2:06
you may imagine, we have candidates. We got a few this morning.
2:08
Scott James, current mayor of Saint Albans whos that would to be re elected
2:13
is Standy Vale. Will get to him in a matter of moments. Will
2:15
also be talking with Casey sachs now further on the show before in her role
2:19
as president of Bridge Valley. But she also wants to add Knawak County board
2:23
member to her resume. We're talking to herless Ashley Dean candidate for judge here
2:25
in Kanawah Counties on the show as his deb Rusnick, who's a candidate for
2:30
Prosecuting Attorney Kanahak County. But before we get to all that, midafternoon on
2:34
Friday, came to word the longtime knaw County Commissioner Kent Carper had resigned,
2:38
effective immediately Friday from his post. Now we've all heard, we've discussed on
2:43
the show in the past, the allegations against Commissioner Carper. One year ago
2:46
this month, he was accused of exposing himself in the middle of the day
2:50
of Daniel boom Park further alleged that he offered the significant other of the police
2:54
officer who investigated the claim a job within county government. It appears now based
3:00
on the statement it was issued by the guest prosecuting Attorney David Wanley, who
3:04
was brought in as a special prosecutor on the case, that there will be
3:07
no charges filed, the same basic cent of it from the office of US
3:12
Attorney of the Southern District, Will Thompson. Now, the question is now,
3:15
though, what happens to the Carper candidacy. To the surprise of a
3:21
lot of folks, Commissioner Carper did file to run for reelection, and there
3:24
have now been ten days of early voting, and no doubt there were votes
3:28
cast for Kent Carper, and surely they're going to be more cast tomorrow.
3:32
He does have opposition in the primary, the former of former Secretary of State
3:37
Natalie Tenant. So again the question is what happens next. I want to
3:39
bring in Deep Cursey. Mister Kursey is the legal council for the Western Union
3:44
Secretary of State's office. It joins us. Now, Deep, good morning,
3:46
Welcome to the show. Morn to Dave, thanks for having me,
3:49
Thank you for being here. So we'll get right to it. What happens,
3:52
Obviously, Kent Carper's name will remain on the ballot tomorrow. It was
3:54
on the ballot for the rest of Friday, after his resignation, during early
3:59
voting, and for the final day of early voting on Saturday. Polls open
4:01
at six point thirty am tomorrow morning. Commissioner Carper will remain on the ballot.
4:05
So basically, Deeke, what happens next, Well, we have an
4:10
election tomorrow. Indeed we do. That's right, because his name is still
4:15
on the ballot, voters can vote for him, and if he wins the
4:18
race, he is the nominee for the Democratic Party. Okay, So but
4:25
he's not going to run, and I can tell you, I mean,
4:29
well, he's already running, but he's not going to serve. He's already
4:30
announced his resignation. So what happens. What's the process like, Well,
4:36
if he decides not to run at the general election, he's got to make
4:40
that decision after the election is certified. So, assuming it's all remained the
4:44
same, in a couple of weeks, we could have a withdrawal for him
4:47
filed by any candidate. But if it's mister Carper in that case, he
4:53
files withdrawal and that creates a vacancy and nomination on the ballot from there,
4:58
code actually provides it the county executive committee for that political party would nominate the
5:04
individual to run in the general election for that seat. Okay, so Natalie
5:11
Tenant is the former Secretary of State. She's the only other Democrat that I'm
5:15
aware of that is running for that position. So if if Natalie Tenant gets
5:19
more votes tomorrow than Kent Carper on the Democratic ticket, that's all. It's
5:24
all the moot point, right, Yeah, exactly. If some other candidate
5:29
wins the denomination, then that's the candidate. Well, and mister Carper served
5:32
for quite a while in that role, And I was out at about on
5:35
Saturday, and there's still I didn't see a whole lot of KMP Carper signs
5:39
being taken down. So there and there will be people that will still vote
5:43
for him. And I know you're not in on this. I just wanted
5:46
to get you on to talk about the election aspect of it. But this
5:50
is not unprecedented, deca. I mean, because this is situation similar to
5:54
this have happened before. Oh yeah. We have candidates withdrawal from the general
5:58
election every election for various reasons. Someone might move out a state, mo
6:01
about a district, personal reasons, choose not to run, health reasons.
6:06
There's all sorts of reasons candidates withdraw The process for filling the vacancy and nomination
6:12
varies a bit between the different offices. But normally a county inxecutive committee's involved,
6:17
or there's a special candidate filing period. But here for county commission,
6:23
it is just simply the county executive committee would make the nomination to the ballot.
6:26
All right, all right, Deacon's complicated stuff, but I knew you're
6:30
the guy that knows about it. I appreciate you being here trying to clear
6:31
it up for us. Man. We'll see what happens. Thanks a lot,
6:33
Yeah, glad to help. Good talking to you, David as well,
6:36
Deep Cursey again for the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office. Nine thirteen
6:40
of Dave Allen showing five any line Bright to you, parted by Morgan to
6:43
Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. The current mayor of Saint Albans Scott
6:47
James joins us now to the part of Marstore studio. Mister Mayor, good
6:49
morning, Welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave, thank you for
6:53
having me on. How many terms have you served as mayor? Two so
6:57
far and going for three three? Why do you want to continue to be
7:00
the mayor of Saint Albans. Well with the progress that we've made in Saint
7:04
Albans, we've put Saint Alban's back on the map. I mean when in
7:09
twenty twenty three you listed in the Forbes Trip Advisors one of the top fifty
7:14
places to visit worldwide. Good things are happening and we want to continue that.
7:19
And we still have more work to do. So I want to keep
7:25
moving Saint Albans forward and make it even a better community than it is right
7:31
now. Talk about some of the things, Mayor that you're particularly proud of
7:34
during your first couple of terms as mayor. Well, there's several, but
7:40
you know, we got the new police station built. They went from an
7:43
eleven hundred square foot police station to a sixteen five hundred square foot state of
7:49
the art police station. The boat dock over at roadside got built for about
7:58
forty three dilapidated structures have been torn down, including the old Saint Albans Junior
8:05
high which was an isore in our community for thirty two years. Another one
8:11
I'm very proud of is in six years we increased being O tax collections by
8:16
over a million dollars and in a community of our size, that's that's pretty
8:22
big talk with Scott James again, two term mayor of the City of Saint
8:26
Albans, who wants to be re elected come election day tomorrow. So look,
8:31
we don't put the cart before the horse, and I know it's kind
8:33
of bad juju, you know, to talk about what you want to do,
8:35
But if you are elected, if the voters choose you for a third
8:39
term, what do you want to work on next. Well, one of
8:41
the big things that we're going to work on on the water and suicide is
8:46
we have created a priority list of projects that need to be done. You
8:52
know, we're like every other community in the United States. Our infrastructure is
8:58
old, it's out dated. Sometimes we're just putting band aids on it.
9:03
So we're going to have to replace a lot of the infrastructure, the water,
9:09
the sewer lines, things like that. In Saint Albans to bring them
9:13
up to modern day standards. We want to continue the economic growth in St.
9:18
Albans, all right. We want to continue bringing people to our community,
9:24
not only to visit, but to live when people get here. Because
9:31
of the fact that we've torn down a lot of dilapidated structures and we've got
9:35
another list. We got another grant from Deep this year, so there's more
9:39
coming down. I want to say that anybody that's got dilapidated property near them
9:48
and they're concerned about it, called the Building Department and see if it's on
9:52
the list. We want to continue to reduce crime. You know, in
9:58
twenty nineteen and two twenty twenty three, Saint Albans was listed as safe at
10:03
city in West Virginia. Crime has gone down every year in Saint Albans except
10:09
for during COVID. You know, people were kind of on edge there and
10:13
it jumped up a little bit then, but it's back down. But we've
10:18
still got to make more progress in that area. So we just we want
10:24
to continue doing the things that we've done to make Saint Albans what it is
10:31
today versus where it was when we took office. And I will say this
10:35
to somebody. I do spend some time in Saint Alvens, actually down there
10:37
last Monday night for a Saint Albans Chamber event, and there does seem to
10:41
be a vibe in Saint Albans, especially like in the downtown areas. I
10:45
mean, you've got restaurants and coffee shops and things of that nature a lot
10:48
more than they're what there used to be there. But it really is,
10:52
you know on old main loan narrat empty buildings when it took office. We
10:54
have one now. But you know, we're fortunate with you know, the
11:00
established businesses, but also these young entrepreneurs that have taken a chance and it's
11:05
paid off not only for them but for the city of Saint Albans. And
11:09
Dave again, I had to reinvent. I thought when I got in office,
11:15
I was gonna call Cheddars or I was gonna call one of these chains
11:16
and they would come to Saint Albans. Well, they look at logistics,
11:22
interstate access, traffic camp things like that, and so I had to start
11:26
doing things to bring people to Saint Albans. And once they come, they
11:31
keep coming back. You can see that in the evenings down there on Old
11:37
Maine. You know it's packed. You can't hardly find a parking spot.
11:39
Where can people learn more about your campaign? Got a Facebook or yeah,
11:43
Mayor Scott James facebook page. We don't have a website. We've got a
11:48
Mayor Scott James Facebook page. And you know, Dave, this election comes
11:54
down to substance versus negativity. This has been a very very very very negative
12:01
race. I have stayed above the fray. My wife, I was typing
12:07
on it many times. My wife said, do not respond, so I
12:11
had to raise it and go from there. But it's personal attacks. You
12:16
know, tell the people with Saint Albans what you're going to do to make
12:20
Saint Albans a better place. Don't attack me personally. Don't that affects me,
12:24
my family and everything else. All right, again, I've stayed above
12:30
the fray to this point. I hope to continue to do so. But
12:35
if people step back, I don't care if you like me or not.
12:39
Step back and objectively look at where Saint Albans was July one, twenty seventeen
12:45
and where it is today. You can't argue with the progress and the success
12:48
our administration has had. And when I say our administration. It's not just
12:54
me, city council, employees, volunteers. That's what makes a community a
12:58
great community. Give me thirty seconds watching someone vote to keep Scott James,
13:03
mayor of Saint Albans. Let's keep Saint Albans moving forward. If you want
13:11
Saint Albans can continue to grow and be a player in West Virginia and be
13:16
a community that you can be proud of. A right vote Scott James number
13:22
five on the ballot tomorrow to keep this progress moving forward. Mayor Scott James,

Saint Albans is on the move. According to a Texter, I think there
17:41
may be like one hundred and twenty seven people running for Knaw County Board of
17:45

17:48
you know her as President of Bridge Valley, but she also wants to

17:55

17:57
It's nice to be here with you today. Thank you for joining us now

18:04
But just like I do with all candidates, for those who may not
18:07
know you, give us a bio on doctor Casey Sachs. You bet so.
18:11
I was working as the vice chancellor for the Community and Technical College system
18:15
here in West Virginia and I got invited to come to DC where I worked
18:18
at the United States Department of Education with Career and Technical education. So that
18:23
serves K twelve and Higher ED helping students get the skills they need to enter
18:27
the workforce. We also my office also handled prison education, adult education,
18:33
and community colleges. So I did that until January of twenty one when I
18:37
came back to West Virginia. Worked again with the High Red Policy Commission for
18:41
a couple of months before starting as the president here at Bridge Valley. So
18:45
now, with all of that, why do you want to serve on the
18:48
board of Education in Kanawha County. So after I came back to West Virginia,
18:52
I came back knowing so much more about what other states did and what
18:56
was possible, and I just saw that there were a lot of partnership and
19:00
ways that we could align the K twelve system with the Higher ED system.
19:03
I come in with a lot of expertise in school school finance and recognize that
19:08
we just need a lot more partnerships to leverage some of the resources that exist
19:11
to make our schools better. We just can't keep doing the same thing and
19:15
expecting different results. And so I decided you can't just complain about something.
19:19
If you want to change it, you have to get involved, which is
19:22
why I started to run Talk with doctor Casey Sachs again, who's a candidate
19:26

19:41
obvious elephant in the room is is this a conflict of interest with you being
19:45
the president of one of the leading institutions of higher learning in the state now
19:48
wanting to serve on a public board of education. I love that you asked,
19:52
and I really loved how you asked it. Thanks Dave. We think
19:56
for one of the best institutions of higher education in the state too, here
19:59
at Bridgeville. So I actually I asked the Ethics Commission because that was a
20:03
concern that I know that some of my staff also shared that. It was
20:07
like, well, is this a conflict of interest? So we got a
20:11
ruling from the Ethics Commission and you can read it on their website or on
20:15
my website. But the short answers know that they ruled that it is not
20:19
a conflict of interest that there are not decisions that I could make on the
20:23
Kannaw County Board of Education that would impact my work, either as a college
20:27
president or as a person who's running a charter school in the county. I
20:30
asked for both. Are you Are you concerned about the time crunch? You
20:36
know, it's two meetings a month, so in terms of the actual time
20:40
commitment, we're talking about meetings, which I'm for sure an expert at.
20:45
But I think the alignment is really great with the college and with the expertise
20:49
that I already have in education. I know my husband's a little bit worried
20:52
about the time crunch because he recognizes it means it's a lot more stuff that
20:56
I'll be reading at night. But I'm just really excited about the opportunity.
21:00
There's so many things we can do to help make our schools better. How's
21:03
a campaign been so far? And when you're out and about, whether you're
21:07
door knocking or you're just talking to people to forums or so on and so
21:11
forth, what do you hear from the public. People have been incredibly supportive,
21:17
and one of the nicest compliments I got from somebody recently was I'm voting
21:21
for you because I'm shocked by how many really different people have told me they
21:26
like you. I think that's one of the features of my campaign that I
21:30
am a Republican. That's not a big secret to anybody. I worked at
21:34
the United States Department of Education in a Republican administration, and so people know
21:40
that largely about me. But what I've been really honored by is how many
21:45
of my Democrat friends have also said, oh, no, you're absolutely the
21:48
best choice, and we were really excited to vote for you. It's been
21:52
such an honor, and people have been incredibly warm and incredibly inviting. With
21:56
all this experience that you have, not only certain Bridge Valley, but all
22:00
these other things that you've done in your life, what how do you think
22:03
that helps you if you're elected to the Board of Education. What will you
22:06
bring to the table based on your experiences, not the things that you've done
22:10
in your life. I think it really helps me understand how we can make
22:14
our schools better. So one example, and it's not immediately school related,
22:18
but if if you'll bear with me, I'll connect the dots. As a
22:22
taxpayer, you're paying for two busing systems. You pay for KRT to run
22:26
buses, and you pay for Kannak County schools to run buses. And wouldn't
22:30
it be amazing if, like so many other capital cities, we decided as
22:36
the school district that we were going to partner with KRT and ask KRT to
22:40
start running our school buses. It would let us have better routes, it
22:42
would let us pay bus drivers more. It would allow families to say,
22:47
Gosh, I live in Montgomery, but I really want my kid to go
22:48
to GW High School for one reason or another. You could go to any
22:52
of the schools in the entire district if you had meaningful transportation to get you
22:56
there. Right now, while we have open enrollment across the district, it's
23:00
unrealistic for a family that lives in Poka to be able to make a different
23:04
decision besides going to Poka High School. And if that's what they want,
23:07
that's amazing. But if it's not what they want, if there isn't a
23:11
program there, or their kids not getting along there, or it's just not
23:15
working out for whatever reason, if you don't have real transportation, that that's
23:19
your only option. And so by partnering with Kart, we really could do
23:25
something. I mean, we wouldn't. This isn't groundbreaking. It's not like
23:26
other capital cities don't already do this, but it would be really new for
23:30
us, and it would let us make some really meaningful changes in both the
23:33
amount of money that we can pay our bus drivers and the way that we
23:37
allow families to access schools. Do you have a website or social media that

32:00
good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning, thank you for having
32:04

32:07
You know, I'm really tremendously proud of the campaign that we've run here.
32:09
So so why are you running well? I'm running because I believe that
32:14
Kanawk County can do better. I truly believe that we can run a more
32:17
efficient courthouse. I believe that that we need a judge who's tougher, but
32:21
you know, obviously very fair on crime. And I believe that you know
32:25
that the citizens of Kanall County they want to see a change. I knew
32:29
that before I filed to run, and I see it every day as I'm
32:30
talking to voters. What do voters tell you when you're out? I mean,
32:34
I know you've been out on the campaign trail. I've seen you on
32:36
social media, and you've been to various you know, meet the candidates forums,
32:40
and you're going door to door. What do you hear from voters?
32:44
Well, I'm you know, I'm really proud. We've we made the decision
32:45
to run a multifaceted campaign, really not kind of throwing all of our eggs
32:49
in one basket. We've done a you know, a social media, television,
32:52
direct mail, but really what I'm most proud of is our grassroots effort.
32:57
As of today, I have two hundred and forty seven and more doors
33:00
to knock on to reach our goal of ten thousand and So in those ten
33:04
thousand doors, I've heard obviously, I've met all kinds of different people.
33:07
I've heard different complaints, different concerns that they have. Most people have never
33:10
met a judicial candidate or a judge when I knock on their doors. So
33:14
you know, we try to take this campaign to the people rather than trying
33:17
to bring them to us. And so I think they appreciate that, you
33:21
know. I also I think that they are concerned about crime in their communities.
33:24
They're concerned about you know, some people have had to go to the
33:27
courthouse. Lots of people haven't, but some people have, and when they
33:30
have, you know, they want to feel like they've had a fair shake,
33:34
and sometimes that isn't the experience that they've walked away with. You've been
33:37
on the show before. But give us your background, the bio, and
33:40
what qualifies you to be a judge? Saron Konnaccount. Sure. Well,
33:44
I'm an attorney. I worked as a law clerk to then Chief Justice Beth
33:47
Walker. I worked in private private practice at a product's liability defense her firm
33:52
here in town called Thomas, Colembs and Span. I helped set up the
33:55
new Intermediate Court of Appeals where I currently work today. Conservative, I'm endorsed
34:00
by the West Virginia Republican Party. Law enforcement, job creators, healthcare providers
34:05
and leaders from all across the state, and really most importantly, I was
34:08
born and rased here in Kannak County. I'm an eighth generation West Virginia,
34:12
and I currently live in South Charleston with my family, and so I want
34:15
to bring my kind of unique experience in the appellate courts also in private practice.
34:20
I want to bring that to the Kannak County Court House, Ashley.
34:22
I've noticed that there are several several people that are running for various positions,
34:29
whether it's judge or board of education, not only here but in other areas.
34:31
So I live on Putnam County, I've seen it over there that feel
34:34
the need, even though it is a non partisan position, they feel a
34:37
need to explain to people that, Hey, I am a Republican or I'm
34:40
a conservative. Why is that important to you? It's really important, and
34:44
I'll tell you and I knock on doors. That's the first question people ask
34:46
me. It's important to them. They want to know sort of ideologically,
34:50
where the candidates stand. You know, I'll say that I am a conservative.
34:54
It is a non partisan race, but I make no bones about being
34:58
a conservative. And to me, that means I don't send two different mailers
35:02
to Democrats and Republicans. I send the same thing. And you know,
35:06
I think it's just important that people understand sort of where where they're elected officials
35:09
come from ideologically. And you know, with all that being said, a
35:15
judge can be a conservative and still be fair and still apply the law fairly
35:19
to everyone who comes before them. And that's exactly what I'm going to do
35:22
talking with Ashley Dean began as a candidate for circuit judge here in Kanawha County.
35:24
And I say that because I've had candidates, let's say, for magistrate
35:28
on the show before, and if I didn't ask them what their party was,
35:30
invariably I get a text from somebody saying you didn't ask them what their
35:34
party was because it is important. Like it or not, it is important.
35:37
It's kind of where we are politically right now. It is, and
35:39
you know, the judicial canon sort of govern what you can and can't say
35:43
about your belief system and your party and that sort of thing. But people
35:46
sort of feel, and I see this on Facebook comments and things like that
35:50
on my post. If you don't sort of lead with that, people think
35:52
you're trying to hide the ball from or hide something from them. And so
35:54
I've just tried to be outfront about it, open about it, and you
35:59
know, I think that candidates either lean into it. And you know,
36:01
West Virginia right now is a conservative state, and so I think, you
36:05
know, you see, whether it's judicial candidates like my opponent's sort of switching
36:07
parties from Democrat to independent and then saying, well, let's not play politics
36:12
in the courtroom. You know, it's no longer convenient that sort of thing.
36:15
That's really not the approach I've taken. I've just sort of went with
36:16
it, and I am who I am, and I'll be fair to everybody
36:20
who comes before me. The Dave Allen showing five aday line bright to you

36:57
what do you see is the biggest issues facing the court system here County
37:00
Ashley? I think we have an efficiency problem. We need to really get
37:04
in turn these cases around quicker. That helps with public perception of the courts
37:07
and feeling like they're getting a fair shaken court. And I really have some
37:12
big ideas that I want to bring as far as transparency to the courthouse.
37:15
I think that we can definitely whether it's you know, your everyday person walking
37:20
in requesting documents, like that process needs to be better. Now we have
37:22
E filing in Kanag County, so that's obviously going to go a long way
37:25
in the transparency perspective. But you know, I think I think that's a
37:29
big issue, and I think that people don't have confidence right now a lot
37:32
of times when they're about to walk into that courthouse. And I want to
37:35
help resolve that issue. You have a website or social media or somewhere where

37:51
care about the people of Kanaw County. I'm going to be a judge who's
37:53
tough but fair. As a conservative, I'll always uphold the constitution, respect
37:58
the rule of law, and I'll never legislate from the bench. I really
38:01
enjoy the administrative side also of operating a court as well, which I've been
38:06
doing, and like I said, I have big, big ideas for bringing
38:08
some additional transparency to the county courthouse. I feel that I'm in the prime
38:13
of my career and I'm going to be the hardest working judge you've ever seen.

42:21
text three zero four nine three five five zero zero. A text says if
42:25
KNT Carper wins, does that mean to automatically go to Natalie Tenant. No,
42:31
it doesn't. We explained it a little bit earlier. Dec It's very
42:34
complicated, very even as somebody who worked in the Secretary of State's Office,
42:37
as I did, it is a very complicated process. We're going to get
42:40
into it a little bit further next hour on talk line. Will Thompson,
42:45
who is the US Attorney for the Southern District's going to join Hoppy top of
42:49
the show. Then I'm going to come back at ten forty five. So
42:52
basically, in case you missed the interview with Deep Currency, if Natalie Tenant,
42:55
who is the other Democrat run for County commission Natalie Tenant wins, you
42:59
know that that's it. But there's still I mean, she would not take
43:02
office. If she wins, well, she still got well, let me
43:06
back up, she'd have to go through the general election in November. But
43:09
there still has to be a new county commissioner. So basically, the Democratic
43:15
Executive Committee will will choose someone. The County commission then gets involved, So
43:20
there's going to be another county commissioner. If this makes any sense at all
43:22
what I'm trying to say, because somebody has to finish out the term of
43:28
Cant Carper, and it can't be Natalie Tennant at this point because even because
43:32
if she comes in second to can't Carper and KNT Carper's name will still be
43:36
on the ballot tomorrow. If she comes in second place, well then she
43:39
didn't win, and then somebody is going to have to fulfill the rest of
43:44
the term. So a whole lot to be worked out between now and then.

44:12
prosecuting an attorney in this primary election here Conon County. Debrusnik would like to
44:16
hold that office as Joine is now. Deborah, good morning, welcome to
44:19
the show. Good morning, Dave, thanks for having me. So how's
44:21
the campaign been so far? It's been interesting, it has It's been quite
44:25
the journey, but I'll say I have continued to focus on my campaign,
44:30
my race, what I'm doing, and getting my name out to the public
44:35
to let everyone know that I am the most qualified candidate for prosecuting attorny in
44:37
Kennon County. I know we try to say above the phrase, especially on
44:40
the judicial races here, and it's very important that we try to do that.
44:45
But I don't think anyone would disagree with the fact that it's been a
44:50
nasty campaign. It certainly has. I again have decided rather than engage in
44:57
any social media bickering or any childish banter, I will again take the high
45:04
road. I will focus on my campaign. I will focus on my experience
45:07
and what I have to bring to the office, and I'm going to keep
45:10
moving forward. I want to talk about your experience that you mentioned there in
45:15
the intro. Talk about your experience, so experience matters, especially in this
45:20
situation. Last week I obtained the number of felony cases that I have handled
45:25
as lead counsel in the Prosecutor's office compared to the number of cases that my
45:30
opponent has had. And that's first chair felony cases. That means taking the
45:37
lead my name is the number one first name on the case. I am
45:40
responsible for what happens. That number for me was three hundred and sixty cases.
45:47
The number my opponent has had in the same type of search was seventeen.
45:55
That speaks volumes as to not only the experience I have in the courtroom,
46:00
but the experience I have in the office. And you know, we
46:04
start each case with the highest burden in the justice system, and that's beyond
46:08
a reasonable doubt, and we carry that burden throughout the entire case, and
46:15
oftentimes we are forced to go to trial on cases and reach that burden.
46:20
And I've done so time and time again. It's a hard burden to reach
46:23
without a clear understanding of the law and the rules. And I think my
46:28
experience I have mentioned three hundred and sixty cases, That's not the number of
46:31
cases I've been involved in, and that's the number of cases I've been lead
46:34
counsel on. The number of cases that I've worked alongside other attorneys in my
46:37
office, I couldn't begin to count. Let's talk about your You, the
46:44
person, your bio. Give us a little bio on deb Resty. So
46:45
I'm forty one years old, I have a twenty five year old daughter,
46:49
a twenty six year old step son. My husband, Jason, and I
46:51
have been together for close to seventeen years. I was born and raised in
46:55
Kannak County. I was raised by Christian parents. My dad worked at DuPont
47:00
retired from DuPont. My mom was a homemaker. So I come from humble
47:05
beginnings. I don't come from a family of attorneys or a bunch of money.
47:08
I've worked for everything I've ever had, and I know how to put
47:13
forth the effort that it takes to succeed. What do you see as the
47:17
biggest issues in the office, and if you are elected, how do you
47:22
hope to go about fixing what you see as issues in the office. There
47:24
are certain different issues that I see. Largely, I see a staffing issue.
47:30
We do not have a full staff of attorneys or support staff, and
47:36
that's a goal, A priority that needs to be addressed is getting not only
47:42
just any attorney or any member of the support staff, but qualified people.
47:45
People who can come in, who are not afraid to try cases, and
47:50
who have a good solid understanding of the criminal justice system and criminal law,
47:54
and so to be able to staff an office with those types of people is
48:00
important. I also see some issues with people being released on low bonds.
48:07
I'm not saying that we should do away with pr bonds or low bonds entirely,
48:12
but they should be researched for certain crimes where they are they're not crimes
48:15
of violence. We should not have violent offenders being released on low bonds getting
48:22
back out reoffending while they're supposed to be on bond if we set that bond
48:27
high enough in the first instance, and it is unlikely that they will reoffend
48:31
while they're on bond. What's the biggest misconception about the prosecuting Attorney's office.
48:37
I mean, you've been you've been around, and there are those of us
48:39
in the public, myself included, that you may have some misconceptions about the
48:44
office. What are some of the biggest misconceptions by the prosecuting Attorney's office?
48:46
The way our judicial system is set up, so there are a few different
48:50
things. I think a huge misconception is that our office isn't out here trying
48:54
cases. We're not handling cases. The number of cases that come through that
49:00
office it would astound most members of the public. And to be able to
49:06
filter through those cases and pick apart the facts, pick apart the law,
49:10
apply that law to the facts and have a good solid understanding of the case
49:15
that you have. Is not always an easy thing to do, and of
49:20
course, you know, the public wants everyone to, you know, let's
49:22
put these people in prison. Let's do this. But we have again that
49:25
highest burden in the justice system that we have to meet, and to do
49:30
so fairly, justly, and to do it right is not always an easy
49:37
task. But our office is succeeding in doing so. And if you look
49:42
at the numbers, the numbers of convictions that we have, the numbers of
49:45
violent offenders that we have been keeping off of the streets. Again, I
49:49
think members of the public would be astounded. You have a website or social
49:52
media people can learn more about you. I do. My website is www
49:57
dot Deborah Russneck and that's dB r us Nak dot com. I have a
50:04
Facebook page that's deb Usnak for knock Aunty Prosecutor on Facebook and there's a lot
50:12
of information out there about me. I again really would ask members of the
50:15
public reach out to your candidates. Get to know your candidates, know their
50:21
background, know their history, know their experience, because yes, I'm in
50:27
the office now and it allows me a unique insight compared to other people,
50:32
because I am able to see the areas in which the office is succeeding in
50:37
the areas in which we need improvement, and to be able to identify that
50:42
and understand how to fix the areas that need improvement without negatively affecting the areas
50:49
where we're already succeeding is going to be very important in this next election,
50:53
because you're going to have to have someone that's able to do that, and
50:58
I believe that I am that person. Give me the thirty Why should someone
51:01
vote for Debora Rusnik for Prosecuting Attorney Kanawha County Because I am experienced. I
51:07
have a solid understanding of not only the law, but the inner workings of
51:13
the office. The Kanawh County Prosecutor's Office is an office that has over fifty
51:17
employees, and we need someone that is not just able to run that office,
51:23
but to be the leader that the office needs and the leader that the
51:27
people in that office want to follow. And I am that person. Appreciate
51:30
you being here, thank you for having me to Thanks a lot, Debora
51:32
Rusnik. And I've just realized I've probably been pronouncing your last name wrong.
51:37
This whole time because I've just said Russnik and it's you prefer Rusnik. It's
51:40
you know what, who cares? Just Dad, It's just I'm just Ab.
51:45
I'm just you know, like everyone else. Yes, my last name
51:47
is weird. Sorry, let's it's all good. Anybody can say it however
51:52
they want to. I'm okay with that, all right, long as they
51:53
vote for you to Mark, that's right, that's right. Get out there
51:57
and vote, call or whatever color George if you want to vote for all
51:59
right, all right, Devra, I appreciate you being here. Thanks a
52:00
lot, best of luck with the campaign or the next twenty four hours or
52:05
so. All right, thanks a lot, denber Rosneck again, all right,
