Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Gun crime on the rise in Auckland. In the first
- 0:02Speaker 1: six months of this year, there were eight hundred and
- 0:05Speaker 1: seventy nine offenses. That is twenty eight more than last year.
- 0:09Speaker 1: But the concerning number just eighteen of those almost nine
- 0:12Speaker 1: hundred offences were committed by people with an active firearms license.
- 0:15Speaker 1: So basically almost one hundred percent of this is people
- 0:19Speaker 1: who do not have a firearms license with guns that
- 0:22Speaker 1: got them. Well, who knows. Sonny Kaschelle is the chair
- 0:25Speaker 1: of the Ministerial Advisory Group for Victims of Retail Crime.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Is with me this morning, Sunny, good morning, really good morning, Ryan,
- 0:31Speaker 1: Good to have you on the show. Where are they
- 0:33Speaker 1: getting all these guns?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Look, there's the issue that we must also look at
- 0:39Speaker 2: how guns are entering into the country. You know, as
- 0:42Speaker 2: with drugs, there's a need to enhance border control. It's
- 0:46Speaker 2: alarming that nearly ninety nine point eight percent of one
- 0:50Speaker 2: million risk assessed shipping continents are not inspected. So Ryan,
- 0:55Speaker 2: you know, New Zealand is fast becoming a violent society.
- 0:59Speaker 2: This is a national discussion we need to have. You know,
- 1:01Speaker 2: we need some issues that will work, not virtual signaling,
- 1:06Speaker 2: because criminals are acting with impunity. As a dramatic increasing
- 1:11Speaker 2: gun use has just shown and this data.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess the thing is if they can bring
- 1:15Speaker 1: them in on the boats, we're not checking all the boats.
- 1:17Speaker 1: We're never going to be able to check all the containers.
- 1:20Speaker 1: They can print them three D these days, they can
- 1:23Speaker 1: steal them from existing gun owners. I mean that the
- 1:26Speaker 1: horse is bolted, hasn't it.
- 1:28Speaker 2: That's true that the real issue we face is the
- 1:31Speaker 2: overwhelming number of illegal guns not legally had, of firearms
- 1:35Speaker 2: my license honors, as you rightly said earlier, So we
- 1:38Speaker 2: need to focus on cracking on cracking down on these
- 1:42Speaker 2: illegal firearms than diverting excessive sources to That's.
- 1:48Speaker 1: What we're doing now, Sonny. And there's more and more
- 1:51Speaker 1: of them.
- 1:52Speaker 2: There's true. But we must also it's a bit crucial
- 1:57Speaker 2: that the decisions are on FARMA arms policy are shaped
- 2:01Speaker 2: by those who deal with the gun violen directly. That's
- 2:04Speaker 2: a police and affected communities, not just policymakers in Wellington
- 2:08Speaker 2: who don't experience these traits firsthand.
- 2:12Speaker 1: What are they deary owners feeling, because obviously that's those
- 2:15Speaker 1: stats aren't good. What are they feeling? What are they
- 2:17Speaker 1: doing to better protect themselves? Now?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Well I mean they right now, in the given situation
- 2:24Speaker 2: of the crime at they actually cannot protect themselves. And
- 2:29Speaker 2: that's one area that we are working. You know, what
- 2:34Speaker 2: are the areas in the climate and also sentencing that
- 2:38Speaker 2: can be changed. But coming to a gun crime site,
- 2:42Speaker 2: you know, I do support Nicole McKee's review of the firearms,
- 2:47Speaker 2: just to determine if it is the best use of
- 2:50Speaker 2: limited resources to prevent gun gun crime. But we don't
- 2:54Speaker 2: want to prejudge the review.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I understand what you're saying. Starting thank you very
- 2:59Speaker 1: much for coming on the shows. Only Koshelle who was
- 3:01Speaker 1: with the Dairyan Business Owners Group, he's no longer with them.
- 3:05Speaker 1: He's the chair of the Ministerial Advisory the group for
- 3:08Speaker 1: Victims of retail crime. It is eighteen minutes after five.
- 3:11Speaker 1: We'd love to hear your views on that this morning,
- 3:13Speaker 1: nine two ninety. I mean, in my mind, the horse
- 3:15Speaker 1: has bolted, whether they bring them in on cargo ships,
- 3:18Speaker 1: whether they make them in their own living rooms via
- 3:20Speaker 1: three D printing, whether they steal them from a farmer.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Gangs are going to get guns, aren't they. So what
- 3:27Speaker 1: do you do arm yourself? I can't say that, can you?
- 3:31Speaker 1: For more? From early edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live
- 3:34Speaker 1: to news talks it'd be from five am weekdays, or
