- 0:00Speaker 1: And it is Friday morning, and what a morning we've
- 0:02Speaker 1: got lined up for you. Joining us in the studio
- 0:04Speaker 1: today is the Colp's Murray Claire Boothby, who's the shadow
- 0:08Speaker 1: for Tourism and Hospitality and various other portfolios.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Good morning to.
- 0:12Speaker 3: You, Good morning, Katy, and good morning listeners.
- 0:14Speaker 2: We've got Paul Kirby from the Labor Party. Good morning to.
- 0:17Speaker 4: You, Paul Kirby, Katie morning everyone.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And Minister for Public Employment of course, small business and
- 0:22Speaker 1: wreck fishing. And we've also got Pezia Puric, the independent
- 0:26Speaker 1: member for Goider and spokesperson for.
- 0:28Speaker 5: Everything everything, especially snakes, pickets and.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well then we've got back coming morning. I'm sitting there
- 0:37Speaker 2: with you in the lefty corner. I'm not sure what's
- 0:39Speaker 2: going on there conning.
- 0:40Speaker 6: This Kezy Epuric development reminds me of when Labour first
- 0:44Speaker 6: came to power and we had the Assistant Minister for
- 0:46Speaker 6: assisting the Minister on the assistance of the araf Your games, So.
- 0:51Speaker 7: What do you reckon?
- 0:52Speaker 1: We're giving Kezer just any portfolio victor that you'd like assisting. Well,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I tell you what, it has been an incredibly busy week.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's sort of hard to know where to start, but
- 1:01Speaker 1: we might go with the situation that we know continues
- 1:04Speaker 1: on at this point, and that is the COVID situation.
- 1:07Speaker 1: One new case was reported yesterday and rock Hole is
- 1:11Speaker 1: set to transition into a normal lockdown rather than that
- 1:14Speaker 1: hard lockdown. Chief Minister Michael Gunner said that the new
- 1:17Speaker 1: case was a teenager from Binjari who was in isolation
- 1:20Speaker 1: at the Center for National Resilience. It's unlikely that he
- 1:23Speaker 1: was infectious in the community. We do know that wastewater
- 1:27Speaker 1: testing and virus testing from Rock Hole has both returned negative,
- 1:31Speaker 1: promoting well prompting, i should say, the community to transition
- 1:34Speaker 1: into that normal lockdown. We also know though that the
- 1:38Speaker 1: wastewater results from Bisentennial Road catchment returned a week positive.
- 1:43Speaker 1: There was a positive in Martin Place sub catchment and
- 1:47Speaker 1: a negative result which was returned in Berrima. I guess
- 1:51Speaker 1: we're all waiting to see exactly what happens. A little
- 1:53Speaker 1: bit later this morning, I'm assuming a press conference bit
- 1:56Speaker 1: after eleven o'clock Curbs.
- 1:58Speaker 8: Yeah, there will be a presser.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I haven't had any details this morning, but our hearts
- 2:02Speaker 4: go out to everybody in Catherine. We just hope that
- 2:04Speaker 4: that waste water continues to be negative that we don't
- 2:07Speaker 4: get any more new cases.
- 2:08Speaker 8: We really do feel for everybody down there, and we especially.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Feel for all the people that have gone down to
- 2:13Speaker 4: help out. It's warm and Darwin, it must be even
- 2:16Speaker 4: warmer down there, and to where all that ppe and
- 2:18Speaker 4: be stomping around helping people getting food and water out.
- 2:23Speaker 4: We really think everybody that's digging in down there.
- 2:25Speaker 1: It has been bloody harsh and it must be so
- 2:28Speaker 1: hot obviously undertaking all of that work. And it's still
- 2:31Speaker 1: very early days in terms of knowing whether Catherine is
- 2:34Speaker 1: going to be transitioning into sort of more of a
- 2:36Speaker 1: lock out situation. Matt, you were at that press conference yesterday.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Did the chief maness to give a bit further indication
- 2:42Speaker 1: as to whether they're going to be transitioning out at
- 2:45Speaker 1: this point?
- 2:46Speaker 7: He did, I think, just to.
- 2:49Speaker 6: Charles Pain and Michael Gunner seemed to say that they
- 2:52Speaker 6: believe that could happen very quickly if the results continue
- 2:56Speaker 6: to be positive. It wouldn't mean that lockout would continue
- 3:00Speaker 6: at least December before. I think the data is that
- 3:02Speaker 6: they've pinted on at the moment. So if you're not vaccinated,
- 3:04Speaker 6: you'd still be effectively locked down other than the five reasons.
- 3:08Speaker 6: But if you are vaccinated, there's still restrictions in place.
- 3:10Speaker 6: Obviously you'd have to wear a mask, but they could
- 3:14Speaker 6: be moving from bock down to lockout.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and like it has a big impact on everybody,
- 3:20Speaker 1: there is no doubt about that. We've caught up quite
- 3:23Speaker 1: a few times with Joe Hersey, the local member Murray
- 3:25Speaker 1: clear down there in Catherine.
- 3:27Speaker 2: What are you hearing at this point?
- 3:29Speaker 3: So what we're hearing from Joe Hurston, of course other
- 3:31Speaker 3: members of Catherine is that it is a really tough
- 3:34Speaker 3: time down there at the moment, and it is really
- 3:36Speaker 3: difficult to get some really clear information. I noticed that
- 3:39Speaker 3: in the press conference the government was talking about, you know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: it potentially being dragged out a bit longer if people
- 3:46Speaker 3: don't get those vaccination rates up. But then in the
- 3:49Speaker 3: newspaper today it says it's imminent that it's going to
- 3:51Speaker 3: open up again. So it's very confusing, and I think
- 3:53Speaker 3: it's really important that the government need to be really
- 3:55Speaker 3: clear on the messaging around this now.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Curbs on the things that it does get raised sort
- 4:01Speaker 1: of time and time again, is the impact that these
- 4:05Speaker 1: lockdowns and the lockouts have on businesses, There is no
- 4:08Speaker 1: doubt about that. We know that there's plenty of businesses
- 4:10Speaker 1: who are doing it incredibly tough in Catherine.
- 4:13Speaker 2: At this point, I understand.
- 4:15Speaker 1: That there has been an announcement made this morning when
- 4:18Speaker 1: it comes to some of the well that emergency payment
- 4:21Speaker 1: situation and extending it.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Yeah, certainly, and we do feel for all the businesses
- 4:26Speaker 4: down there. We know it's a tough time when you
- 4:28Speaker 4: have to shut your doors, and particularly in the lead
- 4:30Speaker 4: up to Christmas, it's not a great.
- 4:33Speaker 8: Situation for anybody.
- 4:35Speaker 4: So we certainly have recognized people that have been businesses
- 4:38Speaker 4: that have been locked down for longer periods of time.
- 4:42Speaker 4: So it'll be a weekly payment for those that earn
- 4:45Speaker 4: over seventy five thousand and up to two million, it's
- 4:48Speaker 4: still that thousand dollar payment. From two million turnover to
- 4:51Speaker 4: five million is a two thousand dollar payment per week,
- 4:54Speaker 4: and from five million to ten million is now a
- 4:56Speaker 4: four thousand dollar payment a week. So we encourage people
- 5:00Speaker 4: to reach out. We've got small business Champions that will
- 5:03Speaker 4: help people through that. We've got people at the Department
- 5:05Speaker 4: of Business that will certainly help people and understand how
- 5:09Speaker 4: they have to apply for that, but we just want
- 5:11Speaker 4: to recognize, you know, we know that it's not going
- 5:14Speaker 4: to replace everything that people lose. Just helps paying the rent,
- 5:17Speaker 4: It helps pay in the power bills. That helps people
- 5:19Speaker 4: get back up and running and restock when they do
- 5:21Speaker 4: get the opportunity to which will hopefully be very very soon.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I know that.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Like I said, I know, it's been such tough going.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And I tell you what, throughout the week, one of
- 5:30Speaker 1: the things that really hasn't helped in any way, shape
- 5:33Speaker 1: or form was these claims which were being made on
- 5:36Speaker 1: social media, some incredibly serious and outright wrong, that people
- 5:41Speaker 1: were being held down and vaccinated against their will. There
- 5:44Speaker 1: were claims that the ADF was taking children from their families.
- 5:49Speaker 2: It was pretty disgusting what was being pedled.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Clayton lies, I mean with the and we're all pretty
- 5:56Speaker 5: sure where it started, but it's gone obviously around the world.
- 6:00Speaker 5: The members here, Mary Claire and Paul no and myself
- 6:03Speaker 5: we got bombarded with emails from people from god knows where.
- 6:07Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:08Speaker 5: They weren't they weren't abusive, they weren't obnoxious, but it's
- 6:10Speaker 5: just well some of the ones we got on but
- 6:12Speaker 5: not from the territory, from the territory, none from the territory.
- 6:17Speaker 5: But the other thing, too, Katie, is with the with
- 6:20Speaker 5: the modern technology we have now, isn't it interesting that
- 6:23Speaker 5: there hasn't been one video of these soldiers or sailors
- 6:26Speaker 5: or airmen held in children down and giving them vaccinations
- 6:30Speaker 5: or putting them into trucks or whatever. Not one video
- 6:32Speaker 5: when we've all got smartphones, even the kids down on
- 6:34Speaker 5: these communities would have smartphones and videos and put on
- 6:37Speaker 5: TikTok or whatever. That was the point that was made
- 6:39Speaker 5: by the health worker who we know who started this,
- 6:42Speaker 5: and that person was was reckless in the extreme, and
- 6:45Speaker 5: she should be held to account. I don't know how,
- 6:47Speaker 5: but she should be held to account.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Well, can I just add to that, because we know
- 6:50Speaker 6: who you're talking about and watch them and.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Look, we wanted to fame anyone on here.
- 6:54Speaker 6: But it was outrageous, right, And it was like, if
- 6:57Speaker 6: you watch the videos, you'd have to be insane to
- 7:00Speaker 6: believe them, right, But there's plenty of people who are
- 7:04Speaker 6: sharing them and believing them. If you come from the
- 7:05Speaker 6: Northern Territory knowing what happens here, you would have to
- 7:09Speaker 6: be out of your mind to believe them, But I
- 7:11Speaker 6: don't understand if you or I published that, if you've broadcast,
- 7:15Speaker 6: if I've published it, you'd be taken off air.
- 7:18Speaker 7: I'd be shut down.
- 7:20Speaker 6: Yet it can be put up on Facebook, and it's
- 7:22Speaker 6: up on Facebook for days and it's still there and
- 7:24Speaker 6: it's been Last time I looked, some of these videos
- 7:26Speaker 6: had been shared more than forty thousand times. They're being
- 7:29Speaker 6: shared now all over the world. They've obviously tapped into
- 7:32Speaker 6: this sort of nutjob element overseas and they're just sharing
- 7:36Speaker 6: this stuff relentlessly.
- 7:37Speaker 7: I mean, the idea that ADYF.
- 7:41Speaker 6: Personnel will be holding down kids and forcibly injecting them
- 7:44Speaker 6: is absolutely insane and can I have a crack at
- 7:48Speaker 6: another organization? I think that the performance of Amnesty International
- 7:53Speaker 6: where they went out and criticized Defense. I know they
- 7:55Speaker 6: put out a statement this morning apologizing, but it was
- 7:59Speaker 6: absolutely the absolutely reckless, irresponsible, gave weight to the conspiracy
- 8:05Speaker 6: theorists and their madness, and I think Amnesty International needs.
- 8:09Speaker 7: To do more than apologize.
- 8:10Speaker 6: I think the head of Amnesty International needs to front
- 8:14Speaker 6: up today in front of the media and explain exactly
- 8:17Speaker 6: how that happened, because all that did was take a
- 8:20Speaker 6: brand that has a lot of respect and people put
- 8:22Speaker 6: a lot of faith in and added enormous weight to
- 8:26Speaker 6: the madness of the conspiracy.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And do you know the thing that I can't wrap
- 8:29Speaker 1: my head around is I've got a fact checked right
- 8:32Speaker 1: before I get on air. I've got to make sure
- 8:33Speaker 1: that I check my facts. So for Amnesty International to
- 8:37Speaker 1: then not call the likes of Amsant yesterday or whenever
- 8:40Speaker 1: they decided that they would jump on board and you know,
- 8:43Speaker 1: share or agree with what was being spread that was
- 8:47Speaker 1: absolutely untrue. Why not check your facts first? Why not
- 8:50Speaker 1: call somebody who's on the ground to try and find
- 8:52Speaker 1: out exactly what the go is Like yesterday morning we
- 8:56Speaker 1: were on the phone, myself and my producer Dannielle must
- 8:59Speaker 1: have called you know, five different community groups in Catherine
- 9:03Speaker 1: and further Afield, trying to work out exactly what the
- 9:07Speaker 1: situation was before we got on air.
- 9:09Speaker 6: And if you want to have such strident opinions on
- 9:12Speaker 6: what happens in the Northern Territory, as Amnesty International often does,
- 9:16Speaker 6: how about having people based in the Northern Territory. You know,
- 9:19Speaker 6: Amnesty International recently ran a campaign about Northern Territory police
- 9:23Speaker 6: vehicles you know, with absolutely no understanding of what's going
- 9:26Speaker 6: on and why are they these cages? Well, you know,
- 9:28Speaker 6: because it's thirty eight degrees up here. Do you really
- 9:31Speaker 6: want to be, you know, suffocating in some enclosed capsule
- 9:35Speaker 6: like you would in another state.
- 9:36Speaker 7: I mean, it's absolutely absurd.
- 9:38Speaker 6: The other thing, the other point I make about that, Katie,
- 9:40Speaker 6: is you know they issued in that statement they said
- 9:44Speaker 6: the ADF was inflicting trauma.
- 9:46Speaker 7: On these people.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Now we're about to have a Royal commission right into
- 9:50Speaker 6: defense suicides and the mental health of people who work
- 9:54Speaker 6: in the Australian Defense Force.
- 9:55Speaker 7: You know, what does it.
- 9:56Speaker 6: Do to those people who are out there on the
- 9:58Speaker 6: ground working their asses off in extreme heat, horrible conditions
- 10:04Speaker 6: to do the right things for these people, and you
- 10:06Speaker 6: have an organization with the gravitas of Amnesty International saying
- 10:10Speaker 6: that they are inflicting trauma on these people.
- 10:12Speaker 7: Absolutely disgrace and it's literally.
- 10:14Speaker 1: The IDF is delivering food to people who in need.
- 10:18Speaker 2: They were, you know, doing a really good thing that can.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Help the people out.
- 10:22Speaker 5: That's why Amnesty in my view, doesn't have much credibility.
- 10:26Speaker 5: It's got none and no credibility, particularly up here in
- 10:29Speaker 5: the Northern Territory and I don't even know who these
- 10:31Speaker 5: do goods are.
- 10:32Speaker 4: As if you want to help out, come here, get
- 10:35Speaker 4: some boots on the ground, get out in the forty
- 10:37Speaker 4: eight degree help volunteer to get some food packs and
- 10:40Speaker 4: some water out to people and help out. But a
- 10:42Speaker 4: massive thanks to all of the health organizations that have
- 10:46Speaker 4: been out there, but also the people that really stood up,
- 10:49Speaker 4: and it wouldn't have been easy under those circumstances to
- 10:52Speaker 4: stand up and counter some of that info that's going out.
- 10:55Speaker 4: It's a real lesson for all of us about how
- 10:58Speaker 4: society is going to be moving forward for our kids,
- 11:01Speaker 4: like how are they going to counter information like that
- 11:04Speaker 4: when it comes out. It didn't happen when pandemics happened
- 11:07Speaker 4: many many years ago, So it's something new that we've got,
- 11:10Speaker 4: something new that we've got to deal with as a society,
- 11:13Speaker 4: and everybody does have to be responsible for their actions.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Katie.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I would also argue that, you know, if the communication
- 11:19Speaker 3: and education surrounding the vaccines were handled properly and effectively
- 11:22Speaker 3: in the first place, and maybe we wouldn't be having
- 11:24Speaker 3: all this misinformation out there. And I want to ask
- 11:28Speaker 3: the Minister while he's here about. For several weeks businesses
- 11:32Speaker 3: were asking for support about the vaccines, and just recently
- 11:36Speaker 3: the Department of Business and the Department of Health actually
- 11:39Speaker 3: put out a really good zoom recording that was a
- 11:42Speaker 3: panel full of experts, including our show, and it was
- 11:45Speaker 3: presented in a way that it answered all the really
- 11:48Speaker 3: difficult questions about the myths around the vaccine, things like
- 11:51Speaker 3: you know what it means to be double backs versus unvaxxed,
- 11:54Speaker 3: and the myths around the mr and A and I
- 11:56Speaker 3: found that one video particularly interesting. I've never heard the
- 11:59Speaker 3: words us that were used by the health professionals, and
- 12:02Speaker 3: we've been trying to get hold of this video so
- 12:04Speaker 3: we can somehow circulate this really critical information out there,
- 12:07Speaker 3: not only to the people in Darwin in business, but
- 12:09Speaker 3: right across the territory, especially in Catherine and those other communities. Now,
- 12:12Speaker 3: so Ministry, you know, if you can get hold of
- 12:15Speaker 3: this video for us. There was no politicians in this video.
- 12:18Speaker 3: It was all very measured explaining that there's no mocking
- 12:21Speaker 3: like we've seen. That were really useful. And if we'd
- 12:24Speaker 3: had had that information right from the very start, I
- 12:27Speaker 3: don't even know if we'd be having these conversations we're.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Getting information out to the remotest parts of the Northern
- 12:32Speaker 4: territory is always a challenge, certainly in situations lot this
- 12:34Speaker 4: we've been talking about for the last six months or
- 12:37Speaker 4: more about exactly how we get information out. We've had
- 12:40Speaker 4: health professionals go out, We've had you know, you remember
- 12:43Speaker 4: back the temperature that the vaccines were being stored at
- 12:47Speaker 4: was an issue, so we couldn't just get truckloads of
- 12:50Speaker 4: vaccines out to places. We've got to a stage of
- 12:53Speaker 4: having vaccines in people's fridges, of people walking door to
- 12:56Speaker 4: door in different houses, of having messages in language. Will
- 13:00Speaker 4: absolutely continue to do everything we can, but unashamedly has
- 13:04Speaker 4: been a real challenge getting information. And when you see
- 13:08Speaker 4: misinformation is so easy to spread to how.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Come the people in the communities do get to hear
- 13:13Speaker 3: the misinformation but they're not listening to the Chief Minister's
- 13:16Speaker 3: press conferences every day? Like does that tell you that
- 13:18Speaker 3: maybe the way that the Chief Minister comes out every
- 13:21Speaker 3: day instead of a health professional doing it with the
- 13:24Speaker 3: measure of.
- 13:24Speaker 4: The show standing with him, I think there's health profess
- 13:28Speaker 4: health professional advice coming out at the same time.
- 13:30Speaker 8: How you stop a viral video like that going around
- 13:35Speaker 8: the world. I can't ask, well.
- 13:36Speaker 5: Well, look, Facebook, from the best I can work out,
- 13:40Speaker 5: chucks people off Facebook quite regularly for being naughty. So
- 13:43Speaker 5: why isn't the anti minister does that?
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yes, Chief Minster.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Blocks people at the drop of the hat, so well
- 13:48Speaker 5: there's but why can't the Anti Government Lodge of an
- 13:51Speaker 5: official and formal complaint with Facebook to get that video
- 13:53Speaker 5: taken down?
- 13:54Speaker 2: No? No, And that's a it is a point were
- 13:56Speaker 2: worth making.
- 13:57Speaker 1: But a point that I do really want to make
- 13:59Speaker 1: is that we know as well that members of the
- 14:02Speaker 1: Binjari and Rock Hole communities did come out. They did
- 14:05Speaker 1: issue a statement on the Worly Worly Facebook page with
- 14:07Speaker 1: which I think is very much worth mentioning. Again, we
- 14:11Speaker 1: know that they had rejected these claims that were made
- 14:14Speaker 1: on social media that members of the Binjari community were
- 14:17Speaker 1: being forcibly removed by the Australian Defense Force personnel or
- 14:21Speaker 1: otherwise mistreated by authorities. In fact, they say in this
- 14:25Speaker 1: statement that they've been treated with a lot of respect
- 14:27Speaker 1: and appreciate all the support being given by these support
- 14:31Speaker 1: personnel people. Now, I think that we also not only
- 14:36Speaker 1: need to obviously acknowledge that, but acknowledge and you have
- 14:39Speaker 1: this morning, But the hard work of those different health professionals, ADF,
- 14:45Speaker 1: the police, everybody that has been out there that has
- 14:48Speaker 1: been working, as you said, Matt, their asses off to
- 14:51Speaker 1: try to make sure that people have got food, that
- 14:54Speaker 1: they've got the support that they need, that they are
- 14:58Speaker 1: receiving what they need in a very difficult situation. I
- 15:02Speaker 1: don't know how we change people going rogue on Facebook
- 15:06Speaker 1: and spreading absolute bullshit, but there has to be a
- 15:09Speaker 1: way of doing it, because we can't continue on down
- 15:11Speaker 1: this path if we're going to continue seeing the issues
- 15:14Speaker 1: that we are with.
- 15:15Speaker 6: Coder and in many ways Wilfee, even if Facebook shuts
- 15:20Speaker 6: them down, they find another another avenue. These days, I mean,
- 15:22Speaker 6: there's bit shoot all these other ones.
- 15:27Speaker 7: So I mean, you know, it's a fascinating insight into the.
- 15:31Speaker 6: Human mind in many ways that you know, some people
- 15:34Speaker 6: will believe anything regardless.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Of how if it suits their agenda as well, and
- 15:38Speaker 1: you know, if it suits what they want to believe.
- 15:40Speaker 5: And I think also, as I've said, I think this
- 15:42Speaker 5: person needs to be held to account. But it's one
- 15:44Speaker 5: of those situations I think, you know, the fifteen minutes
- 15:47Speaker 5: of fame and glory. But I think in this situation
- 15:50Speaker 5: is badly backfired and done a disservice, not only to
- 15:53Speaker 5: the people down in the Castroin and the Rock Hole
- 15:55Speaker 5: and Minari communities territory generally.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Well, the sad part is it acts stops our First
- 16:02Speaker 4: Nations people from believing in the vaccine, and that can
- 16:05Speaker 4: have some devastating effects. So we just want to make
- 16:09Speaker 4: sure everybody understands that vaccine is our best way through this.
- 16:12Speaker 8: It's the best way to keep your family safe.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Please, please, if you've got any queries about it concerns,
- 16:17Speaker 4: get in touch with health professionals to get the right advice.
- 16:20Speaker 8: Don't listen to Facebook.
- 16:22Speaker 1: We are going to take a very short break. You
- 16:24Speaker 1: are listening to Mix one O four point nine's three sixty.
- 16:26Speaker 1: It is the week that was also broadcast on AHA
- 16:29Speaker 1: in Alice Springs. It is just twenty five minutes after
- 16:32Speaker 1: nine o'clock. Now I am keen to talk about the
- 16:35Speaker 1: changes to quarantine, but I do just want to take
- 16:37Speaker 1: you to a message from Karen and Catherine and it
- 16:40Speaker 1: says it's so hot please open the pubs So Territory.
- 16:52Speaker 8: Joe Hersy.
- 16:55Speaker 2: No it's Karen and Catherine. She is a regular She's
- 16:58Speaker 2: lovely regular show.
- 17:03Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Now, now we know that there's been so much happened
- 17:08Speaker 1: this week that actually changes, but the changes to quarantine
- 17:12Speaker 1: will they are coming into place, So basically we know
- 17:14Speaker 1: that those stopping into state arrivals who are not fully
- 17:17Speaker 1: vaccinated will you're not going to be able to just
- 17:19Speaker 1: travel freely. But earlier this week on Monday, we saw
- 17:22Speaker 1: anyone traveling to the territory must be fully vaccinated, regardless
- 17:26Speaker 1: of where you're traveling from. The we we know that
- 17:29Speaker 1: from that date the seven day home quarantine for arrivals
- 17:32Speaker 1: from red zones and then.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Well a little bit later, what date does it matter.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I think it's the twentieth of December that we moved
- 17:40Speaker 1: to no quarantine the testing regime, So that is obviously
- 17:45Speaker 1: if you double vaccinated.
- 17:46Speaker 7: What the fact you asked me and not the government minister.
- 17:50Speaker 2: It's just because I'm used to you being an all
- 17:52Speaker 2: the friends conference.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Sorry, I'm more than happy for It's just a good
- 18:00Speaker 4: time to remind people that COVID inta website if you
- 18:03Speaker 4: have got because a lot of people do come straight
- 18:05Speaker 4: to different people for queries or go to the media
- 18:08Speaker 4: or whatever. The covid NTA website has got all of
- 18:11Speaker 4: that information and it does get a little bit prescriptive
- 18:14Speaker 4: and there are certain dates involved, but we certainly do
- 18:17Speaker 4: want to make it easier for people to travel here.
- 18:20Speaker 4: There has been some announcements recently. We have probably a
- 18:26Speaker 4: lot of us have got family into state that you
- 18:27Speaker 4: want to be able to travel and see, actually I've
- 18:29Speaker 4: got family into state. I see it's Jake's birthday today.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Can I give him a big shout out? Happy birthday, Jake,
- 18:34Speaker 4: and hopefully so soon. Yeah, he's been down in Melbourne
- 18:36Speaker 4: for the last couple of years.
- 18:37Speaker 1: The thing, it's so hard, isn't it. So many people
- 18:39Speaker 1: haven't seen their family. There are lots of us wanting
- 18:42Speaker 1: to have family come and visit at Christmas time as well.
- 18:45Speaker 1: So it does give us that certainty, and it's something
- 18:47Speaker 1: that business has really been calling out for for so.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Long, isn't But it's also the families who, as a
- 18:53Speaker 5: normal process lead the church to go into State for
- 18:55Speaker 5: Christmas holidays, to go down to be with grandparents and
- 18:57Speaker 5: relatives and things of that nature. We need the certainty
- 19:01Speaker 5: that they know what happens when they return back to
- 19:03Speaker 5: the northern Territory to people where they've gone.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Of course, yeah, and.
- 19:06Speaker 3: This is why we welcome it as well. Especially can
- 19:08Speaker 3: be done as safely as safely.
- 19:10Speaker 8: But the problem that I.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Have, and the challenge I think for all of us,
- 19:13Speaker 3: is that we have had a history of mixed messaging
- 19:15Speaker 3: around these quarantine arrangements. I mean, we look at the
- 19:19Speaker 3: fifty days of Freedom that Michael Gunner announced and that changed,
- 19:22Speaker 3: and then even our last lockdown and all those arrangements
- 19:24Speaker 3: changed as well, and I just feel like the goalposts
- 19:26Speaker 3: do keep changing. And what territorians need right now is
- 19:30Speaker 3: clear communication and they need that certainty. Those people that
- 19:34Speaker 3: are from interstate that want to come up and visit,
- 19:36Speaker 3: they need that, and territorians need it as well. Our
- 19:38Speaker 3: tourism businesses need it, our hospitality businesses need.
- 19:41Speaker 7: It right across the territory.
- 19:42Speaker 3: So I just urged the government to make sure that
- 19:45Speaker 3: they stop changing the goalposts and please don't repeat history.
- 19:48Speaker 7: Learn from it, O Katie.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Just before you go, sorry, Kezier, we sat here this
- 19:52Speaker 4: time last year saying Merry Christmas to everybody, thanks for
- 19:55Speaker 4: a really tough year, and will never go through another
- 19:57Speaker 4: year like twenty twenty Well, guess what got more complex
- 20:01Speaker 4: And unfortunately the delta strain did make things more complex,
- 20:04Speaker 4: so things do have to change. So arrangements have changed,
- 20:09Speaker 4: the necessity for the vaccine became really prominent. The ability
- 20:13Speaker 4: now to change people's quarantine arrangements to allow for more
- 20:17Speaker 4: free movement through the territory and through Australia and eventually
- 20:21Speaker 4: through the globe as well. Things will constantly change. That's
- 20:25Speaker 4: unfortunately the world that we're going to live in. But
- 20:27Speaker 4: we certainly make no apologies for keeping territory and safety.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So people that are finding it hard probably hardest is
- 20:35Speaker 1: those businesses and particularly those in the tourism sector. And
- 20:39Speaker 1: I do think that by opening up obviously by the
- 20:42Speaker 1: twentieth of December, it's going to make a big impact.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I would hope that it means that we are going
- 20:46Speaker 1: to see more people here and this it will mean
- 20:49Speaker 1: that some of those businesses that have really been struggling
- 20:51Speaker 1: and going to find it a bit easier. But as
- 20:53Speaker 1: we speak, you know, we've got businesses in Catherine who
- 20:55Speaker 1: are doing it tough due to the current lockdown.
- 20:58Speaker 2: So I know that no matter you know, no matter how.
- 21:00Speaker 1: You look at it, this COVID situation has been a
- 21:03Speaker 1: really tough one, and I take your point on board,
- 21:05Speaker 1: Mary clear that it has meant that for a lot
- 21:08Speaker 1: of those businesses just sort of going Okay, where's the goalpost? Okay,
- 21:11Speaker 1: it's changing now where's the goalpost this time? And I
- 21:13Speaker 1: get that we've got to be agile, but I just
- 21:16Speaker 1: think that you know that the impact on a lot
- 21:18Speaker 1: of people is certainly being felt.
- 21:20Speaker 5: The one area that goes back to communication that Mary
- 21:23Speaker 5: Claire talks about, and I've had an issue with government
- 21:25Speaker 5: and their communication and on this particular subject and across
- 21:29Speaker 5: the board on it. But I just wish that sometimes
- 21:32Speaker 5: government would ask two questions, what if we do this?
- 21:35Speaker 7: What if?
- 21:36Speaker 5: And the best example I can give is regards to
- 21:39Speaker 5: the government and Minister for Health saying that if you
- 21:42Speaker 5: have home quarantine you must have four G. Now the
- 21:45Speaker 5: questions should have been asked by someone what if a
- 21:47Speaker 5: property can't get four G? And that's the bulk of
- 21:50Speaker 5: the rule are it's a bit of hit and miss.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Some people have it, some people don't. We have three
- 21:53Speaker 5: G sometimes we don't. And you know the minister said
- 21:56Speaker 5: they would look at Wi FI, Well, they may be
- 21:58Speaker 5: looking at Wi FI, but they've been looking into it
- 22:00Speaker 5: for a long time. And I also suggested they should
- 22:02Speaker 5: be looking at using landlines, like a lot of the
- 22:04Speaker 5: ruler still has landlines copple wiring because we'll never have NVN,
- 22:08Speaker 5: so there's still a lot of landlines down there, and
- 22:11Speaker 5: why couldn't that be sort of looked at. But the
- 22:13Speaker 5: communication they say they're going to do something or they're
- 22:16Speaker 5: going to look at something, but they don't seem to
- 22:17Speaker 5: come back back to the subject matter unless I raise it.
- 22:20Speaker 5: And happened last week in here when the minister said
- 22:23Speaker 5: there'd be you know, they'd get to me about getting
- 22:26Speaker 5: information about COVID out in languages to the communities in
- 22:29Speaker 5: the rule there, which are the Cambodians and the Vietnamese
- 22:31Speaker 5: until less extent the ties. But I have had some
- 22:34Speaker 5: feedback because I did take up Kate Warden's offer last
- 22:37Speaker 5: week and I wrote to her and I have got
- 22:38Speaker 5: some information back. Yes they've got in Vietnamese, but there's
- 22:41Speaker 5: no language for Cambodians. Now we've got a big Cambodian community.
- 22:44Speaker 5: So the question still should be what if we put
- 22:46Speaker 5: this out, have we missed something? And that's where I
- 22:48Speaker 5: think the communication strategy across the board. I don't know
- 22:51Speaker 5: who's the main controller of it, whether it's the Chief
- 22:53Speaker 5: Minister's office or the department or the Health Department, but
- 22:56Speaker 5: it really is not as cohesive and pulled to YELP
- 23:00Speaker 5: should be in my view.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Just back to the business comment, we absolutely acknowledge how
- 23:04Speaker 4: tough it is, and because we are streaming into Alice Springs,
- 23:09Speaker 4: they got hit really hard this year. Particularly they're tourism
- 23:12Speaker 4: businesses and now it's very very hot down there, so
- 23:15Speaker 4: they won't attract too many people from interstate now. I
- 23:18Speaker 4: know that our Tourism Minister is in discussions with the
- 23:21Speaker 4: Federal Tourism and Federal Treasury around how we can repackage
- 23:25Speaker 4: some of the money that they offered earlier in the
- 23:27Speaker 4: year to try and get that back out. So hopefully
- 23:29Speaker 4: we'll have some good news for people down there into
- 23:31Speaker 4: the future. And certainly one of the things that we're
- 23:34Speaker 4: it's like a risk matrix that you use anytime you
- 23:37Speaker 4: make a decision. That's come right from the start when
- 23:40Speaker 4: we had to lock our borders. Can we do this
- 23:42Speaker 4: like physically, can we do this? Can we explain it
- 23:45Speaker 4: to people? Can we get people to abide by this
- 23:48Speaker 4: and then how do we do it? There's always a
- 23:51Speaker 4: matrix that you work through and unfortunately with the good
- 23:54Speaker 4: to go app it does require reasonably be good telecommunications
- 23:58Speaker 4: and we'd.
- 23:59Speaker 8: Love to have that right through the territory. It's a
- 24:00Speaker 8: conversation we have called.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Will happen for those in the rural area, Like if
- 24:04Speaker 1: they're not able to get four.
- 24:05Speaker 2: G are they going to be able to home quarantined
- 24:08Speaker 2: at any point?
- 24:08Speaker 1: Or if they're vaxed anyway, are they going to once
- 24:10Speaker 1: we get to that twentieth of December, are they going
- 24:13Speaker 1: to be able to sort of you know, to travel
- 24:15Speaker 1: freely like the rest of us.
- 24:16Speaker 6: Well, they've got another hurdle they need to jump first
- 24:18Speaker 6: is their vACC raid. So at the moment in Litchfield,
- 24:21Speaker 6: I don't know. Last time I checked it was only
- 24:23Speaker 6: around fifty percent double vax. So until that's eighty percent
- 24:26Speaker 6: double vax, well, if you want to you know, come
- 24:30Speaker 6: to the Lichfield Shire for me to go.
- 24:32Speaker 3: It's really good at rolling out communication to to Darwin
- 24:35Speaker 3: and even greater Darling to a certain extent, but once
- 24:38Speaker 3: you go past that Palmerston line, the rural area around.
- 24:42Speaker 8: Absolutely it's I don't understand.
- 24:44Speaker 3: I don't have some communication.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I don't.
- 24:46Speaker 5: I don't understand why the Rule Air, the Greater Rule
- 24:49Speaker 5: area has a low vaccination rate because I in my travels,
- 24:52Speaker 5: I don't come across many people.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that aren't vaxed, who aren't vaccinated, and.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Who are a supportive of vaccination, like they're not anti
- 25:00Speaker 5: vaxxis you know this this vaccination or any other vaccination.
- 25:02Speaker 5: There's people out there, of course there is, but there's
- 25:04Speaker 5: no swaths of them out there. So I don't understand
- 25:08Speaker 5: why it's such a low rate. So I just say
- 25:09Speaker 5: to people, you know, perhaps says a bit in the communities,
- 25:12Speaker 5: the different communities as I've mentioned, you know, the ethnic communities,
- 25:15Speaker 5: and you know, but I know that they're getting vaccinated.
- 25:17Speaker 5: So I just say to Rule people, you know, if
- 25:19Speaker 5: you've got issues, come and talk to me and I'll
- 25:21Speaker 5: try and help you, you know, go through the Department
- 25:24Speaker 5: Health department, you know, to get you know that proper advices.
- 25:26Speaker 5: You've got some concerns, and some people do have genuine concerns.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I think what we've learned out of this most recent
- 25:31Speaker 4: outbreak is some people just haven't because we haven't had
- 25:34Speaker 4: COVID here. There hasn't been a necessity, there hasn't been
- 25:37Speaker 4: that urgency to do it, and hopefully, like we don't
- 25:41Speaker 4: want to see anybody get hurt out of this outbreak hoastally,
- 25:44Speaker 4: the one thing we can learn is that they're now
- 25:46Speaker 4: is urgency. People have to move around more, that this
- 25:49Speaker 4: disease will travel around.
- 25:51Speaker 5: Talking about the ruler and I'm going to check with
- 25:53Speaker 5: the Minister for Health today. But there was a clinic
- 25:56Speaker 5: out of Kodling, a central shopping center we could go
- 25:58Speaker 5: and get your vaccination. I've been told you yesterday that
- 26:00Speaker 5: that's closing next week.
- 26:01Speaker 7: Now.
- 26:02Speaker 5: I know that's where that man went and jabbed himself there,
- 26:04Speaker 5: but that's no reason to shut the clinic. That was
- 26:06Speaker 5: an anomaly. Yeah, but that clinic apparently is closing now.
- 26:09Speaker 5: I'm going to find out for the minister why. Because
- 26:11Speaker 5: if you want to make it convenient for real people
- 26:13Speaker 5: to come come to the little ingers just halfway and
- 26:15Speaker 5: not have to go all the way into.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Tennis, let us know how you go with that.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Keys. You know, we will take a very short break
- 26:20Speaker 1: when we come back. I'm keen to talk about this
- 26:22Speaker 1: public service pay bonus or is ash we'll find out
- 26:25Speaker 1: more in just a couple of moments.
- 26:26Speaker 2: The most listen to our in Territory radio.
- 26:30Speaker 1: It is just a couple of minutes away from ten o'clock.
- 26:32Speaker 1: We have not got much time left, but very quickly. Obviously,
- 26:36Speaker 1: we know that we've got an extra public holiday this year. Obviously,
- 26:41Speaker 1: Boxing Day has been declared a public holiday in the territory.
- 26:43Speaker 1: It basically means that under the Northern Territory legislation, if
- 26:46Speaker 1: Boxing Day falls on a weekend, the following Monday is
- 26:50Speaker 1: designated to public holiday instead. But once again this year,
- 26:52Speaker 1: the government has decided to deem that December twenty sixth
- 26:56Speaker 1: an additional public holiday.
- 26:58Speaker 2: It Obviously, if.
- 26:59Speaker 1: You're an employee, like when I was a youngster in
- 27:01Speaker 1: my uni years working in retail, I would have absolutely
- 27:04Speaker 1: loved it, But not so much obviously for the businesses
- 27:08Speaker 1: that are having to foot the bill. Kirby, what are
- 27:11Speaker 1: those businesses telling you, Oh, We've done.
- 27:14Speaker 4: A lot of work over the last eight months working
- 27:15Speaker 4: with businesses to try and make sure we get grants out.
- 27:18Speaker 8: To them to keep them open.
- 27:19Speaker 4: We know that keeping their workforce is a big problem
- 27:21Speaker 4: that they have as well. We also know that recognizing
- 27:25Speaker 4: that if people have to work on Boxing Day, particularly
- 27:27Speaker 4: in the territory, if you have to leave your family
- 27:29Speaker 4: and go to work, why should you not be recompensed
- 27:32Speaker 4: for that, the same as people are in the State.
- 27:34Speaker 4: One of the big bits of feedback that we have
- 27:36Speaker 4: had from the Chamber of Commerce is, you know, we
- 27:38Speaker 4: want this ledgis, if you're going to do it, we
- 27:40Speaker 4: want this legislated so people know. So that's certainly something
- 27:43Speaker 4: that we'll look at doing into the future to make
- 27:44Speaker 4: sure there's a clearer direction for people further out.
- 27:48Speaker 6: You get that, You get that on the Boxing Day
- 27:50Speaker 6: public holiday though, don't you on the twenty eighth, Is
- 27:53Speaker 6: that right?
- 27:54Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 27:54Speaker 6: So on the twenty seventh, My understanding is Christmas Day
- 27:57Speaker 6: is you know everyone has a day off.
- 27:58Speaker 7: Yep.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Boxing Day, the twenty sixth, which is now a Sunday
- 28:03Speaker 6: but it's now public holiday, is public holiday rates. Then
- 28:06Speaker 6: Monday is the Christmas Day holiday, which is now public
- 28:09Speaker 6: holiday rates, and then Tuesday is the Boxing.
- 28:11Speaker 7: Day holiday, which is public holiday rates.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I might go get a casual job over Christmas.
- 28:16Speaker 4: Which is exactly the same way that it plays out
- 28:19Speaker 4: in the state and.
- 28:20Speaker 7: In the public service.
- 28:20Speaker 9: You get three days offs so can I just add
- 28:26Speaker 9: to that though, I mean hospitality are the ones that
- 28:29Speaker 9: have been impacted the most with this change and having
- 28:31Speaker 9: this additional public holiday.
- 28:32Speaker 3: And I found it really interesting that both the Chief
- 28:35Speaker 3: Minister and the Minister for Small businessing beside me were
- 28:37Speaker 3: at the Hospitality and President's luncheon earlier this week, and
- 28:40Speaker 3: they kept it a secret the whole time, through the.
- 28:42Speaker 8: Whole event, and then that night the Antin.
- 28:44Speaker 3: News published the story about the Boxing Day holiday, and
- 28:47Speaker 3: I just fout it incredible that they weren't. They didn't
- 28:49Speaker 3: have the guts to front them at that event and
- 28:51Speaker 3: they waited.
- 28:52Speaker 4: We absolutely have the guts to front anyone anytime.
- 28:55Speaker 1: No.
- 28:57Speaker 8: Exactly much of anyone else. Can I say two quick
- 29:02Speaker 8: things a different note before we finish up. Likes a
- 29:05Speaker 8: festival like, thank you for everybody and all the businesses
- 29:08Speaker 8: that have locked in behind that.
- 29:09Speaker 4: And and the wind up is on Sunday on the
- 29:12Speaker 4: new beautiful lawns out the front of Parliament House.
- 29:16Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a big poker up already culminates.
- 29:20Speaker 2: It's the wind up. I thought there was something else
- 29:23Speaker 2: the culmination. I've eaten plenty of lucks. I don't worry about.
- 29:28Speaker 8: That and the other thing. Just to quick shout out
- 29:30Speaker 8: to Savann.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Who was the wonderful young woman from Go that won
- 29:34Speaker 4: the Northern Territories or the National Apprentice.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Of the Year.
- 29:39Speaker 8: Yeah, it's been a fantastic very very well.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Done Originalori, very well done Katy.
- 29:44Speaker 5: I've just got one quick, very great well. You know
- 29:47Speaker 5: last week I said how I had these people staying
- 29:48Speaker 5: at my place and they wouldn't leave. Well, I've got
- 29:51Speaker 5: the message and the memo now and they're bolting.
- 29:53Speaker 2: So by Lynnen Mao. Thank you so much for your
- 29:59Speaker 2: time this morning.
- 30:00Speaker 8: Much for having me on. Have a great weekend everybody.
- 30:02Speaker 2: You too. Paul Kurty, thank you so much.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Thanks Judy Keisi a peric, thank you for your time.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And Matt Cunningham, thank you.
- 30:09Speaker 7: Thanks Kurty.
- 30:10Speaker 2: We'll talk to you.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Again very soon. You are listening to Mix one O
- 30:12Speaker 1: four point nine is three sixty
