- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hi, team. Welcome to the show.
- 0:24Today in this episode, I want to shed a little bit more light on
- 0:28what to do with the limiting beliefs or the negative stories
- 0:32that you might have bouncing around in your head.
- 0:35A common conversation with coaching clients is OK.
- 0:39It's great that I have this new awareness of my limiting beliefs
- 0:45or my saboteurs or my negative stories.
- 0:48Those words are all kind of interchangeable in the coaching
- 0:50space. It's great that I have this
- 0:52awareness. Thank you so much.
- 0:53Now I'm just very hyper aware that I have all these limiting
- 0:57beliefs bouncing around and it seems to be kind of my main
- 1:01focus now. So what do I do about that?
- 1:03And it's a great question. The whole point of understanding
- 1:09limiting beliefs, negative stories, saboteurs or blind
- 1:12spots, whatever you want to call them, the whole point of that is
- 1:16to have awareness that those stories are a very specific
- 1:22perspective that you view the world through a lens, a filter
- 1:28through which you view your circumstances.
- 1:31And when we can understand that those stories and those beliefs,
- 1:34they're not us. They're not our genetic makeup,
- 1:38our DNA, they're not how we're wired.
- 1:41And they're actually just a lens, a filter, a perspective.
- 1:46It's really empowering because then you can be in choice and
- 1:50you can choose a different perspective.
- 1:53And this whole concept, it takes a while to wrap our brains
- 1:56around because we're not taught to think about things this way.
- 2:00In fact, as we grow up, we pick up stories, we pick up limiting
- 2:06beliefs, we pick up these saboteurs based on our lived
- 2:10experiences and we start to think that they are us.
- 2:14We'll say to ourselves, oh, I'm a perfectionist.
- 2:17Oh, I'm such a people pleaser. You know, if we even have that
- 2:19language, we start to associate the ways that we think with ways
- 2:26of being. Oh, I'm just wired that way.
- 2:28That's how I am. That's how that's just the way
- 2:31things are for me. When in fact it's not true
- 2:35because we are capable of change.
- 2:38We're capable of shifting and growing and behaving differently
- 2:43than we might have historically behaved, but we have to
- 2:46understand 1st that it's the perspectives that drive our
- 2:50behavior. There's a formula that we talked
- 2:52about in coaching CTFAR, and I'll tell you kind of what that
- 2:57means and then how this saboteur idea blends in with this.
- 3:01So the first word that we would consider is C circumstances or
- 3:07experiences, situations, however you want to call it.
- 3:10It's just the facts. It's what is happening in front
- 3:13of us or what is happening in the world.
- 3:15So circumstances would trigger T, which is thoughts.
- 3:21Circumstances trigger thoughts and thoughts then produce
- 3:25feelings. Feelings then generate actions A
- 3:30and then actions will cause our results are or outcomes.
- 3:35Now we have to understand 1st that the circumstances are the
- 3:38situations that are going on. That's just data.
- 3:41Those are just facts, and it is our perspective or the lens or
- 3:45filter that we view that data through that will then produce
- 3:49thoughts and then feelings and then actions and results.
- 3:53It is the filter through which this information is coming
- 3:56through that shapes how we think and feel about things.
- 4:00Let's use a really common example.
- 4:03A lot of people love dogs. They they're like, dogs are the
- 4:07best thing in the world. I want to have a million dogs.
- 4:10I want to talk about dogs. I want to pet every dog that
- 4:13walks by me, and that's great. The majority of people love
- 4:16dogs. I think dogs are fine.
- 4:18They're not. I'm a cat person, but whatever.
- 4:21Some people do not like dogs at all.
- 4:25Some people are terrified of dogs.
- 4:28The experiences that people have early in life are going to shape
- 4:32their thoughts and feelings about the circumstances in front
- 4:36of them. So if a dog walks by and you
- 4:38have somebody who was chased by a dog or bit by a dog at a very
- 4:42young age, that experience created a story in their mind.
- 4:45I'm afraid of dogs. It's then become a lens, a
- 4:49perspective, a filter through which they view information.
- 4:53And so when a dog walks by them, they're terrified.
- 4:56They're viewing that information, that data through
- 4:58that lens and they want to get the hell out of there.
- 5:01Whereas somebody who was raised with a dog had a great
- 5:05experience, had a family dog they loved, they loved on them,
- 5:08they were cuddly. It was a great experience.
- 5:11That person is going to see that dog walking by, view it through
- 5:15their own personal filter of I like dogs, dogs are safe, and
- 5:19they're going to say, Oh my God, I'm going to go pet that dog and
- 5:22I want to take it home with me. Same circumstance, but two very
- 5:25different experiences of that circumstance based on the story
- 5:30that that person has acquired through their lived experiences.
- 5:33This is really important and it's really powerful to
- 5:37understand that we have the ability to change perspectives,
- 5:42substitute in a different story if we have the awareness that
- 5:46this is a story to begin with. You ever heard that saying you
- 5:51can't believe everything you think or you can't believe
- 5:55everything you feel? This formula CT FAR is exactly
- 6:02why our thoughts are so often generated by old historical
- 6:07stories. There's another saying what's
- 6:10historical often becomes hysterical, and that is because
- 6:15the things that have happened in our past often become very blown
- 6:19up in terms of how powerful they can be.
- 6:24So you can't believe everything that you think and feel because
- 6:28old historical or hysterical stories are the things that are
- 6:34influencing thoughts and feelings, which then shape our
- 6:38behavior, our actions, and then create our results and our
- 6:43outcomes. And people who get the same
- 6:45outcomes over and over again, and they're frustrated because
- 6:48nothing's changing in their life, it's often because they're
- 6:51not going back far enough in the formula to create change.
- 6:55They're working so hard at changing their actions and their
- 6:58behavior. But that's only one step back
- 7:01from results, the actions phase in the formula, we got to go
- 7:05back further. We have to go to feelings.
- 7:09We have to go back to thoughts. And then even before that, let's
- 7:14look at the story, the lens, the perspective through which we are
- 7:20viewing the circumstances, the situation, the experience at
- 7:24hand. Because if we go all the way
- 7:26back to the beginning of the formula and we start making
- 7:29change there, that's when we can start to actually create a
- 7:32different outcome and result. In the past, we talked about
- 7:37saboteurs and we've described how these stories are created
- 7:40often at a young age, usually between the age of 7 and 15
- 7:45roughly, some much earlier, some later in life.
- 7:48But often when we are growing up, we're having lived
- 7:51experiences. But we have to remember those
- 7:54lived experiences are happening when our brains are still
- 7:58developing. In fact, the prefrontal cortex,
- 8:00which is the place of rational thought, logical thought, the
- 8:03prefrontal cortex is underdeveloped until we're later
- 8:07in our 20s. And so often we have a lack of
- 8:10context of the world. Our worlds are still pretty
- 8:13small when we're young and we have an underdeveloped brain and
- 8:16we are creating these stories about life during a time where
- 8:20we don't have all the information.
- 8:22And so what's happening for people out in the world when
- 8:25they are not investing in their growth or self development,
- 8:28What's happening so often is people are walking around
- 8:32letting their old historical stories, their saboteurs run the
- 8:36damn show. And remember, those stories were
- 8:39created when they were young. And so if you think about it,
- 8:42you're like, do I want my 13 year old self, my 13 year old
- 8:47stories about people pleasing or hyper vigilance or being a
- 8:53victim or perfectionism? Do I want those stories running
- 8:58the show in my life as a 44 year old?
- 9:02It's really interesting and it makes a lot of sense because so
- 9:05many people, they lack this awareness of their own stories
- 9:09and they lack the awareness that they're leading with their old
- 9:13pain or their old fear. So often now there are a lot of
- 9:18different ways to look at limiting beliefs and this is
- 9:22just one frame. It's one way of looking at these
- 9:26things that has made a lot of sense to me and has helped me
- 9:30create change in my own life. I think when we look at this
- 9:34formula, CTFAR circumstances trigger thoughts, produce
- 9:39feelings, generate actions, cause results.
- 9:43It's really helpful to see, to envision this process that
- 9:47happens to us every single day and recognizing that just after
- 9:52the circumstances, we have layered a filter, a story,
- 9:57whatever the perspective or the story or the filter might be
- 10:00based on our lived experiences, which will then influence the
- 10:04rest of that formula downstream. People who have had great
- 10:08experiences with their families during the holidays, who've had
- 10:12a lot of joy and celebration around the holiday season, are
- 10:16going to have a lot of warm fuzzy feelings around the
- 10:19holidays. They're going to have a great
- 10:20experience during the months of November and December.
- 10:23People who have had negative experiences, who've experienced
- 10:27loss or sadness, who've not had great family connections during
- 10:31those times, they might not have the same feelings about the
- 10:34holiday season. People who've had great
- 10:36experiences with sports and have gotten a lot out of it and have
- 10:40experienced camaraderie and teamwork and growth, they're
- 10:43going to love sports. They're going to be excited
- 10:46about playing them or watching them or talking about them.
- 10:49Whereas people who didn't have great experiences with sports or
- 10:52really didn't have much exposure to them, they're not going to
- 10:55have the same feelings about it. So you can see how the ways in
- 10:59which we were brought up, the things that we were exposed to,
- 11:02the circumstances, the data that we experienced as a young person
- 11:08and growing up is going to then shape the lens, the filter, the
- 11:12perspectives that we have. And we carry those things with
- 11:16us. And when we can understand that,
- 11:17we can be a little bit more empowered so that we can then be
- 11:20in choice and say, OK, I recognize that I have some
- 11:24saboteurs, that I have some limiting beliefs and I can start
- 11:26to become aware of those. I can start to call those out.
- 11:29I'm going to look at this data in front of me.
- 11:31I'm going to recognize that my perfectionist or my people
- 11:34pleaser is really rare enough in me, and I'm going to choose
- 11:36something different. So as you're navigating the next
- 11:41couple of months, the rest of this holiday season, getting
- 11:43into the new year, there's lots of energy during this time of
- 11:46year. Remember this formula.
- 11:48See circumstances trigger thoughts T produce feelings F
- 11:55generate actions a which cause results R And right after that
- 12:01first step, circumstances, we apply our lens, our filter based
- 12:06on our lived experiences. And if we can remember that and
- 12:09be in choice about which lens we want to choose, which
- 12:11perspective we want to choose, that downstream formula is going
- 12:15to be a lot more powerful for us.
