- 0:05Seahawks route The Chiefs as Harrison Butker misses two more kicks in
- 0:08a dismal all around showing. Written by Dave Scretta This article

- 0:20Missouri, the AP. The Chiefs had been dominated in the trenches, Kenneth
- 0:25Walker had gone nowhere in this return to Seattle, and Patrick Mahomes
- 0:28had been under duress all game, leaving Kansas City with a mere
- 0:32field goal on the board in the fourth quarter Sunday night. Yet
- 0:35the Chiefs were still in the game. Until kicker Harrison Bucker missed
- 0:40another field goal attempt, this time from forty five yards, a relative
- 0:45chip shot in the NFL these days. That would have made it
- 0:48a one possession game with eight and a half minutes to go
- 0:51It was Bucker's second miss of the night, and the reigning Super
- 0:54Bowl champion Seahawks handled their business from there, handing Kansas City, a
- 0:58humbling twenty three defeat. Chiefs coach Andy Reid took the blame for
- 1:03everything afterward, his usual response to such a lackluster performance. Yet there
- 1:08was plenty to go around, but the difference between Butker's misses and
- 1:11an ineffective offense is that the former has become a long term
- 1:15issue for Kansas City, while the woes for Mahomes and Company were
- 1:19in aberration so far this season, Butker has missed fifteen kicks, ten
- 1:23field goal attempts, five PATs since the start of last season, the
- 1:27most in the NFL. Life of a kicker, Bucker said. It either
- 1:31goes in or it doesn't. Unfortunately, there's been some kicks that haven't
- 1:35gone in the misses, including multiple kicks in back to back games
- 1:39and four of the first six this season, hadn't cost the Chiefs
- 1:43five and one until Sunday night. But when the offense was struggling
- 1:47to get into the end zone, they became one of the deciding
- 1:50factors in the game. Bucker's consistency is especially frustrating, given what Kansas
- 1:55City has invested in him. He's the third highest paid kicker in
- 1:59the league, carrying the sixth highest base salary on The
- 2:02team, money that could have been invested in the wide receiver core,
- 2:06which is struggling without the injured Taekwond Thornton and Rashi Rice, or
- 2:10the injury riddled offensive line. It bears mentioning that the Chiefs could
- 2:15get out of Buck's contract after this season with only a manageable
- 2:19amount of dead money affecting their salary cap. So the pressure is
- 2:22on him to fix his consistency issues, for more reasons than one.
- 2:27He's been one of the most consistent kickers in football. He's off
- 2:30a bit, Reed acknowledged, so got to fix it. What's working? The
- 2:36Chiefs committed only two U penalties in the game. That was just
- 2:40about the only highlight. That needs help? Everything else. The offense
- 2:46managed fifty yards rushing and two hundred and thirteen yards in total,
- 2:50while going three for eleven on third down and possessing the ball
- 2:54nearly eleven minutes less than Seattle. On defense, the Chiefs coughed up
- 2:58one hundred and fifty-three yards rushing and four hundred and ten yards
- 3:02in all, while allowing Sam Darnold and his offense to convert eleven
- 3:05of sixteen third downs and control the game from start to finish.
- 3:10You don't want to perform like his in prime time in a
- 3:13big moment like this, Mahomes said. You got to feel it on
- 3:16that plane ride home and understand that it sucks, but then how
- 3:19can you build off it? That's the biggest thing. Stock up. Noel
- 3:25Williams picked off a pass in the end zone and returned at
- 3:28sixty five yards, giving the
- 3:30Chiefs an opportunity to kick a field goal before halftime, which Butker
- 3:34missed. Williams, a second year pro, has been quietly solid at cornerback
- 3:38for Kansas City all season. Stock down. The Seahawks made a point
- 3:44of picking on defensive back Lagarius Sneed, and for good season He
- 3:48has struggled all season in his return to Kansas City, where he
- 3:51started his career before a forgettably short tenure in Tennessee. Injuries.
- 3:57Wright's remained out with a hamstring injury, and Wright tackle Jalen Moore
- 4:02missed the game while in the concussion protocol. Getting one or both
- 4:06back for Sunday's trip to Denver would help an offense that stagnated
- 4:09badly against the Seahawks. Key number. Two. That's the number of times
- 4:16the Chiefs have scored three points or fewer with Mahomes at quarterback.
- 4:20The first time came in a twenty seven three loss to the
- 4:23Titans on october twenty fourth, twenty twenty one, and the second time
- 4:26came Sunday night in Seattle. Up next. The Chiefs visit the Broncos,
- 4:33whom they routed thirty one ten in their season opener at Arrowhead
- 4:36Stadium. Denver has played well after its slow start, winning its last
- 4:39three games, including a seventeen fourteen victory over the same Seahawks that
- 4:44just waylaid Kansas City. See the AP's full NFL coverage here.
