Andrew Van Lewen. speaker-1: Hello former, what a weekend in sport. Just in general. Like speaker-0: Everyone's everyone's a soccer expert. speaker-1: Yeah. It was great. It was ⁓ it was unreal. Did the ⁓ what a and the Tigs had a win, did they? speaker-0: No, we got the bye. I mean it's no, no, we did win. We be we won our last ever game at Lycard for the next two years. So yeah, no, we we did. Sorry. ⁓ yeah. ⁓ wasn't the most convincing, I'm not gonna lie, against a pretty underwhelming Gold Coast side. But anyway, you take a win when you can get ⁓ at the moment and ⁓ that'll do us nicely. on the weekend, did you have a look at the G Ts at Queensland Raceway? Because history was made, ABL. Yeah. ⁓ speaker-1: No us. speaker-0: Renee Gracie took her first outright victory in GT World Championship Australia, dominating ⁓ race one with co-driver Will Davison. ⁓ that goes with her maiden pro am win, and alongside her amateur win and her trophy win, meaning she's won in all three classes in GTWCA, which is pretty impressive really. All jokes aside, and let's face it, there's plenty of jokes to be made. I mean, it was just good to have Renee on the TV and not have to worry about my missus walking in. That's speaker-1: So yeah, that's fair enough. I actually didn't see much of what was happening at Queensland Raceway, but obviously that was a ⁓ that was pretty big news, as you say, history making result there and and great for Renee, who, you know, like it's it's great to see someone come back to the sport. You know, she obviously, you know, when she left the sport it wasn't a happy relationship with motor racing and to see her come back and and be really enjoying it and flourishing in it is fantastic. And great for Dave O as well, because you know, like ⁓ It's just hard not to be happy for that bloke when he's out there getting the job done. ⁓ given how everything played out, you know, at the end of last season and the way his full time supercar's career came to that sort of abrupt end. So, you know, he's talked a lot this year about how he's enjoyed doing all these different things, you know, like racing Trans Am in New Zealand and all this sort of stuff. And ⁓ yeah, getting to ⁓ to collect some trophies along the way, I reckon's he'd be feeling pretty good about life. speaker-0: Yeah. The other race on Sunday w went to Brendan Leach and Sergio Perez. ⁓ but maybe the biggest thing to come out of the entire weekend was when Tony Quinn let it slip on the weekend on TV that a track extension is happening at Queensland Raceway from around turn two. Now he didn't say much more than that, although SpeakFA understands the new layout is expected to extend the circuit to a total of twelve corners and add elevation to an otherwise pretty flat venue. ⁓ and track works are expected to happen in mid to late December. I mean, this is good. This is great. speaker-1: It is. I I don't know, th the it's such a sort of maligned layout QR for being boring and all this sort of stuff. But like it is a spectator's absolute dream and it does generally create good racing. Like that sort of turn one to two fast corners into a slow corner, that's literally the recipe for overtaking. Like that's how you like, you know, a fast corner, a long straight and then a r and a stop corner. That's ⁓ that is the perfect recipe for passing. So You know, I hope we don't lose that, but yeah, it's obviously been the butt of many jokes ⁓ over the years how simple the layout is. There's no elevation, it is flat, it is ⁓ it is all of those things. But you do get to see a a heck of a lot of cars going around if you're there watching up on the hill. So yeah, it'll be interesting to see ⁓ to see what Q R ⁓ sorry, what TQ has up his sleeve for QR ⁓ with these extensions. speaker-0: ⁓ the other thing that happened of of large note is ⁓ Formula One from Catalonia, AVL now qualifying on Saturday. well the the Hall monitor George Russell basically dominated. He dominated Friday and then a lot of Saturday. He took his third pole position of the year ⁓ in front of Lewis Hamilton. That's right, Lewis Hamilton, ⁓ who prevented a Mercedes front row lockout ⁓ by stealing second from Kimi Antonelli on his final lap of qualifying. He came after Hamilton's Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, ended his session in the wall for not for the first time. In fact I think that's about third the third crash in in as many weeks. Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah, well it was a second crash within a week, basically. speaker-0: After he actually looked faster of the two Ferraris, so that was probably pretty disappointing for him, but more disappointment probably was gonna come the next day 'cause Lewis Hamilton won his first Grand Prix for Ferrari and became the oldest Grand Prix winner since nineteen seventy. It's easy to forget that Lewis is actually the last living race driver that raced against Yemen Well Fangio ABL ⁓ in the sixties. So ⁓ it was an all British podium for the first time in nineteen sixty eight. So you can imagine now the state of the sky or find commentary box at the end of that. George Russell inherited second and Blando Norris grabbed third after a late retirement to Kimmy Antonelli, who just took second place from his teammate. ⁓ in a sign of the the type of kid that Kimmy Antonelli is, he was pictured given a celebratory hug to Lewis immediately after race, that's only ten minutes after he was DNF'd, which is I mean hell of some sportsmanship there. Max picked up a largely anonymous fourth and Oscar grabbed fifth after Charles Leclerc also parked it with a handful of laps left. ⁓ didn't amount to much of a race, not gonna lie. speaker-1: You don't reckon? I thought it was a good race. I ⁓ it was it was ⁓ I mean for a Spanish well no sorry, it wasn't a Spanish Grand Prix, it was a Barcelona Grand Prix, 'cause the Spanish Grand Prix is in Madrid. But I actually really thought it was for a Barcelona race quite ⁓ interesting. I was doing live updates for for Speed Cafe for the race, so I was paying reasonably close attention to it. It was ⁓ probably what the the shame of the race is is that like it was a blockbuster result, right? Like whatever you think of Lewis Hamilton, like a strong Lewis Hamilton and a strong Ferrari. They're good things for Formula One. So and we've kind of got over that period of where Lewis dominated and it became really boring. So it's interesting to see Lewis win, which is which is a really cool thing. So blockbuster result on that front. What was kind of a shame is that Ferrari really they went hard on strategy for this race in terms of starting Lewis on the softs, basically committing to a three stop right at the beginning. And man, he was after he took his second stop, he was hunting those mercs down. And he was about to catch them and end up basically, you know, ⁓ on strategy par with them, but he would have been able to run longer ⁓ in that second stint, have better tie condition for the run home. And it was kind of set up for a really fascinating finish because he was on the fastest strategy and he clearly had the fastest race pace. And it would have been really interesting to see how he went about fighting those Mercedes. At the same time, the two Mercedes were kind of squabbling amongst themselves. ⁓ so it's sort of a shame. When the VSC came, it gave Lewis that ⁓ it was just perfectly time. It gave him a massive free kick on that third stop and it sealed the race win for him. I think he was going to win it anyway, but it would have been a lot more exciting to see him have to actually go through and pass those cars. Obviously, that's taken away the fact that Kimmy didn't make the end of the race anyway. ⁓ so it's a bit of a shame the VSC kind of gave him the the free kick he needed to to put the victory beyond doubt, because I reckon it would have been really interesting to see. that final stint had it not, but I also think that he would have still won that race because he was just so fast and Ferrari just had they had a plan and they were letting the Mercedes guys squabble and it was just coming to him beautifully. speaker-0: Yeah. I I was I we'll talk about Kimmy later in the show, but I I think ⁓ George himself was pretty underwhelming, I'm not gonna lie, given that he was on pole position, been dominating all Friday and Saturday. ⁓ and w you spoke about spoke after the race in the Discord and said something that's quite interesting. Now, based off what George had been saying earlier, that he'd would have won titles had he been at Mercedes with Lewis when Lewis was dominating. ⁓ you asked the question, and I I'll tell you what, if Merck could run a three car team right now with George, Kimmy, and Lewis, what would the order be in the current car? And I think it's a lay down Kimmy Lewis, then George probably daylight between Kimmy and Kimmy and ⁓ Lewis at the moment. speaker-1: Yeah, it's i it is something that that did sort of ⁓ pop up in my mind last night 'cause there is always this feeling that George feels that he's sort of hard done by by the timing of his arrival at Mercedes, because he obviously came in up against Lewis Hamilton. But it was as we switched to the ground effect car, and Mercedes didn't quite nail that regulation and the, you know, that he's he's won a few races along the way, but it certainly wasn't the the dominant package that it had been in the pre-Ground Effect era in the pre 2021, ⁓ sorry, pre-2022 ⁓ rule set. So there has always been this sort of sense from George that it was just all bad timing because of the fact that he did beat Lewis. When they were teammates, right? But what we're seeing now, I think, and I think what is quite clear is that those Grand Effect cars just didn't suit Lewis. And yes, that is a, you know, you can chalk that up as a weakness in terms of ⁓ Lewis's overall ability, that there was a generation of car that didn't work for him. But I'll tell you what, watching him go now, I'm just not convinced that had George rocked up, you know, had George come into Mercedes when Valerie Bottas did, I don't know that George goes on a tear of title winning seasons in that time against Lewis. Like I don't know. I I think the ground effect era flattered George against Lewis and has kind of given George this idea that yeah, I would have just beat I would have pasted him and I would have won all the if I'd been in that championship winning car, I would have won those championships. I just didn't have a championship winning car. ⁓ and that does make me think now we're seeing the best of Lewis again. ⁓ you kind of go, Okay, well, yes he won A lot of championships in the fastest car. That's kind of how it works. Like that's not you can't really mark someone down for that. That's just how car racing works, Formula One works. ⁓ and yeah, I think it would be if they could run a three car team, I'm not sure George would be as far ahead of Lewis as he looked throughout the ground effect era with these new cars that do seem to just suit Lewis better. Well significantly better than the ground effect cars did. So speaker-0: Saying that, that's based off a win last night. speaker-1: I think it's based on a on a general upswing and performance from Lewis. I mean he's what was he, second the last couple of races? Like he is going like he's going better. Like he clearly looks more comfortable in this generation of car than he did in the last one. ⁓ and yeah, I just don't think it's as simple as as the fact that George I don't know that George can extrapolate having been quicker than Lewis through that generation of car to I I could have won more championships. I really I think that in this if they were still teammates right now, I don't think George would be finding it all that easy because he's not finding it all that easy against Kimmy Antonelli, you know. And as you said, he was he looked like he was back to his best, George, for most of that weekend, but then sort of got down in the mouth when he felt they pitted him too early at the end of the first stint. And I think they probably did. And then he just like he was just gone from there and Kimmy hauled him, you know, ran him down, passed him, and had his car not broken, he was gonna, you know, finish finish ahead of him. ⁓ so he's made points back on on Kimmy thanks to the DNF, but he's also lost you know, like he's lost out to to Lewis Hamilton as well. So ⁓ yeah, it just wasn't a convincing Sunday performance from George Russell. speaker-0: No, no. It's ⁓ very interesting moving forward from that. ⁓ the other thing too that happened was that McLaren daubed Kimi Antonelli in and actually got him a five second penalty after the race despite him being a DNF. But given that he finished the percentage of the race that he required, I think it's ninety percent, they can add it to his total time, which is strange because there wasn't a total time. He doesn't have to carry that penalty to the next race, which is great. But good old McLaren. No dramas. I mean, yeah, George Russell should look at driving there 'cause that'd be a massive magic fit at the moment. The Hawk monitor dobbing people in and now you've got a team dobbing people in. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah, and speaking of McLaren, it was a pretty tough ⁓ weekend for Oscar Piastri really as well. certainly obviously, you know, Lando ended up on the podium because of of Antonelli's D and F. He didn't, you know, drive his way to the podium, but he was, you know, the f he looked like the sort of fourth or fifth quickest car depending on whether Leclair was hanging out of the wall or not. ⁓ and and yeah, Oscar just couldn't match him. Just never looked like matching him at any point ⁓ during the ⁓ during the weekend, which is ⁓ a little bit troubling to be honest. speaker-0: Shocker. He was nowhere's villain, I'm not gonna lie. ⁓ Max had one of the most anonymous fourth places I reckon I've ever seen in a race. Like I when I looked at the race at the end of it, I said, Who ran fourth? It was Max. It was like I don't even remember seeing him on screen for ⁓ a majority of the race at least. speaker-1: Yeah. And that's with the best engine in the back of the car according to ⁓ the FIA as well. So that's that's amazing. speaker-0: Yeah, that's ⁓ ducks and drakes in itself. Alright, let's go to the shift cut because there is a lot more Formula One news coming out of the Spanish Grand Prix. And we'll start with Mercedes. They're considering legal action after Alpine's successful appeal, which reinstated Pierre Gasly's podium finish from Monaco, following successive five second pit lame penalties. McLaren and Red Bull are ⁓ are also planning to appeal the decision, which came five days after the event. Formula One Stewart's accepted a timing error, reinstated Gasly to third place for the race in Monaco. ⁓ ultimately Formula One are responsible for the time king, admitted to a measurement discrepancy. Geez, that's a technical way of saying we screwed it. ⁓ resulting from pit lane changes and Stewards rescinded Gasly's penalties after a virtual hearing at the Barcelona Grand Prix following Alpine's request for review. Mercedes now wants to get George Russell's penalties from Monaco overturned. This is this'll be extraordinary if they can do this. And their driver to be placed either third or fourth. Russell's entire race was impacted as Mercedes did not observe the penalty correctly, meaning he was then hit with a drive thru penalty, which dropped him from third to thirteenth. Gazzy was adamant on Sunday that he had not been speeding and said he was heartbreaking by the penalties to have a lifelong dream of a Monaco podium taken away from him. As well, Isaac Hadjar now has dropped down to fourth after joining Mercedes winner, Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton on Sunday's podium. ⁓ Piastri is now shuffled back down to fifth. Mate, Dangerous, dangerous territory here. speaker-1: Yeah. I mean, there's a reason why in race penalties can't be ⁓ appealed, and it's this exact reason, right? Like it just opens up this Pandora's box and creates a a massive mess. So I'm very surprised the FIA took this this action. Obviously a pretty good case was made by Alpine. ⁓ FOM provides all the timing information and they use those timing loops to measure the pit lane speed and you know, I I it's absolutely fair enough that something wasn't right. And I think we could tell that in the race by the sheer amount of penalties that were getting dished out. Like it doesn't It just didn't make sense that that many drivers would be making the same error. ⁓ although interestingly, you know, there were teams that were on the case on that front and, you know, w were instructing their drivers how to avoid that. But still it's usually this would be one of those cases where, you know, that the the FIA would sit back and go, All right, well look, they're right, but we have a we have the safeguard of this in race penalty that there can't be a peeled system to avoid this. So, you know, I that that's great. We we don't ⁓ we can just actually, you know, hide behind that. ⁓ and it's probably the smarter thing to do because yeah, it just changes all these other things because who was racing who in what way or whatever. Like it's it's kind of it's it really does, you know, lead down a dangerous path of trying to extrapolate race results and outcomes that, you know, that that didn't happen. I don't know. It's a it's a weird one. speaker-0: And given that he didn't serve the two five second penalties during the race, isn't that saying to people who think they might be in the right, don't serve those and we'll appeal it after the Like th this is Yeah, definitely this is crazy precedence we're setting here. And as far as I can see, it's the first time I've heard of that. I don't know whether you can tell me different, but I don't remember this ever happened before. speaker-1: No, not not in this way. And again, when there were so many other drivers affected by those penalties, then you know, if you're admitting that one was wrong, then it's effective recognition they were all wrong, really. So it'll be very, very interesting to see where it where it kind of goes from from here. Like I think I don't I've got no issue with our pain having a crack at it. Like you're gonna give it a go, right? Like that's ⁓ and and fundamentally like it's been proven that they were hard done by. But yeah, it's just you know, like I say, we have this, it's it's it's like the same with ⁓ with ⁓ Technical infringements. You know, whether it's performance whether there's a performance gain or a gain or not doesn't factor into it. It is a disqualification from a session if you have a technical infringement because you just cannot give anyone a millimeter, let alone an inch. And that's where and it sort of feels like we might be sort of head heading into that territory with this ⁓ stuff as well. speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ Fernando Alonso, your man, retired from what he openly stated could be his last Barcelona Grand Prix with a battery issue and declared the fan support that he received during the weekend was his one and only highlight. After being outqualified by teammate ⁓ Lance Stroll. Alonso rude the worst car and the worst engine he's ever driven. His weekend suffered a further blow when Aston Martin announced that he would start the Grand Prix from Pit Lane as they changed his energy store in MG UK. It had Alonso telling his fans that he would rather stay there to watch the race with them, as it would be more comfortable than in the car. The Formula One rumour though never sleeps in the latest bombshell currently circulating around Europe is that an absolute masterclass in nostalgia, according to a new report from Motorsport Italy. A clamorous hypothesis is emerging from the twenty twenty seven season the grand return of Fernando Alonso to Alpine. That's I'm no Colapinto man, but that's not a good move. speaker-1: Look, I don't really know what a clamorous hypothesis is, to be fair to be honest. But ⁓ Yeah, I just never rule out Fernando Alonso showing back up at Alpine. It just seems like it's Really There's a plausibility. Well, it's just happened so many times. There's a plausibility to it that's just ⁓ that's undeniable to be ⁓ to be honest. But ⁓ yeah, you would think if Franco keeps going the way he's going, that they've actually got a decent little driver line up there. ⁓ at ⁓ at Alpine and the one thing we know about Fernando Alonso is that he will generally come in and be fairly disruptive to his teammate. ⁓ and ⁓ and whether that's something that ⁓ that Gasly would be all that excited about, I really don't know. speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ moving away from Formula Line, Toyota has scored its first Le Mons victory since twenty twenty two after beating BMW ⁓ in this year's edition. The number seven Toyota racing car of Kamui Kawashi, Mike Conway, and Nick DeVries, remember him, prevailed in a tense battle in the final stretch to win Lamont. ⁓ they had to fight back Toyota from fourteenth and fifteenth in hyper pole on Thursday, ⁓ as well as persevering with an offset fuel strategy in the opening hours to get into the victory hunt. For Australia, Yasashi Hins Porsche finished thirteenth cla ⁓ place in class in a pretty uneventful race for him. Kind of got lost over the weekend, I'm not gonna lie, and easily look forward to Lamont. What about you? speaker-1: I I did not see a second where was it? Was it on stand or something like that? I didn't see speaker-0: I thought we were gonna say where was it at? I was gonna say, Yeah, it was at Le Mont. ⁓ yeah, I think it was on stand and there was all sorts of complaints about their coverage as well, including the fact that it turned off exactly at the twenty four hour mark, so speaker-1: Yeah, but I mean Nick DeFries winning it, ⁓ that just sums up Le Monte and I like it. So that's there you go. It is just it is just the F one scrap even, there you go, and you're ⁓ the greatest sports car driver ever. speaker-0: ⁓ keen listeners to this show would have heard us about two months ago allude to the fact that Matt Campbell is going to leave Porsche and join Ford for its new hypercar program in a massive coup for the Blue Oval. Campbell's career has been the subject of speculation after Porsche pulled out of WEC and his IMSA program was reduced to just to the endurance events. Now his long-rivet manufacturers switch has been set in stone. It ends a relationship with Porsche that dates back to 2014 for McElray racing. Campbell was announced at Ford alongside fellow grand touring and sports car stars Nick Yololi and Tom Blonckfist. Yololi has won the world's biggest GT3 endurance races at Spa and Nurberg Ring while Blockfist is a Daytona winner and IMSA champion. Ford's New Hypercar stands atop of its racing ladder above the Mustang GT3, the Mustang GT4, and the Dark Horse R and has everyone excited over there, including Global Director Mark Rushbrook. Yeah, it's a s It's gonna be weird not seeing him in a Porsche, let's be fair. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, but obviously some nice ties to local programs back here through that forward connection. So ⁓ hopefully it means we see a bit more of Maddie down under, whether it's at Bathurst in February or Bathurst in October. speaker-0: When we look at ⁓ we we mentioned Queensland Raceway before, but I just thought this is an interesting tie, and Ollie Wickham took his first Mustang Cup Australia victory, leading home his teammate Jack Perkins, with the Triple Eight pair crossing the line of formation finish. The victory was enough to give Wickham the round victory in his series debut. The win came in the same week that Triple Eight signed him to a development racing programme contract. The teenager only joined the Erebus Academy last year and went on to win the GR Cup. Wickham currently leads the Formula Four championship. Fair raps on this kid. speaker-1: Yeah, no, he definitely goes all right and he's ⁓ he's caught the attention of the right people there. He was already, ⁓ you referenced the fact that he was part of the Erebus Academy and and I know Barry Ryan rates him really, really highly as well. So, ⁓ so yeah, there's some pretty positive signs there. Even to go out and and and beat Perco, to be honest, is ⁓ is a pretty impressive thing to do because Jack is a very, very good benchmark. to be putting yourself against. So ⁓ I actually think so Ollie was driving the Erebus car last December, the same day I did. So I'm guessing he's had a good look at my data. And that taught him taught him all he needs to know to ⁓ to you know, for this springboard to greatness, I would imagine. speaker-0: It's always good to see where someone's been tearing the tires up under brakes to find out where you don't need to be doing that. ⁓ NASCAR in the Kiwis and Nazis overseas. Shane Van Gisbergen qualified 31st for the new, new, all new P Steel 400 at Piccono Raceway. It was a bad day for SVG. He was part of the trigger that set off a multi-car crash ending at the race in 31st, in a race once again won by Danny Hamlin, who is ⁓ starting to string together some sort of season over there. And finally, just back to F three ⁓ in Catalonia, James Wharton. one Saturday sprint race ⁓ in Barcelona and then ran twelfth in the feature race on Sunday, so well done James for the win on Saturday. But ⁓ that's about it, I reckon. Alright, we'll go to a break and we'll come back and we'll preview this weekend's Darwin ⁓ triple crown. Winter could spell bad news for your vehicle's battery. Here are three maintenance tips from the battery gurus at RNJ Batteries. 1. Avoid frequent short trips to keep your battery at a healthy state of charge. 2. Keep the battery terminals clean and corrosion free. 3. Avoid running your accessories with the engine off for too long. If your battery is three years or older, it might be time to get it tested for free at your local RJ Batteries. RJ Batteries Power. Like nothing else. Yes, welcome back and ⁓ let's look at the upcoming round in Darwin. It's the beta Darwin Triple Crown from Hidden Valley. ⁓ we'll start with the weather as we always do, and I've just got the official weather forecast from the bomb. Hot as balls, it says. ⁓ which is a sh genuine shock, I'm not gonna lie. speaker-1: I've not even bothered looking at a weather forecast yet, 'cause it's the same every year. Thirty one degrees and you gotta stay in the shade. speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ we'll break down the races on Friday. There's qualifying and a thirty five lap race. Saturday qualifying a top ten shootout, seventy laps, same again on Sunday. Rutto, let's do some predictions. Who's your podium for this weekend? speaker-1: Whoa, all right. I'm coming into this a little under prepared, but ⁓ I think we could see a Chevy driver up there. Yeah. I mean ⁓ bro Brock Veney's so good in Darwin, so I'll I've got to have him at the top. ⁓ I wouldn't let's let's go a bit rogue and maybe have Cam Waters having a bit of a resurgence of a weekend. ⁓ and let's put Anton up there as well. speaker-0: Okay. One from each camp. ⁓ is ⁓ y you you're trying to just keep the peace up there when you get up there this weekend? speaker-1: No, I don't have any Toyota drivers there. I mean I guess that's gonna be a big question mark with that with that big long straight there, although in Tassie all the concerns about ⁓ you know, this sort of hole in the ⁓ in the in the horsepower graph didn't really seem to be a big issue, but I just I've more gone th gone those drivers on on, you know, past performances in Darwin. ⁓ yeah, that's so that's that's where I'm going with that. speaker-0: My trifecta's about to pay three dollars fifty because I'm going Brody Brock Will. So ⁓ don't expect big returns if you actually do have a bit of a punt on that. What about on the shootout? Are you just gonna go with the standard Brock Feeney specialized? speaker-1: Yep. Yeah, I think Brock's hard to beat in shootouts, ⁓ at any time, so I could see him grabbing both of those poles. speaker-0: Yep. I think the same. ⁓ what about your best Ruffy for the weekend? speaker-1: Chuck and maybe it's not a super roughie based on how we went in in Tassie on the Sunday, but I'm gonna chuck ⁓ the juice, Jaden Ojada, in there because again, we know that we've seen Premier cars be quick there before. ⁓ we know the Chevy package. If they are back to, you know, if they have found that repeatability with setup with the latest aero change. ⁓ they ⁓ you know there's no reason to think the Camaro won't be a decent car up there. So I reckon ⁓ I could see Juice building on his ⁓ Standout performance on Sunday in Tassie and and having a pretty good weekend, ⁓ up north. speaker-0: Best Ruffy for me is Thomas Randell. ⁓ I just get a feeling. Just get a feeling. ⁓ safety cars for you this weekend? speaker-1: What have we got? Three. We'll go let's go two across the three races. I'd love to say more, but we're just not seeing ⁓ at the moment. speaker-0: I'll say zero. Unless there's grass fires. Maybe we can r rely on some grass fires. speaker-1: Badley just not getting the laps out there in the ⁓ in the Subaru WRX. speaker-0: ⁓ what's your unlikely headline for the weekend? Have you prepared anything for this? speaker-1: I haven't. Something about no mention of crocodiles, I suppose. Along those lines. speaker-0: I've got Supercar's Paddock report very little difference in conditions between Simmons Plains and Hidden Valley. Don't think we're gonna be reading that. be tough to sell a a team jacket up there if you're doing the merch sales this weekend. ⁓ if this is the answer, what's the question? The answer is leather shoes. What's the question? speaker-1: This could have something to do with crocodiles as well, right? Because that's what that's what they're made of. I got nothing. What do you got? What do you got? speaker-0: What's the best possible outcome for all those crocodiles that we see up there every year in every story? What about this one? Yeah. If this is the this is the answer, what is the question? The answer is yes. What's the question? speaker-1: ⁓ no, I don't know. I don't know. Go what do you got? speaker-0: How many beers will be consumed at the Speed Cafe Airbnb this weekend? Yes. Yep. speaker-1: That's a good I had I was actually trying to think of some sort of beer joke because it is obviously, you know, Darwin is probably the greatest of the beer drinking rounds of the entire season. So yeah. Something about something about the warm weather and trunno, whatever else goes on up there. speaker-0: Who knew? All right, we'll go to a break and we'll come back with rear of grid and credit or shredded. Yeah, welcome back to Rear of Grid again, AVL. You were a high high level contributor in the ⁓ Discord over the weekend, especially around the Grand Prix. speaker-1: Yeah, no, it was fun. It's the only problem with doing live updates for the website is that I was sort of trying to balance doing live updates in the ⁓ in the Discord and and on the website. It was ⁓ so I had a fair bit going on. speaker-0: I'm praying that one day you write your thoughts on Discord into the live updates. That will be sensational. You I mean obviously you'll be looking for work the next day and some of the thoughts you share, but ⁓ speaker-1: They are they are a very different ⁓ style of commentary between them. speaker-0: So if you do want to become part of that, FCTTN.com, follow the links from there, join up and join in the fun. ⁓ credit or shredded this week, mate. Let's start with this one. So basically I'm gonna make a statement, you tell me credit or shreddit. We'll come back after we've done all six. Number one, Renee Gracie is the best female circuit racer from this country in this century. speaker-1: ⁓ that is an excellent one. I'll go with I'll go with Shredit and we'll chat about it. speaker-0: Okay, I'll go credit. Number two, Oscar Piastri is no longer in the top five drivers on the F one grid. speaker-1: Ooh, that's interesting. That's really interesting. I'll go with shredded. speaker-0: Credit. Number three, forget coaches. F one drivers should be hunting out for any spare Kardashians moving forward. speaker-1: ⁓ that's a full credit. speaker-0: Even if it's Caitlin Jenner, that's a credit. ⁓ number four. Even though he left with zero points for the weekend, Kimmy Antonelli storming past George Russell late in the race will be a dagger to George's heart in the cold light of day. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: Credit. Number five, despite all the posturing, Groves would be better off letting Matt Payne leave at the end of this year. speaker-1: ⁓ I'm gonna go with a shredded with a butt. speaker-0: I'm gonna go the exact opposite with the same ⁓ disclaimer. So credit, but we'll come back to that. Number six. With his with this win, Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari has been a success for all people involved. speaker-1: Yeah, I'd go with the credit on that. speaker-0: Yeah, same. Tell me about Renee Gracie. Why isn't she the best female? speaker-1: It's just such a big statement. But she's certainly very accomplished as a as a female motorsport athlete in this country. Like it's something I'd never really thought about it, to be honest. But I'd have to probably have a have a think about, you know, the other there's been some very successful women as well. I mean, Leanne ⁓ Ferrier, ⁓ obviously, you know, Australian Formula Three champion, Australian Formula Four champion. ⁓ well, she won the Formula Four championship not that long ago. It was a while ago now, but ⁓ speaker-0: What year was that but? speaker-1: 'Cause she went sort of back to back to 'cause that was a Juratech championship. So ⁓ so you know, a couple of a couple of national championships there for her. So ⁓ she was pretty handy. And I guess, yeah, I guess the shredded is cause it's just such a huge statement, but it's certainly ⁓ an interesting question to pose. And and I Renee is definitely if you think about, you know, the Baths 1000 starts and ⁓ and you know, w obviously wins now on GT cars and that sort of stuff. Yeah, she's she's a pretty accomplished and and capable race driver, no doubt about it. speaker-0: I said credit because I just couldn't think of anyone else. Now you say Ferrier. I'll stick with my original thought, but yeah, that's interesting. ⁓ Oscar is no longer in the top five drivers. Man. speaker-1: So who I I guess like it's always this is always a tough one 'cause you could say like was he ever in the top five drivers? Like speaker-0: I think so. Like this time last year, definitely. It was leading and looking untouchable at one time. speaker-1: Yeah, but like in a car that was insanely quick, they don't penalise drivers because of they're in the fastest car. That's normally because they're good drivers, they end up in the fastest car. But so who's who's who ⁓ is ahead of him? speaker-0: George, maybe. But I'll throw in Kimmy, I'll throw in Charles, I'll throw in Lewis on current form. and as much as I hate to say this, Blender. speaker-1: Yeah, well I I I certainly think that he's you know, this season it's certainly Lando was leading the way at McLaren. ⁓ and that was, you know, that's it was always the the danger of letting last year slip is that you sort of go, Was that the chance? Not just because of things you can control, but you know, are you gonna have the car and this year they don't have the car to to challenge for the title? But yeah, was that the year where you could just get one up on your teammate? ⁓ you know, Nico Rosberg esque and just go, Well, this is it, this is my year. This is the one year it's it's gonna happen to the to you know, in his case to the point where he just didn't bother coming back. Just that'll do me. It's never gonna do that again. speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ the hunt for the Kardashians to get a spare one. Yeah. Moving speaker-1: ⁓ it's it's lucky there's plenty of them out there because ⁓ I reckon they'll be in they'll be in demand. Seems to be doing the job for Lewis. speaker-0: Would it be bad darts if Charles invited Kanye to the next race as his guest? Yeah, I think Just parked him in parked him in pits. That's what speaker-1: Well, Shaw rocked up on the Thursday Media Day wearing a f L H forty four shirt. So ⁓ all right, I think there's ⁓ I think they're they must be great mates. Unless that's another way to just psych him out. speaker-0: Maybe that just means both of them get dressed in the dark, not just Lewis. ⁓ George Russell will be feeling it after Kim Anton Kimmy Antonelli went past him late in the race. Mate, I thought first of all, I thought his late decision to try and defend that down the bottom straight. Unbelievable. speaker-1: off the road. I thought clean clean off the road. That was ⁓ that was that was pretty impressive. And ⁓ yeah no that that will have hurt. There's no way. Particularly 'cause like he was really ⁓ like up and about about, you know, I'm back. You know, it's good to be back in the groove. I've stopped trying to copy Kimmy and I'm on pole and life's going so well. And then when he was watching that ⁓ that other Mercedes go flying past him, I reckon that would have ⁓ that would have stung, no doubt about it. And obviously, you know, a net benefit to him. ⁓ with Kimmy retiring, but I doubt very much he's sitting back right now going, Well, this is all going great. speaker-0: Mm, I agree. ⁓ it's probably the worst ever outcome of gaining 20 points on your on your biggest competitor and still feeling like you lost. ⁓ Yeah, Groves would be better off signing. Here's my theory on this. Groves would be better off letting pain go. You say shred it. speaker-1: Yeah, there's a few there's a few ⁓ a few parts to this for me. So I went tread it ⁓ because I do like it it has it has got to a point where it feels like contracts are just so useless. Like and I kind of admire the grunt of saying, No, no, you signed a bit of paper that said you're gonna race at this team until this date and that's what we're gonna do. That's what the bit of paper says and you signed it. Your signatures like right there. See? So this is how we're gonna do it. So ⁓ I I do admire the sort of headstrong approach from the Groves because we usually just see teams fault and and either, you know, facilitate a payout whichever way it goes, or just, you know, like Will Brown leaving Erebus, just tear the contract up. So ⁓ yeah, that's why I went to shred it. But you know, you could certainly argue ⁓ that, you know, you you do you really want a driver who doesn't want to be there at your team? Probably not. But the same time they are like that's the scenario right now. And they're they're collecting a few trophies. So Matt And the team obviously have a pretty good system when it comes to ⁓ putting that aside on race day and going out there and getting the job done. speaker-0: Yep. I said credit only for a coup with a couple of stipulations and this will probably just there's a domino effect to this. First of all, if Matt does win the title, he's not allowed to take the number one plate with him wherever he goes. Mm-hmm. Right? That would be my first stipulation. Second, only if we can get Waters, which obviously Tickford will then be saying, Well, hang on, why would we let Waters go? But here's the kicker. You listenin'? Mm-hmm. If Ford can somehow convince Valtery Bottas to come and drive for Tickford for a year. Well they reckon that's not as solid as you'd like to think. speaker-1: Well, there you go. There you go, speaker-0: There's some wild moving parts that you'd have to happen, but yep, you know. ⁓ 'cause that's the only person I can think of that they could drop into the ⁓ monster car if it's remains the monster car and still feel like there's a good outcome to come out of it. So ⁓ Hanelner Ferrari's been a success. I mean, the wind the wind kind of cements it. I ⁓ speaker-1: Yeah, that's yeah, totally, I agree. speaker-0: Prior to that, it was ⁓ it was a argument you could have each way, but ⁓ yeah, I think the win has been very good. And like you say, the the turn of pace at the moment, you you can't say that he's not a he's look, he's an outside sniff, but he's still a sniff at the title, so you've gotta you've got to look at that. ⁓ all right, I found it of the week before we finish up, and you have to go and get on a plane. It comes from Josh Harris on Discord. He says, Over the weekend, I watched a replay of the 2008 Clips for 500. speaker-1: Yeah, definitely. speaker-0: This is peak VH supercars time from basically all accounts of those in the industry. Ask anyone, and the mid to late 2000s is the peak of the sport. Supercars events have, in all respects, imp ⁓ improved since this time, in my opinion. The cars are more reliable, the racing closer, and the teams and drivers are more professional. The support categories produce some of the best racing in the country too. There's concerts, speedway, motocross demos, the list goes on. But what is missing to make the current day and age the heyday of supercars? What do we need to do to get the profile it once had? speaker-1: Yeah, I agree with everything that Josh has said there in terms of you know, what the when the peak of and in the popularity of the sport was, ⁓ and the fact that we actually do actually have a better product now, ⁓ but there's not necessarily the same scale of audience, particularly when it comes, you know, to the at event experience. If I knew the answer to how to fix it, ⁓ I speaker-0: You'd be a genius. speaker-1: Yeah, I'd probably be ⁓ making a a an absolute bucket load of money right now instead of sitting here talking to you. So I don't necessarily have an answer. There's all sorts of little bits and pieces that you can attribute. Obviously, you know, the there's the that sort of shifting dynamic in terms of what people's interests in cars are and what they're buying and that lack of kind of the connection that they build with the cars that they see racing. ⁓ there so there's less of that than in the in the Falcon and and Commodore heyday in terms of Them selling cars and that sort of stuff. You look at, you know, audience behavior has just shifted in terms of ease of access to things like watching Formula One, you know, and all that sort of stuff. Because that's, you know, there's just so much sport out there to watch from all sorts of different codes. And even within, you're not just competing against footy codes and that you're competing against yourself now because it's so much easier to watch F1 than it used to be. So, you know, you've got that's that's the decision to make. And it's no different, you know, the A League's biggest. ⁓ competition is the EPL and the NBL's biggest competition is the ⁓ is the NBA footy sh the footy codes have kind of you know but th one of the secrets to their success is that there is no rival to the AFL, apart from the N R L really, but in terms of there's not another version of the AFL out there that's bigger and better than the AFL. And same with the N R L because obviously they play rugby league in in in other countries and I'm not an expert but I can't imagine that like, you know, the British series, whatever it's called, holds to the to the N R L. So ⁓ you know, th that they that is the NBA equivalent of of that particular sport. So I think that's, you know, just that the ease with which people can view almost anything from around the world, you know, like just all of it contributes to to a a a tougher fight for for market share and audience share. And and it was obviously in that time, you know, Channel Ten were doing a lot of promo and it was accessible and all that sort of stuff. And we know we have the T V deal we have because we have to have it. We know that sports can flourish under that 'cause look at the footy codes. But yeah, all of this stuff I think just contributes to to the fact that it is a it's a battle out there to to get eyeballs onto your sport. speaker-0: I think everything you just said is true and makes every ounce of sense. The one thing I think we could do a little bit better, and it's something that both you and I have spoken about earlier this year, is some feeling. Feeling between drivers, feeling between teams, feeling just some feeling. Like it just seems like it's all good we're all mates and th the mate again, we've we've done this to death, but ⁓ ultimately just some hatred. Like the the you look at Easton Creek between Skafen and ⁓ Ingle. That was headline news. When when would supercars outside of some horrendous God forbid touch wood some horrendous crash, when would supercars become headline news out you know? So that sort of thing would certainly give you a leg up into some sort of I don't know, lifting the profile and getting people aboard to go, ⁓ what's this all about? Let's have a look at this. speaker-1: Yep, totally agree. Totally agree with that. speaker-0: Alright, that'll better do us for this episode of Full Credit of the Noise. Don't forget you can find the show on all the socials at FCTTN Podcast and you can read ABL's excellent work at speedcafe.com where they break all the big motorsport news first. Until next time, I've been Former Legend, he's been ABL. This has been Full Credit the Noise and we'll see you in the middle of Australia in two days time. speaker-1: Salut. speaker-0: Full credit to the noise.
