BONUS EPISODE: BFF The Golden Years Game Session · Story Games

• Maggie Studio: and welcome back to Story Games, a podcast all about your favorite tabletop role-playing games with a specific focus on narrative-driven games. My name is Momo and I will be your host. Today I'm bringing you a bit of a bonus episode. This is just a little something we've recorded in between recording sessions and I'm really excited to bring it to you today. Basically, we are working on our newest game which is called BFF The Golden Years. And if you're familiar with our games, you might know that we already have a game called BFF Best Friends Forever. This is its sequel. And I say sequel loosely. In Best Friends Forever, you play as preteen girls going on adventures together. And in BFF The Golden Years, you play as old women going on adventures together. We are still producing it. We're still working on it. But we do have a playable prototype, and that is what we're playing today. So join me, and Kaliope as we test out BFF The Golden Years. I will talk more about this in a minute, but you can also follow our Kickstarter page. It will be in the show notes and it will really help us out if you follow and just stay up to date with what's going on with this game. All right, without further ado, enjoy BFF The Golden Years. Hello, heart of the Deer and the Corn friends. Welcome back to another game session. My name is Momo and I am here with Kaliope and I am here with Lo. And today we are going to play something very exciting. So this is a prototype of the newest Heart of the Deer and Acorn game that we have a Kickstarter page for. The Kickstarter has not launched yet, but you can be notified when the Kickstarter is live if you go to the Kickstarter page, which will be linked in the description box down below. All that fun stuff. But this is BFF The Golden Years. And if you're familiar with our games, may be familiar with BFF Best Friends Forever, which is a game about preteen girls going on adventures. This is about old women going on adventures. It's the golden years and we're very excited about it. It is very, very fun. It's very mechanically similar to BFF, but again, you're playing as old ladies instead of preteen girls. So that's what we're doing today. Perfect. Hell yeah. Okay. So I'm just going to jump right on in ⁓ and we're going to play a session. Now this is a prototype, this is not the finished copy yet, so it is a little rough in some places, so bear with us. But we have our little magazine full of outings that we're gonna go on. These are our adventures. We do have more outings printed out on paper here that have not made it into the booklet yet. And we've got our little things, we've got our cards, we've got our stuff. Yes, okay. I'm gonna take a minute and lay out all of these characters. Do we get charm bracelets in this one? We get purses. Oh my god. Purses! We get purses. And we get to put stuff in our purses. Yay! Cause you've played BFF before, right? Yeah. Have you played? No. Oh. Well. We can play BFF. I had a copy. We can play it. Next round. Hell yeah. When we're for sure invited back because we had so much fun and did so great. Absolutely! Oh my god. Ooh, I love it. I know a vow I might be tempted by. She's so fun. And all of the character art is so beautiful. Jabari Weathers, I believe, did the character art for this. And all of our old ladies are so diverse and varied in not only just like, you know, skin tone and race, but also just like pure vibes. Like... very different vibes. That's one of the things that I love about this game is that it doesn't typecast old ladies into the old grandma role. They're just women who are old and women have very very personalities and it doesn't matter if you grow old you're still you know a unique person and that is reflected in this game which I love. Oh my god she's so cute. Also guess who did the background arts? Bloom. ⁓ you can tell. You can tell. You can tell. Blue Evermore did the background art and his work is also amazing. All the artists who worked on this game are amazing. Stacked. Please help. you. Attempted to just watch, but how dare. All right, so we have our array of old ladies here and we're going to start by picking a lady. I will go last because I always have like two that I go for. Oh really? But I don't want to take them from you if you want one. Okay. Oh man. I like the spooky one. Yes! They're so cute. Have their shoes. Oh, they're adorable. I do still like Mel. Hell yeah. I know I'm gonna be yelling on my cell phone. Let's do it. get there. I know that's my future. Let's go. She's so cute. Yes. Which one do you like? little... Awww, she looks cozy. Like a little cozy guy. Yay. I'm going with Ruby. Amazing. Macungle Lady. Amazing. I was wondering if you'd Ruby or Zoe. Ruby or Zoe are my go-tos. The spooky girls. As if it isn't apparently obvious that I will be a spooky girl even when I'm Hell yeah. We can only hope to be. We can only hope to be. Truly! Like I wanna be the sick one when I'm old. She's so cool. She's green hair! I'll never be that cool. I'll never be her. I'll never be her. I'll try. Okay, so the next thing we're going to do is we're going to pick a purse. And we are going to put things in our purse. Okay, now pick one that speaks to you. For you, darling. We gotta make sure that we're like on brand, right? our girlies? Absolutely, absolutely. ⁓ I think red for Val because she's coordinated. She's angry, but she's coordinated. She knows how to style. She knows how to style. Yes. Great. I feel like she's a little mix matched and I feel like she would love a fanny pack. A fanny pack? Oh yeah, I wonder And I'm going with the big ridiculous black bag that probably fits so many things on it. Awesome! So now what we're going to do, this is very similar to the first BFF, we are going to pick something, we're going to pick something that fits in our purse, that represents us as a character, and then we're also going to pick something that represents our relationship with another player. So we're going to pick one for us, and then one for the person to our right. And then that item will represent something about our relationship, because we're all friends. It's established, we are all already friends. Okay, so I will go first, kind of show y'all how it's done. And there are tons of just little, um, tchotchkes and knickknacks and things in here that will help us kind of nail down our character. And, oh, okay. I'm gonna go with the super glue. Because Ruby always has crazy acrylic nails on. Always. And ⁓ they often fall off because she doesn't like to go to the salon and get them done because she likes to be able to take them off when she wants to. But however, she always carries super glue with her. So if one falls off and she doesn't want it to, she can super glue it back on. Nice. Nice. And then you are Val. What inspires you? OK, I'm giving you the hot sauce because Val is fearless. And one time we went out to a Mexican restaurant and we ate tacos. Oh. And I was really scared because they had ghost pepper hot sauce. I remember. You remember. I remember. And I was too scared to try it because I have weak, weak taste buds. But you were like, I got this and you ate the tacos with the ghost pepper hot sauce and you didn't even blink an eye. And then I stole the bottle And then you stole the bottle of hot sauce. I'm taking this. This is mine. I wanted you to think it was cool. I was like, can think it was. Clutomania is cool. Yeah. Alright, so now you can pick one for yourself and one for Kaliope's character. Okay, Kaliope, we're gonna establish our best friendship right now. Oh my god, it's now or never. Okay, let's make our best High stakes, okay? High stakes. Okay, first I got my girl Val. Okay, Val, what's up, girl? You are angry. I think Val... She's got her regular glasses, but she's also got sunglasses because you can just tell by this delightful, cantankerous, ⁓ passage that she, she's judging people, you know, she's sort of the worst part of me, but like, the best. And so she wears her sunglasses when she's sort of like, you know, eyeing people, you know. they bifocal sunglasses? bitch! Yes! She's like... You know, him up and down. Alright, Glyphie, or Minnie, should say. Alright, girl. Looking cozy. She's so cute. This is what I want to be. I just always want to be wrapped in like a little blankie. You deserve that. Thank you. I think I do. You will have earned it. I will. I'm tempted by the blank. But, Minnie, I think you are super cozy and I think you like took up knitting in your years. Maybe you knit that shawl. Oh yeah. I did in fact. It took ages with the arthritis. You hung in there, dearie. Took you two years. It took me two years! But I got there. Okay, so. And that's what matters. That's what matters here, okay. Um, I feel like me. I want to do our friendship establishing and I'm hoping that something in here will be related to bingo and me dragging your ass to bingo. No, I hate bingo. Minnie's just all cozy. She's like, I love bingo. Bingo-ing. Tuesday nights at Drift. Maybe Ruby secretly likes it though. She just can't let Minnie know it. She has to be too cool for it. Yeah, she's like eyeing the prizes. Can we pretend to like... Is that a NutriBullet? Okay, ⁓ can we pretend this is a bingo card? Like, we're taking it to bingo? I think that's our little friendship piece. Yay! then... ⁓ my god. Minnie just goes through so many faces. I don't even know what would suit her. I love them. Candy. Get a little... I'm so excited! When you unwrap them, it's all loud. It's like loud. In the middle of bingo, it's like, Ruby, do you wanna ⁓ Hearing aid falls out. Shouting. Thank you, Minnie! Wonderful! Oh, I'm already having so much fun. Okay, perfect. Okay, so now we're going to choose an outing. So, basically we have these different maps we can play on. One is Bingo Day at the Zoo. You know we're going to be It's in the run and go. But, just for completionist's sake, we also have Dante's Happy Hour, which is 5 to 7. called by seven. We've got Solstice at Zoe's, which is like a witchy kind of, you know, solstice party. And then we've got Gigi's funeral. And one thing that I do love about this game is that it's very fun and silly and lighthearted with surprising moments of, yeah, we are aging and getting old and that is part of life. So I think it's a cool balance of like celebrating life and also moment of worry in a way. Which is neat and I love that. We've also got Ruby's Basement, which is like a cool cool like punk show. We've got, I'm not doing that one. Oh gosh. Again, it's a prototype. We just got a work party. She's so cool. Gosh. I know. I'll never be as cool as Ruby. She's got a merch table in her basement. She's got a merch table in her basement and bloom hid little deer and acorns. Amazing. In here. Absolutely. Because he's insane. Okay, and that's what we've got. So. Do you want to do bingo day at zoo? I think know where to go. It's a sign. Ruby secretly wants to go, we're like, love Ruby. she's like, I don't want to go on bingo night. Come on, get in the car. Do you think we could win as a zoo animal? I want a limo. I would love to take a limo home. I feel like she loves the I'd love to take a limo. So the game is supposed to come with bingo chips. We do not have the bingo chips at the moment. So we will be using dice. I'm down. Amazing. How Bingo Day at the Zoo works. ⁓ It's Bingo Day at Golden City Zoo. When you lead a scene, look at the prompts on the bingo card and tell us what you're on the lookout for. Once per scene, anyone may play a token to the bingo card and use the prompt on that space to describe what we see. When we score a bingo, five in a row, describe turning in our card for a reward and end the outing. So we have ⁓ little things here which we can interpret in any way we see fit. We've got like a penguin, an elephant, a camera, a bat, a monkey giraffe, someone throwing something away, binoculars, someone peeing, which is fun, a baby, a proposal, and it looks like a science experiment? I didn't even notice the proposal. Yeah, at the zoo? At the zoo. You know what, maybe it was the first day we meet. Maybe it's in front of the lemurs. We never know. Those lemurs, they're romantic. They're really romantic. They have all the tails. Get it, So that they're bigger than jumping around. I remember when I was like, young. I remember when I could jump. Now my knees just go... So how this game works is we will lead series of scenes and to do that we have these cards. So I'm going to hand out, believe it's three or five? I'm gonna hand out five cards to each of us and... When it is our turn, we play a single card. So people like to get really excited and play all the cards all at once. We play a single card per round. Okay. ⁓ two, three, four, five. One, three, four, five. One, two, know how to wait for. Yes. Five. Maybe I will learn that someday. This is what I'm trying to embody. So the cards will have prompts on them. Yes, you can look at them. So. You don't have to start the scene with the prompt. You just have to use it somewhere within the prompt. And I will go first and kind of like show you how it's done. But basically we're just going to set up the scene, incorporate the prompt, invite us all to kind of participate in role play in the scene, end the prompt, and also in the back of our heads we're looking out for these here. So if we can incorporate any of this into the prompt somehow, we can mark it off on the bingo sheet. I'm so I'm excited. I'm I'm I got my motor scooter. I charged my batteries this morning. I am ready. Ready to go. I'm ready. Okay, so I'm gonna start us all out in the parking lot. Roll up. Primo parking. Handicap parking. We're right there. Okay. So we get to the park, we get to the zoo, right? It's packed. There's so many people here. And I don't know about you guys, but my knees ain't what they used to be. So what we see the long line to get in the long admission line. And I turned you and I'm like, I'm not waiting in line. I'm not doing that. So Val, we're going to do what we do best and we are going to exploit your disability. Again. sister. We are. Yes, we are. Yes. And I'm going to walk right up to the front of the line. I'm going to knock on the window. There's someone obviously being... Exactly. Yeah. There's someone obviously being held and knock up to the window, go, excuse me, sir. Excuse me. And then if there's an NPC, anyone can kind of jump in and play an NPC at any time. Okay. Who wants to be the poor, poor zoo employee? Oh, I'll let you take this. Okay, sure. Okay. Excuse me, sir. Excuse me. Hi. What do you want? I'm gonna ask for an accommodation. Yeah? My girlfriend here. She can't walk very well. I can see that. Exactly. So we need to use the little... need to find the line. We need to get up there. Front of the line? Front of line. I know, that's not really what we offer for people just rolling up that I haven't met before. Well, she can't walk very well. You want to switch her to... She's scooting along. You want me to use the rest of her batteries waiting in line? Is that what you want? Yeah. How long does it take to charge? It takes lot of it. No, they need the special outlets like for electric vehicles. All right. It's a packed day. It is. So you guys better get in there. Yeah! High five! High five! Sorry, my hands are naturally sweaty. Did they get wet? It's boring. Can I ask one question? Yeah? we have these items in our bathroom? Yeah! Could I have just like slapped it on there and be like, here's a candy. Totally! Yeah, you do that? It was a little so so. You look like somebody who likes some Pepple Man chips. Beautiful! And then we walk into the park and then we get to skip the whole long line and I don't think I saw anything on the bingo card so I'm just gonna end the scene there. And then the other mechanic that we do is when we end a scene we give the card to someone who we feel deserves it in that moment and for being an awesome NPC I'm gonna give that to you. Even though I was cantankerous? though you were cantankerous. did eventually. Yeah, I was ready to hold you up all day there. I know you can use that if you want you can add it to your hand. So yeah, that is yours. Sweet. Okay, and is it... Are we going clockwise or? Let's go... this is counterclockwise. We're doing counterclockwise. We're getting crazy with it. charm order. Yes, in order. In a central order. Yes. Okay. All right. Val's in. Okay. So then we get to choose where we're going to go. We can choose any of these little places here. And we can choose any prompt and any of these bingo things. We'll put the thing on the free space. I am going to head to the aquarium. Yeah. Fish, fish, fish, fish, fish. My head. And I want to see the special take, but I'm going to ask for a discount. Let's go. I never pay full price. Val never pays full price. I'm on my phone. ⁓ I'm angry at the AARP or something, I don't know. I'm angry at something. Call my doctor's office. Just because. Just to feel alive. Just to feel something. And I want to go... I wanna go into the aquarium, into this special tank. I wanna do the touch tank thing. Yes. Costs extra. I'm not gonna pay that much. $5? No. That's $15 for all of us. No, it's just not. I'll give you $10. $10. $10. That's fair. a senior discount? Yeah! That's how I was gonna start for sure. Do you wanna be the person I'm arguing with for it? Yes. Okay. Let's solidify our friendship. Guys, do you remember? I regretted my marriages. I had like three of them and it was just... My god. Can you believe these people are getting married right now? Or maybe, I don't know, did I ruin it? I too loud? They're Like, they've stopped. He's like, mid-face. They're both just staring. Straight, cold-faced. Like, no expression on their faces. And I'm just gonna walk up to them. So we make a beeline for the penguins, because the penguins are the best. they're like, this like, the kind of enclosure where it's like they're a little too close, you know? You know these penguins are endangered. We're valuable. But, we're gonna break a law together. Together! Together! Together! You know it's always been a dream of mine to... to touch a penguin. So unfortunately, Ruby does not succeed in grabbing a penguin, but she does very briefly brush one with her hand, which is still breaking the law. You got to touch it. That's true. And I got to touch it. We can tell our friends. What did it feel can tell my grandkids. Fluffy. It's a baby penguin. They've got feathers. look fluffy. They're fluffy. I think they're fluffy. Pretty sure. It is glorious. I feel like I'm alive today. Wow. I left her man crying. We could go pay to pet otters now if you guys want. It's not as fun as... Nah, it's fine. Yeah. I bet they got baby otters. I bet they got baby otters. Okay, let's go. And I'll put a little thing over there. Hell yeah. We're making a bingo. Bingo. And then I'm going to give this to you for holding my feet. that's right. It's Val's turn. What does Val want to do? Val, you want to see an alligator? Participate in science? Science? Science? Science? There is a science center. Science center? I'm buzzing at full buzz. I'm heading over to the science center. Science! We're over, I don't know what our route is. You know, once you get to like 80 or something, I feel like that's the time to start experimenting. There is not much time left. What else are you gonna do? Water was too cold, my hands seized up. The ones I got in there don't feel anything. So she's gonna buzz up and she sees the people preparing and she's like, Ruby, you guys got sprite on sprite legs. Yeah. Got his mosh pit legs. People hear you creaking and coming, buddy. it. You see that? You see that bar over there? ⁓ I see it. They're prepping for that stupid party tonight for that stupid business. yeah. There ain't no way they got all those balls counted enough to know that one is gonna be missing. Nope. No. Now if we can get some, we can share a cocktail. ⁓ I'm gonna use my expert complaining skills and I'm gonna call them over distract them distract them. Yeah, I'm gonna run to the- Nobody's gonna suspect Minnie, she's adorable! She's adorable! She's got the- she's got the cozy chancho. The chancho's me out. I'll be the divergent. Just like taking bottles, putting them in the bin. My wheelchair nearly toppled over. Now do you want to deal with a lawsuit on your hands young man? I think we got four bottles. We sober up before we head home. We do. We do. We the rest of the day meandering and then we eventually sober up and go home. Just drying out in savanna.
