- Lucas: Hey everyone. Welcome back to Learn Swedish with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and I am so happy we are doing this one together. Luna: And I am Luna. We have been shopping a lot lately, haven't we? Laptops, mattresses, lamps... Lucas: We have. But today feels different. Today is about nature. Or at least, indoor nature. Luna: Oh yes. Plants. I love plants. But I always get nervous asking questions in Swedish. What if I kill it immediately? Lucas: You will not kill it. Not with these phrases. We are going to the plant shop. The first step is simply stating what you want. Luna: Okay. How do I say 'I would like to have a plant'? Lucas: Here it is. Listen closely. Jag skulle vilja ha en växt. Luna: Jag skulle vilja ha en växt. Lucas: Perfect. Let's break that down. Jag means I. Skulle vilja is a polite way to say would like. Ha means to have. And Växt is plant. Luna: So, 'I would like to have a plant.' It sounds very polite. Lucas: It is very standard. You can use it anywhere. Let's try it again. Jag skulle vilja ha en växt. Luna: Jag skulle vilja ha en växt. Okay, I feel ready. Lucas: Good. Now, imagine you are standing in front of a beautiful fern. You want to know how to keep it alive. Luna: Yes! That is my biggest fear. Asking 'What does it need?' in Swedish. Lucas: This phrase is a bit longer, but very useful. Vad krävs för att den ska trivas? Luna: Vad krävs för att den ska trivas? Lucas: Slowly. Vad... krävs... för att... den... ska... trivas? Luna: Vad krävs för att den ska trivas? Lucas: Exactly. Vad means what. Krävs means is required or needed. För att means for. Den ska trivas means it should thrive or do well. Luna: So, 'What is required for it to thrive?' That is much better than just asking 'How to water?' Lucas: It shows you care. Let's repeat it. Vad krävs för att den ska trivas? Luna: Vad krävs för att den ska trivas. Got it. Lucas: Now, here is a practical question. Many plants come in plastic nursery pots. You might want something nicer. Luna: Oh, yes. I hate plastic pots. They look cheap. Lucas: So you ask: Finns den med kruka? Luna: Finns den med kruka? Lucas: Let's parse that. Finns means exists or is there. Den means it. Med means with. Kruka means pot or vase. Luna: Is it with a pot? Simple. Effective. Lucas: Very effective. Try it one more time. Finns den med kruka? Luna: Finns den med kruka. I can already see the shelf in my living room. Lucas: I can too. But let's be honest about the price. Sometimes Swedish plants are expensive. Luna: They are. Especially the rare ones. I need to complain a little bit. Lucas: Right. So you say: Den är lite dyr. Luna: Den är lite dyr. Lucas: Den is it. Är is is. Lite means a little. Dyr means expensive. So, 'It is a little expensive.' Luna: Den är lite dyr. It is a soft complaint. Very Swedish. Lucas: It is polite. You are not shouting. You are just observing. Let's say it together. Den är lite dyr. Luna: Den är lite dyr. Okay, I am ready to buy it now. Lucas: Finally. You have asked about the plant, the care, the pot, and the price. Now you close the deal. Luna: How do I say I take it? Lucas: This is the classic closing phrase. Jag tar den här, tack. Luna: Jag tar den här, tack. Lucas: Jag means I. Tar means take. Den här means this one. Tack means thank you. Luna: I take this one, thanks. Perfect. Lucas: Repeat it slowly. Jag tar den här, tack. Luna: Jag tar den här, tack. Lucas: And once more, with feeling. Jag tar den här, tack. Luna: Jag tar den här, tack. I feel so accomplished. Lucas: Let's review the whole scene quickly. You walk in. Jag skulle vilja ha en växt. Luna: Jag skulle vilja ha en växt. Then you ask about care. Vad krävs för att den ska trivas? Lucas: Vad krävs för att den ska trivas. You check for a pot. Finns den med kruka? Luna: Finns den med kruka. You note the price. Den är lite dyr. Lucas: Den är lite dyr. And you buy it. Jag tar den här, tack. Luna: Jag tar den här, tack. That was smooth. Lucas: It was. And remember, practice makes perfect. Say these out loud while you water your own plants. Luna: I will. I have a cactus. It does not need much water. So maybe Jag skulle vilja ha en kaktus next time. Lucas: That works too.
