22:25Miami. But they just went into those
- 22:29playoffs hot, confident, and that play,
- 22:33why I had to put it at number six is
- 22:35because everybody always shows the
- 22:37reaction of the Garden when when he hit
- 22:40that four-point play. He hit the three
- 22:42and then of course then he had the free
- 22:43throw. It's it's to me it's the most
- 22:45electric moment that the Garden has ever
- 22:46had. The reaction to that crowd and what
- 22:49had happened, you know, pro I couldn't
- 22:51even remember another four-point play
- 22:53before him making that shot. So, I had
- 22:56your food on the list.
- 22:57>> I I don't remember any four-point play
- 22:58ever to to be exact. It was the most
- 23:02insane thing.
- 23:03>> Uh my cousin happened to be at that
- 23:04game. Keeps telling me he's like it was
- 23:06the most electric moment he's ever had
- 23:08in his life.
- 23:08>> All right. So, what's your number five
- 23:10moment?
- 23:12>> Okay, we got to go back. You know, I'm
- 23:14going back to back here. June 14, 1994.
- 23:17The Rangers erase 54 years.
- 23:20>> Boy is going to go ahead with quick
- 23:22hands. Mavis will have to nullify it.
- 23:24Here it is.
- 23:30THE WAITING IS OVER. THE NEW YORK
- 23:33RANGERS ARE THE STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS
- 23:36>> by winning the Stanley Cup finals, which
- 23:40was enormous at the time. I've New York
- 23:43was electric. The parade was electric.
- 23:46The town was just like buzzing. Um,
- 23:49listen, I'm not a Ranger fan, but it was
- 23:52it was a moment for New York. It was
- 23:53great. Um, if you remember, I remember,
- 23:57you know, like watching hockey games and
- 23:59whenever the Rangers were losing, you
- 24:00heard the chance 1940.
- 24:03>> Yep.
- 24:03>> 1940 when they won, when they were about
- 24:06to win and the New York crowd was
- 24:08chanting 1940 was like goosebumps. It
- 24:10was I mean, listen, I'm not even a
- 24:12Rangers fan, but you had to appreciate
- 24:14the moment.
- 24:15>> So, here's the thing. I'm not a Rangers
- 24:17fan either. Not a big hockey fan. And
- 24:18that was my number one New York sports
- 24:20moment. 94 Rangers and because
- 24:23everything you said leading up to it,
- 24:24the MTO goal, the guarantee from
- 24:27Messier, 54 years of the Rangers not
- 24:30going and winning a cup, everything that
- 24:32preceded it and for them to go through
- 24:34what they went through and finally win
- 24:36it. I mean, if you remember 1994 and you
- 24:38were a a New York sports fan, the Knicks
- 24:40had also made the NBA Finals. They
- 24:41didn't go on to win it. It's a whole
- 24:43different story. But what that era was
- 24:46like is unmatched to me in New York
- 24:48sports. So the Rangers winning the Cup
- 24:50in '94 was my number one moment. It's
- 24:52something that I think every fan will
- 24:55remember for the rest of their lives.
- 24:57And it it was just so long of a drought.
- 24:59I could not do it because so many great
- 25:02players that came through the New York
- 25:04Rangers organization during that time
- 25:05frame from Messier to Leech to to Van
- 25:09Beasbrook to all those guys. Mike
- 25:10Richtor was later on just unbelievable.
- 25:13And for them to finally do it after 54
- 25:15years, I could not put that number one.
- 25:18>> Well, think about when they won, how it
- 25:22was, how the parade was, how the how New
- 25:24York was. If the Knicks win this year,
- 25:29this is going to trump it. I'm telling
- 25:31you right now.
- 25:32>> So, we'll get into that later. I want to
- 25:33bring that up after we finish the list.
- 25:35But, I want to give you my number five.
- 25:37And I this might be your number one
- 25:39because I know you're a big fan.
- 25:40>> I have I have a feeling but go ahead.
- 25:42>> It's the 86 Mets. Bill Buckner with the
- 25:45ball going through his legs.
- 25:46>> Three and two to Mookie Wilson.
- 25:49>> Little roller up along FIRST BEHIND THE
- 25:52BAG. IT GETS THROUGH BUCKNER. HERE COMES
- 25:55KNIGHT. AND THE METS win it.
- 25:58>> How old am I? I'm I'm eight or nine
- 26:00years old at that point. And my dad was
- 26:02a big Mets fan. I was a Mets fan growing
- 26:04up and we'd go to games all the time,
- 26:05just me and him. And I was a huge Met
- 26:08fans growing up between Doc Gooden, Sid
- 26:10Fernandez, Keith Hernandez, Wally
- 26:13Backman, Tim Tuffel, Raphael Santana,
- 26:16Kevin [ __ ] Mitchell, Daryl
- 26:18Strawberry, Gary Carter. I can name
- 26:21probably the entire [ __ ] team.
- 26:22>> Yeah, I do was my favorite, but like
- 26:25>> that was such an alltime moment of the
- 26:28ball going underneath Buckner's legs and
- 26:30the Mets to go on to win that series
- 26:32because they were going to lose. There
- 26:34was no question in anybody's mind at
- 26:36that point they were going to [ __ ]
- 26:38lose. But to me, I had to put this at
- 26:42five only because I was only eight years
- 26:44old. And I while I have a fondness for
- 26:46it, to me, like I I don't think I could
- 26:49appreciate the moment at that time.
- 26:51>> I mean, I did appreciate the moment. I
- 26:52mean, I was nine. We were both nine, but
- 26:54>> yeah.
- 26:55>> Um,
- 26:57they were down. I mean, this was my
- 26:58number one. I This was my number one
- 27:01because this is the moment I I remember
- 27:02forever. And I'll never forget it.
- 27:05>> And that's how sad you said it before.
- 27:06This is how sadness is.
- 27:08>> If if any of these 86 guys like have an
- 27:10appearance, I'm there because it's that
- 27:13is the team. People remember that 86
- 27:15team because of moments like this
- 27:17because of game six in the playoffs.
- 27:20This team was insane. Dyster, all these
- 27:23guys. These guys were all lunatics. So
- 27:25they're down. It's two outs. Bottom of
- 27:28the ninth. They're losing. They're down
- 27:31to the last freaking strike. Nobody on
- 27:34base. And then they start a rally and
- 27:37each guy was like, "I'm not making the
- 27:38last out. I'm not making the last out.
- 27:40I'm not." And I'll tell you, there was a
- 27:41few times I'm I'm like, "Dude, Muki
- 27:42Wilson, he's going to strike out." I'm
- 27:44like, "Mookie Wilson, he's gonna strike
- 27:46out."
- 27:46>> But Muki, the game was tied already when
- 27:48Muki came up. So they had tied the game
- 27:50at that point.
- 27:51>> Yeah. On a on a wild pitch of all things
- 27:54>> and by a former Met. It it was just
- 27:56you're never going to see that. And I
- 27:57think that's probably the last time
- 27:59people rush the field was that 86 World
- 28:01Series. You might be right. Yeah,
- 28:03>> I tell you what, if they win again,
- 28:05people are rushing the field. Believe
- 28:06me,
- 28:06>> you get you get shot nowadays with
- 28:08everything that's going on in this
- 28:09world.
- 28:10>> So, let's get into number four. And to
- 28:12me, this this stands out in my memory as
- 28:15something that was wild. Not not only on
- 28:17one account, but by multiple,
- 28:19and it's for the New York Giants, and
- 28:21I'm not a New York Giants fan. Everybody
- 28:22knows I'm a Giants fan. But because this
- 28:24happened against an 18-0 Patriots team,
- 28:27it it it's number four on my list, and
- 28:29that's the David Tyrie helmet catch.
- 28:31Third down and five.
- 28:40Pressure from Thomas off the edge. Eli
- 28:42Manning stays on his feet. Airs it out
- 28:47down the field.
- 28:49It is CAUGHT BY TYRIE.
- 28:52>> UH, everybody hated the Patriots. You
- 28:54know, I've hated them my entire life,
- 28:56but everybody talks about the Old Dell
- 28:58Beckham catch being one of the greatest
- 28:59catches of all time. to me that David
- 29:01Tyrese's catch was a better catch
- 29:03because of the moment that it occurred
- 29:05in with, you know, the Giants down in
- 29:07the Super Bowl. That that to me was
- 29:09unbelievable. I think if you're a Giants
- 29:12fan, that's got to be in your top two or
- 29:14three moments ever. Uh against a team
- 29:16that was 8 and0 undefeated that
- 29:18everybody thought was going to have an
- 29:19undefeated season.
- 29:21>> So that was my number three. You've now
- 29:24nailed my number four, number three, and
- 29:26number one. So, um, yeah, that catch was
- 29:30absolutely insane. And nobody even talks
- 29:32about
- 29:33everyone talks about the catch. How
- 29:35about the throw? How about the fact that
- 29:37Eli eluded how many defenders
- 29:40and was like slipping away from guys and
- 29:43got that ball off and got it to him? It
- 29:46was the most insane play in Super Bowl
- 29:48history. The most insane. And it's got
- 29:51to be It's got to be up there. 2008,
- 29:55Super Bowl 42. I'm telling you, I mean,
- 29:59nobody thought anyone's nobody thought
- 30:00anyone was beating the Patriots.
- 30:02Patriots, as a Dolphin fan, I was
- 30:04waiting for the Patriots to go down
- 30:06because we're the only undefeated team
- 30:07ever. They went down at the hands of the
- 30:10Giants.
- 30:11>> I mean, just don't forget the Giants had
- 30:13gone down in that game. The Patriots
- 30:14just came back. They they took they took
- 30:16the lead
- 30:17>> and it was just everybody thought he was
- 30:19down. First of all, you know, there's a
- 30:20little bit of controversy because he
- 30:21escapes that pocket, but they could have
- 30:23blown that play dead. They didn't. He
- 30:25escapes, throws a dart. Tyrie catches it
- 30:27on his [ __ ] helmet, not in his hands
- 30:30just in between three guys to boot. It
- 30:32was just I remember where I was. I was
- 30:34at my dad's house watching that game and
- 30:36it was just like I couldn't believe that
- 30:38he caught that ball. I'm like, "What the
- 30:39hell? There's no way he caught that."
- 30:41And they they showed a replay and I was
- 30:42like, "What the hell?" Unbelievable.
- 30:45>> I don't know how he did it. It's just
- 30:47it's that that's what makes things
- 30:49legendary is like that the plays like
- 30:51that.
- 30:51>> So, this is one that that it still
- 30:54haunts me to this day. This was a good
- 30:55moment, but there are many bad moments
- 30:57that have occurred because of this team
- 30:59and because of, you know, where they are
- 31:01now. And that's Euing's putback to send
- 31:03the Knicks to the the 94 finals.
- 31:06>> Here's Snick.
- 31:12The New York Knicks headed to the NBA
- 31:15finals to go up against the Houston
- 31:18Rockets.
- 31:19>> The the Knicks again couldn't get over
- 31:21the hump of Michael Jordan. Obviously,
- 31:24he had retired, went to play baseball,
- 31:26and the Knicks finally had their chance
- 31:27to kind of make it to the finals. Now,
- 31:29the previous series, don't forget the
- 31:31Knicks played the Bulls and there was
- 31:32some controversy already with uh Scotty
- 31:35Pippen fouling Hubert Davis. Hubert
- 31:37Davis goes to the line after hitting
- 31:40like three free throws or the free
- 31:41throws and and to get them to the finals
- 31:44and again crazy game, incredibly
- 31:47physical with the Pacers. Euan comes
- 31:49flying in, puts it back, sends the
- 31:52Knicks to the first finals since since
- 31:541973. They didn't win it. Uh, you know,
- 31:56that's a whole different story. But that
- 31:58moment, I remember watching that, being
- 32:00a huge Knicks fan, and and it's still to
- 32:02this day, one of the greatest New York
- 32:04Knicks moments of all time.
- 32:06>> I'm going to say this, I know it's going
- 32:09to hurt.
- 32:11The Knicks should have won that series.
- 32:14>> They They should have They should have
- 32:16won game six.
- 32:17>> This is This is what people don't
- 32:18understand. when you have like it's so
- 32:21hard to make it to a finals, World
- 32:23Series, Super Bowl, when you get the
- 32:26opportunity to go, you need to win
- 32:30because now look, how many years has
- 32:32this been since the Knicks made it to
- 32:34the finals?
- 32:35>> Uh, since the finals, 27 years.
- 32:39>> Exactly.
- 32:40>> Yeah. But that's
- 32:41>> 94 94 was their best shot. They had no
- 32:43shot in 99. They Noing, no shot.
- 32:45>> I I agree. I think if in 99 if Yuing had
- 32:48stayed healthy, they would have had a
- 32:49shot. Honestly,
- 32:51it would have been closer that 94. They
- 32:53were up 3-2. There was no excuse. They
- 32:56should have won it.
- 32:57>> Correct. Game six.
- 32:58>> Starks went cold.
- 32:59>> He They should have won it in They
- 33:01should have won it in game six. They
- 33:02didn't. And then in game seven, it was a
- 33:04close game, but Starks couldn't hit a
- 33:05shot. So,
- 33:06>> yeah. Starks went cold. It was terrible.
- 33:08I mean, I feel bad. Listen, I'm not a
- 33:10Knicks fan, but when you have family and
- 33:13friends that are Knicks fans, man, and
- 33:14you just feel for them, because that is
- 33:17Listen, I I don't I mean, I'm a Nets
- 33:18fan, but I don't have any beef with the
- 33:20Knicks. I could care less because when
- 33:23we've been good, you guys suck. When
- 33:25you're good, we suck. So, it's not like
- 33:27we've been competitive at the same time.
- 33:30Very, very seldom. The the problem is is
- 33:33with with the Knicks especially is that
- 33:35they have been bad for so long until now
- 33:38that it's been it's been really brutal.
- 33:40I'm going to say something right now
- 33:41like out of all my teams I have one
- 33:44championship and that's a 1986 Mets when
- 33:46I was eight and a half years old or nine
- 33:48years old whenever it happened. To me
- 33:50that's not enough.
- 33:51>> We had the Devils but you're not but
- 33:54you're not really watching hockey
- 33:55anymore so it's different.
- 33:57>> Exactly. I'm not a huge hockey fan. you
- 33:58enjoyed that moment. But for a team that
- 34:01I really cared about, the Knicks, the
- 34:02Jets, you know, the Mets, I only got the
- 34:0586 series. The Mets, you know, obviously
- 34:06went to World Series after the fact.
- 34:07They didn't win it.
- 34:08>> They should have won 15, too.
- 34:10>> They should have won.
- 34:12>> I know.
- 34:12>> They should have won000.
- 34:14>> But that's to our point is that it's,
- 34:16you know, it's really hard to either
- 34:17make it to World Series or NBA finals to
- 34:19the Super Bowl. And when you get there,
- 34:20you have to win because the pain is
- 34:22unbearable. You don't have, especially
- 34:24my teams, they don't have that great
- 34:26player that's going to get you there
- 34:28year after year like the Chiefs with
- 34:29Mahomes or or Tom Brady with the
- 34:31Patriots. All right. So, what's what's
- 34:33your number two?
- 34:34>> Oh, number two. You're not going to even
- 34:36I probably didn't even sniff your list,
- 34:38but it's an ultimate feat that very few
- 34:42have accomplished in the world of
- 34:43baseball. One of the hardest things to
- 34:45do in baseball.
- 34:46>> I think I know what it is.
- 34:47>> It was done on the grandest stage of
- 34:49all.
- 34:50October 8, 1956. Don Larson throws a
- 34:54perfect game.
- 34:55>> Gets the sign. Two strikes. 4-1. Here
- 34:58comes THE PITCH. STRIKE THREE. A no
- 35:01hitter. A perfect game for Don Larson.
- 35:03YOGI VERA RUNS out there. He leaps on
- 35:06Larson and he's SWARMED BY HIS TEAMMATE
- 35:10in the World Series game five. And not
- 35:12only did he throw a perfect game, but he
- 35:15threw a perfect game against the
- 35:16Brooklyn Dodgers with that ridiculous
- 35:19lineup that they had. you know, everyone
- 35:22like perfect games are impossible,
- 35:25but especially back then there were so
- 35:27few teams that the teams were
- 35:29concentrated with talent. Don't look at
- 35:32baseball now with everything's watered
- 35:33down because there's so many teams that
- 35:36broken do Dodgers lineup had like five
- 35:38or six Hall of Famers easily and he
- 35:41mowed them down in the World Series.
- 35:43Biggest stage of all 1956 and it still
- 35:47stands to this day as the only perfect
- 35:49game throw in the World Series.
- 35:51>> You can't say that. Yeah, it it it is it
- 35:54is I put it as number two because
- 35:56obviously number one for me was as a Met
- 35:58fan Mookie Wilson, but
- 36:02I I don't know how I mean like I mean
- 36:04listen I didn't witness it but
- 36:07just to see like you don't see perfect
- 36:09games. You just don't you don't see and
- 36:11and let alone in the World Series like
- 36:13it's hard to see a no hitter. Look how
- 36:15long the Mets went without a no hit. I
- 36:17was going to put that on the list but
- 36:18I'm like you know what? They sucked. I'm
- 36:20not putting on the list. This this feat
- 36:23is this will trump anything. That's why
- 36:25I put at number two because you you I
- 36:27mean on the grandest stage they won the
- 36:29World Series. On the grandest stage, you
- 36:31throw a perfect game. It just you can't
- 36:33you can't repeat that.
- 36:35>> All right. So my number two is the Piana
- 36:37911 home run.
- 36:38>> My number one is Mookie. I don't know
- 36:40what your number one is. Actually, you
- 36:41did mention your number one.
- 36:43>> Yeah, it was the Rangers winning the cup
- 36:45in 1994,
- 36:46>> which is which is a good one.
- 36:48>> No. Yeah. I mean, to me, it's just I had
- 36:49to put something that even though I'm
- 36:51not a Rangers fan, that that it meant
- 36:53something to to New York City when I was
- 36:55alive. I felt I find I find it hard to
- 36:57put something that I wasn't alive being
- 36:59number one. That's why I had the Jets at
- 37:01number 10 winning Super Bowl three
- 37:02because I wasn't around for it. But
- 37:04there will be other people who probably
- 37:05listen to this and be like, you know
- 37:06what, that that Jets Super Bowl should
- 37:08be a lot higher. You know, other things
- 37:10like that should be a lot lower. But
- 37:12regardless, we've covered all our list
- 37:15already. So, it I wanted to ask you this
- 37:18and and I think it's a good question
- 37:19with everything that's going on with the
- 37:20Knicks right now. If the Knicks go on to
- 37:23win this NBA Finals, where would you
- 37:25rank it on our list or would not would
- 37:27it not be on there?
- 37:28>> Um, honestly,
- 37:30I would have put it top three because
- 37:34number one, the the length of the
- 37:36drought,
- 37:38the streak that they had where they just
- 37:39mowed down
- 37:41every opponent. Honestly, if it wasn't
- 37:44for the refs, I think they they probably
- 37:46would have won last night. They just
- 37:47they would have won. The game was close.
- 37:50It just the dude I can't believe how
- 37:53dirty this team is. The Spurs. They just
- 37:56like punching. They're straight up like
- 37:57punching them down the throat and Nicks
- 37:59can't even Knicks like they'll barely
- 38:01touch them and they're calling flagrance
- 38:02against them. It's insane.
- 38:03>> Yeah, the Knicks have to win game four.
- 38:06If they don't win four, I think they're
- 38:07in they're in the world of trouble. But
- 38:09>> I bring I bring it up because I want to
- 38:11talk a little bit about the team is
- 38:12because I I I'm putting it number one or
- 38:14two if they're able to go out and win a
- 38:16championship. Now, I'm putting it one or
- 38:17two because
- 38:18>> if you look at how this team played the
- 38:20entire year and you look at how they
- 38:21played in the first series against
- 38:23Atlanta, something happened after game
- 38:24three where they just went on a tear and
- 38:28like you said were mowing down everybody
- 38:30they faced. They won 13 straight. Now,
- 38:32of course, they're going up a better a
- 38:34better opponent in the Spurs, but like
- 38:36being that this team is unsuspecting.
- 38:38Obviously, Jaylen Brunson is their best
- 38:40player, but there is no true guy. Like,
- 38:43he's that guy, but this team is like
- 38:45there's not full of stars. There's no
- 38:47Michael Jordan. There's there's no
- 38:48there's no Kevin Durant and Steph Curry
- 38:51and whatever on this team. There's not a
- 38:53bunch of guys. It's a team playing team
- 38:55basketball. And I think it's this
- 38:57unsuspecting run is so
- 39:00out of character. I would say that's a
- 39:03that's a good way to use it. So
- 39:04>> I I'll make a I'll make a a a comp to
- 39:07this. So where you have Brunson as your
- 39:09main guy,
- 39:11but basically everybody else is just
- 39:13like a cast of characters, right?
- 39:16The 2000 Mets, you had Piaza was your
- 39:18guy, but you look at that team, they had
- 39:21no business in in the World Series.
- 39:23Those guys, like dude, Bobby Valentine,
- 39:26hands down best manager of all time for
- 39:28the Mets. got that team to the World
- 39:30Series. They had a bunch of no-names. I
- 39:34mean, yeah, Robin Ventura, but he's not
- 39:35no superstar, right? Hgar Alonso, great
- 39:38player, not a superstar. Like all the
- 39:40guys they had, it was just like a
- 39:41hodgepodge of just like I mean, you look
- 39:44at that outfield, man. Benny Abayan, I
- 39:46mean, these guys like they were like
- 39:49gone after a couple years.
- 39:51>> Nobody ever heard of them.
- 39:52>> But that team is still beloved. Don't
- 39:54forget like because they made it. That's
- 39:56the whole thing like about New York
- 39:57sports is that if you have a team that's
- 39:59not destined to be great
- 40:02>> and they do something great, they become
- 40:04legends. If you'd like to become a
