- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily quote, the podcast designed to
- 0:07kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host Andrew Mcgibbon, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by the Great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:18heard. Today's quote comes from Novell
- 0:21Rabacant, entrepreneur, philosopher and Co founder of
- 0:25Angel List. He's one of Silicon Valley's
- 0:28most influential thinkers on wealth, happiness and how to
- 0:32build a life that actually works.
- 0:35He once said find what feels like play to you but looks like
- 0:42work to others. This question sounds simple.
- 0:47It is anything but. Most career advice tells you to
- 0:50follow your passion, find your purpose, and do what you love.
- 0:55Naval's version is more precise than that, and more useful.
- 1:00He's not just asking what you enjoy, he's asking what you
- 1:03enjoy so much that you'd be willing to do it for hours and
- 1:08wouldn't notice time passing while someone watching from the
- 1:12outside would think you were grinding away.
- 1:16That gap between how it feels to you and what it looks like to
- 1:20everyone else is where your greatest competitive advantage
- 1:24lives. Novell explains that when work
- 1:27feels like play, you will out compete everyone doing the same
- 1:31thing as actual work because you'll do it effortlessly for a
- 1:37longer without burning out. If others want to compete with
- 1:42you, they're going to be working while you're playing and they're
- 1:47going to lose. Think about what that means in
- 1:50any field. The people who rise to the top
- 1:53aren't always the most talented at the start.
- 1:56They're often simply the ones who couldn't stop doing it, who
- 2:00found it so naturally engaging that the hours others found
- 2:04exhausting felt to them like play.
- 2:07Naval ties this directly to what he calls specific knowledge,
- 2:12skills that come only from genuine interest, not from
- 2:16training programs or schools. When someone truly enjoys what
- 2:20they're doing, they spend more time on it without forcing
- 2:23themselves. Learning happens faster and
- 2:27effort feels lighter. That's not just a career
- 2:30philosophy, it's a competitive strategy.
- 2:34Find the overlap between what lights you up and what the world
- 2:38values, and no one can touch you.
- 2:42When I started this podcast, people would ask how I find the
- 2:45time to do a Daily Show. The honest answer is that it
- 2:49never felt like I was spending time.
- 2:52I was enjoying the time researching quotes, crafting
- 2:55scripts, thinking about ideas that might shift someone's
- 2:59perspective. To me, that's play.
- 3:02To someone on the outside, it might actually look like a daily
- 3:06production grind. And that's exactly what
- 3:09Novella's describing. And I think it's one of the best
- 3:12tests available for whether you're doing the right work.
- 3:16Not how successful it looks, but how it feels from the inside.
- 3:21So here's the question. What feels like play to you, but
- 3:25looks like work to everyone else?
- 3:28Not what you think you should love.
- 3:30Not what seems impressive or practical.
- 3:33What actually lights you up so much that you lose track of time
- 3:36doing it? Because that's the thing.
- 3:41Find it and you'll never be outworked.
- 3:44Because for you, it was never work to begin with.
- 3:48That's it for today. I'm Andy McGivern, signing off
- 3:51for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:56Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
