- 0:16Speaker 2: Question worth asking around the state of the economy of
- 0:20Speaker 2: things are so bad? Why are so many of us
- 0:21Speaker 2: starting businesses? And we are? Sixty two thousand and sixty
- 0:24Speaker 2: one companies were incorporated in the past year. This is
- 0:27Speaker 2: the most since twenty twenty one. There's almost nineteen hundred
- 0:30Speaker 2: new construction firms, more than one thousand cleaning companies, six
- 0:32Speaker 2: hundred and twelve restaurants, six hundred one clothing retailers. Chris
- 0:35Speaker 2: Wilkinson as the first retail group managing director and he's
- 0:38Speaker 2: with us. Chris Morning, get a Mike. Stats don't lie.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I mean everyone's open upper business. What's going on?
- 0:45Speaker 3: Oh? I look with your three three key drivers, I think, Mike,
- 0:47Speaker 3: one is the gig economy is reducing the barriers. And secondly,
- 0:51Speaker 3: we've got inflation bring that GST threshold closer, so it's
- 0:55Speaker 3: pushing people in too make decisions about their businesses. And
- 0:58Speaker 3: that third as people wanting to regain control in life
- 1:01Speaker 3: and self employments.
- 1:02Speaker 2: The way so regain control is interesting because the media
- 1:06Speaker 2: will tell you life is miserable. We're not spending any
- 1:08Speaker 2: money the economies and the doldrums. What you're telling me,
- 1:11Speaker 2: and what these numbers show me is people march to
- 1:14Speaker 2: their own tune. Is that fair?
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, absolutely, we're seeing it across all the communities
- 1:19Speaker 3: we work with around New zund and obseas as well.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Are you seeing anything within these categories, I mean, as
- 1:25Speaker 2: nineteen hundred construction firms, Is that just Bob and his
- 1:28Speaker 2: mate who's got a housing contract he wants to go
- 1:31Speaker 2: back building housing again?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Well, as a lot of these big contracts start to
- 1:35Speaker 3: wind up, these guys for coming out of those or
- 1:38Speaker 3: guys and girls coming out of these projects and going
- 1:40Speaker 3: what are we going to do? Starting up their own
- 1:42Speaker 3: business is really one of the only choices they have.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah. The immigrant community. I had a conversation with some
- 1:47Speaker 2: immigrants the other day and I find it interesting. Is
- 1:50Speaker 2: there an attitude within the immigrant community that opening a
- 1:53Speaker 2: business is just what they do and there's no shame
- 1:57Speaker 2: in opening one, in closing one, and opening one and
- 1:58Speaker 2: closing one. There's a bit of that about it, and
- 2:00Speaker 2: therefore that's just the way they think about business.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Significantly, and in the provinces we're seeing a lot more
- 2:08Speaker 3: immigrants opening businesses, street businesses, service businesses, those types of things.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Is this bullish? Are you know, fizzed up by this?
- 2:18Speaker 3: Oh? Look, I think it's positive. I always find it
- 2:20Speaker 3: positive when we're working in a place and see someone
- 2:23Speaker 3: who's opened a business and they want to make a
- 2:26Speaker 3: go of it where other people didn't see those opportunities.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Good stuff and right nice to talk to us always,
